Possum chase didn’t
• By Kristie Boland
IT WAS FAR too much for
Harvey the jack russell and
his mate Sam, the labrador
cross, to resist – the sound of
something rattling in a bush.
So they did what jack
russells and labradors do –
pursue it. But the problem was
the rattling sound – a possum
– was down a cliff.
But for Harvey it nearly all
turned to custard when he
charged down the cliff which
was covered in thick, wild
berry bushes.
He had been out walking
with his owner Catherine
Venrooy who was with her
friend and Sam on the Māori
Gardens track at Governors
Bay after work on Tuesday,
when the drama unfolded.
prices
forecast
to hold
steady
A BUOYANT economy and
demand for property for
newcomers to Christchurch
should ensure the city’s booming
residential housing market
defies a forecasted nationwide
downturn.
The prospect of the Reserve
Bank hiking interest rates, coupled
with negligible gains from
migration, has prompted a warning
about falling house prices.
New Zealand’s house prices
are among the most expensive
in the world relative to incomes,
propelled by record gains from
migration in the years leading up
to Covid-19, followed by a further
boost when interest rates were
slashed in 2020 and the Reserve
Bank pumped billions of dollars
into the financial system to maintain
confidence.
“We would not be shocked to
see a meaningful drop in prices
through 2022,” said Matt Henry,
Forsyth Barr’s head of wealth
management research.
Henry said the sharp increase
in prices over the past two years,
booming construction and low
migration changed the dynamic
between supply and demand.
OUR BUSIEST, highest, longest
and newest streets revealed – and
more.
There are almost 4000 roads
that are owned by the city
council – 3938 to be exact.
Combined, they stretch for
2439km. That’s greater than the
distance from Cape Reinga to
Bluff (which is a mere 2058km).
Alphabetically speaking, the
first street is Abberley Cres and
the last street is Zinnia Way.
As well as the public roads
there are a number of private
right-of-ways that the public are
allowed to use, but are not legal
roads.
Here’s a list of fun facts about
our streets, from the widest
to the shortest, to the newest,
busiest and narrowest.
Widest
The widest single carriageway
road in Christchurch is
Whitmore St which is 25m wide.
However, Linwood Ave is the
widest dual carriageway at 45m.
This includes the cycleway and
the planted central median.
Narrowest
At the other end of the scale is
Wells Back Rd off Charlton Rd
on Banks Peninsula – it’s a petite
2.5m wide.
Busiest
Christchurch’s busiest street
for foot traffic is Cashel Mall.
It sees an average 8000–9000
pedestrians per day. For vehicle
traffic Moorhouse Ave is the
busiest, with an average of 55,000
vehicles a day.
Longest
Our longest road is Summit
Rd, which runs from the top of
Evans Pass through to Gebbies
Pass – a distance of 28km.
Shortest
Alcester St off Durham St at
the South City Mall entrance
clocks in as our shortest legal
road at just 35m long.
The city council is considering
Financial well-being
strong in Canterbury
NEW RESEARCH shows
people living in Canterbury are
amongst those who have the
strongest financial well-being in
New Zealand.
The ASB Bank and University
of Melbourne data revealed Nelson,
Tasman, Marlborough and
Canterbury had savings balances
that were much higher than the
national ASB customer median
of $3032.
Tasman residents had savings
balances that were 31 per
cent higher than the national
median, while people in Nelson
were 25 per cent higher.
Gisborne and Southland had
the weakest financial well-being,
with ASB customers in those
regions about 40 per cent more
likely than average to be in
overdraft.
ASB said incomes were highest
in Wellington, but Aucklanders
saved more, with median account
balances 18 per cent above
the national median.
ASB chief executive Vittoria
Shortt said having a regular savings
plan would help provide a
valuable buffer through a potentially
challenging time ahead, as
the Omicron variant of Covid-19
our joints and the independence
that they give us.”
With a granddaughter coming
in March, Murray believes in
the importance of using natural
compounds to support healthy
joint function.
“I really want to make sure
my joints and muscles get the
best support possible as I age. I
want to be able to play and stay
active with my grandkids and
great-grandkids. We have the
information and science to know
what we need to do or take these
days to make that possible.”
Murray learned about a joint
and muscle support cream,
called Koru FX, from a family
member. Like with all products
that promise to support joints, he
was skeptical.
“I was shown the product by
my son. He thought it may be of
interest. I was skeptical but since
then I’ve seen Peter Williams,
Irene van Dyk and dozens of
other people recommending
Koru FX cream.”
Murray pointed out that even
with the tens of thousands
of happy customers, it’s
important to try it for yourself
to see if Koru FX is right for
you.
“I really do recommend the
cream for joint and muscle
support. I really take my time
to review things. Koru FX is
fast acting, long lasting and
natural which I like.”
You can head online or visit
your local pharmacy to give
it a go. It’s become NZ’s #1
fastest growing topical cream.
Koru FX contains only highquality
essential oils that have
been rigorously tested to ensure
only the best makes it into the
bottle.
Oils like calendula, arnica,
manuka and black pepper, along
with 12 others provide the perfect
formulation.
Countless doctors and
pharmacists are recommending
Koru FX cream due to its natural
ingredients. The makers of the
Always read the label and use as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional. Koru Nutrition Ltd, Christchurch.
cream, Koru Nutrition, describe
it as a “natural cream that’s
suitable for daily use on joints
and muscles.”
If you’re looking for a fastacting
and long-lasting, natural
product; harnessing the benefits
of essential oils, then Koru FX
is for you.
Homicide victim’s family pays tribute;
alleged murderer appears in court
• By Anna Leask
THE FAMILY of Colombian
expat Juliana Cayena Bonilla
Herrera have paid tribute to
her days after she was allegedly
murdered in her Addington home.
The 37-year-old was found
dead in her flat on Grove Rd on
Saturday night.
Police arrested a 35-year-old
farm worker who is reported
as being a neighbour of Bonilla
Herrera on Tuesday night.
He was granted interim name
suppression when he made a
brief appearance via video link
in the district court yesterday.
He was charged with murder
and remanded in custody pending
an appearance in the High
Court on February 18.
Stuff reported Bonilla Herrera
had been subjected to an extremely
violent attack in her home,
suffered knife wounds, and is
believed to have been restrained.
Friends became concerned
when Bonilla Herrera failed to
show up for a planned hiking
trip on the weekend.
As they come to terms with
their loved one’s death, Bonilla
Herrera’s family in Colombia
posted a video slideshow of
photos the 3D designer as a
memorial.
A relative said a lot of people
admired Bonilla Herrera for her
“value” and because she decided
to make her life in New Zealand.
She moved here about 10 years
ago to study and fell in love with
the country.
“Although you were far from
your loved ones you always had a
positive and strong attitude facing
challenges,” her relative wrote.
