DAY 1 RACE BY RACE

*All times BST

1:45pm: SSS Super Alloys Manifesto Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (4000m)

A strong pace is guaranteed with a fast-improving Erne River, Pic D’Orhy and Gin On Lime

usually eager to be on or near the lead. This should serve to place a much greater emphasis on

stamina, and a sound round of jumping. While acknowledging that Colin Tizzard’s WAR LORD

doesn’t boast the most enticing overall profile, it is abundantly clear that he prefers soft ground and

was sticking on nicely from the final fence when fourth to Edwardstone in the Sporting Life Arkle.

1-2-3:

The RTVi Verdict

1 WAR LORD 2 Pic D’Orhy 3 Erne River

The Super Stat

This race was first run

in 2009, so meaningful

trends are thin on the

ground. However, it

is worth highlighting

that seven of the last

eight winners, including

Protektorat (2021), were

six-year-olds.

2:20pm: Jewson Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (3400m)

The Super Stat

Owner JP McManus has

a particularly solid recent

record in this race. Defi Du

Seuil was successful for Philip

Hobbs in 2017, and Ivanovich

Gorbatov (2016), Apple’s

Shakira (2018) and Fakir

D’Oudairies (2019) have all

made the frame.

The RTVi Verdict

Pied Piper finished a close third to Vauban (had beaten that rival on hurdles debut at

Punchestown) in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham, and that is the strongest form line on

offer. This flat track should theoretically play to the strengths of this former Flat racer (previously

with John and Thady Gosden) but whether he’d truly relish the prospect of the forecast showers

is questionable. Therefore, with that a risk-factor and given JP McManus’ fine recent record in

this race a safer alternative is the battle-hardy Boodles winner BRAZIL.

1-2-3:

1 BRAZIL 2 Pied Piper 3 Petit Tonnerre

2:55pm: Betway Bowl (Grade 1) (5000m)

The RTVi Verdict

Kemboy and Clan Des Obeaux have history in the Betway Bowl but haven’t exactly been

operating at the peak of their respective powers for much of this season. Dan Skelton’s Protektorat

adores Aintree (unbeaten in two starts; Manifesto Novices’ (2021) and Many Clouds Chase (2021)) so

he should play a leading role if fully recovered from his Cheltenham Gold Cup exertions. However,

after appearing to find the trip very much on the sharp side in the Ryanair (late faller), a return to

5000m looks tailor-made for Gigginstown’s Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup hero CONFLATED.

1-2-3:

1 CONFLATED 2 Protektorat 3 Clan Des Obeaux

The Super Stat

Clan Des Obeaux

(2021) and Kemboy

(2019) will be aiming to

emulate Wayward Lad

(1985, 1987), Docklands

Express (1993, 1994), First

Gold (2001, 2003) and

Silviniaco Conti (2014,

2015) as dual winners of

the Grade 1 Betway Bowl.

Thursday 7th April Randox Opening Day

3:30pm: Betway Aintree Hurdle (Grade 1) (4000m)

The Super Stat

Nicky Henderson has saddled

the Betway Aintree Hurdle

winner four times over the last

ten years (the most recent being

L’Ami Serge in 2018). Should

the Champion Hurdle runnerup

Epatante be successful,

Henderson will become jointleading

race trainer (with Toby

Balding).

EPATANTE (second) and Zanahiyr (third) were no match for the brilliant Honeysuckle in

the Champion Hurdle, and are untested at 4000m, so must demonstrate necessary stamina

reserves. Nicky Henderson’s mare stuck on well enough after wrapping the final flight at

Cheltenham, and that coupled with her pedigree – is a half-sister to a 4000m winner – offers an

indication that she will stay. If that proves to be an accurate assessment, she should possess

the ability to fend off Aintree regular Brewin’upastorm.

1-2-3:

The RTVi Verdict

1 EPATANTE 2 Brewin’upastorm 3 Zanahiyr

4:05pm: Randox Foxhunters’ Open Hunters’ Chase (Class 2) (4200m)

The RTVi Verdict

Last year’s 1-2-3-4, Cousin Pascal (shock winner), Latenightpass (second), Cat Tiger

(third) and Clondaw Westie (fourth), are all back for more with the runner-up taking the most

interesting route into the race – campaigned exclusively in point-to-points - this time around.

