Catching Up With

BOB THE DRAG QUEEN

The iconic winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and star of “We’re Here” is returning

to NYC to host one of nightlife’s most important showcases.

Interview >>>

Hey, Bob! First things first.

I’ve seen your new hair and

bearded look…fetching!

But why the change?

Because I’ve been out of

work! I got surgery on my

throat performed. So, if I’m

not performing, I usually

don’t shave unless I have to.

So, then I was like, “Well, I’ve

always wanted to see what

I would look like with hair

again.” This will all be gone by

the New Year!

How does it feel to have

your new voice? Does it

seem stronger?

Well, not yet. I’m still in my

recovery phase, but I can

talk. I haven’t tested the

limits of my voice yet, to

be honest…and I’m a little

scared to.

While filming these past

two seasons of HBO’s

drag documentary series

We’re Here, you must have

learned so much about the

art of drag while seeing it in

the context of these rural

towns and small cities,

where you wouldn’t expect

to see it.

Yeah. It’s been really lovely,

just traveling the world and

doing drag and getting to

experience queer people

from all around the world

and amplify their voices and

help tell their story. It’s been

really, really rewarding.

Of course, the episode

when you guys were in

Selma was very emotional

and timely. When you find

yourself in a very emotional

situation like that on

camera, is that something

that you get nervous about

people seeing, or do you

just kind of forget the

camera’s there?

I’ve been in front of the

camera for a little bit now.

So, I don’t forget that it’s

there, but I don’t let it

affect my performance or

my ability to interact with

other people. I just think of

it as an opportunity to help

tell stories. And I think that

whenever the drag kids get

to see us being comfortable,

it encourages them to be

comfortable as well.

You and your We’re Here

co-stars Eureka and

Shangela have put a lot of

first-timers in drag now,

while helping several

others glow up. Maybe

someday, some of these

performers you’ve fostered

will go on to become

Drag Race contestants

themselves. That would be

a crazy, full-circle moment!

It’d be exciting. The queens

from Drag Race come from

all walks of life. I mean, some

of them come FROM Drag

Race. They watch the show

and they love it. I’m one of

the [lifelong fans] who watch

the show; I watched Season

One. I loved it so much, and

I auditioned for the show.

Years later, I got on. So, yeah.

I think that’d be really cool.

Regarding Drag Race:

There have been several

New York girls on all

the seasons for several

years now. But on this

upcoming 14th season, we

only have one–the lovely

and amazing Jasmine

Kennedie! Do you think

show producers or the fan

base got tired of New York

girls or have we burned

through most of our big

talent (as if), or have

other city scenes just

stepped it up?

I don’t think it’s that

calculated. The queens

who are on the show

aren’t [necessarily] the

best drag queens in

America. It just means

they’re the best ones for

this particular season.

They work really well

together as a cast, for

whatever reason. But if

you’re not getting casted

for Drag Race, it does not

mean that you are not a

good drag queen. It just

means you just weren’t

right for this season. That’s

all it means. I had to tell

myself that–I auditioned

four times.

New York City has received

a lot of love for RuPaul’s

Drag Race. And I think

it’d be silly to assume that

RuPaul Drag Race has a

vendetta against New York

City. How many

winners came from

New York City?

You have me,

Bianca, Sasha,

Aquaria. I

mean, New

York is

doing

really well

on Drag Race.

Jasmine is gonna slay, though.

And she’s super nice!

I don’t know Miss Kennedie like

that, but I’m sure she’s wonderful.

I’m sure she’s a fantastic, standup

gal. But I’ve never had the

pleasure of meeting her. So best

of luck to her! And I’m sure she’s

got a city rooting for her; it was

just really nice to be on Drag

Race and have your city root for

you. I’ve got to say that, especially

when it happens to be New York

City. But you don’t have to be

nice to do good on Drag Race, lol!

Being nice is no reason to win.

It’s more of a reason to win Miss

Congeniality,

but go off,

lol!

Kizha Carr, you can

breathe easy…I’m

not going to

steal your gig

as a bearded

queen,

honey, lol!

Thanks,

Bob. See

you on the

30th!

Let’s talk

about

the GLAM Awards. You’ve

co-hosted the GLAMs a few

times, with Bianca, Brita and

Peppermint. But on Sunday,

January 30th, you’ll be coming

back to New York to host the

23rd GLAMs presentation solo.

