Snowy owl visits West Jeff:
‘Beautiful sight’
In mid-December, word among bird enthusiasts made the rounds
about sightings of a snowy owl in West Jefferson.
Snowy owls, the largest North American owls by weight, spend
their summers north of the Arctic Circle. In winter, some migrate
to southern Canada and the northern half of the contiguous United
States.
According to information on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website,
snowy owls are seen regularly in winter in the northern plains,
New York and New England. Elsewhere, such as the Midwest, they
appear in some winters but not in others.
With sightings in Ohio being uncommon and the snowy owl
being such a striking bird, birders from around the state made their
way to West Jefferson for a look. The target area was near the Moen
Enterprises and Medline Industries distribution centers off of Route
40 on the west side of West Jefferson.
Madison Messenger photographer and West Jefferson resident
Jeff Pfeil went to check it out. Over the course of several days, he
made several attempts to catch a glimpse of the big white bird with
yellow eyes and dark markings. He finally was there at the right
time on Dec. 13. Here is his account:
“After I made four trips to try to find the snowy owl in West Jefferson,
she finally made her appearance a little after 5 p.m. She
had spent the day on top of the Moen warehouse. She landed on a
lamppost about 50 yards away from where we were standing and
stayed on top for about 10 minutes before taking flight again.
“I met up with a couple of people armed with long-range camera
lenses to catch the snowy owl. Chris Veach from Hilliard and Randy
Vermillion from Grove City were waiting
patiently for her arrival. They had been
there the previous afternoon and anticipated
she would come flying from the
building to land on a lamppost.
“I also met people from Bowling Green
who were in the area waiting to pick up
family at Port Columbus, which was running
late, so they decided to come to West
Jefferson hoping to see the snowy owl.
Earlier I saw a car with license tags from
Montgomery County.”
About witnessing the snowy owl in
flight, Pfeil added, “Such a beautiful sight
to see.”
Many birders submit information about
sightings of all kinds to ebird.org, a site
managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
The submissions includes dates and
locations. Users can sign up to receive rare
bird alerts by location and species. The
listings go back seven days. As of Dec. 23,
propriations budget for 2022 and the union contracts.
Council also approved a $100,000 increase in appropriations for
the fire department. Council member Brenda Russell explained that
a fire department employee is retiring, and the department needs
the money to pay out that person’s unused sick leave and vacation
time. The increase also is needed to cover the three pay periods in
February. Russell noted the funds are coming from the fire department’s
funds, not the city’s general fund.
Council president Henry Comer administered the oath of office
to newly elected and re-elected council members whose terms start
Jan. 1, 2022.
Several council members thanked Carla Blazier and Brenda
Russell for their service to council. Both lost their bids for re-election
in the Nov. 2 general election.
Blazier thanked her fellow council members and the many city
employees who helped her through the learning curve that comes
with being a council member.
“I’m happy that as a council group, we have made some definite
strides for London in the last two years. And I hope that you guys
work together to keep that going. I have enjoyed my time here,”
Blazier said.
Russell encouraged women and minorities to run for office to return
diversity to council.
when they are young and turn whiter as they age. Females keep
some of their dark markings throughout their lives.
• Unlike most owls, snowy owls hunt at all hours of the day in
summer and can eat more than 1,600 lemmings in a year.
• In winter, they can be seen in open areas such as fields and
shorelines. They like to perch on haystacks, posts, telephone poles and
buildings. They also can be found on the ground in open country.
Their cameras outfitted with long lenses, Chris Veach of Hilliard
and Randy Vermillion of Grove City traveled to West Jefferson in
December to get photos of a snowy owl. Sightings of the snowy
owl are uncommon in Ohio.

Check out what local librarians have been reading
Following a longstanding tradition, the
Madison Messenger pried into the personal
reading habits of local librarians to compile
a list of their favorite reads from the past
year. The exercise lets readers get to know
their local keepers of the orderly shelves a
little better, while at the same time introducing
them to authors and genres they
might like to explore moving into the new
year. Here’s what four Madison County librarians
had to say—in some cases, in their
own words, and in other cases, via the interview
process.