“You were not only a great professional
but a tireless warrior.
“You taught us that there are
no impossible goals. You lived
to the fullest enjoying this world
with a lot of attitude full of affection
towards others and always
being a great daughter, sister
VICTIM: Bonilla Herrera moved to Christchurch in 2016,
where she developed an interest in hiking and photography.
and friend.
“I join the pain of your mother,
your brothers and other relatives.
We will always remember you.”
Another relative said Herrera
was “beautiful”.
“The sky is yours, everything
is more beautiful there. We love
you, we’ll see each other again,”
she wrote.
Detective Inspector Scott
Anderson said police were not
seeking anyone else in relation to
the murder.
“I’d like to thank the community
in and around Grove Rd
for their assistance in helping the
investigation team achieve this
result in such a relatively short
period,” Anderson said.
“It will hopefully give some
relief to Juliana’s loved ones,
particularly her family back in
Colombia, at this sad time.”
Police continued to examine the
scene yesterday and expect to be
there until the end of the week.
A post-mortem examination
was carried out yesterday.
Market still bullish
• From page 1
“Some of us think declines
are highly likely and that these
could be significant; others are
more sanguine,” he said.
“What there is agreement on is
that the market does look more
vulnerable today than it has for a
long time.”
A survey of mortgage advisers
conducted by economist Tony
Alexander on behalf of mortgages.co.nz
released this week
showed most mortgage brokers
were reporting fewer investors
and first-time buyers, as well as
a reduced willingness by banks
to lend.
Several New Zealand banks
are expecting house prices to fall
this year, with BNZ forecasting
a drop of more than 3 per cent
this year, with a smaller drop in
2023.
Bayleys Canterbury general
manager of sales Rachel Dovey
agreed increasing interest rates
and tougher scrutiny by banks
during the loan approval process
could soften the market.
However, the market was still
bullish, and likely to remain so
deep into 2022.
“There’s too many positives
going on. Employment is high
here. You only have to look at
our construction and building
sector. There’s really good
employment, that’s one of the
drivers why people are moving
from other regions,” she said.
“While those things are in
play that holds your market. If
there was high unemployment
it’d be a different story. We’ve
got too many good constants in
our favour.
“Interest rates could cut some
buyers out, but small increases
won’t bottom out the market.
Apart from that it’s quite hard to
see where those falls would come
from.”
Dovey would not be surprised
if prices flattened out in
Auckland, but property values
in Christchurch and the Canterbury
region should continue to
thrive.
“I think we’ve probably
got a little way to go yet. Our
campaigns and auctions are up
around 50 per cent on the year
prior. There’s really good momentum
even though we’ve gone
into red (traffic light setting),”
she said.
“We’ve seen quite a lot of
people moving down here from
around New Zealand and it’s
hard to see that momentum
won’t continue.”
“If you look at areas like
Selwyn there’s been so much
development. A lot of sections
and house packages have really
created another market.”
RAID: Police enter a Rangiora printing business where a
Signwriter accused of
making vaccine passes
• By Kurt Bayer
POLICE HAVE swooped on
a Canterbury signwriter who
has allegedly been making fake
vaccine passes.
Officers yesterday raided the
printing and graphics business,
which operates out of a shed at
the rear of the property on Rangiora’s
Ashley St.
It’s understood one person has
been arrested.
Local resident Peter David Solvander
has been named by Stuff
as the man accused of making
fake passes.
A sign on his front fence says
“Stand up New Zealand!”.
He allegedly told a Stuff
reporter, who was given a fake
vaccine pass, that he was doing it
so people could “see their loved
ones”.
In October 2020, Solvander’s
son James Harrison Solvander,
33, was jailed for more than five
years over the death of a father
who died while out biking with
his daughter during the first Coronavirus
nationwide lockdown.
Drugged driver Solvander
crashed into Clint Hoeben, 48,
and his daughter, 14, as they
cycled near Fernside in North
Canterbury on April 2, 2020.
Hoeben was killed and his
daughter suffered minor injuries.
IT’S A THANKLESS task
often subject to a time limit, so
the city council needs regular
recruiting drives to replace
parking compliance officers who
have been subject to abuse.
To maintain a staff of 25 in the
unpopular role, the city council
has revealed it must recruit up to
three times a year as compliance
officers tire of verbal and occasionally
physical altercations
with members of the public.
A nationwide
survey of threatening
incidents
involving officers
indicated the
city’s staff fared
relatively well,
though that was
no consolation
for the city council’s
transport
Thomas
operations manager Steffan
Thomas.
“Serious incidents resulting in
injury are very rare but parking
compliance officers do experience
incidents of abuse and assault
from time to time,” he said.
“The council takes very
seriously any abuse of, or
assault on, our parking officers
and all incidents are reported to
police.”
Thomas, who identified
outside schools and areas of
shopping malls as high risk
areas, cited one example where
an electric scooter was pushed
into an officer by a member of
the public. Another officer was
injured when they were forced
off balance and fell.
Between February 2020 and
December 2021, the city council
recorded 39 instances of abuse,
four assaults, and two cases of
harassment.
On one occasion an officer
filmed an intimidating incident
Officers are equipped with
body cameras to record incidents
while they also receive
conflict resolution and situational
safety training.
“Staff are provided with workplace
support and can access
counselling if it is required,”
Thomas said.
Asked if staff turnover was
high, Thomas said they recruit
about two or three times a year.
The city council’s longestserving
officer has been on the
job for 33 years, though that was
an anomaly.
Elsewhere in New Zealand,
there had been a significant
increase in the number and
severity of assaults on officers
in Wellington since the first
Covid-19 lockdown last year.
“This has had an effect on
the overall turnover of staff in
the last 10-12 months as people
decide that coming to work just
to be verbally abused every day
is no longer rewarding,” a city
council spokesman said.
Hamilton City Council
reported a 65 per cent increase
in incidents of anti-social behaviour
against staff when comparing
the 2018/19 financial year to
the most recent.
“We have observed a noticeable
increase in verbal abuse
over the past year, and nearmisses
experienced by wardens
crossing at signalised pedestrian
crossings,” said acting city transportation
unit manager Robyn
Denton.
In Dunedin a city council
spokesperson said one officer
was elbowed by a member of
the public, while another had
the comment “I hope you die,”
yelled at them.
Rise in number
of noise
complaints
THE CITY council is asking
party organisers to be mindful
of their neighbours as it deals
with a significant rise in noise
complaints.
In November and December
2021, the city council received
3022 noise complaints – 645 more
than it received in the same two
months in 2020.
“One of the factors contributing
to the increase in noise
complaints is that more social
events are taking place in people’s
homes,’’ city council head of regulatory
compliance Tracey Weston
said.
