JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Leigh Pomlett,
Walsall’s chairman, to One
Call Stadium for this afternoon’s
match.
What a time this is to be a Stags’
supporter. To earn 24 points out of a
possible 27 is a remarkable feat and
sets us in good stead for the second
half of the season.
I am particularly proud of the levels
of endeavour shown by our players,
which are evident to us all. Our
players are clearly enjoying their
football right now and we are seeing
committed, full-hearted displays
individually and collectively week-in,
week-out. The task now, of course, is
to maintain those levels as we enter
the remaining 23 games.
Elsewhere, you may have seen by
now that Paul and Tina Broughton
have stepped down from the board of
directors after nine-and-a-half years.
Paul and Tina have helped create a
lasting legacy at One Call Stadium
and leave their roles on the board of
directors with our highest regard.
Their contribution towards the
numberless improvements at the
club in the past decade cannot be
underestimated.
Carolyn and I are proud of the
achievements they have made in
enhancing every area of the football
club.
Though they now vacate their
day-to-day responsibilities at One
Call Stadium, their new honorary
positions as boardroom ambassadors
will enable them to enjoy home
matchdays at One Call Stadium in the
years to come.
We are sure that our supporters will
join us in our gratitude to Paul and
Tina for their service to Mansfield
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Walsall manager your monies’ worth of entertainment
Matthew Taylor, along with in the last trio of fixtures!
the staff, players and supporters
from the West Midlands for this
afternoon’s match.
Walsall have enjoyed a clear week
and we’re expecting a reaction
from them today after their
disappointment at Stevenage last
Saturday. We know how dangerous
they can be from our match against
them earlier in the season. We made
some defensive mistakes in that
game from which they punished
us and we cannot afford any such
mistakes against them this afternoon.
Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over Swindon
was perhaps our most significant
win of the season to date, especially
considering how narrowly we lost to
Middlesbrough in the FA Cup three
days previously.
From start to finish, our performance
was outstanding. The effort from our
players was remarkable and I think
that Rhys Oates’ run in the first-half
from the edge of his own box, into
Swindon’s area to win a penalty,
typified that.
We always try to start strongly at
home by getting an early goal and
we did just that courtesy of a good
move, which set the tone for the
remainder of the match.
Overall, the quality of the
match was deserved of the
league above; it was a superb
advertisement for League Two.
The last three games, against
Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and
Swindon, are probably as good as
any three successive games you’ll
wish to see and I trust you’ve had
As I write these notes on Wednesday
evening, we’re not too far away from
one or two additions in this January
transfer window, but there’ll be no
desperation or panic-buying. We’re
in a nice position and will improve
the squad, without disrupting any
camaraderie or that type of thing
within the current group.
We want to repeat Tuesday’s
performance this afternoon. We have
23 games remaining and there’s
much to play for.
We want to keep this run going and
with your support, we have every
opportunity of continuing to progress
in the second half of the campaign.
MATCH BALL SPONSORS TRAVEL
FROM JERSEY TO ATTEND FIRST
MANSFIELD GAME
This afternoon’s match ball
sponsors, 15-year-olds Ned, Kyle
and Fergus live in Jersey in the
Channel Islands. The boys have
made the 550 kilometre trip to
attend a game of the team they
have grown to love.
The story of the trio’s support for
Mansfield is unique. One of the boys,
Ned, was on holiday two years ago
and met ex-Mansfield player, Nicky
Maynard. After meeting the player,
Ned returned to Jersey and told his
friends about the encounter.
Since then, the three boys and the
rest of their friends have become
Stags’ supporters. The group became
captivated by the amber and blue,
and kept a very close eye on the
team's results.
Paul Wilson, the father of Kyle – one
of the match ball sponsors – spoke
to The Stag about the boys’ love for
the club.
“They’re huge fans. They’ve all got
Mansfield kits and they’re sort of a
mini-supporters fan club now over in
Jersey,” he said.
“When one of them met Nicky
Maynard a couple of years ago, he
spoke so fondly about the club and
the supporters.
“From that moment the lads
started to take an interest, and now
they’re Jersey’s biggest Mansfield
supporters.
