Juniper taken by electric fault
• By Kristie Boland
THE FIRE that killed Robyn
Jordaan’s dog Juniper and left
her with nothing was caused
by an electrical fault.
Emergency services
were called to the blaze at
Jordaan’s
rental home
on Jacksons
Rd in
Lyttelton last
Wednesday
morning.
Mark
Buckley
Lyttelton
Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief
fire officer Mark Buckley
confirmed said the fire was
caused by an “electrical wiring
fault.”
Jordaan had got up at
5.30am to take her flatmate
Fraser Mackenzie to the
airport. About an hour
later, there was an electrical
explosion in a circuit that
runs from the kitchen to
the lounge where Juniper,
the one-year-old labrador
pointer spaniel cross, was
asleep on the couch.
“I was told from
neighbours that there was
just this big bang and huge
explosion in the roof and
then the rest of the house
caught on fire,” said Jordaan.
She had gone straight from
the airport to a yoga class
and did not have her phone
on her.
About 8.30am, she checked
her phone and found
multiple missed calls from
police and neighbours.
ELECTRICAL faults.
They can cause all sorts of
fire carnage and in the case
of Robyn Jordaan, one sadly
claimed her dog Juniper last
week (see page 1).
Robyn got up early to take
her flatmate to the airport. Juniper
was asleep on the couch.
About an hour later, there
was an electrical explosion
in a circuit that ran from the
kitchen to the lounge.
The house in Jacksons Rd,
Lyttelton, went up in flames
and Juniper was unable to
escape.
Said Robyn: “She was a
news
really, really special dog. She
was so young, she didn’t even
get to live a full life.”
And on another sad note,
Queenie, Lyttelton’s iconic cat,
has passed away (see page 7).
The tributes are rolling.
Tongan tsunami: Did you hear
a boom or notice any effects?
RESEARCHERS want to know if
people living on Banks Peninsula
noticed any effects of the Tongan
eruption and tsunami on coastal
areas.
In a nationwide survey by
GeoNet, a geological hazard
monitoring system, researchers
are asking for observations of
the sea and coastal areas as well
as any “booming” sounds heard
around the time of the eruption
on January 15.
GeoNet said the information
received from the survey results
can help improve tsunami
forecasts and can assist in
education about tsunamis
generally.
Banks Peninsula is particularly
vulnerable to tsunamis from
across the Pacific Ocean because
of the Chatham Rise, a large
underwater plateau extending
1,400km east of Banks Peninsula.
More than 1500 properties
across Banks Peninsula, including
those surrounding Lyttelton
Harbour, are considered under
threat of flooding in a tsunami.
Recent tsunami events like that
triggered by the 2016 Kaikōura
earthquake have highlighted the
importance of education and
planning for such occurrences.
The 2016 tsunami was the biggest
local-source tsunami in New
Zealand since 1947.
GeoNet reported that the
tsunami waves caused by the
Kaikōura earthquake would have
been almost unnoticeable as they
silently travelled south through
the open waters off the North
Canterbury coast.
Once the waves reached Banks
Peninsula, 90 minutes after the
earthquake, Little Pigeon Bay was
hit by tsunami surges at the head
of the bay that were bigger and
more forceful than those seen in
other northern Banks Peninsula
bays, and caused damage to a
100-year-old cottage.
Following this, tsunami evacuation
zones for Canterbury were
updated in 2020.
On most of Banks Peninsula,
there are two tsunami evacuation
zones – a red zone and an orange
zone. In Birdlings Flat there are
three – red, orange and yellow.
The red zone is most likely
to be affected by a tsunami. It
includes estuaries, rivers, beaches
and harbours, where a tsunami
SMOKE ALARM SAVES
LYTTELTON FLATTER
A smoke alarm alerted a woman
and her neighbours to a fire in the
kitchen of a flat on Winchester
St, Lyttelton, on Sunday. The
Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade
responded to the fire about
midnight at the flat, which was
part of a block of units called
Briggs Row. It was caused by a pot
with oil in it that had over heated.