“With traditional entertainment
venues only able to host limited
numbers and many large events
and concerts cancelled, people
have been opting to party at
home. That has led to an increase
in the number of noise complaints
coming through to us.’’
Weston says many of the
complaints could be avoided if
people organising parties follow
these guidelines:
•Let neighbours know
beforehand and stick to an agreed
finish time.
•Control the music level and
move everyone inside after 10pm.
•Avoid large gatherings of
people outdoors.
• Remind guests to leave quietly.
Brady burglary investigators briefed
on handling diplomatic immunity
• By Matt Nippert
POLICE investigating burglaries
of the Christchurch home
and office of a prominent
researcher into China’s foreign
influence campaigns formally
asked spy agencies for help and
received briefings on how to
handle assertions of diplomatic
immunity.
These revelations come after
the Ombudsman forced police
to release some documents after
Weekend Herald requests for
information under the Official
Information Act were repeatedly
declined over the past three years.
Canterbury University professor
Anne-Marie Brady complained
in February 2018 of unexplained
break-ins of her home
and office, prompting a year-long
inquiry by police headed by
the secretive and high-powered
National Security Investigations
Team.
Since the publication of Brady’s
Magic Weapons paper in 2017 –
mapping out China’s influence
in New Zealand through NGOs,
political donations and board
appointments – she has been a
2018 public speech in Auckland.
Documents from the police
file for Operation Brady show
staff working the case were
briefed in May 2018 on how to
handle assertions of diplomatic
immunity from embassy or
consular staff, with instructions
to keep the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs informed of any such
developments.
Diplomatic immunity is a
long-standing legal principle that
shields embassy and consular
staff from prosecution or lawsuits
in their host country.
In December 2018, police wrote
to the New Zealand Security and
Intelligence Service regarding
Operation Brady and outlined
complaints from Brady the case
may be one of espionage: “She
Chinese Government is orchestrating
these offences . . . Any
intelligence or information you
may be able to provide would be
appreciated.”
The investigation apparently
stalled in February 2019 after a
year of police work, which also
involved liaising with Interpol
and Brady’s office at the University
of Canterbury being swept
for bugs – with a declaration the
case was “unresolved”.
A summary of the
investigation prepared when the
case was put on ice and released
to the Weekend Herald in 2020
noted: “Police retain some
forensic samples that may lead
to an identification in the future.
Police has no evidence as to the
identity of those responsible for
the offences reported.”
Chu a no-show:
Board briefings
• By Fiona Ellis
A CITY councillor previously
criticised for low attendance at
staff information sessions has
applied her no-show approach to
community board briefings.
City council
data has revealed
Riccarton
Ward councillor
Catherine Chu
did not attend
any of the 23
Catherine
Chu
briefings held
last year for
council staff to
share information
with the Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board.
Board chairman Mike Mora
dubbed her lack of attendance
“disappointing.”
However Chu, who as a councillor
receives a $114,130 salary,
deemed briefings unnecessary.
“Meetings are where things
actually get done,” Chu told The
Star yesterday.
Last year Chu received
backlash from the Avonhead
Community Group for attending
34 of a possible 86 council
briefings from October 25, 2019,
to June 29, 2021.
A lot of briefings were a waste
of time, she told The Star
at the time.
Briefing attendance by other
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board members
during 2021 ranged from 12
attended by Gamal Fouda to 22
attended by Mark Peters.
Mora said briefings were an opportunity
to be informed about
important issues.
“Those briefings are to bring
the board members up to speed
with information that we need to
do our jobs.
“If they don’t attend a briefing,
well then how are they actually
going to have a better feel for
what it is that’s coming up that
we may or may not need to make
a decision on?”
However, Chu said her lack
of attendance at briefings did
not impact her role as a public
representative. Briefings were
informal discussions for those
who required more information
in addition to what was provided
in staff reports, she said.
“I am highly engaged with our
residents whether it would be
through the public participation
agenda item during our meetings
or one on one meetings with
residents.”
Brady ending ‘unsatisfactory’
• From page 9
Key agencies and the Wellington
embassy of the People’s
Republic of China declined to
address questions about Operation
Brady or whether diplomatic
immunity was ever asserted.
Bin Zong, spokesperson for the
Chinese Embassy in New Zealand,
this week issued the first
PRC comment on the case since
Brady revealed details of the
break-ins during testimony in
February 2018 to the Australian
Senate about foreign interference.
“The claims regarding the case
are groundless and absurd, and
the Embassy will not dignify
such claims by any response,”
Bin said.
A spokesperson for police reiterated
a statement first issued in
February 2019 when they declared
their probe had run out of leads
to follow: “The investigation into
Brady’s claims remains open and
is unresolved at this time. Police
continue to assess information in
the case. However, we will not be
discussing specifics regarding the
investigation.”
A spokesperson for spy and
security agency NZSIS said
their agency on occasion supported
police, but did not wish
to elaborate on their involvement
in Operation Brady. “The NZSIS
has a long-standing approach of
not commenting about specific
operational issues or individual
cases,” the spokesperson said.
Former police officer Tim
McKinnel said the inclusion of
a diplomatic immunity briefing
was “unusual” for a burglary
case, and raised the possibility
the investigation was considering
the possibility suspects or persons
of interest may be entitled to
such protections.
OPERATION BRADY:
The People’s Republic of
China declined to answer
questions about the
operation. PHOTO: GETTY
“I don’t think there’s protection
from an investigation being
conducted, but it can make it difficult
to advance an investigation
to a prosecution,” McKinnel said.
Brady told the Weekend Herald
she was unable to add further information
about the information
released, but noted: “It is telling
and significant that police were
briefed on diplomatic immunity.”
McKinnel said Operation
Brady being left in limbo was
likely to be unsatisfactory for all
parties.
“Certainly from the victim’s
perspective, it’s deeply unsettling.
Brady is a pretty credible
complainant, and you’d like to
think that if anything that could
have been done to resolve it has
been done,” he said.
“But because of the sensitive
nature of issues related to diplomacy,
it maybe be difficult for the
police to disclose: It does leave
Brady in a difficult position.”
Brady herself described the
burglaries as “shocking” and
their purpose appeared to be
intimidation, but was supportive
of actions taken to date by police
and NZSIS.
“No valuables were taken,
including a large sum of cash
and jewellery left out in plain
sight. Only research-related items
were taken, such as laptops and a
burner phone,” she said.
The Ombudsman’s ruling on
the Weekend Herald complaint
about the failure to release
more information largely sided
with police. The Ombudsman
cited provisions in the Official
Information Act intended to
protect the integrity of criminal
investigation, and said police
opposed releasing even the
titles or descriptions of some
documents.
NEWS
• By Gill Bonnett
A CHRISTCHURCH family
who has been granted residency
under the Government’s new
fast track scheme say it feels like
they’ve “won $500 million”.
