Exploring the Weird World of Fungi
It seems we are in something of a ‘mushroom moment’. Fungi and their
subterranean alliances are capturing imaginations and foragers are
rediscovering the joys of wild-foraged food.
Fungi help plants access water and nutrients while increasing their
resistance to drought and disease. They build architecture in soils, aerating
them and allowing water to gently percolate to deeper horizons. While often
maligned by gardeners, most fungi are friends, not foes.
Ecologist, photographer and author Alison Pouliot has straddled both
hemispheres for over two decades. This enables her to experience two
autumns each year and a double dose of fungi. She has interacted with
fungi and their followers in the forests of a dozen countries. In this
illustrated and interactive seminar, Alison will explore the fascinating lives
of these misunderstood organisms and will include some excerpts from her
book The Allure of Fungi and Wild Mushrooming.
Signed copies of Alison’s book will be available for purchase.
Nalini Singh
Born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand author Nalini Singh has worked as a
lawyer, a librarian, a bank temp and an English teacher, but as she says "not
necessarily in that order".
With over forty published titles translated into thirteen languages Nalini is
recognised as a leader in paranormal romance / speculative fiction with the
writing of her acclaimed Psy/Changeling and Guild Hunter series.
Her writing career kicked off in 2002 when one of her novels sold to
Silhouette. In 2006, during the time paranormal romance novels were
gaining more momentum, Nalini began her Psy / Changeling series and in
2009 the first novel in the Guild Hunter series, Angel's Blood, was released.
Both series gained huge worldwide following achieving critical acclaim.
Nalini also has written contemporary romance and in 2019 published a
stand-alone thriller set in New Zealand, giving readers both the landscape
and culture of the region. A second thriller, Quiet In her Bones was released
in 2021.
A master at the craft of world building, Nalini joins us via Zoom from her
home in New Zealand for an in-conversation style session with one of our
branch librarians that will delve into the intricate worlds she created within
her two most popular series.
It’s the 1980s, and in their small coastal town Ali and her best friend,
Jessie, are on the cusp. With ‘The Golden Book’, a journal of incantation
and risk taking as their record, they begin to chafe at the restrictions
put on them by teachers, parents, and each other. Then Jessie suffers
a devastating accident, and both their lives are forever changed.
When Ali is an adult, with a young daughter herself, the news of Jessie’s
death brings back the intensity of that summer, forcing her to reckon
with her own role in what happened to Jessie so many years ago.
As this stunning debut moves back and forth in time, and Ali’s secrets
are forced into the light, Kate Ryan asks profound questions about
responsibility and blame, and, ultimately, about love.
‘An exquisite study of the liminal space between words and acts,
and the necessary redrafting of our life stories. This is a golden book.’
MYFANWY JONES, author of Leap
‘A gorgeous evocation of the wildness of youth, and of what it takes
to find love after disaster. Kate Ryan writes from the heart.
Earthy, lovely, and profound. A beautiful, resonant book.’
A harmony of tastes
Harmony Week
Food brings us together in ways few other things can. This Harmony Day, Whitehorse Manningham Libraries is
seeking your recipes, ones that carry a story of a place, a time and maybe a person. The jam recipe your Uncle
taught you, the perfect dahl that your friend learned from her grandmother, the recipe you’ve taught your own family
or that one dish you’re asked to bring along to every gathering.
Let’s bring together our recipes, sharing them through the creation of our A HARMONY OF TASTES cookbook,
showcasing the diversity of our commuity through the foods that we love to eat.
To take part, email your recipe with optional photos of you cooking the dish or of the finished product, to
doncaster@wml.vic.gov.au using the email subject heading HARMONY RECIPE. Alternatively, collect a harmony
recipe submission form from your local branch.
Guidelines:
• Recipes should include a full list of ingredients, their quantities and a description of how the recipe should be
prepared and cooked.
• Briefly describe your recipe and share with us how it has come to be a part of your or your family’s food
history, especially if the recipe has been passed along by someone in your life.
• If a recipe is from a cookbook or website you may copy the ingredients list but the method and description of
how to prepare and cook the dish must be in your own words.
Recipe submissions will close on Wednesday 30 March. A downloadable version of A HARMONY OF TASTES will be
available at the end of April 2022.
Edible Weed Walk
What if many of the weeds in our garden were just as edible as the vegetables we tend beside them? What if some
of these free, easy-to-grow uninvited guests were so nutritionally dense that they are just about the healthiest things
you could possibly eat? What if many of them also had medical traditions dating back centuries?
Well it’s all true! And if you know which weeds to choose, they also taste great. Gastronomic adventure and free,
living pharmacy await the knowledgeable forager.
Join Adam Grubb co-author of the full colour field guide, The Weed Forager’s Handbook, for a fascinating walk on the
wild side. Walking shoes and hat/water recommended.
Upcycling with The Junk Map
With Lara Knight
If you’re interested in upcycling you’re in the right place! There is a fine line between nutty glue-all-over Pinterest
upcycling (that wastes resources that could be productively recycled), and creating something genuinely useful and
of higher value than the original materials. Lara Knight – creator of The Junk Map website – encourages thoughtful,
durable and creative reuse. It's a fun area for people of all ages to play around with. Experimenting and learning is
part of the process!
Lara Knight created The Junk Map website in 2013 as a secondhand business directory. The Junk Map now includes
stories, interviews and tips from all kinds of recyclers who like turning something old into something exceptional.
Come and hear Lara talk about her tips and experience with upcycling. Zoom invite will be emailed to registered
participants at least one hour prior to the session.
Tomato:
Know, Sow, Grow, Feast with Karen Sutherland
Karen Sutherland is an author and tomato expert and in this hybrid event (streamed online and open to a small
audience in the library), she will share her tips, tricks and tempting ways to taste this fantastic food.
The book Karen co-authored (with Janice Sutton & Penny Woodward) is regarded as the tomato bible for the
Australian climate – and it's packed with helpful advice from an experienced grower and tomato-lover.
To increase your knowledge about sowing and growing – including fertiliser, how to train your toms, and try organic
growing techniques, including self-watering beds, the book also features a comprehensive ‘pest and disease’ guide
with a troubleshooter chart and photos to help identify problems.
Karen Sutherland will be in conversation with writer and interviewer Claire Halliday (Things My Mother Taught Me &
Things My Father Taught Me).
