FBR SPECIAL REPORT
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
PATRICK LEWIS
Clean Air Lawn Care
Boston, MA
Franchise owner since August 2020
What were you doing prior to being a
franchise owner?
I was working as a foreman in landscaping and
lawn maintenance. I have been working outside
my entire life and in this industry since my teens.
I worked at a dozen companies obtaining a
variety of skills. I now apply these to the business
model Clean Air Lawn Care has developed, and
the combination has proven very effective.
What were you looking for in franchising that
you were not getting from your previous career?
I was looking for freedom.
At ATAX, we
know what it takes
to build a business
from the ground up and
face challenges head-on.
Because of our dedication to serving
our customers, we’ve grown to over 60
locations and expanding rapidly; and
you could be our next franchisee.
To us, franchising is not about
following rules; it's about
upholding standards.
What convinced you that this was the right
brand for you?
The environment. The environment needs this
right now, and the potential customer base is
growing rapidly every day. This is a right brand
for the times we live in right now.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
If you’re looking for the franchise opportunity
with an assigned bubble growing of potential
clients, this is it. If you’re looking for a franchise
opportunity where the headquarters feels like
family, this is it. If you’re looking for a franchise
opportunity where you will see guaranteed
growth and endless assistance in that endeavor,
this is it. Franchising with Clean Air Lawn Care has
been the best decision I’ve made in my career.
Melanie Sweet opened her Cruise
Justin Langston, a young professional in
Andy Hackett used to specialize in corporate
digital marketing sales but wanted to
shift into a role that would allow him to build
long-lasting customer relationships. Sixteen
years later, he and his father now own six
TeamLogic IT locations in Greater Boston.
And then there’s the story of Danielle
as an opportunity to best employ their
military backgrounds in civilian life while
building a better future for their family.
Danielle, who served 16 years in the Army,
and her husband, Johnny, who served
20 years in the Marine Corps, opened a
better than anyone that not all franchises are
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
DEE & ROB RISTER
HomeWell Care Services
Lexington, KY and Melbourne, FL
Franchise owners since March 2020
What were you doing prior to being a
franchise owner?
Having 35 years’ experience as a nurse and a
midwife, and reaching the pinnacle of her career
with a doctorate in nursing, Dee was ready to
explore the business aspect of her practice. I
had over 20 years’ experience in business and
an in-depth understanding of the long-term care
dilemma that a growing, aging population faces.
Our backgrounds gave us the understanding of
what families face as their loved ones age and
need support.
What were you looking for in franchising that
you were not getting from your previous career?
We were looking for the satisfaction of making a
genuine difference in the lives of other people.
Now, I go home every day from our office
knowing that our entire organization has helped
families in our community to live better. That is
a powerful feeling. It’s also powerful to know
we have created jobs and given other people
opportunities that didn’t exist before. Finally, we
were looking to be our own bosses, to have the
independence as business owners that neither of
us had before.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
You are paying a franchise fee and royalty fee
for a reason. You are buying a system. Do not
try to reinvent the wheel, just improve it as you
can. HomeWell has the processes and programs
in place. Simply plug yourself into it and, as Tom
Brady would say, “Let’s go!”
And here’s more encouraging news for
those shopping for the right franchise to
purchase:
• 88% of franchise owners “Enjoy being
part of their franchise organizations”
• 85% “Respect their franchisor”
• 80% “Would Recommend their
franchise to others”
And here’s the exciting part. For those of
you who are looking to make your wealthearning
dreams come true, the average
annual pre-tax income for franchise owners
on our list of the Top 200 Franchises of 2022
is an impressive $118,792.* Of course, like any
other new business, it takes time for franchise
owners to become profitable. But if you have
the financial means to get through the startup
phase and follow the playbook of your awardwinning
franchise, you have a good chance to
earn a six-figure salary.
