Christmas is truly a special time in Excelsior Springs! Each year a group of volunteers
spend the entire year planning and prepping to make the holiday season a happy,
jolly time for the town and its visitors. One piece of that is the Lane of Lights, located
on Lovers Lane in East Valley Park. The lane is a driveable path of Christmas displays
that has expanded in the last few years to now include a beautiful lighted tunnel at the
end. The lane is an Excelsior Springs Christmas tradition, run by volunteers who accept
donations that help power the lane. We hope you take the time to drive through this
holiday season! The Lane of Lights opens during the Christmas Kick-Off on Saturday,
November 19 and runs through December 30.

Visit During Summer Second Fridays For Extra Fun
It’s always a great time in Downtown Excelsior
Springs, but the second Friday of the month has
a little “extra” added to it!
Second Fridays takes place, well, the second Friday
of each month during May-September and
consists of select downtown businesses opening
late, offering specials, and occassionaly hosting
artists and musicians for entertainment.
In the warmer months, live music might be
found outdoors in one of the pocket parks and
sidewalk chalk might be found lying around for
guests to add flair to the sidewalks themselves.
The week before, participating businesses,
their hours and what they are offering will be
featured on the Downtown Excelsior blog and
Facebook page so be sure to check those out
and plan accordingly!

Sip and Stay in a Double Decker Downtown Excelsior Business
In late 2021, two new businesses opened
on the east end of Broadway Ave. in Historic
Downtown Excelsior Springs.
Moving from its previous location inside
Broadway Bar and Grill (see page 26), the
Wine & Shine Tasting Room now resides in
its very own storefront, at 109 E. Broadway.
The Wine & Shine Tasting room features
wine from Florida Orange Groves, carrying
over 30 unique varieties varying from
orange coffee to a tomato wine. Alongside
the delicious wine offerings, you’ll also find
over 20 varieties of Sugarland Moonshine,
as well as meat and cheese trays accompanying
a small gift shop.
Drop in for a little taste of these unique flavors
and grab some to take back with you.
Up the stairs from the Wine & Shine Tasting
Room, the owners have expanded their
business to include the Broadway Inn, a
trendy loft available as a rental for your visit
to Excelsior Springs. With 2 bedrooms, a
fully equipped kitchen, WiFi, luxury linens,
and other fantastic amenities, you’ll be staying
right in the heart of the historic Downtown.

Pocket Parks Bring Beauty and Meaning to Downtown
As you stroll around downtown, you might discover a small
park or two on your journey. These are known as pocket
parks, and they are new additions to the downtown streetscape.
There are two small parks and both were created
by the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, Inc. They were a
labor of love and hold special meaning for many people.
The first one to be completed is the Carolyn Schutte Pocket
Park, located at 100 S. Marietta Street. It was developed,
designed and financed by a group known as “Carolyn’s
Posse.” The Posse is a group of friends and family of former
mayor and long-time resident, Carolyn Schutte, who
is living with a medical condition that leaves her unable to
participate in civic activities in the town she loves. The park
is now a highlight of downtown with a beautiful water feature,
colorful chairs, a stage and a mural depicting aspects
of Excelsior Springs’ history. Many local events are held
here, including yoga, movies in the park and live music.
The second park is the Brooke Baxter Memorial Park, located
at 424 S. Thompson Avenue. This park was created
to honor Brooke Baxter, a beloved Excelsior Springs resident
who tragically lost her life as a teenager. Brooke will
forever be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Her
bright smile and caring nature touched many lives. The
park features a bridge walkway, benches and multitude of
trees and flowers. A mural depicting butterflies and peaceful
scenery adds to the quiet atmosphere. In the winter, it is
transformed into a Christmas photo opportunity complete
with lights and Santa’s sleigh.
Both parks resulted from dedicated individuals with a desire
to beautify the downtown and with a commitment to
honor two very special people. Residents donated land,
time, money, labor and supplies needed to create these
lovely spaces. Plan a visit and take a walk through one
or both of the pocket parks and pause for a moment and
enjoy the tranquility.

If you’re an active person, you will find many ways to keep your
heart rate up here in Excelsior Springs.
We have a very active biking and running community. The large
amount of rural roads and hills make for challenging courses, and
a few years ago a new official race was born.
The Opal Wapoo Gravel Experience is just that. 17% climbs,
gnarly descents and punchy hills add up to one of the most challenging
gravel races in the country. The race/ride starts and ends
during Waterfest, an annual festival celebrating Excelsior Springs’
mineral water heritage. You will be led out of town by a 1953
Johnny Popper (John Deere) tractor, and within a few miles you

will leave pavement and hit the gravel roads and journey through
the continual rise and fall of Missouri countryside. The downtown
Waterfest grounds will be full of post race options for nourishment.
Be prepared to be challenged - you will ride hills, hills and more
hills! There is roughly 9,000+ feet of climb on the 100-mile Wapoo
race and around 5,500+ feet of climb on the 52-mile Opal race.
These gravel routes are chalked full of punchy climbs that run on
repeat. Seriously, If you have not ridden in our area we suggest
dedicating some time to hill training.

