Celebrity
@Paleocrypto
Cyborg fam, happy new year!
cyborgs
Thank you again for your early support & also for your patience while
I took a little extra unexpected time over the holidays to reorient my
life for full-time Celebrity Cyborg Society in 2022. I’ve been thinking
hard, I’ve been working hard, I’m all in. That said, I want to announce
some early initiatives towards making this more of a communal,
distributed project.
Here’s what I’m thinking for immediate next steps:
1). A few of you have mentioned that they’d never consider selling
their Cyborg(s) prior to
the whole collection being
released (that’s when we’ll
first launch on Magic Eden,
for example) but that’s still
a few months off, inevitably;
so, in the meantime, I’ll be
airdropping a new piece
of Cyborg-related art for
every time a wallet has
participated, win or lose,
in the first 100 Holaplex
auctions; this new
companion collection can
be traded on secondary
marketplaces (i.e.
Exchange) right away as
you wish. Here’s a preview
of some of the pieces,
which will be airdropped
sometime before the end
of January: https://www.
travisrimebrooks.com/
pseudo-memories
8
SHILL Issue #30
2). Additionally, as a reward for your early support, every auction winner
of the first 100 Holaplex auctions has earned an opportunity to “cocreate”
a future Cyborg, which means A). deciding what celebrity you
want to drop, PLUS B). owning 22.60% “co-creator equity” in that NFT,
in perpetuity (basically this means 22.60% of the initial sale, plus 3% of
royalties, forever -- stay tuned for more specific details)
3). Also, I’ll be making a more consistent effort to separate myself as an
individual creator from the collective voice of the project on Twitter, etc.,
so here’s my personal handle: https://twitter.com/PaleoCrypto
Would love your feedback on this.
In the meantime, the final 4 auctions of the first 100 of the collection will
be going up, one at a time, in the Holaplex storefront, starting right now
(Leslie Jones, Sandra Oh, Travis Barker, Amanda Gorman). These are the
final chances to receive the additional perks as described above.
https://ccs.holaplex.com/
thanks again, cheers, lfg.
STILL
rugging
@The__Solstice
Oof. Gecko devs spent all the mint money on hookers and blow. Now
they want to give the project to the community and keep 90% of the
royalties. Not a good look. I never liked them, but I feel bad for the
holders who had faith in this team.
WHAT!
Dear Geckos,
Over the past few days and since the release of the flightpath and
the details of our goals with the rockets it has become abundantly
clear that the community does not share the same vision as we
do, as we have learned through seeing your discussions in the
discord and through our very own discussions with many of you
in the community; including from the great discontent expressed
by prominent leaders in the space, such as Koz, and members
from the Neon Citadel such as Pace and Trap with our vision.
As much as we would have loved to carry out our own vision,
we do not want to see the community, including prominent and
critical supporters of the project in such extreme division and
unrest. As such, we are keen on embarking upon a new chapter
and allowing a decentralized community driven vision for the
geckos whereby it is managed by a DAO moving forward. We will
14
SHILL Issue #30
continue to provide our support to the DAO in connection with
the management as founders of this project and creators of the
artwork we have thus far sold.
The Gecko art, the lore and the potential for the Geckos is abundant
and there are many talented individuals in this community who
are passionate about helping this project reach its potential with
a different vision than ours for things such as the rockets. While
we wanted to create a product that we thought was innovative
and would have been fun for the community to interact with in
the customizable rockets, we understand the community has
their own concerns with respect to this direction.
Therefore, the GGSG team is making the difficult decision to
hand over the further and future management of the project to
a DAO led by prominent and active members of the community,
as determined by the community through voting. Once the DAO
is properly set up and truly decentralized it may begin to receive
a portion of future royalties from such date in the future, which
shall be later determined, from Gecko transactions thereafter.
We as the founders will continue to run our discord and our twitter.
We know many of you were also looking forward to the rockets.
As such, we will showcase what we had been working on with
sponsors, the rocket components, the staking mechanism and
UI. However, we will not sell this artwork via a mint or give it out
for free via an airdrop; this showcase will be solely for the sake of
artistic appreciation.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our management
of the project thus far. Our intention from the start was always
to create and sell beautiful art collections with entertaining and
engaging lore – we hope that thus far you enjoyed our artwork
and lore as much as we did. This is merely the beginning of a
new chapter for a decentralized future for the management of
the Geckos and we hope you all will stick around to see what a
community managed project can develop into (Draper and I will
personally be holding on to all our geckos and will continue to be
a part of the community).
$SHADOW
or
GenesysGO NFT?
@rebeccagund
Want to get invested in @GenesysGo or $shdw but
not sure how? Here are your options along with
benefits/drawbacks.
