ABOUT US
OUR MISSION
is simply to love and encourage
families. We do this primarily by
providing free weekend retreats and
hosting community outreach events
for families who have children with
physical or developmental disabilities.
OUR VISION
is to create more compassionate
communities through families serving
families with the love of Christ, and
led by the Holy Spirit, to further the
Kingdom of God.
OUR VALUES
At Barren Heights, we value:
honoring and glorifying God
with our service
keeping our actions above
reproach
doing all things in love
being wise stewards of God's
provisions
striving for excellence
bathing our mission in prayer
keeping God's Word as our
foundation

COMMUNITY CENTER
Our Community Center plays a vital role in creating more
compassionate communities as it provides a safe gathering
place for families who have children with disabilities. All of
our events are a combination of support, respite, and
inclusion. We host family, women’s, men’s, marriage,
and sibling events approximately twice a month
around the Louisville area. All of our events are
free, volunteer-driven, and focus on families
serving families.
RETREATS
Having a child with disabilities can be very
isolating and often brings unique relational,
financial, and emotional strains. We provide
an opportunity for these families to relax and
refresh at a facility with their needs in mind.
Family Retreats run every weekend from June
through October. We are unique because we
serve the entire family, all of our services are
free, and we welcome all disabilities.

AMAZING WEEKEND!
I loved feeling that my kids were safe
and having fun in whatever space and
activity they were enjoying. With three
kids, I sometimes feel stretched too thin
and like there's not enough "ME" to go
around. We had so much support! And
the kids were happy to have other adults
and "big kids" to play with them, pull
them around in the wagon, carry their
food to the table, and so much more.

STRATEGIC
Focus Areas
Our 2021 focal point was to make
organizational decisions with the needs
and safety of our families as the top
priority! By hosting both virtual and inperson
events, our hope was to provide a
$500,000
sense of community no matter their
situation. After a year off from hosting $400,000
our family retreats, we were more
determined than ever to resume, even if$300,000
retreats looked slightly different than
they ordinarily would. With more grants
$200,000
and support from family foundations, we
were able to expand and improve our
$100,000
splash pad area and provide more
outside space for our special families to
play and gather together in community. $0

From the very moment we arrived,
we felt welcomed! The volunteers
took our bags to the cabin, the kids
came to meet our children, and we
got settled in quickly. The entire
weekend, our hosts constantly
took our kids to play, made sure
we had time alone, took care of
food/snacks/cleaning, and made
sure we had everything we needed.

in 2021
Thank you to each of our 437 donors who
invested in our mission and created more
compassionate communities in 2021.
Because of your generosity, we hosted 16
weekend Getaways and 22 community
center events, impacting 998 individuals.
Overall, 365 families who have children
with disabilities were served in 2021.
Additionally, 234 volunteers joined in our
mission to make each guest feel loved,
accepted, welcomed, and safe.
Barren Heights has chosen not to
measure our impact by just systems
and numbers, but by the individual life
transformation and growth we see in
each of our guests. We have realized a
great degree of success by meeting
people right where they are. Lives are
being changed one child, one family,
one story at a time.

SPLASH PAD
We enjoyed our first
season of fun with our
newly expanded splash
pad and rubber pavement.
PLAYGROUND
We increased the inclusivity
of our playground through
the addition of shaded
picnic tables.
STAFF
We welcomed two
additional staff to the
Barren Heights team.

The volunteers took the time to listen to
every concern we had in keeping our
child safe. They developed plans before
we even got there to make sure she was
protected! Beyond that, they went above
and beyond to help her feel comfortable
so we could take some time to ourselves.
Even in short bursts, she was comfortable
with us leaving her with people she’d met
less than 24 hours prior, and that was a
huge step for all of us! All of it because of
the amazing volunteers!

campaign
2022 will be a year of growth. After a year of
modified retreats, we will strive to open our
retreat center at full capacity. We will also:
implement new strategies for
volunteer recruitment and training
through expanding our geographical
outreach and creating new partnerships.
intentionally support and provide
respite for caregivers in our community.
renew our focus on providing programs
and services for special needs families.
launch a capital campaign to build a
new multipurpose building at the retreat
center with a spacious, indoor play
space, a sensory room, and new
volunteer quarters.
Beyond 2022, we envision breaking ground
on the multipurpose building. In building
this new space and increasing our volunteer
families, we hope to provide more offseason
programming at the retreat center.
Additionally, we see the community center
expanding its programs in both the number
of events hosted and growing outside the
Louisville area through church, business,
and organizational partnerships.
