MATT BUTTERFIELD and
his daughter Lucy are doing
their part to help make Banks
Peninsula predator free.
The St Albans pair have
been volunteering for Pohatu
Penguins and Predator Free
Banks Peninsula in Akaroa,
helping with an ongoing survey
and setting and checking
predator traps.
Pohatu Penguins led a peninsula-wide
penguin survey last
summer, on that survey they
found signs of predation in and
around some areas of penguin
nesting sites.
“After the survey, we knew
we had the ability to help and
we’re doing it,” said Butterfield.
Eliminating penguin
predators a family affair
“Lucy is the driving force
behind it. It’s her gig, I just
provide the boat and the
labour.”
Twelve-year-old Lucy’s passion
for helping New Zealand’s
native biodiversity stemmed
from reading about the kākāpō
on Stewart Island. While she
has been able to sponsor a
couple of kākāpō, Lucy went in
CARING: Matt Butterfield and his
daughter Lucy use a spare fishing float
and kick their way in to the hard-toreach
sea coves to set traps for predators
to protect little blue penguins.
search of something local her
and her family could help out
with.
The Butterfields have a
holiday home in Akaroa and
have been going there for eight
years.
“Birdlife is one of the
amazing things over there,”
said Butterfield.
Special
asphalt
to lower
traffic
noise laid
• By Fiona Ellis
THE INSTALLATION of low
noise asphalt has begun on QE II
Drive, the first stage of a project
aiming to lower noise in the
high-traffic area by five decibels.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport
Agency expects the work, which
started on Sunday, to be completed
between the Innes Rd
roundabout and the Christchurch
Northern Corridor motorway
bridge tomorrow.
Resident Alan Johnson said he
had noticed signs warning of lane
closures, but had yet to notice any
impact from the works.
“The roar from the rest of the
road system currently remains
just the same,” Johnson said.
Papanui-Innes Community
Board member Ali Jones said
there was a need for the asphalt
because of noise problem created
by the traffic.
Waka Kotahi NZTA had
planned to add the top coating
of the low noise asphalt to the
motorway in November, but
ongoing supply chain disruptions
have delayed some of the
materials.
NZTA director regional
relationships, James Caygill, said
at the time the delay was due to a
hold-up in getting one of the key
ingredients for the top coat.
Fashion show a stylish fundraiser
• By Fiona Ellis
WITH ALMOST $200,000 still
needed to upgrade its kitchen
and bathroom, a community
support organisation has decided
to fundraise in style.
A fashion show is set to be held
by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community
Development Trust, also
known as “126 On The Corner”,
on February 19.
Community development
worker Tracey Buunk said the
upgrades were much-needed.
Just three people were a crowd
in the kitchen, and there was no
running hot water.
In spite of this, it got plenty of
use.
“We have a cooking group
every Monday that’s been going
for 22 years.
“We also have a monthly
community lunch . . . We have
anything from 60 to 120 people”
Food preparation took place in
the main hall as the kitchen was
“far too small”.
Doing dishes was done by
transferring water from a wallmounted
boiler to the sink using
a teapot.
The toilets also did not have
running hot water, and an accessible
toilet for those with disabilities
was also needed.
The overhaul would have a
$285,000 price tag, Buunk said.
“The kitchen and toilets
[need] to be demolished, a new
READY-TO-WEAR: Community development worker Tracey Buunk with the clothes that
will be on show at 126 On The Corner’s upcoming fundraiser.
entranceway put in, the kitchen
and toilets will be rebuilt, but a
lot bigger.”
The trust had applied for New
Zealand Lotteries Commission
funding, but was uncertain if
this would be granted.
However, the fashion show was
a fun new way to raise money.
“We’ve never done anything
like it before,” Buunk said.
“There’s a lot of excitement in
the area about it.”
Volunteers were running the
fashion show, with outfits put
together by volunteer leader
Sharon Turner.