20 years ago, sisters Wendy Baldwin and Jill Rickart decided
to take a chance on a new business venture in Downtown
Excelsior Springs. At the time, the downtown was a shell of
what it is today, but the sisters saw potential for growth that
they could be a part of and help spearhead.
Their restaurant, Ventana Gourmet Grill, came to life in February
2002, offering a casual yet upscale dining experience
that was previously lacking in this small town. Their corner
building is a site to behold, with historically ornate ceilings,
original wood floors and brick walls full of the antique charm
that Excelsior Springs has come to be known for.
The menu is eclectic, with choices for every preference, from
pasta to award-winning steaks, and everything in between.
On any one table you might find a Caesar salad with a cup
of lobster bisque soup, a bowl of New Orleans Cajun pasta
with a side of Parmesan pita bread, and a prime rib with zucchini
and a baked potato. If it’s a Tuesday night, you might
even find an order of their all you can eat shrimp.
Along with their gourmet entree choices, Ventana boasts an
extensive wine, beer and spirits list, and is famous for their
homemade cheesecake.
Their forward thinking momentum has led to multiple expansions
over the years. With the growing need to accommodate
larger groups, such as wedding or retirement parties,
they expanded their business to include what they affectionately
call “The O.R.,” also just known as “the other room.”

information on daily specials and makes ordering carry-out
easy as pie (we mean cheesecake!).

The Heart of the Heart of a Town
“I told my wife I was going to work in that building someday, and I was right.”
Some might call the Hall of Waters the heart of Excelsior Springs (see page 69),
but T.R. Kennedy has been the heart of the Hall of Waters now for 13 years. As the
Building Superintedendent, he knows the inner workings of the building like no one
else, and that’s the way he likes it.
Drawn to the Hall of Waters since he was in high school, Kennedy says he can’t
explain the magic, just that it’s always been there.
He does know he loves the history, the architecture, and the unique way it was
built, but it takes more than a love of a building’s structure to care about it the way
T.R. cares about the Hall of Waters.
Not only does he do the work he has to do, he goes above and beyond, curating
museums to showcase the history, hosting ghost tours, planning merchandise for the
tours, and brainstorming ideas to constantly make the place better. Whatever happens
at the Hall, T.R. is there in the background ready with a steady, helping hand
to help move it along. As he puts it, “I’m here to take care of the building, and make
sure she’s doing okay.”
Even better, T.R. is just genuinely a nice guy, always ready for a chat. If you find
yourself in the Hall of Waters and run into him, make sure to stop and say hi. Maybe
you’ll get a quick fascinating history lesson, or he might even tell you a ghost story;
If nothing else, you’ll know you’ve just made a great new friend.

In the early-to-mid 1900s, Excelsior Springs became America’s
“Haven of Health.” Boasting 46 mineral water springs
and five different varieties of water, each with unique supposed
healing properties, Excelsior was a wonder working
destination to the ill. Mineral water pavilions and bath houses
soon gave way to the big business of health sanitariums. These
facilities thrived until a national media exposure of “dubious
claims” dried up the mineral water business. While the health
benefits of the area’s mineral waters may have dried up, you
can let the beer at Dubious Claims Brewing Co. be the cure
for whatever “ales” you.
Established in 2018, Dubious Claims Brewing Co. is a craft
brewery opened by Neil Wilkerson. After “Neighbor Neil”
became a bit of a neighborhood celebrity by brewing his own
beer, he decided to take it to the next level by opening his
own place right here in Downtown Excelsior Springs.
With over a dozen beers made right in house in the state
of the art brew house and a complementary menu filled with
pizza, sandwiches and a delightful beer cheese macaroni and
cheese, every palate is sure to be pleased.
If you’re a fan of the beer (oh, you will be), you can even
take some home with you - beer can be canned at the bar
and glass growlers are available to fill with your favorites.
The most popular beer is the Bathhouse Blueberry Wheat, but
there is a large variety, from light to dark, to suit any preference.
Seasonally, you will find DCBC’s hard apple cider,
made from fresh apples from local orchards, or Mango Town,
a spin on the classic E-Town Ale, perfect for sipping outside on
the back patio on a warm summer night.
Dubious Claims has two spaces perfect for your event, and
often hosts wedding rehearsal dinners, reunions, birthday
parties, company gatherings and more.
Dubious Claims is also highly involved and invested in the local
community, and has hosted several events that raised over
$90,000 to give back to local programs, with plans for many

Do You Believe In Ghosts?
Do you believe in the paranormal? You might by the time you
leave.
Excelsior Springs has a long history of hauntings and ghost sightings,
with numerous stories repeated by multiple people at different
times. It gets hard to ignore after awhile.
The Hall of Waters has its very special ghost story that has made
its way into local legend.
T.R. Kennedy, building superintentent (more on him on page 25)
was working late one evening cleaning the floors. He glanced up
to the upper balcony and spotted a woman watching him. She has
long brown hair and was wearing a 1950’s style red dress.
Confused and startled, as the Hall was closed for the evening, he
loudly said, “Hey... you’re not supposed to be here.”
The woman simply turned her head and walked away. Undeterred,
Kennedy walked up the stairwell to find the mystery woman
only to find there was not a single soul in the building but him. He
checked both stairwells and all around the balcony, before promptly
leaving, deciding to come back in the daylight.
Other employees have witnessed doors opening and closing,
heard voices where people were not there, and heard children
running and laughing near where the pool used to be filled and
functioning.
While at the time, Kennedy was freaked, he’s now comfortable
and at home with the idea of spirits haunting the halls. In fact, he
even leads the monthly Paranormal Tours.
That’s right, The Hall of Waters ghosts - we mean hosts - its own
Paranormal Tour the third Saturday of each month. You will hear
history and tales that you won’t hear before the sun goes down.

every corner. Expect the unexpected at the abandoned swimming
pool and this 1940’s spa of healing. Anomalies have been seen in
photos, such as shadows and figures when no one else is in sight!
Kennedy and his team will utilize specialized paranormal equipment
including electromagnetic field meters that can detect dark
presences and trapped spirits.

