Destiny
Church
vows to
hold more
services
• By Chris Barclay
DESTINY CHURCH has
pledged to continue holding
a Sunday service in Cranmer
Square in spite of moves to
prevent the controversial
religious organisation and an
anti-Government off-shoot
congregating in the green space.
Police and city council staff
met on Tuesday to debate how to
stop the church and the Freedom
and Rights Coalition group –
established by Destiny leader
Brian Tamaki – using Cranmer
Square following complaints by
residents.
The council billed the Freedom
and Rights Coalition $14,117.47
this week to cover costs associated
with three protests in
Cranmer Square and at other city
locations during November and
December.
Another bill will be lodged
following last Saturday’s protest
In Hagley Park and a march on
Riccarton Rd.
City council staff have reportedly
contacted Destiny Church
senior pastor Derek Tait regarding
the services and protests.
Tait, who was unaware that
any council bylaws had been
breached, told The Star he had
not sighted the original invoice.
THE POLICE investigation
into the non-accidental death
of a three-month-old baby in
say it may be “some time” before
further information can be
released.
Close call as nail boards
pose hidden danger
• By Susan Sandys
SHARP NAIL boards were
found partially submerged
under shingle in a stream at a
popular walking spot near the
Waimakariri River.
James Owen was walking his
friend’s two dogs at a ford at
the end of Intake Rd on Sunday
morning when he scraped
his toe on “something sharp”
after taking off his sandals and
following the dogs along the
water’s edge.
He investigated, and then
pulled up a wooden board with
several long nails in it.
The board had been on the
bottom with the sharp ends
of the nails pointing upwards.
Nearby he found a similar
board.
He was shocked at the find,
and grateful the dogs had not
stood on them.
He also felt lucky that his own
foot had missed pressing down
on the sharp nail by millimetres.
“If I had stood on that with
force that nail was going into my
foot,” he said.
Owen immediately removed
the boards, fearing others
visiting the area could stand on
them.
He said it appeared they
may have been deliberately
submerged to puncture the tyres
December 31 with serious
injuries. Police confirmed the
infant had died on January 2.
A homicide investigation is
under way. To date no one has
been charged in relation to the
death.
A police spokesperson said
the name of the baby would not
be released at this stage.
As for the homicide
of four-wheel-drive vehicles
or quad bikes. However, they
were an obvious risk to people
and pets at the spot, which is
regularly visited by walkers,
picnickers and cyclists.
“Imagine if a child had
stood on it, because it’s a popular
spot.”
Owen posted about his find
on the West Melton Community
Page on Facebook.
Members were appalled,
calling the act nasty and sick,
and feared what would happen
to a child if they stood on one of
the nails.
Owen said he reported it to the
police.
Senior Sergeant Anna Lloyd
said the incident was concerning.
Police had advised Sicon, which
undertook river maintenance.
There had not been any
previous incidents reported.
“Police want to know about
any further occurrences of this
occurring,” she said.
NASTY: James Owen
narrowly avoided injury
when his toe scraped
up against one of these
nails, in a wooden board
submerged at the side of a
Waimakariri River stream.
Canterbury’s traditional
Impact of sea
level rise survey
The city council has created
a survey for the Lyttelton
Harbour and Port Levy area
communities it hopes will help
inform long-term planning as
part of the council’s Coastal
Hazards Adaptation Planning
programme. Low-lying inland
and coastal communities
will be increasingly impacted
by intense storm events
and long-term sea level rise,
leading to more frequent
and severe coastal flooding,
coastal erosion, and rising
groundwater. The focus area of
the project is between Lyttelton
and Port Levy. The survey aims
to help understand the risk
tolerance of communities in
the event of prolonged loss of
road access due to the impacts
of sea level rise.
City’s luxury housing market tipped
• By Catherine Smith
WHILE THE average property
value in Christchurch is less than
half of what it is in Auckland,
the city’s luxury housing market
is catching up, with agents
reporting that a $10 million sale
is not far off.
The city’s top two sales for
2021 were in Merivale, where the
average house price has jumped
$390,000 (32 per cent) in the last
12 months to $1.584 million.
Harcourts
agent Cameron
Bailey, who
closed the
$6.7 million
deal for an
award-winning
waterfront
Cameron
Bailey
house on
Desmond St –
Christchurch’s
second most expensive home in
2021 – said that it won’t be long
before buyers are shelling eightfigure
sums in the city.
“There are houses built here
that owe their owners well over
$10 million, and I think there
would be buyers. There’s a
whole market that’s opened up
around the $5 million to $8
million. Lots of people trading
up, and in the next few years
there will be a $10 million-plus
market,” he said.
“There are big houses on
PLUSH: Desmond House in Merivale was the city’s second biggest sale last year. (Right) – A substantial four-bedroom
house on Waiwetu St, Fendalton, is for sale with an asking price of $4.399 million.
PHOTO (left): WARREN AND MAHONEY
substantial pieces of land, 1000
sq m or more sections, and very
high quality. When you look at
what it would cost to build today,
it gets pretty expensive.”
Bailey said there was plenty
more room for the Christchurch
market prices to keep moving,
with the latest OneRoof figures
showing the city’s average
property value had surged
$205,000 (35.5 per cent) to
$783,000 in the last 12 months.
“That gives people the real
ability to feel that they are
buying well. For Auckland
buyers, $10 million to $15
million in Christchurch
would give you the very best
house in town, compared to up
in Auckland where they’d
have to spend more than $20
million.”
Bailey’s $6.7 million sale
was topped by the $8 million
paid off market for a stylish
five-bedroom home on
Wairarapa Tce. Two multimillion-dollar
land sales in
the neighbouring suburbs of
Fendalton and Upper Riccarton
showed that developers, one for
$8 milion for a 1.3ha plot and
$7 million for a 4000 sq m site
by the river, were seeing huge
potential for sales in the city’s
top suburbs.
Williams Corporation,
which bought the 1.3ha plot
on Wharenui Rd, Upper
Riccarton, is now marketing a
52-townhouse development on
the site with prices ranging from
$579,000 to $1.23 million.
Said Bailey: “People’s appetite
for big houses and big land is
changing. They’ll go for a smaller
but cooler place in the heart of
things.”
In the upper price bracket,
Bailey is marketing a large fivebedroom
house on Waiwetu St,
Fendalton, that has an asking
price of $4.399 million. The
house includes a pool, wine
cellar, garaging for four cars on a
1463 sq m section with a stream
boundary.
“It’s a big house on big land,
nothing has been overlooked.
I’ve got families up-sizing
looking at it. You could say $4
million is a lot of money, but
there will be people out there
who think it is cheap.”
Bailey said buyers quickly do
the math on the value of the
land (in Fendalton, that’s around
$2000 per square metre) and a
build cost that could top $6000
per square metre.
“Today that size house on that
size land would cost $6 million.
It’s a good buy and saves you
three years out of your life to do
the build,” he said.
for $10 million sale
“People have got the appetite
for big houses, even as it’s cooling
in the heartland prices. There are
a lot of $2 million to $4 million
sales. The economy is still strong
and buyers are out there.”
Bayleys agent Adam Heazlewood,
who brokered the $7 million
sale of the 4000 sq m plot on
Fendalton Rd, said that while the
city averaged around 10 sales a
year worth over $5 million, there
was room for more sales in the
upper price brackets.
