Book Review
by Thuy Le, Morningside resident
The People We Keep
by Allison Larkin
“I wonder if maybe all you do is meet people and lose them and your smile
fades the further you go because you have to carry the space they leave.
Maybe it all turns to old pictures on a bookshelf, engagement rings, memories
of sticking stars to a ceiling, and maybe the space gets bigger and heavier
every year.” ― Allison Larkin, The People We Keep
What would you do if the parents who were meant to love you, abandoned
you? What would you do if you were sixteen and you needed to survive on
your own? How would you keep a relationship when all you ever knew was to
leave when things got difficult?
The People We Keep, by Allison Larkin, is one story of courage, empathy, and
self-acceptance. The family you are born to is not always the family you are to
keep. The people we keep are those who stand with us when we are
struggling, who encourage us to reach for our goals, however impossible they
might be, who accept our flaws and imperfections and still love us for who we
are. Family is not always blood. It is those who understand our dreams, share
our challenges without judgment, and motivate us to be the best version of
ourselves who can be considered true family.
This book will make you cry, but also will make you smile. Although we might
encounter injustice and absurdities in our lifetimes, true connections with
people we love make them all worthwhile. This book will definitely stay with me
for a very long time.