The Hall isn’t the only creepy place in town, though. The Elms is
one of the most notoriously haunted locales, with guests and staff
alike telling tales of voices, footsteps, items being moved, doors
slamming and music playing. If you’re up to it, you can take a Paranormal
Tour during your stay there as well.
Local bar/brewery The Atlas Saloon is said to boast more than
one type of spirit, and be sure to ask them about the tunnels that
run underneath the building! Many others also swear their cars
have broken down when driving through Wolf Hollow.

For Just A Short Little Drive, You’ll Reap A Lot of Reward
If you’re feeling up to a little road trip,
you’ll find a hidden gem past the outskirts
of town.
Of The Earth Farm + Distillery is located
just north of Richmond, in the gently rolling
hills of Ray County.
The Pierce Family has been at their farm
since the early 90s; building and adding
on to the operation in the years since then.
Of The Earth Farm contains a seven-acre
orchard that includes 26 varieties of apples,
two varieties of Asian pears and two
varieties of peaches. The apples are used
to produce premium spirits, like their flagship
product, Apple Brandy. Other spirits
produced by Of The Earth Farm include
Ray County Rye Whiskey made with Missouri
rye, Grappa created from Missouri
grapes, and Blackberry Liqueur made
with fresh, local berries. In addition to
these year-round products, the Of The
Earth Farm + Distillery Tasting Room offers
bottles of their seasonal, small-batch,
short-run spirits; like WinterGin and Rye
Eau de Vie. Open each weekend (April
– December), the Tasting Room has an ever-expanding
selection of cocktails, beer,
wine, adult slushies and light food. Special
events with live music and entertainment
are a monthly highlight.
Popular products include Apple Brandy,
Coffee Liqueur, Grappa, Rye Whiskey,
Blackberry Liqueur, Gin No. 1 and Beetroot
Spirit.

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS ANNUAL
WINE FESTIVAL
Whether you are a seasoned wineaux or still figuring out the difference
between Moscato and Merlot, the Downtown Excelsior Springs
Wine Festival is for you! This premier destination event places Missouri
wineries and their famous wines on display in the beautiful outdoor
setting of Lover’s Lane in East Valley Park.
You’ll have the opportunity to sample dozens of wines from a multitude
of different Missouri wineries, learn their wine making methods
and speak directly with the owners who have made Missouri famous
in the American Wine Market.
Local bands provide the background music and keep the festival
lively while you sip and stroll the wineries, breweries, food trucks and
vendors at the festival.
Tickets to this event can be purchased in advance and at the gate,
permitting tickets are still available. These tickets include access to
the grounds, wine samples, a souvenir glass, all day trolley access
and the option to buy additional wine by the glass, bottle or case. $5
general admission tickets are also available for those not wishing to
sample the wines.
The Annual Wine Festival is one of Excelsior’s most beloved and

Excelsior Springs has become renowned as a wine community. We
have three local wineries that are accessible by trolley tour, Willow
Spring Mercantile offers the greatest retail selection of Missouri wines
in the state, and our Wine Festival draws crowds in the thousands. If
you are a wine lover, you will feel right at home in Excelsior Springs.
Great food with wine pairings are a specialty of downtown restaurants.
Shop for wine and fun wine-related items, visit a wine cave,
relax in a wine cellar and listen to live music. Plan your wine weekend

Four Horses and a Dog Vineyard & Winery is located at 15010 Salem
Rd. Created in 2008, Four Horses was brought to life by two couples
with a love of wine. In addition to their own wine, they offer local
beer, Missouri hard ciders, mimosas and sangrias. Popcorn, chips,
meat and cheese trays and snack platters are available to munch on.
Van Till Family Farm Winery, 13986 Hwy C, Rayville, is a family-owned
winery that offers a scenic country setting with full table service.
Tuesday through Saturday, their wine room and wine garden are
open for tastings. Antipasto trays, sandwiches, salads and fresh baked
breads are also available. On Fridays and Saturdays, their popular
wood-oven baked pizza is available. Van Till hosts a variety of events,
including live music. They also offer a wine club for those who fall in
love with their wines and are interested in special perks.
Fence Stile Vineyards and Winery, 31010 W. 124th St., offers wine
with a few extras. They are the only winery in the region with a wine
cave. They offer tastings and tours with space available to enjoy your
drinks on the patio overlooking their vineyards, in the Cellar Garden
or in the indoor Tasting Room. They also have outdoor firepits for cozy
gatherings. They offer many events, including special wine and dine
events. Fence Stile is also home to the “Fence Stile Love Lock Wall”
where love birds can celebrate their love by symbolically locking it in.
There are also “Adopt-A-Vine” opportunities.
All three locations offer tastings, events and their own unique styles,
as well as offering private tours and event space rental to provide you
and your party with a beautiful backdrop for any special event.
New in late 2021, or newly opening in 2022, are new additions to
the wine scene.
Wine & Shine Tasting Room, 109 E. Broadway, offers tasting
(and of course purchase of) wine from Florida Orange Groves,
carrying over 30 unique varieties, from orange coffee to a tomato
wine.
Casa Di Vite will be opening in a beautifully restored historical
building downtown at 216 Spring St. Casa Di Vite will provide
an “apertivo” experience featuring an assortment of international
wines. Monthly “featured destinations” will bring an additional
unique variety of flavors for all to enjoy.
Bella Uva is the dream of Chris and Tiffany Kimball. Located
at 2001 St. Louis Ave., anticipated first vintage of wine will
be released in 2022 with a focus on producing high quality,
varietal, estate wines showcasing fruit that thrives in NW Missouri’s
climate.

