Call to reduce speed limit
DANIEL.TOBIN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
The Methven Community Board
have passed amotion to urgeWaka
KotahiNZTransport Agency (NZTA)
to reduce the speed limit on State
Highway 77 west of the town.
Ashburton deputy mayor and
Methven resident Liz McMillan said,
at Monday’smeeting, the road was
becoming dangerouswith the newly
open Opuke Thermal Pools and a
walkingtrack near the road.
‘‘We’ve been talkingtoNZTA
about the speed limit out of town
towardthe hot pools. It goes straight
to 100kmh and now withthe hot
pools people miss the turnofftothe
pools and need to do Uturns, it’s
gettingquite dangerous,’’ she said.
Frustrated by the red tape
involved in dealingwith NZTA Cr
McMillan decided to launch a
petition.
‘‘I’m frustrated that there didn't
seem to be any other way of getting
any action,’’ she said.
The petitionhas had over 430
signatures so far with one comment
on the petition saying‘‘Methvenhas
grown and many people use the
walkway and the 100kmh speed is a
dangernow and not consistent with
the developinggrowth of the town.’’
Cr McMillan said she walked up
there quite often and notices what’s
happening with the traffic,‘‘and it’s
not pleasant to walk alongthere with
the cars zipping alongat100kmh.’’
He was told by NZTAitwasn't
as it wasn't in the budget or had even
been brought up.
New classroom, new year, new rules
Months of building workhas
come to fruition and is
benefitting St Joseph’s School
pupils this week in their return
The pupils, fromnew
their brandnew classroom
facemasks and social
system.
St Joseph’s School principal
Cath Blacklow said the new
classroom spaces,
administration block layout
Mrs Blacklow said the school
Pupilswere having lunch in
smaller class groups and Year 4
Year 4pupils at St Joseph's Schoolpleasedtobe startingthe new year in anew classroomspace.
andabove, including teachers
andstaff, were wearing masks
indoors.
Mask wearing raised some
challenges, Mrs Blacklow said.
The lack of facial connection
andability to read someone’s
face affected interpersonal
skills between pupils and
teachers.
It also raised challenges in
the composite Year3and4class
where it was optional forYear3
pupils to wearmasks,shesaid.
There were also
considerations forimmunecompromisedchildren.
There isaterrific warmth and tenderness to
Kenneth Branagh’s feelgood memoir. It is
about his experiences growing up in Belfast
(Northern Island) as the “Troubles”erupted in
the late 1960s.
Thestory is told through 9yearold Buddy who
hops, skips andjumps through each day, trying
to work out what is happening. Hisfamilyare
Protestants, their Catholic neighbours are
beingdrivenout of their homes.
When Buddy needs to talk he sits in his
Community behind new security camera
DANIEL.TOBIN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
The tight knit Hakatere Huts community
have banded together to install a
security camera in their neighbourhood.
Aneighbourhood support group was
formed last year and one of the first
concerns they wanted to address was
safety.
Neighbourhood Support Ashburton
District coordinator Sue Abel said the
community is fairly isolated and most
people are retired.
‘‘The community asked for asecurity
camera as there had been afew
incidences in the area and they felt it
would provide alittle bit more safety.
‘‘We worked with anumber of people
and Masterguard came on board and
gave some good advice on the best
security camera,’’ she said.
The neighbourhood support group did
some fundraising to buy the camera and
members of the community dug the
trench and erected it, Masterguard will
continue to maintain it free of charge.
The camera captures the cars coming
in and records licence plate numbers,
the feed can be accessed via a
smartphone app.
‘‘If there is acar in the area behaving
suspiciously at say 2am then we can
check 2am on the app and see the
number plate,’’ Sue said.
andsomething her owndaughter, now in
her 20s, hasalso learned.
Rebeccatrulypicked up alove of the
craft from her grandma, the lateValmai
Ludemann. Shewas also amemberofthe
guild.
As ayoungster Rebecca remembers
her grandma was always working on
something.
When Valmai passed away in 2018,
Rebecca received some of her
embroidery bits. Among them were
threads, fabrics and special hoops used
to hold fabric in place while stitching.
Thedoll house was something
youngsterswhen visiting their great
grandma.
“It was agood way to useupleftover
Rebecca often starts the day with an
hour of embroidery, and alsodoes it at
night.
