President’s Message

Michael Gordon

Dear Members of Temple Adas Shalom,

I am saddened to bring you the news that Rabbi Franken informed us within

the past few days of his intention to conclude his duties at Temple Adas Shalom

on or about September 30, 2022. An earned sabbatical will be worked in

between now and that date. The pandemic has caused many of us to rethink

our priorities and life choices. This happens to rabbis as well, and Rabbi

Franken is considering several paths for his future. In any event, we will wish

him only the best, as he does us, and we will both work toward a smooth

transition as we gear up our Search Committee for a new spiritual leader.

We anticipate the Search Committee will begin its work in mid-January. Our

goal is to complete the process, with the aid of the CCAR Placement

Commission, by July 1, 2022. Melissa Immel and Wendy Drabinski have agreed

to serve as the Co-Chairs for the Rabbi Search Committee. Our goal is to

develop a process that is inclusive, fair, and that takes into account the many

and varied needs and opinions of the members of our congregation. We will

look to the congregation for a team of approximately 15 individuals that

comprise the many constituencies and demographics of our congregation.

These will include, but are not limited, to:

1. Members of the Religious Practices Committee

2. Former Board members and/or Presidents

3. Jewish members of interfaith marriages

4. Jews by Choice

5. Individuals representing different age groups and various lengths of membership

6. Adas Shalom Temple Youth Group (ASTY)

7. Current staff and parents from the religious school

8. Parents of toddlers

9. Members of affiliated groups (e.g., Sisterhood, etc.)

Many, if not all, members of the committee will represent more than one of

these constituencies – our intent is to not “overload” the committee in favor of

any one demographic. We also anticipate a roughly even distribution of men

and women on this committee.

4 | P a g e

President’s Message

Michael Gordon

Duties of the committee will include reviewing congregational survey results on

desired attributes of our Rabbi, developing an application for a Rabbi to the

Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), reviewing applicant

documentation, interviewing candidates by phone and/or in person, setting up

congregational meetings with finalists, and making a final recommendation to

the Board of Trustees on a selection. We anticipate a relatively streamlined

process, as all of these items were newly updated in 2019.

If you are interested in serving, please contact Melissa Immel

(rpc@templeadasshalom.org) or Wendy Drabinski (wendy.drabinski@gdit.com) on or

before Friday, December 31. Please indicate all applicable demographic

information (from the 9 categories above), so that we can be assured of a

balanced committee without having to call back to obtain this information.

I look forward to working with the Search Team!

Mike Gordon, Board President of Temple Adas Shalom

Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

Happy Winter from the Religious Practices Committee!

We hope you had an opportunity during the Hanukkah season to take

time away from your regular schedule and enjoy yourself with friends

and family. Thank you to the Temple families who led us in lighting the

Outdoor Menorah and for your creative activities via ZOOM! We thank

the Walton, Kolstad, Baker, Mullis, Marksamer, Meyers, Cogan, Needel,

Immel, Wolkow families, as well as the Kehillah MAGNET class families

- Great job!

Join us, safely, for the month of January through the Virtual Experience

ZOOM link on the Temple's calendar. Torah readings will be on January

14th and January 21st. Last but certainly not least, Patrick Drabinski

leads us in a not to be missed joyful Shabbat Torah Service on January

21st. This not-to-be-missed service features music by the TAS Choir and

the chanting of the 10 Commandments by Dr. Brad Cogan and one of

our newest synagogue members, Jeff Nathan.

Hope to see you soon!

Fundraising Announcement

Terry Weiner

1. To join the program, you need to visit ShopwithScrip.com. Sign up for an account

using our organization code: C8WI7XN6IQBW.

2. Follow all the prompts such as setting up your username, password, etc.

3. A screen will pop up asking you to enter the verification code sent to the email

that you registered with on the previous page.

4. You will get a box on the website that asks you to link your bank account. This is

where a number of people are having problems.

5. Enter all the information required under manually enter information. THIS IS

information, you will not be able to successfully place your orders.

6. You will get a notification that lets you know that one or two small deposits have

been made to that account. You will need to go into your banking website and

account transactions to see these amounts – these amounts need to be verified in

the ShopwithScrip.com website.

7. Once all these steps have been completed, you should be good to go.

8. Now you can sign up through the RaiseRight App with the organization code

Important things to remember:

Only pay for your gift cards with your bank account. Do not use the credit card option

as you will pay 2.65% on your total order. Please do not pay with a check – when

notifications are sent to me with orders that were paid by check, you will be contacted

that we cannot process these orders. At that time, the orders will be canceled. BANK

When you purchase your gift cards, each order (can be a variety of vendors – ecards as well as

hard gift cards) will incur a processing charge of fifteen cents ($.15) per order, not per card.

If you purchase hard cards (traditional cards that you purchase in stores), make sure you have

them sent to the fundraising coordinator. Temple Adas Shalom is picking up this

charge of $8.75 per order shipped so you will not have to pay the shipping charge. If

you have the option to SHIP AT HOME, you will be paying $8.75 plus $.50 per card up

to a maximum of 16 cards which costs as much as $16.75 per order.

8 | P a g e

Fundraising Announcement Con’t

Terry Weiner

During the course of the year, orders will be placed at least once a month if there is very

little activity and up to once a week, especially during the holidays. Once the cards are

received and validated by the coordinator (traditional gift cards only), you will receive an

email/phone call notifying you that you can pick them up.

Since the synagogue is not open on a daily basis, the cards are being shipped to Terry

Weiner as all shipments must be signed for. Her contact information is as follows:

E-mail: fundraising@templeadasshalom.org

Phone: (410) 939-3170

Mailing Address: contact the office for this address (for respect of private information)

We are in the process of setting up a separate account for this program as it is

generating quite a bit of activity and we want it to be as seamless as possible.

ShopwithScrip.com generates payments to Temple Adas Shalom on the first Monday of

each month to the temple. All funds come to Temple Adas Shalom; therefore,

bookkeeping needs to calculate your rebate and remit to you. Checks will be generated

to those who ordered in the prior month approximately two weeks after the funds are

All rebates are split between the participant and Temple Adas Shalom 50/50. Some

folks have asked if they can donate their rebate to Temple Adas Shalom and the answer

is a resounding YES!!! For the time being, to help with the tracking of those funds, we

are asking you to send a check for that amount to the temple or to donate through the

Temple Adas Shalom storefront. This will better enable us to track these funds and for

the office administrator to accurately record this in your account. Our hope is to

streamline this process down the road to make it easier for all concerned to help

Temple Adas Shalom grow and prosper.

This program is extraordinary as it helps you, the participant, to purchase gift cards

that you would usually buy elsewhere and earn a little money back for yourself as well

as Temple Adas Shalom. If you haven’t signed up, do yourself a favor and get on board.

This program is going to be a major part of the fundraising effort for our synagogue and

with your participation, we can continue to grow.
