Sparks performance
a night to remember
Money
puts hand
up for local
elections
• By Emily Moorhouse
VIOLINIST ARNA Morton
has grown up with the Sparks
concert – only this time
around things looked a little
different.
Morton traded the view of
the stage for the view of the
audience as she performed
with the Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra at
Saturday night’s Sparks in
North Hagley Park.
Although performing
at Sparks was a first time
experience for Morton,
she said the concert went
really well and had a great
atmosphere.
“I was just so excited to be
back performing together
with the band,” she said.
“Obviously last year we had
a lot of disruptions so it was
nice to have everyone get back
into it.”
Even after playing the
violin since she was five, the
coastal area resident said
it was normal to still get
nervous before a performance,
especially for a large crowd.
“There’s this heightened
sense of adrenaline before
you go on stage. I definitely
still get nervous, which is
important,” she said. “It’s
about channelling the energy
required for a performance.”
FORMER Coastal-Burwood
chairwoman Kim Money has
made a bid to return to local body
politics, with plans to stand for
council as an independent for the
Coastal Ward.
Celeste Donovan
is the current
Coastal Ward
councillor and
said it was always
great for democracy
when you
Kim Money
had a choice.
“It’s
encouraging to hear another
woman is standing and there will
be others putting up a hand closer
to the election date,” Donovan
said.
Money was the board’s
chairwoman in 2016, but didn’t
stand for re-election in 2019 due
to personal circumstances.
Now she says those
circumstances have changed
and the timing is right for her to
throw her hat back in the arena.
“I’m keen to get back again and
represent this community that I
love so much,” she said. “We really
do need that experience from the
coast sitting at the council table
and I would love to do that for my
community.”
Money said it had been
unfortunate she couldn’t stand
again in 2019 as there were a few
unfinished things she needed to
do. • Turn to page 4
Board earmarks traffic as an
issue to be dealt with this year
TRAFFIC, revitalisation and
sustainability plans are all a
topic of focus for the Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board this year.
Chairwoman
Alexandra
Davids said
the board will
be looking into
the Bromley
Alexandra
traffic management
plan
which will look
Davids
at making streets in that community
safer for residents and
the board hopes to see flow on
effects for neighbouring communities.
Davids also said the Inner
City East revitalisation project
will be a focus for the board,
with a “much needed” plan created
for the area. The working
group will soon be calling for
nominations for a leadership
group to put the plan into action.
Davids also said the board
will “continue to advocate for
our communities dealing with
the Bromley odour issues which
is ongoing.”
Davids added that the board
will also be supporting the
Phillipstown Hub to continue
its work in the community.
HAVOC: Firefighters dampening down smouldering parts of the Bromley wastewater
treatment plant after a fire at the facility in November. Subsequent odour issues are
expected to be dealt with by the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board.
The board will also be
working to ensure that over
the next seven to eight
months that the communities
general needs are met with
a natural transition for the
ward areas moving to different
community boards in the next
election.
“We understand this can feel
like an uncertain time with so
many changes but as a board we
will make sure no communities
are forgotten in this transition,”
she said.
In Brief
STORMWATER WORK
Work will be done to construct
new stormwater backflow
prevention structures at Ebbtide
St and Rocking Horse Rd,
Kingfisher Lane, Penguin St,
Plover St and Tern St. The
existing backflow valves are
prone to blockages and difficult
to maintain so are being replaced
with a new design. Work will
begin in February and continue
through to early June. Work will
be intermittent to align with tidal
groundwater levels.
MUSEUM FUNDRAISER
The New Brighton Museum
committee and volunteers have hit
$4000 of their $250,000 target to
purchase and improve the building
on 8 Hardy St. The museum
committee and volunteers are
hoping to raise funds to buy the
building that is currently being
rented with a lease with right of
renewal until May 2025. The group
has set up a Givealittle page for
people to donate.
ACADEMY MOVES
The Children’s Imagination
Academy has a new headquarters
move as the next step in their
evolution to welcome more
Christchurch families to the
programme with the “brilliant
community” of Richmond.
Money’s council bid
• From page 1
“Some things have stalled,
especially the Southshore and
South Brighton estuary edge,”
Money said.
“We got a strong resolution
passed in August 2019 and then
that flipped back and another
resolution was put in place which
wasn’t exactly what the community
wanted.”