Business ownership certainly is not for
everyone and building a successful franchise
business requires hard work. But for those
of you who do your homework to understand
all that is required to be a franchise owner and
select wisely from our list of Top 200 Franchises,
it could very well turn out to be the best professional
decision you’ll ever make.
“It’s everything that I dreamed of, and my
wife tells me I’m a very lucky man that I get
to do what I love,” said Alex Gallego, a Soccer
Shots franchisee in Syosset, NY.
“I still have that glow when I’m driving to
work in the morning,” said Lori Schubring, a
Wild Birds Unlimited franchise store owner
in Wausau, WI.
“This was always something we wanted,
owning our own business,” Danielle Miranda
said about purchasing a FASTSIGNS franchise
with her husband after serving a combined 36
years in the military. “We couldn’t be happier
with our decision.”
If you’re shopping for a franchise be sure
FEATURED FRANCHISEE
MICHAEL LALLY
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK
Louisville, Lexington, Erlanger, KY;
Cincinnati, OH; Philadelphia, PA;
West Hartford & New Haven, CT
Franchise owner since 2004
What were you doing prior to being
a franchise owner?
Out of college, I worked in the chemical industry
(with a distributor and then manufacturer)
for about 10 years. Taking a huge change of
direction, I worked in the securities business,
renovated homes, and wrote a novel over the
following five years. The variety of work and
jobs helped me embrace change and accept
uncertainty.
What were you looking for in franchising that
you were not getting from your previous career?
Physical labor has always suited me, and I found
that I deeply respected the people who joined
our team and worked their butts off day after day.
What convinced you that this was the right
brand for you?
Moving is very challenging work and
unappreciated by many people. I respect most
those people who take on the least glamorous
and most difficult tasks. It is gratifying to help
others and to work on a team that appreciates
you and encourages professional growth.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
Before you dive into a franchise system, be
honest with yourself about your values and how
you’re wired. If you believe the fit is a good one,
dive in and never look back.
SATISFACTION MATTERS
With thousands of different franchises available today, it’s hard to know which are potentially
good investments, and which should be avoided. There are many factors to consider when
investing in a franchise, but one of the most important is the satisfaction of current
franchise owners.
Each year, we survey thousands of franchise owners to find the companies that are truly
the best of the best. We ask the questions everyone wants to know:
• Do you enjoy operating the business?
• Are you getting the training and support you need?
• Are you making the money you expected?
• And most important... Would you recommend this franchise to others?
HOW WE SELECT THE TOP FRANCHISES
STEP 1: Invite
We invite all franchise companies based in North America
with 10 or more franchise owners to participate in our
research at no cost.
STEP 2: Survey
We contact all franchisees in the franchise companies
that choose to participate and invite them to answer a
33-question satisfaction survey covering eight key areas,
including: financial opportunity, training & support,
leadership, and core values.
STEP 4: Score
The FSI score is used to benchmark each company’s
franchisee satisfaction level against over 1,100
franchise brands representing tens of thousands
of franchisees and determine their ranking
among other participating companies.
STEP 5: Award
We identify the brands that exceed
the benchmark and recognize them
with a Top Franchise award.
STEP 3: Analyze
We analyze the responses from the franchisees and
use a weighted scale to determine an overall Franchisee
Satisfaction Index (FSI) score that ranges from 0-100. Other
factors considered in the weighting are the percentage of
franchisees that participate in the survey, the age of the
survey and the size of the franchise system.
IS FRANCHISING RIGHT FOR ME?
Here are 5 really good reasons to invest in a franchise this year
“After years of working for others, I’m ready to strike out on my own.”
“I really like the idea of owning my own business.”
“I’m ready to be my own boss.”
“I want to control my own financial future and stop living paycheck to paycheck.”
There is plenty of motivation for
entering small business ownership. If
you have the entrepreneurial drive,
and want to reduce your risks by aligning
yourself with an established brand, then
buying a franchise is an excellent option. The
Top 200 Franchises featured in this guide are a
great place to start your journey.
