Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s
excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny
on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we
talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard,
who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay
of the land.
The place: The local watering hole of Cape May — the Ugly Mug
on the Washington Street Mall. It’s owned by the same crew behind
Delaney’s and Cape May Fish Market.
The vibe: It’s unheard of for Nicole to be inside the Mug during
daylight hours, but Kayla suggested going out for a change rather than
eating at our desks (poor little overworked urchins that we are). It
was a quiet Friday afternoon with the bar about half full and a few
groups filling up a few tables. No matter who’s in your company, at the
Mug the ceiling is always a conversation starter. The ceiling is filled
with... just take a guess. Each mug hangs from the ceiling in memory
of someone in town we’ve lost and a few others for notable achievements,
specifically winners of the annual froth-blowing contest. Next
time you visit, look up and see if you can find a name of someone you
know. It may take a while, due to the sheer volume of mugs dangling
down, but it’s a fun feature of this Cape May landmark.
The server: Ervin started working at the Mug in April and has
worn quite a few caps — host, food runner, barback and now a server.
He’s a local and once he found out the Mug was hiring, he came running.
“It’s great money and a very casual place to work,” he says. “The
Mug is a lot of fun, and the food is pretty good, too. I love our cheesesteaks.”
The food: The hunger pangs were taking a toll on both Kayla and
Nicole, so their food thankfully came out pretty pronto. Kayla enjoyed
a bacon cheeseburger and Nicole went for a turkey club. They both
came with chips and pickles — always a nice addition, especially with
us both trying to avoid French fries.
The takeaway: The Ugly Mug is a great spot for friends and family,
day or night. Enjoy lunch, have a few drinks with friends or grab a
barstool and scan the sports highlights. Also, any tips on the return of
the froth-blowing contest? Our hopeful readers would love to hear!

Undertow
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
Happy New Year! (Feel free to grumble
like Larry David that you can
only wish people a happy new year
until mid-January, tops, and here
we are in early February and I’ll
just skip right past you, whistling “Dixie”
because I don’t care. You’ll take this “Happy
New Year!” and you’ll like it.)
At the risk of being a winter Debbie
Downer (there is no worse month than
February, with the exception of January,
which you can still see smoldering in the
rearview if you squint) but I was all ready to
hit the ground running in 2022. Clean slates,
fresh starts and all that crap. I got a new job
(more later), I was getting back behind the
mic (more later) and was looking forward
to starting my 52nd Annual I’m Going To
Lose Weight And I Really Mean It This Time
Diet (more later) when the weather and
my immune system stepped in and made a
mockery of me and my stupid “plans.”
The new job is with Cape Island Foods
(Cape May Peanut Butter Co, Cape May
Olive Oil, Cape May Cheese Shop) where,
after 47 weeks of delivering Exit Zero magazine
around most of Lower Township, I
got to do something completely different
and… deliver Cape May Peanut Butter, Cape
May Olive Oil and Cape May Cheese around
most of Lower Township. Sigh… just strong
Delivery Guy energy, I suppose. I’m quite
enjoying the new job, but missed a big chunk
of it with a flu that kept me in bed for most of
the first half of January. I’m telling you, you
could set your watch by when I get the flu.
Every January, MLK weekend, usually with
about 65 Beatles songs to sing (more later).
Then a couple of big-for-Cape-May
snowstorms cost me a couple of Exit Zero
gigs, but overall it’s been awesome getting
back to singing. So far I’ve played gigs with
three of my four new partners (if anyone
sees Tim Joyce and wants to make him feel
better, tell him it took four guys to replace
him); Mike Stevens, a piano player who
indulges all my Billy Joel deep cut urges.
Dave Hughes, a young guy who plays guitar
with a funky old soul. And Jerry Kolber,
ol’ reliable, the senior statesman, Old Man
River (hahahahahaha! I make jokes because
Jerry is old, but he is also a fine guitarist
and learns all the weird WXPN shit I want
to play). Next week I break in #4 as Charlie
Wigo and I play our first shows together.
Charlie is a dedicated Dead Head. It is my
hope to cure him of that affliction.
And the plus side of being sick for two
weeks? (Drum roll please…) That’s right, it’s
time for… Weekly Weight & Beard Watch:
out a bit for winter so it’s kind
of fluffy at the moment. And
soft. From all the conditioner
I’ve been using on it. I believe
the kids call this “product.” The
weight? Well, after a concerted
effort to shed girth in 2020
spurred by tipping the scales at
a ghastly 252.5 lbs, I managed to
get down to 219.5 lbs for about a
day and a half. I then spent most
of 2021 putting those 33 lbs back
on, topping out at 251.5 around
the holidays. With a long, deep,
sad sigh, I cut (most of) the bad
stuff from my diet, reduced my
intake of carbs from a million to
a few, got sick for two weeks and
write to you today at a still-wobbly
but somewhat lighter 238.
