«Have you ever had the
feeling that a distance is
too far to walk but too close
to get the bike or even the
car out of the garage?»
The same question occurred to Wim Ouboter
on the way from his apartment in Zurich to his
favourite sausage stand, the legendary Sternengrill.
In search of a practical means of transport
for the 1-kilometre-long microdistance, the Swiss
entrepreneur invented the Micro Scooter. In his
attempt to turn his vision of micro mobility into
reality, there was only one problem: how to bring
such a product onto the market with little
money and no experience in this industry?

1997
Wim wanted to work together with the car manufacturer
Smart and place a Micro Scooter in every
boot. Unfortunately, the project failed because the
delivery of the city car was delayed due to technical
problems.
1998
After the initial stumbling blocks with Smart, Wim
found a suitable distribution partner in the sports
brand K2. Together they brought the three-wheeled
kickboard onto the market and celebrated huge
sales success.
However, his distinct spirit of innovation quickly led
Wim to a new idea: the threewheeled kickboard. It
should be easier to ride than a skateboard, but still
convey the same cruiser feeling.
In 1997 Wim founded his own company, Micro
Mobility Systems AG, with the proceeds from
the kickboard sales. After that, his two-wheeled
Micro Scooter also made the big breakthrough,
with 80.000 of them sold daily, totalling more
than 30 million in one year.

than 500 factories copied Wim's Micro Scooter.

2001
Wim’s strategy: innovation. He developed the
Mini Micro, a colourful version of the kickboard for
children. Further innovations followed, and today
Micro offers over 50 mobility products for children,
teenagers and adults that are successfully distributed
in over 80 countries.

2013
In 2013, Micro launched its first e-scooter, the
emicro one. The compact and light electric scooter
with motion control has won numerous awards.
2015
In 2015, Wim's sons, Oliver and Merlin, started
the development of the electric city car Microlino.
More than 27.000 reservations have already
been made worldwide. The production started
in 2021.
2020
2020, Micro has launched a new line of e-scooters
on the market. The valuable experience gained in
the field of electromobility since the introduction
of the first emicro one has made a significant
contribution to the new product line.
Micro was ranked fifth most innovative company in
the "Europe" category by Fast Company magazine.
Winners in previous years include companies such
as Apple, Novartis and Spotify.

How much car do you really need for daily driving?
Wim, Oliver and Merlin Ouboter want to know.
Most cars are too big and heavy for the way they are
being used. On average, there are only 1.2 people
sitting in a car, driving just 35 km per day. But how
should the ideal vehicle for this sort of daily driving be?

2015
The three Ouboters realised that the perfect vehicle
would be a cross between a motorbike and a car.
During their research, they stumbled across the 1950's
bubble cars. Inspired by them, they started making
the first designs for the Microlino.
Together with a Swiss university, the designs and
technical specifications were finalised. The next
step, building a prototype, was carried out in China
in the second half of 2015.
After several months, the prototype finally arrived
in Switzerland, but then something unexpected
happened: the Microlino fell off a forklift and was
completely damaged. This setback didn’t stop the
three founders and they repaired it just in time for
its premiere at the Geneva car show.
2016
In March 2016, the Microlino was presented to the
public for the first time and was a huge success:
within two days, more than 500 reservations were
received.

In April 2016, the three Ouboters partnered with
Tazzari, an Italian electric vehicle specialist.
Together, they planned to bring the project from
prototype to series production.

2020
2020, Merlin and Oliver received a place on the
"Forbes 30 under 30 Europe " list. The business
magazine selects young, creative leaders and
innovative entrepreneurs who have a decisive
influence on the economy and society.
2021
The series production will start in the first quarter of
2022 in the newly founded business unit Microlino
Italia. By the end of 2021, more than 27.000 people
had already reserved a Microlino on the website
microlino-car.com.

MICROLINO 2.0
IAA MOBILITY 2021
Our visit to IAA Mobility 2021 was a huge success. The
interest in the Microlino was enormous, and our
booth was well visited throughout. Even the CEOs of
VW, Mercedes and Renault stopped by. During the
show, we were able to increase Microlino reservations
to over 27.000 and reached an estimated 50 million
media contacts.