FIRE-DAMAGED
COTTAGE REPAIRS
Work has started to repair the
historic Boyd Cottages on the
corner of Winchester and Oxford
Sts, Lyttelton, after they were
damaged in a fire in May last
year. No one was hurt in the
early morning blaze but there
was extensive damage and the
city council-owned cottages were
uninhabitable.
SEPTIC TANK
EXTENSION BID
Birdlings Flat residents are hoping
for a 10-year extension on their septic
tank discharge consent. Some
residents received letters from Environment
Canterbury saying their
resource consent will finish in July/
August and they need to apply for
a new consent for discharge. Banks
Peninsula Community Board
chairwoman Tori Pedan said about
23 residents had been “singled out”
and told they will need to apply for
a new consent.
Goodall aims for 13th time
lucky in Coast To Coast
• By Chris Barclay
SAM GOODALL extinguishes
flames for a living, but there’s
one fire that continues to burn
for the multisport athlete – the
quest for a podium finish in the
Coast To Coast endurance race.
The 37-year-old firefighter
tackles the epic Longest Day
from Kumara on the West Coast
to New Brighton beach for the
13th time on Saturday, with the
goal of improving on last year’s
fourth placing.
Goodall, who lives in Lyttelton
and works shifts out of the Anzac
fire station in Wainoni, hit the
beach less than five minutes behind
third placegetter and longtime
rival Ryan Kiesanowski.
He has already had several dry
runs over the run and kayaking
legs of the 243km traverse,
with his standard preparation
programme ramping up from
December.
“The weather’s been pretty
good over the last six weeks.
Training has been a little bit
easier without having to battle
weather and changing days to get
out on the course,” he said.
However, his chances of
cracking the top-three could be
compromised by a grim weather
forecast.
HIGH WATER: Kayaking specialist Sam Goodall hopes his
strongest leg of the Coast To Coast’s Longest Day will not
be removed for safety reasons.
PHOTO: KATHMANDU COAST TO COAST
A kayaking specialist, Goodall
fears the 70km leg on the Waimakariri
River will be scrapped
for safety reasons, condemning
him to more time on the road to
Christchurch.
“We’re due some pretty horrific
weather. It’s looking highly likely
there’s not going to be a kayak,
that doesn’t suit me at all,” he
said.
“There’s a 90 per cent chance
there won’t be a mountain run
either.”
“That changes the whole
dynamic. There’s guys, the
strong runners and cyclists, that
wouldn’t really be in the ballpark
if we were doing the normal
course. Now they could be right
up there,” Goodall said.
Organisers were expected to
rule on the course format on
Thursday.
Despite the potential setback,
Goodall was undeterred and
determined the hours of hard
graft around Arthur’s Pass and
closer to home on the Port Hills
will not be in vain.
“This is the pinnacle if you
want to do outdoor sports and
test yourself against what I
believe to be the best athletes in
outdoor sports, this is the race to
do,” he said.
Goodall will see some familiar
faces at the start line with defending
champion Dougal Allan,
last year’s runner-up Sam Mason
and Kiesanowski again among
the leading contenders.
•From page 1
Her first port of a call to find
out what happened was a police
constable.
“He informed me of what had
happened and I asked about
Juniper and he said no, sadly
she’s gone.”
Jordaan drove to Lyttelton to
find all of her and Mackenzie’s
possessions had been burnt
or damaged in the fire. The
only thing salvageable was
Mackenzie’s guitar, which to
their surprise was still in tune.
As the shock lessened, the
reality of losing Juniper started
to set in.
“When I arrived, there was all
these logistics I had to sort out
before I could even face what
had actually occurred and what
that meant for my life, and also
I guess just trying to process the
fact that I’d lost my sidekick,”
said Jordaan.
Juniper was a friendly dog,
with one blue eye and one
brown, who stole the hearts of
many in Lyttelton.
Jordaan.
“I think a lot of people
While she figures out her next
INSTORE!
