ART NEWS<br />

Abu Dhabi to welcome two<br />

new museums<br />

Mohamed Khalifa Al<br />

Mubarak, Chairman<br />

of Abu Dhabi’s<br />

Department of Culture<br />

and Tourism (DCT),<br />

announced that <strong>the</strong> emirate plans<br />

to create two new museums <strong>in</strong><br />

addition to <strong>the</strong> Frank Gehry–<br />

designed Guggenheim Abu<br />

Dhabi and <strong>the</strong> Norman Fosterdesigned<br />

Zayed National Museum,<br />

both of which are slated for<br />

completion by 2025.<br />

Though he offered few details, Al<br />

Mubarak confirmed that <strong>the</strong> new<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutions were already under<br />

construction and that <strong>the</strong>y differ<br />

from two earlier planned projects,<br />

respectively designed by Tadao<br />

Ando and <strong>the</strong> late Zaha Hadid,<br />

The emirate made “a<br />

very clear and conscious<br />

decision to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong><br />

culture, and <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> culture does not just<br />

mean build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

that were orig<strong>in</strong>ally planned for <strong>the</strong><br />

Saadiyat cultural district before<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g scuttled.<br />

Al Mubarak said, <strong>the</strong> emirate<br />

made “a very clear and conscious<br />

decision to <strong>in</strong>vest <strong>in</strong> culture, and<br />

<strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> culture does not just<br />

mean build<strong>in</strong>gs. We’re <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure, both soft and<br />

hard—whe<strong>the</strong>r it’s <strong>in</strong>stitutions, music<br />

programs, or school curricula.”<br />

The new museums will jo<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> already completed Jean<br />

Nouvel–designed Louvre Abu<br />

Dhabi on Saadiyat Island. To<br />

date, construction of all three<br />

known museums—<strong>the</strong> Louvre,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Guggenheim, and <strong>the</strong> Zayed—<br />

has been fraught. However, <strong>the</strong><br />

region is poised to enjoy a global<br />

shift away from Western-centric<br />

collect<strong>in</strong>g; additionally, Abu Dhabi<br />

has worked to address its reputation<br />

as an expensive and socially<br />

conservative emirate that does not<br />

freely offer visas to artists.<br />

Art as a form of<br />

communication<br />

Every organism survives<br />

because <strong>the</strong>y can<br />

communicate and express<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own or o<strong>the</strong>r species.<br />

Communication through art can<br />

be performed <strong>in</strong> many forms that<br />

don’t depend on words. Artists<br />

communicate by factors you might<br />

not notice at first, like <strong>the</strong> choice<br />

of colors, composition, or how <strong>the</strong><br />

forms are ei<strong>the</strong>r put toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

or split.<br />

The coord<strong>in</strong>ation of movement<br />

used <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> art, and <strong>the</strong><br />

colors toge<strong>the</strong>r become curative<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> process of creation.<br />

The <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g use of <strong>the</strong> textures,<br />

colors, and materials and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g manipulation to br<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

one's <strong>in</strong>ner thoughts and emotions<br />

help <strong>the</strong> person to overcome <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>hibitions that <strong>the</strong>y might hold <strong>in</strong><br />

express<strong>in</strong>g through o<strong>the</strong>r mediums.<br />

From ancient times, people have<br />

used images to communicate.<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>k of early cave art or Egyptian<br />

hieroglyphics - visual art can<br />

explore concepts or ideas without<br />

requir<strong>in</strong>g written statements.<br />

Channeliz<strong>in</strong>g one’s expression<br />

through colors, materials, or texts,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> liberty to choose from <strong>the</strong>se<br />

channels helps <strong>the</strong> artist to convey<br />

better. It also gives imag<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

a free rule, lett<strong>in</strong>g you feel <strong>the</strong><br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g world <strong>in</strong> different ways<br />

and <strong>the</strong>n show how a person feels<br />

about it without depend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on words.<br />