An Inside Look at The
World of Custom Jewelry
At Sturm Brothers’ Custom Design and
Fine Jewelry, you can shop their uniquely
curated collection of fine jewelry pieces
in a range of precious metals and genuine
stones or design a brand-new custom
piece that you build together. Their open
workspace is designed to give you access
to the entire jewelry creation process, from
designing to casting to stone setting; they
allow their customers to view each step
and answer any questions along the way
to make it an enjoyable and memorable
experience.
The Sturm Brothers have been in business
together since 2017, though they have
been in the industry along with their parents
since 2010. Growing up in the industry,
they each developed a love for jewelry
and decided to enter into their own
roles of the trade. Jordan is a graduate
of the bench jeweler program and Joseph
became CAD certified in 2019. Together,
they have created a one-of-a-kind jewelry
experience for their customers.
If you are visiting Excelsior Springs and
have the desire to create
a custom piece, here is a
quick walk-through of their
process. First, stop in, and
they will sit down with you to
get an idea of what you would
like. Together, they will use their
computer program to build your
idea. You will leave with a rendering
of what your finished piece will look like.
Then their designer will make any necessary
final adjustments before 3D printing
a plastic model of the jewelry. At this time,
you can come in and try on your model
before the jeweler makes a mold and casts
your piece in the desired metal. Last, he
sets any stones and polishes up your new
jewelry, and it is ready for you to pick up
or they can securely ship your piece to
your home. This timeframe does vary depending
on the complexity of your piece.

Excelsior Springs simmers with creativity
that bursts forth in galleries, theatre,
and music venues tucked away in the
city’s historic architecture. We have become
an art lover’s dream destination.
Stroll through the downtown district and
check out the rich art scene, head to the
latest theatre production, or relax and
enjoy the music. Get an extra helping of
Excelsior Springs hospitality and charm
by timing a visit during one of the many
festivals.
Throughout our retail shops and art galleries,
you’ll find local art for sale, as well
as the opportunity to sign up for art lessons
and fun classes, both individual and
group. (Plan ahead for a wine and paint
style class!).
During Second Friday events, often
sidewalk chalk can be found scattered
on the sidewalk for kids (or adults!) to
try their hand at some amatuer sidewalk
sketching. Also during these monthly
events, artists and musicians are featured
at businesses where you might not typically
expect to find an artist.
Throughout the year, The Slightly Off
Broadway Theatre puts on several performances,
from comedies to dramas to
music revues; some are even offered as
dinner theatre packages in coordination
with Ventana Gourmet Grill.

How The World’s Most Recognizable Flag Started Right Here
We bet you’ll recognize this flag photo! Did
you know that was inspired by a flag flying
right here in Excelsior Springs?
From The Excelsior Springs Museum:
When the world was in a turmoil, Fred Tripp
of Beloit, Wisconsin, was 71 years of age. He
looked out his hospital window at McCleary
Hospital in Excelsior Springs, Missouri and
was inspired by the flag flying atop the post
office across the street. Tripp was an interior
decorator specializing in painting but not
trained in fine art painting, yet he produced a
masterpiece, an inspiring, compelling expression
on canvas of what he felt in his heart and
soul about the Flag of his Country. He presented
this six foot oil painting to the hospital.
Motivated by the spirit of patriotism that
was sweeping the country in 1940, McCleary
Memorial Hospital produced full color lithograph
reproductions and presented one to
each of their many former patients all over the
United States. Its distribution had reached the
200,000 mark when World War II broke out.
With the outbreak of war, the demand for
the picture increased beyond the Hospital’s
capacity to reproduce it so its distribution was
turned over to a commercial enterprise. Since
that time, it has become the most widely distributed
flag picture in the United States, with
copies hanging in many Washington congressional
offices, the office of Presidents Harry
Truman and Dwight Eisenhower, as well as in
homes all across the country.
The flag pole from which this inspirational
flag once hung was moved to Crown Hill Cemetery
and dedicated May 26, 1968.

All proceeds from the museum’s gift shop go
toward maintenance and upkeep of the museum.