Michelle Shaw, her husband,
Mic, and two children – Scarlett,
14, and Jarrad, 19 – were allowed
to apply last month in the first
phase of the scheme.
Mic, a senior software
engineer, got the in-principle
approval on January 7, making
them among the first to get approval
this year.
Michelle, who works in a vaccination
centre, said when she
got a message from him while
she was at work, it took a moment
to sink in.
“I was like: ‘Oh my god, you’re
lying’ – still not believing it.
After I’d done my shift we told
the kids, and we were just all
ecstatic, absolutely ecstatic.
“Then we sent our passports
in and I think it was Monday
morning I was at home and Mic
comes walking in and he said
‘it’s official’ and gave me a hug,
we got the visas up on screen and
it says ‘indefinite’. I cried a little
bit. And I got back to work and
everybody was just absolutely
thrilled to bits for us, and all our
friends are as well.”
Originally from the United
Kingdom, the family-of-four are
among 5000 people who have
been granted residency under
phase one of the scheme. Almost
30,000 have so far applied for the
one-off residence visa, and up to
165,000 may be eligible by the end
of the year.
Migrants are eligible if they are
settled (three years-plus in New
Zealand including a minimum
number of days), a skilled worker
(based on wages) or scarce (in
short supply).
Immigration statistics show
migrants from India topped the
approvals in the scheme’s first
month, followed by South Africa,
Philippines, UK, and Sri Lanka.
One in five applications was
rejected.
In March, the second phase
of the scheme will start, with
hopes systems will work better
than they did initially. Families
whose expressions of interest
included older teenage children
– who could not work or go on to
university as domestic students
without a residence visa – were
among those prioritised in the
first applications in December.
“[The residence approval] actually
means Jarrad can get a job
now or if he chooses to it opens up
other avenues for him like setting
up his own business or anything
like that,” Michelle said.
“Scarlett was very excited but
nothing really changes for her
because she’s still in high school.
But it just means we can all settle
as a family.”
Non-residents have been
restricted from buying property,
and many are looking forward
to moving on from rentals once
their visa is through.
Mic said a rule change covering
mortgages at the end of last
year had slowed down their
plans to do that. “But probably
within six months, we’ll have
bought a house.”
Michelle said they had celebrated
their immigration news
with friends in Christchurch and
Auckland.
“It could not have happened at
a better time for us as a family.
And it just means we can just
relax just that little bit more. And
you know, we can start setting
the kids off on a nice future.”
OUR PEOPLE – CELESTE DONOVAN
A passion for making a positive difference
Celeste Donovan might
not have a Pier People
bumper sticker on her
car, but New Brighton
and the remainder of
the Coastal Ward are
close to the ear of the
city council’s newest
elected representative.
She discusses her first
couple of months
in local government
politics with Chris
Barclay
You grew up in Sumner and
then moved to New Brighton,
so you’ve always been a seasider
by the looks of it. Have you
always been attracted to the
water?
I grew up doing surf lifesaving
from five to 14. At that stage I
was quite competitive. I also
played rugby for the Sumner
boys’ team. I was a flanker. I was
a little bit dirty, I’ve got three
brothers so you had to learn to
stand your ground.
Have you ever lived inland?
I lived in Wellington for a
while and Dunedin, which I
guess are both coastal too. I
lived inland in Japan, about 45
minutes from the coast.
How did you end up in Japan?
When I graduated the
first time [from Canterbury
University] in 2004, like a lot
of Kiwis I thought I’ve got to
get out of New Zealand and get
some international experience.
The Japanese have the JET
[Japan Exchange and Teaching
Programme] where you could
teach English. I did that for
three years. I was teaching in
an international high school
and there was a lot of high-level
curriculum stuff so it was a good
opportunity to get something
quite rewarding out of it.
Where was the school in
relation to Tokyo?
I was in a place called Fukui,
which is known for its nuclear
power plant and crabs. It’s a
couple of hours from Osaka.
If you were living closer to the
plant you got an extra stipend
but I wasn’t close enough. We
used to joke about it, we thought
it was really strange. No one said
no. I was 23-24 so I wasn’t too
worried about anything.
Your Japanese is ozappana
(sketchy) these days, but you’re
still proficient in another
language. When did you learn
to sign?
Sumner Primary and Van
Asch College had a couple of
teachers looking to integrate
sign language into mainstream
classes. Our class was effectively
a trial so we learned sign
language from the age of five or
six right through to the end. One
of my good friends, Nirvana, is
profoundly deaf so I know how
bad my sign language is when we
met up.
Regret not going to London
instead of Japan and enduring
Sunday sessions in The Church
or giving the Circle Line pub
crawl a crack? Oktoberfest?
A little bit, but only because
the world’s changed. I started
to do more travelling in the last
few years. I was aiming to do a
trip a year. I’d been to Europe,
I went to India and then Covid
hit. A previous job was based
in London. I worked remotely
[in Christchurch] but I had
an opportunity to visit my
employers over there and tacked
on some trips.
Any locations stand out?
Amsterdam. I only spent
2-3 days there but I liked their
approach to public transport, the
fact you can bike everywhere.
I just found it a really easy city.
Berlin was the same. I had a train
pass so you got to see it through
their public transport systems.
Norway was great as well.
Back to work business. What
was the job with the HQ in
London? Sounds interesting.
I worked for Vertic. They
work on international treaties
around disarmament. I was
doing research into the legal
implementations of treaties
around North Korean sanctions.
That indicates an interest
in politics and a global view.
BRIGHT FUTURE: New
Coastal Ward councillor
Celeste Donovan is
upbeat about the future
of the New Brighton Mall
shopping precinct. The
mall was popular when
it was the only shopping
location in the city open for
Saturday trading.
When did that interest develop?
Were you on the student council
at Linwood High School?
I think I was on it but I wasn’t
interested in politics at all, I
played snooker at high school.
I went straight to university
and tried to figure out what I
wanted to do. I kind of wish I
went travelling. When I went
back [to UC after Japan] I did
international relations, a bit of
international law and politics. I
had another bite at the apple and
did masters in the same area,
looking at New Zealand’s foreign
policy. We had 9/11 when I was
at university and I was doing
American politics. It was just so
topical to be studying something
when it’s happening. I kind of
got drawn into it.
Your focus has subsequently
narrowed to local government
after three years working
alongside the Green Party in
Parliament. Tell us about your
time in the Beehive.
I was working on helping
develop a lot of the outreach
campaigns in the community
for things like climate change
and housing. I was employed
by Parliament, although I was
working for the Greens. I worked
a lot with [List MP] Eugenie Sage
and [co-leader] James Shaw. He
had a strong interest in areas
I was focusing on like youth
engagement and climate change.
