INTRODUCTION
The Priscilla Bacon Hospice charity launched the £12.5 million fundraising appeal to build
the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge in February 2019. Within little more than a year, we were
delighted to announce that we had passed the halfway point of our fundraising target.
However, the world then faced the Covid-19 pandemic; the biggest challenge the health
and care system has faced in living memory. The pandemic did not diminish the need for
a new specialist hospice for Norfolk and Waveney; it exacerbated the existing demand.
Throughout the pandemic, the Trustees and staff have worked relentlessly on fundraising
and on developing a cutting-edge design for the new hospice.
Despite the economic climate, we were thrilled to
announce during the summer of 2021, that we had
raised more than £10 million of our fundraising target.
CYCLING STARS
Julia Gooch and Lyndon Tunmore
completed a 20-week, 5,000-mile
fundraising cycle ride around the
coastline of Great Britain. Their epic
adventure was inspired by friends
who received end-of-life care at
Priscilla Bacon Lodge.
PLANTING FOR PRISCILLA
We were very grateful to Alan Titchmarsh for judging our
lockdown gardening competition. It was one of many new
online fundraising initiatives launched during the pandemic.
He was incredibly impressed by the high standard of the entries.
This sum has been raised thanks to a remarkable groundswell of support from Norfolk,
Waveney and beyond. It represents a direct response to the pioneering care which
countless families have received at The Lodge over the last 40 years.
When Priscilla Bacon Lodge opened in 1979, it was the first hospice in East Anglia and
one of the earliest hospices in the country. When the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge opens
in 2023, it will be the first hospice built in the post-Covid era, encompassing the latest
developments in infection control. The new facility will not only meet current needs, but
will be fit for the future, with the potential for further growth and the flexibility
to adapt to changing models of care.
Work is under way on the site, so now is the time to help raise the final funds required to
build the new hospice.
The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge will be a lasting legacy to the generosity of the people of
Norfolk and Waveney, who have continued to support end-of-life care for over 40 years,
and it will be the new specialist facility so urgently needed.
It is a privilege to be the Chair of this campaign and an honour to have been able
to provide resources and most recently the gift of the superbly located 8-acre site, upon
which the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge will be built.
I hope that you will enjoy reading this brochure and learning more about the new
hospice and that you will join me in thanking the remarkable volunteers, fundraisers and
supporters who are vital to our campaign.
Thank you on behalf of the Trustees and staff.

A GIFT OF LAND
GIVING THE LODGE A NEW HOME
WHY NORFOLK NEEDS
A NEW HOSPICE
The charity is pleased to announce that the land upon which
the new hospice will be built has been given to the charity by
Robert Carter, Chairman of R G Carter and Chair of the Board
of Trustees for Priscilla Bacon Hospice.
On passing the Deeds for the land, Robert Carter said, “I am
thrilled that I am able to donate this land, on behalf of the
Carter Family in this, our Centenary year. Like my grandfather,
and father before me, the Carter Family are passionate about
the wonderful county in which we have all lived and worked.
The need has never been greater, and this 8-acre site will allow
the new hospice to flourish and help countless families in their
times of greatest need.”
Lady Bacon, Patron of Priscilla Bacon Hospice,
said on receipt of the Deeds:
“On behalf of the Priscilla Bacon Hospice
Charity, I am delighted to receive this most
significant gift of the land upon which the
new Priscilla Bacon Lodge will be built from
Robert Carter and the Carter family.
For over 40 years, Priscilla Bacon Lodge has provided specialist palliative and end-of-life care for
Norfolk and Waveney, with services delivered to 16 inpatient beds by Norfolk Community Health
and Care NHS Trust. Those who have had a loved one who has received this care, or spent their
final days in The Lodge, will know the benefit of this service and value the dedication of the staff
and volunteers.
The Lodge was built in 1979, following a county-wide fundraising appeal led by Priscilla, Lady
Bacon and was donated to the NHS after the facility was built. Since then, the population has
increased by a third, or over 220,000 residents. People are living longer and increasing numbers
are presenting multiple complex care conditions, yet the number of specialist palliative care beds
has not increased in line with demand. There is now a chronic lack of specialist beds within
Norfolk and Waveney and the necessity for the new hospice has never been greater.
The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated an already challenging position. In 2017, the worldrenowned
Cicely Saunders Institute forecast that by 2040, at least 500,000 people in England
and Wales would require palliative and end-of-life care every year. Due to the pandemic, this
level of demand has already been reached, and many people across the country were unable
to access the care they needed during 2020.
POPULATION ESTIMATES 2018 POPULATION PROJECTIONS 2041
This is a momentous juncture in realising the dream of
a new specialist palliative and end-of-life facility for Norfolk
and Waveney. I cannot thank the Carter family enough, their
generosity in gifting this prime site will help to ensure its
ultimate success. This easily accessible site, adjacent to the
Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, enables the new
Priscilla Bacon Lodge to be not just suitable for the immediate
needs of the county, but it is fit for the future with evolving
models of care.”
The 8-acre site will provide space for beautiful gardens
and grounds for both patients and their families. The new
Priscilla Bacon Lodge and the gardens have been designed
to work in harmony, to integrate the interior with the exterior.
Each of the inpatient bedrooms will have a private outside
space into which a bed can be wheeled. Day patients will
have the opportunity to take part in therapy sessions within
the gardens.