“There are plenty of buyers
in the high end. The biggest
limitation is that the sellers have
nowhere to go so aren’t listing.
“However, by the end of last
year, we were seeing supply start
to creep up. There will be more
$3m to $4m properties, even the
odd one or two for $6 million to
$8 million this year.”
He estimated that the high-end
buyers were as much locals as
out-of-towners, although Auckland
buyers are surprised at what
their $3 million from the sale of a
“fairly ordinary” Auckland house
would buy them in Christchurch.
“But I’m still surprised at how
much local wealth there is. And
it’s in that higher bracket that
people really see the value,” he
said.
“Out-of-towners do tell me that
the housing quality here is higher
on average. The major benefit of
QUALITY: A stylish house on Innes Rd, Merivale, sold for
$3.485 million just before Christmas.
the post-earthquake rebuilds is
that houses have been majorly
refurbished or rebuilt. There’s
great architecture in the city,” he
said.
“And here, you’re not paying
$8000 to $10,000 per square
metre for a quality build, you get
a great house for $5000 to $7000
per square metre, and land costs
are a lot less too.
“There’ll be a lot more opportunities
for buyers this year.”
In one of the last Christchurch
auctions of the year, three bidders
fought to secure a stylish
near-new four-bedroom home
on a sprawling 1821 sq m site on
Innes Rd, in Merivale.
Bayleys agent Wendy Miles,
who marketed the property with
Angela Webb and Charlotte Heaslip,
said bidding was heated.
“These post-earthquake builds
on a huge level section attract all
the interest,” she said.
“The two under-bidders are
now looking for $3.5 million
properties. They have pretty
specific needs when there
spending that sort of money, but
the demand is there and they
don’t have to have sold first.”
Smith retreated to the lounge,
grabbed Doozer by the collar and
fled through the front door as
intense heat blew out windows.
“I left my phone inside and the
most painful part was not being
able to ring Darcy to tell him the
house was on fire. I felt helpless
because I couldn’t do anything.
“I sat out on the road in my undies
and watched the house burn
down. I was a bit dumbfounded
about what actually happened.”
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand investigators told Lutton
a laptop charger was the likely
cause.
“I don’t know how they’ve managed
to narrow it down to that,
but the charger was plugged in
and has obviously ignited or done
something that’s started the fire
Smith retrieved his mobile but
clothing, his birth certificate and
other identification documents,
a wallet, and about $5000 in car
parts for his Nissan Silvia.
Fortunately someone gave him
a shirt as firefighters extinguished
the blaze. A mate then provided a
bag of clothing. Lutton, part owner
of the nearby Bairds Collision
by a neighbour and appreciated
the efforts of emergency services,
his insurance company and the
local community who rallied.
“The fire brigade were wicked
Omicron is raging
through workplaces
around the world.
Susan Sandys looks at
contingency plans here
to keep supply chains
and health services
running
ROAD FREIGHT operators
trying to ward off a food supply
chain crisis are calling for
reconsideration of the Covid-19
home isolation period.
Transporting
New
Zealand chief
executive Nick
Leggett said
New Zealand
only needed to
look at what
was happening
across the
Tasman to see
what could eventuate here.
Australian supermarket shoppers
are facing lockdown deja vu
as they grapple with bare shelves.
Essential workers, including up
to half of the country’s truck
drivers, are off work as Omicron
forces them into isolation due
to being unwell or having tested
positive to Covid-19. Some states
are reducing the seven-day
mandatory isolation period for
essential workers.
SUPPLY CRISIS: Transport operators are lobbying Government to ensure food and
medical supplies continue to be delivered.
Leggett has written a letter this
week to the Minister of Transport
Michael Wood, asking what the
home isolation period will be for
essential workers, such as truck
drivers needing to deliver crucial
food and medical equipment.
In New Zealand, the isolation
period for fully vaccinated Covid-19
cases in the community is
currently at least 10 days, including
72 hours symptom-free.
In America, the Covid isolation
period has recently been
slashed in half from 10 to five
days, while the United Kingdom
is considering a similar move.
Leggett said planning for Omicron
was a matter of urgency,
and he hoped to meet with
Ministry of Health and Ministry
of Transport officials within the
next week.
“We want to try and get in
front of this as much as we can,
and I think the Government has
an opportunity to think about
the kind of rules it imposes once
Omicron hits us,” he said.
New Zealand already had a
truck driver shortage which had
worsened in the pandemic. It has
a worker shortage mirrored in a
wide range of industries.
“We have to think about ways
that give people the ability to
rest and isolate as much possible,
but also for when they are well
and able to get back to work as
quickly as possible so we are able
to keep the country running.”
A spokesperson for the Minister
for Covid-19 Response Chris
Hipkins said yesterday while the
10-day period remained in force,
the situation would continue
to be closely followed and was
under constant review.
Leggett said the industry also
wanted Government to consider
prioritising truck drivers for
booster shots and provide the
industry with free rapid antigen
tests.
At the same time, the organisation
is advising its members to
look at how they will maintain
essential services as high numbers
of staff fall sick.
In an advisory, it has suggested
splitting staff at larger workplaces
into two or more teams
that are kept segregated. This
was so if members of one team
have an outbreak, the other team
can continue working.
It has also suggested businesses
consider potential subcontractor
options and flexible
work hours.
Countdown director of
corporate affairs, safety and
sustainability, Kiri Hannifin
said the supermarket group was
prepared for Omicron.
“If it is a good day, then
you are likely to find me out
trimming trees or tending
the herb garden, I just love
it and always have.”
“Eating healthy really
came to the forefront for
eating healthy and looking
make life healthier. This
has led her to organic foods,
better eating habits, and
both prebiotics & probiotics.
“I began to see how lazy
impact of Omicron variant
“We’re continuing to work with
our supply chain partners to plan
for and manage any additional
pressures that come into play during
an outbreak – including onshelf
availability,” Hannifin said.
“We have safely served
millions of customers during
previous outbreaks.”
Emergency services are
also preparing.
A police spokesperson
said for operational
reasons police would not
go into specifics on what
resourcing and deployment
would look like in
an Omicron outbreak,
but the organisation was
“experienced at deploying to demand
and managing resourcing
in line with this.”
St John district operations
manager – Canterbury, Curt
Ward, said as New Zealand
moved from a pandemic to
endemic response, St John would
continue to review and adapt its
contingency plans.
“If there is Covid-19 identified
in the community, crews will
work in bubbles to limit the risk
of infection spreading across different
shift changes,” Ward said.
“We also have several other
strategies in place to lessen the
impact widespread community
infection rates might have on our
capability, including bolstering
our recruitment and training efforts
to bring on board more ambulance
officers and paramedics.”
The ambulance service is already
under pressure. Ward took
the opportunity to warn St John
was currently experiencing
a high number
of calls and there
may be a response
delay for non-urgent
situations.
Fire and Emergency
New Zealand
did not get back to
The Star by deadline.
Epidemiologist and
Michael Baker University of Otago
professor Michael
Baker told RNZ this week that he
was concerned there may have
been undetected transmission of
Omicron during the Christmas
and New Year period.