Luke Powers, adult services librarian
Plain City Public Library
I read mostly non-fiction. The books
listed here are about the U.S. Civil war.
During the pandemic, my wife and I rewatched
the PBS documentary, Ken Burns’
“The Civil War” and became obsessed with
the subject. We took a deep dive into General
Grant specifically, visited our first Civil
War battlefield, and planned additional visits
to other Civil War battlefields and sites.
My favorite that I’ve read this year was
“Grant” by Ron Chernow. This is a fairy exhaustive
biography that seeks to correct misconceptions
about General Grant created by
Lost Cause historians. Chernow paints a fair
picture of the general, the president, and the
man that was Ulysses S. Grant, victorious
commander of all United Stated armed
forces during the U.S. Civil War.
I followed this up with “The Civil War:
A Narrative, Volume 1” by Shelby Foote.
This is one of the most exhaustive books covering
the Civil War. Using narrative to tell
the story of the war puts readers right into
the action of the story. The book and interviews
with its author form the basis of much
of the Ken Burns film, “The Civil War.” The
writing is superb to be sure. I have two more
volumes to dig into in the coming year.
I also read a couple of graphic novel series
this year, one based on the Netflix
show, “Stranger Things,” and another titled
“Bitter Root.” “Bitter Root” is sort of about
personified racism but with all the comic
book heroism, action and mythology of a
standard Marvel or DC comic.
Here are the three most recent books I
have read:
• “The Initial Insult” by Mindy McGinnis—There
has probably been a time in
everyone’s lives when they have been lied to
by someone close to them, and the repercussions
were felt primarily by the one being
lied to. In “The Initial Insult,” Tress, the
lead character, has been lied to for years by
Felicity, her best friend in the world. All
Tress wants to know is what happened to
her parents the night they disappeared
while taking Felicity home after she insisted
on leaving a sleepover Tress was hosting.
All these years later, Tress finally reaches
her breaking point. She kidnaps her ex-best
friend and plans to hold her hostage under
threat of death to finally learn the truth.
Mindy McGinnis never disappoints with
her true to life stories that don’t usually have
the happy fairytale ending. They are raw and
they are real. You feel them in your heart
long after you have finished reading the story.
• “Whiskey Words and a Shovel” by R.H.
Sin—This is one of the most inspiring books
of poetry I have ever read. Each poem feels
more like a short story, and each one packs
a very profound message. The overall purpose
of these writings definitely seems
aimed at remembering your self-worth,
choosing to love yourself no matter the cost,
and trying to forge new paths in your life
that better serve you.
I am not one that usually reads poetry in
general, but after skimming just a couple of
the poems, I felt that I had to give the book
a chance. Two hours later, I had read it
cover to cover and found myself flipping
back through to read some of my favorites
multiple times.
• “Grace and Glory,” the third and final
book in the Harbinger series by Jennifer Armentrout—This
is a young adult fantasy set
in present day United States, the major difference
being that gargoyles exist as protectors
of the human race. They protect us from
demons and all things evil, including a certain
fallen angel with whom we are familiar,
as well as a few characters that are supposed
to work for the other team, God and
His angels. If you are a fan of paranormal
or fantasy fiction, I recommend giving the
Harbinger series a try.
Armentrout does a great job of sprinkling
in romance, friendship, comic relief, and
personal tragedy, all while fighting the ultimate
battle to save Earth and all of
mankind. You will find yourself laughing
out loud at Trinity’s antics and admiring
Zane’s unending patience and love for her,
while trying to figure out who is truly good
and who is truly evil.
Jeanne Wilt, assistant librarian
Mount Sterling Public Library
Both of Jeanne Wilt’s top picks for the
year are inspirational in nature, but their
stories are set in very different worlds.