Kees Bruin: Visions of the Real
by John c stringer and Kees Bruin
Two years after graduating, Kees Bruin was exhibiting alongside Leo Bensemann, Don
Binney, Doris Lusk, Trevor Moffitt, Peter Siddell, Olivia Spencer-Bower, Grahame Sydney,
Robin White, and Brent Wong. For more than five decades of dedicated painterly
practice and exhibition, Kees Bruin has established a unique visionary identity within
the framework of New Zealand realism that is enthusiastically commissioned and
collected internationally. His three overlapping categories: photo-realism, super-realism
and what he terms “visionary-realism,” sprung from a personal search for all things
truth hence his clever use of symbol, have gifted us exquisite panoramic landscapes,
expressions of cultural pursuits such as surfing and skateboarding often imbued with
metaphor, single and group portraits, reinterpretations of masters, especially the Dutch
Golden Age, elaborated ‘still-lifes’ and works that explore elements of western Judaeo-
Christian histories combined with contemporaneous fashions, settings and views to and
from the earth. This personal genre launches us as art viewers into emotional odysseys
of timeless human concern: Spirituality, the universe, beauty, truth, life and death, sex,
betrayal, vanity and loss, as well as using paint to express beauty for its own sake.
Rise by siya Kolisi
‘Siya Kolisi is a warrior on the field and an inspiration off it. This book is an extraordinary reminder
of what can be achieved with inner belief and an indefatigable spirit.’ JAY SHETTY ‘Siya’s story is well
documented, and I am so impressed by the way he conducts himself. As the captain of his team and
as a statesman he is measured and thoughtful. He is a leader in every way. An inspiration to a dynamic
South African nation.’ EDDIE JONES His truth. His story. In his words. There have been many comments
made and books written about Siya Kolisi, captain of the Springboks, and the first black man to lead his
country in over 128 years of South African rugby. But now, for the very first time, Siya Kolisi shares his
story in an extraordinarily intimate memoir, charting his journey from being born into the impoverished
Zwide township, to leading his proud nation to an astonishing victory at the Rugby World Cup in 2019.
However, Rise is not simply a chronology of matches played and games won; it is an exploration of a
man’s race and his faith, a masterclass in attaining a positive mindset, and an inspirational reminder
that it is possible to defy the odds, no matter how they are stacked against you. In 2020, partly in
response to the pandemic, Siya and his wife, Rachel, launched The Kolisi Foundation, providing personal
protective equipment to healthcare workers and delivering food parcels throughout South Africa. The
title Rise is inspired by Siya’s mother - Phakama - which translates to the book’s name, as well as a
celebration of his Xhosa heritage.
word of English. Having left school just a year earlier and following in the footsteps of his father, he was
eager to become a stable boy and apprentice jockey, willing to do everything it took to make it. This was
his first, but certainly not his last, leap of faith. Despite his slight size, Frankie’s impact upon the British
racing scene was immediate and significant. Brimming with confidence, charisma and personality, and
with what was clearly a precocious talent, in 1990 he became the first teenager since Lester Piggot to
win over 100 races in a single season. By 1996, Frankie was already established as a celebrity in the
sport and an adopted national treasure, but it was his extraordinary achievement of winning all seven
races in a single day at Ascot that cemented his reputation as the greatest rider of his generation. Nearly
25 years later, and having won the Longines World’s Best Jockey for three consecutive years running,
Frankie has demonstrated an unparalled level of longevity at the pinnacle of his sport. But his story is not
simply one of uninterrupted success, but also of personal anguish, recovery and restoration – both in and
out of the saddle.. Heartfelt and poignant, this is not simply a memoir, but a celebration of perseverance
and defying the odds.
Little Bird of Auschwitz
by alina & Jacques Peretti
As a reporter, Jacques Peretti has spent his life investigating important stories. But there was one story, heard in
scattered fragments throughout his childhood, that he never thought to investigate. The story of how his mother
survived Auschwitz.
In the few last months of the War, thirteen-year-old Alina Peretti, along with her mother and sister, was one of
thirteen thousand non-Jewish Poles sent to Auschwitz, in the wake of the Warsaw Uprising. Her experiences there,
which she rarely discussed, cast a shadow over the rest of her life. Now ninety, Alina has been diagnosed with
dementia. Together, mother and son begin a race against time to record her memories and preserve her family’s
story. For the first time, Alina recalls her experiences as a child during the Second World War, the horrors that she
witnessed in Auschwitz, and the miraculous story of how she survived a firing squad.
