The United States Government mints
coins and medals in 6 locations
around the country and is the only
sanctioned institution to mint official
government coins. The original U.S.
Mint building in Washington D.C. was
built in late 1800.s but is not used as a
mint today. Commemorative coins
can be obtained through the U.S. Mint
website. Some coins may be available
through the White House Gift Shop,(not
associated with the U.S. Government},
The first commemorative coin that was
available to be purchased by the public
was the Peace Coin following WWI.
There have been 156 commemorative
coins issued since 1886.

request for a commemorative coin is
passed as congressional legislation. Next
the Mint creates design requirements,
artists are then invited to submit designs.
The Secretary of the Treasury selects
the design to be used. Committees
then recommend the design and the
Mint and other stakeholders review the
design. Mint artists then sculpt the coin.
The Mint creates a test die and from the
test/ Lastly, the mint strikes a coin.
For numismatics who collect coins you
may or may not realize the procedure
that collectible coins are subjected to
before becoming collectible. Coins that
are minted by the United States Mint are
selected by a competitive process. The

designs for new coins and medals. His
studio is a cubicle with a desk and
drafting table located in the same
building where coins are produced by
the billions each year. He has the title of
an engraver but he does not engrave
on metal. Instead, he works with an
oil-based clay which allows changing
details over hours of time without drying
out. He along with other of these
numismatic artists work with 8 inch round
pieces of plastic with the clay inside.
His art tools include dental instruments
and other tools to form the design of the
coin.
During the Trump administration there
were more elaborate and shiner,
flashier and larger coins than any
previous administration. He had his
MAGA campaign slogan put on a
presidential challenge coin used as
a token for service members given to
commemorate special achievements.
This MAGA coin replaced the traditional
presidential seal and the national motto,
E Pluribus Unum. Trump requested
to not use copper or silver for the
coins instead use gold his preferred
color. As an example of some coins
requested by the Trump administration
the coin honoring Trump’s task against
the Coronavirus, this request came
in the middle of the increase in the
number of virus victims and increasing
deaths. This coin became a topic of
humoroous exageration by several
artists. The artist Valery Estabrook
designed a Coronavirus Task Force
coin, using Trump’s comment “ I don’t
take responsibility at all” regarding his
comments on the spread of the virus.

edition $10,000. dollar coin providing
an accompanying statement from the
Kremlin, “.....immortalizing in metal the
bright events of history and modernity,

these coins, 25 silver, 5 gold, and 15

has any association whatsoever with
the genuine United States Mint, and it
is a generally accepted opinion. that
the coins they sell are and will remain
virtually worthless as an investment
collectible” This fits with the paradigm