“At the moment she’s getting
the models to try on different
outfits. There’s going to be four
different categories,” Buunk said.
A high tea and prizes were also
part of the event.
Clothes worn by the models
would all be for sale afterwards
for $5 or less per piece.
“All the money from the
clothing sales goes towards the
new kitchen and toilets, as does
the money from the ticket sales.”
Due to Covid-19 restrictions,
only 50 tickets would be sold to
the public. Planning was going
well, Buunk said.
“We’re just waiting for the red
carpet to arrive.”
In Brief
SKATE PARK UPGRADE
A $392,000 project to upgrade
the Bishopdale Skate Park is now
set to take place in April, rather
than Feburary. Head of Parks
Andrew Rutledge said the project
would be delivered in conjunction
with St Albans Skate Park by
the same contractor. Work would
first first be completed at the St
Albans site as it was more susceptible
to wet conditions, whereas
the Bishopdale site was not, Rutledge
said. Work is set to begin at
the St Albans site next week.
TRUST GRANTS
Three grants have been made
in the Nor’West News area by
the New Zealand Community
Trust as part of its latest round of
funding in the Canterbury area
totalling $516,173. The Elmwood
Tennis Club is set to recieve
$30,000 towards a bathroom
refurbishment. The Belfast Sports
and Community Centre is set to
recieve $7610 for sports and gym
equipment, and the St Albans
Tennis Club has been granted
$1200 towards a contractor.
LESSONS FOR STUDENTS
from Shirley Boys’ High School
visited the New Brighton
more about a sustainable lifestyle.
The students also helped out with
Board meetings well attended
• By Fiona Ellis
LOCAL representatives in the
Nor’West News area attended a
high percentage of community
board meetings last year.
City council data has
shown members of the
Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood
Community Board attended
the majority of board
meetings and city council
staff information sessions or
briefings.
Chairwoman Bridget
Williams said she was proud of
the board attendance levels.
“Those are fairly healthy
statistics,” she said.
Board members missed a
maximum of four meetings and
nine briefings
Attendance was sometimes
a balancing act as members
juggled work and family
commitments, and the
Covid-19 pandemic posed an
ongoing challenge, Williams
said.
“There is life outside the
community board and
given the challenging
circumstances I would say
we’ve done well.”
Papanui-Innes Community
Board members also had high
attendance levels last year.
Board members missed a
maximum of just two meetings
and four briefings.
Bridget Williams
Board chairwoman Emma
Norrish said she was happy with
the turnout.
Members attended most
meetings and briefings,
and when they did not it was
Emma Norrish
for a legitimate reason, she
said.
The number of meetings
or briefings a board member
is eligible to attend may vary
between members.
Work started
after epoxy
resin arrived
•From page 1
Caygill said there was delay
getting the epoxy resin shipped
from the United States.
More low noise asphalt will be
installed on the on and off ramps
at QE II Drive and on the motorway
from February 13. This work
is planned to continue all summer.
From April, asphalt would be
installed on QE II Drive between
Main North Rd and the QE II
Drive motorway bridge and Cranford
St between the roundabout
and the QE II Drive motorway
bridge.
Sealing work will take place
overnight from 8pm to 6am,
with detours and road closures
sign-posted. The roads will be
reopened during the day.
“As traffic management and
other road work, like line marking,
will still be happening in this
area during the day please drive
to the posted speeds and take
extra care driving in this area.
All asphalt work is weather and
temperature dependent, dates for
this work may take longer and
conversely, if we have great conditions,
we may be able to speed up
our programme,” NZTA said in a
statement.
“The Christchurch City Council
roads: QE II Drive west and
Cranford St are planned for later
in our sealing programme as we
are awaiting the remaining epoxy.”
Penguin nesting sites decimated
• From page 1
“We just feel that if we don’t
do something then there won’t
be penguins in the harbour
anymore.”
Lucy got in contact with
Pohatu Penguins co-owner
Averil Parthonnaud and her
husband Kevin and she has
been helping them out where
she can.