The first is Wanda Brunstetter’s Amish
Greenhouse Mystery Series. The third book
in the series, “The Robin’s Greeting,” came
out in March 2021. Jeanne also has read the
first two books, “The Crow’s Call” and “The
Mockingbird’s Song.” When the books first
became available at the library, she said she
took them home immediately to read.
“The characters are usually very positive
and uplifting. There’s usually a little bit of
mystery and a little bit of romance in the
books, hardly ever violence or strong language.
I like to read things that are positive
and uplifting, especially in today’s world,”
Jeanne said.
She also likes the works of Kathleen
Fuller, another author whose stories are set
in Amish country. Both Brunstetter and
Lewis have real-life ties to the Amish community,
so they know what they’re writing
about, Jeanne said.
Jeanne’s second pick is the Shenandoah
Sisters Series by Michael Phillips. The four
books in the series are: “Angels Watching
Over Me,” “A Day to Pick Your Own Cotton,”
“The Color of Your Skin Ain’t the Color of
Your Heart,” and “Together is All We Need.”
She happened upon the first two books while
straightening the library shelves.
“They take place after the Civil War. I’ve
just always been interested in that period of
history, particularly the Underground Railroad,”
she said. “I used to teach third grade at
Madison-Plains. During Black History Month,
I always shared books about the Underground
Railroad. We would really get into it.”
Jeanne is about to start reading the
fourth book in the series.
“I’m anxious to find out what happens to
these two girls who happen to end up together
due to circumstances in their families.
One girl was a slave on the plantation
where the main character lives. After the
war, they end up alone together. It’s the
type of book you just can’t put down until
you finish it,” she said.
Allison Ratcliff has a book or an e-reader in
her hand. She talked about some of the titles
that occupied her free time this year.
• “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover is
about a woman whose mother endured domestic
violence and then the woman finds
herself in the same situation. Allison’s sister-in-law
and a co-worker both recommended
the book.
“I could probably talk about this book forever.
It made me see domestic abuse victims
in a completely different light,” Allison said.
“It’s easy to say you would never find yourself
in that situation, but when you read
about the different facets of relationships,
you realize how difficult it really is to get
out of that situation.”
• A huge fan of contemporary romance
novels, Allison describes “Much Ado About
You” by Samantha Young as a “nice, little,
happy romance.”
“It’s about a girl named Evie who decides
she needs a big change in her life. She quits
her job in Chicago, moves to a small English
village and temporarily runs a small bookstore
called ‘Much Ado About Books.’ The
story is about her finding out what she
wants to do with her life,” Allison said.
• Allison finished the Throne of Glass series
by Sarah J. Maas, reading book No. 7,
“Kingdom of Ash.” This young adult fantasy
series centers on a teenage girl who is raised
as an assassin. A corrupt ruler overtakes
the kingdom, and the heroine is imprisoned.
A prince saves her to become the king’s
champion, but she soon uncovers secrets
about the king and herself. Magic is involved.
She shifts gears in an attempt to
Selection process leads to questionable outcomes
Intense competition has always been a part of our society. Our representing 209 AKC sanctioned
breeds. In theory, they guest column sus opinion rather than just
Show level so there’s a consen-
quest to define who’s on top seems endless. Too often, the criteria
we use to select winners is poorly constructed, leading to needless all represented the best of the
one?
second-guessing.
best, meeting all the stringent Dave Burton
There are 16 breeds that
These decisions are made using objective or subjective approaches
objective conformation standards
have never won Best in Show
or a combination of both. The former uses criteria that,
hopefully, is not influenced by personal viewpoints. The latter is the
opposite; conclusions are based on personal preferences. Throw in
inherent biases, and you create a muddled mess.
I’ve never been a fan of results gained through a subjective approach.
I prefer that selection of winners rely predominantly on
strictly defined objective standards that minimize opinion, leaving
me feeling confident that the accolades are going to something who
is truly deserving.
It’s been some time since I wrote about the epitome of the subjective
approach, that annual pompous pup event known as The
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Since it’s coming up again
(Jan. 24-25), I thought it worthy of rehashing.