Like dad Brian you became
involved in the New Brighton
Residents’ Association when it
returned after a post-earthquake
hiatus. Did that experience
prompt your successful bid
to replace James Daniels as
councillor for the Coastal Ward
when he stood down?
The more active you are at
a community level, the more
you can see the value of local
government and the impact it
has on people’s everyday lives.
In Wellington you can work at
a policy level which does have
a broad impact. I guess I have
a passion for having a positive
impact on people’s lives.
OUR PEOPLE
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Donovan’s coastal ties go back to childhood
• From page 14
You still had reservations
about joining six other
candidates for last October’s byelection,
didn’t you?
I’d said I’d never do it because
I’d worked for people in
Parliament and realised it can be
a tough job. You open yourself up
to a lot of criticism. You have to
have reasonably thick skin and
I thought I’m happier to work
behind the scenes.
So why take the plunge?
A couple of people asked me
to run and I said ‘No’. They were
persistent and talked me into it.
They were a huge amount of help,
but now I’m aware running as
an independent . . . it’s a pretty
major learning curve, even
if you’ve worked in politics. I
underestimated how much work
was involved in campaigning.
When you stood you
downplayed your involvement
with the Greens. Is that a fair
summation?
That’s because I was running
as an independent, and that’s
not to say I don’t share a lot of
philosophical alignment with
the Greens. You should be
transparent about where your
politics are but I wanted to make
it clear I was running on an
issue-by-issue basis. One of the
reasons I ran as an independent
is because one of the barriers to
progress at council, in my view, is
there are voting blocks. I see the
way people vote at council and
I sometimes wonder if they’ve
been told to vote that way or
if they genuinely believe that’s
in the best interests of the city.
Within the community there
seems to be a strong feeling that
it’s important to be independent.
I’m not a member of the Greens,
I was for a year when I was at
Parliament.
Climate change gets you hot
under the collar, doesn’t it?
That’s a particularly big interest
of mine. It’s something I didn’t
hear spoken about a lot from
some people on the council.
Staff are very on board but some
people prefer playing politics
instead of really putting the
interests of the communities first.
ALL BLACK: Celeste Donovan with Canterbury and All
Black halfback Graeme Bachop before she plays
for Sumner.
We need to be looking at what we
can do to build climate resilience
as a city.
There’s nothing you can do
about the prevailing easterly
breeze at New Brighton
unfortunately, but tell us about
other non-weather-dependent
measures to rejuvenate the focal
point of your jurisdiction.
There’s quite a bit happening
around the commercial core.
You’ve got the housing going on
the school [Grant McKinnon’s
65-unit development at the old
Central New Brighton Primary
School site on Seaview Rd]. The
tendering process for Beresford St
[to develop council-owned land]
has closed. Hayden Clavis has a
development in the mall. A lot of
the energy’s gone into revitalising
the central city. Now developers
and the council are looking at
other urban hubs that really need
our attention. New Brighton has
been prioritised. I think we’re on
the cusp of seeing some really
big stuff happening. We’ve got
the hot pools, the foreshore is
looking good. Now it’s just about
focusing on the mall. I’ve put
forward through the budget
process to bring money [$70,000]
pushed out to 2027-2028 brought
forward to do up the mall.
BEACH LIFE: Donovan (far
right) with fellow junior
members of the Sumner
Surf Life Saving Club.
The Donovans also
believe in the future of New
Brighton from a financial and
development standpoint, don’t
they?
My family’s building a
residential and commercial
development [in New
Brighton]. I’d been involved in
various aspects of the project
management side of things and
then stepped back during the
[by-election] campaign. That’s
been handed over to my brother.
You were elected by securing
1654 votes from a turnout of
38.8 per cent of eligible voters.
One of the roles you’ve adopted
at council is to try and boost
interest in local government
by helping establish the
Engagement Working Group.
It’s about finding ways for
people to engage in a way that
works in with their lives. Asking
people to take time off to go to
council meetings is not realistic.
There are ways to make it more
accessible. We’ve live streamed
the [Waitai-Coastal Burwood
Community Board] meetings
from November. You can watch
it without leaving their house or
watch it later on, go back and ask
questions after the fact.
Apparently Christchurch
can be quite cliquey. Any
issues transitioning from
Sumner across the estuary to
Southshore and points north to
Brooklands?
I think I’d been in the area long
enough (since 2014). It does take
time for people to get to know
you but once they have your
measure then they really back
you. Having a certain amount
of existing relationships was
helpful.
Does having a Pier People
bumper sticker help?
I don’t actually have one. It is
an oversight.
You were sworn in last
October 19, pretty much 12
months before the next local
government election. It’s early
days, but has the job turned out
as you anticipated?
More or less. I’ve been playing
catch-up, I came in two years
into a three-year term. I’ve either
been at council meetings or
briefings. I realised the more I’m
across different areas – council
is a hugely complicated beast
– the more effective I’ll be. The
hardest part is getting used to not
working behind the scenes. That’s
been quite a mental adjustment.
It [a public profile] didn’t
motivate me to run. Some people
enjoy that, I don’t particularly,
but it’s part of the job.
Have you contemplated
returning to Parliament in the
future, as an MP?
At this stage I have no interest
in that. You can have a greater
impact on a broader stage,
but you lose community level
engagement, which is the bit I
really enjoy. You’re travelling all
the time and you don’t really get
to spend time with individuals
and communities.
Council business ramped
up this week, did you venture
outside of Christchurch during
the break?
I was over on the West Coast.
Like the Coastal Ward it’s full
of characters. I really enjoy
their straight-up nature, you
know where you stand. They
have a similar approach to New
Brighton. It’s not a particularly
pretentious place.

OPINION 21
Healthcare system needs improving, but
Government’s changes not the answer
Act Party
deputy
leader
Brooke
van Velden
gives her
views
on the Government’s
health reforms
YOU MAY not have heard of the
Pae Ora Committee. It’s new, set
up to sweep away district health
boards and change healthcare
from one national system to two.
It’s part of the Government’s
Treaty-at-the-heart-ofeverything
approach. I’ve been
sitting on the Pae Ora committee
hearing from healthcare
providers concerned about these
changes that will affect every
hospital, clinic, and community
nurse in the country.
Any other time, it would be
the biggest news in Wellington.
However, because the Government
chose to blow up the
healthcare system in the middle
of a pandemic, these changes
have largely flown under the
radar. Here’s what I think you
need to know.
Even before Covid, our health
professionals were stretched to
the limit, with many would-be
patients on waiting lists. There’s
a need for better accountability,
more hospital beds, and better
access to life-saving medicines
so more New Zealanders can live
longer, healthier lives.
There needs to be change, but
the Government is focused on
changing administration. It isn’t
asking basic questions like will
this get better treatment, faster,
for more patients?
They’re getting rid of the 20
DHBs and introducing two new
entities, Health New Zealand
and the Māori Health Authority.