“It will take a while for people
to people to develop symptoms
if they were exposed. Everyone
should be aware of getting any
cold or flu symptoms, which is
unusual for this time of year.”
New Zealand has so far dodged
a community outbreak in spite
of high case numbers at the
border. People are urged to get
their booster shots, and take
their five to 11-year-olds along for
their first jab when the children’s
vaccination roll-out begins on
Monday.
High vaccination rates could
keep hospitalisations down
• By Susan Sandys
THE Canterbury
District Health Board
is not anticipating high
hospitalisation rates if
Omicron cases surge in the
community.
Senior responsible officer
for the Covid-19 response
Dr Helen Skinner said it was
expected that when Covid-19
became endemic this summer,
meaning when there were high
numbers of cases throughout
the region, most people would
not need hospital level-care.
“With our good vaccination
rates in Canterbury, vaccinated
people who do get breakthrough
infections will usually
have mild symptoms that can
safely be managed at home,”
Skinner said.
But the board was unable
to say yesterday by deadline
what plans it has for staffing
if nurses and other workers
become infected.
Covid-positive nurses in
Australia and the US are being
recalled to work as shortstaffed
hospitals buckle under
the outbreak.
The board has been progressively
increasing hospital
capacity for Covid-19 patients,
on top of its current ICU
capacity.
It has just received $12
million construction funding
from the Government for a
new negative pressure 12-bed
ICU ward at Christchurch
Hospital, in a vacant space
in the new Waipapa building
adjacent to the current ICU.
It follows the opening late last
month of the 32-bed Parkside
Ground Medical, which can
be used for acutely unwell
Covid-19 patients who don’t
need ICU-level care.
Church ‘absolutely
“Apparently they’ve sent it, I
said.
Tait added another service was
planned this weekend, revealing
the outdoor area was utilised
rather than the church premises on
Fitzgerald Ave because “it’s a good
opportunity to be out in the sun.”
Council infrastructure planning
and regulatory services manager
Jane Davissaid the only events
normally allowed at Cranmer
Square were commemorative, such
as Anzac Day. So these events contravened
a bylaw.
Davis said residents were
rightly concerned organisers of the
protests and church services had
been putting up temporary stages,
portable toilets and operating food
trucks without council permission.
Davis would not comment on
what proposals were discussed
with police. “We are pursuing all
avenues to minimise, or preferably
eliminate, the adverse impacts on
Cranmer Square residents.’’
Central Ward councillor Jake
McLellan was surprised the services
would continue.
“They’re absolutely breaking the
law. Like all green space it’s there to
be enjoyed by the community, it’s
not the exclusive use on a Saturday
religious services. They can get a
Covid keeps dental clinics busy
• By Chris Barclay
DAVID WALSH is typically
among the health professionals
you’d want to avoid like the plague
– but the Covid-19 pandemic has
prompted a surge in demand for
dental procedures.
The prospect of pain, or at least
discomfort, has proved no deterrent
as the city’s dentists deal with a
spike in general and cosmetic work
since lockdown restrictions have
been relaxed.
“I used to be booked (out) a week
and a half, now I’m booked solid
for five to six weeks,” said Walsh,
who operates out of Dentistry on
Merivale.
The Canadian, who has worked as
a dentist for 35 years, said business
had been constant since Christchurch
emerged from the first nationwide
lockdown in May 2020.
“It’s gone ballistic. We came
back to work and the phone hasn’t
stopped ringing.”
Walsh, who moved to New Zealand
in 2003, offered three explanations for
the busiest time of his career.
“People are more concerned
about their health, nobody can
travel and they’ve got some money
in the bank,” he said.
“The big one is three. They don’t
know if or when lockdown is going
to happen again so ‘I better bloody
get my teeth done before Jacinda
(Ardern) decides to close us down
again.”
“That’s my theory, it’s ‘circle of
life’ stuff that has resulted in people
accessing more dental work than
they would have otherwise.”
Walsh felt clients were taking
action after realising dentistry was
extremely limited during the old
alert level 4 constraints, an view
endorsed by Emilos Kotzikas.
He had a cavity filled yesterday,
18 months after the tooth started
giving him grief. It was third time
lucky after two previous appointments
were cancelled.
‘It’s gone ballistic. We came
back to work and the phone
hasn’t stopped ringing’
– David Walsh
“It’s just been bad timing with
the old shutdowns and stuff. I’m
trying to be a little proactive as opposed
to reactive,” he said.
So rather than delay a trip to
the dentist if they need a filling
done, appointments are sought
after.
“As soon as access is granted
again ‘boom’ you start dealing
with stuff you don’t want to put off
anymore,” Walsh said.
While pain relief naturally
features prominently, discretionary
income usually devoted to
international travel also underpins
a thriving industry.
Some clients are investing thousands
of dollars in botox, fillers
and facial aesthetics, cosmetic gum
surgery, teeth whitening and Invisalign,
a teeth straightening process.
“There’s a lot of optional work,
where it’s not a health issue,” Walsh
said.
“Some people are coming out
of the woodwork. They’re saying:
‘Right I’d like to get that work done
we talked about five years ago’.”
Walsh mainly deals with restorative
work using ceramics and
composites.
“If you’ve lost three teeth and
you’d like to smile again I kind of
become the linchpin for the process
for implant restoration. There’s
major overhauls and a fair bit of
cosmetic stuff, veneers and that
sort of stuff,” he said.
New Zealand Dental Association
president Dr Erin Collins agreed
the pandemic had caused demand
for consultations and treatments to
soar.
“Following lockdowns dental
practices have been busy catching
up with routine dental work such
as regular examinations, hygiene
visits and dealing with problems
such as toothaches and broken
teeth/fillings that arose during the
lockdowns,” he said.
Fortunately, Collins said supplies
of necessary products and materials
had not been compromised.
“There have been potential
shortages and increased costs of
materials but the situation has been
pretty well managed by the dental
supply companies,” he said.
FILLING A NEED: Christchurch dentists like David
Walsh, seen here filling a cavity for Emilios Kotzikas,
treatments when Covid-19 restrictions allow.
Edgecumbe, Stephen Harley,
Diane McKinnel and Judy
Philips were subsequently added
to the Wilding Park honours
board reserved for winners of
100 premier grade games.
Johns’ research was
particularly poignant for
86-year-old McKinnel and
Edgecumbe, 76, who had no
officially recorded victories.
With the
benefit of
hindsight –
and Johns’
eagle eyes
– McKinnel
was actually
the first player
to reach the
Terry Mooney
milestone
when she beat
J Clarke (Shirley) on December
15, 1979.
The Avonside legend’s first
victory was against another
Shirley opponent, A Dalley, on
November, 12 1955.
“There was very little
recognition for tennis in those
days so it was a very big surprise
when Bevan presented me with
a plaque,” said McKinnel, who
was unable to attend the awards
function.
“I can’t remember playing her
(Clarke), I didn’t have any idea it
was my 100th win.”
Elmwood veteran Edgecumbe
recorded his first win on
November 17, 1962, against Eric
Cormack and reached triple
figures by beating Sumner’s P
Dawson on January 24, 1981.
“I’m pleased to have got this
recognition. Bevan did great
work, it was a massive effort,”
Edgecumbe said.