As much as I love dogs, I’ve never been a huge fan of dog shows,
other than I do enjoy learning about the different breeds. To me,
the results are rarely convincing, just far too subjective. The AKC
seems intent on keeping it that way.
The upcoming Westminster show will be the 146th; the first was
held in 1877. Last year saw 2,500 dogs entered from near and far,
set for their respective
breeds.
Thus, the process to identify the best becomes totally
subjective, the opinion of just one judge at each step as
one dog advances from Best of Breed to Best of Group
(herding, hound, toy, non-sporting, sporting, terrier,
working) to Best of Show. Each judge spends but a few
short minutes evaluating each dog, somehow committing
thoughts to memory as they move along and finally
select. Ultimately, the Best of Show choice comes out of
this archaic process.
Suppose you were judging the golden retriever breed
and had to pick one. Last year, there were 44 entered,
the most breed entries in the show. Then at the sporting
group level, there were 32 breeds to evaluate and pick
one from. The Best in Show judge has it easy, having to
pick one from the seven group winners. I don’t know
how the judges do it. Why not consider adapting the
process to incorporate a panel of judges at the Best of
over the show’s long history.
The list includes fan favorites like golden retrievers,
Labrador retrievers and dachshunds. Yet some breeds
have won multiple times, various terriers 34 times, the
wire haired terrier 12 of those. If all breeds meet their
AKC defined standards for objectivity purposes, how
can this be? There’s obviously something amiss that’s
overriding the law of averages for those that haven’t
won.
I’ll force myself to watch the upcoming Westminster
Kennel Club Dog Show, just as I always do. Will this finally
be the year my favorite breed, the golden retriever,
wins? Right, and Cleveland’s teams will also
win this year’s World Series and Super Bowl. Just as
General Custer disgustedly mumbled at the Little
Bighorn, “Men, there’s always hope.”
Dave Burton is a guest columnist for the Columbus Messenger
Newspapers. He lives in Grove City.
‘Nightmare Alley’ proves to be a stunning letdown
Have you come across a recipe you thought you were going to
love? You might have had reservations about the prep time, but you
knew the combination of ingredients would be worth the effort.
Have you ever had such a recipe then taste like complete rubbish
through no fault of your own? And while you might later realize it
wasn’t “complete rubbish” because you liked that sprig of mint or
something, the end result was all the same: something that was not
what you wanted, not what you needed, nor what you expected.
The experience of disappointing food can be applied to just about
any other thing that intrigues you and ultimately lets you down.
For instance, that recipe metaphor is the best way I can relay how
I felt after watching “Nightmare Alley.”
“Nightmare Alley” is that recipe in a magazine or a cookbook that
catches your eye. It paints a beautiful and stylish picture of its product
(don’t they all?), but what keeps it there are the ingredients promised
inside, all of those darker thematic elements you love to see
coming together for what could be an unusual and compelling film.
Instead, you get a slow-simmering and time-consuming mess
that has just enough panache to make you not completely hate it
no matter how much you want to.
“Nightmare Alley” begins with a mysterious flourish: a body
carelessly wrapped in sheets being dragged across a dirty, dusty
floor. The person doing the dragging is Stanton Carlisle (played by
Bradley Cooper), who promptly lights the place on fire, but not before
donning a sweet fedora and lighting a cigarette. In this scene,
the first of many gorgeous shots peppered throughout the film,
Stanton looks like Indiana Jones preparing for a grand adventure,
but the film makes it clear from the jump that Stanton is no hero.
Rather than rushing off into the jungle while on the lam (the film
is primarily set in the Midwest circa the 1940s), Stanton finds the
perfect spot in a traveling carnival full of misfits who “pay no mind
to what you’ve done in the past.” Initially, Stanton takes a job as a
roustabout as they go from town to town, but eventually he begins
to learn the tricks of the mentalist trade from “seer” Zeena (Toni
Collette) and her alcoholic husband, Pete (David Strathairn).