However, JETT made a bold fist of things in last year’s Grand National before eventually

weakening into eighth. He arrives a fresh horse after missing the Cheltenham Festival.

1-2-3:

1 JETT 2 Latenightpass 3 Porlock Bay

The Super Stat

No horse has completed

the Cheltenham/Aintree

Foxhunters’ double since On

The Fringe (2015 & 2016), and

with Willie Mullins affording

Billaway a couple of extra weeks

to prepare for Punchestown,

that record will remain intact for

yet another year.

4:40pm: Close Brothers Red Rum Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (3200m)

The Super Stat

A different trainer has saddled the

winner every single year since 2001.

Colin Tizzard, Henry De Bromhead,

Venetia Williams, and Donald McCain are

among those trainers bidding to win the

race for a second time.

1-2-3:

The RTVi Verdict

A mass of interwoven form lines, including those featuring Dolos, Bun Doran and

Gunsight Ridge. The tentative choice is the course and distance winner THE LAST

DAY. This smooth traveller lurks on a fair mark and had looked all set to score on

return to action at Haydock prior to crashing out at the final fence.

1 THE LAST DAY 2 Dolos 3 Global Citizen

5:15pm: Goffs UK Nickel Coin Mares’ Standard NHF (Grade 2) (3400m)

The RTVi Verdict

Iliade Allen makes her first start for Paul Nicholls (bought in January for £130,000), while the

impressive Huntingdon scorer Kateira should confirm placings with Kalelula (one of three

for Fergal O’Brien). With fellow Irish raider Ashroe Diamond noted, the suggestion is the New

Year’s Day Fairyhouse scorer NAUGHTINESSE. Lorna Fowler’s charge drew comfortably clear

in the closing stages in a race which has yielded a pair of subsequent winners.

1-2-3:

1 NAUGHTINESSE 2 Kateira 3 Iliade Allen

The Super Stat

This race was first run in 2005,

with a total of nine of the

16 winners being five-yearolds.

The last three winners

- Getaway Katie Mai (2018), The

Glancing Queen (2019) and Me

Too Please (2021) – were all

five-year-olds.

Friday 8th April Randox Ladies Day

DAY 2 RACE BY RACE

*All times BST

1:45pm: Orrell Park Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (4000m)

The RTVi Verdict

Last year’s winner Tronador (now 8lb higher) may strip fitter for his comeback run in

the Coral Cup but based on recent evidence his chance isn’t necessarily obvious. Nicky

Henderson is responsible for four runners - Fils D’oudairies, Balco Coastal, Broomfield

Burg and Fred. Dan Skelton’s Langer Dan was brought down early when favourite for the

Martin Pipe (runner-up in 2021) at Cheltenham. He must enter rudimentary calculations

along with the Coral Lanzarote Hurdle 1-2 Cobblers Dream and HIGHWAY ONE O TWO,

the latter of whom represents a bang-in-form Chris Gordon.

1-2-3:

1 HIGHWAY ONE O TWO 2 Langer Dan 3 Cobblers Dream

The Super Stat

Nicky Henderson has saddled

the winner of the Orrell Park

Handicap Hurdle on three

occasions over the past ten

years – Minella Forfitness (2013),

Theinval (2015) and Rather Be

(2017). The last two winners -

Three Musketeers and Tronador

– were trained in Ireland.

2:20pm: Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (3300m)

The Super Stat

The JP McManus silks have

been carried to success in the

Top Novices’ Hurdle on three

occasions since the turn of the

century – Straw Bear (2006),

Darlan (2012) and My Tent

Or Yours (2013). McManus is

represented in 2022 by the

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

runner-up Jonbon.

The RTVi Verdict

Jonbon lost his unbeaten record when blown away by stablemate Constitution Hill in the

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and could find Aintree a sharp enough test for his liking. French

recruit El Fabiolo (Willie Mullins) is well-regarded at Closutton, but this is a vastly different test

to boxing inferior rivals in a New Year’s Day maiden at Tramore. Therefore, the logical option is

FIRST STREET. Nicky Henderson’s five-year-old has kept good company since the turn of the

year and finished off strongly behind a well-handicapped State Man in the County Hurdle.