Along the way, Jacques learns long-hidden secrets about his mother’s family; his mysterious grandfather who lived
a double-life, his grandmother who read tarot cards in a Soviet labour camp, and his aunt and uncles, whose fate
he never knew. He also gains an understanding of his mother through retracing her past, learning more about the
woman who would never let him call her ‘Mum’.
Queenie’s reign comes to an end
• By Kristie Boland
TRIBUTES HAVE flooded
in for Queenie, the famous
Lyttelton cat.
Also know as Frederick, Horse,
Sausage, Smokey and The Mayor,
the iconic feline – thought to
have been about 18 – was a favourite
of people in the port.
Queenie, who died last Saturday,
frequented businesses on
London St, including pubs and
dog cafes.
Lyttelton Coffee Company
owner Stephen Mateer said
Queenie wasn’t afraid of dogs.
“We’re kind of a dog cafe, and
that cat would come in and basically
hold its own. It must have
been some sort of tough cat to
come in and mix it up with the
dogs,” Mateer said.
Civil and Naval former owner
Louis Dyer knew Queenie by
the name Horse (he was unsure
why). The cat visited the pub regularly
over the nine years Dyer
owned it.
“He just strolled in. He owned
London St as far as he was concerned.”
Queen would even have the
occasional sleepover.
“You’d lock the place up at
1am not even noticing him and
come back the next morning
at 9am, only to have him
casually stroll out the front door
FAREWELL: The footpath outside the Cassels’ home has been covered with tributes since Queenie died. The Cassels
took Queenie to his final resting place 10 days ago.
like it was a fully intentional
manoeuver,” Dyer said.
The Lyttel Kiwi owner Huia-
Rei Couch remembers Queenie
sleeping in the shop on cold
winter days.
Queenie’s owner of 14 years
Hana Cassels (or housemate,
as Cassels called it) said the cat
chose them.
“One day he just walked in and
he just never really left. It was
like . . . this is my house, I live
here now.”
Cassels later learned Queenie
had originally been called
Frederick and had belonged to a
neighbour up the road, who had
a dog Queenie disliked.
Cassels and her husband Zak
have three children, Coco, 16,
Lula-Mae, 14, and Manu, 12.
The children renamed the cat
Queenie when they were young
and the name stuck.
“He used to help discipline
our children. If one of them was
having a noisy tantrum and he
thought it was too loud he
would go up to them and sort
of bat them, a clawless bat,”
Cassels said.
The family lived a few doors up
from the main street, which soon
became Queenie’s second
home.
He had his own routine, knew
who was working on what day –
and who would feed him.
Cassels said Queenie had been
seen swiping cat biscuits off the
shelf in the supermarket, and
would regularly sit up at the bar
in the pubs.
Walking down the main street
of Lyttelton and mentioning the
name Queenie to locals resulted
in tales of an overly confident,
cheeky and sociable cat that
visited bus stops, made cars wait
for him to cross the road and
shared lunch with the kids at
school.
But Queenie wasn’t always
popular at the school, not
when he strolled into an empty
classroom a few years ago and
ate the school goldfish.
The Cassels had a funeral
for Queenie last Sunday and
buried him up in the Port Hills
overlooking Lyttelton.
“He was one in a million,”
Cassels said.
NEWS 9
Treasures from the past:
Robert and Mary Harris
ON JUNE 9, 1851, Robert and
Mary Harris, aged 41 and 39
respectively, arrived in Lyttelton
aboard the Steadfast after a
record-breaking journey from
Gravesend of just 101 days.
With them were their nine
children ranging in age from
infancy to 19 years.
Robert was listed in the
passenger list as a labourer,
and was clearly willing to turn
his hand to anything to provide
for his family, as evidenced
by this advertisement in the
Lyttelton Times on November 8,
1851:
“On sale – 10,000 well burnt
bricks. Apply to Robert Harris,
left hand side of the cemetery
ground Lyttelton.”
