‘‘I’dliketothankour hardworking
Age is no barrier to Dynamic Vanessa in the grading stakes
By TIM CRONSHAW
ACanterbury cow has earned an excellent
grading for the sixth time at agrand old
age.
The 20yearoldHolsteinFriesian,
Belbrook DynamicVanessa, is believed to
be the only cow to have achieved asixth
EX classification in the country.
OwnedbyJohn and Robbie Wakelin of
Belbrook Holsteins, in Rangiora,Vanessa
was the only HolsteinFriesian to get an
EX5 in 2019.
Robbie Wakelinsaid her longevityand
consistent calving had contributed more
thananythingelse.
‘‘She’s onlystartedtolook older
recently. She’s agood old cow.She runs
through the herd, she’scarefree, and at 19
she’s still going strong.’’
Eachyear,HolsteinFriesian New
Zealand members submittheirregistered
inmilk heifers and cowsfor classification.
The system aims to improve the breed’s
overall standard by recognising each cow’s
strengthsand weaknesses.
All cowsclassified are alsoscoredfor
nonproductiontraits.
To achieve an excellentgrading, acow
must have calved at least threetimes.
Born in 2001, Vanessa had come from a
long line of Canterburycentred genetics,
Mr Wakelin said.
‘‘Her sire,Bellview WM Dynamic, was
bred by Johnand I.
‘‘He was an outstanding bull, producing
17 daughters who classified excellent.’’
Vanessa’s dam was Belbrook LP Valda.
The cow got herfirst excellent mark in
2009,with her milkproduction peaking at
513kgofmilk solids in 2013. She had
produced13calvesduring 15 lactations in
her lifetime, and two of her daughters
have classifiedexcellent twice.
Holstein Friesian New Zealand
president DougCourtman saidthe
achievement was evidence of the longevity
of the breed, and the breeding skills of
families such as the Wakelins. Mr Wakelin
said they had never shied awayfrom
breedingwith older cows,and longevity
was atrait his father bred for specifically.
