On the run for
the second time
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
It went so well the first
time, they’re doing it again!
The Merrimac Park Miracle
organization will host
the second annual London
Marathon and Half-
Marathon on April 30. London
resident David Mars
returns as the race director.
The inaugural event was
held this past spring, attracted
nearly 200 runners,
and raised $10,000 for improvements
to Merrimac
Park in London. Mars was
pleased with those results,
especially considering the
short time in which the race
was organized. With more
time to plan and promote,
he is hoping for even better
results the second time
around.
“We’re looking to improve on it, make it bigger, and give a bigger
check to Merrimac Miracle,” Mars said.
One of the biggest changes is the race
date. This year, the race took place in late
May. Organizers chose late April for next
Once again, the London Marathon
and Half-Marathon will have fun
with British references, including
mile markers featuring pictures of
landmarks one would see on the
London, England marathon course.
year’s race, the idea being that temperatures
typically are cooler at that time of
year, and, therefore, more ideal for runners.
(As it turned out, the temperatures
on race day this year were at record lows
for late May.)
Another change is the introduction of
checkpoints. Runners who are in the
lead at certain points along the course
will win prizes. It’s an extra incentive designed
to encourage faster racing and potentially
reward more runners. And
speaking of rewards, Mars is seeking
sponsorships to increase the prize money
for the winners. The aim is to attract
more elite runners.
The overall goal is to attract more
runners period—no matter how fast or experienced
they are—but there will be a
capacity cap of 600 runners.
While the date and some of the incentives
are new, one facet of the race that
is not changing is the flat, straight
course, which Mars considers to be one
of the event’s main selling points. Start-
Trucking toward Christmas
For the parade that kicked off West Jefferson’s Christmas in the Park, Phil Snyder drove his antique IH pickup
truck nicknamed “Jack,” decked out with Christmas lights and a tree in the back. Christmas in the Park took
place Dec. 11. The day started with high winds and rain and ended with dropping temperature, but spirits
were high as visitors enjoyed hot food and beverages, crafts, carriage rides, visits with Santa, and the light
display. The entertainment was cancelled when winds caused the loss of a tent. Mud was an issue in some
areas due to the playground construction. Despite the challenges, the night was a success. The lights will
be on at the park nightly through Jan. 1.
Jaxon Mendera, 2, and his brother, 4-year-old Jordan, smile for the camera. Afterwards, they excitedly told
Santa what they wanted for Christmas.

game in which they rolled a die and placed that many Goldfish snacks in the cave to
feed the Teddy Graham bears. Afterward, they ate the snacks they collected in the game.
ing and ending at Merrimac Park, the route runs through downtown
London, onto the bike path headed toward West Jefferson, and
to the turn-around point at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. The
out-and-back course is ideal for setting personal records.
“I think it’s a great course. As far as being fast, it doesn’t get
much faster. It’s very unique in that it is so straight. Most courses
are going to have loops; that might be more interesting, but it’s not
as fast. In marathons, momentum is your friend,” Mars said.
Another selling point: the course is USA Track & Field certified
which means it measures exactly 13.1 miles for the half-marathon
and exactly 26.2 miles for the full marathon. Times recorded at the
race can be used to meet qualifying standards for other races, such
as the Boston Marathon.
Organizers also are sticking with the British theme, having fun
with the London, Ohio /London, England concept. A bagpiper will
once again play at the start of the race. Mile markers will feature
pictures of landmarks one would see along the London, England
marathon course. Mars said a quintessential British-style phone
booth might even make an appearance.
Currently, entry fees are $70 for the half-marathon and $90 for
the full marathon. The prices increase after March 31. A halfmarathon
entry comes with a vintage-style race shirt with the race
logo, a finisher’s medal, and promotional offers from local businesses.
A full marathon entry comes with a full-zip, lightweight
hooded sweatshirt with the race logo, a finisher’s medal, and swag
from local businesses.
Start time for all runners is 7 a.m. The course will stay open for
five hours after the last competitor starts.
District thanks school board president for service
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
As the new year approaches, the Jefferson
Local school board is bidding goodbye to
President Melissa Adams as she finishes
her four-year board term.