So… here we are. Only 46 more
weeks to read about it.
Overall, I’m pretty happy at
Bank of America. What I don’t
need are emails telling me I
“may” have insufficient funds.
Believe me, Bank of America, I’m
acutely aware of how insufficient
my funds are. (On an unrelated
note, my PayPal is terryoke1.
Ahem.)
Had I known when I zapped
my old Facebook and started a
new one that I’d have to go back
to the beginning of Candy Crush
I may have seriously reconsidered.
I’m now 24,000 levels
behind Sandra Deabenderfer.
If Charlee (my Rottweiler-
Sharpei) is to be believed, the
difference between cat treats and
dog treats is zero.
Super Power of the Week:
Over Christmas break, my son
Owen remarked how cool it was
that Betty White was about to
turn 100. I cautioned that maybe
we shouldn’t count those chickens
just yet. So… yeah. Around
this time I began obsessively listening
to the great Jim Steinman
song “Tonight is What It Means
to Be Young.” Steinman wrote
most of Meat Loaf’s biggest hits.
So… yeah. Then Owen remarked
how Classic Rock (the second-worst
musical genre after
reggae) was dominating the
sales charts and I said, “I think
maybe it’s time for the Boomers
to stop being in charge of everything”
and lo and behold here
comes Joe Rogan, the Boomer
Slayer. So… yeah. I’m just saying,
if you see your name in this
column, you may want to spend
some time in a bomb shelter. In
the meantime, I promise to use
my powers only for good.
Nice Moment of the Week:
Last Saturday, while singing
Sturgill Simpson’s version
of “The Promise,” originally a
delightful 80s synth-pop hit for
When In Rome, I was just kind
of concentrating on getting the
lyrics right and staying in tune
as it was the first time Dave and
I were playing it, which is why it
was so surprising that, when I
finished, the audience gave me a
huge round of applause and my
wife said, “Oh my god, you made
me cry!” As the over-emotional
weenie you all know me to be, it
took before I could squeak out a
“thanks.”
Sadly, I must give Reacher,
the Amazon Prime series based
on Lee Childs’ first Jack Reacher
book, Killing Floor, a C+. I’ve
been devouring the books and
absolutely love them and am a
huge fan of the Tom Cruise movies
(as I am of all Tom Cruise
movies), but was stoked to see a
long-form treatment combined
with the casting of a guy (Alan
Ritchson) who looks like the Jack
Reacher from the books. It’s all…
fine. And reasonably faithful to
the source material. But, while
I believed this Reacher was a
physical force of nature, not for
one second did I buy that he
was a genius deductive reasoner.
And if they wanted Julie Garner
(brilliant as Ruth on Netflix’s
Ozark) to play the Georgia cop,
they should have just hired Julie
Garner.
I don’t know who needs
to hear this, but nobody cares
about your Wordle score.
’Til next week, don’t get
We respect people who have talent
and worth, but that won’t save
the world until we realize every
single person has both. Disney’s
Encanto focuses on a multi-generational
family living in one of my favorite
countries — Colombia. The Madrigals all have
superpowers (well, all but one).
Grandmother (voiced by Colombian
native Maria Cecilia Botero) was given an
enchanted house which helped her raise her
triplets as a widow. It also gave the three
babies special abilities. Her daughter can
magically heal people. Her granddaughter has
the strength of Hercules. One grandson is a
sort of shape shifter. But this isn’t the X-Men.
There’s no costumes or super villains. And
what about that outsider in the family?
This is the 60th animated film from
Disney. The music is wonderful (did you
expect less from Lin-Manuel Miranda?), the
animation is vibrant, and the storyline fits
them both. The result is a fantastical exploration
of what it means to be gifted and also to
The Movie Column
By arts columnist Tom Sims
struggle finding your talent and place.
Mirabel (voiced by Argentinian-born
Stephanie Beatriz) is the only member of the
family to never receive a gift. The story takes
place as her younger cousin is preparing for a
milestone birthday where he should receive
a gift — and does. He’s close to animals that
now he can talk to them. Mirabel is glad and
saddened that her young cousin was bestowed
— but wondering why the gift skipped her.
