Laying the groundwork for a better
digital future
While out enjoying the Slocan Valley Rail Trail in summer
2021, you might have seen an unusual piece of equipment: a
tractor-like vehicle mounted with a huge spool of cable. Its job:
to dig a trench at the edge of the trail and place the cable in
it, laying the necessary groundwork to help improve internet
access for many businesses and residents in the Slocan Valley.
One of the Trust’s priorities is to improve access to reliable,
affordable, high-speed connectivity in the region, especially in
underserved rural areas. People in the Basin have expressed
that good connectivity is essential when it comes to education,
employment, health care, entertainment and connecting with
others.
Two new projects will add 185 kilometres of fibre optic cable
in the region. With this new backbone in place, local internet
service providers can gain access to this network at various
points of presence along the route. This would enable them to
greatly improve service to meet the current and future needs
of local communities, businesses and residents.
In the Slocan Valley, the fibre installation project begins at
Playmor Junction, runs up the Slocan Valley through Winlaw,
Slocan and New Denver, heads northwest to Nakusp and then
stops at Shoreholme. In a second location—the South Country—the
project runs between Jaffray and the United States
border at Roosville, including Yaq̓ it ʔa·knuqⱡi ‘it, Grasmere and
Baynes Lake, plus an additional branch to Kragmont.
In some places, like along the Rail Trail, the cable is being
buried underground. There are also two other installation
methods being used: aerial and submarine. The aerial technique
is used to install fibre optic cable on existing utility and
communications poles. Where it makes sense, the cable is
being laid under water, like in Slocan and Summit lakes. In the
South Country, construction crews are undertaking mostly
aerial and underground installations. All work is on track to
finish by spring 2023.
The project is also being supported by the Province’s Connecting
British Columbia program, plus the regional districts
of East Kootenay and Central Kootenay and the communities
of Slocan, Silverton, New Denver and Nakusp. Once it’s completed,
internet service providers can connect to this expanded
backbone, and up to 6,400 households could ultimately benefit
from improved high-speed connectivity

SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken
down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the
numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box.
Each number can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in which the
numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers
you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Podcast Club explores memory
The Nelson Library’s Podcast Club is like a book club, but for
podcasts!Every month we listen to a curated list of podcast episodes
on a particular topic or theme and then we meet to discuss
them. It’s the perfect discussion for time-starved folks. No
long books to read! Listen to the podcasts while you commute,
do chores or go for a walk. Listening to podcasts is such a great
way to learn something new and then further reinforce that
knowledge by discussing with others. In January we are diving
into memory. We’ll explore how memory works and how it fails,
making memories out of a pandemic haze, creating meaning out
of our memories, and how to be happier with some tips on how
to create and remember happy memories.

What is ideal tire pressure in
cold weather?
Lower temperatures mean lower tire pressure, so be prepared
to inflate your tires more often during the cold weather months.
Cars typically require a tire pressure of 30 to 35 psi (pounds of
force per square inch). The recommended psi for your car is the
ideal tire pressure year-round; there aren’t different numbers for
summer or winter.
When outdoor temperatures drop significantly, so does the
pressure in your tires. When it’s hot outside, warmer air molecules
in the tire move around faster and bump into each other
more, raising the tire pressure to a potentially overinflated level.
When the temperature drops, the air molecules slow down and
stick together, resulting in a drop in air pressure and a potentially
underinflated tire.
Many tire manufacturers, such as Firestone and Goodyear,
estimate that tires lose one psi for every 6 degrees Celsius the
outside temperature drops. If your car has a Tire Pressure Monitoring
System, the warning light will be triggered by at least a 25
per cent drop in tire pressure.
Check your tires when your car has been parked for at least
three hours. (Driving raises the air temperature and therefore
the air pressure in the tires.) Your car’s ideal tire pressure is usually
listed inside the driver-side door. Be sure to check the recommended
pressure for the front and rear tires in case they’re
different. It’s best to check your tires once a month, but during
the winter you might need to check them more often.
There’s a school of thought in snowier locales that underinflated
tires are better for driving on snow because the tires will
make more contact with the surface. While that’s technically
true, it’s never safe to intentionally drive on underinflated tires.
Driving on underinflated tires makes you three times more
likely to be in a collision related to tire issues, according to a
2012 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Properly inflated tires handle better, save gas and last
longer.

