record is what Jack Tyro
has taken away from the
national surf champs held at
Westport’s Nine Mile Beach
over the weekend.
The Sumner 15-year-old
broke the record for the
most wins ever by a surfer
at the event, winning
the men’s and junior
longboard divisions as
well as the under-16 boys
division.
Tyro said he did not
expect to do as well as he
did and was “stoked” with
the outcome.

Lyttelton Harbour and Port Levy
areas.
The purpose of the city
council survey is to gain a better
understanding of risk tolerance
from the impacts of sea level rise.
“An understanding of
community risk tolerance
can help the community,
rūnanga and council make
informed, community-specific
decisions during phase three of
the coastal hazards adaptation
planning programme,’’ said head
of planning and consents, John
Higgins.
Phase three is collaboration
adaptation planning with
communities. Those in the
Lyttelton/Mt Herbert area will
be first. It is estimated this phase
will take at least 1.5 years to do
properly.
So far the survey, which will
close on Friday, has had more
than 100 responses.

Wharves a priority for board

Harbour wharves, Naval Point
developments, and water
supply for Okains Bay are all
top priorities on the Banks
Peninsula Community Board
project list this year.
Speaking on
the aims for
the board for
2022, chairwoman
Tori
Peden said the
board will be
continuing
Tori Peden
projects that
have already
been in the
pipeline.
“Akaroa wharf is the next
big project for us, it affects the
community hugely,” said Peden.
The hope for the Akaroa
wharf is to get the community
consultation “done and dusted”
and work through with the community
what that’s going to look
like, Peden said.
Engineers are now working
through the next steps for the
Okains Bay water supply project.
CONSULTATION: The Akaroa wharf is the next big project for the Banks Peninsula
Community Board.
After plans got delayed last year
due to Covid, Peden said they
“hope to look at delivering in the
next financial year.”
Naval Point developments are
set to continue, along with the
hope of the Diamond Harbour
wharf renewal and Eastern Bay
repairs.
Peden will also be a part of
the Coastal Hazards Working
Group as part of the Coastal
Hazards Adaptation Planning
Programme that will be starting
off with Lyttelton Harbour and
Port Levy area.
“It’s a big issue that we all have
to deal with, but we’re starting
that process and it’s an evolving
thing, we don’t know what it will
look like.”
Peden said they will be looking
at the annual plan budget
and making sure the correct
funding is there for all these
projects.
“These [projects] have big
impacts for each of our communities,”
she said
The board will be going into
elections in October. Peden
said she will be putting her
name forward to represent
Banks Peninsula on the city
council.
“Either way I hope to be
around the community board
next year,” she said.
Meanwhile, a top priority for
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board is the
Coastal Pathway which funding
has been approved for the final
stage that will pass through
Charlesworth Reserve.

of his holidays
practicing as
much as he can
for upcoming
competitions.
He hopes to
defend his title
next year and get Aaron Lock
into a national
team, which he hopes will take
him overseas.
“There’s a few comps still
coming up that I’ll be practicing
for, [next up is] the Billabong
grom series which is happening
up in the North Island,” he said.
His father, Steve Tyro, said it
was “a proud day for the Tyros for
sure.”
Tyro was not the only Cantabrian
to come away with a title from
the event.
Ava Henderson won the
under-18 girls division, Rakiatea
Tau the under-18 boys division,
Poppy Entwisle the under-14 girls
division, and Aaron Lock the
bodyboard division.

Lifeboat rescue ‘like a scary movie’

