Go see a movie at Capri Theater in New 

Sharon (107 E. Market St). This small town 

cinema first opened nearly 100 years ago!

and includes a Kids Zone and free

Newly opened in 2021, the Oskaloosa 

Public Library’s Makerspace Lab is a

Bonus! Edmundson Park 

Edmundson Park Playground (1420 

11th Ave W in Oskaloosa) will soon 

have a new look. The new all-ages, allinclusive 

playground is scheduled to 

be completed in Summer 2022, and 

will include slides, swings, spinners, 

climbing equipment, and more! 

The design includes several pieces 

of equipment that serve those with 

mobility or developmental concerns. 

A glider and a merry-go-round are 

wheelchair friendly, and specialized 

swing designs allow children of all 

abilities to share the fun with friends 

and family. A unique playground 

surface will be installed that will improve

Our best-kept secret is out: Mahaska County is a destination for natural beauty, 

unique wildlife, and tons of fun outdoor activities. For more information on any of

Happy Camping 

Semi-Primitive: Get away from it all while getting in 

touch with nature. Quercus Wilderness Area offers 

four primitive sites located on its beautiful 111 acres 

of wilderness dominated by oak, hickory, and other 

hardwood trees. Or, pitch your tent at Robertson Access, 

which is equipped with restrooms, tables, and grills. 

Creature Comforts: Eveland Access is a 54-acre multiuse 

recreation area located along the Des Moines River. 

The campground boasts 44 units, including electric sites, 

drinking water, picnic shelters, playground equipment, 

and a concrete boat ramp. Two all-season modern 

cabins are also available. 

Hit the Trail 

Scenic Overlook: Hike your way to the lookout point 

along the 2-mile trail at Cedar Bluffs, a unique 225- 

acre area boasting a wide variety of deciduous trees, 

wildflowers, ferns, and other plant life. Towering 

sandstone bluffs can be found along Cedar Creek, and 

an extensive stairway makes the descent to the creek 

safe and easy. 

Swinging Bridge: Cross the swinging bridge during 

your exploration of Russell Wildlife Area, a 424-acre area 

of disturbed land that has been allowed to revert back 

to its natural state along the South Skunk River. 

Nature Trail: At White Oak Conservation Area, hike 

along the nature trail, which offers easy access to the 

shoreline of a 20-acre man-made lake—the focal point 

of this 141-acre property.

Gone Fishin’ 

Hooked on Catfish: The 14-acre Glendale Access is a 

popular fishing spot for many outdoor enthusiasts. Located 

on the South Skunk River, it’s well known for fine catfish. 

Pick a Pond: Russell Wildlife Area’s five quarry ponds offer 

anglers the chance to catch bass, catfish, and bluegills. 

Canoes and kayaks are permitted on all of the ponds. 

Ice Fishing and More: White Oak Conservation Area’s 

20-acre man-made lake has been stocked with bass, 

catfish and bluegill. In addition to two shelter houses for 

picnics and a trail for hiking, it is equipped with a boat 

ramp, dock, and fishing jetty. During the winter season, 

White Oak is a popular destination for ice fishing. 

Try Something New 

Bird Watching: Maskunky Marsh is comprised of 92 acres 

of public land and attracts a wide variety of wildlife— 

including birds such as the yellow-crowned night heron! 

Fossil Digging: Millions of years ago, Russell Wildlife 

Area was a warm, shallow sea full of coral reefs. Scattered 

throughout the area today are dull, gray limestone 

mounds that contain fossils of plants, animals, and 

insects that lived nearly 325 million years ago! 

Environmental Learning Center: Located at Caldwell Park 

with easy access to the Mahaska Community Recreation 

Trail, the ELC opened in 2019. Visitors can see live animals, 

interactive ecosystem displays, and a 1,000-gallon fish 

aquarium. The ELC hosts a variety of events, camps, and 

educational programs throughout the year.

15 Places to Hear Live Music 

1. Smokey Row Coffee 

Located in the downtown Main Street district overlooking 

City Square Park, Smokey Row Coffee serves up food 

and drink with a side of live performances. Monday 

evenings are “Muse Mondays,” during which you can 

enjoy a local musician or open mic night from 6 - 8 pm.

2. Thankful Thursdays in The Alley 

Live music in The Alley (between Lu Roo & Co/Bridal 

Dreams and Smokey Row) every Thursday night 6-8 

pm June through August. Each week, a local business 

sponsors wine and beer. The concert ends just in time 

for guests to spill out into the Square for the City Band.

4. George Daily Community Auditorium 

George Daily Community Auditorium provides equal 

access to high-quality live performing arts, arts 

education, and energizing community resources. Come 

to the auditorium to enjoy a school band concert, youth 

theatre performance, or one of the professional season

5. Friday After Five 

Organized by the Mahaska Chamber and sponsored by 

local businesses, Friday After Five is held downtown on 

the street in front of the Mahaska County Courthouse. 