Artists have made draw<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs, sculptures, and many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r art objects to challenge<br />

assumptions, support causes, and<br />

explore deep personal questions.<br />

Art exam<strong>in</strong>es broad ideas or<br />

than o<strong>the</strong>rs, and often reflects on<br />

Artists<br />

communicate by<br />

factors you might<br />

not notice at first,<br />

like <strong>the</strong> choice of<br />

colors, composition,<br />

or how <strong>the</strong> forms<br />

are ei<strong>the</strong>r put<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r or split.<br />

<strong>the</strong> period <strong>in</strong> which it was formed as<br />

a statement of support or a reaction<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st someth<strong>in</strong>g. Art <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

provides a medium to express,<br />

act<strong>in</strong>g as a bridge between<br />

Earth Art<br />

Movement<br />

Earth art is made directly <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> landscape by sculpt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> land itself or by mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

structures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> landscape<br />

with natural materials such<br />

as rocks or twigs. Earth art, also<br />

known as land art, was part of <strong>the</strong><br />

wider conceptual art movement<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1960s and 1970s. It was<br />

established by a group of pioneer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

artists who <strong>in</strong>vestigated natural<br />

sites, alternative modes of artistic<br />

production, and ways to circumvent<br />

<strong>the</strong> commercial art system.<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> objective beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

this movement was to show <strong>the</strong><br />

outgrowth of Conceptualism and<br />

M<strong>in</strong>imalism and <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>the</strong> environmental movement. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallations were placed <strong>in</strong> various<br />

sett<strong>in</strong>gs so as to <strong>in</strong>teract with nature<br />

<strong>in</strong> different ways. This outgrowth and<br />

<strong>the</strong> determ<strong>in</strong>ation of man’s relation<br />

The <strong>in</strong>stallations were<br />

placed <strong>in</strong> various sett<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

so as to <strong>in</strong>teract with<br />

nature <strong>in</strong> different ways.<br />

This outgrowth and <strong>the</strong><br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ation of man’s<br />

relation with nature<br />

<strong>in</strong>spired <strong>the</strong> creativity of<br />

<strong>the</strong> artists whose creations<br />

were released from <strong>the</strong><br />

boundaries of galleries and<br />

museums to emphasize <strong>the</strong><br />

commodification of art.<br />

with nature <strong>in</strong>spired <strong>the</strong> creativity<br />

of <strong>the</strong> artists whose creations were<br />

released from <strong>the</strong> boundaries of<br />

galleries and museums to emphasize<br />

<strong>the</strong> commodification of art.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r important feature<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> Land Art<br />

Movement was <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

photography to prove <strong>the</strong> existence<br />

of <strong>the</strong> massive land works. These<br />

photographs were showcased<br />

by <strong>the</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g artists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

galleries as proof of <strong>the</strong>ir affiliation<br />

to <strong>the</strong> movement. Land art was<br />

usually documented <strong>in</strong> artworks<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g photographs and maps which<br />

<strong>the</strong> artist could exhibit <strong>in</strong> a gallery.<br />

Land artists also made art <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gallery by br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> material from<br />

<strong>the</strong> landscape and us<strong>in</strong>g it to create<br />

<strong>in</strong>stallations.<br />

The most famous land art work<br />

is Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty of<br />

1970, an earthwork built out <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

Great Salt Lake <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA. Though<br />

some artists such as Smithson used<br />

mechanical earth-mov<strong>in</strong>g equipment<br />

to make <strong>the</strong>ir artworks, o<strong>the</strong>r artists<br />

made m<strong>in</strong>imal and temporary<br />

<strong>in</strong>terventions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> landscape such<br />

as Richard Long who simply walked<br />

up and down until he had made a<br />

mark <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth.<br />

Channell<strong>in</strong>g Mohamed Abla’s unique optimism<br />

<strong>the</strong> aim of this presentation is to capture<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ations and unite generations through<br />

<strong>the</strong> artist’s mesmeric world. The body of work<br />

comprises a selection of mixed media collages,<br />

and heal<strong>in</strong>g properties of plant life, particularly<br />

<strong>the</strong> cactus. Abla dislodges <strong>the</strong> cactus from its<br />