Throughout Downtown Excelsior
Springs, you will see gorgeous murals
painted on the sides of multiple buildings,
including the one above, painted
on the side of Ventana Gourmet
Grill. Artist Jacob Duncan (right) is a
talented local artist who was commissioned
to paint this mural, as well as
the Mayan-inspired mural found at the
Carolyn Schutte Pocket Park further up Broadway, and a brand
new butterly mural in the Brooke Baxter Memorial Pocket Park.
All murals showcase Excelsior’s rich history and firmly bring
the roots of music, art and beauty to meet the present. (Photos

FUN FACTS TO KNOW
Film is art, too, and Excelsior Springs has been a location
for Hollywood movies, most notably “Adam at 6 a.m.”,
starring Michael Douglas in 1970.
While that may be the most high-profile instance, there
are other famous folks in the art world with ties to Excelsior
Springs, too!
Lyle Waggoner lived in Excelsior during early childhood
and was an actor and former model, known for his work on
The Carol Burnett Show and for playing the role of Steve
Trevor on Wonder Woman.
Brenda Joyce was born here, and went on to become a
model and actress with roles in Tarzan, Wonder Woman,
and more.

Take a Self-Guided Mineral Water History Walking Tour
Excelsior Springs was founded in 1880 after settlers
discovered the medicinal qualities of Siloam Spring.
Eventually at least 40 wells were located within a half
mile radius of Siloam. These wells contained four distinct
varieties of water, thus giving Excelsior Springs
the rightful claim of having the world’s greatest group
of mineral waters, including two of only six iron- manganese
wells known to exist worldwide. Most of the
wells were within the three local historic districts in the
downtown area.
Take a self-guided walking tour to enjoy the history
and scenery of our historic town, as you imagine
what it might have been like back in the days when the
spring waters flowed freely and thousands flocked to
our Valley of Vitality for their alleged healing powers.
Efforts have been made in the last several years to
restore many of the structures with research ongoing to
see what it would take to once again access some of
the waters down below.

Elms Hotel (1)
The Elms Hotel Resort and Spa, built in 1912
and listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, appears today very much as it did on the
day of its grand opening. At one time offering
mineral water baths and with mineral water available
for consumption in the lobby, the hotel has
been an integral part of the mineral water history
of Excelsior Springs. This is the third Elms Hotel
building, with the two previous structures having
been destroyed by fire in 1898 and 1909 respectively.
It was designed by Jackson and McIlvain in
the Tudor Revival style.
Salt Sulphur Well (2)
The small brick building in the parking lot on
the west side of the hotel was the Elms pump
house. Built in 1913, it is the site of the original
sulpho-saline well. When the second Elms Hotel
burned, permission was given to the owner to
sell the water to help recoup the devastating
loss. Before that time, the water was free.
White Sulphur Well (3)
The site of this well is 505 Elms Blvd. It is adjacent
to Highway 10. The water from this well
was piped into the Hall of Waters for use in the
swimming pool. There is presently a concrete
slab marking this well site. There are plans to
build a reproduction of the pagoda that originally
housed this well.
McCleary Thronton-Minor Hospital (4)
The brick structure located at 402 St. Louis
Ave. is the last remaining portion of the Mc-
Cleary Clinic that was founded by Dr. A. S. Mc-
Cleary. The largest portion of the hospital once
stood on the ground that is now the site of the
Colony Plaza Apartments. The formal opening
of the clinic was June 1925. Mineral water was
given to patients as an important part of treatment.
Royal Hotel (5)
The oldest of the three major hotels, with construction
beginning in 1898, the Royal now stands
vacant and partially demolished. It began life as
Wholf’s Tavern and was later known as Snapp’s
Tavern until 1905. By 1910, with a six story addition
to the west, it had doubled in size. The Royal
featured its own mineral water known as Royal
Salt Sulphur and housed both men’s and women’s
bath departments. It is the only major hotel with
no history of fire.
Oaks Hotel (6)
The present Oaks Hotel structure is the second
building to have been constructed on the site.
The first hotel, known as the Snapp, opened in
June, 1907. It was destroyed by fire on January
7, 1912. The second Snapp Hotel opened May
15, 1913 and is the building that remains today.
After a few years, the name was changed to the
Oaks Hotel. The hotel was designed by Frank
J. Jackson. Among other amenities, it featured
spacious men’s and women’s mineral water
bath departments on the lower floor. After suffering
from fire, vacancy and years of neglect,
the Oaks was given a new life when it was totally
restored and opened as senior housing in
2008.
WALKING TOUR INFORMATION
Excelsior Springs Museum & Archives (7)
In 1905, Dr. William Woods contracted
the renowned architect, Louis S. Curtiss to
design the building that now houses the
Excelsior Springs Museum and Archives.
It opened February 28, 1906 as the Clay
County Bank. The building was expanded
in 1920 and at that time the two large
paintings on the north and south walls were
added. They are copies of “The Gleaners”
and “The Angelus”. Today these paintings
are considered to be priceless. The museum
is open to the public Tuesday thru Saturday
and houses a wealth of historic items
and memorabilia pertinent to the mineral
waters.
Soda Saline Well (8)
Also known as Lithiated Soda Well, this
well is located at 302 W. Excelsior Street
behind the School District office building. It
is marked with a newly constructed pagoda.
Fowler’s Inn and Magnaferro Well (9)
Once located on the lawn, a north addition
to the historic Fowler’s Inn was built over
the Magnaferro Well. The Inn, one of the
oldest buildings in the Hall of Waters Historic
District, is being renovated. The inn has now
been demolished.
Sulfo Salt Well (10)
Located at 200 E. Excelsior Street in the
Hall of Waters Historic District, the Sulfo Salt
Saline Well was housed in this old stone gazebo.
It was restored as part of the Downtown
Villas project. It had been missing a roof
for many years.
Excelsior Soda Well & Hiawatha House
(11)
The Excelsior Soda Well is marked with
a red hand pump on the north side of Hiawatha
House, located at 101 Linden between
Broadway and Excelsior Streets, in
the Boarding House Historic District. The
Hiawatha was constructed in 1905-06 and
is one of the few examples of Queen Ann
architecture remaining in Excelsior Springs.
The three story structure, featuring a wrap
around porch and original stained glass
windows, is on the local Historic Landmarks
Register. The home is a private residence.