AFTER BEING stranded for
two hours, unable to swim or
hear, Natalie Crowther was
“so thankful” for the Sumner
Lifeboat crew – and her life
jacket.
Natalie, 27, and her partner
Mathew, 28, paddled on a
one-person kayak to a cave between
Scarborough and Taylors
Mistake about 6pm on Monday.
The only way to get to their
secluded destination spot was to
swim or by small boat.
While Mathew went diving for
an hour, Natalie sat on the rocks
watching the conditions change
and the sea turn rough.
When Mathew resurfaced,
they decided it was time to go
and tried to get back on the kayak
together.
“I tried to get on the kayak but
it was too rough . . . the waves
kept rolling over it and I kept
falling in the water,” Natalie
said.
A wave pushing her onto
the rocks left Natalie with a
swollen leg and after many
unsuccessful attempts of getting
on the kayak, she realised she
was in trouble.
There was no cellphone reception,
so Mathew kayaked to find
help while Natalie waited on the
rocks.
Natalie can’t swim due to being
unable to lift her left arm at a
right angle. She also has trouble
hearing and wears a cochlear
implant.
With her cochlear implant left
in the car, and wet hearing aids,
she couldn’t hear anything.
“I’m 27, and all I was thinking
was: ‘I want my mum,’ I’m a bit
of a hopeless case, I can’t hear
anything and I can’t swim.”
Natalie was stranded alone for
90min.
“It was really scary having to
sit there . . . it was almost like a
scary movie,” she said.
“It was just that feeling
of isolation and knowing I
can’t swim back, there was like
no way I could get anyone to
come get me.”
Once Sumner Lifeboat was notified
at 7.55pm, with Mathew’s
directions, they were able locate
Natalie.
Without her hearing aids,
communication was hard but
two crew members were able
to assist Natalie to swim to the
rescue vessel and she was then
taken to Sumner Lifeboat’s base.
“They were great, they kept me
warm, we had some good yarns,”
Natalie said.
The medics checked her
over. Apart from some bruises,
Natalie was okay.
“I really appreciate the life
boating team. It would have been
way worse without them.”
On avoiding incidents such
as these, Sumner Lifeboat crew
member Howard Nicholls said:
“Plan your trip, consider the
hazards . . . and try to stay within
your limits. Conditions can
quickly change . . . tell someone
where you are going and your
ETA.”
The one positive to come out of
the experience Natalie said, was
while he was diving, Mathew
caught two crayfish.
“I got home and told mum
we got two crayfish. But there’s
more …”

$33,000 needed to meet surgery goal

WITH $33,000 left to raise to
hit the goal target of $90,000,
Renee Veal’s life-changing jaw
surgery is beginning to look
within reach.
A concert, raffles and other
events are in the pipeline to
help Veal reach that target including
a concert by Lyttelton
band the Settlers.