But first, you should ask yourself “Is franchising
right for me?” Here are our top five
reasons to buy a franchise:
1. You see the opportunity in a marketplace.
If you know that customers are
demanding a product or service in your
marketplace, that demand could very well
signal a solid business opportunity.
2. You enjoy new challenges. Business
ownership isn’t for those who have a hard
time weathering storms. As a franchise
owner, you’ll oversee operations and finances
along with a lot of the marketing and human
resources—most likely all by yourself in the
early going. Franchising demands you wear
many hats and can handle all the challenges
that come with it.
3. You are a hard worker. One of the myths
of franchise ownership is it’s easy. Truth is
franchising—like all small business ownership—is
hard work. But it can also be incredibly
rewarding, and lucrative, if done right.
4. You excel at building relationships and
customer service. No matter what kind of
franchise you decide to invest in, you’ll likely
need to devote much of your time and energy
to business development and marketing of
your business. How well you handle this end
of your business will have a direct result on
your overall success.
5. You have available financial resources.
Small business financing can be challenging.
Having cash on hand helps, and many
new owners rely on it to fund their businesses.
Other popular financing resources include
tapping into 401K funds, borrowing
from family and friends, Small Business
Administration loans, and lines of credit.
Be sure to read our story about funding
options (see P. 32).
5 REASONS NOT TO BUY A FRANCHISE
It’s easy to fantasize how great it would be to
call your own shots—particularly if you’re
unhappy in your current job. Likewise, starting
a business because you hope to cash in
quickly or make someone else happy aren’t
good reasons to ditch your 9 to 5 job. Here are
five bad reasons for starting a business:
1. It’s more appealing than your current
job. When you aren’t happy with your boss or
salary, it’s tempting to look for any way out.
FBR SPECIAL REPORT
Insight & Advice From Award-Winning Brands
Top Franchise Lash Lounge offers four types of eyelash
extensions, eyelash lifts, eyelash tinting, brow tinting,
brow threading and microblading.
Truth is, owning your own business and running
a franchise takes a lot of energy, dedication,
and an investment of time and money.
2. You want to answer to yourself. If you
don’t like taking direction from your boss now,
how would you feel about receiving feedback
from your franchisor, employees, customers,
and suppliers? As a franchise owner, you need
to be prepared to answer to a variety of people.
3. You see a way to get rich quickly. It can
be discouraging to wait for pay raises, but it
can be even more discouraging to wait many
months to begin to turn a profit with your new
franchise. Most new businesses take time to
grow before the owner can start taking money
out of the business. The question is, do you
have the patience and liquidity to survive the
startup phase?
4. You want to work fewer hours. Your
dream of unlimited vacations will be cut short
when you quickly realize that your customers
and employees rely on you to keep the franchise
running—particularly in its early stages.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to make sure things
are running smoothly.
5. You dislike being given business goals.
Franchisors will set sales levels within your franchise
agreement that you’ll need to meet to
maintain your good standing with the brand. If
you’re unable to meet these sales levels, you run
the risk of your franchisor deciding to not renew
your franchise contract when the time comes.
Franchise Business Review asked executives from our Best in Category
Brands of 2022 to provide insight on what they look for in top candidates
and to offer advice for those considering whether to take the plunge into
franchising.
What do you look for in franchise candidates?
“We’re looking for proactive sales-building, most often, a C-level executive or a
VP of sales. We’re looking for people in our business that want to be engaged
in the community.”
— FASTSIGNS Chief Development Officer Mark Jameson
“You need to be a well-rounded individual. That means you have to have good
communication skills. We are in the customer service industry as much as we
are in the technology industry. You have to be wanting and willing to interact
with other business owners and network to support the brand in the local
market. You also need to have solid financial acumen, good leadership skills
and solid values.”