This film has universal appeal. What does
it mean to have extraordinary talent? What if
you only have ordinary talent? Wouldn’t it be
great if teachers stopped separating “gifted”
children and tried to bring out the gifts in all
children, no matter the measure. We all bring
something special to the table — something
nobody else brings in exactly the same way. So
why do we idolize the superstars?
I loved this film, but lately for Disney
films the real test is whether I feel the burning
desire to go back and see it again (and again).
Zootopia — twice when it came out in 2016,
Inside Out — more like five times in 2015. Coco
(2017) — three times. And don’t even get me
started about the Toy Story franchise. Encanto?
I saw it once, and I’m happy I did. I’m good.
The other movies were entirely profound and
deeply moving. Then they would be completely
funny and fun! Encanto was clearly a
dazzling film. While it didn’t rise to that next
level, it still was definitely worth the watch
and likely a strong Oscar contender. Go get
enchanted.
Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
As the clock ticks down to Valentine’s
Day, you should know that many
bird species have already advanced
into amorous mode. Great-horned
Owls and Bald Eagles started their
courtships back in December and January.
Both species are already incubating eggs.
With food plentiful and nothing much else to
do, you might as well mate.
For new couples the courtship is protracted,
but in birds that mate for life, like
eagles, the fireworks (high circling, talon
touching and food passing) may be only a
matter of days. The big question is how much
repair does the old nest need? Great-horned
Owls don’t build their own nests, but appropriate
the nests of other large raptors, such
as Red-tailed Hawks (which are courting,
now). Bald Eagles build huge nests, in fact
nest building is something of a fetish with
both birds involved in bringing in branches to
flesh out the nest, typically seated in a tall tree
(conifers preferred) whose crown projects
above the canopy. Nests may take up to three
months to construct and with branches added
every season, older nests may weigh over a
ton, hence, the need for a mature tree with
strong limbs. In windstorms and years with
heavy snowpack, the nest tree may topple —
hopefully, before the 1-3 eggs are laid. In the
Cape May/Cumberland region, I know of five
nests, one south of the canal where young will
hatch in March, about the time Osprey return
to the region.
Other signs of the season include the
spirited courtship of the Long-tailed Duck,
a pied sea duck that breeds beside tundra
ponds in the arctic but spend the off-season
foraging for shellfish in ocean inlets. Scoters
are also pairing off now. Also, tundra breeders,
it makes good sense to arrive in the Arctic
already paired. This way newly arrived pairs
can get right down to the important business
of nesting without all the messiness of courtship
that our species seems so enamored of.
To see Long-tailed Ducks and other hardy
sea ducks, you can checkout Hereford and
Townsend’s Inlet, but a few birds often hang
around the 2nd Avenue Jetty in Cape May
and the waters around the concrete ship.
The birds are most active and vocal early in
the morning. Should you hear a quacking
sound, it’s not a duck, but Red-throated Loon,
another winter resident. Don’t look for the
namesake maroon throat, the birds do not
usually don these until the reach the Arctic.
But the birds can be identified by their rapier-fine,
slightly up-turned bills.
The Activity Column
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learn about courtship in the animal world!
Love makes fools of us all — and not
just humans. Animals also do crazy
things in the name of courtship. This
Valentine’s Day weekend, the Nature
Center of Cape May offers a chance to
listen to the “love stories of the wild.”
Romance can be hard, and it’s the rare
human who doesn’t have a wince-worthy
moment or two in her romantic past. If you’ve
ever temporarily lost your mind to love, consider
that corals don’t even have a mind, yet
they still experience synchronized lunacy
— corals coordinate their annual spawning
around the full moon. Awkward flirters may
relate to sandhill cranes – their gawky mating
ritual would be right at home in a middle-school
dance. Some animals give gifts to
their mates — penguins give pebbles, scorpion
flies give dead bugs, and humpback dolphins
give sponges. The male praying mantis may
give his own head. Some animals use their
talents to impress a partner. For example,
Satin Bowerbirds build artsy nests, decorated
with bits of blue, incorporating berries and
flowers along with bits of blue trash. Puffer
fish create elaborate patterns in the sand to
attract mates. Many birds sing to attract their
mates, but the male sage grouse goes one step
further, making a popping noise while strutting
and inflating his chest. This impressive
display doesn’t immediately cause the female
sage grouse to swoon — she is picky and may
take a month to make her choice.
Learn about these and other dramatic
mating rituals on Saturday, February 12, at
11am at the Nature Center of Cape May.
Admission is $15 for non-members, $10 for
members. To register, visit njaudubon.org/
event/wildlife-love-stories. This program is
for adults and would be a great first date!