“Their favourite game was Doncaster
away in the FA Cup. The Stags played
brilliantly and it was fantastic to
see the team perform in such a way
against a team from the division
above.
“This afternoon’s match ball
sponsorship and hospitality is a
Christmas present for the boys.
“We all hope the Stags can get a big
result this afternoon, continue their
fantastic form and climb further up
the table.”
REST IN PEACE, TREVOR HITCHCOCK
The club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong supporter
Trevor Hitchcock. He was 71.
Trevor had supported the club for over 60 years and was a season ticket holder for
much of that time.
He also acted as secretary for the Stags Supporters’ Association.
The club sends its deepest condolences to Trevor’s family at this difficult time.
THE
ACADEMY
Stags’ goalkeeper Louie Turner
provides an update on life at the
academy…
It has been a good experience
since I joined the club in July. I
managed to play a couple of games
with the under-18s’ team and feel
that I did well.
I have also played in the under-23s’
game against Sunderland a couple of
weeks ago, which was another great
experience.
Playing in an older age group was
really helpful for my development.
I was delighted to be included on the
bench on Saturday for the first team’s
FA Cup match with Middlesbrough.
Being able to train with a couple of
the older ‘keepers at the club has
been great. When you’re training with
older and more experienced players
it helps you to adapt to the pace of
the game. Your decision making has
to be so much quicker and you’ve
just got be able to adapt to it.
Training with Bish and Marek has
been really good. Bish is a young
‘keeper so some of his stories and
experiences are quite similar to mine.
Marek has a lot of experience and it’s
really good to learn about that. I was
a bit nervous when I was told I’d be
involved in the matchday squad at
the weekend but I just tried to take
everything from the experience that
I could.
It was a bit surreal to be on the bench
in the FA Cup. I couldn’t really believe
it. I just tried to take the whole
experience in. What a game to be
involved with as well.
Working with the coaches here
has been great, they’ve got a
lot of experience in football and
they’ve taught me things like game
management. The things that they’ve
taught me will be beneficial for the
rest of my career.
In the remainder of the season, I
hope to play more games and I hope
that the team can finish quite high
in the table. Of the games that we’ve
got left in the Youth Alliance League
we need to try and take as many
points as we can.
Ladies’ captain, Monica Bowley,
discusses the season so far and her
hopes for the rest of the season…
We’ve only just come back after
Christmas after having about
three weeks off.
In terms of results, we’re doing quite
well. We have games in hand on the
teams around us due to the weather
and Covid, so we’ll be looking to take
advantage of that rest and pick up
maximum points when we return to
action.
We are in third place at the moment,
so having the games in hand rather
than the points is not a problem.
Teams have cancelled fixtures at
the last minute and this can hinder
momentum. However, we are
confident that when we are back
out there on the pitch that we can
continue to strive towards our goal of
promotion.
The games coming up are very
important. We’ll soon be facing
the other top teams such as
Northampton, who are really doing
well at the minute, and they’re
scoring goals.
This year’s squad is really strong - it’s
probably one of the best we’ve had in
a long time.
Promotion is the number
one thing that we want.
It’s always been
something that
we’ve wanted, but
in the past few
seasons it just
hasn’t worked
out.
This time around
we have a really
good group of
players, and it’s
going to be a case of
how much we want
it as a team, and I’d like to think that
we all do.
There is only one spot up for grabs to
achieve that aim so we need to keep
our standards high.
It would be amazing to end the
season as champions. I have been
with the club now for six or seven
seasons, so to achieve promotion
after seeing how far we’ve come year
after year would be one of the finer
moments of my career.
Winning the league is one of the best
things you can do as a player as it
would mean achieving something
special together as a team, and
beating all the teams that you have
faced over the course of a season.
It would be fantastic to guide the
Stags to promotion as captain.
UTILITA UNDER-13S
GIRLS CUP AREA FINALS
Tuesday 11 January saw Derby
County host the regional finals
for the Utilita under-13s Girls
Cup competition. Ten schools
represented their football clubs
with the hopes of making it to the
final at Wembley later this year.