1. You can go to @JupiterExchange and buy
$shdw. This is pretty straightforward. Atm, the
coin price is $1.92. This suggests a fully diluted
market cap of 392m.
1a. After you buy your $shdw you can invest it into double
dip liquidity pools on @orca_so or deposit for interest on @
Francium_Defi @TulipProtocol. The liquidity pools are higher
risk due to potential of impermanent loss so read up on that
first.
2. What about the SSC nft? Each nft will emit 10k shdw total,
plus an extra 3k for the first person that keeps it staked for 365
days. You can currently buy the NFTs on @MagicEden_NFT
and other platforms. Floor is 145 sol. This means each nft is
trading for $1.67 per shdw.
2a. So what are the pros/cons of the nft vs coin? You pay
less per $shdw with the nft. That said, you also receive those
emissions over time so you need to balance your time horizon
and what kind of interest you’d earn on shdw in the mean time.
There’s currently a 15% diff.
Is the 15% enough to justify the nft vs the token? I would say
no, EXCEPT there’s value in the nft besides tokens. GG has
expressed intent to create some kind of revenue sharing feature
for nft holders. It also gives access to the SSCDAO which has
quickly become v respected.
I think either route is a good
choice at current prices
without a clear winner on price.
If you wanna trade actively,
the coin might be ideal. If
you wanna buy and hold, the
nft could be best. Either way,
THE AOI
illustration & NFTs
Ed Merlin Murray gives his perspective on an area that has been
growing in stature and hitting the headlines: Non-Fungible Tokens
(NFTs). These are a new way to verify the scarcity of a digital asset,
often a jpeg or mp4. They exist on a blockchain, which is like a kind of
giant immutable ledger, and are purchased using a crypto currency.
https://theaoi.com/2022/01/07/illustration-and-nfts/
Hello Ed. Please give some background as to how illustration and
NFTs have interacted
Traditionally a lot of illustrators have needed several streams
of revenue in order to stay afloat. For me this has consisted of
commissioned illustration and animation work in a variety of
24
SHILL Issue #30
fields (music videos and album artwork, publications, fashion design)
alongside things such as an online shop, Patreon subscribers, and art
/ illustration / comic fairs. Throughout all of this, the majority of my
personal work, which for me is where the joy is, was unpaid other than in
the currency of likes, shares and comments on social media platforms.
The new industry of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) has made it possible
for me and other illustrators like me to be paid properly for the personal
work we are doing.
I have now closed down my online shop and Patreon (which had both
become much less profitable since Brexit due to spiralling worldwide
postage costs) and now I can spend all of that time in getting to grips
with this new world of NFTs. The world of illustration and NFTs have
not yet intersected to a point where commissioned illustration work has
been replaced by commissioned NFT work – brands and commissioners
are just beginning to take advantage of this new technology and
marketplace. I imagine that this will change over the next couple of
years as we see more and more adoption of the NFT technology in
these areas
You have worked on the Satoshi Faces ‘profile picture’ NFT project –
What were your initial thoughts when it was proposed?
I was delighted. I have been hovering on the edge of the NFT space,
filled with FOMO, and unable to work out how to launch myself into this
new marketplace. The Satoshi Faces team made this incredibly easy
for me and gave me a brilliant headstart into the industry and a full
introduction to the technology and mechanics of NFTs.
Satoshi Faces is what’s known as a ‘PFP project’. This stands for profile
picture, and means that customers are literally buying these to use as
their Twitter avatar. It can take a little time to get your head around this, if
you’re coming from a traditional illustration background. The NFT space
can be roughly divided into two at the moment, speaking very broadly.
There are PFP projects, or collectibles, and there is NFT art (sometimes
called crypto art) which is roughly analogous to the experience of selling
art in the ‘real world’ – these can be 1/1s or editions of any size.
Did it feel like a gamble to take the project on?
The NFT space is much more of a gamble than traditional commissioned
illustration work as payment is often given as royalties – I was offered
a percentage of primary sales. However, with the help of the AOI, I
negotiated a clause in the contract whereby I was able to receive a fairly
substantial sum up front. This was in excess of any amount I have ever
earned as an illustrator or animator.
SHILL Is1ue #30 25
Has it proved to be financially worthwhile?
Yes, absolutely. Satoshi Faces project proved to be quite lucrative for the entire
team which included me, and the exposure gained from there has allowed me
to go on and release editions and 1/1s of my own personal work as well as to
launch two collectible NFT projects of my own.
Any advice for illustrators interested in the NFT area?
The first thing to be aware of is that very little of your existing customer base
will follow you into the NFT space. I have a sizable following on Instagram and
have found that very few of those people have followed me into this new world.
It is necessary to basically start afresh.
