January.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and if you are heading out on holiday - ride
safely. This is a proudly South African family run business and our team thanks all of you

PS: How did the fairy get to the top of the Christmas tree?
She wandered over to Santa who was very grumpy and asked him where he’d like his
Christmas tree.

Swartland MX Track Opens in The
Cape:
The first official event held at the Swartland MX
track, just north of Malmesbury on the N7, was
on Saturday, 6 November 2021.
The track is laid out on a huge, hard-pack hill next
to the Afrisam Rheebok Quarry and has a large
flat section with start straight, jumps and whoops,
and two down and uphill sections – one to the
north (one or two drops and climbs) and the other
on the south side (three drops and climbs) which
also has a series of long loops laid out below,
also with jumps and whoops, before the riders
tackle the final climb back to the top.
An enthusiastic group of 30 riders and supporters
descended on the new track, to experience a day
of riding not available anywhere else in the Cape
area, with its lots of elevation changes. A small
number of 50cc, 65cc and 85cc riders were also
present although the day was dominated by bikes
of 125cc and upwards. That, however, did not
deter the younger riders from giving it their all,
and the fast boys in those classes giving most of
the bigger guys more than they bargained for.
Feedback from some of the pro riders who have
been to the track is that it is definitely the most
technical track they have ridden in the Cape, and
gives an excellent training ground to prepare for
MX events in the rest of the country where most
of the tracks are hard-pack.
The riders who attended were very enthusiastic
about the track and its potential for future events
of this sort.

Fair pricing, excellent workmanship and a friendly
atmosphere are the foundation stones of this long
standing Old School bike shop on the East Rand.
In tough economic times most people are hesitant

dropped a substantial portion of his life savings in
to extending the shop creating more workshop and

We’ve told you about these guys before.. They are
just growing from strength to strength with a couple
of changes along the way. Reece Brown is the man

clockwork. Melissa Visagie will sort out all your
finance needs from finance applications, insurance
needs and the like. Having wandered around the
Vaal Triangle quite a bit of late we are yet to find a

tidy pre-loved bikes and forming part of the Vic

OXFORD RAINSEAL OVER JACKET
AND PANTS
Let’s talk about the weather, this summer has
been an interesting one so far, one day sweltering
hot with the sun trying to grill your skin to pork
crackling and then the next few days cold,
miserable and wet. And if you’re on a bike the
cold and wet get even more miserable. The guys
from DMD have just the thing for that - the Oxford
Rainseal over jacket and pants. Okay, so the wet
weather makes sense, but how do they help in the
cold you might ask. Well, from personal experience
if you pull this lot over your airflow summer gear
it will stop the cold wind getting in and your
summer gear will create a thermal break between
the Rainseal gear and your skin. It might not be
very toasty but it is a lot more comfortable than
chattering teeth and shivering. Simple yet carefully
designed and beautifully made light weight weather
protection.
Rather than guess how much bigger your overs
need to be to fit over your normal riding gear, these
are intelligently sized so that you simply buy YOUR

Hi Tech Mag Repairs
You got a rim you need sorted on your bike, car,
bakkie… they have you covered
If, like so many of us, have managed to mangle
your expensive mag rims on your bike, bakkie,
car, trailer or caravan then you need to keep these
guys number close at hand. So! You all know
about Hitech Mag Repairs, but what we didn’t
know is that they do all sorts of wheel work from
the obvious widening of rims to actually changing
the size of your rim. Especially those weird 16”
and 16.5” rims that nobody seems to make tyres
for… and all the V-Max and old ‘Blade owners
now suddenly sit up and try not to choke on their
tea… Really? YES! Really.
They do rim step ups and step downs and we
would challenge you to spot where they have
worked or what they have done. They also do
polishing, custom colour matching and even
hydro dipping of rims. Many years ago at a
previous employer a staff member managed
to mangle one of our superbike trade ins, the
front rim took such a hard hit that it ended up
in 3 pieces. We sent it into Hitech hoping they
wouldn’t laugh at us too loudly and lo and behold
the rim arrived back in one piece, looking brand
new and perfect round and straight and it worked
a treat when we put it back on the bike. No
challenge seems too big for them… just don’t be
a chop and take them a spoked rim from a Dirt or
Adventure bike… take the hint from their name –
“Hitech Mag Repairs”. We’ll be sending our poor
VW’s wheels in for some TLC soon… Watch this
space.
You can find them at 208 Bosworth St S, Alrode
South, Alberton and can call them on 011 900

Tie downs are a huge source of contention
in any bikers life. If you have a good set they
are sure to go missing if you leave them
unattended. The Keiti ties downs are 40mm
wide and 2 mm thick, making them really heavy
duty with carbine hooks so that they cannot
unhitch themselves and soft loops so they do
not damage your pride and joy.
Keiti Universal licence plate
bracket
The quickest and easiest wat to tidy up the
rear of your bike. Get rid of that ugly OEM
contraption a replace it with this compact,
classy and tidy aluminium unit that easily bolts
on and even has a spot for your indicators.
TrickBits Universal integrated
LED Tail light, indicator and licence plate
lights.
If you’re building a really special custom or just
want to clean up the look of your bike TrickBitz

integrated tail light, indicator and number plate
light jobbies. Not much bigger than a small
cigarette lighter, so you can really tuck them
away and only have them seen when they are
switched on… perfect for clean lines on any
bike yet still bright enough to be legal and safe.
Couple them with the licence plate holder and
you can really tidy up the back of any bike.
TrickBitz Swingarm spools
Billet aluminium and available in a variety of
colours. Great for getting the back of your bike
in the air to clean and lube your chain and for
protecting your swingarm in the event of a spill,
cheaper to replace or repair your swingarm too.
TrickBitz tubeless puncture
repair kits
Get one or two or three… or more, chuck it
under your seat, your top box, the boot of
your car and forget about it. Do it now! And
you will thank us one day. They’re not hugely
expensive and you will be glad you have it with
you one day for sure or sit on the side of the
road waiting for your mates to ride home 1 or 2
hours to fetch a bakkie or car with a trailer then
drive another 1 or2 hours to fetch and then
drive another 2 odd hours to get home… and
you told your Missus that you are going out for
a quick breakfast run for the boys and will be
back in plenty of time for that family lunch… Ja
Né! Try that again next weekend and see what
she has to say. Then you have to load your bike
to get it to the shop to fix it and then go fetch
it again… all could have been avoided with a
quick 10 minute roadside repair… tut, tut, tut.
All of these are imported by trickbitz and are
available at your dealer.

NEXX Helmets Arrive:
We did not know too much about the NEXX
brand until recently. Nexx helmets has been
producing motorcycle helmets since 2001,
in Portugal, and is proud of the fact that it’s
still 100% located in Amoreira da Gândara,
160 miles north of Lisbon. Why? Because
“we believe in having all our knowledge
concentrated; this not only allows us to maintain
our unique philosophy but also, as we develop
and produce our helmets, we know them inside
out and we can support and improve them better
than anyone else. Plus, doing everything inhouse
allows us more flexibility while providing a
higher level of Customization and Service.” Nexx
helmets are now sold in at least 60 countries.
Kyle went along and bought himself the high end
Hill end Carbon Fibre Adventure helmet. Over
the next couple of months he’ll be using it a lot
with a full SA review soon. He’s happy so far –
the helmet is light, comfortable and well vented.
The X.WED2 marries the comfort of a touring
helmet with the ventilation of a dirt helmet. With
double the air inlet ventilation in comparison to
its predecessor, the X.WED2 does everything it
can to keep you cool. At highway speeds, head
checks are more of a breeze because the peak
has been engineered to catch less of the breeze.
A drop down internal sun visor enables a smooth
transition from sunny morning jaunts to dimly-lit
evening excursions.
Features:
• Air channeling peak
• X-MATRIX shell consisting of
multiaxial fiberglass, organic 3D fibers
in Aramid reinforcements, and carbon
fiber
• 3 shell sizes: XS-SM, MD-LG, XL-3XL

Go North Young Man!
The new Norden 901
If ever there was a much anticipated addition
to the adventure market in SA… nay…
globally, it must be Husqvarna’s new Norden
901. It has taken a mere two years to develop
this bike from a concept model at Eicma, to
a bike that we got to ride the other day. And
this, despite the COVID pandemic that has
disrupted so many things. That alone speaks
volumes for the brand.
South Africa was the first country to launch this bike after the
Husqvarna world team hosted their launch a few weeks before. Five
bikes were brought in for Journalists and dealers from around the
country to ride. It was a short ride, but it just kinda whets your appetite
for when the production models arrive towards the end of January.
We all descended on the really, very cool Monate lodge our near
Settlers and Marble Hall. If you are looking for a very cool venue to
spoil your nearest and dearest, host a wedding or whatever, it’s a great
spot!
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 23
Upon arrival, we were whisked off on a game drive for
sundowners at the dam with Hippo’s honking in the
background and crocs lazily catching little yellowfish just
below the dam wall. Ain’t South Africa just such a great
place!
We returned to a braai under the stars where the team from
Husqvarna South Africa unveiled the bikes and gave us a
rundown on what we could expect the following morning.
Fred and Grant ran us through it all with some pretty cool
video presentations. It’s all about Wanderlust. Go North! We
needed to go riding.
Some quick facts:
Norden 901. Predicted retail price R246,000.00 incl.
• Chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame with
engine as stressed member.
• 889cc parallel-twin engine with 105hp peak power
and 100Nm of torque.

settings for street and off-road use (220mm +
215mm wheel travel front and rear).
• Three selectable ride modes (Street, Rain, Offroad)
and optional “Explorer” mode.
• Switchable cornering ABS with Off road mode.
• Height adjustable, two-piece seat.
• Ride-by-wire throttle.
• Quick shifter.
• Cornering-sensitive traction control allows for nine
levels of adjustable rear wheel slip, (in Explorer

• Integrated LED lights and fog lights.

to 400km.

• 204kg dry weight.
• Optional Connectivity Unit provides navigation,

• Wide range of aftermarket accessories. One of the

In a nutshell all of this lot was discussed and dissected in
great detail.

Now it might all sound very similar to another bike in the groups
arsenal and that’s kind of what we expected, but in our opinion,
Husqvarna has carved their own niche in the pack with this new
machine. We love the look, and it’s quite amazing just how close
the finished product is to the concept model that was displayed
a few years back.
The next day we were up with the chickens. It was an early start
because, with only five bikes in the country, the group needed to
be split so that everyone could get a little taste.
The route was a proper treat.
A short section of single spoor tracks through the reserve and
out to the gravel roads around the reserve. A section of tar and
then, back to the reserve onto thick sandy trails to a giant rock
on the property where young Sage Voges took that cool cover
photograph.
From there it was a short, sandy leg back to the lodge where we
started.
Although the circular route was short, it was sufficiently
challenging to give everyone a good idea of the Norden 901’s
capabilities.
Climbing aboard, the bike feels very different to anything
Husqvarna that we have ridden before. It’s pretty clear to
us that they have built a comfortable touring machine with
a comprehensive screen and faring, a comfortable seat and
ergonomics that are suited to just about anyone. It’s a really
comfortable bike that you can happily pop your best friend onto
the back and take off for a dirty weekend. The bike has a small
feel to it. Not overly tall either, no idea which setting our seat was
on, but there were times in the sand when we were grateful that
we could paddle along and stay upright.
We are familiar with the power plant and it is a great choice for
a bike like this. Really nippy with great torque and power that is
not intimidating. It’s a bike that is really easy to ride and the 3
rider modes are simple to select. Off-road mode disengages the
traction control, so that was the order of the day for the route
through the reserve and onto the gravel.
When we hit the tar, road mode engaged, the bike easily ran up
to speeds close to the 200KPH mark and getting there was a lot
of fun. The engine pulls really well for a bike in this class. There
is an extra rain mode which makes the bike easier in slippery,
wet conditions, but… hey… it was not raining, so we didn’t get
to try it. Brakes, handling and suspension on the road are great,
it’s a comfortable, peppy fun bike to ride. The kind of bike that
you will happily ride every day and then take off on for that EPIC
long trip.
Pretty soon we hit the sandy gravel roads back into the reserve,
the loose sand and rutted surface was fun. We did fiddle a
bit, but in this terrain, you need to set the suspension and air
pressures up to your own preference. WP gives you that option
without a whole lot of fuss. Chat to your dealer.
The routes through the reserve were simply fantastic. Not quite
where most would venture on their bigger adventure machines,
but single spoor, sandy trails, open grasslands and a great big
rock to explore, all the while watching out that an angry buffalo
does not decide to stroll across the trail. The Norden easily
lapped it all up and made many of the riders actually look quite
good! It’s a very nimble, capable bike and you can really feel
Husqvarna’s off-road DNA shining through.
Go and visit Monate Lodge.
Its great
At The Rock, as usually happens, the jumps started getting
bigger and the riders got braver and braver… it’s all about the
bench racing afterwards you see. The second wave of riders
needed a turn, so we reluctantly pointed North, with a detour
past the lions through the thick sand and handed the bikes over
to the next lot. A quick, challenging 50km odd flip that gave a
really impressive impression (is that a decent sentence?) for the
new bike.
26 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
The Norden handled it all with much finesse. It’s a great addition
for the brand. We cannot wait for the new bikes to arrive and
we’ll take off on a proper long distance adventure tour.
Kyle says
First impression:
Absolutely stunning. It will take time for me to get used to the
looks. Very old school and modern at the same time. Big round
light with the modern touch of fog lights. Fine details like the seat
graphics as well as the graphics on the shrouds showing contour
lines just like the concept drawing. The seat has two different
finishes, leather and suede. The display is very functional and
can be changed to 3 different themes. The theme I enjoyed was
the most simple theme which shows which gear you are in and a
rev counter and a simple speedo.