1-2-3:

1 FIRST STREET 2 El Fabiolo 3 Jonbon

2:55pm: Betway Mildmay Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (5000m)

The RTVi Verdict

A small yet very select field. Both Bravemansgame and L’HOMME PRESSE are yet to taste

defeat over fences. Connections of the former took the sensible decision to give Cheltenham a

swerve – unsuitable ground – and their patience could be rewarded. However, in his absence,

Venetia Williams charge was a mightily impressive winner of the Brown Advisory - always had

the measure of Ahoy Senor – and looks destined for stardom in this division.

1-2-3:

1 L’HOMME PRESSE 2 Bravemansgame 3 Ahoy Senor

The Super Stat

Since inception in 1981, only

three female trainers have

saddled the winner of the

Mildmay Novices’ Chase –

Jenny Pitman, Mary Reveley,

and Sue Smith. Lucinda

Russell (Ahoy Senor) and

Venetia Williams’ (L’Homme

Presse) both harbour realistic

hopes of joining that list.

Friday 8th April Randox Ladies Day

3:30pm: Marsh (Melling) Chase (Grade 1) (4000m)

The Super Stat

Five horses have won the

Marsh (Melling) Chase twice,

with the most recent being

Voy Por Ustedes (2008 &

2009). Fakir D’oudairies

(Joseph O’Brien) bids to

become the latest member of

that exclusive group.

The RTVi Verdict

FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES was a scintillating winner of this race in 2021. Joseph O’Brien’s charge

should arrive in good order after a seven-week break since bravely reeling-in Two For Gold in the

Betfair Ascot Chase. Granted optimum conditions (are forecast) he ought to prove difficult to beat.

Assuming all goes well, the Punchestown Festival will be on the radar later in the month. The

progressive Queen Mother Champion Chase runner-up Funambule Sivola is the chief threat.

1-2-3:

1 FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES 2 Funambule Sivola 3 Hitman

4:05pm: Randox Topham Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (4200m)

The RTVi Verdict

As competitive as Saturday’s Grand National. The highly proficient Royal Rendezvous (8-15

career) heads the weights for Willie Mullins, while Nicky Henderson - another trainer with a strong

race record - supplies Mister Coffey and Fantastic Lady. However, with trainer Emma Lavelle a

dab hand with staying chasers – has saddled Classic Chase and Ladbrokes Trophy winners in the

past – the improving Kempton scorer KILLER CLOWN receives the vote.

1-2-3:

1 KILLER CLOWN 2 Batcio 3 Senior Citizen

The Super Stat

Since 2010, Peter Bowen

(x3), Nicky Henderson (x3),

Colin Tizzard (x2) and Willie

Mullins (x2; Cadmium (2019)

and Livelovelaugh (2021))

have all saddled the winner

of the Randox Topham Chase

on more than one occasion.

4:40pm: Cavani Menswear Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (4900m)

The Super Stat

Nine of the last fifteen

winners have been sixyear-old’s,

including two

- Beat That (2014) and

Santini (2018) - of Nicky

Henderson’s three race

winners during that period.

1-2-3:

The RTVi Verdict

Banbridge continued an upward curve when repelling the challenge of Cobblers Dream in the

Martin Pipe at Cheltenham. Course maiden winner Gelino Bello is reportedly a chaser in the

making for next season with this race always being the plan for the present, but in a substandard

Grade 1, a chance is taken on the Exeter scorer FAIR FRONTIERES. Kim Bailey’s gelding boasts a

thoroughly likeable attitude and promises to be ideally suited by this extra yardage.

1 FAIR FRONTIERES 2 Gelino Bello 3 Banbridge

5:15pm: Lydiate Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) (3300m)

1-2-3:

The RTVi Verdict

Lively Citizen and Hacker Des Places are at differing ends of the handicap but do have previous

- second and third respectively in the Paddy Power Imperial Cup. Richmond Lake took a heavy

late fall in Kelso’s Premier Hurdle but appeals now introduced to handicapping, with Whizz Kid is

another young hurdler to monitor. However, the suggestion is ALBERT’S BACK. The Sheriff Hutton

hope returned to form with a solid effort at Wetherby and is nicely treated on a pair of soft ground

successes in late 2020.

1 ALBERT’S BACK 2 Richmond Lake 3 Hacker Des Places

The Super Stat

For the purposes of

trends analysis this

Conditional Jockeys’ and

Amateur Riders’ contest

is a new race (first run

in 2009). Nine of the 12

winners were trained in

Great Britain, with the

other three in Ireland.