Basically, we’ll have the
same healthcare system, except
the administration will be
centralised and split in two by
co-governance.
SHORTAGE: New Zealand desperately needs more healthcare workers.
The reforms are meant to deal
with the health inequalities and
disparities among population
groups found by the Health and
Disability System Review, such
as Māori, Pasifika, people with
disabilities, and rural populations.
While well-intentioned, I
believe it risks being divisive
and ineffective. For example, the
newly established health system
principles say the health system
should “provide opportunities
for Māori to exercise decisionmaking
authority on matters of
importance to Māori” but there
is no requirement for the same
decision-making authority on
matters of importance to anyone
else.
Some of our worst health
problems are in rural and remote
areas far from major hospitals,
such as babies being born in ambulances
on the side of country
roads.
We can improve the health
system but I think separating
New Zealanders into groups
with different rights is not an
exercise in health, it’s an exercise
in politics. Doctors and nurses
are trained to get the best result
for the patient in front of them
without discriminating. To me,
this reform puts identity before
health.
I argue that’s the strange truth
of the Government’s plan. It
changes everything and nothing.
From the point of view of a patient
nothing much will change.
You’ll still turn up to a crammed
emergency department or
after-hours clinic needing to
wait for hours only to be handed
the same medicines as before.
Practical things, like workforce
planning to figure out what happens
when ageing health workers
retire, hasn’t been given priority.
Access to medicines? That’s “out
of scope”.
We see more people marching
on Parliament protesting for
access to life-saving medications
than we do on any other issue.
We like to think we’re a firstworld
country. But every other
first-world country has so many
more medicines available than
us.
In fairness to the Government,
Pharmac is having its own
review. Except, that review
explicitly rules out funding of
medicines. A lot of people think
pharmaceuticals are important,
but somehow the Government
manages to ignore them.
It’s not possible to achieve improved
health outcomes without
having the skilled workforce to
deliver it.
We desperately need more
doctors, nurses, and midwives
to care for our most vulnerable.
Nearly half of all GPs plan to
retire in the next 10 years but
there aren’t enough doctors
being trained to fill the gaps. The
healthcare workers we do have
are feeling burnt out. I’ve heard
from an ICU nurse who quit
this year at the age of 27 from
the stress of being stretched so
thin.
Yet the bill doesn’t prioritise
workforce training, development
or retention. Administrative
reform, by itself, won’t provide
another GP down the road, train
another mental health nurse, or
deliver a midwife to rural New
Zealand.
In rearranging the deckchairs,
I believe the Government has
forgotten to put people first.
With the majority this
Government has, there’s no
doubt these reforms will go
through before the election.
At that point I hope the
Government changes.
At that point, it will be time
to solve the tangible problems
that effect patients of every
background. How do we ensure
there is a health professional
available, equipped with the
best medicines, supported by
Last week’s article Big brother
is watching you highlights how
CCTV is a tool for police to
help solve crimes.
It also poses how a surveillance
society has “. . . a chilling
effect on their (people’s)
freedom to live their lives.’’
Some say only criminals
have something to fear from
cameras, yet I look at “supersurveilled
London’’ with all
their cameras, they are unable
to prevent crime and make
London safe.
Governments using facial
recognition cameras with a social
credit system, control their
citizen’s every move.
Some people question if
we are taking the first steps
towards a social credit system
through having our steps
tracked through bluetooth, QR
codes and vaccine passes.
Is this is a conspiracy theory?
I only know that I feel a little
less free every time I scan in. –
Drownings
I am totally saddened by the
35 drownings over the holiday
period.
I agree with Alan Roberts letter
(The Star, January 20), that
removal of teaching swimming
in our primary schools, plus
removal of school swimming
pools,by the fifth Labour Government
has to be one of the
dumbest of political decisions
for our country.
Learning to swim is an essential
‘life skill’ for all New
Zealanders, and as such is
just as important in life as is
teaching reading and writing at
school . . . all three of which are
key survival skills.
It would be great to again see
full governmental support for
the teaching of swimming in
our primary schools.
My logic is this has to be an
essential survival skill for all
young New Zealanders. – A
White, Wigram
Vaccinations
If I was going to hospital, unlike
D Downward I would want
the staff to be fully vaxed.
If it was the case that things
got so bad that Covid-positive
nurses had to work the fact they
were vaccinated would mean
they were not as sick as the
unvaxed.
There are only 35 GP doctors
who are unvaccinated and
about two per cent of nurses
showing most in the medical
profession are in support of
vaccinations.
Personal freedom must be
guarded but it should not be
above personal responsibility to
support the most vulnerable . –
optimistic we would be able to
deal with the “pressing issues” of
climate change and sustainability.
I share his confidence. As a
community, and as a council,
we are taking some bold steps to
ensure we are in a better place to
cope with the changing climate
and the tests it will set us. But
there will always be a need to do
more.
TRAINING PROGRAMME
weeK Three: Knuckling down and some tips on nutrition and weight loss
In week 3 the early excitement of the City 2 Surf project you have undertaken is wearing off. You may not have
sensed a big improvement in fitness levels yet and other commitments are getting in the way of training. After
your determined start the first doubts set in: “Can I do this?” This is the time to knuckle down. You need another
2 or 3 consistent weeks before you notice a significant improvement in fitness and energy levels and perhaps
some noticeable weight loss. Once that happens you will be well on your way. The best time of day to exercise
is early morning. It is good to get it out of the way and it will energise you for the rest of the day. Later in the day
you might just feel that little bit of fatigue or things crop up which will tempt you to say “tomorrow is another
day….” This can easily become habit and before you know it you have lost one or 2 training sessions every
week. Of course you might have a good reason for not being able to get out early. Other times of the day for
your training session are perfectly fine too but good planning is required. A light snack (toast/bread, fruit) before
your early morning training session is generally recommended to assist your blood sugar levels. This also applies
if you exercise later in the morning or afternoon. Breakfast or a meal after training will assist with replenishing
energy stores. Exercising before going to bed might keep you awake for a while if you are a light sleeper.
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and 1
session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can
still talk. If you can’t talk you are going too
fast and you are likely to come to a grinding
halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
If you need to lose some weight, then this
training programme will help you. But it
will only do so if you pay attention to your
nutrition at the same time. Healthy choices
include bread and or cereals for breakfast,
sandwiches or a salad for lunch and an evening
meal consisting of plenty of vegetables with
fish, chicken or lean meat. Pasta and rice are
also good staple foods for active people.