She said living in the area for
40 years has made her more
aware of the issues and allowed
her to build community connections,
a valuable tool she could
bring to the table.
“It’s been a real privilege to
serve this community because
the people are just so amazing,”
she said.
“We’ve got a great community
over here, there’s so much creativity
and enthusiasm and they’ve
had it rough and they really need
to see some breakthroughs.”
Meanwhile
Donovan said
her priority for
2022 will be to
continue what
she started
after her
election last
Celeste
Donovan
October, and
to “bridge the
gap between
the people and
the power.”
She said the issues she was
focusing on were supporting New
Brighton’s retail revitalisation,
ensuring genuine engagement
around future Coastal Hazards
Adaptation planning, pushing
for the completion of Estuary
Edge repairs, and more funding
to support community-led
initiatives, such as the Pukeko
Centre in Parklands.
Donovan said she was also
focusing on ensuring basic
infrastructure issues were
addressed and that roads,
footpaths and parks and public
spaces were well maintained.
After taking a step back from
the community board, Money
said she had been spending time
on her business.
She started up Hathair, a business
offering detachable hairpieces
with hats, an idea inspired
by going through breast cancer
and losing her hair in 2004.
“That’s been keeping me busy
in the last few years,” she said.
“Now the timing is right to put
my hand up again so I’m excited
about that.”
Money said she has missed
being part of the community
board.
“My whole philosophy in life is
just helping people. I’m not into
politics, I’m into helping people
and making a difference and
that’s what drives me,” she said.
While Money is “really keen”
to get around the table, she said
it’s up to the community to
decide.
“I’ll do my best and that’s all I
can do.”
‘We hope we can do
it again next year’
• From page 1
Morton said it was a bit windy
on stage during Saturday night’s
performance so the musicians
used pegs to hold their music
sheets onto the stands.
“That’s something that you
kind of can’t really do a lot
about,” she said. “You have to pin
down your music as best you can
and go with it.”
Morton’s favourite part of the
concert was playing the Jupiter
and Star Wars pieces while the
fireworks went off.
“The audience was very excited,”
she said. “I was looking
out at everyone holding their
phones up recording it and having
a good time.”
After more than six years
in Melbourne, where she
completed her PhD in music
performance, Morton and her
husband returned to her Coastal
hometown early last year seeking
refuge from the uncertainties of
Covid-19.
She has been playing the violin
for 26 years now and working
with the CSO on a casual basis,
auditioning for principal second
violinist in March and winning
the role in August.
“I love watching the faces of
people in the audience when
I’m not playing,” she said. “It
STAGE PRESENCE: The Sparks concert went ahead just
before the country moved to the red traffic light setting.
was really cool to see people’s
real genuine enjoyment of live
music.”
While Morton was grateful to
be able to get at least one concert
in before the country moved to
the red traffic light setting, she
said it was still unfortunate she
couldn’t have performed more.
“Red level is basically normal
life with restrictions for most
people but for the arts it affects
us, we’re always affected at any
level change really,” she said. “I
think we all knew that this could
be our last big crowd concert we
do for a wee while.”
The violinist had a festival
next week as well as concerts in
February and March, but is now
waiting to hear what happens
with these events.
Morton said she’s always aspired
and worked towards being
able to perform at large concerts
on a professional scale.
“I think I always knew that
I would get to this stage in my
career,” she said.
“It’s always what I wanted to
do.”
After the concert Morton
picked up her dog, who was
being looked after while she
performed, and had celebratory
cuddles.
While the red traffic light
setting may put a halt on future
performances, Morton thinks the
band will still be relishing in the
experience of the Spark conc ert.
“We hope we can do it again
next year,” she said.
“We’ll ride out this wave
and hope we can present to
large-scale audiences again.”
Volunteers establish
fungi farm, play site
Volunteers from Richmond Community Garden and Conservation
Volunteers New Zealand teamed up to establish a fungi farm in
Richmond, opposite the Avebury House, last week.
The volunteers planted the fungi farm with native plants to extend an
existing berm with fruit trees that will be espaliered in the garden beds
to provide cover, encouraging the growth of mushrooms and
other fungi.
The project was in collaboration with various organisations and local
artists to create a nature play site with education specifically around
fungi.