MADE IN ITALY
CECOMP: MICROLINO PRODUCTION
AND DEVELOPMENT PARTNER
The Microlino will be produced in our facilities
in Turin, Italy, together with the expertise of
CECOMP. The Italian family company CECOMP
has supported the development and industrialisation
of the new Microlino 2.0. The company
was founded in 1978 by Giovanni Forneris and
was involved as model and prototype builder
for many iconic vehicles such as the Lancia
Delta Integrale and the Golf 1. The company is
now run by the second generation, Gianluca
and Paolo Forneris, and has five sites in Europe
for prototypes, small and medium series vehicles
and aluminum body parts production for
MacLaren, Aston Martin or Renault, among
others. The first Microlinos will roll off the
production line in the first quarter of 2022.

selected materials. At every stage of the
development and production process, each
new product undergoes strict quality control
with various test procedures; this guarantees
that all requirements of national and international
safety standards are met.
We are constantly striving to improve our
product range and the entire Micro value chain
to make it more sustainable. In this context,
among other things, the recycling and the
reduction of plastics in our products and packaging
is a high priority. We are also gradually
expanding the use of FSC-certified paper for
our packaging.

Contrary to today's disposable society,
Micro products are made for a long life. We
guarantee a unique worldwide repair and
spare parts service for every product. Our
own global sales and service network
ensures professional maintenance of our
products, which has a positive effect on
their life span and conserves resources. The
handlebars of our kids’ products are
height-adjustable and grow with the child –
from the first steps to preschool age. A Mini
Micro 3in1, for example, is in use for an average
of four years. Compared to a McDonald's
toy, which is used no more than a few hours,
or a Barbie doll, which at best the child
plays with for a year, this number is considerable.
Additionally, the kids move with our
products outside in the fresh air, which promotes
physical health and motor skills for
many years.

We want to change the way
society thinks!
OUR STRATEGY: PRIVATE E-SCOOTERS INSTEAD OF RENTALS
As the inventors of micro mobility, we have
been convinced for over 25 years that a
scooter is the ideal means of transportation
for cities – light, compact, safe and sustainable.
In contrast to the latest developments in the
field of free-float e-scooter sharing, we
pursue the strategy of the personal electric
scooter. In our opinion, the current business
model that originated in the USA is neither
sustainable nor safe. An ETH study published
in January 2022 proves that privately owned
e-scooters, in contrast to sharing services,
actually improve the eco-balance. Rental
scooters are on average in use for only 29 days
before they end up in the garbage bin. In addition,
it is dangerous if completely inexperienced
riders use the e-scooters in highly frequented
inner city areas. Those who have
their own e-scooter also assume responsibility
for its condition and handling. Thanks to their
low weight and simple folding, our e-scooters
can easily be combined with public transport
and taken into the home.

Our electric city car Microlino not only
convinces with its adorable appearance, it is
also extremely environmentally friendly. Compared
to an annual driving distance of 15.000 kilometres
in a petrol car, the Microlino can save
2.491 kg CO2, which corresponds to 20 flights
from London to Paris or 0.01 flights to the
moon and back. And that's not all – due to its
light weight, the Microlino consumes 65%
less energy than a conventional electric car.

The plastic problem of the oceans...
Around 10 percent of the plastic waste in the
oceans comes from maritime industry. Every
year an estimated 640.000 tons of nets and
other equipment are left in the oceans. Some of
this waste is collected in landfills and then
recycled to produce our sustainable Micro Kids
Scooters. The ECO product line is another step
towards sustainability for Micro. We have not
only been selling products for more than 25
years that can be passed on over generations
due to their longevity, but have also set ourselves
ambitious sustainability goals that we
will successively expand, for example in the
enlargement of the ECO product range.

