Getting Around

If traveling by car, you will likely arrive in

Corpus Christi on one of three roads, SPID,

Interstate Highway 37, or by crossing the

Harbor Bridge. Once you are in Corpus

Christi, you may want to learn the local

lingo to help you get around. Here’s a

quick lesson:

SPID - South Padre Island Drive is often

referred to as S-P-I-D by the locals,

however it is more commonly marked as

Texas Highway 358. SPID will take a visitor

from central Corpus Christi to Upper

Padre Island and our Gulf Beaches.

Intersecting with SPID is Texas Highway

286, also called the Crosstown Expressway

or simply “Crosstown” by the locals.

The Crosstown Expressway will take a

visitor from SPID to the Downtown/Bayfront

area or I-37.

“The Island” as the locals call it, is the upper

part of Padre Island which stretches

for miles and miles along the southern

part of the Texas Gulf Coast. Take SPID

WHICH BEACH IS FOR YOU?

The Corpus Christi Coast boasts some of the most stunning

stretches of waterfront you could hope to find. Experience the

wonderful deep blue water, sun-drenched sand, and a great climate

nearly year-round. With more than 65 miles of beaches, there is a

beach for every personality.

Gulf Beaches

Mustang Island State Park

Off of TX Hwy 361

Families enjoy a serene environment

at Mustang Island State Park. Fishing,

camping, bonfires and birding are popular

at this State Park. Electrical and water

hookups, picnic tables and barbecue

grills; restrooms and shower facilities are

also available.

J.P. Luby Surf Park/

North Packery Jetty

Off of TX Hwy 361,

near Access Road 3A-1

Known as a hot surf spot and popular

kiteboarding area, outdoor enthusiasts

enjoy volleyball, socializing, and barbecue

gatherings here. Visitors are drawn

to J.P. Luby not only to catch a wave, but

also to cast a line for that big catch in the

surf or off the newly formed jetties of

Packery Channel.

Packery Channel

Off of TX HWY 361

Packery Channel, located on Upper Padre

Island, is a hot spot for fishing, surfing

and birding. The channel serves as a fresh

waterway for the Laguna Madre and

Corpus Christi Bay. Fishermen often report

turtle sightings in the channel.

South Packery Jetty Beach

Access off Windward Drive

This family friendly beach is less crowded

and perfect for children, and the jetties

provide great fishing, surfing, windsurfing

and kiteboarding. This beach caters

to both the family experience and the

popular beach pastime.

Upper Padre Island Seawall

Access off Windward Drive

The Upper Padre Island Seawall makes

a great spot for walking, cycling,

rollerblading, plus much more. The view

is breathtaking . . . stroll the one-mile

long Seawall, and gaze at the beauty of

the Gulf of Mexico. Short boarders are

often spotted riding the waves at this

popular beach.

Padre Island National Seashore

20420 Park Road 22

Padre Island National Seashore consists

of more than 130 thousand acres of

undeveloped dunes, grasslands and

pristine, natural, sandy beaches. PINS, as

called by locals, is the longest stretch of

undeveloped barrier island in the entire

world! Home to the nesting Kemp’s ridley

sea turtle each spring and summer…

This stretch of beach represents Mother

Nature at her best! It is perfect for the

nature enthusiast.

Padre Balli Park/

Bob Hall Pier

15820 Park Rd 22

Bob Hall Pier is an ideal

family friendly beach spot

with a parking area, carfree

zone and convenient

picnic tables. The location,

water depth, and abundance

of fish species at Bob Hall Pier

can make for an outstanding

fishing experience. The

pier also makes this beach a

popular surf spot as well. Surfers enjoy

riding the waves at this park or a bonfire

on the beach. Campsites with all the

amenities—picnic tables, cabanas, and a

bath house for visitor convenience.

Whitecap Beach

From Park Road 22, turn East

onto White Cap Blvd.

A local favorite, Whitecap Beach is the

perfect beach area to enjoy a sunset on a

beach blanket or the sunrise with a cup of

coffee. This beach is often sparsely populated

and very rarely has a crowd. Perfect

place if you are in the mood to escape.

