Witness to Change Reading and Discussion Series

Since civilization began, people have attempted

to control water - keeping it close, but in its place.

But what happens when the relationship with water

changes? How do we react when the sea rises,

when land is lost, and when flooding affects our

homes?

Witness to Change: Community Conversations on

Coastal Impacts, an adult reading and discussion

series, offers participants the opportunity to learn

more about issues arising from the complex and

changing human relationship with water.

Our scholars for the series are Dr. Gary LaFleur, the

Director of the Center for Bayou Studies at Nicholls

State University, and Ted Jackson, a Pulitzer Prizewinning

photojournalist and author.

The scholars will facilitate four discussion programs,

one for each book in the series, from February

to May at the East Regional Library in Destrehan.

Participants will be able to keep all of the books.

The series incorporates history, memoir,

and fiction and will engage participants in

conversations on the beauty of and challenges

faced by coastal communities.

Sessions will spark dialogue around issues and

themes found in the books including what

makes a place a home, experiences of flooding,

hurricanes, family roots, and more.

The St. Charles Parish Library is honored have

been selected as one of only six public library

sites in the state to host this reading and

discussion program.

To register, visit www.myscpl.org or contact Maria

Bilello at maria.bilello@myscpl.org.

Unheard Voices of Louisiana

the East Regional Library in Destrehan on Wednesday, February 16 at

Louisiana’s cultural and ethnic diversity by presenting our history from

the perspectives of women, free people of color, enslaved Africans,

Native Americans, Acadians, Germans, and other cultural contributors.

Created and presented by Dianne “Gumbo Marie” Honore, a local

history buff, event producer, and award-winning preservationist, this

program portrays accurate historical information and encourages

communication in a professional, ethical, and equitable manner.

This presentation is for all ages.
