Vaccine passes needed at NC councils<br />

<strong>North</strong><strong>Canterbury</strong> Councilsrequire<br />

vaccinepasses at many of their<br />

premisesand facilitiesfollowingthe<br />

changetoRed under the Covid­19<br />

trafficlight system.<br />

They say while it’smainly be<br />

business as usual, Redprotocols will<br />

require people to present their vaccine<br />

certificates, wear masks, and socially<br />

distance.<br />

Mr Dooceysays thankfully the<br />

<strong>Canterbury</strong> District HealthBoard has<br />

worked hard,after aslow start, to<br />

increase vaccination rates acrossthe<br />

region.<br />

‘‘I’dliketothankour hardworking<br />

vaccinators and encourageeveryone<br />

whocan to getthe booster. Duetothe<br />

government’s lackofplanningfor<br />

much of 2021, New Zealand hadthe<br />

slowestvaccinerolloutinthe<br />

developed world. NowOmicron is<br />

here,and we are thefourth slowest in<br />

thedevelopedworldfor boosters.’’<br />

Business owners, whohad contacted<br />

him, wereworriedaboutthe financial<br />

impacts of the latestoutbreak, he says.<br />

‘‘Whether it’sour local<br />

accommodation and hospitality sector<br />

concerned in thedrop off of customers,<br />

or our local building sectorwho are<br />

concerned aboutsupplychains,I’m<br />

working hardtoensure theyreceive<br />

thesupport theyneedtokeep people<br />

Age is no barrier to Dynamic Vanessa in the grading stakes<br />

A<strong>Canterbury</strong> cow has earned an excellent<br />

grading for the sixth time at agrand old<br />

age.<br />

The 20­year­oldHolstein­Friesian,<br />

Belbrook DynamicVanessa, is believed to<br />

be the only cow to have achieved asixth<br />

EX classification in the country.<br />

OwnedbyJohn and Robbie Wakelin of<br />

Belbrook Holsteins, in Rangiora,Vanessa<br />

was the only Holstein­Friesian to get an<br />

EX5 in 2019.<br />

Robbie Wakelinsaid her longevityand<br />

consistent calving had contributed more<br />

thananythingelse.<br />

‘‘She’s onlystartedtolook older<br />

recently. She’s agood old cow.She runs<br />

through the herd, she’scarefree, and at 19<br />

she’s still going strong.’’<br />

Eachyear,HolsteinFriesian New<br />

Zealand members submittheirregistered<br />

in­milk heifers and cowsfor classification.<br />

The system aims to improve the breed’s<br />

overall standard by recognising each cow’s<br />

strengthsand weaknesses.<br />

All cowsclassified are alsoscoredfor<br />

non­productiontraits.<br />

To achieve an excellentgrading, acow<br />

must have calved at least threetimes.<br />

Born in 2001, Vanessa had come from a<br />

long line of <strong>Canterbury</strong>­centred genetics,<br />

Mr Wakelin said.<br />

‘‘Her sire,Bellview WM Dynamic, was<br />

bred by Johnand I.<br />

‘‘He was an outstanding bull, producing<br />

17 daughters who classified excellent.’’<br />

Vanessa’s dam was Belbrook LP Valda.<br />

The cow got herfirst excellent mark in<br />

2009,with her milkproduction peaking at<br />

513kgofmilk solids in 2013. She had<br />

produced13calvesduring 15 lactations in<br />

her lifetime, and two of her daughters<br />

have classifiedexcellent twice.<br />

Holstein Friesian New Zealand<br />

president DougCourtman saidthe<br />

achievement was evidence of the longevity<br />

of the breed, and the breeding skills of<br />

families such as the Wakelins. Mr Wakelin<br />

said they had never shied awayfrom<br />

breedingwith older cows,and longevity<br />

was atrait his father bred for specifically.<br />