Yeah, I guess I’ve never hosted

alone before. This would be a

first for me!

What’s so appealing about

hosting the show? You’re a very

busy person who now lives on

the opposite coast, but you’re

flying back to do this.

There are people who believed

in me and really have been there

for me, from way before I was

famous. And [GLAMs creator

and producer] Cherry Jubilee

has always believed in me [and

has] always been there for me.

It is a pleasure for me to come

back to town and host the GLAM

Awards.

Anything else coming up that

the children should know

about?

I’m going on tour pretty soon,

in January. Shaving the beard,

so come see! By the time you all

see me at the GLAM Awards,

the beard will be gone. I’ll just be

some regular old drag queen.

BOUDOIR LEFLEUR

Our reigning GLAM winner for Entertainer of the

Year reflects on a year of drag witchcraft, the super

success of her coven the Assassins, and (maybe)

passing the torch to a new Entertainer this year.

Interview >>>

Hello, my witch! How were

the holidays for you?

Another season in the NYC

nightlife? This year, the new

variant made everything semiwild

at best.

The Assassins, aka the drag

coven you and Kimmi Moore

created that now includes

Kamilla Kockman and Nick

Gaga, have taken over the

universe. What would you say

the Assassins’ “brand” of drag

is these days?

We are dance-heavy, stomp the

yard, no frills, old school fun, in

leather, lace, chains, and very

few rhinestones.

And what is it like being a

sisterhood of four? Might

there be more girls in the

coven someday?

We are lucky to have this little

family. Like all families, we

have our ups and downs, but

it’s all about balance, and we

have found a great balance

between our very different

personalities. For now, I

think four is plenty.

In your opinion, what

makes a “good” drag

queen?

Sondheim wrote in Sunday

in the Park with George,

“Anything you do, let it come

from you, then it will be

new, give us more to see.”

No matter what the skill set,

originality is what makes

drag exciting.

You’re with Jacklynn Hyde

at Hardware early Saturday

nights. The dynamic duo of

Boudoir and Kimmi have

shows together Tuesdays at

Pieces and Wednesdays at

Hardware. And on Fridays,

all four Assassins slay at

Playhouse. Do you all have a

favorite group number?

My personal favorite is our

“Little Mix Mix”, a production

number we often open our

Playhouse show with.

Speaking of Little Mix, all the

Assassins are nominated for

“Best Video” in the GLAM

Awards this year, thanks

to your tribute to “Sweet

Melody.” What was it like

making that video?

It was cold! The floor was

hard! Showbiz is grueling!

And I would do it again in a

heartbeat!

And I love that promo you all

shot, driving in that car on a

desert road. Where was that

and what’s the story behind

that shoot?

We shot that in Vegas! Well,

we rented a 1960-something

vintage Mustang and drove out

to the desert and shot for about

five hours on location during

our recent mini vacation.

At the last live GLAM Awards,

you won Entertainer of

the Year and Best Dance

Performer. You and Kimmi

also won Best Group/Duo

together. And you performed

on the Sony Hall stage. What

was that like?

I love Sony Hall! It’s nice once

in a while to get out of a bar and

onto a nice, big, juicy stage.

The GLAMs return to Sony

Hall on Jan 30th, hosted by

Bob the Drag Queen. Besides

Best Video, the Assassins are

up for Best Group. You are

once again nominated for

Entertainer of the Year, and

you and Kimmi are now both

up for Best Dance Performer

as well. It’s likely to be

another great night for The

Assassins.

If Kimmi beats me, I’ll be elated!

She’s definitely deserving and

one of the best dancers I’ve

ever been onstage with. I’m

excited to wear a gown, see

who gets what, and be with the

Assassins family.

What else is coming up for

you all?

We’ve got a few surprises in the

works for 2022, and our new

Haus Instagram:

@_assassinsnyc_

And finally...do you have New

Years resolutions?

Never.

On Point With:

JACKIE HUBA

The founder of Drag Out the Vote

and Fiercely You Entertainment is

co-producing the GLAMs this year…

TEDx Talker and marketing guru

Jackie Huba!

Interview >>>

Jackie, hello! You often speak about how

you’re inspired to be powerful and selfconfident

by drag queens. Can you tell us

a bit about this inspiration and how you’ve

come to know so many amazing queens

over the years?

I had long known about drag and RuPaul, but

when Season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race aired

in 2012, it really fueled my drag obsession.