MICRO DESIGN LAB
Since Micro Mobility was founded, innovation
has been an integral part of the corporate
DNA. True to its vision of a «better urban lifestyle»,
Micro now offers over 50 different mobility
products for children, teens and adults and is
the global market leader in the premium segment.
The range extends from the popular children's
scooter to stylish electric scooters and the
latest coup, the Microlino. The heart of this
tireless innovation process is our Design Lab
in Küsnacht ZH; here new ideas are tinkered
with and prototypes are created with a lot of
passion and dedication.
In this interview, Yannick Lissanda, Head
of Micro Design Lab, tells us where he gets
his inspiration for new products and what
makes Micro's product design unique.
Your story about how you came to Micro is a
rather unconventional one. Would you share it?
After completing my bachelor's degree in
industrial design in Lausanne, I gained my
first professional experience at greutmann
bolzern designstudio in Zurich. Afterwards
I worked for Adidas for two years and also as a
freelance product designer on various projects.
Since I was 12 years old, I have been an enthusiastic
Micro fan and have always done my shopping
with the Micro Flex. One day I came up with
the idea that it would be much more practical
if I could attach my shopping bags to the scooter
instead of having to drive home with one
hand, so I built a prototype and wrote an email
to Micro. Everything then went very quickly,
and after two conversations I was able to start
as a product designer at Micro shortly afterwards.
I have been here for five years now and run the
Micro Design Lab.

Where do you get the ideas and inspiration
for new products?
Curiosity and observation are essential. People
and nature are my greatest inspiration. If I get
stuck when working on a product, then I go to
the place where it will later be used and the
ideas then come on their own. And when
I wear my favourite grey sweater and have
the hood up, my colleagues in the office know
that my head is smoking as I process new
ideas. Then it's best not to disturb me.
What is the biggest challenge when designing
a new product?
Expectations.
From whom?
«That's too expensive.» From the engineers:
«It won't last, it won't work.» From marketing:
«It doesn't fit our image.» Then there are the
sales people, the factory and, of course, the
customers, who are ultimately the most
important. I want to satisfy all these groups,
which is not always easy.
What distinguishes the product design of
Micro? What is special about it?
I would say that Micro's product design is
characterised by a certain simplicity and
longevity. The success of the Mini Micro, for
example, is the timeless design that has –
with only small modifications – endured for
years and still resonates with the same target
group. In the very fast-changing scooter market,
this is very rare.
The difficulty lies in doing justice to all the
different parties. I hear from the management:

E-SCOOTERS – THE NEW MOBILITY
When discussing the top mobility trends
nowadays, one will inevitably hear about
autonomous driving, electric or hydrogen
cars, sharing and micromobility.
While one can disagree about some
trends, micromobility has earned its
rightful place in that list. Micromobility’s
main driver was e-scooters and that was
clearly visible in the sharing sector where
e-scooters replaced bicycles almost
overnight. But how could this product
category become so dominant in the market
when just four years ago e-scooters
were not known or often confused with
electric motorcycles?
E-SCOOTERS
They are efficiency beasts:
For the same distance you use around
nine times on foot and about four times
by bike as much energy.
They are theft-proof:
They are lighter, easier to carry and can
be taken home or to the office, where
they are protected against theft.
They complement public transport:
E-scooters can be folded together
and used in combination with public
transport.
Pure driving fun:
No matter what age, people are fascinated
when they stand on an e-scooter
for the first time.

SO WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD
FOR E-SCOOTERS?
Having originally gained renown as a
sharing device, e-scooters are not bound to
the success of their sharing platforms.
Sharing was merely the catalyst for e-scooters
to spread around the world and gain
acceptance as a mode of transport. Their
users are starting to realize that sharing is
expensive and owning one makes more
economic sense. From a more general
perspective, e-scooters will increasingly
become an alternative for bikes and e-bikes
as they are the cheapest electric mode of
transport and more practical in their usage.
Who knows, we may one day teach our kids
to ride an e-scooter instead of a bicycle.
RETHINKING THE E-SCOOTER BUSINESS
MODEL
Consumers no longer need to be convinced that
e-scooters are great. All it takes is one ride to
turn skepticism into belief. Instead, it is now a
matter of convincing companies, universities, cities
and public transport operators that micromobility
solutions can be a positive extension of the services
they already offer. In an industry where players
are just figuring out how to stand out from the
competition, being different - really different -
could be the key to success.

Who is doing what in the company?
Wim: My two boys, Oliver and Merlin, are in
charge of the Microlino project and the
marketing team of Micro. My lovely wife
Janine is the big boss because she handles
the finances of Micro. As the founder of
Micro, I’m not as involved in the daily business
but strategically oversee the many projects of
Micro and Microlino as well as product
development.