Johns spent more than 1000
hours scouring microfilm of old
newspapers held at Turanga,
Christchurch’s central library,
after comforting Dalman.
“We had a beer instead of
a second set. He was a bit
downcast because his body was
failing him a little bit. We had a
yarn about when his body was
in better shape, the fellas he beat
(from the 1970s to 90s).
“I asked him if he was up on
the board or close. He thought
he was probably pretty close but
maybe not all of his results had
been counted.”
Johns asked if there was
any means of finding out and
Dalman, who was on about 80
wins at the time before being
NET GAINS: Canterbury tennis stalwarts Warren
Edgecumbe and Diane McKinnel earned
belated recognition for their winning exploits
thanks to the research of Bevan Johns, who
results of Tennis Canterbury’s new 100-club
members.
library archives.
The ball was in Johns’ court.
“As it happened I was on a
break between jobs,” he said, “so
I had a bit of time on my hands.”
And he needed it to comb
through thousands of editions
for the results – typically in
Monday’s sports section – before
collating a spreadsheet.
“It was probably six months of
late nights.
“I was only going to look at
Richard’s results but my partner
(Jo) said ‘If you’re going to look
up his and get him up on the
board she said you’re going to
have to go back the whole way’.
I ended up going back to 1930,”
he said.
So how are his eyes now? Is the
ball fuzzy when he plays division
one for Elmwood?
“They were burning,” he
admitted.
“There were some days I’d
spend eight hours down at the
library and not find a single
result because I was coming
towards the end and I was
looking for the missing ones.
“Warren’s was the most
exciting to find, he was on 99 for
a long time. I went through every
missing week trying to find one
more for him.
“Once I got in the flow you
stayed there. When I got home
it was onto the laptop, onto the
spreadsheet until 2,3,4 o’clock in
the morning.”
Johns, who is currently
contracting for the Department
of Internal Affairs, had always
been partial to facts and figures.
“Cricket was my thing when
I was a kid. I used to buy the
magazines and look up the
stats and records. I was always
interested in my numbers. The
calculator was my favourite
toy,” said Johns, who joined
Elmwood when he returned to
Christchurch from the capital in
2018.
Johns, who has a solitary
premier grade win on his
record, was proud to reflect on a
resounding success.
“It was a personal project
that’s had a wider impact. There’s
been a bit of division between
the guys that played in the 70s
and the guys that played in the
90s that created the (honours)
board.
“I don’t know why all the
numbers didn’t get counted. I
think it sort of righted a wrong.”
Shortage of
bus drivers
not affecting
all companies
REDUCED BUS services are
ongoing in Christchurch this
summer due to driver shortages,
but not every operator is feeling the
pinch.
Since December 6, MetroBus
has operated more than half of its
services on a Saturday timetable six
days a week.
But Ritchies is continuing to provide
a regular service on its assigned
MetroBus routes.
Director of operations Andrew
Ritchie said their Christchurch
branch did have enough drivers.
“It’s an essential service we
provide and [our drivers] have
been out there doing their job and
it’s reasonably thankless as a lot of
people don’t always treat them as
well as what they should. They do a
fantastic job,” he said.
“The pandemic did affect them of
course, but they got out there and
did their work and their bit for New
Zealand and I’m very pleased and
proud of their work.”
Environment Canterbury public
transport general manager Stewart
Gibbon said national driver shortage
had presented challenges across
the country “for some years now”.
“Our operators are reporting that
immigration and a very competitive
labour market are factors contributing
to the driver shortage across
New Zealand, and unfortunately,
Canterbury is no longer immune to
this issue,” he said.
Said Ritchie: “Immigration has
tended to provide the bus driver
fraternity quite well.”
While Ritchies had enough drivers,
they were always on the look out
for more, he said.
MetroBus has said it did not know
how long its services would be reduced,
but expected the shortage to
be a long-term issue.
Gibbon said the council and
MetroBus were working closely with
operators to restore services once
there was enough staff capacity.
Key updates will be posted on
Metro’s website and Facebook, put
in their online newsletter, and there
is on-street signage at bus stops.
Unleashed dogs posing
threat to estuary penguins
• By Kristie Boland
LITTLE BLUE penguins on the
estuary continue to be attacked
by dogs.
Two were killed near Redcliffs
in December,
but the
number is
likely to be
higher Avon-
Heathcote
Estuary Ihutai
Trust manager
Tanya
Jenkins
Tanya Jenkins
said.
She is urging
dog owners to follow the rules
and not allow their pets onto the
mudflats in the estuary where
penguins gather.
Jenkins also said dogs were
continuing to harass other
birdlife, particularly on the
Southshore side of the estuary.
Signage along the estuary
states that the mudflats are a ‘no
go’ zone for dogs but some local
residents continue to ignore the
rules, she said.
“During December another
two little blue penguins were
mauled by dogs around Redcliffs
and if these two birds were
found, there is a high chance the
numbers are much higher when
mauled birds are taken away by
the tides,” Jenkins said.
THE HISTORIC Tug Lyttelton
may move away from using
coal to a an environmentally
friendly fuel.
The Tug Lyttelton Preservation
Society is considering new
options to power the 115-yearold
boat, one of the oldest operating
steam-powered vessels in
the world.
Society president Mike Bruce
said up to 60-tonne of coal is
used a year to run the vessel.
“We’ve got to change, we
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
“Even if [birds] are not killed
by dogs, the disturbance by dogs
running on the mudflats can be
life threatening.”
Birds can only feed on the
mudflats during peak low tide
which allows for a short window
of only a few hours for them to
eat enough to last them the day.
Being disturbed by dogs can
significantly cut down this time.
“If in this short time they
are scared, chased by dogs,
it can take up to 45 minutes
before they regain the courage
to continue eating again,” said
Jenkins.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love
want to run the ship for another
100 years, we won’t do that on
coal,” he said.
But the costs of converting
from a coal to a more environmentally-friendly
option are
high.
“We are well aware we have
got to do something but we are
not self-sustainable, we can’t
fund ourselves through the
year from passenger sales so
need to go and get grants from
Rata, pub charities, the Heritage
Society and others.”
Bruce said the society is looking
into a range of options, one
of those being bio fuel.
Bio fuel is fuel that can be
produced from, or are made
up of a renewable material like
wood.
Bruce estimates the conversion
cost from coal to bio fuel
is $40,000. Double the amount
of wood needs to be used to
achieve the same amount of
energy as coal.
Another option, that could
be run in conjunction with
bio fuel, is to have an electric
pre-heater to pre-heat the
OUT OF CONTROL: Dogs
off the lead are chasing
birds and killing penguins.
dogs and have been a dog owner
since I was 12-years-old but it’s
just such a shame that some dog
owners are just not aware of the
rules or simply do not wish to
abide.”
The trust is urging local
residents to help make dog
owners aware of the rules and to
report those who ignore them to
the city council.
Plan to stop using coal on historic tug boat
boiler. This would cost another
$80,000.
Wood has less greenhouse
gas associated with it than the
average electricity greenhouse
gas footprint. If battery
powered, it will be the “oldest
vessel in the world running
the newest technology,” Bruce
said.
Whatever decision is made
will be based on the funding
available to them.