I started going to all of the local drag shows

in Austin (where I lived) and San Antonio,

meeting the local queens and the Drag

Racers who came to perform. I even started

doing drag as the fabulous Lady Trinity. I

decided to write a book about how people,

especially women, could build a confident and

fierce persona for use in everyday life, based

on the psychology of how drag queens do it.

The book is called Fiercely You: Be Fabulous

and Confident By Thinking Like a Drag

Queen and came out in 2016.

You’re president of Fiercely You

Entertainment, which sees you managing

entertainers, including big name drag

queens.

I’m so honored to be working with some of

New York’s finest–Brita Filter, Lagoona Bloo,

Novaczar–as well as Cynthia Lee Fontaine,

and queens from the new Queen Of The

Universe television show, including breakout

American Idol star Ada Vox.

Another organization you manage is Drag

Out The Vote, which promotes voter

registration and awareness of voters’ rights

across the country, using drag queens as

messengers and educators.

Most of my life, I have never been politically

active, aside from voting every four years. But

after the 2016 election, when I realized that

100 million people didn’t vote and one out of

five LGBTQ+ people were not registered to

vote, I knew I had to get active and try to do

something big to change this. In 2020, even

with the pandemic happening, we recruited

303 drag artist ambassadors in 43 states,

contacted over half a million voters through

our digital drag text banks, and created over

one billion online impressions about voting

with our digital events and activations.

You’re joining forces with Cherry Jubilee

to produce the 23rd annual GLAM Awards

(January 30st at Sony Hall, hosted by Bob

the Drag Queen), which honors the best

of New York City nightlife every year. I

understand that there will now be two very

important, brand new GLAM categories

that will honor humanitarian excellence in

nightlife. What can you tell us about these

new awards?

We are so excited to introduce these two

new awards this year! The Advocacy Event

of the Year Award recognizes an in-person or

virtual event that supported a social, political

or economic cause central to the community,

and the Marsha P. Johnson Award recognizes

a member of the entertainment community

who has used their platform and marshalled

resources over the past year to advocate for

social, political or economic causes. Both of

these awards are made possible by our title

sponsor, Impulse Group NYC, and we thank

them so much for their support.

Looking forward to seeing who wins these

groundbreaking honors and to seeing you

at the end of the month, Jackie!

On Point With:

JEFF EASON

Queer New York nightlife’s most prolific

and trusted event photographer, “Get

Out’s” very own GLAM nominated Jeff

Eason, has seen it all…and thanks to his

quick draw with a camera, so have we!

Interview >>>

Hello, Jeff. How was your

New Year’s weekend?

I just got back from visiting

family for Christmas. For

New Year’s Eve, I worked

for Voss Events at Hudson

Yards. It was a fabulous night

starting with dinner and a

jazz band and moving on to

a holiday-themed variety

show starring the legendary

Shequida. Then there were

drinks and dancing, leading

up to the countdown to

midnight, ending with a show

and DJ set by RuPaul’s Drag

Race winner Aquaria. So

needless to say, it was a fun

night.

That does sound fun!

Where are you from

originally…and was

photography always a part

of your life?

I’m from Detroit,

Michigan. I’ve always loved

photography since

I was young. I

took my father’s

camera to school

when I was in

third grade and

photographed

my friends on the

playground. That’s

when I realized

how cool it was to

capture a moment

on film and have a

visual memory to

share with others.

Can you describe

what was going on in New

York nightlife when you

started shooting it?

There were definitely less

venues then, so the events

felt bigger. There were fewer

performers, so every one

of them felt like a celebrity.

There were so many crazy,

fun parties and bars that are

no longer around, that were

happening every day of the

week. Some of my favorite

places to go were Boys

Room, the Slide, the Park, B

Bar, Hiro, the Hose, Crobar.

It’s been nice to see the

community grow and become

more mainstream over time.

Now, there are so many more

venues for people to enjoy

and new performers are

popping up constantly.

How fun is it to work with

Get Out Magazine editor

Mike Todd and company

and to see your shots

printed on their pages?

Mike and the magazine are

great. It has been an honor

to work with him over the

years. It’s nice to see how

the magazine has changed

and evolved as different

contributors have left their

marks. One thing I’m really

excited about is that you have

come aboard. You’ve been a

fountain of knowledge with

your listings on Thotyssey.

com.