One helping and avoidance of rich desserts
will assist your weight loss. A healthy snack
mid morning and afternoon will help you get
through the day. Fruit is always an excellent
choice. Avoid fatty foods and snacks with
refined sugars. If you need help with your
nutrition or weight loss this might be a good
time to have a consultation with an expert, like
one of the Sports Clinic nutritionists.
on behalf of the team at sports Clinic
Passion for bowls overcomes pain
• By Chris Barclay
A SUPPORT brace for an
arthritic thumb on her right
hand is the only sign four
decades of lawn bowls is taking
a physical toll on evergreen,
ground-breaking, national
champion Bev Morel.
Her passion for the sport is
so strong, Morel, a sprightly 80
years of age, is even reluctant to
blame countless hours of practice
and play for the discomfort.
“I don’t think it’s about bowling
(the arthritis), it’s an old age
thing,” she said, before one of her
regular training sessions at the
Elmwood Park Bowling Club.
Morel did cite one bowlsrelated
irritant when revisiting
a highlight of her illustrious
career, a fourth national title, the
pairs crown with Sandra Keith at
Burnside earlier this month.
It took almost a decade for
Morel and Keith, who bowls for
the Allenton club in Ashburton,
to play alongside each other at
national level so the octogenarian
was anxious not to let the
side down.
“I hadn’t (played) lead for 20
years, I usually skip so I went
down to the club virtually five
days a week,” she said.
“I practiced throwing up the
jack and leading two hours a day.
I was quite sore after a couple of
days of kicking bowls back (for
the next end), I wasn’t used to
that. When you’ve done that for
five days it can be quite wearing
on the old body.”
The exertion was worthwhile
though as Morel and Keith
capped an unbeaten campaign
by comfortably beating 26-yearold
Tayla Bruce and fellow
Blackjack Clare Hendra 20-8 in
the final.
Morel’s fourth national title
dovetailed with ticking off a
‘bucket list’ item she composed
when stepping back from representative
bowls in 2014.
“I wanted to have a game of
pairs with Sandra. We’d played
against each other a lot, we’ve
played in rep teams but we’d
never actually played together.”
Fortunately Keith’s other
potential playing partners were
marooned in Australia due to
Covid-19.
“I rang her up and she said:
‘Yes Bev, it pays to be persistent’,
it was just meant to be,” Morel
said.
One of 18 siblings, Morel took
up bowls at the Linwood club
when she was 42, where she followed
the lead of New Zealand
international Marie Watson and
transitioned from indoor bowls
to outside.
“As soon as I did that,I didn’t
want to play indoors any more, I
was hooked,” she said.
Morel is not only Bowls New
Zealand’s oldest champion, she
has also claimed a record 37
Canterbury Centre titles, starting
with a triumphant four in
1984.
She claimed her first national
title in 1995 with Watson,
Raelene Peters and Denise Page,
in spite of a rookie error she can
smile about nowadays – delivering
a bowl with the wrong bias
so it deviated from the target
area.
“I just told myself I had to play
NO END
IN SIGHT:
Bev Morel is
determined to
keep bowling
until she can
no longer
walk, at which
point she
will spectate
the sport she
loves.
BOWLS NEW
ZEALAND
the next one well, and I rolled a
toucher so I redeemed myself,”
she said.
While each national title is
special, her success with sister
Theresa Woodham at Dunedin’s
Logan Park in 2007 was particularly
treasured because their
brother Brian succumbed to
cancer during the tournament.
“That was a very emotional
win. We went and saw him
before we went and we knew he
wasn’t going to last more than a
few days.
“Brian told us to go and win
the title. When he did pass we
missed the funeral. We stayed
and played, there was no other
option but to win,” said Morel,
who also shared the fours title
with fellow Elmwood players
Pam Phair and Lois Grey.
Bowls runs in the family to
an extent, Morel’s father Alfred
played, as did her late brother
Brian and her eldest son Kevin.
Her youngest sister Diane has
started getting serious about the
sport in her 70s.
Morel, who worked as a nurse
aide at Burwood Hospital, has
always been health conscious,
the basis of her longevity.
“I had a personal trainer for
15 years but once Covid came
I didn’t want to go back so we
bought a treadmill. I normally
do half an hour at a time and
I have a massage every three
weeks,” she said.
Morel, who prefers team
formats over singles, and Keith
pledged to defend their crown
and the elder stateswoman has
no plans to retire.
“I’m going to keep playing
until I can’t walk and if I can’t
play I’ll be coming to watch. I’ll
have my walker (frame) with
me,” Morel said, accentuating
the social side of bowls.
“You play all day then can
go in the clubhouse and have a
couple of drinks and a laugh. It’s
really great for people that are
on their own. They’re always in
good company, they’ll always
know there’s someone to talk to.”
Canty Rams sign Brown after encouraging debut
THE CANTERBURY Rams
roster for the National Basketball
League season continues to
showcase local talent with
Walter Brown re-signed after an
encouraging debut in 2021.
A 21-year-old shooting guard,
the former St Bede’s College
student is the fourth player to
be contacted to new coach Judd
Flavell’s squad.
Brown, who helped guide Canterbury
to the national under-19
title in 2019, impressed former
Tall Black international Flavell
with his raw talent and defensive
IQ.
“We are determined to
bring high energy to the
league and Brown is an important
part of this formula,” Flavell
said.
Rams general manager Caleb
Harrison expected Leithfieldraised
Brown to flourish under
Flavell’s coaching.
“We recognise potential and
see Brown’s experience as the
perfect fit for Judd,” he said.
“Judd is a legend in skill development
and growing young
talent. He will help take this new
talent to the next level – and we
can’t wait to see how Walter rises
to the occasion.”
Brown’s retention follows the
re-signings of Taylor Britt, Max
Darling and Joe Cook-Green,
who all developed their careers
in Christchurch.
Cook-Green was re-signed
late last week with the guard
returning to the city from Perth,
where he has been playing in the
second-tier NBL1 competition
with the Eastern Suns.
The guard debuted for the
Rams the same year before heading
to the US college system,
where he played for Texas Wesleyan
University before returning
home in 2020.
Highlander hybrid worth the wait
I WAS LOOKING forward to a
Toyota Highlander hybrid drive
with much enthusiasm.
The fact it was delayed due to
the most recent Covid-19 lockdown
made the wait much longer
and only served to heighten the
anticipation.
That may seem like an odd
statement for someone who has
often admitted it took some time
to warm to the hybrid concept,
but Toyota’s most recent technology
and the inclusion of the
Highlander into the hybrid programme
here is most intriguing.
It’s no surprise that has happened,
Toyota has long offered
hybrid options in most of its
domestic market models, and
the Highlander, even though it is
sourced from the United States, is
no exception.
Toyota New Zealand has just
landed a new Highlander. I
evaluated the model most buyers
would relate to in the past – the
naturally-aspirated petrol V6
variant – in these columns in
October. This evaluation focuses
on a high grade hybrid Limited,
it comes in at $66,990, an extra
$3k over the Limited V6. Bear in
mind that there are three hybrid
models and two V6s, the entrylevel
GXL hybrid starts at $63,990
and finishes at $74,990 for the ZR
variant.