“We’ve got to get off coal, but
we’re not going to get off coal
without funding.”
Canterbury feels the heat
in hottest year on record
• By Hamish Maclean
IT WAS dry and warm across
much of Canterbury in 2021,
while Dunedin was the only
place in the country to set a coldweather
record, in what was the
hottest year in New Zealand’s
history.
The National Institute of Water
and Atmospheric Research
2021 annual climate summary
confirmed the nationwide
average temperature for 2021
(13.56 deg C) had surpassed New
Zealand’s previous hottest year
in 2016.
The year’s highest temperature
(39.4 deg C) was reached in
Ashburton on January 26.
And in spite of an overnight
low of -8.8 deg C on May 27
at Dunedin Airport, the city’s
Musselburgh station also
recorded the highest annual
average temperature (12.3 deg
C) last year since records began
there in 1947.
In March, parts of the
South Island also became
very dry as Blenheim,
Kaikoura, Culverden, Cheviot,
parts of Christchurch, Akaroa,
Oamaru, Windsor, Cromwell,
Clyde, Lauder, Alexandra,
Wanaka and Middlemarch all
recorded more than 25 “dry
days” during the month, the
report said.
Niwa forecaster and report coauthor
Nava Fedaeff said seven
of the past nine years have been
among New Zealand’s warmest.
As climate change continues
to influence the weather, coldweather
extremes were expected
to decrease, she said.
Rather than cold extremes,
Fedaeff ‘s report detailed a year
of high temperatures, long dry
spells, devastating floods and
damaging winds. From January
25 to 28, hot air from Australia
combined with westerly winds
and caused widespread record or
near-record temperatures across
eastern New Zealand.
By the end of April,
the lack of rain and low
hydro lake levels caused the
Tiwai Point aluminium smelter
to lower its consumption of
electricity.
But parts of the South Island
were also inundated with rain
last year.
At the end of May, prolonged
and heavy rain overwhelmed
Canterbury and a state of
emergency was declared across
the region.
Damage was widespread and
hundreds of residents were
evacuated, including the entire
settlement of Springfield.
Kirkwood Intermediate -
school of choice
We look forward to welcoming our new
and returning students and whānau to
our community when the 2022 school
year begins. Our learning environment
is supported by a strong focus on our
Excellence – Panekiretanga, and
Perseverance - Hiringa. Through these
‘REP’ values we develop within each
student a sense of self-worth to realise
their importance as a member of our
Casebrook community.
Our school environment is one
where students are safe and have
the confidence to take risks with their
learning. In this way the students
at Casebrook are supported and
encouraged to become self-motivated,
independent learners.
We value the partnership between
home and school. Together we will
create an environment that fosters the
feelings of pride and belonging that
comes from engaging in the wide variety
of opportunities we have on offer at
Casebrook.
Kirkwood Intermediate is a very well
resourced school where all of our
practices are based on solid educational
foundations. We have nine specialist
Technology classrooms, a safe and
vibrant community feel, and stable
professional leadership.
We are an inclusive school with mixed
ability classes, programmes to extend
everything we have, and all of our plans
for the future are designed for children
aged 10 -13 years old – our Year 7 and
8 students often called the ‘emerging
adolescent’. These wonderful children
are going through a real growth spurt:
intellectually, emotionally and physically.
The staff at Kirkwood choose to work
with these children, and recognise the
very special attributes and challenges
of this age group. High standards of
behaviour are maintained and our
children are well known for being
respectful, polite and pleasant.
Our children choose to come here after
seeing something about our school
that appeals to them, and I believe our
reputation is second to none. Come and
visit our school and see for yourself what
makes Kirkwood the great school it is.
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo
greetings to the Hornby High School
community, and a special welcome
to those of you who are new to our
community.
Welcome to Hornby High School where
our vision is to be a ‘centre of creative
excellence he puna auaha’. That means
we try to foster creativity in everything
we do: sports and science, governance
and teaching. To do that we aim to equip
students with the tools they need to be
creative, critical thinkers. Our school
whakatauki says:
Mā te huruhuru, ka rere te manu
‘Feathers enable the bird to fly’
Optimism is one of those qualities
that some have more than others. As
educators we always begin each year
with that sense of optimism about
what the year, the students, and the
community, will bring. For us that
optimism is grounded in what we have
experienced the year before, and our
plans for the year to come which reflect
those things that we can control.
For Hornby High School that sense of
optimism is well founded. In 2021 we
pushed for and experienced continuing
student success as we have evolved
our curriculum and teacher practice
to match the beautiful buildings and
facilities that we now use.
Our pastoral system reforms are nearly
complete, focussing on building strong
positive relationships between teachers
and learners. Our curriculum changes,
designed to connect learning across
subject areas to improve understanding
and engagement for learners, continue
to evolve. Our 2021 performance in
gaining a significantly greater number
of university scholarships than ever
before sets the scene for ever higher
academic expectations and aspiration,
while those seeking trades and industry
qualifications also continue to excel.
And then there is the ongoing focus on
sporting and cultural achievement which
continues to see students take their
place amongst the best. Join us in our
extraordinary journey.
Established as a Junior High School,
Chisnallwood is specifically designed to
meet the needs of students in their preadolescent
years. This design has been
carefully developed over many years
and is based on the best that has been
seen in New Zealand and Internationally.
By enrolling at this school you are
opening doorways to opportunities that
will prepare you fully for secondary and
beyond. A well-balanced mixture of
specialist and home room teaching in
this highly resourced environment will
capture your interest and attention in a
manner that will ensure your success.
The Iconic front entrance to Shirley
Intermediate School - which has
graced north parade since 1934, gave
way to the digger recently, as the long
awaited building programme began.
The bulk of that original building
has been demolished and
ground preparation is well
underway for foundation
work. The first stage of
the building programme
is the rebuild of a modern
set of classrooms and
technology centre with
a whare style feature
at the western end - in
recognition of the schools well
established bilingual class - Te
Tahu Rua Reo.
The complete project - part of the
Ministry of Education’s Christchurch
Schools Rebuild programme will see
all buildings replaced, refurbished,
or removed. There is an air of great
anticipation amongst the school
Recognised as a leader in its field,
Chisnallwood is nationally renowned
for its achievements particularly in the
areas of music, the arts, sport and all
academic endeavours. This success
is brought about by the quality of the
resources we have and the commitment
of the highly trained and dedicated
teaching staff.
Our values of Respect, Relationships,
Responsibilities and Resilience (Our 4Rs)
enable our students to fulfill our motto
which is to challenge the margins of
time and explore what is beyond.
Shirley Intermediate School
and community as they watch
developments.
Principal, Geoff Siave” said the project
fits in smoothly with other significant
changes in the school. “With 2021
seeing the biggest intake for
five years, and 2022 shaping
up with another good
intake” the school is
looking forward to other
significant changes.”
The end of another year
has also meant some staff
changes, including the
arrival of new staff eager to
continue the school’s growth.
A new uniform is being developed
with the community (for 2023) and a new
name for the school will be launched
also - following a consultative period in
2020/21.
The project to upgrade the facilities
around the two swimming pools is
underway.
Burnside
High School
Head Prefects. Left to right :
Aarya Advilkar, Dylan Blundell, Lily Burt,
Taylah Peek.