show to raise funds for Veal is a
“no-brainer.”
“We take for granted some
things in everyday life that
other people struggle with …
[we’re] more than happy to
help out,” Horan said.
Fundraising raffles are ongoing
and have included tickets to
the L.A.B/Shapeshifter concert
in Hagley Park last weekend
along with accommodation
prizes for various places.
“We’re getting very, very
close to the finish line which
is very exciting … it’s a huge
amount of money I’m very
thankful for everyone, I never
thought I’d get this far,” Veal
said.
Veal, who grew up in Rāpaki,
needs a total jaw reconstruction
and jaw joint replacement
operation.
For the past 10 years, the
26-year-old has struggled to
sleep and eat properly and
often experiences migraines.
“The pain is pretty consistent,
some days I have really bad
days some days I have good
days,” Veal said.
Veal has significant widespread
musculoskeletal pain
due to an underlying hypermobility
syndrome.
This makes her joints hyperflexible,
causing soft tissue
injuries, bone wear, joint tear
and early arthritis.
The most disabling area of
pain is her jaw, which often
dislocates. This is known as
hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos
Syndrome.
“I try not to let it [affect me].
If I talk too much, which is
quite a common thing for me,
at the end of the day I have a
sore jaw and headaches, but I’m
used to it now and I know what
to expect,” Veal said.
The specialised jaw surgery
costs about $90,000.
Replacing Veal’s jaw will
ease her chronic daily pain and
greatly improve her life.
The public health system will
not fund Veal’s procedure, so
the community has been rallying
together since June last year
to raise the funds.
Last October former National
list MP for the Port Hills
Nuk Korako biked 720km
from Rāpaki to Bluff and
raised about $30,000 for Veal’s
surgery.
Korako and his wife
Christine are continuing
their support for Veal and
have some ideas for future
fundraisers.
Veal is overwhelmed by the
support she has seen so far.
“Just a huge thank you
to everyone who donated
or spread the word [we’ve]
been overwhelmed with the
generosity coming in from
people all over the place.
I’ve been blown away by the
kindness of people, it’s a very
humbling experience.
“It’s a huge amount of money
I’m very thankful for everyone,
I never thought I’d get this far.”
Treasures from the past: The Darra
ON THE QUIET western shore
of Ōtamahua Quail Island in
Whakaraupō Harbour one
might chance upon the ship
graveyard there.
One large skeletal wreck in
particular stands out, that of the
Darra which in its heyday was
one of the fastest sailing ships
ever built for the fabled Orient
Line.
Her strong iron frame slowly
rotting in the shallows is all
that’s left of this once sleek
clipper.
Built by the Aberdeen,
United Kingdom, shipbuilders
Alexander Hall and Co, using
carvel planks on that iron frame,
she had two decks and three
masts, was 58m in length with
a 10m beam, 6.4m draft, and a
displacement of around 1000
imperial tonnes.
The Darra launched in June of
1865 and initially sailed the British/Indian
trade routes as a tea
clipper for several years before
departing from London in 1874
with emigrants bound for the
Australasian colonies.
From there she traded coal and
timber to the Americas before
settling into the passenger run
between the UK and Australia
from 1887. It was at this time
that she set the London to Adelaide
speed record completing
the route in just 70 days.
In 1899, while berthed at
Sydney harbour, the Darra was
gutted by a fire, abruptly ending
her 35-year sailing career …
until she was bought by the
Westport Coal Company, towed
to Dunedin for a refit, and then
on to Lyttelton to serve the port’s
steamships as a coal hulk for the
next half century.
While she had certainly
seen better days, the Darra’s
rather comfortable quarters and
luxurious saloon had remained
untouched by the fire, and thus it
was that several families came to
call her home over the years.
The Eames family lived aboard
for some 12 years from around
1904, with father J P Eames
supervising his coal hulk crew
while wife Mary and their three
daughters Emily, May, and Else
made the most of their floating
home.
The Eames also hosted pleasant
dinner parties for town and
harbour guests, with the Darra’s
fine old oak dining table ending
up many years later in the Lyttelton
Museum’s collection.
Finally, in December 1950 the
Darra went into the dry dock to
be refitted one last time to play
the part of the Charlotte Jane for
the centenary celebration of the
first ships’ arrival in Canterbury.
After this last hurrah she was
stripped and scrapped with
the hull beached in the ship
graveyard. Three years later the
New Zealand Army practised
their explosive demolition skills
on her but failed to dismantle
the strong iron frame, which remains
to this day slowly rusting
in tranquil waters.

The master bedroom has amazing views, that I
would every morning set my alarm an hour
earlier to simply take in the view, sleeping at
night with the curtains open, a great size room
with double wardrobes.
The other two bedrooms get great afternoon
sun, and at times I untilised the third bedroom
as a Library, sitting room.
I spent many hours living the view, on the deck,
on the kitchen bench, in the bath, sitting in bed
in the morning and lying on the couch at night,
the room at the end of the garage to has the
most amazing view, a great place for an office.

Mercedes-Benz powers into EV market
THE MOST recent winner of New
Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild
car of the year went to Mercedes-
Benz’s EQC 400.
What was most significant about
that mantle is the EQC is fully
electric, it’s a plug-in.
In the context of things, nothing
about that is surprising. For one,
the EQC is a worthy winner, it’s
a mighty fine sport utility vehicle
and an advance in technological
engineering, while for the other,
Mercedes-Benz has indicated it is
expecting all of its vehicles to be
electric by 2030, that’s the direction
the company his heading.
How delays in global production,
caused by the havoc Covid-19 has
created, is anyone’s guess, but I can
report that the second full-electric
Mercedes-Benz model I was due to
evaluate was put on hold for several
weeks due to the pandemic here.
Nevertheless, the EQA is now
available, and if you are lucky you
will find that it is in good supply in
all colours and specification.
The EQA, as its nomenclature
suggests, is based on the concept
and size of GLA and it is available
here in just one variation, that
being designated 250. The EQA
250 drives to the front wheels only,
if you want another electric motor
sitting at the rear axle so that fourwheel-drive
can be initiated you’ll
have to wait for the EQA 350 when
it lands here in the second quarter
next year.
For the technically minded the
EQC is driven by a single electric
motor that sits transversely under
the bonnet. Power is transferred
by a fully automatic transmission
which does have pre-set steps that
can be manually manipulated
through a steering wheel-mounted
paddle shift system, should you
wish to take command over the
driveline.
Mercedes-Benz rates the electric
motor with 140kW of power and
a healthy 375Nm of torque. Take
into account that both those figures
are available from zero revolutions,
when the accelerator is pressed
you get all that energy on tap.
Consequently, the EQA feels strong
from a standstill, it will launch to
100km/h in 8.9sec.
More importantly, the EQA will
travel up to 480km on a single
charge, that supposing all the
conditions are favourable such as
elevation, load in the car, wind,
and speed at which the EQA is
travelling. I had two Southern
Motorway runs in the evaluation
car and there was never a point
where I reached range anxiety, with
a sensible driving style I believe
Mercedes Benz’s claims would be
achievable.
The EQA will charge from low to
full capacity in around 10 hours on
a domestic household charge, and
around 30min at a designated rapid
charging station to reach 80 per
cent from 10 per cent.
Since plug-ins have become
popular I’ve been a little hesitant
about electric vehicle charging on
the Kiddie property. However, after
a check and a long chat with the
electrician who services our home

I’ve been told that it is perfectly

car was loaded with a few extra
goodies taking the price to almost
$100k. In standard form it sits at
$85,500 which is still a sizeable
outlay, but you are buying a sport
utility vehicle that is adaptable and
versatile, and if you are a person
who wants to tackle the luxury
EV market then this is the car for
you. It is many models in one and
represents luxury and value all in
one package.
I presented the evaluation car
with a few tight corners in the
Selwyn district, and can report it
has all the fine handling qualities
you’d expect in any Mercedes-
Benz model, it steers directly on its
20in Michelin tyres and has firm
feedback at the steering wheel.
The suspension is a fully
independent type with spring
and damper rates that cushion
every road ripple but keep the
body tight and controlled in a
corner.
Inside, there is a heavy digital
presence along with manual
controls that have deliberate haptic
feel and they offer familiarity.
The EQA 250 was also fitted with
Mercedes-Benz’s user experience
innovation package where you can
request many functions intuitively
controlled by voice, touch or
gestures.
These are all elements that make
Mercedes-Benz stand out as a
brand, you get a lot of car for the
money and one that will also give
you peace of mind – the batteries
are warranted for eight years or
160,000km.
During that time you will have a
rewarding driving experience, not
only forgoing all of those bills you
get with petrol-engined cars, but
also the feel you get with electric
power, it is different but involving
and certainly satisfying.
Electric vehicles are fast
becoming the norm, if that
becomes the case, I’m worried the
national grid won’t cope with the
demand as drivers arrive home
and get those cables plugged in.
An acquaintance who works in
the power supply industry has told
me it could be a problem in years
to come. Let’s hope the companies
that generate the power are
switched on to this.

Cass Bay Dinghy Shelter Storage
A review of the occupancy at the Cass Bay Dinghy Shelter has
highlighted that there are a number of vessels/dinghies stored in the
shelter without the relevant authorisation under the Council’s Marine,
River and Lake Facilities Bylaw 2017. This is a breach of the Bylaw.
The Council has no records of the occupiers at spaces number 4, 13, 14,
26 and 28. These have been tagged on 8 January 2022 with a request
to contact the Council. Under section 164 of the Local Government
Act 2002, the Council may seize and impound property where that
property is materially involved in the breach of a bylaw. The Council
may dispose of this property at the owner’s risk.
If this is your vessel/dinghy or you know who is using the space,
please ask them to contact Kathy.Jarden@ccc.govt.nz to arrange
a licence. The annual fee is $165.
Those vessels/dinghies stored without permission will be
seized and impounded.