The event includes live music, food, and fun from 5 - 9

6. The Outer Space at Oskaloosa Art Center 

The Outer Space is a performance venue inside the 

Oskaloosa Art Center & Studios as part of Fine Arts & 

Cultural Events (FACE) of Mahaska County. The intimate 

space hosts a number of different events and activities, 

including live music, open mics, comedy, and more.

Friday After Five 

3. City Band Concerts on the Square 

Oskaloosa’s city band was first organized in 1864. It 

is known as one of the oldest city bands west of the 

Mississippi River. The band performed on a doubledeck 

bandstand from 1882 to 1912, when the current 

bandstand was constructed. The first concert on this 

bandstand was on June 1, 1912. The band currently plays 

every Thursday night at 8 pm from June through mid-

7. Penn Central Mall 

Throughout the year, Penn Central Mall hosts events 

in the Center Court, including live music performances 

during collector and vendor fairs. During the holidays, 

the venue is especially festive with live music events like 

“Merry TubaChristmas,” gospel concerts, Muse Music

8. Elks Lodge 340 

The Elks hosts comedy nights, magicians, and even

9. Rock Island Tap 

Located in a historic train depot that’s been renovated 

into a bar, the Rock Island Tap frequently hosts live music 

concerts. It’s the perfect spot to grab a drink and kick

10. Southern Iowa Fairgrounds 

The music-filled Southern Iowa Fair hosts both wellknown 

and rising country music stars, in addition to an 

annual Bluegrass Festival and other live music events

Concert on the Square is a free concert in downtown 

Oskaloosa that gathers surrounding communities 

together in a worship setting. The 2022 concert is set for

12. Sweet Corn Serenade 

Oskaloosa Main Street will be hosting the 35th Sweet Corn 

Serenade on Thursday, July 28, 2022. Come downtown for 

fresh-cooked sweet corn, burgers, and live music. 

13. Eveland Access Summerfest 

Held for the first time in 2020 and organized by Muse 

Music Store and the Mahaska County Conservation 

Board, this outdoor music festival happens at Eveland 

Access and includes live music, lawn games, and cooking

14. Muse Music Store 

This downtown shop offers new and used instruments, 

equipment and accessories for every musician from

area’s Latin community on May 7, 2022, in downtown

LOCAL HISTORIC 

It all began with a chair... 

What began as an unexpected conversation 

between two kindred spirits has grown into 

a flourishing historical attraction and one 

of Mahaska County’s true hidden gems. 

When John C. Bradbury of Oskaloosa decided 

to repair the woven seat of a family rocking 

chair, he sought out Aaron W. Mattix, a pioneer 

settler of the county with the knowledge and 

skills needed for such a repair. The simple 

business transaction to maintain a 

family heirloom became a meeting 

of the minds. The men began 

chatting, and Mattix showed his 

extensive collection of pioneer and 

Native American artifacts to his 

visitor. 

Bradbury encouraged Mattix to 

allow others to see the collection 

in some kind of museum or public 

building, but Mattix felt strongly 

the collection should remain in 

Mahaska County. Shortly after this 

exchange, Mattix died at the age 

of 81 and one of his sons reached 

out to Bradbury asking for advice 

about his father’s collection. The 

Mahaska County Historical Society 

was born. 

Incorporated in January 1942, the Society found a home 

to store and display its collection of historical “relics” in 

the courthouse, first in the basement and later on the 

3rd floor. The initial Mattix collection was soon joined 

by other pieces of the pioneer past as local citizens and 

Society members donated items of interest to preserve. 

The Historical Society’s permanent home is now the 

Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum. Siblings Roy and Lillian 

Nelson believed in the mission of the organization, 

and left their pioneer grandfather’s homestead and 

acreage to the Historical Society in 1958. They charged 

the Society with maintaining the Nelson buildings and 

honoring the pioneer legacy of their family. The Society 

fulfilled this task with the creation of a rich museum 

complex: Nelson Pioneer Farm & Museum.

GEM CELEBRATES 80 YEARS 

1. Prine School: A visitor interacts with a 

volunteer in the Prine School. One of the last 

country schools to close in the whole state of 

Iowa, Prine operated from 1861 until 1966. 

2. Littler Cabin: Built between 1867-1869, 

the cabin is originally from near Bussey, Iowa. 

3. Blacksmith Shop: Clark’s Blacksmith 

Shop is the only reproduction building on-site 

and has hosted activities like “Hammer Ins” 

for the public to try their hand at the craft. 

4. Nelsons’ Dining Room: Built by 

Daniel Nelson in 1853, the five-room Nelson 

House has five chimneys, built-in cabinets and 

closets, and glass windows. 

5. Mott General Store: The Mott family 

operated this general store from 1915 to 1923 

in the town of Lacey, Iowa.

At its quiet, scenic location just 

minutes from town, the Nelson 

Pioneer Farm & Museum offers 

visitors a chance to step back in 

time. Guests can visit the site each 

summer to explore the original 

Nelson buildings and a dozen other 

historic structures that have been 

moved from across Mahaska County. 

Built in 1964, the museum building 

houses two exhibit floors and a 

genealogy library for public use. 