As the prefects of 2022, we can confidently say that
Burnside High School students thrive due to the
endless opportunities and support available. Our
school offers a wide range of possibilities for all
students to engage in and going into our fifth year, we
have definitely found this to be the case. Whether it be
from drama club to robotics or athletics, we have each
found an outlet for our diverse passions alongside
unlimited leadership opportunities.
Within Burnside High School there are four divisions:
North, South, West and Senior Division. These are
equivalent to house groups. Throughout the year,
students participate in interdivisional competitions to
gain points for their division. Students remain in their
form class for their core subjects. Within these form
classes, individuals are elected providing students an
opportunity to showcase their leadership abilities.
For all of our students, there is a wide support network
available. New students will receive a student planner
which has a space to keep their class timetable and
a map to help them navigate their new school along
with other key information to support their transition
into High School. Support systems at Burnside High
School are multi-layered and an emphasis is placed
on individuals and achievement. This is an important
feature of the school for many of our students.
Each individual has unique experiences here at
Burnside. Head Prefect Dylan Blundell commented “I
have found my passion in music making many friends
along the way.” Deputy Head Prefect, Taylah Peek
commented on the diversity of people at Burnside
saying that she is able to enjoy her time with different
friends in every class and this is one of her favourite
parts of being at this school. After joining Burnside,
Head Prefect Lily Burt explained that she found her
love for Musical Theatre and Drama. Similar to Lily,
Deputy Head Prefect Aarya Advilkar has found a
passion for robotics. These experiences of the 2022
Prefect Team show that Burnside is a unique school
which values the individuality of each student.
be more open but equally there are
times for some students when this is
a learning disaster. Te Aratai College
also has smaller rooms for students
who learn best in reduced, very quiet
environments, and bigger spaces for
larger student gatherings. The building
design assists staff and students to
respond to the many factors that
personalise success.
Of course, new buildings alone do
not necessarily improve education.
The relationship with the teacher - he
tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata - and
the personalisation of learning are the
key for this. However, there is also no
doubt that new, purpose-built buildings
and spaces that arise from these
community values of relationships
and personalisation contribute hugely
to student success. This is Te Aratai
BACK TO SCHOOL - 2022
Mairehau High School Papanui High School -
Preparing students for their
future
Mairehau High School’s building project
is well underway, and we look forward
to opening the first of our new buildings
next year.
The kura is named for the suburb in
which it is situated, and was put
in place in 1916 in recognition
of Mrs Mairehau Hutton (a
descendant of a notable
property benefactor to
the district). Mairehau
is also the name of
a fragrant shrub
featuring small white
flowers, reflected in
the school motto:
“Mairetia i te
Mātauranga” - Be
Fragrant With
Wisdom.
The school has
been gifted
the following
names by Ngāi
Tahu to use
for our new
buildings:
Technology
and Art Block: Waikākāriki
- original name of Horseshoe Lake.
Waikākariki was the site of a significant
Māori settlement called Te Oranga. Wai
means water and kākāriki has various
meanings including green, a type of
green lizard or a green parakeet.
Supported Learning Centre: Waiora
- for Wai of Waikākāriki and Ora of Te
Oranga. Health, soundness, wellbeing.
The concept of waiora encapsulates
the importance of the environments
in which we live and that have a
significant impact on the health
and wellbeing of individuals,
whānau and communities.
Gymnasium: Waitākiri
is Bottle Lake Forest.
Waitākiri means -
‘Muddy water’, ‘water
springs back’,
‘a lagoon’.The
swamplands were
well recognised
as food gathering
areas for iwi.
The site on
which Bottle
Lake Forest is
now situated
contained flax
swamps, coastal
bush and an
eeling lagoon. There
were no dunes, just a gentle rising
sand plain. Behind this were wetlands.
The area was rich in native plants that
provided a constant supply of medicines
and materials for activities such as
building and weaving.
Giving students the opportunity to study
from an innovative and broad curriculum
is critical to providing each student a
pathway that meets their individual
needs. We allow for a greater range and
flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/tertiary
interface. This reinforces the philosophy
underpinning personalised learning
and is strongly supported
by understanding our
students’ interests,
passions, talents,
and ultimately
their career
aspirations.
We understand
that for
effective
learning to take
place, it has to
be implemented
in such a way that
students will be
highly engaged. The
school does this in a
‘forward thinking’ way by
creating learning environments
that allow our students to see value
in what they do and achieve. Papanui
“PRIDE” is what we represent and we
demonstrate this by having young adults
leave our school as confident learners
who have gained the appropriate
qualifications and social skills to
become valued contributing members
of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations – what we call “Our
Full service Model”. The school highly
values the connectedness of
curricular and co-curricular
learning. We have
a philosophical
understanding
that the holistic
development
of the student
is critical to
their individual
success.
The school has
worked hard
to consolidate
recent initiatives
to ensure sustained
and continuous
improvement. You are
invited to view our website, school
charter, ERO report, and/or contact the
school for more information.
We look forward to welcoming all
prospective students and their families/
GARDENING 27
Be sparing with the frequency of watering
AS WE MOVE through summer,
keep the garden looking fresh for
your outdoor enjoyment.
1. Conserve water – While
we may not reach Australian levels
of urgency about water shortages,
the eco-messages are just going to
get tougher from now on. Take a
good look at how you use water in
your garden and make some plans.
This might be the year you invest
in a rainwater tank to capture all
that free wet stuff, and to review the
sprinkler system timing and spacing
(so you don’t waste water spraying
paths and so forth). Whatever
your method, be sparing with the
frequency of watering – established
plants need only 30min of water
once or twice a week, vegetables
more. Check the soil at 10cm first.
2. Mulch to save work
– Mulch is the instant makeover.
It suppresses weeds, makes a tired
garden look fresh and slows water
evaporation. But only apply it once
the soil is good and wet, as otherwise
it will not help your plants.
Leave breathing room around
trunks and shrubs to avoid fungus.
3. Plant locally – Native plants
(from your part of the country) are
perfectly adapted to your local sun,
rain and wind conditions, so they
look after themselves. The huge fashion
for natives is not just about looks,
it is about reducing hard work.
4. Mow lightly – In the summer
lawns do best when the grass is
longer (about 25-30mm). The soil
and roots are shaded so the lawn
does not get sunburnt and more
moisture is retained.
5. Add water – There is nothing
like water to enhance a garden.
While a full-scale water feature can
get expensive, garden centres now
sell small plug-and-go bubbling
water bowls and sculptures which
do not need elaborate construction.
Add a few plants and you have a
tiny tropical paradise.
6. Create shady spots – If
your deck gets the full blaze of sun,
look at creating a secondary area
for relaxing in the heat of the day.
Deciduous trees may take a while to
grow, but pergolas with removable
shade sails and market umbrellas
that hang from a wall or fence are
good summer solutions that can be
packed away when you need to soak
up winter rays.
is going to be as close to employing your own personal coach as you can get….and, it is all for free.
We are presenting two 10 week programmes to you. The first one is for beginners and Les Mills
City2Surf first timers. You consider yourself unfit, probably carry a bit too much around the hips and
waist and you have not played sport for a period of time. The second programme is aimed at people
who are already dabbling in fitness and have some experience with jogging or running. For both
groups the main goal will be to finish the event, enjoy the experience but above all use the 10 week
programme as a means to improve your overall health, fitness and quality of life.