Embroidery art<br />

By Cécile Davidovici<br />

58<br />

<strong>January</strong> <strong>2022</strong><br />

I am very <strong>in</strong>spired by<br />

<strong>the</strong> past, everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

that relates to<br />

<strong>in</strong>nocence and<br />

nostalgia, says Cécile<br />

Davidovici<br />

- Exclusive to <strong>Magzoid</strong><br />

Cécile Davidovici is an<br />

embroidery artist from<br />

Paris. She had a creative<br />

childhood and studied<br />

drama, film, and <strong>the</strong>atre,<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g on to write and direct movies<br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k between <strong>in</strong>nocence<br />

and illusion. After f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g drama<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ater studies, Cécile set to<br />

review filmmak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> New York town<br />

as her next step. While <strong>in</strong> NYC, <strong>the</strong><br />

movies that she wrote and directed<br />

have been displayed at festivals<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> world, some receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

multiple awards.<br />

She discovered embroidery after<br />

los<strong>in</strong>g her mo<strong>the</strong>r and began to<br />

stitch images of her fad<strong>in</strong>g childhood<br />

memories. Still work<strong>in</strong>g to her <strong>the</strong>mes<br />

of <strong>in</strong>nocence and illusion, she<br />

wanted to capture and consider <strong>the</strong><br />

hazy moments from her past, that<br />

she had glimpsed <strong>in</strong> old family home<br />

movie videotapes. Davidovici has<br />

been able to adapt this new medium<br />

to permit herself to anchor her art<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> moment. Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

medium of textiles her own, twiddl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with threads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manner a pa<strong>in</strong>ter<br />

would with pa<strong>in</strong>t, she is carv<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

her own niche with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> complex<br />

world of contemporary art.<br />

Portraits of a constant dream is a<br />

series of fem<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e portraits, entirely<br />

hand embroidered. They portray a<br />

close-up of one face that becomes<br />

two, with no clue on <strong>the</strong> era. The<br />

faces are nearly identical, however,<br />

one is often bigger, more present,<br />

hid<strong>in</strong>g half of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The meticulous <strong>in</strong>tertw<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

threads that depict sk<strong>in</strong> creates a<br />

new form of transparency that unveils<br />

<strong>the</strong> person beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> face. These<br />

women stare at us but <strong>in</strong> reality,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are look<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves,<br />

question<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir contradictions,<br />

reveal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir doubts. Their<br />

openness and vulnerability even<br />

allow <strong>the</strong> audience to see a part<br />

of <strong>the</strong>mselves when look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong><br />

Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> medium of<br />

textiles her own, twiddl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with threads <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> manner<br />

a pa<strong>in</strong>ter would with<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>t, she is carv<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

her own niche with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> complex world of<br />

contemporary art.<br />

subjects. Davidovici places her<br />

own unique sp<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> medium of<br />

textiles and by layer<strong>in</strong>g threads as<br />

a pa<strong>in</strong>ter would with a pa<strong>in</strong>tbrush,<br />

she re-<strong>in</strong>terprets <strong>the</strong> face differently,<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g a new shape to <strong>the</strong>se faces,<br />

open<strong>in</strong>g a door for a re<strong>in</strong>vention, a<br />

new sk<strong>in</strong>, a new story.<br />

The first<br />

Sculpture Garden at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Museum of Modern Art<br />

was planned <strong>in</strong> just one night.<br />

The current space, dedicated to<br />

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, was <strong>in</strong>itially<br />

designed <strong>in</strong> 1953 and is now <strong>the</strong> heart of<br />

<strong>the</strong> museum. One of <strong>the</strong> many <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sculptures is an actual Paris Subway<br />

entrance gate. This 1900 Art Nouveau<br />

style cast iron arch, designed<br />

by Hector Guimard offers a<br />

charm<strong>in</strong>g accent to <strong>the</strong><br />

park walkways.<br />

Although no one<br />

knows for certa<strong>in</strong> how and<br />

why red and green became so<br />

closely associated with Christmas,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are a few popular <strong>the</strong>ories. Many<br />