Lithia #1 Well (12)
Located at 245 E. Broadway in the Hall
of Waters Historic District, this well was
discovered in 1883 or 1884, making it
one of the earliest to be found. The water
was also known as calcium bicarbonate.
This is one of the 10 wells that were piped
into the Hall of Waters. A new pagoda
was constructed in 2006 on the well site
and it serves as a relaxation spot for visitors.
Hall of Waters (13)
Constructed in 1936 as a W.P.A. project,
the Hall of Waters stands as a tribute
to the mineral water history of Excelsior
Springs. It opened in 1937 as the central
location in which to partake of the
waters. A variety of water from 10 wells
was piped into the building to be used
for drinking, bathing, swimming and bottling.
Today this wonderful art deco style
building houses city government offices.
The Visitor Center is temporarily closed
due to repair.
Crystal Lithia Well (14)
This well site is located in a residential
area at the corner of Saratoga and Benton
streets, in the Boarding House Historic
District. The Lithia Bottling Company advertised
in 1907 that it was the only company
on earth to manufacture its soda waters
from pure Lithia water using Crystal Lithia’s
water. A new pagoda was constructed on
this well site in 2009 and serves as a rest
area for walkers.
Superior #2 Well (15)
This well pagoda is located in a peaceful
location close to Fishing River on the
beautiful walking trail in East Valley Park.
It has the distinction of being the last remaining
original well pagoda and is listed
on the local Historic Landmarks Register.
An extensive restoration of this structure is
planned to begin soon.

The Downtown Excelsior Springs Trail
System includes the three trails of Fishing
River Linear Park Trail, Isley Park
Woods Trail and Siloam Mountain Trail.
These trails wind through five parks, that
include Paul Craig Park, Fishing River
Linear Park, Isley Park Woods, East Valley
Park and Siloam Mountain Park. The
entire trail is approximately two miles
long. The historic Superior Well, one
of the original wells Excelsior’s famous
spring waters were drawn from, can be
seen from Fishing River Linear Park Trail.
Numerous challenging dirt trails can be
found throughout Isley Park Woods.
Rainbow Trail, left, is a 1.85 mile
trail that runs along Highway 69/Rainbow
Blvd. on the west side of Excelsior

Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Springs, ending at Get Fit Park, a local
park that includes outdoor fitness equipment.
Fox Crossing Trail, below, is a .6 mile
mulch trail that travels in and out of the
woods at Eddie Raper Park, which is located
near the intersection of Orrick and
Seybold Roads in southwest Excelsior
Springs.

Splish-Splash Your Way To A Great Summer Day
Rainbow Splash Park, 300 Sherri Lane, is a newly opened splash park. This project was a major renovation to the
old Rainbow Swim Club pool that was partially funded by the Land & Water Conservation Fund, and fundraised for by
the Excelsior Springs Parks Foundation. Amenities include splash pad, benches, gazebo, concessions, cornhole, and
ping pong. There is parking available west of the splash pad, and Rainbow Trail access on the east side of the park.
Hours are seasonal and weather dependent. Information on opening and rental availability can be found at

No Bones About It, Our Parks Rock
Century Bark is an expansion of Century Park that includes an offleash
dog park. Amenities include benches, pergolas, and a water
fountain. There is a large breed area and small breed area with a double
gate entry into each. There is off road parking available with future
development to include a parking lot, restroom facility, trail extension,
and outdoor classroom. The park is open daily sunrise-sunset.

Some important rules to know:
• No visitor can bring more than 2 dogs at once into off-leash area
• Dogs must be current on all vaccinations
• Collars, vaccination & ID tags required
• Dogs must be supervised by someone 12+ at all times

• No aggressive dogs, puppies under 4 months old, sick dogs,
female dogs in heat, or animals other than dogs allowed
• No pit bull breeds (city ordinance)
• The following are not allowed in the park: food, dog treats,
smoking, alcohol, glass containers, strollers, chairs, tug toys,
rawhide toys, squeaky toys, or commercial trainers to
conduct business.

There’s No Age Minimum For Fun in Excelsior Springs!

