our beliefs
We believe in home, that it should be a place of comfort,
rest, and security. We believe families are sacred—the ones
we inherit and the ones we create. We believe in seeking
balance between productivity and rest and learning to find
contentment in both. We believe in human kindness and
the power of working together to accomplish big goals. We
believe in courage, in moving past comfort zones, and honestly
seeking knowledge from mistakes. We believe that each
day is a gift and miracles are visible if only we look for them.
COVID-19
update
Cambridge Retirement Living continues to remain
Our restrictions too, remain the same, under the
guidance of the PA Department of Human Services,
But we are so thankful for the resilience and kindness
of our residents and their families as we broach
new ways to reunite everyone as safely as possible.
We so enjoyed our fall and winter events and look forward
to sharing new springtime memories with you soon.
We will continue to closely monitor the requirements
illuminate.
Dear Reader,
My family celebrated Christmas early this year. Or – let me
put it another way – we did a Christmas thing much earlier than
we usually do. We look forward to the holidays as a much needed
light at the end of the year.
The day after black Friday we accepted an invitation to see
A Christmas Carol: the Musical in a small town up the river from
where we live.
My wife is an amazing actress. She has tons of interesting/
talented friends who work on stage and on TV.
A friend of hers, Noel, is an extraordinary dancer. I’ve seen
her work at professional theatres up and
down the east coast, doing everything
from acrobatic ballet to show girl chorus
line ups.
She’s a joyful person, always the
first to dance at any party the moment
music comes on.
So when she invited us to see her
show – this curious “musical” version
of the Dickens winter classic – we
immediately said yes without really
having any idea of what we were in for.
Truthfully, we were willing to
see just about anything after the long
pandemic break.
We love live shows. The community
theatre element was especially alluring.
Community theatre shows are stocked
with local people, typically amateurs or weekend players.
Even professional shows with professional actors can unravel
in unpredictable ways.
When the pond is stocked with weekend players a world of
mishap can open with the curtain.
Who doesn’t love a good mishap?
But things went smoothly. The costumes were strong. We
saw dozens of dads with their kids upon the stage, singing hearts
out and clearly sharing moments neither would ever forget.
We watched Ebenezer Scrooge and Bob Cratchitt and Tiny
Tim and the whole pageant unfold before us with wonderful
songs and music.
And we watched Noel dance her heart out as the ghost of
Christmas future – the spirit Scrooge feared most of all.
Later, outside the theatre, we caught up with Noel, who told
us she’d taken the gig without pay.
My jaw dropped. Noel and her husband are newlyweds. Her
husband isn’t working because he’s studying twelve hours a day to
become a lawyer.
I was sure they needed every dime – especially around
Christmas.
And yet Noel had chosen to dance each night as an act of
charity. Not only for performances,
but she had faced hours of rehearsal,
hours away from her family, with no
expectation of anything in return.
She had shared her talent with
people without any thought of herself
at all. Just as the ghosts of Christmas
revealed the way forward for our favorite
changed Miser, she illuminated the age
old path to the real gifts of the season.
It was a generous gift. If the
show itself hadn’t brought me into the
Christmas Spirit, this news surely did.
I was so moved not only by
Scrooge’s Christmas Eve change of heart
but also by Noel’s selflessness that I
ordered a dozen copies of A Christmas
Carol by Charles Dickens to give away
as Christmas gifts.
As the days grew shorter, and Christmas neared I thought
often about Noel and her act of charity. I am still thinking of it and
I’m making plans for how I might follow Noel’s example next year.
This issue of Cambridge Times is dedicated to all the people
in our communities, like Noel, who go the extra mile to make the
holidays brighter for others.
I hope in the midst of another difficult year you and your
family find comfort and warmth in these pages. May they aid you
in appreciating all of the bright good things that light the winter
path ahead.
And may God always bless us, everyone.
meet vickie.
Our new Executive Director of Cambridge Creekside
Vickie DeZardo hails from Monessen, PA and started working with
seniors over eight years ago! Once she started working with residents
she absolutely loved it. The best part about working with seniors?
That they become part of her family. "They just want to have
your attention, and to know someone cares for, and loves them".
Her favorite thing to do for them is to make sure that they know
Cambridge is their home, and that she'll be there to make them feel
safe, comfortable and happy during their stay. Vickie is the proud
owner of a sweet Chihuahua named Squeaks! Welcome Vickie!
on their faces? The most rewarding thing ever. Aimee is another
Chihuahua owner! Her little pup is named Cupcake. When she's not
BATTLING
THE
WINTER
BLUES
Seasonal Depression or just the Gloomy
Weather got you down? Well we've got some
tips just for you!
12
Do you find yourself feeling down
when the weather gets cold and gray,
especially when the excitement of the
holidays end? Some may just call this
the winter blues, while others may
be diagnosed with Seasonal Affective
Disorder. SAD is a type of depression
that comes and goes with the cold
season and affects an estimated 10
million Americans, with women four
times more likely to be diagnosed
with it than men. So whether you’re
battling SAD or just experiencing
sadness, we’ve got some tips and
tricks to help you tackle those winter
blues!
1. Keep active!
It’s hard to stay motivated while those fuzzy
sheets keep calling your name, especially when
it’s cold and gloomy outside. But if you can tackle
a half hour walk even a few times a week, you
are literally taking steps to reduce that feeling of
anxiety and depression!
2. Eat healthy.
Now that we’ve all enjoyed Nanna’s cookies,
and heaps of Papa’s roasted potatoes, it’s time
to focus on what you’re putting in to your body.
Nutritionists recommend getting foods rich in
antioxidants and vitamins. So take your apple a
day and drink plenty of water these cold months!