If there is one car that has
changed my perception on hybrids
it would be Toyota’s Camry
of the late-2000s onwards, it just
seemed so normal to drive and
if you didn’t look at the energy
consumption gauges you would
hardly tell there was a hybrid
driveline under the bonnet. Bear
in mind as well, it is much the
same driveline that is fitted to
Toyota’s ever-popular RAV4 and
several Lexus models.
The Highlander hybrid is one
smart piece of kit. Of course, the
fact it is a seven-seat sport utility
vehicle hasn’t been compromised,
it is a big car and welcomes its
occupants in family-friendly
manner, and if you have the rear
row of seats folded flat there’s a
cavernous load carrying area.
Of course, in Limited specification
the Highlander is loaded
with goodies, it is plush with its
leather trim (heated front seats),
satellite navigation, keyless entry
and ignition, radar cruise control
and electric tailgate. It also shares
a five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program safety rating.
Toyota’s hybrid driveline hasn’t
changed much in concept since
it first arrived in Prius, of course,
development over the years has
meant is has become far more
adaptable, more powerful, more
economical and the petrol/electric
process far more seamless.
Effectively there are three
petrol combinations for Toyota’s
hybrid series – its Yaris Cross gets
a 1.5-litre petrol engine, the Prius
as we have known it from day one
INFORMATIVE: Comprehensive display graphics are well
integrated into the centre dash.
TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID: The Limited model is joined by two other hybrid variants
starting at $63,990 and ending $74,990.
gets a 1.8-litre engine along with
Corolla and CH-R, the RAV4,
Camry and Highlander all have
a 2.5-litre petrol engine. All are
hooked to the Synergy Drive system
that effectively is what makes
it a hybrid.
One of the reasons I was fascinated
with the Highlander hybrid
concept was through wondering
if the combined output would
be enough to transport the big
vehicle and a load of occupants
without struggling. Well, I’m
pleased to report even with a kerb
weight of just over two-tonne and
a full load, the Highlander drives
without feeling burdened.
Toyota claims power outputs
of 142kW and 242Nm from the
2487cc petrol engine, add in all of
the power from the front and rear
motors and you’ll find the outputs
are more than satisfactory.
Yes, the Highlander hybrid has
two electric motors, one which
works normally like it would in
two-wheel-drive hybrids, the
other sits over the rear axle providing
drive so that a traditional
Highlander buyer would keep
in touch with an all-wheel-drive
set-up.
It works well, I didn’t tackle any
off-road tracks, but I did drive
it in trail mode on a winding
shingle road near Coalgate to get
a feel of the system maintaining
grip on a loose surface. There was
never a point where I could feel
it working any differently to any
• Price – Toyota Highlander
hybrid Limited, $66,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4950mm; width, 1930mm;
height, 1730mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2487cc, 142kW (+42kW),
242Nm, continuously
variable automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
9.5sec
• Fuel usage – 5.6l/100km
traditional SUV of this type with
just petrol power and standard
four-wheel-drive modes.
On the seal there is a feel that
power is just transferring out the
front, but that is something you
really have feel for and under
normal driving conditions I’d say
it’s very difficult to detect.
The Highlander handles little
differently to that of its big V6
stablemate, it leans a little in a
corner due to its height (1.7m),
but movement over the suspension
is stable and controlled. The
spring and damper rates are a
good compromise between what
is needed for cross-country travel
and maintaining composure
when a tight corner is presented.
As much as the Highlander
hybrid clings to its grass roots
design, it excels in an area where
you wouldn’t think imaginable
from a big SUV – that is fuel
economy. The standard V6 is
now rated with an 8.8-litre per
100km combined cycle figure,
that is about what you expect
from a 3.5-litre petrol engine.
The hybrid, on the other hand,
is rated by Toyota at 5.6l/100km.
That’s easily achievable, when
I took the test car back to the
dealership after 250km, the dash
panel readout was registering a
7l/100km figure.
That was a good result and one
that came easily, I didn’t drive the
evaluation car any differently to
that of its stablemate, I ushered
in acceleration vividly when
needed and drove to my normal
parameters which generally aren’t
that fuel thrifty. On that subject,
the hybrid doesn’t lose out much
in acceleration, it will scamper
to 100km/h in 9sec, about1sec
slower than the V6.
The talk around hybrids at the
moment is the Government’s
Clear Car Programme discount
on plug-in vehicles. Of course,
the Highlander hybrid is not
a plug-in so it doesn’t qualify,
which to my way of thinking is a
little nonsensical, if the Government
is serious about getting new
car buyers thinking about fuel
efficiency then all hybrids should
be in the mix for a discount.
Nevertheless, the Highlander
hybrid is a giant step in Toyota’s
hybrid programme, it will most
certainly make a big impression
in the Kiwi market.
Smarter homes
Infiltrating every arena of our lives, technology aims to make our lives better.
Greater efficiency, economy, comfort, and safety are cornerstones of the
technological advancements that are constantly being imagined and developed to
make our homes a haven from, and connected to, the outside world.
Biometric fingerprint security systems, key
cards, and voice-activated lighting were once
only seen on the seemingly fantastical movies
of 20 years ago. Today, however, they have all
come to fruition on the home front, the realm
of possibilities seems limited only by one's
imagination.
Smarter building materials, smarter
architectural design, smarter appliances,
and smarter software systems that offer fully
integrated multi-sensory platforms are being
envisioned and created faster than we can get
our heads around how to operate them.
So, what is your home missing that
could deliver optimal comfort beyond your
wildest dreams? For those of us who spend
long periods away from home on business,
remote-access security cameras are becoming
a popular commodity.
Cameras placed in and around your home
can be controlled and viewed via a remotely
connected device so no matter where you are
in the world you can have peace of mind that
when you return everything will be just as
you left it.
When receiving visitors, automated
lighting can be activated above the door
when the buzzer is pressed and crystal-clear
video monitors now give you the ability to
zoom in with touch-screen controls and
developments in sound technology are able
to negate background noise for optimal audio
communication.
Smart temperature control is a valuable
piece of technology to give you greater
comfort inside.
Sync the controls to your mobile device
so you can activate the heating or air
conditioning on your way home from the
office so it’s the perfect climate on your
arrival. Smart temperature control systems
give you total control over power and fuel
consumption, heating and cooling your home
efficiently and economically.
Automated lighting is another smart
feature that is becoming more and more
commonplace in households around
the world. LED lights enable you to
control colour, brightness, and efficiency,
depending on the mood and task at hand,
while automated controls can even make
adjustments based on changing conditions
like occupancy or daylight availability, saving
money in the long run.
Whatever the future holds, it promises to
change the world as we know it.