She has also been known to take pieces
to work to complete during her breaks.
“I’ve always hadaninterest in
embroidery. It’s anice relaxing hobby,
and it’s quite nice to learn newskills,”
Rebecca said.
As amemberofthe guild she also
regularly meets withothers whoshare
the same interests. The guildhave a
Facebookpage forthose interested in
coming along to one of their meetings.
They meet four times amonth.
Rebecca has made cushions, wall
hangings, various Christmas pieces and
gifts for others.
Some pieces are hangable and notall
are framed behind glass.
Rebecca has made pieces fixed to a
canvas backingand everyday use items
such as the cushion covers.
While some projects go faster than
others, and some seemtojust flow, her
favourite stitch is thebargello which is a
simple, traditional stitch;repetitive and
rhythmic.
forthe cancellationofthe
Thedecisiontocancel
weekbythe production team.
Thehighlyanticipated show
was set to be ajoint
production involving the
Ashburton Trust Event Centre
(ATEC) and Variety Theatre
Ashburton.
It was originally to have
beenperformed in late August
and September last year, but
wasrescheduledtoMarchthis
year because of the covid
situation.
ATEC manager and Jesus
Christ Superstar director
RogerFarr said the decision
to cancelthe showaltogether
had been ‘‘heartbreaking’’.
It was lining up to be an
incredible production anda
lot of time and effort had been
put in by so many people.
Mr Farr said the cast and
crew involvednumbered110
peopleand putting their
health andsafety on the line
was not worth the risk of
continuing.
‘‘Wehave aresponsibility
to Jesus Christ Superstar were secured last May.
worse, andthe production
team feels this is the only
decision we could make.’’
Mr Farr said he, musical
director Jo Castelow and
chorographer Julia Bell
couldn’t thank the castand
crewenough for its incredible
commitmenttodate.
‘‘Sometimes, the show just
can’t go on.’’
Mr Farr said he was grateful
to the sponsors that had stuck
withtheproduction andthe
last 10 months.
An application to recoup
costs incurred by the Jesus
Government.
Mr Farr saidhewas hopeful
that much of what had been
spent would be recovered.
Theproduction budget was
$120,000, butcostsincurred to
date were less thanthat, he
said.
Ticket refunds for the show
willalsobeavailable and
ATEC is working that process.
Ashburton’s Stars in Your Eyes
Event spokesperson and
County Lions member Marie
disappointing to have to cancel
the event,but it wasthe right
decision based on thecurrent
climate.
Limited numbers of just 100
Ashburton Courier, February 3, 2022
Minimising the
risk of Omicron
Keeping people safehas
alwaysdriven our covid
response –and now that we’re
facingOmicron,our focusisno
different. That’s why, ever
since thisnew variant emerged
overseas, we’vebeen
preparing for its arrival by
getting ahead start on
boosters,finetuning our
testing,tracing,and isolation
strategy,and ensuring our
traffic light settingsare fit for
purpose.
It’s beengreat to see
everyone in Ashburton looking
out for each other by masking
up, scanning in, keeping asafe
distance, and usingvaccine
passes. At Red, these
behaviours becomeeven more
important to slow the spread,
keep each other safe, and
reducepressure on our health
system.
We knowthat here in Mid
Canterbury, we’re likely to see
many more cases than we have
previously, but thereare ways
we can all helptoprotect each
other.You’ve probablyheard
that mask requirements have
been strengthened, because we
know fromthe experience of
countries overseas that
wearing amask,when done
right,has asignificant role to
play in managing Omicron.
The strongerrequirements
include wearing an actual
mask, not wrapping abandana,
scarf,ortshirt around your
face. This is because evidence
shows that masksthat fit
properly aroundthe nose and
mouth help to reduce the
spreadofcovid. The widely
available blue medicalmasks
are agreat choice.
We’ll also needtomask up in
more places, including
restaurantsand cafes, when
we’re not eating or drinking. As
asimplerule of thumb, aim to
wear amask whenever you
leave home and mightnot be
able to keep asafe distance.
By using masks effectively,
we can minimise the risk of
Omicron and safely continue to
9
roll out boosterdoses. That’s
essential, because the data
showsthat boosters can
provide better protection
against Omicron,making you
less likelytoget seriouslyill or
end up in hospital.