Robert moved his family to
Ōhinetahi/Governors Bay where
their first home was a hole cut
out of the hill with bullock skins
to shelter the opening. He laid
the cobblestones in the porch of
St Cuthbert’s Church and also
worked on the construction of
the Lyttelton rail tunnel in the
1860s.
Many settlers were granted
land as compensation for
fulfilling contracts for roading,
fencing etc; Robert got 34 acres
at the base of Omawete/Coopers
Knob, the highest peak behind
Ōhinetahi/Governors Bay. He
and Mary had another five
children there.
Elizabeth was born on
September 11, 1857. As a young
child, because her father worked
on the tunnel construction
(which was officially opened
in December 1867), she was
privileged to accompany
him through it prior to its
completion.
She sat on the front of a trolley
holding a candle in a bottle to
light the way and thus laid claim
to being the first female to travel
its length.
Later in her life, when the
tunnel was electrified in the
1920s, Eliza was a proud guest
of the government for the
celebrations.
The Harris children had a pet
bullock they raised from a calf
which they taught tricks, such as
to sit on a tree stump (looking
perfectly ridiculous); when
grown the animal refused to pass
said stump without perching on
it.
One playtime nearly ended in
disaster for Eliza as while playing
with the tail of the bullock it
turned and gored her in the
stomach. Robert stitched her
wound with a needle and thread;
his amateur doctoring proved
satisfactory as Eliza later bore
nine children.
Tragically, in 1874 Robert
was thrown from his horse on
Dyers Pass Rd and although
attended by a doctor, died five
days later.
At the time of his death most
of the children were married,
owned property and had
established themselves in lives
that would have been impossible
had Robert and Mary not made
their courageous journey to
Canterbury.
Mary spent her later years
living with family in Little River
until her death aged 90.
CONTENT MARKETING
WHETHER YOU are trying to
sell your house now or looking
ahead to a possible sale in the
years to come, maximising your
sale price is an important consideration.
If you are investing money in
repairs and renovations, you want
to be sure you will get bang for
your buck, otherwise known as
return on investment. So how do
you add value to your home in
ways that are truly meaningful to
buyers?
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Five ways to add value to your property
Upgrade your bathrooms
and kitchen
There’s an unwritten rule of real
estate that bathrooms and kitchens
are what sell houses.
However, renovations and improvements
in these spaces can be
costly, so don’t jump in without
first running the numbers, and
doing some proper planning.
Be sure to research what’s ‘on
trend’ – the last thing you want
to do is invest in an upgrade
that’s now out of style and
won’t do your house price any
favours. Interior decorators, real
estate agents, and professional
property valuers are all great
people to tap for advice on this.
Give the property a lick of
paint
Not every change you make has
to involve a large-scale overhaul
of appliances or restructure of an
entire space. Sometimes, all that’s
needed is a little TLC and refresh
to bring a tired-looking property
back to life.
Focus on areas that receive a lot
of wear and tear – interior doors
being a great example. You’d be
amazed at how a fresh coat of
white paint on old wooden doors
can help modernise a property in
the eyes of your buyers.
Rethink internal garages
Increasing the size of existing
rooms or making unlivable spaces
liveable will help grow the value
of your home. If you can declutter
Add a sleepout
Building a studio or sleepout
can add between $50,000 and
$100,000 in value to a New
Zealand property and could also
attract a larger pool of buyers.
There’s currently huge interest
Be sure you understand the
legal ramifications of adding what
is essentially a separate dwelling
onto your existing home.
Invest in outdoor living
spaces
During the Covid lockdowns,
we all learned the importance
of living close to green spaces
or having a garden of our own.
Poorly kept gardens can be a real
turn-off during open homes or
private viewings.
Become a leader at Outward Bound
OUTWARD BOUND is the
opportunity of a life time
“If you have the opportunity to
go on an Outward Bound course,
grab it,” said Julia Coppens on her
return from the 21-day leadership
programme at Outward Bound.
“It takes you out of your
comfort zone, it challenges you,
but you get to experience so many
different activities, and you get so
much out of it.”