Sutton Sullivan wasn’t sure what she
should do for her 9th birthday. Her parents
didn’t want to pack a house full of
people, and her original idea of a skating
party fell through, so she and her mom
put their thinking caps on and came up
with something new and fun - “A Very Excelsior
Springs Birthday Party!”
The day started with the Excelsior
Springs Chamber Trolley picking Sutton
and her pals up at her home and driving
them downtown. Their first stop was Style
by Ry, 116 E. Broadway, where Sutton
was bestowed with a birthday sash and
crown and each guest was given swag
bags filled with custom t-shirts, nail stickers,
fidget bracelets and other goodies
(bags were handed off from mom prior
to event).
From there, the gal pals skipped up the
street to Bohemian Sage Gallery. Once
inside, they marveled at the beautiful artistry
inside and made themselves comfy in
the back room. The girls channeled their
hopes and dreams into their custom spell
bottles (see photo, right).
After a fun crystal ceremony and instruction
to place their bottles near their
beds at night, it was time to explore the
streets of downtown, where the kiddos
had fun utilizing the downtown murals for
silly photo ops before lunch.
Lunch was a pasta-lover’s dream at
Ventana Gourmet Grill, where the owners
had set up a special reserved table and
meal of salad, breadsticks and spaghetti.
Bellies and hearts full, it was time to get
back on the trolley for a cruise around
town that included more photo op stops
and ghost stories from the delightful trolley
driver.
No birthday celebration is complete
without dessert, so the final stop of the
day was Dari-B, 901 Isley Blvd., where
ice cream was enjoyed by all!
All in all, it was a beautiful day and
an amazing way to celebrate a birthday
for any age. It just goes to show that it
doesn’t matter how old
you are, you can plan
a full, amazing day
of fun in Excelsior
Springs!

Dreams Can Come True at Casa Di Vite
Walt Disney said, “All your dreams can
come true, if you have the courage to
pursue them.” And pursue their dreams
is just what Susan Blaser and her daughter,
Brittni Blaser have done with Casa Di
Vite.
They are first and foremost proud of
the history of the building their beloved
new venture resides in. Their beautiful
“Vine House” was originally built by Dr.
Thomas N. Bogart in the early 1900s.
He was a physician who specialized in
kidney diseases. Dr. Bogart studied at
European Springs, utlimately proving invaluable
to his study of the waters in Excelsior
Springs, and a large contributor
to the tourism the healing waters brought.

Today, Casa Di Vite has been completely
renovated to begin again as an
event and International wine venue. The
goal is to make every life event a memorable
and affordable one.
Events will provide a full service stressfree
occasion with elegant décor and
vendor management. The venue is a
historic building made of limestone with
interior brick walls in the main event
space, ensuring a romantic atmosphere.
Couples will have the availability of a
pre-event coordinator and each package
will include a coordinator the day of the
event. Intimate Affairs will be there every
step of the way for the couples’ big day.
The pre-designed packages will allow
couples to choose which style of décor
they want during their event. These packages
also offer add-on services through
preferred vendors for an additional fee.
Once a package is selected, Intimate Affairs
takes care of the details, including
but not limited to vendor services and
decorations. This unique service allows
for couples to have a stress-free wedding
with minimal costs.

It All Started With A Little Bit Of “Magic” Water
Excelsior Springs, the city with the magic
waters, came to be as a modern dwelling
in the year 1880. At the time, it was
basically a wheat field. From the Fishing
River, a spring water with a red coloring
flowed, becoming Siloam Spring and the
first of the mineral waters found in Excelsior
Springs. It is the only natural supply
of ferro-manganese mineral water in the
United States and one of only five known
worldwide. It’s also the spring that paved
the way for Excelsior Springs to become
what it is today.
The story goes like this: A local farmer,
Travis Mellion, was searching for help for
his daughter who was suffering from tuberculosis.
Mellion gave his daughter water
from the spring to drink and bathe in.
Within days, a drastic improvement in her
condition was observed; in just weeks,
she was cured. People took notice. Another
story of the healing properties of
the water comes from Civil War Veteran
Frederick Kuglar, who decided to test the
water on an unhealed gunshot wound.
He, too, found relief and a full recovery
from the waters.
From there, the owners of the property
platted the valley and formed a town.
Within a year’s time, 200 houses had settled
into the hilly terrace for newcomers
to call home. Visitors who had heard of
the magic waters came in droves, camping
in tents and covered wagons, to get
their hands on the waters.
After the discovery of the first water,
more than 40 more mineral water wells
and springs were identified, including
sodium bicarbonate, calcium bicarbonate
and saline sulphur. One of Excelsior’s
claims to fame is that we have more
groupings of mineral water than anywhere
else in the world. IN THE ENTIRE
WORLD!
Before long, visitors from larger metropolitan
areas caught interest in the
springs. Suddenly, due to high demand,
boarding houses and hotels were erected
and stage lines were put into place. Excelsior
continued to thrive with further construction
and expansion, even avoiding
the worst of the Great Depression thanks
to our status as a health resort oasis.
In the late 1950s, the good times took
a hit as some of the health benefits were
questioned and popularity of resort spa
towns declined.
Today, the springs still flow, although
access to them has diminished. City and
community civic groups are currently
working to restore mineral water pavilions
at as many sites as possible.
Our rich history helped make us what
we are, but we are even more than our
water. We have created a community
with deep roots in history and a huge passion
toward the future. We have two feet
moving forward while keeping an eye on
our past.
Our tourism industry is booming and
new businesses are opening up every
year, including new breweries, restaurants
and retail space with more to come
in the future.
We pride ourselves on being a unique,