If you’reover 18 and it’s been
four months since your second
dose,you’re now due for your
booster. Iencourage you to get
it as soon as you’re able to. You
can bookittoday, or find your
nearest walkin or drivethrough
clinic, by visiting
BookMyVaccine.nz or by
calling 0800 28 29 26.
More thanone million Kiwis
are alreadyboosted, and most
of us will be eligible by late
February. Thanks to everyone
in Mid Canterbury who’s
already stepped up to get that
extralayer of protection.
Childrenaged 5to11are also
now eligible to get vaccinated.
This is agreat way to keep
tamariki as safeaspossible
and minimise their likelihood
of passingcovid on to
vulnerablewhānau. If you’re a
parent or caregiver, I
encourageyou to seek out
informationtohelp you make
this decision.
Over the pasttwo years, our
communityhas pulled together
to respondtoCovid 19. Our
approach has worked: New
Zealand has some of the lowest
ratesofcasesand deaths in the
OECD,aswell as astrongerthanexpected
economy. It’s
been ahuge team effort –and,
together, we can all help to
reduce the risk of Omicron.
The best way we can each play
our part now is by getting
boosted.
Airport users
asked for ideas
Ashburton Airport users are
being asked for their feedback
and ideas on how they want the
airfield site to look in the
future.
Adraft development plan is
being put together by
Ashburton District Council,
which owns the airport and
leases sites for hangars and
airport activities.
Airport users and lessees are
being asked to complete an
online survey asking them for
feedback on hangar
developments, other ideas and
any potential development
issues.
The feedback will help
council draft the Ashburton
Airport Development Plan,
which will go out for wider
community consultation.
The survey asks if users
would support more more
recreational hangars near the
Ashburton Aviation Museum,
more hangars on the far
northeast boundary of the
Airport and more commercial
hangars along the south
boundary of the airport next to
Seafield Road).
It also asks if users would
support anew area for hangar
homes along the western
boundary of the airport next to
Morris Road. Hangar homes
allow people to live in the
hangar where they store their
aircraft.
The survey closes on
February 6and adraft
development plan will go out
for public consultation.
Fire safety tips for summer
If you’re spending time at homethis
summer, now’s agreat time to think
about fire safetyand in particular
what you can do to reduce around
your property to reducethe risk from
vegetationfires.
Rural homeownersand those
livingonthe outskirts of town or
surrounded by bush and treesare at
greater risk of fireand must take
precautions to protect their lives,
homes and property.
The 2017 Port Hills fires and last
year’sdamaging firesatLake Pukaki
and recent Lake Ōhau showed how
homes located near trees, scrub or
dry grasscan be at risk of wildfire.
Here are three simple and
effective tips to reduce your risk and
improve your family’s safety:
1. Make an escape planfor you and
your family to get out of the house
and off the property. Test it regularly
2. Ensure good access for
emergency services. Makesure your
driveway clearance is at least four
metres wide and four meters high.
Ensure there is adequate turning
space for firetrucksand easyaccess
to water.
3. Createasafetyzone aroundyour
homethis is also known as
‘defensible space’. It’ is the area
around yourhome where vegetation
has been modified, reduced or
clearedtocreate abarrierand slow
the spread of fire towardsyour home.
Asafety zone alsoallowsspace for
firefighters to tackle the fire safely.
By creating asafety zone, you will
reduce fuels around your home and
it’salso agood idea to use fireresistantplants
for landscaping.
Create asafety zone:
Zone one extendsto10metres on
all sidesofyour house:
convert to lawn and plant fireresistant
plants and trees
remove flammable material and
debris
Zone two is from 10 to 30 metres of
your home:
remove scruband thin excess
trees
evenly spaceremaining trees so
they aren’t touching
prune large trees and remove all
branches within two metres of the
ground
remove dead or dying trees
remove overhanging branches
near power lines.
Laminate, avery popular alternative
Laminate is quickly becoming averypopular
hardflooring alternativeand with increasingly
superior products available it is easy to see why.
Theadvantages of laminate flooringinclude its
durability, ease to clean and colour stabilityin
high sun areas.
Theappearanceoflaminate flooringhas become
so realistic thatitisoften mistaken forreal wood.