Coppens won the
inaugural Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation Outward Bound
Scholarship last year and has
just returned from Anakiwa in
Marlborough.
For three weeks, she and her
cohort of 14 people, aged 18-26,
spent 24 hours a day together
– from tramping, sailing and
running through to bunking
down together, exhausted, at the
end of the day.
Towards the end of the course,
they went solo for three days in
the bush – a stark contrast, but a
chance to sleep and reflect.
“What really impressed me
was each activity had three
components,” Coppens said.
“Beforehand, we discussed the
challenges we would face and
learnt skills to manage our fears.
For me, the high ropes were the
hardest, but because of pre-work
we did, it was fine.
“And after completing the
activity we had time to reflect on
what we had achieved and learnt,
and then write in our journals.
“There is also a strong focus on
team work, so at the end of the
course we were a very tight group.
“We’re planning on meeting up
in 12 months to walk the Queen
Charlotte Track together,” said
Coppens.
She is training to become a
primary school teacher, and a
lot of the skills she learnt on the
course will not only apply in her
own life but will also be used with
her students.
“Sometimes opportunities
present themselves and for
various reasons we are hesitant to
grab them,” Coppens said.
“But one thing Outward
Bound teaches you is to seize
opportunities when you see them.
“I am so grateful to the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation for
providing the scholarship and to
my parents for encouraging me to
apply.”
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
chairwoman, Jane Paterson, said
the foundation was delighted
to again offer two scholarships
to Outward Bound: The 21-day
leadership programme for 18 to
26-year-olds and the adapted
programme for people with
disabilities.
“When you hear Julia’s stories
and see the photos of her amazing
experience, I’m just so pleased we
are able to offer the scholarships
again,” said Paterson.
Nothing mysterious about MU-X
I VAGUELY remember when I
first saw an MU, Isuzu’s threedoor
sport utility vehicle, first
produced in 1989.
It was in a mall car park
and when I saw its badging
– Mysterious Utility – I was
intrigued to know what company
built that vehicle.
Quite obviously it was a preowned
import from Japan, but
there was no other branding
to identify its maker. However,
a quick Google search later
identified the manufacturer and
the mystery was solved.
The Mysterious Utility, or MU
as it has become known, has
evolved through the generations,
today there is nothing
mysterious about it, it’s a genuine
mid-to-large five-door SUV that
has earned much respect in the
serious side of the market.
You see, the MU-X as it has
known today, is based on the
Isuzu D-Max utility/pick-up
platform, it has a ladder chassis,
low ratio four-wheel-drive
system and live rear axle. Just
as important is its ability to
transport seven occupants,
there are three rows of seats and
each offers acceptable levels of
comfort.
The MU-X has just undergone
a generation change, although
given the aspects above, the
concept is retained in full, it’s a
car where form meets function,
it has a pleasing design both
inside and out and yet has
go-anywhere capability, the
mechanicals biased toward
genuine off-the-seal travel.
The latest MU-X comes in
just one specification – it is high
spec and lands here at $80,990.
If you compare that to other
vehicles of similar construction,
it is priced not far from Ford’s
Everest and Nissan’s Pathfinder,
however, Toyota’s Fortuner and
Mitsubishi’s Pajero Sport sit
lower.
Nevertheless, the MU-X is
well specced with full leather
trim (heated seats up front),
electric front seat adjustment,
satellite navigation, keyless
entry and ignition and adaptive
cruise control, the latter is
part of an extensive suite of
safety packages that earns it a
five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program rating.
Under the bonnet is also a
new engine from Isuzu, it’s a
turbocharged four-cylinder
diesel that displaces 2999cc.
While its basic design would
appear similar to its predecessor,
there have been a lot of changes
to boost power and to glean
efficiencies, and bear in mind
that it’s the same unit that is
fitted to the D-Max and Mazda’s
BT-50 series.
MODERN: The interior of the MU-X is comprehensively
equipped.
ISUZU MU-X: Off-road tracks are no problem with a wading depth of 800m.