Adams was elected as board president on
Jan. 11, 2021, after having previously
served as vice president. She joined the
West Jefferson community more than a
decade ago and is a volunteer with the West
Jefferson Youth Athletic Association and
Jefferson Local high school and middle
school athletics.
She was elected to the school board in
November 2017 and took office in January
2018.
“It’s been my pleasure to work with
Melissa for four years,” said Superintendent
William Mullett during the Dec. 14 school
board meeting.
Board Vice President Mike Quinn said
Adams has done an outstanding job as president
and that it has been a “real joy” to
know her.
“Three of us here have served as president,
and it certainly is a challenge,” said
board member David Harper, a past board
president. He noted that Adams served during
a year that included the successful negotiation
of two contracts.
Board member Dr. Meg Hiss said Adams
experienced many firsts in her four-year
term on the board. After accepting a plaque
of appreciation from Mullett, Adams said it
has truly been a pleasure to serve.
Adams did not run for re-election on the
Nov. 2 ballot. Incumbent Whitney Duemmel,
who was appointed to the board on
Aug. 10 following the passing of Jerry Doran
in June, retained her seat.
Addie Newman was the second top voter
getter and will be sworn in during the
board’s organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Jan. 10. The regular board meeting follows
at 7 p.m.
In other action, the board approved the
hiring of Maria Murray as the new middle
school art teacher effective Jan. 4 through
the end of the 2021-2022 school year. The
board also awarded Murray an extracurricular
contract to serve as the school’s art
show advisor.
Andrew Bevan resigned as middle school
head boys’ wrestling coach. Volunteer high
school assistant wrestling coaches Jake
Datz and James Violet also resigned. David
Skaggs will serve as the middle school head
wrestling coach with Bevan serving on a volunteer
basis as an assistant coach. Dylan
Wildman also will serve as a middle school
volunteer assistant coach.
The board approved Danni Hiles as a volunteer
middle school assistant girls’ basketball
coach and Shelby King as the middle
school yearbook advisor.
Board members also gave the go-ahead
to a TIF agreement for Columbus Logistics
Park West Land.
FOLLROD
Jerry Lee Follrod, 80, of Mount Sterling passed away
on Dec. 12, 2021, and is now at peace with the Lord.
Born on May 5, 1941, at White Cross Hospital to Clark
and Mary Jean Follrod, Jerry and his brother, John
(Lynn) Follrod ,were raised near Mount Sterling.
Jerry attended The Plains High School where he fell
for the love of his life and wife of 58 years, Phyllis
(Woods) Follrod. They raised three children, Barb (Tim)
Phillips, Tim Follrod, and Sandra (Rich) Bruton. A lifelong
farmer, Jerry worked for 20 years at Hewitt Acres
and 19 years at Orient Correctional managing farms
there, while at home he raised his own crop of 4-H projects
and a vegetable garden known far and wide.
Jerry could be found most summer days in a denim
shirt, blue jeans and a bucket hat, turning the year’s
harvest into shelves of canned goods, including jar after
jar of his famous green beans. He always had a dog at
his feet, most recently taking the truck for rides into
town with Baxter, coming home with Wendy’s. He belonged
to the Fielding Masonic Lodge and was a member
of the London chapter, Order of the Eastern Star
along with Phyllis.
He loved his family and his community, serving on
the Madison Plains school board and, after retirement,
obituaries
at the Madison County Food Pantry. He made sure to
instill in his children and grandchildren the values of
hard work and taking care of their neighbors. Each
year, he would set aside the first and best fruits of the
garden for the Newport Methodist Church where he
washed dishes after the fall supper.
An avid fisherman, he loved bringing home a cooler
full of walleye and never missed an opportunity for a
fish sandwich.
He was a tough but loving grandfather to Emily (Ian)
Blanchard, Kyle Phillips, Dylan Follrod, Erin (Logan)
Delk, Bailey Phillips, Owen Phillips, and Cole Bruton.