It is availableinalarge range of colours from the
lightest timbers to the darkest stains and many
variations in between and come in arange of sizes
and plank widths. Laminate is also becoming a
popular choiceinkitchens as it is softerunder foot
than the likes of ceramic tiles, yet it is still hardwearing. Also
some of the new ranges arenow
fully warrantedfor use in wetareas.
Laminate planks come pre-finished which means
no waiting around forlayers ofpolyurethane to
dryand no smells! Youcan walk on them the very
same daythey arelaid. Afoam underlayprovides
cushioning and sound absorption, then the
tongue and groove joints areclicked together to
form a“floating”floor over the top. It is important
to ensurelaminate is installed properly by qualified
and experienced installers. Qualitylaminate flooringwill not cup or bowwhen properly
installed and maintained. However as with most flooring, thereare varying qualities of laminate
and yougenerally get whatyou payfor!
However, the real advantage of laminate flooringisthatitisone of the easiest floors to care
forand maintain thatyou can find.Itdoesn’t easily stain, is fade resistant, never needs waxing
or polishing and it takes alot of wear. The superior wear surfacewith which most modern
laminate floorsare provided means thatthey resist normal wear and tear with ease.
So next time youare considering laminate flooring, come and see the friendly team at Skip-2-
Wool carpets making acomeback
Wool carpets have been making
acomeback in the flooring
worldrecently. Although most
of the carpet sold nowadays is
solution dyed nylon, thereare
still manypeople who would
rather have awool carpet underfoot.
Thereare manygood
reasons forthis,firstly it is a
natural fibreand renewable
resource. Itisnaturally fire
retardantand naturally soil and
stain resistant. It also helps
manage humidityinthe home
by absorbing moisture. The
main pointtoremember with wool carpets is thatagood wool carpet is still agood wool
carpet. However, this is definitely aproductwhereyou get whatyou payfor.
Textured carpets arewherewools arereallycoming into their ownintoday’smarket. Currently
thereare anumber of beautiful softtextured and loop piles on the market. These
go from the finer, moretraditional sisal looking carpets to the luxurious chunkyloops that
feel gorgeous underfoot. These areavailable in anumber of differentlooks and colours
nowfromcreams through to darkbrownsand greysaswell as in twotone variations.
Formanypeople tracking in carpet is something thatreally puts them off acut pile nylon
carpet. (Trackingiswhen the pile flattens in ahigh traffic area.) Loop pile wool carpets
arenot as prone to this and is just another reason people choose wool.
One finalthing to remember with wool carpet vs nylon is thatthe weights arenot necessarily
comparable. Whereas astandardweight nylon carpet is around 32-34oz, an equivalentwool
carpet would be around 40oz. (Carpet is still measured in termsofounces per
squareyard!)
So if youwould like to know moreabout wool carpets and the benefits they can offer you
and your family, come and see the friendly and experienced team at Skip-2-ItFlooring
Kids maze venture set to challenge
DANIEL.TOBIN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
If you feel lost and confused on
adaily basis perhaps the Maize
Maze just north of Ashburton
will be right up your alley.
The maze is run by 15yearold
Scarlett Hanrahan with
help from her younger brothers
Fergus and Freddie, neighbour
NellMarié and pooch Cola.
The maze was originally
opened around eight years ago
as afundraiser for Scarlett’s
former primary school,
Ashburton Borough School.
Dad, and farm owner, Randal
Hanrahan said it is now away
for Scarlett to learn about
running abusiness.
‘‘Basically she is running it as
abusiness. We set her up with
the stock, she had to pay the
money back for the icecreams
and drinks and she's had to pay
her brothers for any work they
have done in the maze cleaning
it out, and paying herself a
wage. At the end there will be a
profit,’’ he said.
Growing up on the farm the
Hanrahan kids would play
among the maize.
‘‘We used to get lost, we used
to follow our animals through it
and get lost when we were
younger,’’ Scarlett said.
She said her father designs a
new maze on his computer each
year.
‘‘Dad does it on his laptop, a
new one every time, then he
marks it out when the maize is
little, so the paths can be cut
out.’’
The kids then help clear out
all the cut maize in the paths.
There has been no need to
launch any rescue missions yet,
as most people find their way
out in good time.
People who are nervous
about never getting out don't
need to fear.
‘‘Even if you don't come out
the exit, alot (of people) come
out the entry, so you’re always
going to get out,’’ Scarlett said.