Isuzu is no stranger to building
good diesel engines, it has a huge
reputation in the heavy transport
field and that knowledge trickles
down to its light commercial
models.
Power is rated at 140kW
with a torque figure of 450Nm,
both outputs are delivered
wonderfully low at 3600rpm and
1600rpm respectively, and that’s
where experience counts, power
outputs that are delivered just
above idle are perfect. Coupled
to a six-speed automatic
transmission the engine simply
ticks over without strain, it
works the lower part of the rev
band constantly and that is what
you want in a vehicle like this.
Weighing in at almost
2.2-tonne, the MU-X is no
lightweight, so to have the
engine unstrained is best for
economy, Isuzu claiming a
combined cycle average of
8.3-litres usage per 100km.
I took the evaluation car
on a long highway run to
South Canterbury and at
100km/h it sips fuel at the rate
of 7.6l/100km, the engine is
working over just shy of the area
of maximum torque at 1500rpm,
ready to lunge if an overtake
is required. When I took the
car back to the dealership the
fuel usage readout was sitting
at 9.8l/100km (these figures
converted from a km/l readout).
• Price – Isuzu MU-X LS-T,
$80,990
• Dimensions – Length,
4850mm; width, 1870mm;
height, 1825mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
four-wheel-drive,
2999cc, 140kW, 450Nm,
six-speed automatic
• Performance – 0-100km/h,
9.7sec
• Fuel usage – 8.3l/100km
At highway speed the MU-X
cruises quietly and comfortably.
The spring and damper rates
are sensible, locating that live
rear axle is the job of multiple
links and coil springs, much
of the jiggle you get with that
design has been eliminated, it
sits controlled even over rough
ground. Thompsons Track,
inland from Rakaia, is a disgrace
in terms of ruts and holes, those
that I didn’t miss were absorbed
without in-cabin shock nor
vibration.
Interestingly, the evaluation
car had aftermarket wheels,
while the 20in diameter remains
the same as standard, the big
Maxxis tyres soaked up the
rough patches well and provided
vast feedback to the steering
wheel. On my journey heavy
rain made for treacherous
driving conditions, yet I felt at
ease in the MU-X, it steered
directly on the drenched surface.
I also had to take a shingle road
detour, so I used the consolemounted
‘terrain command’ dial
to usher in four-wheel-drive
(high ratio) to provide that extra
bit of grip on the loose surface,
in those conditions the MU-X
was stable and controlled.
Bearing in mind there is a
lot of vehicle to get through a
corner at 1.82m the MU-X is tall,
yet it doesn’t lean awkwardly and
has relative accuracy if a corner
is presented too quickly.
All factors considered the
MU-X is a capable all-rounder,
it is the family wagon that will
take adults and children deep
in the wilderness, its 235mm
ground clearance, 800mm
wading depth and 3.5-tonne tow
rating suggests that it is no show
pony, the entire vehicle is built
for purpose and it accepts all
challenges willingly.
I never explored the
MU-X’s true potential, but I
was satisfied with the run I gave
the evaluation car. I presented it
with a job that it would often be
tasked with and it did the work
admirably.
Given that its underpinnings
are designed for a working role,
its ability to provide an almost
luxurious riding experience is
the mark of clever engineering
practices.
2022 | MARKET INSIGHTS
The question that we all want answered for 2022 - where is the
property market heading? On 1 st December 2021, we saw changes to
The Government’s Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act
(CCCFA), having a major impact on our first homebuyers, now
requiring a minimum deposit of 20% on any property purchase.
After two months of continuing on with marketing campaigns &
auctions, we are still finding that buyers have the fear of missing out
in this current market. The buyers that we are seeing through our
open homes now are genuine buyers, with pre-approvals ready to
buy and determination to get a foot-hold on the property ladder.
Desirable locations such as our Coastal Suburbs are forever in hot
demand across a range of buyers. We have seen record prices take
place over the past 18 months and we see prices being stable
moving forward.
Heading into the winter months, there will be a limitation of HOMES
for sale which will increase the demand. To take full advantage of
these opportunities, talk to your coastal HOME specialist today!
