Ways through which drones can benefits Africa’s AgricultureDrones and UAV’s can speedup the land registrationprocess.Just 10% of Africa’s rural land ismapped and registered, leavinginsecure about land ownership andaffecting rural farmers more thanothers. People involved in tradesbesides farming would benefitbecause they could use the land as abackup plan if a period of economicinstability occurs instead of fallinginto poverty.Drones also provide farmers withan aerial view of their crops,allowing them to manage thembetter and notice changes.UAV’s with specialized sensors can alertfarmers to changes like normalizeddifference vegetation index (NDVI), leafarea index and photochemicalreflectance index. This allows farmers tonotice developments the human eyewould not. Using NDVI, a personreceives information about waterpressure, infestations, crop diseases andnutrient problems that may affect cropproduction. Around 7,000 Africanfarmers in Uganda have used thesedrone techniques to better manage theircrops.Drone technology is alsochanging the schema of cropinsurance.Crop insurance helps small farmersrecover when natural disasters destroytheir crops but poor reporting delayspayouts. The use of UAVs makes iteasier to quickly assess disaster damageand compensate farmers that disastersaffect. Some larger reinsurers, such asMunich Re, have partnered with UAVservice providers to improve responsetimes and reporting accuracy afternatural disasters strike. This use oftechnology to better assess farmdamages keeps farmers from falling intopoverty and allows them to protect theirlivelihood.Drones and precisionagriculture provide data thathelps farmers take inventoryof their crops and estimatecrop yields faster.Drone use also lets a farmer knowthe location of livestock and helps tomonitor fencing. Additionally, iffarmers have detailed layouts oftheir land, including size, crop healthand location, it will improve theirability to get credit, which willprovide more economic advantages.