Instagram, whilst a very useful tool for the modern freelance illustrator, is almost
completely useless in the NFT space. All promotions are done on Twitter and
in Discord, so for me it was a case of starting completely again. This can be
daunting if you have spent years building up a following on social media, but
actually is a very useful thing. I retain the traditional illustration following on
Instagram but I have now added an entirely new market (into which I probably
should have diversified anyway).
26
SHILL Issue #30
Secondly, it will be necessary to have at least a basic working
knowledge of Blockchain technology and crypto currency markets.
There are a number of different block chains on which NFT smart
contracts can exist; these all have a variety of pros and cons and are
suited to different types of projects.
One of the very nice things about the NFT space is that there are no
real experts or trained professionals. Everyone is new to this. It is a
brand-new industry and as a result it is an extremely kind and helpful
community. I personally have been helped massively by others more
experienced in the space than I, and as a consequence I am happy
to help anyone trying to get into the NFT world.
What about the environmental impact of NFTs?
For a lot of people, the most they may know about NFTs is regarding
the environmental impact of cryptocurrency and NFT production.
Headlines have focused on this aspect since the boom of the
industry last summer, and it’s true that certain blockchains are very
energy hungry.
One positive thing about this space is that it has already begun sourcing new
ways of environmentally friendly production (and done so a lot quicker than
most traditional industries which have taken years to begin any kind of climate
friendly policies and often under the duress of government policy). Yes, the
Ethereum chain uses masses of electricity but there are more environmentally
friendly chains to use (Solana being the front runner). A lot of the headlines,
however, forget to mention that actually the global banking industry uses twice
as much electricity as Bitcoin, so every time we complete a transaction on our
phone banking apps we’re all playing an albeit small part in that huge energy
consumption. A single transaction on the Solana network reputedly uses as
28
SHILL Issue #30
much energy as it would take to complete 2 internet searches.
For anyone in the creative industries, there are parts of our work which contribute
negatively to the environment: flying overseas for work, having prints and t
shirts made, ordering materials etc etc and we can make conscious sustainable
choices when we do so. The same goes for this part of the industry; it is possible
to choose a platform which promotes sustainability and is consciously working
to counteract any damage to the environment (Kodadot, Viv3 and hic et nunc,
to name a few).
Can NFTs be sustainable?
People obviously are right to be concerned about yet another industry popping
up which will contribute to energy use and a negative impact on the environment,
but the NFT space has risen to the challenge; in such an innovative industry there
was bound to be an innovative response. For example, a company in Canada
is using municipal waste to generate electricity for on chain transactions, and
developers all over the world are rewriting systems so more information can be
uploaded to the chains in one go therefore requiring less energy overall. On a
micro scale, many NFT projects use profits to offset their carbon use and you
will find numerous donations to environmental charities from projects that wish
to create an environmentally friendly space.
Where are you going with your own NFT projects?
I have been lucky enough to be able to run two separate NFT collectible projects
with my wife Sophia as project manager, as well as with two separate teams of
developers, coders and social marketers. Our first solo project, Madame Sofia’s
Oracle of Wisdom (based on the tarot) was released for free on the Ethereum
SHILL Issue #30 29
lockchain and helped us to create a big following of fans of the
artwork as well as a truly lovely community of like-minded people.
I’m currently working on a new project with some very skilled
developers (and old school friends) to diversify into the Solana
blockchain world of NFTs. Space Goats On Acid may sound somewhat
flippantly titled, but the intention behind this project is to seriously
look at the burgeoning world of research into the potential benefits
of certain psychotropic medicines. We will donate a percentage of
profits to MAPS (the Multi Disciplinary Association for Psychedelic
Research) and other centres of research into psychedelic studies for
mental health.
As a bipolar man, I’ve always been interested in finding ways of
coping with and managing my mental health. Primarily, I cope
through my creative output but there is a growing world of research
and discovery into the use of these long-prohibited molecules as
treatment for debilitating conditions such as depression and PTSD.
We’re also committed to using this new platform as a launchpad for
artists wanting to make a debut in the NFT space. As I’ve already
mentioned, there’s a certain amount of fear, uncertainty and doubt
when first getting into the NFT world and it can be a daunting
task to initiate the move yourself when you are trained in fine art
or illustration. To remedy this, we’re hoping that the success of our
initial project will create a platform and marketplace from which new
artists can launch NFT collections and gain some momentum from
the community we have already built.
We envision this as a kind of stepping stone for artists to get work in
front of the NFT collector community and make the transition from
‘real world’ to NFT space a little less stressful and daunting. We
already have on board some well known names from the worlds of
illustration and graphic art, and will be providing all of the blockchain
technology and support they need in order to start selling their work
in this exciting new space.
We’re in the early stages of our current project but people can find
more information at our website or via the project’s Twitter account.
Find out more about all of Ed Merlin Murray’s NFT projects here.