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and 1
session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TiP oF The WeeK
If you have never run or jogged
before, we recommended that you
alternate brisk walking with jogging
as indicated in the schedule. Be
aware that jogging is different from
running. When jogging, you go at a
pace which is only a fraction faster
than a brisk walk, your feet stay close
to the ground and the rhythm is that
of a slow dance. This is a technique,
once mastered, which will enable you
to jog for longer periods of time (for
example, the whole 14 km distance..)
Budding champion off to solid start
• By Joshua Smith
A NELSON pitstop has proven
fruitful for exciting pacer Akuta.
The threeyear-old
colt is on his
way north
to tackle the
Listed NZB
Standardbred
Harness Million
3yo colt
Mark Purdon
and gelding
final (2200m)
next month and Rolleston-based
trainers Mark Purdon and
Hayden Cullen thought the Nelson
Pine Nelson Classic
FFA (1609m) on Sunday was
an ideal starting point for their
charge.
The standout juvenile of last
season was sent out a $1.40 favourite
following three pleasing
trials and he duly delivered for
punters after a textbook drive by
Blair Orange.
Akuta’s victory pleased cotrainer
and part-owner Mark
Purdon who had to watch the
race on his phone en route to
Southland.
“I was on my way down to
Invercargill but I was thrilled,”
Purdon said.
“I pulled over and watched
the race on my phone and I
was thrilled with the way
Blair handled him and the way
he won.
“He is very exciting and I
have been thrilled with his
training and preparation for
this.”
While Purdon was pleased
with Akuta’s training, finding
a suitable starting point for his
campaign proved more difficult,
but he was pleased to land on the
Nelson FFA on his way north to
Auckland.
“I have been concerned with
trying to find a race for him with
his 66 rating, but this worked out
perfect,” Purdon said.
“I like starting a horse out
over a short distance first-up,
it doesn’t knock the stuffing
out of them.
“It worked out well with this
free-for-all being on his way
north.”
Purdon is looking forward to
heading to Auckland himself
next month for the inaugural
Harness Millions night, which
follows a similar structure to
the Karaka Millions twilight
meeting in the thoroughbred
code.
“We have got the race on
February 12th (Harness Millions)
and I did want to give him
a couple of runs at Auckland
before we take that big one on.
The plan is working perfectly so
far,” Purdon said.
Purdon purchased the son of
Bettor’s Delight out of Broadfield
Lodge’s 2020 New Zealand
Bloodstock Standardbred
National Yearling Sale draft
for $170,000 and stayed in for a
share with well-known owner
Ian Dobson.
“He ticked all the boxes – good
conformation, a good head and
eye on him. He was well put
together,” Purdon said.
“Ian (Dobson) wanted me to
come in on a couple of other
horses in earlier years and we
were committed elsewhere but
when I purchased the horse he
said: ‘If I take him Mark you
better come in too’. It has worked
out well.”
Tricky greens give home advantage
• By Chris Barclay
CAROLE STEELE likens golf’s
Boyle Cup to the Ranfurly
Shield, an apt comparison as
holders Charteris Bay zero in on
matching the province’s famed
rugby side’s achievement from
1982-85.
With 17 challengers denied
this tenure, and another six on
the cards following a ballot draw
in March, the experienced fivestrong
women’s team is close to
emulating Canterbury’s streak
of 25 log o’ wood defences under
coach Grizz Wyllie.
Had Covid-19 not intervened
in 2020, Charteris Bay might
have already been on the
brink of eclipsing that mark as
they missed hosting another
half-dozen opponents at the
picturesque course.
Christchurch, who introduced
the inter-club challenge
trophy in 1914, Everglades,
Rangiora, Coringa, Russley
and Waimakariri Gorge were
beaten last year as Charteris Bay
dropped only 4.5 matches from a
possible 30.
They started the reign by
beating Greendale in April,
2018, with Steele, the senior
player at 81-years-old, citing
home course advantage for their
prolonged success in the match
play format.
The greens can be deceiving
when putting towards the
harbour, while the nine-hole
layout’s terrain can also catch
visitors unawares.
“In reality, we’ve only got one
funny little bunker. There are no
real hard things on the course
but people don’t find it easy,”
Steele said.
“It’s the greens and the fact
it is undulating . . . people do
find that quite daunting when
they’re used to flat courses. It’s
HOLDERS: The Charteris
Bay Boyle Cup team aims
to retain the trophy they
claimed in 2018 through
another calendar of fixtures
in 2022. Chris Brodie holds
the silverware before (from
left) Denise Whitbread, Julie
Sims, Alice Lewis and Carole
Steele.
a physical test, the course does
keep us up to scratch fitnesswise.”
Steele, after all, has no plans to
retire, nor do Denise Whitbread,
the youngest team member at
68, Julie Sims, Alice Lewis and
captain Chris Brodie.
Continuity is another factor
with personnel changes kept to
a minimum with Sharon Screen
now playing for Tai Tapu and
Nicky Coop on call if required as
a reserve.
Although Charteris Bay’s
team is made up of
superannuitants, Steele clarified
the Boyle Cup is not a mastersstyle
competition.
“We haven’t got anyone else to
choose from,” she laughed.
“There’s only 15 active playing
ladies and some of them are
older than me.”
Steele was farming in Port
Levy when she joined the club 48
years ago.
“Back then a group of us
girls said: ‘Let’s go and try
this silly game called golf’,
and I’m still there. I love it,” she
said.
Steele was a golfing novice
when Charteris Bay fashioned
a sequence of 34 defences in the
1970s; their previous tenure only
lasted a couple of games about
seven years ago so they’re keen
for this stretch to last as long as
possible.
“We say it’s the Ranfurly
Shield of Canterbury ladies golf,”
she said.
“It’s a prestigious trophy, very
special.”

Trillo Metals 32nd Muscle Car Madness
Rangiora January 22-January 23
What a year everyone has had, especially car
enthusiasts who have had most of their automotive
events either cancelled or postponed, Muscle Car
Madness organiser Craig Stare says.
“I guess the plus side of this is that not being able
to travel has meant that a lot of our car people have
been spending their holiday money on their car
projects or buying a new collectable classic – all
dressed up and nowhere to go.....or show,” he says.
As one of the largest events in the country, he
notes, MCM always seems to draw some amazing
“one-off ” vehicles to the display.
“First off, we have Pete Schmanski’s nitroburning,
blown, hemi-powered 1934 Ford coupe
from Palmerston North. Another ’34 Ford hoping
to attend is Garth Hogan’s Bonneville salt flats car
that has clocked over 180 mph with a stinking hot
flathead engine, possibly the fastest flathead V8 in
the world.
“The car was virtually totally destroyed in a garage
fire but it has now been painstakingly rebuilt and it
will be fired up at the show.”
Also on display will be Will Dickinson’s custom
Toyota ‘LoLux’, one of the hottest new vehicles on
the import scene, with amazing attention to detail
being shown.
There will be plenty of interest in the Rockabilly
pageant, which kicks off at 12 noon on Saturday with
classes for the whole family, including the littlies.