— TeamLogicIT President Dan Shapero
“The large majority of our franchisees don’t come from the automotive industry.
We’re looking for people that are great leaders, want to take care of their
people, and want to make an impact on those people in the community that
they’re a part of.”
— Christian Brothers President Donnie Carr
What advice do you have for franchise candidates?
“Find something you’re passionate about. Find an industry that you really think
you can get behind and that gives you a sense of waking up every day and
having purpose.”
— NextHome CEO James Dwiggins
“We encourage candidates to talk to as many franchisees in our system as
possible. There’s an important reason for that, from building camaraderie with
a network of franchisees but also asking them what they love about working
within the system.”
— TWO MEN AND A TRUCK President Randy Shacka
“Guiding your future is really a compilation of knowing where you’ve been,
who you are, and being able to goal-set to where you want to go, regardless
of the sector. If you’ve got passion to do this, I believe franchising is the place
to do it with a group of people that are like minded, that have already done it,
have been successful.”
— Visiting Angels Director Dave Ritterling
NOT ALL SMALL BUSINESSES
ARE CREATED EQUAL
Once you’ve determined that you want to
invest in a franchise for the right reasons, you
have plenty of options. There are over 3,000
brands operating in the U.S. today and hundreds
of new ones entering the market each
year. First, you can choose what sector you
want to enter, and whether you prefer to offer
a product or a service. Then, you have other
factors to consider. Do you prefer to run your
business from home, or do you need to lease
or purchase space?
By investing in a franchise, you buy into
an existing brand and business model that
comes with a proven track record. You’ll also
get access to a training program, vendors, and
corporate support. And you’ll benefit from
being part of a network of franchisees doing
the same job in different locations.
If you’re a tenacious person with a strong
vision and a desire to delight customers,
franchise ownership might be right for you.
Find out why The Glass Guru is becoming one
of the most recognized franchise brands in
home services, and why we continue to set
records during these uncertain times.
K
What were you doing prior to being
a franchise owner?
Having held many leadership positions in the
nuclear industry this gave us a solid foundation
on how to form and lead a team to a successful
outcome. Also, the nuclear industry follows rigid
procedures and processes with no room for error.
The franchise is also a process that you conform
to and follow to be successful.
What are the most critical skills that you feel
are needed to be successful?
Patience. Leadership. Empathy. Attention to
detail. Gratitude. Starting a business takes time
and you have to be patient and make the right
and wrong decisions to learn and grow.
What were you looking for in franchising
that you were not getting from your previous
career?
Fun. Independence.
What convinced you that this was the right
brand for you?
The food. The corporate staff. And knowing our
market here and how well we knew this brand
would do in this area.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
Talk to (franchise owners). Understand
the training process in and out. Keep your
expectations low for the first year. Be patient.
Your employees are the key—value them, show
up (be present), show them how much you
appreciate them. They will make or break you.
MITCH RICHEY
The Glass Guru
North Indianapolis, IN
Franchise owner since 2010
Can you share a bit about your background?
I was working in window sales and management
and also billboard advertising, so I felt I knew the
business and was fully prepared to do this.
What are the most critical skills that you feel
are needed to be successful?
Employee development. Even before I opened
my The Glass Guru business, I had a lot of
experience in hiring and training employees.
What were you looking for in franchising that
you were not getting from your previous career?
Freedom. I can work the hours I want to work
and I make enough money now to take the trips
I want to take. I don’t have to answer to anyone
now but myself, and it’s worked out pretty well
for me.
How did you discover your franchise brand?
My best friend opened a Glass Guru in Indy
South and I saw the success he was having so
I jumped on the opportunity to open another
franchise in Indy North. The whole thing took
about six months, from start to finish.
What convinced you that this was the right
brand for you?
This a recession-proof business and a great
low-cost alternative for customers.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
Listen to corporate. They know a lot more
than you about what works and what doesn’t.
They’ve been there and done that. Follow their
recommendations.