He would share stories, life lessons, interesting articles
and often a quiet handshake with a little cash. He was
a cherished uncle, cousin, respected neighbor, and
friend to many more.
He worked hard, provided well, and was strong in his
convictions. He was well loved and will be sorely missed.
‘Single All the Way’ is sure to warm the heart
I am not someone who makes fun of those
who enjoy an escape into the enchanting
land of the holiday romantic comedy, but I
also am not someone who typically wants to
spend time in that world.
In my opinion, they are the schmaltziest
romantic comedies put on steroids — triple
the fluff, quadruple the sentimentality, and
raise the level of sweetness to an intolerable
degree. They are very much too much,
which I am beginning to suspect may be a
part of the general appeal.
So, I was surprised when I recently found
myself desiring a journey into that world. I
lay the blame at the feet of Wham!
A few weeks, the band’s poppy—albeit
sad—hit, “Last Christmas,” spent hours running
through my head. That made me want
to revisit the 2019 British film inspired by
this song and the work of the late, great
George Michael. Since it wasn’t streaming
for free on any platforms, I placed “Last
Christmas” in my queue at the library and
was compelled to look for more of its kind.
Becky, Brittany, Grant, Jim & Kristy
During this bizarre snowball effect
prompted by my burgeoning holiday romantic
comedy impulses, I came across a new
film on Netflix called “Single All the Way.”
I quickly realized I am not exactly the target
demographic for this movie—it is directed
more toward gay men—but it just
looked so sweet that I couldn’t resist.
“Single All the Way” does not break any
new ground when it comes to holiday romantic
comedies, but it is groundbreaking in that
it does not succumb to the tropes that so
many films that feature gay people, or specifically
gay couples, do. In this film, there are
no unaccepting friends or families and no
awkward coming-out moments. There are no
side eyes or harmful words tossed their way
when they are out and about together. Instead,
“Single All the Way” is just an unapologetically
happy flick that is funny and
delightful and a true holiday gift for all.
Infusing the film with charm are Michael
Urie and Philemon Chambers who play
longtime friends and roommates, Peter and
Nick, respectively. Despite having a “meet
cute” moment upon arrival in L.A. years
prior, they have decided to keep their relationship
platonic, even though each has harbored
a crush on the other from time to time.
When the film begins, the perpetually
single Peter is finally in a romantic relationship
with a dreamy cardiologist who is
quickly stealing his heart (lots of heart pun
jokes to start the film — always a good sign).
Believing their relationship to be serious, he
invites Tim (Steven Lund) to join him in
New Hampshire for Christmas with his
family and is ecstatic when he accepts.
As things are apt to do, real life (and uncovered
lies) brings an abrupt end to Peter’s
blossoming relationship, leaving him brokenhearted
and wavering as he goes back to
see his well-intentioned but meddling loved
ones. “They always see (his singleness) as a
problem to be solved,” Peter laments to Nick.
Knowing Nick has no plans for the holidays,
Peter begs him to travel across the
country and pretend to be his boyfriend to
appease his family, a fantastic ensemble
cast led by Kathy Najimy who plays Peter’smother,
Carole (as in “Christmas Carole”),
Jennifer Coolidge as his eccentric aunt,
the reel deal
Dedra Cordle
Sandy, and Jennifer Robertson as his upbeat
and uptight sister, Lisa.
When the duo arrive in the small ski
town that runs primarily on holiday cheer,
their plans of romantic subterfuge crumble
when Carole announces she has set Peter up
on a blind date with her personal trainer,
James (Luke MacFarlane). Knowing his
mother’s obsession with his dating life,
Peter agrees to go on what is sure to be a
disastrous date. But just as Peter realizes
time spent with James might not be all that
bad, the rest of his family becomes convinced
Nick is the right man for him. And
they are going to do everything in their
power to make sure these two realize they
are in love.
What makes “Single All the Way” such a
fun watch is how it combines some of the
best tropes in romantic comedies, not just
holiday themed ones. It has meddling families,
squabbling families, families coming together
for a singular purpose, longing looks,
a wrench in the plan, homesickness, and the
delightful friends-to-lovers aspect. In this
film, however, there is some question as to
whether Peter and Nick will get together because
both have reservations about the potential
of losing their friendship should any
romantic relationship go sour.