Jane Lake January 2 nd 1938 - December 18 th 2021
With heavy hearts the family of Jane Lake must
announce her passing on December 18th,
2021. For 64 years, Jane has been part of the
Lardeau Valley community and her kind and
inquisitive presence will be dearly missed.
Jane Lake (née Wells) was born in Los
Angeles, California on January 2nd, 1938
to Marguerite and Philip Wells. She and
her siblings, John, Bill, and Martha, were
raised in the Quaker community and attended
Friends’ schools in California. It was through
the Quaker network that, in 1958, a 20-year-old
Jane Wells made her way to the wilds of Argenta, BC
where she stayed for a time with Bob and Ruth Boyd.
THANK YOU
It has been my privilege to serve Kaslo and area, and
the West Kootenays, these past 32 years. I have retired
as of December 31, 2021, although I am staying on in
an advisory capacity for the firm of Thompson, LeRose
& Brown, which I joined in 2019.
Our Kaslo office at 437 Front Street will remain open from
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday to Friday. My indispensable
assistant of many years, Samantha Bekker, will continue to
manage the office and to carry on with her conveyancing
and other duties. Lawyers from Thompson, LeRose and
Brown's Trail and Castlegar offices will have conduct of
client files. The firm expects to be announcing a permanent
replacement for me in the Kaslo office in
the coming weeks.
Again, thank you to all of my clients over the years,
from Trail to Gold Hill and the East Shore to Edgewood.
For Georgie and I, Kaslo has been a wonderful
place to raise our family and to contribute professionally
and personally to this vibrant local and regional
community. The people here are simply the best, and
Kaslo and the Kootenays will always be our home.
Thomas R. Humphries,
Barrister & Solicitor
There she soon met Roy Lake, whom she married in 1960.
Together they had three children who they raised in the flats
of Argenta: Margaret, Cathy, and Duncan. Roy and Jane
managed a large cattle ranch and farm on the flats for many
years where she grew a beautiful flower and vegetable garden.
Their place was a hub for people from both sides of the valley
to meet and plan and learn from one another. Jane was an
active member of the community at the head of the lake, especially
with the Friends School and was an avid reader and
supporter of the NDP. She struggled throughout her life with
depression and was well supported by the community and
especially by Roy. Roy and Jane moved to Meadow Creek after
retirement and then later relocated to downtown
Kaslo where they fostered a magnificent
garden and many local friendships. In recent
years they lived in the Kaslo Hospital Long
Term Care, supported and cared for by staff
and community. We are grateful for all the
love and support received over the decades
by these communities.
Jane found fascination and delight in many
things – including birds, flowers, myth and fantasy
– but most of all in her children and grandchildren.
She was a voracious reader, had an incredibly
active mind and an artist’s eye. She was sharp, strong
and loving until the end.
Jane is survived by her husband, Roy Lake, her daughters
Margaret (Kevin) Murphy and Catherine Lake, her daughter-in-law
Yvonne Boyd, and by her grandchildren Connor,
Erin, Anna, Jesse, Kate (Noah), Andrea, Aidan and Danan,
and great-granddaughter Claire. She was predeceased by her
son Duncan in July 2021.
Due to Covid restrictions and concerns a simple family
burial took place Dec 23rd, 2021. When conditions allow a
Memorial for Jane will be held in Argenta.
Jane, Mom, Nana – you were much loved and will be dearly
missed.

Motivation to move
In today’s digital environment, getting
enough physical activity each day takes planning.
The motivation to move is improved by
getting out of the house and going to a designated
workout location. Students at Seven
Summits Centre for Learning enjoy the brisk
walk to the local gym for a variety of exercise
programs. The physical education workshops
are facilitated to incorporate big ideas
from the B.C curriculum, active learning,
and exposure to new skills. The local fitness
facility offers an exciting atmosphere and
functional equipment to support an effective
workout. “We are learning about cardiovascular
fitness, strength training, and flexibility
training,” said Valen Diplock, a Grade eight
student. “So far since September we have done
a bunch of different exercises like golf, tennis,
basketball, disk golf, skating, curling and now
the gym- it’s just fun to learn while we feel
like we’re playing.” The students benefit from
the introduction to new types of exercise and
the program offers interesting and innovative
sports to keep their attention. To date attendance
has been almost perfect. Students are
not skipping physical education, and they are
showing up to support each other on teams
and in games. “PE is a chance to get moving
and reduce stress. At 7S we are academically
focused, so having an active break that is also
intellectually stimulating fits our culture,” says
Tanis Shippy the Centre administrator. For
many, physical education would seem like an
easy credit; however, the learning doesn’t stop
just because we are out moving around the
community. Anatomy, physiology, psychology,
team spirit, good sportsmanship, and
sport protocol are the focus in each activity
plan as well as key vocabulary and expected
learning outcomes. Students follow the mnemonic
T.R.U.E: T for try, R for respect, U for
understanding, and E for etiquette. Expectations
are consistent even though the monthly
physical focus changes. Students thrive by
participating and perhaps find new types of
exercise that they can excel at doing. “Often I
use the example of a 7S alumni who learned
to cross country ski in PE
and now is burning up the
Nordic Race Circuit,” says
the workshop facilitator Tara
Hauck. Physical education
is critical in these formative
years, especially when
students are deciding who
they are and what they are
‘good’ at. Sports need to play
a part in that equation for
a lifelong engagement and
better health. “Attention is
maintained through offering
intriguing options of sports
to support basic kinetic
movement. For example,
the September focus on the
locomotor swing movement
was taught through golf and
tennis, the October focus on
throwing was experienced
through basketball, disc golf,
corn hole, ladder golf, and
darts. November’s lessons
taught slide and glide movements
through skating and
curling. Now in December
they are learning how to put
One quick turn...
and it’s all over for this dog!
it all together with human movement science,
like yoga.”