MATT KOSTY
Wild Birds Unlimited
Fayetteville & Camillus, NY
Franchise owner since August 2017
What were you doing prior to being a
franchise owner?
I am a Fortune 500 dropout! I was a VP of HR
for the western division of an integrated health
care organization. After that, I was the Director of
Operations for a closely-held family business in
Syracuse, NY. Having a background in operations,
finance and human resources allows me to look
at the business holistically.
What are the most critical skills that you feel
are needed to be successful?
Personnel management, listening, and leading
by example. I was fortunate enough to have
those skills when I purchased the franchise. The
franchise has helped me to hone those skills
relative to the overall mission of bringing people
and nature together with excellence.
What were you looking for in franchising that
you were not getting from your previous career?
Freedom, quality of life, and the ability to set
my own course.
What convinced you that this was the right
brand for you?
The people, alignment, and the opportunity. The
one factor that put it over the top for me was joy.
This is a joyful hobby.
What advice do you have for prospective
franchise buyers?
Do your research. Talk to current franchisees.
Visit the locations. Make sure the people running
the franchise are good people who work to make
you successful.
Just like buying a home, buying a franchise is a major investment. It’s advised that you consult with a franchise attorney as well as an accountant when analyzing
your franchise investment options.
WHERE TO GO FOR
FRANCHISE FINANCING
The good news is there are several options to pick from
It’s never too early to think about how
you’re going to finance your new
franchise business. The good news is you
have several options. But in the beginning
stages of entrepreneurship, it can be confusing
to sort it all out. That’s where a trusted finance
partner can help.
When exploring financing options, you’ll
want a lender that has experience with franchise
funding. They will be able to walk you
through which financing options work best
for you, your current situation, and your
needs. Here are the most common options for
financing your new franchise business.
THE FRANCHISOR
Some franchisors offer financial assistance
to new franchisees or special groups such as
veterans, women, or minorities. For instance,
certain brands may offer to waive or discount
the franchise fees, offer a loan based on simple
interest with no principal, or offer deferred
payments for a period of time. Others will
help you connect with outside lenders to get
funding. This information can be found in
Item 10 of the company’s Franchise Disclosure
Document (FDD). When speaking with
franchise companies, ask them to clarify any
financing options they offer or third-party
financing partners they may work with.
THE SMALL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
SBA Loans are one of the most common
forms of financing and allow many small
businesses owners to get up and running,
have the cash flow and access to capital that
they need. These loans—up to $5 million—are
guaranteed by the Small Business Administration
(SBA) and lent by banks. Interest rates on
these loans will fluctuate, but the actual rate is
subject to SBA maximums, which are tied to
the prime rate. There are several types of SBA
loans, with the most common one being the
7(a) program.
Low-doc SBA Loans are an alternative
option for those searching for lower amounts
of capital, $150,000 or less. These loans offer
you the same benefits as SBA Loans with a
shorter turn-time.
Franchise Business Review encourages you
to talk your local bank about the SBA Loan
options they offer, so you can make an
informed decision on what works best for you.
RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS
Using a program called Rollovers as Business
Start Up (ROBS), you can invest up to 100% of
your retirement funds into a franchise without
taxes, penalties or a loan. To qualify for
ROBS you must have at least $50k in eligible
retirement accounts such as an IRA, 401(k),
or 403(b). Your retirement funds can be combined
with a spouse’s, partner’s or traditional
business loans.
MUTUAL FUNDS OR OTHER SECURITIES
A security-backed loan enables you to take
a loan using a financial portfolio, such as a
mutual fund, as collateral. There are several
potential advantages to doing so. First, you can
leave your portfolio in place, which enables it
to grow. Second, because the loan is backed
by your portfolio’s value, the interest charged
will be lower than for an unsecured loan. It is
important to note that the risk of borrowing
against the value of your securities is that if
your investments fall in value, the money
borrowed will emphasize your losses.