While we all know how it will end, the
cast makes it a blast to get to that point, infusing
nearly every scene with warmth,
humor and joy. You can tell everyone had a
great time on this set, and that sense of enjoyment
translates to the viewer.
Though not a perfect film — there are pacing
issues and some clunky dialogue — “Single
All the Way” is an infectiously joyful
movie, one that is sure to warm the heart of
any true holiday romcom lover, and possibly
even the ones who are slowly thawing to its
awesome powers of feel-goodness.
Energetic Oak and loving Johnny seeking homes
The following are among the pets up for
adoption at the Humane Society of Madison
County. If you are interested in adopting a
pet, fill out an application online at
www.hsmcohio.org or call the shelter at
(614) 879-8368.
Oak
After being found
by a park ranger,
Oak arrived at the
shelter on Sept. 13.
Oak is a handsome
guy with unique
brindle and white
markings. He
weighs 55 pounds,
is about 3 years old,
and believed to be a
border collie/German shepherd mix. Oak is
a wild man with a heart of gold. He is very
active and would thrive best in an active
home. He likes going for walks and is working
on his leash manners. When he comes
out of his kennel, he is a big bundle of excitement
at first. Once he gets outside, he
settles down and enjoys his time out. He is
very food motivated and is learning basic
commands.
Oak is not to keen on the shenanigans of
other animals, so he will do best in a home
where he is the only furbaby (he just wants
all of the love for himself). This guy loves his
toys and will play his heart out until he is
ready for a snooze. He also seems to like
puzzle toys in which you can hide treats; he
will sniff them out. Because Oak has so
much energy, he would need a home with
older children who have experience around
high-energy dogs. Oak tries his hardest to
be a good boy and, with the right family,
this boy will shine!
Adoption fees for dogs vary: shelter dogs
are $150, prison dogs are $200, puppies are
$250, and popular pure-breeds are $400.
The price includes: a Home Again microchip,
set of shots, deworming, heartworm
testing (if old enough), spay or neuter, and
a one-year rabies shot (if old enough). All
dogs adopted must leave with a county license
at an additional cost of $17. Fees can
be paid by cash or credit card.
Johnny
Johnny arrived
at the shelter on
June 10, 2021. He
has an estimated
birthday of April
2021. He spent
some time in a foster
home so that he
could gain confidence
and learn to
trust humans.
Johnny lives
with other cats and
dogs and loves
them. He loves people, too, and enjoys snuggling
up to you for a cozy nap. He is a very
sweet and loving cat that cannot wait to find
his forever home.
The adoption fee is $80 for kittens up to
6 months old and $60 for cats 7 months and
older. It includes: a FeLV/FIV test, spay or
neuter, set of shots, deworming, and a oneyear
rabies shot (if old enough). Fees can be
paid by cash or credit card.

WELCOMES NEW AGENT, RICHELLE MABRA
Please help us welcome Richelle Mabra
to the RE/MAX Leading Edge Family!
Richelle Mabra is a lifetime resident of London, Ohio. She has
become more active in the community when it comes to the
future of the children and the future of London. She is the
current President of the Merri Mac Park Miracle, which is a citizen
committee that has been instrumental in raising funds for the
revitalization of Merri Mac Park in London. She started a group
called The Village in 2019 that held events for the children such
as Halloween and pool parties. In 2020 The Village helped those in need during
the pandemic with raising money for groceries or just locating the products
they needed that they were not able to find. The Village delivered groceries and
other items to the elderly to keep them safe at home.
Two words that describe Richelle, Goal-Driven and Pride.
Goal-Driven is how her clients would describe her and how she approaches
every real estate transaction. Richelle’s goal is to get you the best result possible
whether you are buying or selling.
Richelle takes pride in knowing the real estate agent she is working with on the
other side of a transaction and they always say Richelle was great to deal with. In
this profession working well with others makes an offer go a long way. Richelle
also takes pride in knowing the offer made or accepted was the best offer her
client could give or receive. Richelle works for referrals so the best way to
continue to get business is to do a great job for her clients so they continue to
refer her to their friends and family.