Inside The Hall of Waters: A Little History, A Little
Mystery, and A Bit of An Uncertain Future
Ah, the Hall of Waters, what a beauty
to behold. The centerpiece of Downtown
Excelsior Springs, with its unique style and
architecture, is home to the World’s Longest
Water Bar.
The site of the Hall of Waters is where
the first spring water was discovered in
1880, the Siloam Spring. At the time, it
was the only natural supply of ferro-manganese
mineral water in the United States,
and one of only five known in the entire
world. A second ferro-manganese source,
the Regent Spring, was discovered in
1881. Altogether, four distinct kinds of
mineral water are located in Downtown
Excelsior Springs, with more varieties than
anywhere else on Earth.
On the side of architecture, the Hall of
Waters, at a whopping $1,000,000, was
the most ambitioius project to have been
undertaken by the Federal Public Works
Administration in Missouri. At its height, it
was the most completely outfitted health
resort in the state, and possibly the region.
Moreover, the building is notable and
unique in its outstanding Art Deco and Depression
Modern styling relating to water
and water gods.
By the late 1960s, the popularity of the
Hall of Waters and other local spas and
clinics began to decline as tourists ventured
elsewhere.
An increased interest brought a burst
of renewal in the 1980s, prompting the
continuation of mineral water bottling
and spa baths. The Hall of Waters water
bar and bath department remained in
operation under private contract until the
early 1990s, when building and water infrastructure
repairs forced the closing. To
this day, locals nostalgically recall days of
swimming in the basement pool and spending
their days at the Hall. Today, the Hall
of Waters houses the Visitor Center, Hall
Museum, city offices and municipal court.
Ghost Tours are held each month as well.
Unfortunately, The Hall of Waters water
bar area is currently closed so that structural
repairs can be made. Other areas of the
building are accessible for viewing.
The National Trust has named the Hall of
Waters in Excelsior Springs, Missouri one
of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic
Places. It is estimated that to complete
full repairs to the building, it will cost $16
million.
While there’s still a long way to go,
the City of Excelsior Springs has received
a $500,000 grant from the Department
of Interior, National Park Service (NPS)
funded through the Historic Preservation
Fund and Save America’s Treasurers grant
program, for the restoration of the Hall of
Waters.
The City of Excelsior Springs will provide
$500,000 in matching funds to address
a structural issue at the south end of the
water bar in the Hall of Springs, rehabilitate
the glass block and steel tower, repoint,
clean, and seal the north and west
exterior facades of the building including
stone replacement/repair, and repair the
lintels; replace damaged cast stone units
on guard rails and spot repoint, restore entrance
systems on the north and west side
and around the Hall of Springs, and miscellaneous
repairs as funds will allow.

They say the village is dead these days, but that’s not so much the
case when you live in a small town.
Amber Borchert has lived in Excelsior Springs her entire life. Calling
herself a “life longer,” she, unlike many that come from small town roots,
has never had the desire to live anywhere else. She and her husband,
Dustin, have two teenage boys, and raising them in a tightly knit community
has been an important part of their upbringing.
“As the boys get older, and the reality sets in that they will be leaving
soon to start their own lives, I am so happy that they always have Excelsior
to come back to,” Amber said. “This is their home.”
But it’s not just the rolling hills and the small population
she’s glad they grew up in - it’s the immense sense of
community.
“There is so much that I love about my town,” she
says, “But my absolute favorite thing is how we come
together as a community to show love and support to
those who need it. I’ve watched our town lift up the sick
with prayer, hold them in their hearts and rejoice together
when happy news was announced, and cry together when
things went south. There are so many groups of individuals
who band together when families fall on hard times. They
help provide them with not only food to keep their kids fed,
but opportunities for change and hugs of hope.”
Those hugs of hope extend to strangers and friends alike.
Born and raised, and then growing your own family in one
spot, provides a unique opportunity to grow with a group of
people, raise your children together, and thrive in the small town
feel instead of choosing to become stifled by it.
“The best way to describe it is SMALL TOWN FEEL, and I mean
that in the most positve way imaginable. We go to Wal-Mart,
and I run into my first grade teacher, who recognizes me still and
wants to know how I’m doing. We go out to dinner and we run
into my great aunt and uncle. We go to a sporting event, and run
into everyone we know and love. There are a lot of smiles, a lot
of laughs, and a lot of hugs.”
While it might seem like you’d have to have grown up here to
be a part of the “village,” that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Transplants and visitors often comment on the friendliness of Excelsior
Springs residents, and it’s true that it won’t take much time
at all to be brought into the fold. Stick around long enough, and
you may even be able to hear Amber’s cowbell ringing loudly
and proudly from the Tiger Stadium during Friday Night football
games, whether you’re there or not (it’s loud!).
After asking Amber where she suggests out-of-towners visit, she
had this to say, “I tell anyone and everyone that they HAVE to
visit our downtown area. From the amazing eating establishments
to our unique storefronts, our downtown is a must visit. Don’t
forget to check out the beautiful murals painted all around by
a local artist or take a stroll throughout our neat pocket parks

system for its citizens as a Fixed Route Service, with minor
deviations within the city limits. For local medical appointments,
