SPRING SEMESTER

2021/2022

Erasmus Student Network (ESN)

The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is a non-profit association of students and is

the largest volunteer student organization in Europe. Its aim is to support mobility

students while on exchange programs, supplying information and any kind of help

that can be voluntarily given by its members.

ESN Minho, as a local Portuguese ESN section, provides opportunities for selfdevelopment

and cultural understanding, under the main core value of “students

helping students”.

Buddy Program

The Buddy Program is an ESN Minho project that has the goal of welcoming and

helping incoming students to the cities of Braga and Guimarães. The project is

based on the principles of volunteer work and intercultural exchange.

Who are the Buddies?

Buddies are ESN Minho members that agree to welcome Erasmus students and

help them get settled.

The roles of a Buddy can involve picking up students at the airport, help them find

accommodation, assisting with enrollment processes and introducing them to their

welcoming city.

What's in it for the Buddy?

The main reward is the contact itself between Buddies and Erasmus students.

Being a Buddy is often the best way to feel the "Erasmus spirit" back home. So it's

no wonder that most Buddies have either been on an exchange program before or

intend to in the near future.

What's in it for the Erasmus student?

Erasmus students benefit primarily from all the help they get settling in. The first

few weeks are known to be the hardest for any Erasmus: facing a different country,

language and new habits. That's why the Buddy Program exists. On the other hand,

having a Buddy may be of some help in terms of making friends in the local

community. After all, there is a lot more to the Erasmus experience than classes.

ESNcard

The ESNcard is a 12-month membership card of the ESN, and it gives you access

to all the services offered by our partners. The aim of the ESNcard is to support

international students and give them access to affordable opportunities during

their period abroad.

How can I get the ESNcard?

You can get your ESN card at our ESN Minho Offices in Braga or Guimarães. We

announce the office hours in our social media channels with some days in advance

and you can check the location of our Offices in our Instagram page.

To activate the ESNcard you must register it here: https://esncard.org/

Why should I get an ESNcard?

With the ESNcard, you will enjoy plenty of discounts - housing, sport, food, bars,

etc.- all over Europe. You can check these discounts here: https://esncard.org/

You will also have the opportunity to participate in ESN events and activities - such

How does the Portuguese Healthcare System work?

All citizens from the EU member states benefit from the same treatment and costs

as Portuguese citizens, within the National Health Service (SNS), if they possess a

valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If your country is not included in this

category, you must get medical insurance or a health benefits arrangement

throughout your stay in Portugal.

After three months living in Portugal, you can register for the National Health

Service Card to get the same healthcare as any Portuguese citizen. To do this you

need to physically go to Loja do Cidadão or send them an e-mail.

To get a doctor’s appointment you must go to a health center or hospital, carrying

your EHIC. Although hospital treatments have a small fee associated, any other

examination such as x-rays and lab exams may be charged aside. Dental treatment

is usually not under the Portuguese public health program. You can also seek

professional assistance in pharmacies if you wish to buy off-the-counter

medication. Some pharmacies are open 24-hours, you just need to check their

schedules online.

The health center is the first contact for health problems that do not require urgent

medical treatment. Alternatively, especially during weekends, you can contact the

SNS24 health line, which as an English option, by dialing 808 24 24 24.

For any emergency, during the first 90 days of stay in Portugal, you must use your

EHIC for medical assistance. After having your residence permit, you can enroll in

10

the National Health System for regular medical assistance by sending an email to

inscricao.utentes.bm@arscentro.min-saude.pt with the following documents:

• European Citizen Registration, residence permit, or another document issued

by SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) regarding other legalization

situations;

• Proof of address in Portugal and/or indication of address in your home

country;

• Copy of identification card/passport;

• Copy of European Health Insurance Card or equivalent document;

• Phone number;

Alternatively, you can go directly to a Loja do Cidadão with the documents

mentioned above.

• Loja do Cidadão (Braga): https://goo.gl/maps/RJxE4AZ1LbE91kvz9

• Loja do Cidadão (Guimarães): https://goo.gl/maps/dmb2YwReTK5xuwKu9

How do I create a NIF?

There’s two ways to get a NIF (“Número de Identificação Fiscal”), which is the

Portuguese Tax File Number. You can ask it for it online or you can go to “Loja do

Cidadão” and get it on the spot.

We recommend you go with an ESNer to “Loja do Cidadão” to facilitate translation

between English and Portuguese, since most workers there do not speak English.

If you have proof of residency in Portugal, you need to bring a copy of your:

• Passport or identification document;

• Student card;

• Title of authorization of residency (if you are a citizen of the European Union,

you just need to show your Certificate of Registration of European Union

Citizenship, issued by the City Council of your residency area);

11

If you do not have a proof of residency in Portugal, you need:

• A copy of your passport or identification document;

• If you declare a foreign residency in a country not belonging to the European

Union or in Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you must assign a fiscal

representative with residency in Portugal. You can ask a member of ESN

Minho to be your representative.

• Copy of your representative’s passport or identification document;

• Student card;

If you want to request your NIF online, you need to ask a person with fiscal

residency in Portugal to do it for you in the “Portal das Finanças” website:

Contactos (portaldasfinancas.gov.pt)

In “Portal das Finanças” that person needs to select “Contacte-nos” >

”Atendimento e-balcão” > “Não residentes e Entidades Públicas” and there can

submit a question as exemplified by the figure below.

In the question submission file tax or area as “ Registo Contribuinte”, question type

as “Identific” and question as “Atrib/Alter NIF-Singulares”.

12