Selston High School had won
Mansfield’s local area final at the end
of 2021, beating the other schools at
RH Academy. The team finished top
of the table with 18 points, narrowly
defeating schools such as All Saints
and Joseph Whitaker. There was
some fierce competition amongst
the girls who were all determined
and focused for the chance to play
at Wembley and represent their
hometown club.
The event took place outside Pride
Park, Derby at Powerleague. With
Selston representing Mansfield Town,
the other competitors were West
Bromwich Albion, Shrewsbury Town,
Lincoln City, Nottingham Forest,
Derby County, Burton Albion, Walsall,
Coventry City and Birmingham City.
The six-a-side football contest
consisted of matches lasting 12
minutes per match, with breaks in
between. Mansfield Town began
their first two games with a narrow
loss to Lincoln and an excellent 4-1
victory against Coventry. Selston
played some brilliant football in
both games. As the day progressed,
Mansfield Town picked up another
victory against Birmingham with an
emphatic 6-0 win. Unfortunately, two
further losses to Shrewsbury and
West Brom meant the Stags finished
outside the top four.
The best game of the day for
Mansfield was a 6-6 draw against
Walsall. Both teams displayed a lot of
attacking intent as the contest ended
with a last-minute goal for Mansfield
to tie the game. In the end, Mansfield
Town finished seventh in the table,
but every single participant from
Selston High School represented the
Stags proudly. Shrewsbury Town
eventually won the competition.
PE teacher Amy Brooks was full of
pride for her team.
“You can see the amount of fun
they’ve [the girls] had,” she said.
“They’ve worked as a team. Wearing
the Mansfield kit makes them really
proud and honoured. It’s quite a
prestigious tournament.”
Mansfield Town Football in the
Community would like to thank
Selston for representing them in this
tournament.
THE GOLDEN
‘HIS STORY’
ARCHIVE
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with ‘His-
Story’, is former defender Paul
Garner who made 139 appearances
for the Stags, scoring eight goals
from 1984–89. Paul played left back
for the club and helped Mansfield
win the 1986-87 Associate Members’
Cup, playing in the final.
here were so many things
“Tthat happened during
my five years at Mansfield Town
Football Club! However, rather
unfortunately, most of them are
unprintable!
There are a couple of amusing
memories, however, that are
printable.
Once, Mansfield was playing a home
game and an opposition player
stamped on my foot during the
match. I managed to get through the
90 minutes although I was in a lot of
pain. At the full-time whistle I went to
see the club physio because I really
did think that my toe was broken!
When I lay on the treatment table,
the physio told me he knew of a way
to find out if it was broken or not,
without me having to go for an X-ray.
Keen to find out, I let him proceed
and the next thing I know, I was
sprawled out on the floor, writhing in
agony! The physio, on purpose, had
used the ultrasound machine on a
higher frequency than normal – ‘That
is the best way to find out’ he said!
I played the next game with a bigger
size boot and several pain-killing
injections – both in my foot, and now
with a very painful back! I don’t think
they would get away with that today!
There is another memorable time,
which myself and the rest of the
lads found amusing. The squad
was training on the top pitch with
John Jarman and Billy Dearden. We
noticed that Greavesie [Ian Greaves,
the then manager] was walking
around the outside of the training
pitch, and – rather suspiciously – he
kept disappearing every now and
again down the side of the banking. It
turned out that he’d been collecting,
and piling up, a number of wet sticks
that he had found scattered around
the surrounding area of the training
pitch – before then setting them all
on fire!
This, as you can imagine, caused a
lot of smoke and was very noticeable
– especially to those living in nearby
houses. Someone had obviously
become aware of it because the next
thing we know, the fire brigade was
turning up to come and deal with it –
and they weren’t best pleased!
None of us owned up to starting the
fire – including Greavsie, but he got
a lot of stick (no pun intended!) for
quite a while from all of the players,
as you can imagine!”
Front cover: To celebrate our
125th year, each edition of The
Stag this season will feature a
different home shirt from our
history on its cover. Sponsored
by Gunthorpe Textiles and
manufactured by Ribero, Stags
introduced a new look of blue on
the shoulders of the home jersey
which lasted just one season in
1991-92.