SECURED LOANS
You’re more likely to qualify for a loan when
you secure it with a mortgage on your home or
other asset. When banks offer secured loans,
they also typically require a certain percentage
down, typically around 20% to 30%. In
other words, they won’t fund 100% of your
purchase; they want to ensure you’re able to
contribute as well.
UNSECURED LOANS
You don’t need collateral to qualify for an
unsecured loan, which can happen in just
three weeks. They are a great option if you
need a fast funding solution. If you have a
high credit score, banks and credit unions
are good sources for unsecured loans. If your
credit score is lower than the required range
for banks and credit unions, consider a thirdparty
lender. Though they reduce some risk
for borrowers, they usually come with higher
interest rates and shorter payoff terms.
Choosing between secured and unsecured
loans often comes down to what your available
options are and whether you can save money
overall with one choice or another. For many,
a lifetime of credit and loans will include both
secured and unsecured debt. The trick is figuring
out which type to use.
PERSONAL LOANS
Loans from friends and family are also very
common. These can come in the form of
gifts or more formally as loans with specific
payment schedules. Loans from friends and
family often come with greater flexibility
but the terms should be formalized to avoid
damaging personal relationships. Speak with
your accountant on how to best structure this
type of loan before taking any money from
friends and family.
HOW TO APPLY FOR
FRANCHISE FINANCING
No matter where you go for franchise financing,
you’ll likely need to produce certain documents
in order to prove your creditworthiness
as a borrower. Be ready to provide your lender
the following information:
• Credit history—this tells lenders how
reliable you will be as a borrower based on
your past borrowing history.
• Personal financial statements—lenders
will want to know that you are in good financial
health before they hand over a lump sum
of money. They will want to see your current
bills, debts, tax returns, and loans as well as
your savings, income and assets.
• Business plan—Lenders will want to see
your business plan so that they can understand
how you will be using the money they are
lending you—and determine if your business
TIP 1
Just like buying a home, buying
a franchise is a major investment.
It’s advised that you consult with
a franchise attorney as well as an
accountant when analyzing your
franchise investment options.
TIP 2
When speaking with franchise
companies, ask them to clarify
any financing options they offer
or third-party financing partners
they may work with.
TIP 3
No matter where you go for
franchise financing, you’ll
likely need to produce certain
documents in order to prove your
creditworthiness as a borrower. Be
ready to provide your lender your
credit history, personal financial
statements, and business plan.
is a strong investment. If you are buying a
franchise with a well-known brand name and
a proven track record of success, lenders will
be more likely to grant you funding. But keep
in mind that most lenders will require a credit
card check before issuing any loans.
Brand Recognition
Starting a business from scratch takes time and
money. Franchises, on the other hand, provide
well-known services and products with
established customer bases already built in.
Be Your Own Boss
Franchise owners are in business for
themselves, but not by themselves. That’s
the advantage of being part of a large and
successful franchise system.
Proven Business Model
Franchising is a multi-billion dollar global industry,
and it shows no signs of slowing down. Why?
Because it’s proven to be a very successful
business model.
Proven Playbook
Let’s face it, starting any business is risky.
That being said, the risk is lower when
opening a franchise because you’re buying
into a time-tested business system.
ADVANTAGES
OF FRANCHISING
Buying Power
A network of franchises has the opportunity
to purchase goods at a deep discount by
buying in bulk. The franchisor can use the
size of its network to negotiate deals that
every franchisee benefits from. A lower cost
of goods lowers the overall operation costs
of the franchise.
Business Assistance
Franchises will share financial metrics, best
practices, and other proprietary information
to help you operate a more successful
business. FBR’s top-rated brands are
recognized for the outstanding support they
provide their franchisees.
Bigger Profits
In general, franchises see higher profits than
independently established businesses. Most
franchises have recognizable brands that
bring customers in droves. This often results
in higher profits for franchisees.