The maze will be open on
weekends from now until
Easter.
Council Community Services Group
Manager Steve Fabish said the plaques
were being printed onto aluminium with
an anti-graffiti coating and would be
were being made by Juice Signs and the
Locations and streets or talking points
were decided on by the group, and then
concept panels were developed and
researched, before the final text and
“The idea for each of the plaques was to
pick an interesting narrativefor each street
awareness of it as well as promoting the
historical significanceofour CBD.
drinkingwaterschemes.
The quality of ourdrinking waterhas
traditionally been great,but nowwe
needmoreevidencetoprove it.
So budget talksinthe past week have
included business cases forthings
outside of what we expectedinYear2
of our Long Term Plan.
We thinkthe largest single portion of
your rateswill be spentinthe drinking
waterareameeting newquality
assurance rules that arecoming
down theline from the drinking water
regulator.
Someofthose rateswill go towards
newassets,likeplanned treatment
plant upgrades, butalotmorewill go
intoequipment thatprovidesdata, for
our community schemes to meet the
required standards.
Newfiltration and UV disinfection
equipment is neededatsix water
treatmentplants, with$2million
needed forthe large Ashburton scheme
alone.
Newsampling equipmentisneeded
acrosssome schemes to take,test
and automatically report the result
online to Council staff. If there’sa
problem with nitrates, chlorine levels,
or protozoa,officerswill finditinreal
time, not hours or even days later.
Some watertreatment plants that
deal withwater thatcan be affected
by turbidity, likeMethven’s,also need
newinstrumentation. Allthe new
information gathered from the new
online equipmentwill be fedintoour
telemetrysystem, which tracks what’s
happening on ourdrinking water
schemes.
On topofthoseadditions is our
renewalprogramme, whichhas $1.5m
of waterpipereplacement planned.
Replacing olderpipes beforetheystart
to deteriorate has been part of our
good managementpracticefor years.
These drinking waterthingsare on our
must-do list. Thereare other things on
ournice-to-have listand our can-bedelayedlist.
We aretrying to strikeabalance
betweenrate risesthathelp Council
meet expectedlevels of serviceand
what ratepayers canrealistically be
expected to pay, given allthatisgoing
on in the world at the moment.
Theprice of manythings, from water
pipes to maintenancecontracts,has
been hugely affectedbycovid and the
rate of inflation, which was5.9 per cent
forthe past year.
We havetodecidewhether to budget
more moneyfor theworks and services
we had planned forthe 12 months
beginning 1July 2022, or cut works and
services to fit the budget we originally
allocated.
Whileour draft budget is still awork
in progress,weknowthatwewill be
spending agoodportion of iton
roading and ensuring our roads areup
to standard, sealed or unsealed.
We haveheard themessageloud and
clear that roads areanissue and we
mustdobetter.
Council maintains oneofthe biggest
roading networks in thecountryand
someofthose roads take abeating
from heavyvehicletraffic. The network
wasalso hammered in placesbylast
May’sbig rain event but we arealmost
finished with those emergencyrepairs.
So,thereismuch to do and we must
cut our cloth accordingly.
Willowby
recycling in
the spotlight
Community recycling facilities at
Willowby are under review after
household rubbish was dumped
there twice in the past four weeks.
The facility is near LongbeachSchool and
consistsoftwo large skips, clearlymarked
forrecyclable goods onlyalong withglass
recycling bins.
Twice in January, Council contractor
EnviroWaste has found household rubbish
dumpedintoand alongside the skipbins.
Council’s Infrastructure Services Group
Manager Neil McCann said the skip bins
withrubbishputinthemhadtobetakento
landfill, becausetheywerecontaminated
with non-recyclable material.
“Taking abin such as this tolandfill has
cost ratepayers about $1000. It appears as
if someone has justdumped their rubbish
there, which is really disappointing
considering agood many other people
manage to do it correctly.”
Most Willowby area residents are now
included in Council’skerbside rubbish and
recycling collection, but the community
facility has remained open to make it
easier forrural residentstouse.
“We might have toconsider installing a
security camera or moving the facility
because wedon’t want this sort offlytipping
to becomearegular occurrence.”
Recyclable materials include plastics 1,
2and 5, clean tins and cardboard, and
newspapers.