Bay Beaches

Corpus Christi Beach

TX-35/ US-181, CC Beach exit

Known for its calm waters, Corpus Christi

Beach is the ideal beach for swimmers

and children. Its northern stretch remains

primitive and is a great, quiet place for a

jog, a stroll through nature or a pleasant

dog-walk. Enjoy the views of the nearby

attractions! Winner of the Best Restored

Beach Award by the American Shore and

Beach Preservation Association.

McGee Beach

Shoreline Blvd.

Because of its location along the Corpus

Christi Bay, the calm water is virtually free

of seaweed making this beach perfect for

children. Concession stand/restaurant/

rentals available; bring along a fishing

rod and bait for fishing from the jetties.

Also awarded the Best Restored Beach

Award by the American Shore and Beach

Preservation Association.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

GET INTO NATURE

Waves, Wings & Wildlife come natural for Corpus Christi! In this

city, there are hot spots for any and every outdoor enthusiast.

The variety of waterways, from open Gulf beaches to protected

coves, make it attractive to enthusiasts of wind & waves. Thousands

of anglers fish our waters for trophy catches. Fish the surf, bays or

piers or head out to deep-water into the Gulf of Mexico. South Texas

ranches produce the ultimate hunting excursions with native game

birds, deer, javelina, and exotics. Or grab your binoculars and go

birding in America’s Birdiest City!

Fishing

From the remote marshes of San Jose

Island to the pristine flats of the Upper

Laguna Madre and the famed trout rocks

of Baffin Bay, the Corpus Christi area offers

a level of fishing that Texas Gulf Coast

anglers either want to boast loudly about

or perhaps quietly keep to themselves. As

a coastal town, Corpus Christi is able to

offer a huge variety of fishing experiences

to travelers and residents alike. Each body

of water offers different fish to catch and

different ways to catch them.

Hunting

From brush country to grain fields to the

marshes of the Laguna Madre, the Corpus

Christi area is the hub for the South Texas

Hunter. We’ve got waterfowl, doves,

white-tail, and exotics all within a short

drive of the city center. Local ranches offer

day leases, weekend hunts or year round

leases to suit your hunting pleasure. With

miles and miles of private ranches, South

Texas is the premiere wild game hunting

destination, and Corpus Christi is ideally

placed to offer access to it.

Wildlife

Watching

Before planning a hunt, be sure to

check with Texas Parks & Wildlife for

season dates, license requirements,

and recent changes in the law.

Birding

Corpus Christi is an all-season birding

destination. There simply is no “bad day”

to bird here. Of course the birds change

with the seasons, and no day in the field

is like the one before it. So grab your

binoculars and go birding in America’s

Birdiest City! Over 500 species have been

documented in Corpus Christi, including

Brown Pelicans, rare Masked Ducks,

Warblers and Raptors. Bird walks are

held every Saturday in April at Blucher

Park. Experience Hawk Watch at Hazel

Bazemore Park from August to November

for the hawk migration.

Wind & Wave

With an average wind speed of 18

miles per hour, and over a dozen launch

sites, Corpus Christi offers world class

kiteboarding and windsurfing. Sail across

the deepest bay in Texas, while taking

in the sights and sounds of downtown

Corpus Christi. Sailboat regattas are held

every Wednesday night of the year. Home

to paddling trails and diverse water

conditions, Corpus Christi is a mecca for

kayakers. Take a relaxing ride down the

river, paddle through the white water

waves along the beach, or catch a record

breaking keeper with a rod & reel. With

288 sun-filled days a year, the weather is

always great for wind & wave sports.

Book a Certified

Wildlife Guide!

designed and created to offer a quality

outdoor experience to visitors. The only

program of its kind, the Certification

provides visitors with a well-rounded,

educated Certified Wildlife Guide, who

will leave the experience understanding

and appreciating the wildlife and habitat

of Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend.

Each Certified Wildlife Guide listed below

completed coursework on customer

service, interpretive guide training and

a 10-part online course which educated

and tested the guides on wildlife species

identification, conservation and business