3. Vitamins!
If you feel like you’re not getting enough from
your diet, it may be wise to consider taking some
supplements. Studies consistently show that
vitamin D status drops in the wintertime, and
they’re at their lowest all the way into March!
So an extra boost of Vitamin D or Omega-3 could
help you stay healthy and happy. But talk to your
Dr. before starting any supplements!
4. Get enough sleep!
It may seem like a given, but even outside of the
winter months most adults are not getting enough
sleep! So be sure you’re staying rested to take on
the day. It’s recommended that you sleep “cool”
so you can always try adjusting your thermostat
between 60-68 degrees!
5. Try a Happy Light!
These helpful little lights can cost anywhere from
$15-$300. The Mayo Clinic says Light therapy
can start to improve symptoms of SAD or gloom
within just a few days!
6. Do what you love.
Focus on doing something you’re excited about
each day. Go back to indoor things you used to
love, like reading, making puzzles, baking, or
just staying in touch with your friends. With the
prevalence of Zoom, you can let your community
continue in these cold months to ease feelings of
loneliness!

WINTER
R E S P I T E
STAYS
With more restrictions being lifted, and life in Covid growing more manageable, many
families are eager to beat the winter blues with a vacation of their dreams. But many
families have parents and grandparents that are unable to travel. Luckily, Cambridge
Retirement Living has the solution for everyone’s Cabin Fever. Every single Cambridge
Community is now offering Respite Stays. These restorative stays last anywhere
from 7-90 days and offer an all-inclusive look at life in Cambridge while providing
an important opportunity to give caregivers a break and provide a chance for loved
ones to recharge in a safe and loving atmosphere. Your loved one will receive the
full amenities of being a permanent resident, including meals, movie theatres, crafts,
activities, TV, wifi, and more!
Respite Stay: Three Points
1. Improve Cognitive Function
Social activities keep seniors sharp and mentally engaged
2. Improve Physical Health
Rest and Relaxation can be as beneficial as connecting
with others
3. Boost Immune System
Studies show seniors who stay engaged with others, and
life around them, have higher levels of immune system
function.
If you’re looking to beat the cabin fever, consider a Respite Stay that spans
the whole of the difficult winter season. No snow shoveling at Mom’s, no
worrying about Dad on the icy driveway. They’ll be safe and cared for around
the clock by professional and caring hands.
IRENE OTOLINSKY
When we approached Cambridge
Ebensburg’s activities director extraordinaire,
Carol, about writing our resident feature on a
resident at Ebensburg, she knew right away who
she wanted us to feature.
Irene (Renny) Otolinsky grew up in
Conemaugh, PA. For those unfamiliar, Conemaugh
is in a section of Johnstown PA, just about 20
minutes from our very own Cambridge Ebensburg.
Renny grew up, running about Conemaugh with
her three sisters, dreaming of who she would
become.
Irene went to school in Conemaugh and
attended church with her family at Sacred Heart
Catholic Church. Church has always been very
important to Renny, and she participated in mass,
the rosary, communion, and anything she could to
be involved and help out. Ask Renny, and ye shall
receive!
Her helpful spirit and heartwarming smile
turned heads everywhere she went. And she
eventually turned the head of Walter Otolinksy.
18

"The best advice
I could give...just
comfort and cuddle
those little
babies that know
your touch!"
The two were married and Irene bore
four wonderful children, Walt, Vanessa, Tim, and
Marla. Though her husband is no longer with us,
her children live on as shining examples of Irene’s
love and care.
Irene loves her children more than life
itself, but her own babies were not the first she
cared for. As a young person Irene moved to New
York City to train as a nurse. She found her calling.
All the years of service and care had led to the
perfect career for our Renny. Her first job as an
RN was at the Neil Cliff Manor, but her hometown
called her name.
After New York, Renny returned to PA, and
worked at the Conemaugh Hospital. She stayed in
nursing for 38 years in the Neonatal Intensive Care
Unit (NICU), Regional Intensive Care Neonatal
(RICN), and ICU!
It wasn’t until 1988 that she finally retired.
But Irene was so loved that to this day, her photo
hangs on the wall in ICU at the Conemaugh
hospital. Irene is a legend in her own right, and
we are blown away by her dedication to precious
infant lives.
When we asked her about her love of
working in the NICU with so many children in
need of help she had this to say, “The best advice
I could give you…is that you don’t have to listen
to me at all! Just comfort and cuddle those little
babies that know your touch!”
Today Renny enjoys many things at
Cambridge Ebensburg. She loves her TV, cross
stitching, coffee, sweets, bingo, and her lovely
boyfriend Chuck. Renny also loves our Cambridge
Ebensburg photo booth, and her favorite thing
is when activities director Carol will dress her up
beyond recognition to take fun photos!
Cambridge Ebensburg is proud to host
such a kind and independent soul. Anyone who
meets Renny knows their life is better for it!
Thank you for sharing your story, Irene and
thank you to Irene’s family for their wonderful
photos and further information.
stunning transformations yet! Cambridge
Riverview underwent a ONE MILLION
DOLLAR renovation to better the lives of
our residents and community members
of Cambridge Riverview! Fireplaces,
floors, bathrooms, living quarters, dining
rooms and more were updated, renovated
and made to shine! So we wanted to
share a sample of some of our favorite
transformations, and new designs at
Cambridge Riverview!
Some of our favorite before and after shots this holiday
season.
TOP: Our beautifully redesigned fireplace!
BOTTOM: Our gorgeous bright common area!
Our dining room was once much
darker. Now with fresh lighting, new
floors, and bright and airy furniture,
residents can enjoy meals in style!
The indoor front porch is an easy resident
favorite! The perfect spot to sit
and chat, especially when decorated
for the holidays.
Just one of our grand new bathrooms
being completely gutted and put back
together again with beautiful modern
tile, walls, furniture and fixtures.