What are the advantages and disadvantages
when the whole family is working in the same
company?
Janine: For us work and private life go hand
in hand. At dinner we often discuss the latest
work topics together. Sometimes it can get
loud especially with our two hotheads Wim
and Merlin. I try to mediate between two
parties so that at the end of the day we can
all relax together in peace on the couch.
Since when are you, Oliver and Merlin, involved
in the business?
Oliver: Since we were little, we were the first
guinea pigs for all the new Micro products. So at
a very young age, we were already learning a lot
about Micro and our opinions were always taken
seriously by our parents. At school when the
whole freestyle scene started to pick up, my

brother and I began selling custom stunt scooters
out of our little workshop in the cellar of our home.
Now with the Microlino we want to take Micro a
step further, from two- to four-wheeled mobility
products.
What have you learned from your parents and
vice versa?
Merlin: I think we learned a great deal about entrepreneurship
and management from our parents.
Most importantly, our parents have always talked
to us as equals no matter the age difference. For
me that’s the secret ingredient for a successful
family business. On the other hand, we teach them
how the young generation is sometimes handling
things in a completely different way. The Microlino
team is a relatively young team but at the end of
the day you need the same leadership skills as 25
years ago.

All good things come in threes
In autumn 2019, the German automobile manufacturer
launched the BMW E-Scooter, building on the
success of its previous cooperation with Micro. The
lightweight and compact electric scooter complements
the mobility range of the BMW Lifestlye
collection with the existing BMW City Scooter and the
BMW Kids Scooter, both also developed in cooperation
with Micro.

Delights not only presidents
Peugeot and Micro are pursuing a joint urban
mobility strategy by integrating the Peugeot
Micro e-Kick into the boot of the SUV 3008.

way, it was the former French president,
François Holland, who was the first to have a
look at the world premiere of the hybrid electric
scooter at the 2016 Paris Motor Show – and he
was visibly impressed.

Since the announcement in 2019, a lot has
also happened with the newly acquired
brand Chilli Pro Scooter. For example, Chilli
can now be found in 20 countries, where our
partners are strengthening the brand in the
long term and helping Chilli to gain international
recognition. With marketing activities tailored
to the target group - such as cooperation
with stunt scooter schools or support for
pump tracks - as well as appealing, innovative
products, Chilli is able to stand out from the
competition on an international level.
Championships in Denmark alongside Archie
Cole, our English Pro Rider. We are convinced
that our riders will also score there with their
excellent skills & tricks.
Our two entrepreneurs Wim Ouboter and
Panos Hadjinicolaou have hit the nerve of

Statistically, an average of only 1.2 people sit in a car for a daily
distance of 35 kilometres. Driving a big car is like taking your
luggage with you every day even though you travel for only a
few days a year. Sounds stupid, right? Unlike conventional
cars, the Microlino is not oversized, but rather incorporates the
advantages of a car with those of a motorcycle and therefore
has become the iPad of the mobility world. Not only does the
Microlino combine the best of two worlds, it is also more ecofriendly
: it needs approximately 60 % less energy in production
and usage, due to its light weight and fewer parts required.

In 2008, we expanded our mobility range and
aligned our vision of uncomplicated and unconventional
micro mobilility with the travel business.
This is how the Micro Luggage was created,
a piece of rideable carry-on luggage
with a built-in kickboard. A few years later,
we got a call from US DJ Steve Aoki with the
request to develop a Micro Luggage with a
built-in sound system. The idea instantly
appealed to us and the exciting partnership
resulted in the innovative Micro
Steve Aoki Luggage Sound2go with integrated
bluetooth speakers. In order
to serve all age groups in the travel
segment, in particular the youngest
ones, the development of the Micro
Trike and Luggage Eazy was a logical
consequence. During product

What began as an underground movement in the
French-speaking part of Switzerland quickly developed
into a worldwide trend. With a multitude of breakneck
tricks including double backflips, a new sport was
born. Micro reacted immediately to the new trend
and developed the first stunt scooter together with
riders from Montreux. Micro Freestyle Scooters were
met with great interest in the scene. This is due on one
hand to the functionality of the products and, on the
other hand, to the fact that Micro takes the input and
requirements of the young riders seriously and integrates
