Impact Report
2021
The last twelve months...
Despite the most challenging of times, Look Good Feel Better has adapted
and evolved its services to ensure we are available for anyone who needs
our support; something that hasn’t changed in the last twenty-seven years
since we launched our very first workshop at The Royal Free Hospital in
Hampstead.
What has changed, is the significant demand for our services and the broad
range of wellbeing workshops we now offer both virtually and face to face,
to support people living with cancer.
Using the gift of time, given to us as a result of lockdowns during the
pandemic, the charity has researched, developed, trialled, and launched new
online services. In doing so, we have extended our reach and deepened our
relationship with our beneficiaries.
The findings from the beneficiary survey conducted at the end of last year
and which are highlighted in this report, clearly demonstrate the enormous
positive physical and emotional impact we have on a beneficiary’s wellbeing
during and after their cancer treatment.

Julia's Story
Julia, an English teacher and mum of two from Cardiff in South Wales, first noticed
a lump in her breast back in 2017 whilst living in Beirut, but was told it was "just a
cyst" and nothing to be concerned about.
It wasn't until August 2021, after Julia returned to the UK, that she noticed the
lump had grown, and received the devastating diagnosis of Breast Cancer.
I heard about the Look Good Feel Better workshops a couple of months after my
diagnosis. I was interested in the Skincare and Makeup workshop, but I wasn't
going to attend as I had an allergic reaction from my chemotherapy medication,
which made my eyes swell and my skin break-out, so I didn't think they would be
able to do anything to help me, but I decided to go along anyway.
It was perfect timing. I was helped by the kind volunteers who showed me how to
disguise my allergic reaction and I could not believe how I looked. I felt that I could
face the world again. It was also so lovely to meet people in the same situation who
were dealing with similar issues to me. We all left the session feeling more
confident and smiling.
Julia is now awaiting surgery and is looking forward to getting back to work and
spending time with her two daughters.
Peter's
Experience
I recently attended a Look Good Feel Better Men’s Grooming virtual workshop
hosted by Lisa. As a group we spent a few minutes introducing ourselves. We
all came from various parts of the country and were at different stages of
either cancer care or treatment and we all had the opportunity to speak about
our personal issues.
We were then given a presentation on men’s skincare and shaving by Mark
Sprotson from the company Shave Doctor. Mark gave an excellent, entertaining
and live display to getting the best shave. He is passionate about this subject and
his support for LGFB and to share this with men to lift their spirits whilst going
through treatments.
He gave me excellent advice on beard grooming, facial skin care and advice on
getting a professional shave from a fully trained barber.
We also had a talk from Jack Bell from Derby County Community Care on the
the subject of exercise for men at various stages of treatment, he was really
helpful and like Mark made available personal contact details for us all to get in
touch for advice.
The Workshop was really helpful and I would recommend it for men to give
them a boost and and to make them feel better.

Gillian Kirton
Volunteer of the year
It was whilst working in Debenhams that I first heard about the Look Good Feel
Better service, and having worked for most of the major cosmetic companies, I
started volunteering my time with the charity at Belfast City Hospital.
Over the past 20 years I’ve also supported the workshops at Newry and Antrim
and with every single workshop I attend, I continue to be overwhelmed by the
94%
transformational effect these sessions have on those living with cancer.
Look Good Feel Better
has been one of my main passions in life and getting to
see our beneficiaries interacting with each other and the empathy that they
show for each other at the sessions is why I have dedicated so much of my life
to supporting this wonderful charity.
Whether seeking guidance on how to address some of the physical
changes to appearance or the need to help reduce feelings of isolation and
anxiety, it is clear that our services provide much needed support and
reassurance to beneficiaries at what can be a challenging and uncertain
time in their lives.
Our aim is simple: we reach and provide practical support to anyone living
with cancer and needing our services.
However, we are unable to do this alone. We need more supporters to talk
about us: more fundraisers to help raise funds: more volunteers to share
their expertise and time. If you feel you can help us, in whatever way, we
would love to hear from you.