You’ll never say “I wasn’t able to get a hold of my agent” as Richelle tries her best
to be available 24/7. Richelle knows important things come to mind and you
just have to send that text or email in the middle of the night or early morning
and she responds to that communication the moment it comes to her
attention.
If you are looking for someone who will be goal-driven to get you the best result
possible and takes pride in her work, Richelle is the real estate agent for you.
You can reach Richelle Mabra anytime at (614) 270-0875 or
Smiles abound at Shop with a Sheriff event
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Imagine being a guest of honor in a caravan of sheriff’s cruisers
with lights flashing, shopping for Christmas presents with a deputy,
then hanging out afterwards, eating pizza.
Season’s
Greetings
When life slows down, the beauty
of what matters most comes into focus.
We wish everyone a blessed and healthy holiday
filled with love and friendship.
Merry Christmas!
experienced exactly that the evening of Dec.
8 as they participated in “Shop with a Sheriff,”
courtesy of the Madison County Sheriff’s
Office. They ranged in age from
kindergarten to sixth grade.
“We love doing this to see the smiles on
the kids’ faces,” said Deputy Birdie Roberts,
who has helped to coordinate Shop with a
Sheriff the past 12 years. This year marks
the third consecutive year the program has
benefitted Madison-Plains youths.
Roberts starts by consulting school principals
and secretaries to select children to
participate. She gathers information about
the children’s wants and needs from their
parents or guardians, then sets a date for
the shopping outing.
This year, the children and deputies met
at the Coughlin Community Center on the
Madison County Fairgrounds. The guests of
honor were transported by cruisers to Shoe
Sensations in London where they picked out
new shoes and socks. They then traveled to
Walmart to pick out the fun stuff—toys,
games, dolls, you name it. Some of the children
picked out items not only for themselves,
but for their siblings and/or parents,
too. They did it all with the one-on-one help
of deputies and members of the deputies’ families.
“Working at the Sheriff’s Office, I always say it’s a family thing.
So, when we do something like this, we always include our own families,”
Roberts said.
She and her fellow Shop with a Sheriff organizers also make a
point of shopping at local stores and patronizing a local restaurant
for the post-shopping dinner—this year, it was Cappy’s Pizza. Shoe
Sensation provided a discount, making it possible for each child to
go home with two pairs of shoes, instead of one. Walmart provided
Warmest Wishes!
Lots of fun was had by volunteers and children at this year’s Shop
with a Sheriff as they filled their carts at Walmart in London.
a discount, too, helping to stretch the program’s
funding.
Coughlin Automotive sponsors Shop with
a Sheriff, covering all of the shopping and
pizza party expenses. The Madison County
Sheriff’s Association covers the cost of gift
wrapping supplies. Tom Coughlin and his
family are among the volunteers who shop
with the children, wrap the gifts, and hang
out with the kids at the pizza party.
The in-person facet of the event did not
happen last year due to the pandemic, but
the Sheriff’s Office still made Christmas joy
happen.
“The deputies shopped for the gifts and
More school tours coming up
dropped them off to the kids. We wanted to make sure COVID didn’t
stop them from getting Christmas gifts,” Roberts said.
The Sheriff’s Office keeps up the annual tradition as a way to
help families and children in the community and to make positive
connections.
“We do this so kids know cops are not bad people. It’s a chance
for them to maybe get a rapport with us. It’s a comfort thing. We
want them to know that anytime they anything, they can feel comfortable
coming to talk to us,” Roberts said.
London City Schools Superintendent Dr.
Lou Kramer is hosting community tours
and information sessions for parents and
community members who would like to
learn more about the district. Those who
participate receive a tour of each of the district’s
schools, a first-hand look at several of
the district’s programs, and have the opportunity
to participate in a Q&A session with
Kramer, other staff members, and students.
Tours 9:30-11 a.m. Jan. 12 and Jan. 26. Parents and community
members interested in participating can sign up by calling (740)