After a particularly inspired act that saves the carnival from the
wrong end of the law (think snake oil preachers who probably bury
“stolen” money in their walls), Stanton believes he is “ready for the
big time” and asks the sweet natured ingenue, Molly Cahill (Rooney
Mara), to join him in a two-person swindling, er, performing act.
Two years later, the duo has established roots in New York
where they perform shows for
the wealthy in hotels. Through
Dedra Cordle
There are so many things to
like, and even love, about this
movie: it has a terrific cast, it’s
stylish and visually arresting, and it has a punch-in-thegut
ending that makes an impact despite hints along
the way that it was bound to happen. But for however
hard this film tries to be something different and engaging,
there is a disconnect. It is presented as a genuine
adult thriller, but it comes across as maddeningly slow
and not at all thrilling.
Right to Life president seeks statement retraction
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Brendan Shea, president of Madison County Right
to Life, made a second request that Henry Comer, London
city council president, retract statements he made
about the level of public support for legislation that, if
passed, would have banned abortion in the city. Council
voted down the legislation on Nov. 18.
At the Nov. 18 meeting, Comer stated, “We had an
overwhelming majority of people who, through emails,
through Facebook, through presence in council meetings,
that were not for this legislation. We’ve heard it
over and over. We’ve heard it through the committee,
and we’ve had a sprinkling of people who were for this.”
At council’s Dec. 16 meeting, Shea presented council
with numbers he gleaned from public records of meetings
and communications that involved the abortion ban
legislation. He had done the same at council’s Dec. 2
meeting. The information he presented showed that a
majority of the people who registered their opinion with
the city were in favor of the legislation. He also provided
photos of a March for Life that took place in London on
Oct. 7, the same day the legislation was introduced at
council, in which 75 people took part.
About his request that Comer retract his statement,
Shea said on Dec. 16, “This is about having an accurate
record of what transpired and where London residents
were and are on this issue, because this is not going
away. It will come back. Regardless of what the
Supreme Court decides in the Dobbs case, this issue and
these decisions are not going away.
“I and countless others will not stop fighting on behalf
of all children, including those who reside in their
mothers’ wombs. And my interest is to ensure that
when this comes up again, whether it’s next year or next
decade, the record accurately reflects that in 2021 more
London residents weighed in support of, rather than opposed
to, making London a sanctuary city for the unborn.”
In response to Shea’s repeated request for a retraction,
Comer said there was no way to know exactly how
many people were for or against the issue because some
who attended the meetings did not speak.
“It’s not provable,” Comer said. He did not offer a retraction.
London resident George Schwartz spoke at the Dec.
16 meeting about the way the vote on the abortion ban
unfolded.
Council held the first reading on the proposed legislation
at its Oct. 7 meeting, then moved discussions to
committee meetings before bringing it back before full
council for a second reading on Nov. 18. On Nov. 18,
council voted 6-1 to suspend the three-reading rule and
vote on the proposal on second reading, rather than wait
until a third reading. Council member Anthony Smith
cast the lone “no” vote on the suspension. Council then
voted down the legislation.
Schwartz alleges that council members colluded to
bring the measure to an early vote. He said he is disappointed,
not upset, the measure did not pass.
“What we are angry about is the shell game you
played with the vote date and deciding early on you
would vote it down. Indeed, that was quite the dog-andpony
show you put on at the Nov. 18 meeting,” he said.
He later added, “As for all of you who voted against
(the legislation), we now know it was a setup from the
get-go. Shame on all of you for being dishonest and then
trying to cover your butts when exposed.”
Members of council and Mayor Patrick Closser
stated at the previous meeting that there was no collusion.
Megan Douglas, a London resident and former city
council member, addressed council on Dec. 16 about the
amount of time Comer allowed for public participation
at meetings at which the abortion ban was discussed—
two minutes per person. Douglas noted the city website
and information displayed at council meetings state
that residents who wish to address council are allowed
five minutes to speak.
