Fashion show a stylish fundraiser

WITH ALMOST $200,000 still
needed to upgrade its kitchen
and bathroom, a community
support organisation has decided
to fundraise in style.
A fashion show is set to be held
by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community
Development Trust, also
known as “126 On The Corner”,
on February 19.
Community development
worker Tracey Buunk said the
upgrades were much-needed.
Just three people were a crowd
in the kitchen, and there was no
running hot water.
In spite of this, it got plenty of
use.
“We have a cooking group
every Monday that’s been going
for 22 years.
“We also have a monthly
community lunch . . . We have
anything from 60 to 120 people”
Food preparation took place in
the main hall as the kitchen was
“far too small”.
Doing dishes was done by
transferring water from a wallmounted
boiler to the sink using
a teapot.
The toilets also did not have
running hot water, and an accessible
toilet for those with disabilities
was also needed.
The overhaul would have a
$285,000 price tag, Buunk said.
“The kitchen and toilets

entranceway put in, the kitchen
and toilets will be rebuilt, but a
lot bigger.”
The trust had applied for New
Zealand Lotteries Commission
funding, but was uncertain if
this would be granted.
However, the fashion show was
a fun new way to raise money.
“We’ve never done anything
like it before,” Buunk said.
“There’s a lot of excitement in
the area about it.”
Volunteers were running the
fashion show, with outfits put
together by volunteer leader
Sharon Turner.
“At the moment she’s getting
the models to try on different
outfits. There’s going to be four
different categories,” Buunk said.
A high tea and prizes were also
part of the event.
Clothes worn by the models
would all be for sale afterwards
for $5 or less per piece.
“All the money from the
clothing sales goes towards the
new kitchen and toilets, as does
the money from the ticket sales.”
Due to Covid-19 restrictions,
only 50 tickets would be sold to
the public. Planning was going
well, Buunk said.
“We’re just waiting for the red
carpet to arrive.”

SKATE PARK UPGRADE
A $392,000 project to upgrade
the Bishopdale Skate Park is now
set to take place in April, rather
than Feburary. Head of Parks
Andrew Rutledge said the project
would be delivered in conjunction
with St Albans Skate Park by
the same contractor. Work would
first first be completed at the St
Albans site as it was more susceptible
to wet conditions, whereas
the Bishopdale site was not, Rutledge
said. Work is set to begin at
the St Albans site next week.
TRUST GRANTS
Three grants have been made
in the Nor’West News area by
the New Zealand Community
Trust as part of its latest round of
funding in the Canterbury area
totalling $516,173. The Elmwood
Tennis Club is set to recieve
$30,000 towards a bathroom
refurbishment. The Belfast Sports
and Community Centre is set to
recieve $7610 for sports and gym
equipment, and the St Albans
Tennis Club has been granted
$1200 towards a contractor.
LESSONS FOR STUDENTS
Twenty-nine student leaders
from Shirley Boys’ High School
visited the New Brighton
Community Gardens to learn
more about a sustainable lifestyle.
The students also helped out with
installing a cabin for a blind and
deaf sculptor.