“They’re the real heroes,”
said Butterfield.
In October 2020, a group of
community leaders and over
60 volunteers surveyed Banks
Peninsula to identify penguin
numbers, 20 years after the
first significant peninsula-wide
survey was performed.
The Horomaka Kororā
Survey was started in 2020
with the purpose being
to estimate the current
population size of little
penguins on Banks Peninsula.
Butterfield and Lucy helped
out when the survey resumed
at the end of last year.
“We found two quite large
nesting sites inside the Akaroa
Harbour that were just getting
decimated by stoats,” said
Butterfield.
Since then, he and Lucy have
set about 16 traps in the two
big nesting spots.
“Matt was installing BT200
traps in and around the sea
coves within the Akaroa
Harbour. The BT200 trap is a
humane kill-trap designed for
stoats,” said PFBP operations
manager Tim Sjoberg.
With his teenage sons Tom
and Charlie helping out,
Butterfield uses his boat to get
to the more difficult-to-reach
sea coves then he and Lucy
swim in.
“We’ve got a spare
fishing float, we hang on
the back of that and kick
ourselves in, one of my sons
will sit on the boat while
SUCCESS: Lucy
Butterfield checking traps
that have been set at
Akaroa Harbour.
we swim 20m to the shore,”
Butterfield said.
An estimated 68,000
native birds are killed in New
Zealand by introduced pests
every night, and 25 million
killed every year, PFBP website
states.
“It is the collective mahi,
like Matt’s [and Lucy’s], that
will really make a difference
for our taonga species,” PFBP
communications manager
Vanessa Mander said.
“We are buoyed by the
effort, passion and
commitment shown by our
community,” she said.
Anyone can help out,
whether that’s with backyard
trapping, volunteering with
local trapping group or
starting a trap line.
Mother-son duo takes on Bugsy Malone
Teenager Oliver Bol
is making a name
for himself in theatre,
but he is aiming for
the bright lights of
Hollywood. Emily
Moorhouse reports
OLIVER WAS introduced to
performance at the age of three,
and started off playing small
parts and extras in children’s
plays. Since then, he has
performed in a variety of roles.
Now, at 18, he recently took
on the lead role of Bugsy in Elmwood
Players sold-out musical
Bugsy Malone – with the help
of his mother Franc Bol, who
directed the show.
Oliver’s first real memory of
being on stage was at seven, playing
an extra in Rumpelstiltskin
and quickly falling in love with
the rush of performing.
Having a mum that worked
for Imagine Youth Theatre saw
Oliver’s interest in theatre and
performance grow. He was always
auditioning for school plays
and enrolling in drama classes.
Last year he landed a spot in
the Court Theatre Youth Company,
something he described as
an incredible and very fulfilling
experience.
“There’s something about the
rush at the end [of a show] when
the whole audience is clapping
and cheering and it just feels
good,” he said. “Like you’ve just
entertained all of these people
and you’ve made so many people
smile or cry depending on what
show you’re in, I guess.”
Oliver had landed big roles
before, such as Mickey from
Blood Brothers, but admitted
he was “kind of in shock” upon
finding out he would play the
lead role Bugsy Malone.
“At first I didn’t fully believe it
and then it properly hit me and
I was like, oh wait, the show is
called Bugsy Malone and that’s
me,” he said. “It’s about me,
that’s cool.”
Although the role of Bugsy
has been stressful and has meant
Oliver hasn’t had a big holiday
break, he said he wouldn’t have
had it any other way.
“There’s something I weirdly
enjoy about the stress of needing
to know all your lines and
needing to be in the right spot
for going on stage and getting
into costume fast and all that,”
he said. “There’s just something
about the rush and the energy.”
Oliver said working alongside
his mum Franc, who directed
the show, has been easy as she
understands the struggles and
stresses show biz can present.
“I think because she’s in the
same boat career-wise as me I
guess she just understands it better,”
he said. “I’ve always found it
easy to work with her.”