Christians believe red and green were<br />

<strong>in</strong>spired by <strong>the</strong> life of Jesus, whose birth<br />

Christians celebrate on Christmas. Green,<br />

for example, represents <strong>the</strong> eternal life<br />

of Jesus Christ, just as evergreen trees<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> green <strong>the</strong> whole w<strong>in</strong>ter long.<br />

Likewise, red represents <strong>the</strong> blood<br />

shed by Jesus Christ dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his crucifixion.<br />

Sapphires and rubies<br />

are <strong>the</strong> same stone. They're<br />

both made of <strong>the</strong> same m<strong>in</strong>eral:<br />

corundum. The change <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stone's<br />

color is due to trace m<strong>in</strong>erals that<br />

each stone conta<strong>in</strong>s. Titanium and<br />

iron both result <strong>in</strong> a blue color, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

birth to sapphires. A ruby's red color<br />

comes from trace amounts of<br />

chromium <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stone.<br />

Nike is a United States corporation<br />

with headquarters <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

County <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> state of Oregon. In<br />

1964 <strong>the</strong> company was founded<br />

by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman.<br />

The company was <strong>in</strong>itially known as<br />

Blue Ribbon Sports but switched to<br />

<strong>the</strong> present Nike name <strong>in</strong> 1971. The<br />

Nike logo is, <strong>in</strong> some way, <strong>the</strong> best<br />

type of emotional communication.<br />

Through its slogan “Just Do It”<br />

and visual elements, <strong>the</strong> company<br />

has endeavored to promote<br />

<strong>the</strong> psychological impact of its<br />

products.<br />

The Nike swoosh symbol is one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> world’s simplest but most<br />

effective brand<strong>in</strong>g visuals. Along<br />

with athletes and sports followers,<br />

millennials like buy<strong>in</strong>g products<br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Nike logo. The swoosh<br />

image has a life of its own as it’s<br />

already patented and extremely<br />

popular. The Nike logo was<br />

designed by Carolyn Davidson, a<br />

graphic design student attend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Portland State University, where<br />

Phil Knight, one of Nike’s founders,<br />

was an account<strong>in</strong>g professor. For<br />

her troubles, Carolyn Davidson was<br />

paid just $35! The swoosh symbol<br />

is <strong>the</strong> shape of a w<strong>in</strong>g of Nike, <strong>the</strong><br />

Greek Goddess of Victory. So,<br />

Carolyn Davidson had <strong>the</strong> shape<br />

of <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d, thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />

goddess.<br />

The FedEx company was founded<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1971 as a packag<strong>in</strong>g delivery<br />

startup. Over several decades,<br />

it has developed <strong>in</strong>to a powerful<br />

logistics brand and trendsetter.<br />

The company’s award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

logo became one of <strong>the</strong> factors<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d-blow<strong>in</strong>g success<br />

of FedEx.<br />

The FedEx logo is a worldwide<br />

classic example of deliver<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

strong message with negative<br />

spaces. Consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> growth<br />

and reach of FedEx, <strong>the</strong> logo<br />

design was centered around a few<br />

traits: service, speed, precision,<br />

and reliability. If you look carefully<br />

between <strong>the</strong> “E” and “X” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

FedEx logotype, you’ll notice a<br />

small arrow stick<strong>in</strong>g out, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> right. The designer himself<br />

loved us<strong>in</strong>g negative spaces. So,<br />

while design<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> FedEx logo’s<br />

current variant, he <strong>in</strong>corporated a<br />

secret arrow and kept nearly 40%<br />

of <strong>the</strong> blank space white. Among<br />

different color comb<strong>in</strong>ations, <strong>the</strong><br />

company opted for <strong>the</strong> mix of<br />

orange and violet that stands for<br />

prosperity and prestige.<br />