“They came to speak to you so they would know their
voice was being heard, instead of sending an email or
voicemail that just could be deleted, unread, or unheard,”
Douglas said. “As far as I can see, these people
have been nothing but civil and have abided by your arbitrary
rules you made up as you went along, yet you
insist on disenfranchising them with our government
system by cutting them out of the process simply because you don’t
want to hear their criticism of your actions or because you want a
nice, short meeting.”
Council member Brenda Russell said the speaking time was
changed for both the council and committee meetings. She noted
that residents were permitted to speak at committee meetings
which isn’t usually the case. She said the council president can
change the speaking time. She also said time was a factor that was
considered.
“We kind of weighed it out, so it wasn’t a sneaky, underhanded,
cowardly, manipulative way to maneuver what we wanted,” Russell
said.
About the speaking time and the allegations of collusion, she
added, “I am so tired of being called sneaky, dishonest and underhanded.
You want to know why nobody’s on the ballot to run for
these positions? It’s because that’s what we get. That’s the treatment
we get… No respect at all.”
FORECLOSURE OF MORTGAGE
Common Pleas Court, Madison County, Ohio
Case No. CV 20210175
CME Federal Credit Union
vs.
William J. Hart, et al.
Defendants Unknown Heirs, Fiduciaries, Beneficiaries, Donees and/or Devisees of Carole A. Hart
aka Carol Hart; William J. Hart; and Unknown Spouse, if any, of William J. Hart, whose last known
addresses are unknown, are hereby notified that CME Federal Credit Union filed a Complaint in
the Common Pleas Court of Madison County, Ohio in Case No. CV 20210175 against them, alleging
that on February 2, 2004, William J. Hart and Carole A. Hart aka Carol Hart executed a promissory
note to Plaintiff; that William J. Hart and Carole A. Hart aka Carol Hart have defaulted in the payment
of said note, and there is due Plaintiff thereon $4,351.23 with interest at the variable rate set
forth therein, which is currently 4.25% per annum, from May 4, 2021; that in order to secure the
promissory note, William J. Hart and Carole A. Hart aka Carol Hart executed and delivered a
mortgage deed to Plaintiff, and conveyed the following described real estate:
Parcel No.: 17-00617.000
Address: 11480 State Route 56 SE, Mt. Sterling, Ohio 43143
Plaintiff says that said mortgage was delivered to the Recorder of Madison County, Ohio on
February 10, 2004 and was recorded in OR 179, Page 859, and is the first and best lien on said
premises save the lien of taxes and assessments and the costs of this action.
That by reason of the failure of William J. Hart and Carole A. Hart aka Carol Hart to make the
monthly payments as required, the Plaintiff has declared the entire amount due and mortgage
securing such note to be absolute; that the Treasurer of Madison County, Ohio; Unknown Heirs,
Fiduciaries, Beneficiaries, Donees and/or Devisees of Carole A. Hart aka Carol Hart; William J. Hart;
and Unknown Spouse, if any, of William J. Hart, may have a claim against said premises. Therefore,
Plaintiff prays for judgment in the sum of $4,351.23 on the note set forth in the First Cause of
Action, together with interest currently at the rate of 4.25% per annum from May 4, 2021 plus
interest, late charges, advances and penalties: that the mortgage set forth in the Second Cause of
Action be foreclosed and all equities of redemption be forever cut off; that Plaintiff be found to
have the first and best lien herein, save the lien of taxes and assessments and the costs of this
action, and that the priority of all liens be determined by this Court; that said premises be sold as
upon execution free and clear of all liens, interest and dower, and the proceeds thereof applied to
the Plaintiff’s claim set out in the foregoing complaint and the Plaintiff may have such other and
further relief to which it may be entitled at law or in equity.
Defendants first hereinabove named are further notified that they are required to answer said
Complaint on or before February 6, 2022 which includes 28 days from the last publication, or judgment
may be rendered as prayed for therein.