SOL
CLUB
We have managed to wrangle a highly creative team away from their new
project this week. Sol Demon Club.
To begin with, let’s learn a little more about the core team. Who they are
and what do they bring to the project?
Our team consists of four members.
Gage: Our Senior Developer has the most experience in terms of
blockchain and NFT development. He has worked on some successful
projects and has also released his own free mint project called
Cryptolizers, which is an audio visualizer NFT.
Yza: Is our acclaimed Artist who has given life to our project through her
incredible display of talent showcased through every single Demon in
the collection.
BabyDoodles: Is our Junior Developer/Marketing manager who has been
in the space for about a year and through his own personal account
provided so much to the Solana NFT community and its development.
Diabolical: Is our Community Manager/Lead Investor who has devoted
all of his time and effort to build one
of the strongest and most supportive
communities throughout all of the
Solana Ecosystem. He has been the
glue that holds the project together
and has provided tons of support to
every single member of the team.
Initially, Diabolical and Yza were
working on their own separate oneof-one
project called Mythos. They
transitioned into forming the fourmember
team after an encounter
between BabyDoodles and Diabolical
ignited the torch to develop a Solana
NFT project. They were old college
friends that just happened to meet
at the right place and the right time
and started talking about NFTs and
crypto and everything just fell into
place leading to the creation of the
Team and the Project.
Now about the Demons. How did
the idea come about and why tie it
to the manga?
Diabolical and BabyDoodles were
the ones to come up with the idea
of a demon-themed NFT collection.
They approached Yza with the
concept of a demon-themed
collection and instantly loved the
idea. Initially, we chose the theme
for its aesthetic. Over time, we
realized that we wanted meaning
and substance behind our theme.
We decided to allow our community
to define what a Sol Demon truly is.
Their answers ultimately connect
with the purpose and goal of our
manga.
The idea for the manga came
about from having our usual
fireside chats in our discord. Some
community members discussed how they enjoyed manga and thought
it would be interesting if we were to create one. Thus, we agreed that
it would be an idea we would want to pursue and thought it would be
interesting to intertwine our NFT collection with a story.
Sol Demon Club had a fairly ‘stealth’ launch. I only came across it by
accident one evening. What do you think will make Sol Demon Club
stand out and stand the test of time?
Sol Demon Club stands out from other NFT collections for multiple
reasons. Firstly, the art in our collection is by far one of the best that
Solana has to offer. We wanted to create a generative series with a
unique style and aesthetic. We hope that our art catches the audience’s
attention due to the time and care spent to make each asset. Secondly,
community members have told us that our discord differs from other
discords due to how engaged and welcoming we are with the community.
We have built not only an NFT community but have built strong lasting
relationships with each of our community members.
Sol Demon Club will stand the test of time because of our team’s
commitment to engage with our community daily. Additionally, we have
agreed to build upon Sol Demon Club long-term. The more we work on
the project, the more willing we are to create and provide more utilities
for our community. We have very ambitious goals planned for these
upcoming months.
You have a very ambitious roadmap
on your website. Quite a lot of
offerings for your holders. I would
like to focus on ‘Manga released
weekly’ for a moment. What exactly
is your team aiming to produce in
this space?
Our team’s goal is to release
content about our manga series
once per week. We hope to keep
the community engaged as much
as we can by doing this. We want
to be as consistent as possible
for our community members while
providing as much artistic content
as possible. Ideally, we would like
to release a chapter of the manga
consistently, but that could be a
possibility once we grow our project
and team.
Additionally, we plan to involve our
community as much as possible
and occasionally give them control
of what occurs in the manga.
Your 2nd Season drops alone are
incredible. Can you talk a little about
your vision for your community with
the second season?
Our vision for our community
with the second season includes
creating our type of card collection.
Essentially, we will still tie our demon
theme into this upcoming collection.
This card collection will also consist
of a limited number of special
one-of-ones. We plan to make this
collection even more exclusive than
our previous one.
Holders of the first collection will
mint this at a discounted price
compared to non-holders. The ideation process for this card collection
is still in effect as of right now, so we cannot share all the specifics.
We will announce updates and sneak-peeks to this new collection as
progress occurs.
With a 666 limited supply your project must be close to a complete mint.
Where can Shill readers go to buy from mint or secondary? What should
a minter do after buying a Sol Demon?
Shill Readers can go to our website: https://www.soldemon.club/ to
Mint a Demon NFT for only 0.66SOL and can find us on Magic Eden
after January 23rd.
After a minter buys a Sol Demon, we recommend that they join our
Twitter and Discord. We will have a verification system in place in our
discord for SDC Holders. Twitter: https://twitter.com/soldemonclub ;
Exciting times ahead for the Sol Demon Club holders. I would like to