Lids of any size are not acceptable in
recycling bins and canonly be recycled at
the AshburtonResourceRecovery Park.
All rubbish can bedropped off at the
Rakaia roundaboutssealed
Two roundabouts at Rakaia have
been reconstructed and given
asphalttreatment, designedto cope
with heavy vehicles making highstress
turns.
The tworoundabouts on Elizabeth Street
and the road in between have been
partially reconstructed instages over the
past few months, with about 1000m2 of
asphalt laid.
Ashburton District Council’s roading
contractor HEB has carried out the work,
foraround $100,000.
Council Infrastructure Services Group
ManagerNeil McCann said partsofthe old
road datedback severaldecadesand the
pavementhadfailed,resultingin potholes.
“Aftermany yearsoftaking abeating from
heavy trucks turning, the pavement was
weak and had to be removed, or milled as
it is called in the industry.
“It was replaced with astrong asphalt
surfaceand pavementwhich will be able
to withstand the high turning stresses of
the many heavyvehicles which use these
roundaboutsevery day.”
Mr McCann said the repair should last
until the entireroundaboutneeded to be
reconstructed, planned within the next 10
years.
“Using the mill and asphalt systemmeant
theroundaboutsweren’tclosedforseveral
weeks at atime. The roundabouts were
closed for three nights during the entire
project.
“Asphalt is more expensive than chipseal
but better able to handle the high
volume of heavy trucks that use these
roundabouts.”
Sharplin Falls track ready next summer
MICK.JENSEN
@ashburtoncourier.co.nz
The Mt Somers Walkways
Societyhopes to have anew, rerouted
walking track to
Sharplin Fallsopen to the
public by next summer.
The old track has been out of
boundssince February 2015
because of the danger of rock
fall.
An alternative, safe route on
the otherside of Bowyers
Stream has been on the
drawing board for anumber
years and aworkinggroup has
been progressing it for the last
three.
Mt Somers Walkways Society
chair Charles Ross said the goal
of opening up anew route to the
popular Sharplin Falls was now
within reach and he hoped it
would be completed in the next
12 months.
It had been obvious anumber
of years ago that the
Department of Conservation
(DOC) did not intend reinstating
the old route and the only way to
get the treasured destination
open was for the walkways
society and community to do the
job themselves.
The project had been slow to
get traction at times, but agood
team of people had worked
together and stuck at it, he said.
The process of rerouting the
track to the falls has been
worked through with the DOC
and Ashburton District Council.
The initial environmental
Sharplin Falls seenfrom the old track thatclosed in early 2015.
effects assessment was abig
piece of work and and
completed by environmental
scientist Fred Overmars, Mr
Ross said.
Asecond report was
completed by environmental
adviser Bob Willis from Fulton
Hogan, who submitted and
supported an application to
DOC, and facilitated an
application and consultation
with Ngai Tahu.
Just over amonth ago DOC
granted permission to proceed
with the project, he said.
Requirements for resource
consent and concession fees
Members of the working group setupin 2018 to move the new
track projectforward(from left standing) Barry Austin, Alan Totty
(bothwalkwayssociety), CamBissett (Track &Trail), Charles Ross
(walkways society) and (sitting fromleft) Colin Hunt (ERL), Shane
Reynolds (Fulton Hogan),Jack Allan (walkways society) and Matt
Hunt (ERL).
PHOTO SUPPLIED
were waived and currently a
review of the easement and
concession document was under
way before afinal sign off.
The walkways society was
granted $80,000 for the project
by the MidSouth Canterbury
Community Trust some months
ago.
The funding was agame
changer and allowed
momentum to build, Mr Ross
said.
Recently announced funding
of $75,000 from the Lion
Foundation has also been
welcomed and will be used for
two new 34m bridges that will
cross Bowyers Stream to the
falls.
‘‘Although our other
contractors are extremely busy
they are looking forward to
getting their teeth into a
challenging community
project,’’ Mr Ross said.
Good Bowling everyone, but stay safe!
Mid Canterbury Provincial RWNZ
As we welcomed in the New Year, we also
welcomed more uncertainty regarding the
covid virus and its variants. Tobesure, at
some stage we will probably get some form of
the “nasty”. How we have prepared ourselves
for the ordeal, will reflect on how much we are
affected by it. The last thing we want to
happen, isfor our community to be so plagued
by it, so that the whole town and district are
recovering from it at the same time.
