ECA REVIEW HANNA/CORONATION/STETTLER, AB January 13'22 9
Special Areas busy
with 2022 plans
Submitted
“Looking back on 2021, we
faced some pretty big challenges:
from disruptive
public health measures to
supply chain issues to
extreme weather conditions,”
said Jordon
Christianson, Special Areas
Board Chair.
“2021 was a year that
tested us all. Although we
may not know what 2022
will bring, I believe it will be
full of once-in-a-generation
opportunity. I am excited to
see all our hard work of the
past few years turning into
new possibilities for the
whole region.”
Although it may be early
in the new year, Special
Areas is already busy getting
key pieces moving for
2022.
First up in the new year is
updating appointments to
the Special Areas Board.
There are three locally
elected Advisory Council
members who serve on the
Board, each representing
one of the Special Areas.
In 2022, Board members
will be remaining the same,
with Brad Slorstad representing
Special Area No. 2,
Daryl Swenson representing
Special Area No. 3, and
Doug Noble representing
Special Area No. 4.
Another major item for
administration to tackle is
the 2022 budget and road
program. The Board is planning
a return to
AGRICULTURE
pre-pandemic operations
that focuses on protecting
municipal infrastructure
investments while delivering
critical services and
programs to ratepayers.
By returning to pre-pandemic
spending levels in
2022, administration will be
completing critical capital
expenditures which had
been deferred over the past
two years.
In January, local road
committees will be
reviewing the proposed 2022
road program and providing
feedback for the spring
meeting of Advisory
Council.
Finally, the proposed tax
recovery land sale policy is
expected to be finalized
early in 2022.
Once this is completed,
more information on the
draft sale policy will be
shared with Special Areas
residents so they can share
their thoughts on the draft
policy.
The proposed tax
recovery land sale policy
supports the stability and
security of agricultural producers
in the region. It
would be the fourth sale
policy held by the Special
Areas if approved.
For more information on
your upcoming local road
committee meeting or to
Council meetings, contact
your local district office.
“Recycling” contest winner arrested
for trafficking stolen copper wire
Submitted
The Southern Alberta Crime
Reduction Unit (SACRU) were
investigating copper wire thefts
from oil lease sites in the Three
Hills and Hanna, Alta. area
Thurs. Dec. 16, 2021.
SACRU observed a male and
female both known to police,
enter an oil lease site east of
Three Hills around noon on
Dec. 16, 2021.
When a covert police vehicle
approached, both subjects fled
back to their vehicle and left the
lease site.
SACRU attended the lease site
and confirmed copper wires
had been cut and removed from
the site, with some wire being
left behind. The damage to the
lease site was approximately
$7,000.
RCMP
At approximately 2:30 p.m.,
Three Hills RCMP attempted a
traffic stop with the suspects
who were travelling in on Hwy.
9 near Beiseker, Alta. with the
intention of arresting the two
individuals.
The female suspect who was
driving pulled over, however
when the officer approached,
the suspect vehicle sped off.
On Dec. 17, 2021, SACRU
arrested Tyree Ewing (23) of
Three Hills and Wanda
Charlton (51) of Hanna at a wire
recycling business in the area of
43 Avenue S.E., and Hastings
Crescent S.E., in Calgary,
attempting to sell copper wire.
The investigation revealed
Ewing was a recent contest
winner at the business where
the contestant’s name would be
entered in a draw for hockey
tickets for bringing in 100 lbs. of
insulated wire.
Ewing and Charlton are
jointly charged with theft not
exceeding $5,000, flight from
police, trafficking property
obtained by crime, mischief
exceeding $5,000 and possession
of break in tools.
Ewing is further charged
with failing to comply with a
release order, unlawfully possessing
methamphetamine and
unlawfully possessing fentanyl.
Both Ewing and Charlton
were released from custody and
are next scheduled to appear in
Drumheller Provincial Court
on Feb. 18, 2022.