Novelty is a part of a successful human
romance so, consider sharing a new hobby
and join the Great Backyard Bird Count. This
worldwide program lets you contribute to
a massive bird database with as little as 15
minutes of counting over four days, February
18-21. Birds tell us so much about the environment
and scientists need information on
changing populations. By recording the birds
seen in your yard or neighborhood, you can
become a “citizen scientist” and contribute to
the database. Visit birdcount.org and you’ll
also find tips to make your count accurate,
how to handle large flocks, and where to find
bird-related apps, as well as how the data
is used. The Great Backyard Bird Count is
sponsored by the National Audubon Society,
Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada.
simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate
the wisdom herein.
Dear Answer Lady
I am 26 and have always had a difficult time
finding someone compatible to date. After
the New Year, I joined an online dating site. I
agreed to meet the gentleman at Delaney’s for
drinks. He was nothing like his photo. He was
very nice, and we got along well, but he was not
who I thought I was meeting. I am not good at
confrontation so when he asked me out again,
I agreed. Thankfully, he does not live in Cape
May, but at Exit 80. I don’t want to offend him,
but I cannot stop focusing on his deception.
What’s the best way to handle this? Plus, I
don’t want any repercussions. — Deceived
Dear Deceived
Ah a common problem, also known as
being Catfished. Explain you’ve had second
The Answer Lady
Wise answers to perplexing questions
thoughts about dating someone so far up the
Parkway. Tell him that between work and other
interests it will be difficult. Don’t worry about
repercussions — the Answer Lady suspects he
has a history of duplicity, and this isn’t his first
phony pony ride. You need to focus on yourself
and be more assertive — not obnoxious —
assertive. Treat yourself to an Original Fudge
Kitchen box of salty caramels. Embrace the
sweet-salty nature of that confection.
Dear Answer Lady
I pop by my father’s every Wednesday to
check on him. We also like to enjoy treats from
the Cheese Shop and share a bottle of shiraz
from Sunset Liquors. I arrived a little early last
week and there on the kitchen counter was a,
let’s call it a pleasure device, recharging. His
girlfriend is out of town visiting her family.
My father is no longer married to my mother
because of his serial philandering. When I saw
it, I yelled upstairs to my father that I left the
wine in the car to give him time to rearrange —
which he did. Do I tell his girlfriend or not? —
Too Much Knowledge
Dear Too Much
Of course, you should not tell his
girlfriend. You are his daughter not his moral
conscience. He may not have one of his own
but that is not your problem. And if you were
to act, it should have been done before you left
the house. Since you wisely chose to ignore
the whole thing – trust your instincts and stay
out of it. For all you know, your father and his
girlfriend have an “understanding.”
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
PONGO is a senior boy who came to the shelter
as a stray. He has warmed up to staff and
volunteers and is ready for a new home. Pongo
has a lot of energy and walks well on a leash.
He needs a slow introduction to other animals
but would be good in a home with other dogs
and cats. Pongo will still need his space but
will make a wonderful companion.
GEM is a senior girl who came to the shelter
when she was abandoned. She is a loving dog
who loves human interaction. Gem has excellent
leash manners, loves long walks and playing
in the yard. She is calm around other dogs
and needs a slow introduction to cats. Gem is
also good with children and would make an
ideal pet for a family that will love her energy.
COOKIE is a sensitive, one-and-a-half-yearold
girl who warms up when given positive
attention. Cookie is learning leash skills and
basic behavior cues. She needs a slow introduction
to dogs and cats but seems to be comfortable
in their presence. Cookie will be great
for a family looking for a sweet and loving
young dog.
Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 609-465-8923
SNOWBALL is a wonderful cat who is very
social but also independent. She welcomes
attention, but not too much — she enjoys
her quiet time to herself. Snowball is housetrained
and would do well in a home with
other cats, dogs and children. If interested in
adopting Snowball into your family, contact
the shelter.
CALVIN is a beautiful and sweet boy who
loves to be held and curl up next to you after
playing. He is smart and will bring a lot of
affection and love into your home. Calvin can
be a little shy but will warm up when given
some time. He is up to date on all vaccinations
and would do well in a home with other cats
and dogs.
BETTY WHITE came to the shelter as a stray
and is between 12 and 15 years old. She is the
sweetest cat and quite the couch potato. Betty
is very gentle and loves her naps — she can lay
around all day. She is up to date on all vaccinations
and would be good in a home with children.
If interested in adopting Betty, contact
the shelter.