The museum also hosts a calendar of 

public, educational events throughout 

its open season, including the Annual 

Fall Festival every 3rd Saturday of 

September. The Fall Festival is a 

community celebration of pioneer life 

showcasing historic skill demonstrations, 

agricultural equipment, and familyfriendly 

activities. This rich tradition 

celebrates its 56th year in 2022.

Every holiday season, 250,000+ LED Christmas lights illuminate the 

facades of buildings surrounding Oskaloosa’s City Square Park. 

Stroll through the Square with a cup of hot cocoa in 

one hand and shopping bags in the other. Listen to the 

holiday music playing over outdoor speakers. Climb the 

stairs to the historic bandstand, where you can take in a 

360-degree view of Painting with Lights. You might just 

think you’re the star of your very own Christmas movie. 

Painting with Lights is the first and only display of its kind 

in Iowa, and is the result of countless volunteer hours and 

generous donations from individuals and businesses each 

year. The brilliant display of lights covers all four sides of the 

town square and takes several weeks to install. Fundraising 

and planning for the project happen year-round. 

Thinking about a visit to see the lights? Plan to make 

a day of it. Around and nearby the Square, you’ll find 

coffee shops and cafes, restaurants, and retail including 

clothing boutiques, a music store, Brown’s Shoe Fit, 

Oskaloosa True Value, and the Book Vault, a unique book 

shop in a beautifully renovated historic bank building. 

Support small businesses with your Christmas shopping, 

then stick around to see the lights turn on! 

The Turn on the Lights ceremony happens on the 

Saturday before Thanksgiving. The lights glow daily 

4:30 pm to 11:00 pm through the first week in January.

Mahaska County is home to a diverse landscape full of 

amazing flora and fauna. Spread out across the county 

are 21 natural areas managed by the Mahaska County 

Conservation Board, including lakes, prairies, forests, 

and bluffs. In early September, I set out to explore 

these locations and determine which five offered the 

most enjoyable views. Not only did I get to experience 

natural areas all over the county, but I also got to see 

the landscape around me as I drove to these places. 

Mahaska County truly is a beautiful county with much 

more to offer than what meets the eye. 

With a blend of forest and prairies, 225 total acres, and over 

3 miles of trails, Cedar Bluffs Natural Area (1) can easily take 

up an entire afternoon to explore. The north end of the trail 

features an overlook with a breathtaking view of the Des 

Moines River. This is even more rewarding after climbing the 

bluffs to get to it.

Being mostly engulfed by forest makes Quercus Wilderness 

Area (2) a perfect place for turkey, mushroom, and hickory nut 

hunting—and capturing scenic photos of the woods.

There are very few areas in Iowa—and in the world—like Eddyville 

Dunes Sand Prairie (3). The grass is sandy and cacti dot the trail. 

Animals like ornate box turtles and six-lined race runner lizards 

call this ecosystem their home. On the eastern side is a small 

pond with a wooden bridge—a beautiful spot to see the various 

species of birds that live here.

Russell Wildlife (4) is a must-see for explorers. It has multiple fire 

breaks that can be used as paths, each of which is greater than a 

1-mile trek. There are five quarries-turned-ponds full of fish, plenty 

of spots to bird watch, and a swinging bridge. At times, it didn’t 

feel like Iowa—but like I’d been teleported to a faraway land. 

A great place to go fishing, White Oak Conservation 

Area (5) has a beautiful lake at its center with a trail 

that winds all around it.

Self-Guided Time Travel in the Main Street District 

While sitting in a coffee shop, have you ever 

wondered who had coffee there 100 years ago? Was 

it even a coffee shop? Or could it have been briefly 

owned by a fraudulent investment advisor who fled 

town with a stash of diamonds and cash?! Have 

you ever considered that your dentist’s office might 

have been a cigar store and pool hall? Or that your 

apartment was once a saloon? Or that your favorite 

hangout has hosted many presidential candidates 

over the years, including President Obama? 

Look for these! 

These aren’t just flights of fanciful imagination. 

These are the secret past lives of several buildings 

in downtown Oskaloosa. And these historical “fun 

facts” have been uncovered, researched, and 

installed on historical building markers by a group 

of local history buffs so that you can discover them 

for yourself! 

Each historical marker (plaques pictured above) 

includes the year the building was built, pictures 

of the building through the years, and interesting 

tidbits of information that are sure to charm 

community members and visitors alike. 

So far, historical markers have been installed on 

nine buildings, all within easy walking distance of 

each other, including: Centennial Building, City Fire 

Department, Frankel Building, IBM Building, Iowa 

Building, Oskaloosa Public Library, Stapp Building, 

Trolley Place, and the Mahaska County Courthouse. 

A tenth marker will be installed on the Book Vault in 

Spring 2022. 

While on your self-guided walking tour, don’t 

forget to take a stroll down The Alley (between 

Bridal Dreams and Smokey Row Coffee) to check 

out the nationally and internationally recognized 

Oskaloosans featured on the “Legacy of Excellence” 

signs. The walls of this alley-turned-gathering-space 

are lined with stories about illustrious locals who 

went on to life in the public eye—some of whom 

have returned to The Alley just to share firsthand 

stories after seeing their sign!