Immediately after this the burnouts start at 1.30pm.
“ This part of the day is wickedly popular and
spectators get there really early to listen to the classic
rock performed by ‘Sign of the Firebird’, who play
the hour before. This year we have Greg Murphy as a
guest judge, thanks to the burnout sponsor Stadium
Finance.”
Again this year it is not possible to bring in
overseas bands, but the event will see the return of
the Auckland-based rockabilly band, the Recliner
Rockers, along with some top local up-and-coming
bands.
Added to this will be the trade stalls and specialinterest
car displays, including the celebration of the
‘90 years of the 1932 Ford’. Anyone bringing their ’32
Ford to display will get in free.
Over 200 cars are driving down from all parts of
the North Island. One group has a budget of $50,000
for this trip, much of which will be spent in the
community. The event usually brings over $4 million
into the North Canterbury community and directly
benefits the local Civil Defence and the Waikuku
Surf Life-saving Club.
“With the loss this year of the local A&P show, the
rodeo and many other events it gives locals and out-
Own a Peugeot EV in less than 60min
SO YOUR OLD banger has
blown up, or you just feel like it’s
time to get a new car.
The problem could well be
that the vehicle you want is the
victim of the supply issues that
are plaguing most of the new car
distributors and dealerships.
Wait times of months ahead
are pretty much the norm these
days, thanks to a semi-conductor
manufacturing shortage globally
and shipping backlogs because of
the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, there is much hope,
what is labelled a 60-Minute
Commitment by the Armstrong
Motor Group could see you
driving in a premium car – new
or pre-owned – in less than one
hour.
The initiative incorporates the
choice of more than 700 vehicles
from 16 different manufacturers
at all Armstrong dealerships,
the process is both quick and
simplistic.
With many of the elements
needed to make a car ready
for the road available on-line –
registration, insurance, money
transfer or finance options – these
can all be arranged within the
time frame, although a road test
isn’t included in the 60-minute
programme.
The Armstrong Group has cars
ready to go at any given time,
they are groomed and sitting
waiting for customers.
A change of transport could
well see a buyer behind the wheel
of a new Peugeot 208, the series
fully revamped this year and
available now from Armstrong’s
Peugeot. This evaluation focuses
on the e-208, its nomenclature
pointing to electric; yes, it’s a full
plug-in model, there is no petrol
engine, just an electric motor and
battery power.
The e-208 lands in the market
at $61,990, as such it easily
qualifies for the Government’s
clean car discount of $8625.
Just like its petrol-powered
counterparts, the e-208 arrives
with a new body shell and
interior. It is state-of-the-art allthrough
with a high percentage
of toggle switches and digitalised
functions. Saying that, it looks
minimalistic, and being so
is intuitive and one quickly
becomes at home as a driver.
The 208 as a series isn’t big, it’s
a cheeky, five-door hatchback
that is as much at ease in the
city commute as it is on a long
highway haul.
However, the e-208 has charging
factors to ponder. Peugeot rate it
with a maximum driving distance
of 348km between charges. It will
take about seven hours to charge
from empty to full on a domestic
supply 7.4kW wallbox, or 28 hours
using a three-pin power cable. If
you have a type 2 cable you can
hook into any of the nationwide
charging ports that are springing
up all over the country. A 30min
COMPACT: The interior of the Peugeot e-208 incorporates a
raft of new-age specification in a minimalistic environment.
PEUGEOT e-208 GT: Plug-in electric vehicle that complements a new petrol model.
boost will give you a zero to 80
per cent charge and you can be on
your way again.
I never used the type 2 cable, I
charged the e-208 overnight from
my garage, the cable, thankfully,
long enough to reach and have
the garage door closed at the
same time.
Driving the e-208 requires little
familiarity, you just hop in, select
D on the drive selector (or R) and
away you go. Of course, there is
very little sound, just a hum from
the motor – much like the sound
you get on a Christchurch tram.
The e-208 is sprightly, although
you do have to remember if you
like quick acceleration that will
lessen the distance you have to
travel between charges. That
aside, a standstill to 100km/h
time of 8.3sec is quite quick,
and when you pull out for that
highway overtake the mid-range
response is forceful – 6sec to
make 120 from 80km/h.
Peugeot rate the e-208 with
100kW and 260Nm, bear in mind
that the latter figure is available
from just 300rpm, power is
instant and with the lightweight
of the car (1455kg) acceleration is
constantly invigorating.
There are also driver-selectable
drive modes, including a sport
option which really livens
accelerator feel.
I drove the e-208 much in
keeping with its design role
– suburb to city commute, as
well as a country excursion to
• Price – Peugeot e-208 GT,
$61,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4055mm; width, 1745mm;
height, 1430mm
• Configuration – Electric
motor, front-wheeldrive,
100kW, 260Nm,
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.3sec
Darfield. At open road speed the
e-208 sits tight on the road and
imparts little noise, sure there are
wind gushes around the mirrors
and a hum off the tyres, but those
sounds are only exacerbated
by the lack of noise from the
driveline, it is almost silent as you
travel, just a purr from the motor
as speed increases or decreases.
I suffer a little from what you
would call range anxiety so I
didn’t venture far off the beaten
track, but I did travel back to the
city taking in a few tight corners
near Burnham.
Just like the 208, the e variant
has composed handling manners,
it sights well attached to the
road and is remarkably stable in
a corner. Drive is through the
front wheels, but even with the
strong torque rush there is little
to feel in terms of tugging at the
steering wheel, the handling feel
is neutral. A lot of the latter can
be attributed to the wonderful
Michelin tyres, at 205/45 x 17in
there isn’t a lot of rubber on the
road, but steering is accurate and
direct.
It must also be said the e-208
takes on board the engineering
elements that have made Peugeot
the master of balance between
ride comfort and handling
ability. The suspension is supple,
affording a fabulous in-cabin ride.
Comfort for all on board is
paramount and for three in
the rear it isn’t too much of a
squeeze. Those up front have a
lot of new-age specification at
their hands – satellite navigation,
keyless entry and power switch,
ambient lighting, panoramic roof
and radar cruise control. There’s
also leather/suede-type seating
material along with heated front
seats.
The e-208 is also badged GT,
that’s a bold claim but with
the way electric technology is
progressing it could well be a
grand touring model. Any electric
car that has a travelling distance
of over 300km allows you to
tackle a long highway journey
with relative peace of mind.
In recent weeks the Kiddie
family has been travelling a lot in
the old Toyota, it’s a bit of a fuel
guzzler and we are sure noticing
the pain at fill-up with the high
price of petrol at present. We
know we can’t sustain those costs
as I head towards retirement.
It may well be time to head to
Armstrong’s and take up the
60-minute challenge.
Building blocks to
a new home
When building a new home, here’s a reminder
to pay attention to some of the fine details...
Anyone intending to build a new home should have the
builder’s contract checked out by an experienced lawyer.
If you want to compare building companies, it’s important to
get down to finer details such as how many power points there
are per room, the type of windows you are having or which
paint finishes are included.
Questions to ask builders include:
• Do you have a completion
guarantee and how does it
work?
• Is there a loss of deposit
guarantee?
• Is the company a Registered
Master Builder?
• How are the deposit and