As for the cast, Oliver said he
thinks they’ve done an amazing
job and the acting, signing and
dancing was “really good.”
“I’ve made friends who I love
to bits,” he said. “They’re all great
people.”
Franc said while directing the
show has been a lot of fun and
rewarding, the planning did present
some challenges early on.
Being set in the 1920s, she
described the show as having
some “outdated” aspects and was
particularly wary of the public
shootings, in spite of being with
marshmallow guns.
“Even if it’s with cream pies
and marshmallow guns it still
felt kind of wrong,” she said.
After some thinking, Franc
tweaked the script and designed
the show to be kids playing the
game of Bugsy Malone so when
characters got shot they were
‘out’ rather than being killed.
“It still goes into the 1920s
gangster but it’s now got this
underlying story of kids playing
a game, which has lent us to having
so much fun with it.”
Franc was pleased to see how
involved the kids’ parents got
with the show, from helping
design the set to participating in
weekend workshops leading up
to opening night.
“The support of everyone
involved just makes it so achievable,”
she said. “Because the
community got on board I don’t
think it was as stressful as it
could’ve been.”
While Franc said she was
proud of Oliver for getting the
lead role, she admitted it was
“slightly awkward” in the auditions
process.
She was thankful that the casting
panel had other directors and
managers, and said she even left
the room during the discussion
about casting Oliver as Bugsy.
“I’m so very proud as both a
mum and a director,” she said.
“It’s a joy to work with him, he’s
very invested in the show and
has been a great help in many
other respects as well.”
The show faced a rocky start
with Covid and lockdowns
postponing opening night from
October to January, resulting in
losing some cast members along
the way.
“It’s the kind of show that you
can’t really rehearse through
Skype,” she said. “That was
pretty nerve-racking.”
However, Franc was relieved
to be able to go ahead with the
show under the red traffic
light system.
In the end, all the stress and
ACTOR: Oliver Bol has been involved in theatre since he
was three-years-old.
LEAD ROLE: Oliver Bol played Bugsy Malone in the soldout
show of the same name, put on by Elmwood Players.
He said it took a while to sink in that the show was about
his character. Aashma Goldfarb (above right) played
Tallulah.
hard work paid off when Franc
watched the kids take their place
on stage, describing the show as
seeing pieces of the puzzle come
together.
“The look at the reaction of
their audience just made it all
worthwhile,” she said. “Hearing
them laugh and clap and cheer
and even cry . . . Seeing all of that
come together was an absolute
highlight.”
Franc said while she loved
hearing audience feedback, her
favourite was from dads who had
been “dragged along” to watch a
kids show.
“They’ve come up afterwards
going ‘oh I was expecting a
kids show, I didn’t realise it was
going to so be professional and
so much fun to watch’. In some
ways it’s better feedback than official
reviews,” Franc said.
While the cast was made up
entirely of children and young
people, Franc was impressed
with how well each member
handled rehearsals and the
energy they brought to the stage,
even when performing twice
a day.
“They were exhausted behind
the scenes but the moment they
were on stage [they] 100 per cent
gave it their all,” she said. “I take
my hat off to them, they were
more than professional.”
The sold-out show had its last
performance over the weekend,
leaving the cast with time to
relax after months of hard
work.
Looking ahead, Oliver plans
to continue to pursuing performance
and even talked about
wanting to act in films, but said
it was important to stay true to
yourself.
“Even though acting is usually
about trying to be someone else
if you’re trying to audition, or
meeting people if you’re in some
sort of new course or class, I
think it’s better to be yourself,”
he said.
“There will always be someone
who has done less or someone
who has done more than you,
and there will always be someone
out there who will absolutely
love you and the way that you
work and the way that you talk
and speak and move, or they’ll
see a way to help you grow your
abilities more.”
THAT’S A WRAP: Oliver’s mum, director Franc Bol, said she
had a lot of fun working with the young cast.