The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge will be built on an 8-acre site

capacity for 24 inpatient beds. It will offer improved day care
facilities, with a wellbeing centre and gym, as well as the space
to host a community hub to coordinate ‘virtual ward’ care for
people being cared for in their homes. The new hospice will
also be a platform for education and research into palliative and
end-of-life care, working with our partners at the University
of East Anglia’s Medical School and National Institute of Health
Research’s Clinical Research Network (CRN) Eastern, which
will support improvements in provision locally and nationally.

LEAVING A
LASTING LEGACY
FUNDRAISING
UPDATE
For over 40 years, Gifts in Wills have enhanced the experience of those
receiving care in Priscilla Bacon Lodge. Providing specialist equipment,
supporting transport costs for patients to visit home, stocking the
drinks trolley and many other touches enable families to make the
most of their remaining time with loved ones.
Gifts in Wills have made a tremendous difference to the fundraising
for the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge too. Gifts directly to this charity and
through the Support Group have already added up to approaching £3
million – a fantastic legacy to those who have benefited from
outstanding hospice care.
A Gift in your Will is a way to support care in the new Priscilla Bacon
Lodge into the future. Giving patients dignity in death, improving the
quality of end-of-life experience and supporting families through their
loss will touch thousands in the years to come.
Please consider supporting the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge through
a Gift in your Will. Leaving a gift to charity can offer tax advantages,
as well as helping to change the future of hospice care in Norfolk
and Waveney.
We have launched a free Will writing scheme to our supporters
through a selection of local Solicitors and Will Writers. Please visit
our website to learn more.

During the latter part of 2020, we launched our £3 to Break Ground
campaign, which encouraged all adults in Norfolk and Waveney
to donate just £3.00 to help us reach the necessary fundraising
threshold to commit to starting to build the new hospice.
Our appeal received a significant boost with a £1 million donation
from the John Pearce Foundation. They were inspired to get in touch
with the charity having seen a video recorded by Stephen Fry to
promote the £3 to Break Ground campaign, which received, local,
national and international attention.
We have been able to move forward with our plans to commence
the building phase of the project following this donation, along with
a number of other private commitments, and the ongoing support
from our sister charity, the Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group,
who have given £2.75 million thus far.
We are also incredibly grateful for the continued support of the wider
community, who have dropped pennies into collection tins, taken part
in fundraising challenges, sponsored friends and family, organised and
attended events, visited and volunteered at our charity shops.
Your continued support is vital for us to build the new specialist
hospice for Norfolk and Waveney.
‘In the short video I recorded, I urged you to help support
this wonderful campaign to break ground and build the
new hospice. So many of you have been so generous and
donated to the appeal, but I am stunned that the video
encouraged a remarkable donation of £1 million!’

HALEY’S STORY
Marion Powell from Horsford completed the South Downs Way 100-mile walking
challenge, raising over £3,000 for the new hospice appeal. This considerable
achievement was also poignant, as it fulfilled a promise Marion made to her
daughter, Haley Gosling.
Proud to be Norfolk’s First Certified Carbon
Balanced Publication Printer
Since 2012
Haley was diagnosed with kidney cancer on her 45 th birthday, 17 th September
2019 after feeling unwell for a short time. A scan showed a 9cm lesion on her left
kidney, which required the removal of the kidney just 10 days later. Shortly after
this, the family learned the devastating news that the cancer was already Stage 4
and had spread to her lymph nodes and lungs.
Recovery from the operation was slow for Haley, as she had blood clots and
continuous infections which further weakened her body. Happily, she was able
to go home to her family in Wymondham for a few days, before she was again
readmitted to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with yet another
infection, where she remained for 3 weeks.
The family received even more shocking news; Haley only had a few weeks to
live, as her body was so weak that treatment was no longer an option.
On 8th November, Haley was admitted to Priscilla Bacon Lodge. Marion
recounted: “Haley was very scared and was unsure of what would happen next,
as we all knew this was the last part of her journey. But from the minute we
arrived, we were greeted by warm, friendly faces and we were introduced to
all the staff on duty who would be looking after Haley.”
‘It was calm and reassuring for all of us to know
that Haley would have the best possible care.’
“Haley soon settled in and knew that she was so lucky to be cared for in The
Lodge by such wonderful staff. After a few days, her pain management was
complete, and she was comfortable and settled. A member of staff said to me:
“No one wants to be in a hospice, but this is the best place to be”, which proved
to be true on so many levels.”
On 16th November, thanks to incredible support from the staff, Haley married
her partner Kelly at The Lodge, with her immediate family in attendance. Thanks
to the Priscilla Bacon Lodge Support Group, a special trip to Cromer was arranged
for the couple, as Haley had a lifelong passion for the sea.
Marion continued: “We were so lucky to be able to stay with Haley as much as
we did, and it felt as though we were part of a wider family. Nothing was too
much trouble; the patient care is exceptional. We were always informed about
Haley’s care and medication, and there was always someone available to share
your worries or concerns and give you support, which was incredibly reassuring.
Our family will be eternally grateful to the wonderful, caring, dedicated staff
who cared for our beautiful daughter. The new hospice is desperately needed,
so the amazing staff can provide wonderful care in a better environment for
those patients and families who need it the most. Our experience at Priscilla
Bacon Lodge will stay with us forever.”
Haley was in The Lodge for 6 weeks and died peacefully on 31 st December 2019,
just 14 weeks after being diagnosed.