Thank you. I love being

there! One annual highlight

for you and Get Out is

the GLAM Awards cover

photo shoot, which usually

features a group shot of the

prior year’s winners in all

their finery.

Yes, the GLAM Awards are

definitely a highlight for

the nightlife calendar. It’s

always nice to see people

get recognized for their

talents and contributions.

The awards are so great

to photograph because

everyone is looking their best

and the performances are

always top notch. I have been

lucky to win the award for

Best Nightlife Photographer.

See you there again soon!

So, any closing words for

the kids?

I guess I would just ask that

everyone go out and support

your local nightlife. There are

so many great venues and

there’s such wonderful talent

to experience.

Thank you, Jeff!

Catching Up With

CHERRY JUBILEE

A longtime NYC drag hostess, Cherry Jubilee is best known as the creator and

producer of nightlife’s biggest evening: the GLAM Awards! Here, we dish about

the 23rd annual GLAMs, slated for January 30th!

DESIGN BY: DAVID SERRANO

Interview

Hello, Cherry! You

must be so busy with

everything right now!

I would say so. But

things are coming along

nicely. It’s a very exciting

time. And after a year of

lockdown, I’m super happy

to be busy.

So, online GLAM

voting just closed and I

understand

that the

response has

been one of

the largest

ever.

The largest

response

ever by far! I

was initially

worried that

the pandemic

may put a

damper on

things. But

thankfully,

that didn’t

happen. The

enthusiasm

of people in

NYC nightlife

is huge this

year, and it’s

definitely

one of those

years where

we see a big

insurgence of new talent.

So that may be one reason.

And Brooklyn has come

out in full force like no

other year before. It’s one

of the most inclusive and

diverse years ever. I love

that!

Last year, during

lockdown, the GLAMs

went digital, honoring

nightlifers who produced

online content. That

must’ve been a huge,

unique challenge.

Digital is a completely

different animal. Putting

together a pre-recorded

broadcast is very

technically challenging…

especially when it’s your

first time. And the fact

that you’re attempting

this during a raging

pandemic is definitely a

new kind of challenge.

But it’s as important in a

digital production as it is

in a live one that you are

working with talented and

professional folks. That

makes it easier and more

enjoyable. I learned a lot

and was very happy with

the results. But I’m hoping

never to have to do it

again.

The GLAMs return to

Sony Hall as a live event

on January 30th. Is live

event producing just like

riding a bike or do you

have to relearn how to do

everything, lol?

After putting in at least

three months of work

every year for over two

decades, you can pretty

much go on automatic

pilot once that time of year

rolls around. Even after a

year off. I’ve definitely got

it down at this point. I just

jump right back on that

bike and go!

Tell us how you think the

23rd GLAM Awards show

might be different from

previous shows.

Of course, there will be

the same excitement and

sense of community. But I

expect it to be heightened

this year due to the fact

that we’ve found ourselves

more isolated due to the

pandemic. I think there will

be something extra special

about all of us coming

together and celebrating

achievements in a year that

has been so challenging.

Everyone has worked so hard

and not only survived but

thrived!

There are too many

categories to discuss,

including two new ones.

But I do wanna discuss

Entertainer of the Year,

which is kind of the big one.

What do you think it takes

for a performer to win this

award?

Yes, it’s the big one! Firstly,

I believe you’ve had to

have worked your ass off.

And then, that work has

to have been exemplary.

And every year, there is

always an incredible group

of nominees. This year is no

different.

Bob the Drag Queen will be

hosting the show solo this

year for the first time. How

do you think she’ll do?

To be honest, I’m nervous

as hell. It’s a big risk. Lol! Of

course, I’m kidding. Hosting

the Glam Awards is like being

Ringmaster for a nearly

three-hour circus. Not an

easy task. You’re not just

trying to keep the audience’s

attention for those three

hours, but you have to be

wildly entertaining as well.

And this isn’t your typical

audience. It’s filled

with some of the most

seasoned entertainers

in NYC who know talent.

But Jackie Beat has done

it solo. Bianca Del Rio

has done it solo. And I

put Bob right up there

with those two comedic

geniuses. With her razorsharp

wit and immense

talent, I’m completely

confident she will do an

amazing job.

Finally: What will it take

for us to bribe you to

Read full interview on Thotyssey.com | Follow @cherryjubileenyc

win the categories we’re

nominated in?

I would never! But I may

make an exception for

some of those go-go

dancer nominees. We

might be able to work

something out.