Funding for local fairs,
festivals and events
New Democrat MLA Brittny Anderson
says new support from the BC New Democrat
government will help local fairs, festivals and
community events resume in the Kootenays.
“Arts and culture festivals are such a huge
part of our Kootenay lifestyle,” said MLA
Anderson. “The pandemic and the uncertainty
it brings has been incredibly difficult
for many of us, especially for event organizers.
I know many of us are craving a big ol’
Kootenay party, and I’m so excited to see that
our government is supporting these events so
they are able to come back strong and bring
us all the joy that we’ve been missing out on.”
Seven fairs, festivals, and events in the
region will benefit from nearly $400,000 in
recovery funding. Events and festivals like
Shambhala, the Starbelly Jam Music Festival,
and the Tiny Lights Festival are among the
recipients.
Jimmy Bundschuh, Founder of Shambhala
Music Festival, had this to say about the grant,
“On behalf of myself and the whole team at
Shambhala Music Festival, I would like to
thank the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture
and Sport for
their support.
We are sincerely
grateful
to receive this
grant from the
Fairs, Festivals
and Events
Recovery
Fund.”
It’s no secret
that the last
two years have
been very difficult
for those
who work in
events and the music industry, and we have
not been immune to the challenges,” continued
Bundshcuh. “This grant will support us
with the tremendous challenge of returning
after two years of postponed programming.
We look forward to creating unforgettable
winter can be unpredictable...
we have dependable footwear to get you through it!
experiences for our guests, as well as getting
our staff back to work doing the job they
love to do after a very difficult two years.”

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the New Democrat

Lester
sponsored by
Lester is a big orange kitty with lots of love to give.
His previous family took him in as a stray and nursed him
back to health. He is now looking for his happily ever
after. Lester loves to play and snuggle. He is used to being
let outside so this big snuggle bug would do best with a
family that lives far from a busy street. Lester has lived with
female cats (prefers them to males), dogs and children.

Leadership training for youth
A Leadership Journey; The First Steps is a program for 12 to
18 year oldscreated by the Columbia Basin Trust, Basin Youth
Network. This program is designed to support youth in building
confidence in leadership roles, boosting self-esteem, positive
identity, and resilience. The Leadership Journey provides
individuals with practical everyday life skills and helps reduce
anxiety associated with public speaking.
This is a 6-week program, starting February 10, held at the
Nelson & District Youth Centre, 608 Lake Street. There will be
no test to complete this course, but we ask that youth attend
all six workshops for 90 minutes/week. Upon completion, you
will receive a certificate which is a great addition to a resume.
If you or anyone you know may be interested in this program,
please register through Sam by emailing nyan@nelson.
ca or call 250-352-8121.

Volunteering:
here’s to giving back in 2022
At this time of good intentions and resolutions for the new
year, why not look toward volunteering as a healthy way to
give back. Opportunities to volunteer are everywhere, so the
key is to decide how to best put volunteering muscles to work.
Volunteering is good for the body and mind. Many studies
show that people who volunteer have lower stress levels, and
this is good news for health. By spending time giving back
and working with other fun, motivating people, the good
mood is infectious. Hard work and dedication to a project
are a great way to create purpose and feel successful in that
accomplishment.
Volunteering also creates connection with others in the community.
Actions speak louder than words. By showing up to
support projects and people, the gift of participation is appreciated.
If someone is new to a community, or feels out of touch,
they can ask around to find volunteer options.
Volunteering is an opportunity to try new things. At a recent
volunteering project at Seven Summits Centre for Learning,
where volunteering is an integral part of the program, a student
had the rewarding experience of painting a room for the
first time.
THE TIME IS NOW!
Taking orders for June 2022!
WE’RE
OPEN!
Seven Summits Centre was founded by the community for
the community. The Centre owes its existence to a progressive
and passionate group of visionary parents and supporters who
wanted to keep Grades 8 -12 in Rossland after the secondary
school closed its doors to high school students in 2013. As a
result, community engagement and social awareness are an
integral component of
the Centre culture.
Both students and parents
are offered monthly
opportunities to give
back through a variety
of options. For example,
the garlands and bows
seen along main street
were placed by Seven
Summits Grade 12 students.
Those hard working senior students braved the cold, one
even in shorts, to beautify the town.
Volunteering gives students real-life experiences, enhanced
skills, and improves their employability. Look for Seven Summits
students in the community helping with the Earth Day
cleanup, at the Rossland Arena, at the Rossland Museum, and
other odd jobs. Students go where they are needed to help
where they can.