Ride impressions:
Straight off the bat the ergonomics are fantastic. Comfortable
seat offering a lovely seated riding position. Standing you also
find yourself not laying over the bike but rather standing upright
in a more natural posture. The bike feels light and nimble and
doesn’t not tall at all. Even with the seat set high, I could still put
a foot down comfortably. The bike does not feel heavy at all. It
is well balanced with the Rally kind of tank giving a low center of
gravity.
Pulling off, the bike feels relaxed, not race focused. The power
feels great with a very linear curve to it. The bike I was riding had
an Akrapovic pipe on it and that gave the bike a little more peak
near the top of the power curve. Very responsive throttle that
changes according to the different user modes.
The bike is fitted with a quick shifter, it is very, very smooth and
works really well whether you are banging it or cruising slowly
along. No false neutrals even with boots on.
The suspension offers a smooth and soft ride. It is comfortable
and plush. It can be adjusted front and rear and you can feel it
straight away. Adjusting the clickers does make a difference.
I would like to do a long trip and take it through tight twisting
roads.
The brakes are really good, not Brembo or Braktec, they are
branded Husqvarna and I must say they work really well. The
feedback through the levers is very positive. You know exactly
what is happening. The rear brakes are sharp. So sharp that I
stalled a few times locking up.
Overall:
This bike is more relaxed than its 890 cousin and it is welcomed
with arms wide open. I enjoyed riding and would like to take a
much longer route and time in The saddle. The wait has been
worth it. Stunning bike and comfortable to ride. The power is just
what you expect and provides a good exciting ride.
In the meantime, these bikes are at your Husqvarna dealer just
begging to be ridden.
Go and book yourself a test ride.

THE 2021
HONDAQUEST
Honda Quest 2021 is a wrap.
Thedusthassettled –theridersallarrived
safelybacktoahero’swelcome –andthe
winnersreceivedtheirAfricaTwins.Yes –
readthatagain!Thewinnerskepttheirbikes.
How flippen cool is that?
We were invited along to chat to the guys
upon their return at the beautoful kaleo
lodge near Ceres – and although, we
are kind of used to stuff like this, we are
always impressed by the raw emotion
displayed by the competitors. Ita a great
event – life changing as many of them tell
us as tears flow freely. Honda SA is on to a
great thing for sure.
How it all works:
Honda Quest is not a race, neither is it a
rally. It is simply a chance to be able to
compete with a teammate on one of the
worlds greatest adventure rides. We know
this because we rode parts of the route
when Honda launched their little CRF 250
L Rally a few years ago in the Richtersveld,
Namakwa Eco Trail, Tankwa Karoo and
Cederberg.
This event does not happen with 250’s
but rather on the very latest Africa Twin
1100 DCT’s. The main aim of Quest is to
test human endurance and adaptability,
combined with the continent-crossing
abilities of the Honda Africa Twin CRF1100.
Boot camps are held at centres all around
SA where 14 riders were selected to take
part in the main event.
Great care was then taken taken to pair
Honda Quest finalists into teams of two so
that they complement each other in this
competitive environment. Every morning,
someone was presented with a large
wooden spoon – an honour to win it as it’s
the “Spirit of Quest” according to the other
riders.
The other, a clown tie is a fun one, given
for doing something silly or embarrassing.

Day 1: A reasonably short stage of 130km. Just enough to
settle the nerves.
The stop for the day was a fly-camping space alongside the
Orange River, nestled amongst the many shaded mountains
besides an ancient Melkboom tree.
For many, this was first experience of extreme desert
adventuring on big dual sports. The Richtersveld with its stark,
sharp contrasts was at it’s very best. The tricky sandy and
sometimes silty trails were firm and not so treacherous.
Some serious competitive juices came to the fore once at camp
with a late afternoon bisley with catapult and short game of
cricket on the river bank. Team #7’s Ruan Ueckermann found
it hard hide his provincial cricketing pedigree. Honda Quest is
not just about the riding, it’s a time to be enriched. To this end,
one of the exercises is to present on topics home prepared that
relate in ways to the world we will be travelling through.
Murray Campbell, a lifelong Honda fan, spoke enthusiastically
on the life and times of Soichiro Honda, the man for whom
without which, we wouldn’t be doing this!
Andrew de Bruin, Murray’s partner was next with an insight into
just what lay around us, his topic was The Richtersveld.
The evening was spent under the stars with the guys taking
turns at guard duty around the camp fire.
Day 2: The Richtersveld Eco Trail.
A winding track that comes and goes from the river to the
mountains and back and, starts innocently enough, but then
threads its way through such challenges as Hell’s Cradle; a
scorching canyon of river sand. Also, Split Pass; a double
option climb, all the while whilst being surrounded by iconic
post card vistas. It really is hard to take it all in.
The teams set off in small co-horts of 2 or 3 pairs, taking turns
to navigate, make key decisions and decide the pace.
To have any chance of winning, you’ve had to have fun,
learn and help and make it your job to help others do so too.
The temperatures started to soar along with the sweat. As
with any serious off-roading, the groups experienced a few
punctures and tumbles that slowed the pace, such that when
the teams all joined up at Hells Cradle it was just past midday.
Hells Cradle is a high sided, 3km long canyon with seriously
deep sand. The heat bounces off the steep walls.

As if this wasn’t intimidating enough,
into this fun challenge a competitive
element is added. A snaking route is
plotted that all had to navigate for points.
It’s not at all easy and, made all the
more challenging by the fact that each
successive rider leaves a deeper mark
more difficult for next. The competitors
drew their start order out of a hat. The
cheers for those with low numbers,
turned to groans when the starting order
was reversed!
With the sun low just off the mountains,
the guys rolled into Oewerbos River
Camp to sort out the day’s adventures.
It had been a staunch, full, tough fun
day. Along with the previous evenings
interrupted sleep, there was no late-night
banter…
Day 3:
After a good nights kip, it was a very
keen group who took on their next task.
Navigation was all old school, maps and
compass. Today, the pairs had some
core decisions to make;
“There are two routes. Only one map per
pair. Only one member per route. The
better sand rider is highly suggested
to take the right-hand route. Here’s the
map. They set off at 8am sharp.” That
was it!
Many assumed that one route was
harder than the other, when in fact both
routes were tough for their own reasons;
one had a LOT of sand, the other very
steep, loose technical climbs.
Solving the lack of maps puzzle also
required some strategic bargaining with
other teams.
The teams split up just 7km from the
start and wouldn’t see each other again
till much later.
The Hammerkop route was 30km of
seldom-travelled riverbed and jeep tracks
wedged tight in-between the mountains
of the Nababieb Nature Reserve. The
entrance to this piece of riding heaven
though, is guarded by a near impassable
silty fesh-fesh section that took an hour
to dig out the logistics landcruiser.
Hellskloof’s starts off as an innocent
looking side track to the main gravel
road to Eksteenfontein. It soon became a
hardcore scramble up what could better
be described as a 4km rough path up a
series of waterfalls.
Reuniting with their partners much later
in the afternoon, there were many laughs
and stories of the sweat and fun. Not
everyone escaped unscathed however,
there were some who made it back to
camp walking a bit funny …
Back at the camp for the second night

alongside the river, Hein Kumm
hauled out a canoe to use as prop for
his presentation on the Orange river.
His partner Hugo Minnaar took us on
a fact filled journey about the African
Rift valley.
Day 4:
Honda Quests first casualty, Team
#1’s Murray Campbell had an injured
ankle. He and Andrew de Bruin were
offered the choice to:
Pop Murray in the vehicle for one
day’s grace, join for the rest and
accept whatever points Andrew
earns for the team for the day as their
average.
Or, ride the day. If Murray went out,
Andrew had to join him.
They chose to rest Murray.
Soon after setting off from
Oewerbos heading South through
the Richtersveld mountains, in a
beautiful spot, there is an unusual
place the rough gravel road passes,
called Stone Piles. Over the years,
many thousands of piles of balancing
stones have been raised by travellers
who had memories to honour or
troubles to shed. The group were
asked to think about this ritual and in
a collective fashion build their own.
Not so unexpectedly, it was deeply
moving.
Just 30km later, through sandy and
stony jeep tracks amongst a pallet
of colourful desert shades, lies the
Red Staircase. It takes some skill
and commitment to clear. In previous
Quests, this climb has proven to be
something of test for the riders. This
year, despite 3 tumbles and some
near misses, the teams all made it up
within the time limits.
36 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021

The spirit of the true adventurer was emerging.
The back roads to Springbok, were an opportunity to open
up a little. The flowing tracks have a mix of hardpack that
suddenly switches to deep 2 track sand to catch the unwary.
The evenings camp was in Modderfontein .Jaco
Swiegelaar’s presentation was on the land we were traveling
through – Namakwaland.
Elio Striglia had Thomas Bain, the unbelievably productive
roads and passes engineer who’s efforts litter our more
iconic spaces… What a day!
Day 5:
Murray joined his partner, a little worse for wear, but raring
to go.
The days climb was a monster. More suited to an enduro
bike, few would consider this on an adventure bike. It was
literally the first thing on the menu less that 20km from the
chilly evenings camp. It’s a long, very steep, rutted, slippery
test of ones courage and skill.
Hardy de Kock, Owner of Specialised Adventures who
hosted the event, raised his concerns about Devils Run. The
recent rains had cut deep into the trail making it even more
threatening.
His 3 instructors though, have final say on riding decisions
and leaving this up to them, Jaco du Plessis the lead
instructor who is a man of few words said, “Yes, there is
much to lose here, but “Dream no small dreams, for they stir
not the hearts of men””.
Hardy was left to work on his stress levels while the teams
got on with it.
2 riders had a clean run. The others had varying degrees of
success. That hill counted!
Despite the many falls, the rugged design of the bikes
showed no sign of the ordeal. Everyone was praising the
DCT for being able to accomplish the task; Less controls to
operate, constant torque and never the wrong gear.
The Northern Cape is laced with wonderful riding. As if to
reward the sweating and swearing, the rest of the day was
the very best type of adventure riding; weaving trails through
small paths that meander South.
Unfortunately, in an open, easy, dusty riverbed, Hein Kumm,
a gentle giant of a man and one of the only 2 to ace Devils
Run, smashed a hidden boulder with his foot. He made it
through to camp in Kamieskroon in good spirits.
Under the stars, Tom Steward gave a fascinating discussion
on the Quiver Tree Pieter Siegling – spoke on the Cedarberg.
The long tough day of 191km’s wasn’t finished yet. The
group departed on a 60km night ride… only returning at
9h45… a long day in the saddle.
Day 6:
Voltarin is your friend. Hein took a few and was back on
the bike for a shorter but tricky day of navigation. There are
stunning, hardly used backroad tracks that connect little
used communities such as Twee-Riviere, Kheis, Karas and
the Lankloof valley.
Honda Quest’s focus is on the journey, the dream, the true
Adventurer. It’s far bigger than the individual. Inspired by
this small-town journey, a challenge for the contestants is
to suggest a humanitarian project they want to implement
in their home places. The winner, voted by all crew and
contestants will receive funding from the group as a whole.
They will have their helmet time on tomorrows ride to put
that together.
Tonight, we sleep in one of these miniscule communities
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 37

called Uitspan. Just outside the few
houses that make up the place is a field
with small junior school. It’s just a tiny
hall with a small stage and out houses.
Perfect!
Dave Gouws took the stage to present
on the Inca’s. Heindri Visser followed him
with the Kruger National Park.
Later in the evening, the contestants
watched all their videos up until Day 5.
None of them had seen any of them yet.
Another amazing day in the saddle.
Day 7:
The longest run homeward bound,
397km almost entirely off-road. After
the long, tough days, no-one was fresh.
Everyone was carrying some form of
wear and tear, some more than others.
However, the teams have acquired skills,
forged friendships and settled into a
rhythm.
We had numerous front punctures
though. It’s a function of the tough routes
and standard tubes. The tubes can cope
with every day running, but to be fair,
they’ve been asked a little more than just
“everyday running”!
From Uitspan’s little school house,
we stopped off at a giant Quiver Tree
Forest, the first of many. We saw some
particularly fine specimens.
For large sections where the navigation
was easy the pace was quick. Over the
Knersvlakte with its massive skies and
Boesmanlands’ wide-open roads, the
group made great time.
There were few breaks to stretch the
legs, a stroll around the interesting Fred
Turner Windmill Museum, a cooldrink at
the Ganaga Lodge with its magnificent
views over the Ganaga Mountains and
Pass.
That’s how most of the marathon
day went, navigating and reeling off
the kilometres. The finish line was
approaching…
Unfortunately, there were two tumbles
towards the end of the day, Shaun
Engelbrecht suffered a puncture at speed
on a gravel corner and if it had not been
for his armoured pressure suit and skills
aquired during Quest, he’d probably
be in hospital. He escaped with not a
scratch. His bike too, showed no signs of
the accident.
Peter Loubser, one of the instructors, hit
a deep rut in thick dust, instantly bringing
him down. Though he still made it to
camp, he was much the worse for wear
– a serious sprain but luckily nothing
suspected broken.
Itthe night was spent in Perdekloof in the
Tankwa Karoo under the stars.
Day 8:
For the penultimate day, the morning
was cloudless and warm.
At the briefing, Hardy let the teams know
that there was almost nothing between
the top teams - with everything to lose.
All 7 teams this year were very strong.
The days route started as soon as we
left Perdekloof with a tough navigation
exercise. The Tankwa Karoo National
Park is littered with trails, the ones we
travelled on were vague and little used.
Dark shale fields between weathered
red hued sedentary mountains with
the pastel blue Cederberg Mountains
beckoning riders to join them off in the
distance. In this harsh world, an Ostrich
and Gemsbok raced across our path to
add to the occasion. Too cool!
In the Biedouw valley, the Doring River
was in flood. Considering that we’d
just come through the furnaced shales
of Tankwa Karoo, it was a bit surreal
wading into the refreshing river not 40
minutes later, floating a bike across with
a homemade pontoon just enough to
carry one bike.
This was an exercise in teamwork. At
this late stage, sinking a bike would be a
disaster….
The Cedarberg was a craggy, rough,
eminently picturesque backdrop for the
final stretch to camp. The mood was high
and despite a few more punctures, riding
into camp was high with accomplishment
- and a little sad that this would be the
last evening together.
Day 9 saw the guys making their way
back to the start. Our lot was waiting for
them at the finish at Kaleo lodge when
we heard that punctured had interrupted
the final leg home.
Eventually, we were greeted by the noise
of 20 or so Africa Twins roaring up the
driveway and onto the Verhanda to a
hearty welcome from the assembled
guests.
The emotions were high as the guys
landed.
And then.
Silence. The realization that the event
had drawn to a close.
The guys from Specialised Adventures
has a short chat congratulating the
competitors – and the winners were
announced to thunderous applause.
Congratulations to the deserved winners
of Honda Quest 2021, Ruan Ueckermann
& Neil Rieck!
What a ride! What a prize! What a cool

THE SECOND
TRAX AND TRAIL FUNDURO…
This event is going to become a regular feature on Gautengs
riding schedule. Delayed thanks to COVID restrictions, the second
Trax And Trail only happened a couple of weeks ago – and
the turnout was phenomenal with organisers having to turn late
entries away.
It was a great day, with participants trying to get in as many laps
as possible. Not a race – a Funduro. Not a bike breaker – a short
lap all rideable with a few little stings in the tail on the pink, more
technical routes. Bikes of all shapes, brands and sizes were
there – and it was so cool to see most brands represented.
Prizes were awarded for the teams that put in the most laps,
individual ladies and gents for the same. Loads of fun prizes and
trophies made by the Adventure Company were handed to the
battlers, the crashers and anyone who did something doff on the
day.
The marshals from Trax Moto made sure that nobody was left
out there – there were always willing hands to:
A- get the photo. B- have a good laugh. C- help the riders up
and get them on their way.
A great day out in the sunshine for sure.

back in SA.
TGB. Taiwan Golden Bee is a Taiwanese manufacturer
of Quads. We’ve seen the brand around before and
they have always been good quality machines. There is
a new importer – ETG logistics who are very involved
in the agricultural industry and they have brought in
two models. They invited our lot out for a ride at the
famous Gerotek test facility.
Taiwan Golden Bee (TGB) has been around since 1978, building all-terrain vehicles (ATVs),
scooters, engines, and related components such as continuously variable transmissions
and electric power steering. TGB also supplies engines and other components to
numerous ATV and scooter brands and export their own products to more than 40
countries.
Models available:
Two models are available, namely the TGB Blade 600 SE.X EPS 4x4 aimed primarily at
recreational users and the TGB Blade 600 AR EPS 4x4 which is expected to appeal to
agricultural and other commercial users like the mining industry.
The TGB Blade 600 SE.X EPS 4x4 ATV is a sports-style ATV that offers many uses as a
day-to-day work tool or purely for leisure and recreational use. The sports styling results
in a streamlined body design with a narrow rider seating position. The quad includes LED
front lights, LED strip indicators, pillion seat, complete with backrest.
The TGB Blade 600 AR EPS 4x4 model is designed as a workhorse. It features a tipper,
drop-side configuration load tray that can take up to 200kg’s of equipment. Given its
workhorse nature, the rear suspension of the TGB Blade 600 AR has been beefed up when
compared to its recreational stablemate.

Both models are powered by a single cylinder, 561cc, 4-stroke
engine with electronic fuel injection (EFI) and produce 33.4kW of
power at 6,500 r/min and 46.5Nm of torque at 5,500 r/min.
Drive to the wheels comes through a drive shaft connected to
a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). The Blades offer
selectable 2wd and 4wd traction with an electrically activated
front differential lock for the tougher stuff. Both are fitted with
chunky Kenda all-terrain 6-ply tyres on 12-inch matt black
aluminium rims. 320mm of ground clearance.
Weighing in at 450kg wet weight, the TGB Blade 600 SE.X EPS
4x4 is capable, they say of 80km/h… we got 93 on the clock.
The more agricultural TGB Blade 600 AR EPS 4x4 tops out at
just over 70km/h.
Suspension travel of 220mm in the front and 240mm in the rear
with double A-arm fully independent suspension on all four
corners and an anti-roll bar in the rear. The suspension can be
fine-tuned for individual riding styles and/or load carrying.
Both quads come with Electric Power Steering (EPS). The Tri-
Mode Speed Sensitive Electric Power Steering senses the ATV’s
speed to provide varying levels of assist. Riders can select their
required level – from no assist to minimum assist for trail riding
and maximum assist for low-speed riding in rough or muddy
terrain. Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes bring things to a
stop. A 1360kg capacity Warn winch is mounted to the front of
both ATV’s and both have tow hitches as standard.
The TGB Blade 600 SE.X EPS is equipped with composite loadcarrying
racks with capacities of 30kg front and 50kg rear. Both
are fitted with multi-function LCD screens that offer numerous
functions such as digital tachometer, digital speedometer,
maximum engine speed, maximum speed, average speed, total
odometer distance, daily odometer, fuel gauge, clock and EPS
setting. Surrounding the display are easy-to-read indicators for
transmission position, high temp, low battery, high beam, low oil
pressure, check engine, 2wd/4wd and differential lock indicator.

Ride impressions:
Gerotek is cool for a story like this – we were pointed in the
direction of the concrete hills, into the sandy test track and
then onto the drag strip. From there it was the very cool 4x4
track where we put the quads through their paces in “real
world” terrain. It’s been a long time since a launch like this has
happened – and our lot were very impressed by the quads.
They made mincemeat of the 27 degree climbs – even in 2wd
with a bit of a run up. Towards the top of the climbs the power
tapers off, but we did not experience any slipping belts or similar.
4wd low range and high range – as expected was really easy.
The adaptive EPS is something cool, and whether you ride with
it engaged or not, the quads handle great. Completely switched
off, the steering is quite heavy – so just leave it on.
They buried the bikes in the sandpit and asked us to climb out,
both quads performed admirably… We even buried one further
and proceeded to drag it out with the standard winch. It’s a cool
feature. You’ll need to try hard to get properly stuck!
On the top end runs, the quads feel solid and stable – and they
are quick. We’d probably govern them if we were to hand one to
a farm worker.
The four wheel drive track was – well easy. The Agricultural unit
is like a big couch – less sporty – and even with the big bin out
back, it’s quite nimble and easy to maneuver. But the sporty one
was a lot more fun… Big traction, soft, forgiving suspension and
excellent ground clearance.
They do exactly what they are meant to with a quality feel.

SA NATIONAL MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONS
CROWNED IN PRETORIA.
by Motorsport Media.
What? South African National Motocross Finals Report
Where? Legends MX Track - Rayton Pretoria
When? Saturday 20 November 2021
2021 proved to be a challenging SA Motocross year as
lockdown, once again caused the calendar to adapt
thoughout the season.
Despite this, SA’s finest put on a stellar show throughout, with
most teams and riders already flat out in preparation for the 2022
season.
All eight Cannabis Energy Drink and TRP Distributors South
African National motocross champions mentioned below remain
subject to MSA ratification.
Purdon does the double as MX titles come to a head at Rhino
Park.
Red Bull KTM hero Tristan Purdon romped to a back-to-back
MX1 title with yet another premier class double over teammate
and closest title rival Cameron Durow. David Goosen clinched
the third step for 2021 for Rockstar Racing Husqvarna.
The Goose came in tie on points for third for the day with
Yamaha’s Jesse Wright as they shared out the third and fourth
places. Jayden Proctor’s KTM, Arnu Saaiman on a Honda and
Johan Vogelesang’s KTM were next home.
Cameron Durow did the 250cc MX2 double, but all teammate
Tristan Purdon had to do was follow him home to take his
second ‘21 title. He did exactly that.
David Goosen took third in both races for the day, to
end third in the title chase behind Durow, with KTM
duo Leonard du Toit and Jayden Proctor following
after a day-long duel with Cross Country refugee Davin
Cocker’s Husqvarna.
Husqvarna rider Grant Frerichs wrapped up the MX3
title with a double win over Ian Topliss’ Yamaha, and
the Hondas of Bruce Viljoen and Philip Harper.
Kayla Raaff rode her Kawasaki to another South African
Ladies Motocross title with a double win over KTM
gal Leah Heygate. The de Lima sisters, Jadene and
Cheyenne were next up on their Husqvarnas.
Jonathan Mlimi put the finishing touches to another
SA High School 125 cc Motocross championship with
another double win on his Red Bull KTM. Miguel de
Waal’s KTM was second in both motos. Husqvarna
rider Luke Grundy and Out of Africa Monster Energy
Yamaha lad Ethan Hoffman shared out the thirds and
fourths ahead of Callan Broskie’s Husqvarna and Blake
Young and Bryce Petersen’s KTMs.
In perhaps the most exciting Cannabis Energy TRP
SA Motocross title fight of the year, Emmanuel
Bako completed a remarkable come-from-behind
championship win with double 85 cc Pro Mini victories
over Neil van der Vyver and Ryan Adler in a Husqvarna
1-2-3.
Championship leader Trey Cox’s Red Bull KTM tied for
fourth with Jordan van Wyk on another Husqvarna on
the day, ahead of Cobus Bester.
KTM kid Matthew Correia played it safe en route to his
85 cc Junior title.
He simply followed Tyler Petersen’s Husqvarna home to
second in each race. Tyla Sheppard emerged a surprise
third in the small-wheel 85 cc class ahead of regular
frontrunners Andrew Venter’s KTM, Caden Weise on a
Husqvarna and KTM mounted Kassim Hassim.
Aiden Henley’s Out of Africa Monster Energy Yamaha
was unstoppable en route to a double 65cc motocross
win over title contender Blake Frost’s KTM and
Husqvarna lad Sven Larsen.
None of that was enough to prevent Blade Tilley’s
GasGas from scraping home to take the title with fourth
on the day. He fought off Chris Brindley and Nicol
Smit’s Husqvarnas for those vital points.
A win and a third en route to second on the day behind
Rayden Woolls’ GasGas, was enough for Trenton
Kretzmann to wrap up the baby 50cc motocross title.
Yamaha lad Cassie van Zyl held Aiden Retief’s KTM
off for third ahead of Lou Rademayer’s Husqvarna and
Hendrico Barwise on a Gas Gas. James Riley was next
up ahead of Kaylin Oosthuizen’s KTM.
Finals:
Tristan Purdon was the star of the day as he wrapped up both
the MX1 and MX2 senior motocross titles at Rhino Park near
Pretoria.
Grant Frerichs won the MX3 title.
Kayla Raaf is the ’21 SA Ladies champ .
Joshua Mlimi is the High School champion.
Emmanuel Bako, Matthew Correia, Blade Tilley and Trenton
Kretzman took the four Junior SA MX titles after some very fierce
battles through the year.

Round9
It’s been a great
year!
The penultimate round for 2021, round 9 was held
at Smoking Pistons on the 7th of November 2021
with a brilliant turn out of riders, support crew and
spectators on a hot and windy Sunday south of
Jo’burg.
Smoking Pistons is the only track of the five in the
series that offers a ’start gate’ system which proved
a little bit challenging for the new riders who had
never experienced this type of start.
As is common with all sports at this time of the
year, the rider numbers dwindled a bit in the more
senior classes with a lot of the youngsters having
to study for year-end exams and the like, however
the Yamaha Pee-Wee class does seem to be on the
increase in numbers.
And these little guys and girls are a real treat to
watch, full of ‘Gees’ and zero fear and they all
encourage each other from the side lines when they
are not racing. We think the future of MX racing is in
good hands and is going to be even more exciting.
As usual, there was an awesome and festive
vibe throughout the pits and the riders were as
enthusiastic as ever.
The final round of 2021 will take place at the Chestnut
hill junior track on the 25th of November 2021 where
the faster riders will be graduated to the Inland MX
Championship for 2022.

Motokids 2021
wrap up…
What is Moto Kids?
Moto Kids was launched in 2015 and is a Fun Race Series
that exists for novice and amateur kids as a stepping
stone before Club and Regional Racing. It is for developing
junior motorcycle riders and is the breeding ground for
the future generation of two wheeled enthusiasts. We
provide a platform that makes motorcycle riding fun and
gives youngsters a way to socially enjoy themselves before
deciding on the next step of riding or racing. Strictly for
novices and newcomers to the sport, MotoKids does not
cater for experienced riders, therefore riders who have
competed at any competitive organised events can only
enter Moto Kids if they finished in the bottom 20% of the
field.
The grass roots development program for 2021 was thrown
upside down again with another year of Covid19 to deal with.
Six ‘fun races’ were scheduled but only four materialized.
The unknowns and variables with all the various lockdowns
and protocols made it difficult for kids and parents alike. The
attendances allowed at outdoors events confused all and
sundry and made it even more difficult to coach or train the
young brains. The kids missed their mates and wanted that
riding connection re-established. Social distancing is an alien
concept for youngsters. The wearing of a mask even more of a
hassle. The best way was just to get everyone inside a helmet
and the world became a familiar place. The happy place we offroad
riders/racers know.
The rules of the mad crazy world don’t apply once we don
helmets and head into our ‘office’ for some fun work. The group
training dates had to be flexible as the ‘fun’ races dates kept
changing in the calendar. The program adopted a ‘fun’ and
‘training’ approach at the ‘race events’. Two motocross heats
and an enduro race were still high up on ‘fun race’ approach. It
was less rigorous and competitive as in previous years.
The competitive and experienced kids from the previous five
years were encouraged to participate in regional or National
motocross events or Cross Country racing.
The grassroots incubator had done its job and the experienced
fledglings of the past five years were made to go explore bigger
horizons with new coaches and managers. The program aimed
to attract more fresh rookies from any age. Some came before
they turned four.
Although this pandemic did not help grow our numbers like we
had experienced in previous years. The new kids and some of
last year’s rookies still had a great time training and doing the
‘fun’ races and other activities the organizers had in store.
Relay races, with different elements (tasks) were coupled with
parents also participating in them. The kids enjoyed these
social races with their parents. The ‘fun race’ day’s events also
had, one on one coaching with various coaches and physical
trainers. The days programs at Legends MX Facility was held
three times and ended with a trail outride for kids who still had
fuel in their young tanks.
The last event of the year at Cullinan had David Goosen and
Neil van der Vyfer , the multiple National motocross champions
come visit with the kids and hosted a Q&A session as well as a
photograph session.
The gift packs with signed cards made for future dreams. The
event at ADA,the Training & Outdoor Centre in October had no
motocross track but rather a cross country and a forest hare
scramble course near Hartebeespoort.
Adventure bike training courses are done there. It was different
but very enjoyable. The venue is superb with its various
adventure bike segments of training. The kids were tested in
thick sand, steep gradients, off camber riding, berm training,
and some fast flat sections that were safe. The facility is green,
with lush lawns, excellent ablutions and a coffee shop.
The new format is in its infancy and will need more time to get
back to the numbers we had previously.
Thank you Motorsport SA, Department of Sports Recreation,
Art and Culture, MXSA and all the associate sponsors.( too
many to list)
Roll on 2022.

ADVERTORIAL
Cape Town Rider
“Rocket” Ryan Gulliver…
Three 65cc Enduro & Off-road Titles for 2021 for this young,
bright new talent from the Cape and only 4 years into his
racing career. This is a youngster to keep an eye on and his
parents are justifiably proud of him and sent us this write
up…
2018 Racing season - Ryan aged 6 – 7
Ryan entered his 1st race and competed in the Western Cape
Off-Road Club (WCOC) event at the age of 6 in 2017 on his
KTM Mini Adventure and participated at entry level. However,
we already noticed his hunger at that young age to be standing
on the podium as he is a very competitive child by nature. Dad
and Ryan decided there and then to enter almost every Funduro
event and to use the opportunity as a training session. Loads
of hard work and dedication started at this point! In 2018 Ryan
had a fantastic 1st full season of Off-Road racing and finished
3rd overall in the 2018 50cc Junior Club championship with the
WCOC competing as one of the youngest competitors in these
events he made quite a memorable and exciting entrance in the
racing community.
2019 Racing season - Ryan aged 7 - 8
Ryan finished 2nd overall in the 2019 - 50cc Junior Club
championship in the WCOC where he also participated in 1 or
2 events racing both 50cc and 65cc classes on the days that
the classes did not compete at the same time. Ryan also tried
out Motocross in 2019 and entered in the 50cc Newbie Class
at Zone 7 where he knocked everyone’s socks off with a few
1st place podiums (This is a non-championship class for new
MX riders). Ryan then also decided to try out his skills at Enduro
and entered 2 of the CSMX Enduro events in 2019 which he
thoroughly enjoyed and he was hooked! and very eager to
start training with the top enduro Coach Graham Hedgcock to
compete in the full enduro season in 2020.
2020 Racing season - Ryan aged 8-9
Ryan finished 2nd overall in the 2020 65cc Junior
Championship in the WCOC. It was quite an eventful year filled
with so much uncertainty and no racing for a few months.
Then racing commenced and all of it got crammed into the
last few months of the year to make it a season! It was not the
championship position he aimed and worked very hard for, but
he finished with a satisfying season and committed that the #1
spot will be his to claim in the near future. Motocross 2020 -
Cycle Technology ccT/A
He moved up to compete in the 50cc Pro
Class and we hoped to be able to attend
a few of the National events, however we
were unable to compete and travel under
COVID19 regulations and the Enduro and
Off-Road events took preference over the
motocross as that is where his passion
lies. He has also proven to be strong & fit
enough to enter both the 50cc Pro Class
and 65cc Class at the motocross events.
Rocket Ryan had a phenomenal season
with the CSMX Enduro 2020 championship
where he exceeded all our expectations
and won the 65cc Championship! This was
his 1st year of competing in the CSMX
Enduro championship for a full season. He
trained non-stop with Coach Graham to
assist him to be able to handle the tough
obstacles he would be facing on the track.
Enduro was definitely his biggest challenge
as he only weighed 28kg and his bike
has been lowered as much as possible to
accommodate his small size.
2021 Racing season - Ryan aged 9-10
What a dream year!!
2021 65cc Enduro SA Champion
(IPC)
2021 65cc CSMX Enduro
Champion
2021 65cc WCOC Off-Road Champion
It was a cram-packed year with travelling
to Nationals, 3 disciplines to compete in
& yes … COVID & SCHOOL. Ryan had
a tough year with many new challenges.
He had his 1st serious accident at an
afternoon of fun training & was hospitalised
for his 1st time. This did not stop him from
accomplishing his goals, however we were
extremely concerned that it would mentally
put a damper on his riding abilities. Boy did
he prove us wrong! He didn’t have much
practice before the final National Enduro
in Creighton yet he smashed it! He fell out
on the track, got stuck under his bike & the
fuel ran into his boot. It was a scorching
hot day! The fuel was burning his foot,
yet he pushed on and managed an extra
victory lap over his other 65cc competitors,
which was the cherry on top for the season
finale! It was a year of racing that we will
never forget! We also got Ryan a KTM 85cc
this year that we lowered it to the max to
accommodate the tiny 9 year old weighing
in at only 30kg.
Nithrone even cut the seat so it could be
even lower for him to reach the ground.
Training on the 85cc started & he loves
being able to challenge himself with new
obstacles.

RAD Moto’s KTM 1290 Rallye…
It’s a Sunday morning. We wake up
to the earth trembling through the
floorboards and a roar outside our
window. Baseball bat out we stumble out
to discover that Rob Gibbon has rolled in
for a cup of coffee… On his custom built
KTM 1290 Super Adv RR Rallye.
Well we forgave him. How can you be
cross when a bike like this rolls in?
We served the coffee and headed out
for a ride. What a cool bike – something
very unusual. It’s been a 6 week project
of non-stop graft – and there is still a bit
to do.
Here are the bones.
The bike was once a standard 2019
KTM 1290 ADV. Miguel and Rob are very
into the whole Advenduro scene – you’ll
have seen the RAD 690 and 500 that
we have featured in the magazine. This
time round – they wanted to something
different – a big-bore rally that would
easily accommodate a pillion.
Rob purchased used KTM 1290. Rad
supplied a crashed bike with a broken
frame. That bike was stripped down to
nothing. The guys from RAD used that
frame to design templates for all of the
new ideas that they had.
They wanted to fit a 450 Rallye tower.
They wanted to update the tailpiece –
and most importantly, they wanted it to
look factory made.
Having the old frame gave them the
ground to make mistakes without fear of
any permanent damage.
Once they were happy with the moulding
process, the good frame was brought
in and the build started. A nut and bolt
build, from the ground up.
The brackets and so-on developed
on the original frame were sent out for
engineering and fabrication by the same
60 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
guys who makes the Wheelie Pro… so
it’s all in the motorcycle family.
Rob headed home and started with new
carbon fibre panels and parts for the
bike.
In his garage, he made new sub-frame
mounts, a tail tidy, bash plate and
various other bits and bobs that litter the
bike. The original tower mount comes off
his 2016 450 RFR and incorporates two
cable charging ports.
Cosmetics are only a small part of the
deal. The guys wanted to shave off as
much weight as was physically possible
– without compromising the bikes
inherent strength. They are still busy with
it – but they reckon that to date, they
have shaved a good 30KG’s odd off the
original bike. We’ll confirm this at a later
date when the bike has been completed.
To lose weight – the front faring and
headlight are gone. The standard
exhaust system is modified, the Cat is
removed and a lightweight Yoshi tailpiece
takes care of emissions. You cannot
just remove the convertor, your dealer
needs to reset the CDI box or you’ll find
yourself burning pistons. Under the tank,
there are various bits and bobs that can
be removed without messing with the
bikes electronics. They won’t give us too
much detail for some reason…
Every little bit adds up – even the
standard battery is replaced with a
lightweight lithium ION unit.
Talking electronics – the guys have made
a mounting for a full sized tablet – so you
can pop the bike into cruise control, sit
back and watch Netflix. Cool Huh!
No seriously, it’s the latest digital
road book system for rally navigation,
complete with the Bluetooth control by
Rallye Rampage. The old paper system
will be phased out at most events in the
near future. Rob has tested it here at
Tankwa Rallye – it works perfectly. This,
being a prototype is on a large tablet,
the system can accommodate a much
smaller screen –but interestingly, this
layout is the same size as the current
manual system.
RAD has mounted wider Rallye Foot
pegs. The stock front suspension has
been replaced with WP from KTM’s
1090R. It’s a mod that Rob requested
because, in his opinion, the 1090’s
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 61
front is amongst the best in KTM’s lineup. It still
accommodates the standard wheel and braking
system. Out back, they did a bit of valving – and the
suspension was set up for the bikes lighter weight.
The front steering damper is upgraded with an Ohlins
top unit on the way.
Seat Concepts supplied the seat – it’s a firmer – taller
seat than standard.
Aesthetically we love the transformation. It took a
couple of takes to register the new front end but we
all decide that we really like it. It’s a bit more sporty
and smoother than the standard double headlamp
setup. The little touches like the new tailpiece and the
integrated Tron indicator rails and running lights are
really, really cool. It just looks so lekker - still distinctly
KTM, but different.
Ride Impressions:
Hopping on there is that familiar 1290 feeling. Be
warned – the seat is very tall – this oake hopped on
and started up – and then had to call the photog to
raise the side stand. But it’s really a great addition to
any bike that you plan to do distance on. The pipe
sounds great, without being obnoxious.
Snick the bike into first, let the clutch out and off you
go.
If you have ridden a 1290, you’ll have an
understanding of just how meaty these bikes are.
They deliver huge gobs of torque and accelerate like
few others do. Now. Take off a significant amount of
weight in all the right places – and just imagine the
difference.
Just replacing the front faring makes the bike feel
smaller and more compact. Twist the throttle – the
front end gets all light without getting squirly – and
that’s something that we were worried about. She
blitzes up to the 200KPH mark really quickly, no
headshakes or anything untoward. On the day
we rode there were huge crosswinds, so we were
buffeted a bit – particularly because the bike is a bit
lighter.
This one was fitted with more road oriented Metzeler
Karoo Streets. The guys are waiting for Knobblies
that have the correct speed ratings – Pirelli Scorpions
are on the way. We did take it a bit easy in the dirt
– particularly thanks to the massive rainfalls the day
before – but she feels great. The suspension is well
set up for the gnarly stuff and the bikes handling is
really good.
It takes a bit to get used to having an I-Pad up front,
but it really only becomes an issue when you need
to go down a gnarly hill or similar and you need to
see where your front tyre is sitting. Rob is a monster
of a guy so he just peers over the top – no problem.
We were worried that things up front would explode
the moment we took a jump or hit a lurker – but there
was no vibration of rattles or rolls and we returned
the bike fully intact, despite the monster height.
Conclusions:
We like. A lot. These guys are on to something for
sure. Not many people will strip off the standard fare
to do this – but if you do happen to have a prang,
the Rallye faring looks properly cool – and still offers
excellent protection from the elements.
Maybe someone from KTM R&D see’s this and offers
a Rallye option…
But in the meantime, you can chat to RAD Moto –
they can get you sorted.

THE
SEGMENT
Whats the best way to really
get to know a bike?
Take it out for a good long ride.
That’s how!
Whats available
in the 900 segment?
is a seemingly odd-ball segment these days falling
between the bevvy of 650/660/700/750’s and the multitude
of 1000cc + bikes with, in a lot of instances not much
difference in pricing in both direction. Yet looking at the
900This
bikes on the road it is a pretty well supported segment of
the market, offering similar power and comfort to some of
the bigger offerings yet with the lightweight nimbleness of
some of the smaller bikes. Looking at the popularity of this
segment it makes one wonder why all the manufacturers
don’t compete in this class.
64 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 65
Imagine a T9 from Yamaha with that beautiful CP3
triple engine of theirs or a stonking Versys-X with
Kawasakis’ 950cc, or a Africa Twin with a 900cc
version of Honda’s stunning V4 800 from the Cross
Runner. And what about a light weight DL900 XT
from Suzuki with their gorgeous V-Twin?
We grabbed threre bikes in this class for our little
adventure, BMW’s GS 850 Rallye edition, KTM’s 890
R and Triumphs 900 Tiger. At the time of writing this,
Husqvarna’s Norden was not yet with us, but that’s
got to be a great addition to this segment. The Guzzi
850TT was not included and also missing is the 900
Multistrada. A shame really.
We roped one of our favorite lady riders, Morag
Campbell our instructor friend from OpenRider
(www.facebook.com/OpenRiderZA) to join the fray,
she actually showed us some cool new routes that
we’d never ridden before. It’s always lekker to hook
in with other adventure riders. Our route wound its
way from the metropolis of Sandton out along some
of our favorite routes past the Dam, along the Canals
and out towards Brits with lunch at the now famous
Beestekraal venue on the railway line. Our plan was
to head along to Jericho Rock… but time and a flat
wheel on our photog bike put us behind schedule.
Deadline for returning the bikes was looming so
we had to get a move on. If you are ever stuck out
in that neck of the woods without a tube… Jaco’s
Tyres carry stock and they got us sorted chop-chop.
073 173 8549
Tip: The old tube was patched and that now lives
under the seat in case of future emergencies…
We have featured all of these bikes before. The BMW
Adventure featured in a multi test with the chaps
from The Bike Show about a year or so ago. The
Triumph makes regular appearances. This was the
first time we’ve had the KTM 890R since we went
along to the launch earlier this year. It was Morags
first time on both the Triumph and the KTM, so that’s
pretty cool.
This ride was a great mixup of tar, gravel and sand…
exactly the stuff that bikes like this are made for. We
do live in a cool place – “You need a motorcycle in
your life!”
The bikes:
• The KTM and the BMW are outfitted with
liquid cooled, fuel injected parallel twin engines. The
Triumph, naturally is powered by a triple cylinder.
• All have 21 inch front wheels. The Triumph
and KTM boast 18 inch rears with a 17 on the
Beemer. Suspension on the KTM is by WP. The
Triumph comes with Showa units and the BMW has
the electronic ESA units.
• The BMW and Triumph have big-ish wind
screens. The KTM 890 has a smaller, more sporty
unit. The BMW is physically the largest of the 3
bikes, the KTM is the smallest and most compact of
the lot.
• All have TFT screens and just about every
electronic assistant known to man. The Beemer and
the Triumph arrive standard with everything. The
KTM’s track pack needs to be unlocked by your
dealer.
So! They all sound fairly similar on paper, bar
the obvious differences in displacement. But the
beauty of bikes like these is the fact that they are all
distinctly different and we’ll try to explain why that is.

DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 67
The BMW GS 850 Adventure rallye edition.
This one from BMW Motorrad West Rand (011) 761-3500
If big imposing adventure bikes are your thing then the 850 fits the bill.
You just know that the Beemer is going to be good on the road. And it
is. Exceptionally comfortable with good weather protection. The 6.5in
TFT dash first seen on the R1200GS in 2017 is a work of art. It’s easy
to use, has a classy display that delivers a plethora of information all
of which can be viewed even when it’s in bright sunlight and covered
in dust. While it doesn’t have the big grunt as that marvelous shift
cam equipped BMW 1250GS it has enough performance for the vast
majority of people. The 853cc parallel-twin motor has a 90-degree crank
pin off-set, which makes the feel of the motor a bit unique. With 95bhp
at 8250rpm and 67.8ft-lb torque at 6250rpm, there is plenty of useable
power on tap without it ever being too much. It’s smooth and engaging
with a strong bottom end and midrange, which is where people spend
the majority of their time. Riding modes are easily changed either at
standstill or on the move. It’s easy to jump between the pre-set Road,
Rain, Dynamic and Enduro Pro pre-set options and you can also easily
tailor the settings for what you like. The traction control and ABS can
be switched off completely if required and these settings remain in
place even if you switch off the bike, a refreshing change that avoids
you having to scroll through set-up menus every time you re-start your
journey. It has an adjustable screen, which can be placed in either a
low or high position easily and on the move. It comes standard with
three-level heated grips and wrap around handguards. Mostly, thanks to
the large tank, it is physically the largest bike of the bunch. The biggest
fuel tank of the lot translates to longer distances between refuels. In the
dirt and on the sandy roads that we traversed, the engines smoothness
makes things easy. Smooth throttle control is the order of the day…
just, easy. But remember to turn off the traction control in the sand…
.The electronically adjustable rear suspension gives 215mm travel with
230mm from the non-adjustable 43mm front forks. Braking performance
is impressive thanks to the floating Brembo calipers and Twin 305mm
disks which means you never need to use more than one finger when
braking. There is an off-road specific ABS setting configured within the
variable rider modes or the ABS can be turned off completely with the
push of a button. Compared to the other two bikes on this adventure,
the bike is the most predictable of the lot and as a result it’s really easy
to ride anywhere.
68 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
Morag says:
The BMW adventure riding class is my background, and I’m very
comfortable with the ergonomics, and riding style. You may read many
online reviews noting this bike is designed predominantly for touring,
and open gravel road. Although I had minimal time on gravel with this
adventure rallye on this outride, I used the F 850 GS when training in
Hechlingen Germany, while qualifying as a BMW Motorrad Instructor,
and rode through plenty of rough areas, sandy single tracks, twisting
and turning easily in tight turns in the forest. I find the bike to be the
flickable, well balanced, and manoeuvrable. The trick for me is that this
bike just requires a more aggressive riding style at slower speed, in
the more technical riding, which then adds to the sense of excitement.
On this outride I did however ride it predominantly on tar road and
found it extremely easy to ride, refined and smooth. Responsive and
comfortable, it easily accommodates a pillion. It’s agile in corners, has
cruise control, great torque, big road presence, and the kilometres just
disappear with no issues whatsoever. The many road imperfections
disappear under the plush suspension offering a “floaty feel”, and
the nice wide supportive seat is great, (89cm height, especially if
considering comfort for pillion/partner), and lowering options are
available if required. The TFT is clear, displaying a lot of information,
and coupled with the BMW ‘Wunderwheel’ controller on the handlebars,
engaging with the rider modes and electronics is intuitive and simple
to use. I enjoy the GS aesthetics generally, and my initial awareness to
the visual size of the tank and broad fairing, (which is larger than what
I’m used to), was forgotten once actually riding, although it looks big,
awareness quickly shifts to the smoothness and responsiveness of
the ride itself, and this tank and the larger windscreen, (adjustable 2
position on the fly), offer a great sense of protection and comfort, like a
cocooning. I enjoyed riding this bike, and I think it will open up many
different avenues of adventures for many people.
KTM’s 890 Adventure R
www.ktm.com
• Replacement for the 790 Adventure R.
• More off-road focused than the standard 890
Adventure.
• Now smoother and more refined than ever.
This was the first opportunity we go to ride this bike
after the launch earlier this year. And it’s a polar
opposite to the BMW.
Why polar opposite?
Well you need to go and ride one to understand. While
the BMW is all calm and civilized like, the KTM has a
more exciting, raw edge that people from a dirtbike
background will really enjoy.
As standard you get ‘proper’ off-road sized wheels
with chunky Metzeler Karoo 3 tyres, an off-road
riding mode, (Rally mode is extra), metal bash plate
and big, split 20-litre tank which is located on either
side of the bike to lower its centre of gravity for
better handing. You also get top-rate WP XPLOR
suspension, a TFT dash with connectivity, anglesensitive
electronics, radial brakes, 12v socket
and even a new cruise control switch. Should you
engage ‘Rally’ mode, (an optional extra), you have
the option of 9 different levels of traction control slip
while the dedicated off-road ABS setting, (standard
fitment), deactivates the angle sensitivity as well as
the ABS function to the rear but retains some ABS at
the front. The ABS can be deactivated completely if
you wish for off-road use. This is literally a barrel of
fun, aggressive, light, nimble… far closer to dirtbike
territory than your traditional adventure motorcycle.
The seat is wide, flat and firm, and the seating
position is upright yet relaxed with plenty of legroom
and a comfortable reach to the wide handlebar. The
WP XPLOR suspension, with nearly 10 inches, (254
mm), of fully adjustable travel front and rear, is a great
setup, responsive on dirt yet plush enough to cushion
a high-speed landing after launching off a ledge.
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 69
Although the WP XPLOR suspension are the same units as in the
790 Adventure R, KTM have revised their settings for the 890 R
and taken a bit of the off-road focus out of their road settings.
It’s only a click here and there but it makes the difference KTM
still have suggested on and off-road suspension settings on a
sticker under the seat, which are quick and easy to input through
the onboard tool kit, the road settings are now firmer and make
the R more settled when you up the pace. The parallel twin has
grown by 90cc to 889cc and with it not only becoming Euro5-
compliant but also gained 20% more rotating mass, a boost
of 9.8bhp and 8.8ftlb, (just under 12Nm), peak performance, a
reworked gearbox and a reinforced clutch. While the power and
torque gains seem marginal on paper, to ride the 890 motor is far
more refined than the 790 engine and as well as less mechanical
noise is smoother and more enjoyable to use with far fewer
intrusive vibrations thanks to new balancer shafts. The tweaked
gearbox is beautifully slick and with the optional quickshifter,
(which has also been updated), snicks up and down the box with
ease. It still has the same quick-revving nature that made the 790
so much fun, and is more than fast enough for road and off-road
use, however it now has the rough edges ironed out and is better
for it.
We gave the bike to Morag and – well we could not get her off
the thing for the rest of the ride…
My first bike was a Yamaha 660 xt, and I loved it, I did over 100
000km on it. I vehemently resisted all suggestions of upgrading
or changing … until I rode the BMW R1200 GS, where within
one minute I was in love, and ten minutes and one sunset later,
was making plans for finances … I loved how I felt when riding
it, a more fluid, competent stronger rider. And I am delighted to
discover, that the KTM 890 Adventure R has once again got me
in love with a bike. Riding this bike has triggered an emotional
reaction, a sense of personal connection and freedom, a feeling
of flow. I found it an easy to ride, compliant, smooth, intuitive
bike. Because it carries its weight low down, it feels grounded,
has a weightiness but is yet light, responsive and nimble, but not
“light-footed”, and fits my body posture ergonomics perfectly,
both sitting and standing. It’s confidence inspiring both on and
off road, encouraging a sense of play, a sense of “what if … ?” a
sense of fun. Even the peak hour Rivonia traffic was fun, allowing
me to easily and confidently zip through and stay way ahead of
Glenn and the guys as we were running late to return the bikes.
I love the immediate throttle response, even in the lower rev
range.
My personal response is as follows:
I didn’t feel intimidated by the size. I like the ergonomics, the
fairly wide handle bars, the narrow upper tank which offers unimpeded
stand-up riding and also an upright seating position.
The narrow’ish one-piece rally standard seat is comfortable, I
didn’t get a sore butt, (but I have some padding and I ride single,
with no pillion). I love the wind, and I didn’t mind the cut down
smaller windscreen; I might aftermarket to wider foot-pegs, but
I didn’t like the mirrors, (and I would try to aftermarket them).
The standard Karoo 3 tyres, at standard pressures, had ample
grip on all surfaces, (except mud, as surprisingly, we didn’t find
any). I generally don’t treat the road as a track-race, so wasn’t
particularly effected in cornering/ swerving by the 21 inch front
wheel, and I was getting into the tighter slower 6m circles at Wild
West, in-between doing elephant turns experimenting with the
slip on the variable traction control, (in Rally mode), I think this is
useful, a variable personalized traction control within Rally mode,
from 0-9 which seems to allow quite a bit of slip even when
active, and adjustable on the fly. Gravel cornering is lots of fun.
My preference is off-road riding, so I don’t mind slightly lesser
smooth riding on tar, but honestly, I wasn’t aware of vibrations,
the engine feels refined and compliant. I think the 890 adventure
R proves that off-road capability doesn’t automatically mean its
compromised for the tar road riding. I wasn’t aware of the need
to slide my butt to get one foot to ground, meaning that the

88cm seat height wasn’t an issue, (it does have options
to lower). I have an inseam of 82-83 cm, (not that tall),
and nor was I aware of the weight at approximately
200kg, as the weight is carried low and feels nicely
balanced. The TFT dash is very legible. I didn’t make
use of the connectivity options, it’s fairly intuitive to
work through the rider menu options, and to set up a
preferred rider style that can be easily selected. I think
this is a bike a person can grow with, a forgiving a bike
that offers confidence, and with the ability to utilise, (or
not!), the electronics for personalised riding styles. Like
the guys said… they could not get me off the thing!
Triumphs Tiger 900.
www.triumph-motorcycles.co.za
Finding middle ground. You enjoyed the comfort offered by the
Beemer, but you loved the more exciting ride delivered by the
KTM890?
Well then… You need to go and ride the Triumph. If ever there
was a blend of the two then this is it. The first Triumph Tiger 900
was launched in 1993. That bike eventually grew and evolved
into the Tiger 1200 with the ‘middleweight’ Tiger 800 filling out
the range. This Tiger 900 is the next generation of that smaller
capacity model. The old 800 Tiger was great, but thanks to
a ground up build a couple of years ago, they literally moved
the goal posts in this class. And it’s gorgeous! Just look at
it! The latest triple cylinder engine is something really special
and it’s just so comfortable and sporty on the road and very
capable and smooth in the dirt. We won’t bore you with too
much detail but the single biggest move up was when Triumph
technicians decided to upgrade the engine. The single biggest
change is the crankshaft on a motorcycle you don’t get much
more fundamental than that. So, for the first time we’ve got a
Triumph triple that doesn’t feature a 120° crank layout and the
evenly spaced firing intervals that go with it. It’s quite technical,
but Triumph refer to the new crank as a ‘T’, so the pins are
arranged at 180°-90°-90° intervals. This allows the firing order
to be managed so that two cylinders, (one and three), fire close
together, then there’s a gap to the third, (actually the middle one).
The result is heaps of personality that makes it really good fun to
ride. Oh and she loves to rev. Absolute power is a claimed 94bhp
at 8750 rpm, and peak torque happens at 7250rpm, but Triumph
also boast an increase across the rev range.
72 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
Off road you are mainly using fractional throttle openings, and
at 3750rpm the bike is producing over 40bhp, which is just right
for getting into the trickier stuff in the dirt. The modern adventure
market seems to love gadgets, and the Tiger comes with an
impressive level of equipment. You get multiple modes, heated
grips, cruise control, cornering ABS and traction control and big
TFT instruments. You get heated seats, a quickshifter, Bluetooth,
tyre pressure monitoring, centre stand and fog lights. In addition,
the Rally Pro has crash bars, sump guard and an extra mode. All
standard. It’s plenty comfortable too with the riding position very
similar to our old Xc model; you sit into the bike, but the bars are
now slightly closer to the rider. The new screen has five-position
adjustability with a 50mm height range using a simple push and
lift arrangement. It works really effectively and it’s easy to spend
long days on the bike with your favorite friend out back.
Although Morag did not spend much time on the bike, (we
could not get her off the 890), and has opted to ride it again
to venture an opinion, the rest of us took turns chopping and
changing as we charged along the roads around Harties and
Brits. It’s quite easy to understand why this bike won so many
international accolades, the folks from Triumph really developed
a bike for everyone. The higher freeway speeds were a piece of
cake thanks to the wind protection and deflection offered by the
screen. The twisty countryside roads around Harties were lots of
fun thanks to the Tiger’s sporty agility. The long, straight roads
past Brits? Hit the cruise control and relax! These motorcycles
are made to travel. Everything works. Everything is in the right
place. The bike feels light and nimble. From Beestekraal we
hopped onto those rutted, sandy roads that lead out to Jericho
Rock. Offroad mode, traction Control off – open up… the engine
and suspension steals the show. Slow down for the really sandy
corners… that engine is a gem. Even at 1,500 rpm in second
gear, with our photographer on the back, the engine continues
to be so smooth and eagerly pulls out of slow turns without the
need to shift. We can’t fault the suspension and brakes either…
it just such a cool, capable bike to ride. It’s never overwhelmed
or flustered… like the James Bond of the ADV market. 400 odd
kilometres of smiles later, we were back in the Big Smoke, racing
to get to the dealerships before closing time. The GS needed to
get home in a hurry, as did the Triumph. The Beemer still had a
bit of fuel left, the Triumph was shouting and flashing lights at us
for a refuel. We filled the 890 at the lunch stop just to be sure...
What a cool day on three very cool bikes. How can anyone not
enjoy riding bikes on a Sunny South African day? The question
is … which one is for you? Is it the Beemer that has a proven
pedigree of civilized touring, or is it the grin inducing KTM890-R.
Maybe something in between like Triumphs 900 Tiger – stirred
not shaken thank you!

Gyppo Work
Tuesday adventure ride
Making Tuesdays great again…
Tuesday is that ‘bleh’ day of the week,
no Monday morning hangover to deal
with or week end shenanigans to talk
about, it’s a long way from Friday, just
a day that is completely NAAFI, (No
Ambition And F-All Interest). So, we
decided to make Tuesday worthwhile,
make it a day to look forward to… it’s
also a day that it is easier to bunk because
it doesn’t look like you’re trying
to scrag a long weekend.
Tuesday the 9th of November was the
date for the fourth GYPPO WORK adventure
ride. The first one we all met at a
cool little coffee shop in Bapsfontien and
went out to Oppi Stasie in Cullinan. The
second one we met at a similarly lekker
spot in Brakpan and went out to the Val
Hotel in Val… of all places, somewhere
between Secunda, Standerton and
Greylingstad. The third one was actually
a Friday and we met in Bapsfontien
again and rode out to a brilliant little spot
on the Olifants river just there by Loskop
dam. This time we met at RAD KTM on
the island between the N1, Witkoppen
and Rivonia roads and headed out for a
brilliant lunch at the famous Beestekraal
Stasie restaurant run by the ever effervescent
Lynette and her friendly and
extremely efficient team. Here we were
treated to the best homemade beef,
chicken and vegan burgers with proper
homemade slap tjips and a milkshake.
RAD KTM put on a pre-ride snack of
some tasty muffins and fresh brewed
coffee, then it was clutches out and after
a little bit of an urban commute through
Sandton and Fourways it was into the
dirt, gravel and mud between fields of
green and all the colours of nature’s
pallet. The Monday before, we were all
nervously looking out the office window
at the rain, sleet and mist sipping on
hot chocolates and wrapped up in our
favourite ‘blankeys’ wondering whether
or not to call the whole thing off. However,
Tuesday saw sunny skies and
fresh blooms everywhere. Our route was
sposed to take us through some of the
local countryside near Lanseria before
picking up the tarmac again around
‘Harties’ to the start of the canal roads
through lush green farmlands into Brits.
But… we got a bit lost on the tar – so
the plan changed with a quicker rote to
Beestekraal and then an adventure return
trip…
Beestekraal Stasie is absolutely a
worthwhile stop. Lynette runs a tight ship
with great pricing, excellent food and
a fantastic atmosphere. There is also a
pub, a niknaks shop, some art and lots
of green grass and shady trees to picnic
under. After lunch it was farm roads,
quite thick with sand in some areas into
one of the local villages and on to the
famous… or infamous, Jericho Rock to
test our mettle and the ability of our machines.
The braver ones rode up the easy
route around the back, the stupid ones
walked-crawled up the main face, nobody
was brave enough ride up the front,
even with the offer of one of Glenn’s
bikes as a prize to whoever got to the
top. After sitting around in the shade
sipping on some ice cold cokes, shooting
the breeze, telling war stories and
still trying to cajole each other into riding
up the front face it was time to head
for home with a final fuel stop and an
impromptu prize giving. The canal roads
are ideal for the beginner adventure
rider, smooth, flat reasonably compact
dirt roads sweeping between manicured
farms, riverine bush and forest, bougainvillea
of every colour, friendly locals
waving you on and very little traffic, lots
of shade, sun reflecting off the canal
waters… flipping amazing.
With grins from ear to ear we raced the
setting sun back home. Ain’t Tuesdays
great?
Incidentally, we were invaded by Canada
at RAD KTM. Bill Macpherson, who
works up in Angola and passes through
South Africa on his way back home,
decided to hang around for a few days
and rent a bike from Marco at Primrose
Motorcycle. After riding around in the
rain on Monday he was quite despondent
and was considering returning the
bike and flying back home on Tuesday.
Fortunately Marco managed to get hold
of him at 07H20 and told him to meet us
all a RAD KTM and this is what he had to
say about the experience:

We all need a Motorbike in our Lives – Bunk Tuesdays
9 November 2021
“Asphalt, dirt, sand, sandy dirt, sandy asphalt, potholes, mud,
more mud, big rocks, even bigger rocks, riders down, riders
back up, farm fields, remote villages, trails, highways, mountain
passes, lake side views ….. all in one day!” This was my comment
to the group chat at the end of the day sitting in my hotel
room with muddy boots and a dust coated grin.
This epic journey started as a passing comment from my
new friend Marco who was renting me a bike for my first ADV
adventure in Africa. I had spent months working in Angola
following You Tube channels of solo riders covering Southern
Africa, and decided to give it a go myself. My past 10 years
of dirt bike and ADV riding in Canada was ready to be tested.
I researched bike rental outfits where ITALMOTO SA quickly
responded to kit me out with a top notch Honda Transalp 700.
After a nerve rattling flight from Luanda, I was at Marco’s shop
door the following day with my recently purchased riding gear
and perhaps a bit naïve to what lay ahead.
Not knowing about the GYPPO,(Bunk), Tuesday Ride, I had set
off Monday solo toward Sabie thinking I could squeeze in an
overnight trip returning to JNB the following day. At a tiny truck
stop 80km East of the city….I was wishing I had purchased
the rain gear at the bike shop earlier that day. The owner of the
truck stop took me in soaked to the bone, and fed me biscuits
and coffee where she said, “This is SA and we take care of our
visitors!” Defeated and near frozen in gusting rain and wind, I
tucked tail and limped back to my airport hotel for the night.
The following morning at 7:10am I sent a message to Marco,
asking about this ride he mentioned with some friends, and if
they might allow an outsider to join along. He replied with a pin
drop that to my amazement upon arrival was the largest KTM
Dealership I had ever seen! I was soon to get another taste of
South African hospitality!
This was not group of riding buddies, (“Oakes” they call each
other), but an organized and professional tour! Starting the
morning with welcome coffee and cake right down to 2 support
vehicles, professional photographer riding in the pack, a
medic, cold beverages and lunch on the route! In fact, it was
a well-planned full out ADV Adventure Tour! I could not have
been luckier as this was a long-time dream come true and all
by chance! Marco quickly introduced me to the 21 riders of all
ages and skill levels, (including one tank riding Border Collie),
where I was instantly treated like an old friend by all. Glenn
and Sean from Dirt Magazine welcomed me making sure I was
good to go with VIP like treatment!
We rolled out of the KTM yard, into the busy freeway system
where the excitement of the riders may have led to a few
wheelies and stoppies at the onset of this trip. I was grinning
like a Cheshire Cat, and it’s quite possible passing cars could
hear me “Whooo Hooooo!!! as I pulled away from every intersection
following the group of as we transitioned from highways
into winding roads toward hill country all on the wrong
side of the road from my Western perspective.
Our first check point was Hills & Dales, where we happily put
our tyres into some much anticipated dirt and dust. Here we all
found our place in the pack, and began to thread our way on
the twisty roads into the hills. We came out to more asphalt and
quickly made a fuel stop in Fourways, and then headed north
of Diepsloot into the back roads where we made our first ‘regroup’
stop west of Schoemansville, passing a beautiful lake
near Hartbeespoort.

We road north on asphalt where a few members of the
team were showing signs of a serious condition called
Dirt Withdrawal, by riding up the gravel shoulder at top
speed just to feel the grit beneath their tyres! We made
it to our lunch stop of the day, a truly rustic ranch house
Beestekraal Stasie Restaurant outside of Brits. The team
took time to mix and start telling stories and some good
laughs while we were treated to massive Burgers and
Fries. It was here where Glenn and Sean promised to
keep the remaining half of the ride on dirt … and they
made true with that promise!
We made our way toward Jericho Rock, weaving along
farm roads with mud puddles and a mix of tractors and
livestock. Passing groups of children running along side
cheering as we honked our horns to their delight. The
route into Jericho Rock was a twisty mash-up of sand,
rocks, gravel, and narrow trails – pure delight for the
team. It was here that we took our 3rd major break of
the day with the support truck waiting on location with
much needed cold drinks in the heat of the mid afternoon
sun. And yes, the Border Collie stayed with us the
entire time chilling on his owners tank! Glenn recruited a
small group of brave riders to ascend the technical path
up over the top of this massive rock hill. Sean tended
to the group below with good stories and we all had a
chance to laugh and put life on pause for a short while –
dirt covered bikes, new friends, and dusty smiles.
From The Rock, half the pack had to head out early and
the remaining team hit the final stage of the trip, and
perhaps the most challenging. Almost 2 hours of farm
fields, cow trails, irrigation canals, river crossing, water
and mud holes that could swallow your bike whole. I
believe that was the sweetest part of the day. When I did
dare to look up to the horizon I was greeted by rolling
mountains and hills, green fields, and winding rows of
trees following the water ways through the valley. We
stopped at times to pick up the odd victim of the Mud
Monster, and have some good laughs while doing so.
To my amazement, the Raptor Support Vehicle stayed
behind us through it all and would always find us as we
emerged from the cow trails and goat paths.
With the sun laying low in the sky, we made for asphalt
and crunched up the miles to Brits for a final fuel and
water stop. Here we sat with sand filled hair, racoon
dusty eyes and joked about the days ride. Glenn kept
the group smiling with the stories of our minor mishaps
and overall fun, with the reminder that We Must All have
a Motorcycle in Our Lives. The medic put it best with a
grin, “A bad days riding is better than and great day at
the office.” And this day of riding in sunshine through
the full gauntlet of terrain… this day was epic! One that
will give me hope through the cold Canadian winter
waiting for me back home. Thanks to Glenn and Sean
of Dirt Magazine, and also to Marco of ITALMOTO SA
for taking this Canuk out for the ride of his life in your
amazing home land of South Africa. Looking forward to
doing it again in 2022!
And if you have ever been to Pub & Restaurant you
will have met Mike, and would also know that Dingo is
his best mate. Well, they joined us as well with Dingo
attracting all the attention riding on the tank.

on the next GYPPO WORK Tuesday adventure ride.
A Mans Best Friend
Meet Dingo
Man’s best friend never fakes its love, and
this is no truer anywhere than with Miguel
“Mike” Da Silva and his best mate Dingo.
Mike and Dingo have travelled through Africa
together on Mikes Honda 700 Transalp
with Dingo chilling under a tree while Mike
clears each border post, then joining Mike
on the other side by nipping through the
bush and hopping back onto his lap and
tank with a big doggy grin and tongue in the
wind.
Mike and Dingo own an extremely popular
Pub & Grill in Lakefield Rd, Benoni named
after Dingo that on a regular basis gets
left to the “Minister of Home Affairs”, Mrs
Da Silva, to look after while they go off on
their adventures. Dingo is a huge attraction
at the pub and big mates with most of the
regulars… us included. A friendlier, more
independent pooch will be hard to find
and fiercely faithful to Mike. We have been
honoured to have them join us on two of our
GYPPO WORK Tuesday rides and really look
forward to hosting them again very soon.

Racing in Sweden: Novemberkasan…
19 hours of mud!
By Peter Schlueter.
Here’s something we bet you didn’t know. Since 1915, the
Swedish Motorsport Federation has hosted Novemberkåsan.
Novemberkåsan is known as “Sweden’s toughest Enduro competition”
and is a test of strength for everyone who rides it. We
believe that some washing machine and detergent manufacturers
also use the event to test their products each year.
In the early 1930s the total competition was about 600–700
kilometres. Today the event is about 300 kilometres long.
The trophy goes to the rider who has won the competition three
times.
IN SWEDEN
Only a few manage to reach the finish line. The competition
is run mostly during the night where the riders have to endure
many hours in the dark and cold and cope with both slopes,
pits, mud puddles, mud and streams etc.
This year, 200 Riders started the race at 9 in the morning. The
first finisher came in the following morning at 5am.
To quote one of the German spectators, Bernd Buchholz:
“These Swedish riders have nails in their heads!”
So don’t squeak about The Roof!
19 hours in the saddle!
Mud Glorious mud!

A LITTLE BIT OF
R ‘N R IN KENYA
LINK
Photo 1
As you would have read in the previous episode, our friend
Jacques Nel contracted malaria in Uganda and was really
struggling so we decided to make a dash while he still had
a little bit of strength to handle a heavily laden GS through
tough off road to Nairobi where a friend of Jacques has
been living for quite a while now.
We entered Kenya at Busia and met up with a fellow adventure
biker from the Czech Republic at the border post who was
really loving travelling through Africa. Most of the African
countries have a one-stop border post where both the
country’s border officials share, this make crossing the border
much easier.
We crossed back into the Southern hemisphere on our way to
Nairobi, see photo 1
Enroute to Kisumu, considered the second most important
city, after Kampala, in the greater Lake Victoria Basin with its
climate classified as humid (over 1,100m a.s.l., for those who
know what that means), and temperatures reaching as high as
34 degrees Celsius during the hot seasons and covers an area
of approximately 417 Km² on the shores of the majestic Lake
Victoria, we experienced our first major breakage on Cronje’s
motorcycle, The link above the driveshaft broke! The reason
was hitting an unexpected speed-bump with a heavy loaded
motorcycle just a little bit too fast. The true friendliness and
generosity of the African people was once again shown when a
local truck driver took me on his motorcycle to an engineering
shop which repaired the link within 2 hours, see photos
2 and 3. Jacques in the interim also managed to contact
some industry mates back home and “B&N, (Brad and Niel),
motorcycles” in Edenvale, (give Niel a call on 060 070 5517),
donated a link which was flown to Nairobi with a biker friend,
who happened to be travelling to that part of the world, in his
hand luggage so we had a spare just in case we got stuck
again. Biker’s brothers standing together!
We stayed at Jacques’s friends house in Nairobi in utter luxury
for a couple of days so Jacques could recover/recuperate
from his bout of malaria. It was great to put our feet up a bit,
wash off the trail dust, rest our weary bones and rejuvenate our
spirits as well as do some much needed maintenance to our
trusty and faithful steeds. Thank you so much folks, you can
never fully understand how much we needed that!
Spare parts were obtained from Jungle Junction, a camp site
and resort based in Nairobi, owned by Chris, that also stocks
a bunch of essential parts for the cross Africa adventure bikers
and has a fully kitted out professional workshop in his garage,
we serviced our bikes, see photo 4.
Thankfully, after a few days of airconditioned comfort and
luxury, Jacques was feeling much better from the malaria and
decided not the fly back to South Africa but to complete the
rest of the trip to Europe with Colin and Cronje. We managed
to wander around a bit and experience a bit of the Kenya
lifestyle. The farms on the outskirts of Nairobi is well organized,
beautifully maintained and form very pretty scenery.
Nanyuki is a Market town in Laikipia County of Kenya lying
northwest of Mount Kenya along the A2 road and at the
terminus of the branch railway from Nairobi. The name is
derived from Enyaanyukie, the Maasai word for ‘resemblance’.
It is situated just north of the Equator, (0° 01’ North).

We immediately started with the
medication and monitoring him very
closely… while camping – not an
ideal situation, but this is a very real
consideration when travelling in Africa.
Late that night I noticed that a rain
storm was approaching and decided to
move all our equipment and small tents
into the restaurant/bar area as this was
under cover offering more protection
and comfort to Jacques. This was not
an easy task as hippos were grazing
about 50 meters from our tents and as
we all know they are possibly the most
dangerous creatures in the wild when
they are startled. The next morning
Collin and I set off for the famous
Murchison falls with our motorcycles but
had to turn back due to the extremely
wet and muddy roads which made
riding bikes extremely treacherous and
we did not want to hurt ourselves and
jeopardise the rest of our trip. With the
resort and park fees being quite dear,
we decided to head to a small town
called Pacwach on the outskirts of the
national park close to the border of
South Sudan where Jacques could get
some proper medical attention, see
photo 7 taken of this journey in the rain
with a very sick team member.
We were advised by the local police to
go to Hotel Alleluja in Pacwach, (see
photo 8). The manager, a wonderful
and lovely and caring lady immediately
started treating Jacques and called
the local “doctor” to attend to him.
We later discovered that the “doctor”
had a nursing degree in obstetrics! But
rather somebody with some kind of
formal medical back ground and local
area knowledge than a couple of bikers
inexperienced in any formal form of
medical assistance!
We stayed in Pacwach, (see photo
9), for 3 days and decided to move
Jacques to Entebbe from where we
could fly him back to South Africa for
further medical treatment. This was a
terrible trip as we had to cross Kampala
during a public holiday and Jacques,
although in no fit condition to do so and
extremely feverish had to ride his own
fully laden BMW 1200GS through all
sorts of road and trail conditions and
negotiate all the same obstacles and
trails we did.
We eventually reached our destination in
Entebbe and stayed over with friends of
mine, for 2 days. A couple of days later
the medication and medical care had
the desired effect and Jacques indicated
that he much felt better and would be
able to do the 2 day trip to Nairobi in
Kenya. Due to the lost days we could
not stay in Jinja and ride the rapids on
the Nile as planned so we headed to
Busia where we crossed in Kenya for
the next leg of our journey…
Look out for next months episode, safe
travels.

ARE EMISSION CONTROLS
SPOILING THE FUN?
By: Sean Hendley
Credit: Stephan Marais – KTM SA – for
his knowledge, input and assistance
with this article.
Like it or not – change is a-comin to
our industry. Sean popped down to
kuier with KTM Groups technical man
Stephan Marais for a chat about emission
control laws and the effect it is
having in the motorcycle industry…
He says:
We are told that we are killing our planet
with the emissions from our internal
combustion engines - and in an effort to
save us all from extinction a whole lot
of rules, regulations and policies have
been passed into law regarding said foul
gasses.
And! We all know the effect that has had
on our industry. Way back in 2014… or
thereabouts, new homologation laws
were gazetted in this country and…
POOF! Just like that all sorts of bikes
were outlawed, and everything had to
have a catalytic converter fitted into the
exhaust and that was the end of loud
pipes and the general perception was
that was also the end of all our fun…
OR is it?
We wanted to know what this whole lot
was all about. This emission thing has
brought about a new era of motor engineering
that government school educated
old timers like us do not understand
and cannot fix ourselves.
Cat vs Decat, Fuel injection and electronics
packages vs carbs, points and
condensers, (basically IT Tech mechanics
vs busted knuckles and spanner grease
monkeys).
2 stroke vs 4 stroke, (Thank the Good
Lord above they haven’t forced diesel
tech on the motorcycle market yet – oh…
wait, Diesel is also a swear word these
days). But electric tech is lurking in the
sidelines. Silent running bikes. WTF?
This is quite a wide, involved and pretty
complicated topic as it turns out and
varies from manufacturer to manufacturer
and from model to model from the
same brand. Here, we just scratch the
surface and have left out quite a bit of
some possibly interesting bits and bobs
which we might explore at another time
in other articles. The fact is. Laws are
forcing changes to the traditional way of
motorcycle thinking.
2 Stroke vs 4 Stroke
Now! Make no mistake – we are huge
fans of 2 strokes and were particularly
traumatised by their demise when the
new homologations laws were introduced
way back when.
88 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
This led to the death of so many cool
2-stroke models, particularly from
Japanese manufacturers.
Supposedly their smoke – our favourite
cologne – was way too polluting and
damaging to the environment and the
ozone.
Really?
Uhm, weren’t diesel vehicles considered to
be the preferred ‘Green’ mode of transport?
Have you seen how they smoke?
Have you breathed in that crap? Jet
planes?
Somethings stinks here… and it isn’t 2
stoke smoke.
It has taken a few dedicated years of
hard work by a heroic few to design a
fuel injection system for 2 strokes that is
becoming acceptable to the tree huggers
and politicians. We are pretty sure we’ll see
this tech seeping through to other brands
as controls tighten up.
A quick side note. We know for sure that all
EU spec bikes come into the country with
full emissions packages onboard on both
2T and 4T, (dirt bikes in particular), and
that they are removed and the mapping
gets changed by the importers. Yup, dirt
bikes also come with catalytic converters,
charcoal filters, lambda sensors, solenoids
and actuators that all get removed before
they hit the showroom floors.
“2T or not 2T?” that is the question…
Supposedly 4T bikes burn cleaner, have
a better longevity and are more rideable.
But they also have more working parts,
valves, valve seats, valve guides, valve
springs, shims, shim buckets, rocker
arms, cams, timing chains, timing chain
guides, timing chain tensioners and a
bunch more stuff that 2T motors don’t
have and don’t need.
4T motors are more fuel efficient and are
generally kinder to the environment.
However, the advent of the fuel injected
2T motors and advances in cleaner burning
2-stroke oil is making 2- Sroke tech
more acceptable.
Some, like the KTM groups TPI system
with its sensors, ECU’s and fancy
technology does all the thinking for you,
negating the human factor out of the oil
fuel mixture, and ultimately making a
cleaner ride.
Also, for endurance and extreme race
and riding like The Roof of Africa for
instance, every time the rider stalls and
restarts, the sensors kick in, check conditions
and sends that info back to the
ECU which adjusts air fuel accordingly to
achieve optimum performance – and the
cleanest possible burn.
Is the fun, character and charm being
engineered out of our bikes by all the
emission control systems and all the new
electronics and technology - or, is it just
making it different, better and we need to
move with the times?
Modern bikes in most instances are mind
blowing, ridiculously fast, amazingly
stable and easy to ride in any conditions.
They might not shake, rattle and roll like
the old bikes, but they do snap, crackle
and pop when you twist hard on the
throttle in full sport mode and bang even
harder on the quick shifter.
FUEL INJECTION vs CARBS.
Fact: Fuel injection burns cleaner than
Carburettor.
The only real advantage carburettors
have over fuel injection is that they can
be fixed almost anywhere. The trick
comes in fine tuning them or setting
them up for different altitudes, air pressure,
humidity and etcetera.
Fuel injection seldom gives trouble – in
our experience the fuel pumps tend to
give in after lots of mileage, but you cant
just fix them on the side of the road.
Fuel injection barely ever clogs up with
old fuel, basically because there is no
float bowl or jets to speak of. Fuel injection
is also self-correcting every time
it starts. That’s where all your sensors
come into play, communication with your
bikes ECU (Brain).
DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021 89
What does that mean?
Well, you don’t have to re-jet every time you change altitude or if the day is
particularly humid or even drier than usual, something the racer boys can
appreciate especially when racing up here in Gauteng and then going off
to the coast to race the following weekend.
Think about it on road going bikes too.
We love to go riding in the mountains, along the coast, next to a dam/
lake or a river or in valleys or all of that in just one ride if you are really
lucky. Conditions are changing all the time and you bike is recalibrating
accordingly all the way to make sure you have maximum power, torque
and performance with the best fuel economy and emissions.
Basically, you get more saddle time and less time trying to figure all that
stuff out for yourself.
And the bikes burn clean – not rich or lean.
It works for us – We like it!
Catalytic convertors:
A catalytic convertor is a device that is built into the exhaust system of a
motor vehicle, containing a catalyst for converting pollutant gases into less
harmful ones.
Don’t just grind the catalytic convertor out…
We’ve all heard told that catalytic convertors can rob your bike of power, mess
with the top end and all sorts of other accusations including that it takes away
the “Braaappp”, so I went along and chatted to some very knowledgeable
people on the subject and got some definitive answers.
And the definitive answer is that Decatting your bike really can stuff it up… and
your wbikes warranty becomes null and void. Unless you get your brands IT
Tech wizard to remap your ECU and a bunch of other bits of computer floating
around your bikes engine.
Here’s why:
Removing the catalytic converter messes with the flow of gasses from the
engine out the exhaust, reducing the back pressure, (much like gutting a pipe
back in the day), and it makes the engine run too lean.
And we all know that when an engine runs too lean it also runs too hot and
in prolonged use will cause detonations on the piston, (the particles in the
material get so hot that they start exploding), and inevitably it can eventually
lead to the piston melting and a complete mechanical failure.
This is basically the equivalent of taking a blow torch to your pistons…
unless you get it done by the authorised pro’s and they remap the
electronics into believing the cat is still there, which will include the installation
of a performance kit or evo kit from the factory and require the
fitment of a performance full system exhaust pipe eliminating the catalytic
converter, the removal of the charcoal filter and various sensors associated
with the Cat and charcoal filter and one or two solenoids/actuators
here and there and then changing the fuel mapping. A lot of equipment, a
lot of labour and plenty know how that all cost a pretty penny, but if you are
addicted to power and speed or just wanna be the ‘Groot Meneer’ at the braai then
you just have to do it…
90 DIRT & TRAIL MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2021
We asked the question: Modern Fuel injection eliminates the
need for fiddling with jetting – no matter the altitude. Surely it
will pick up that the Cats are removed and compensate with a
richer fuel mixture?
Well it turns out that, particularly on the latest models it does
not.
There are a bunch of sensors all over the exhaust system,
airbox and etc, as well as charcoal filters with sensors and so
much more that measure atmospheric conditions like unburnt
fuel, (which gets reburned by the way), altitude/air pressure,
humidity, hot and cold, O2 vs CO2 and a bunch of other
conditions and variables that all affect the air fuel ratio every
millisecond the engine is running. These sensors then send all
this information along to the relevant ECU, yes there is more
than one and up to nine in some cases, which process the
information and then adjust the air fuel mixture to be optimum
for performance, fuel economy and power with acceptable
emissions.
Removing the Cat messes with the bikes brains and gets it
adjusting, recalculating, recalibrating and changing stuff up
like the cat is still there and when the info comes back less
than favourable from all the sensors its does it all over again
and again and again and… until it eventually has a nervous
breakdown and just blows everything up.
rolled off the production line - and you have to have some very
top secret and complicated equipment to connect the bike to
the cloud before you can access any of its ‘Control Units’ and
start changing the settings.
The codes of which appear as lights on a board and you have to
have a ‘monkey puzzle’ card for each different model of bike to
know what code the light is referring to, then you have to look
that code up in a thesaurus of codes before you know which
sensor or part to closer investigate and or replace.
Which is a great little Segway to the next part of this
investigation, the electronics packages.
But before we do, it has been noted by more than one rider that
the re-installation of the catalytic converter noticeably increased
the low torque of the engine and that is what you need to get
the hole shot and accelerating out of corners or coming off
the brakes or getting the front wheel in the air for that perfect
wheelie pic.
Food for thought.
Happy biking…
Remapping basically switches this function off and
runs the engine on a pre-setting determined by the
technician. And don’t think you can get your
nefarious hacker computer nerd nephew or
niece to hack in and do all of that for you on
the cheap.
On modern bikes, each bike has its own
unique code, pretty much like DNA, registered
with its company of manufacture the day it