The repercussions of this could be catastrophic,
to say the least.Wemust try and keep
ourselves as safe as possible to minimise this
effect.
On a brighter note, congratulations to
Sandra Curd for receiving the RWNZ the Olive
Craig Trophy Member of Excellence award” at
our December meeting. It was so exciting to
see our local member receive this national
award, which was richly deserved.
Areminder, our next provincial meeting is
on February 11atthe Sinclair Centre, starting
at 9.45am. To keep ourselves safe, masks
must be worn, vaccination passes are required
and social distancing will apply.
Take care, enjoy these warmer days and
Art tutor Kristin Dunne sketching at inspirational Trott’s Garden.
Artists to be inspired by gardens
Another term of community art
classes will begin this month
with twoinspirational sessions
at Trott’s Garden.
Painting en plein air
(outdoors) will helpstudents
create art from their ‘‘spirit'’
rather than through
intellectual knowledge, art
tutor Kristin Dunne says.
‘‘Trott’s is aspecialplaceand
at this timeofthe yearvisitors
cantruly experience the glory
of summer.’’
Mrs Dunne intends using the
gardens to inspire artists,just
as one of her favourite artists,
Frenchimpressionist painter
Claude Monet, wasinspired by
natural settings.
‘‘Monet’s landscape works
capturedwhat true light and
movement looked like,’’ she
said.
Mrs Dunne has been scouting
inspirational locationsaround
Trott’s and is eyeingup awater
lily pond, dovecotes, statues
and other scenic spots.
Two painting sessions will be
held at the gardenson
February 11 and February 18.
Seven follow up classes each
Fridaymorningwill be held in
aroomattheAshburton Public
Libraryand will further
Plantings
for winter
There is agood casefor
mixingvegetables with
flowers to get the best
productionfrom gardens,
especially those that lose the
sun early. This is particularly
true for southfacing
propertiesorgardens
overshadowed by high trees.
By now, planting of winter
greens likebroccoli,
cauliflowers,silverbeet and
celery should be complete.
Celery needs regular and
plentiful watering at this
stage to stop it running to
seed. Addingliquid manure
helps promote lushgrowth
becauseofits high levels of
nitrogen.
In cool areas,turnipsand
fastmaturing varieties of
carrot (usually calledearly
on seedpackets) can still be
sowninrich soilkept wellwatered.
Ladies Finger,
Baby, Parmex andParis
Market are smallgrowing
carrots suitable forlate
crops.
Chives canbesubstituted
for spring onions andmakea
useful border in avegetable
or flower plot. Easytogrow in
most soils, chive clumpscan
bedivided and replanted in
autumnand early spring.
Spaceclumps 25cm apart
and water regularlyto
encourage new,tender
growth.
Once theplants are
established, cutfoliage
regularly to encourage new
growth.
Cabbageseed can be sown
now for spring crops.
Royaltyatheme among last year’s declined babynames
King, Prince and Saint are again on the list of declined
babynames in New Zealand for2021.
While there were no baby Covids in the list of 78 declined
baby names there were plenty of royals as released by
the Registrar-General,Births,Deaths and Marriages.
Eight registered babies sought tohave King as their
name, six Saint, five Prince and four Royalty but were
declined.
There were also three with Messiah, Souljah and two
with Crown, Duke, III, Major Prynce, Rogue, Royal and
Sovereign.
“It’s fine to give your baby acreative name, aslong as
the name isn’t causing anyoffence, and it fitswithin the
guidelines,” says registrar-general Jeff Montgomery.
Theguidelines make surenames areareasonable length,
and don’t unjustifiably resemble an official title or rank.
If aname orcombination of names appears to fail the
criteria, it can be reviewed by the registrar-general and
the family has achance topresent their reasons for the
name, and these may beaccepted, onacase-by-case
basis.
Of the nearly 60,000 babies born inNew Zealand each
year, less than one percent had their name personally
considered by the registrar-general.
Tips forensuring youcan register your baby’sname: -
avoid official titles, using numeric characters or anything
unpronounceable, like a backslash or a punctuation
mark.
• Rethink swear words.
• Limit the name to no morethan 70 characters.
• Register the baby’sbirth using the SmartStartwebsite.
Belowisthe full list of names declined in 2021:
