WELCOME / HAERE MAI
Tēnā koutou,
Through the ongoing uncertainties
of the pandemic, we believe in the
importance and power of music.
The last two years have taught us
to always be open to change – so
while disruptions will continue and
our delivery methods will need to be
flexible, this year Auckland’s Orchestra
will be keeping the music playing.
There will be something for everyone in
this year’s Premier Series, which is packed
with a vibrant collection of classical delights,
contemporary masters and breath-taking
musical experiences. Every concert offers
something special to look forward to, be
it a new work by Brooklyn-based New
Zealand composer Gemma Peacocke, an
improvisation on the elaborate Hungarian
instrument the cimbalom, or the dark
emotional thunder of Brahms’ final symphony
– to name but a few.
Our season is made possible by the
ongoing generosity of our supporters, and
we particularly thank The New Zealand
Herald and its parent company NZME. for its
longstanding support of the APO. We also
thank our core funders Auckland Council,
Creative New Zealand, Foundation North
and the Four Winds Foundation. Especially
throughout the upheaval of the past year,
their ongoing support has been invaluable.
Kia kaha,
Welcome,
At New Zealand Media and
Entertainment we are proud of our
long-standing partnership with the
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
and The New Zealand Herald
Premier Series.
Year on year, the APO showcases
exceptional performances featuring some
of the world’s leading artists alongside the
best of New Zealand’s own. We continue to
be impressed by the APO’s dedication to its
art form, and determination to keep making
music available for us all no matter what the
pandemic throws in the way.
At NZME we are focused on keeping
Kiwis in the know. This year’s series has
been carefully crafted to appeal to everyone
from long-time classical music lovers to
those listening for the first time. I’m thrilled
by the breadth of artistry awaiting us, from
the piano concertos of Grieg and Mozart to
the magical soundscapes of Debussy and
Ravel, and don’t forget the daring delights of
contemporary composers John Adams and
Thomas Adès.
We look forward to sharing a fantastic
2022 season with you all.
PROGRAMME NOTES
Niels Gade (1817-1890)
Echoes of Ossian
ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT
DURATION: c.14’
During the 19th century, Niels Gade was
one of Denmark’s two major composers (the
other was the slightly younger Carl Nielsen).
Gade was a follower of Mendelssohn – quite
literally, since in 1843 he moved from
Copenhagen to Leipzig, where Mendelssohn
was the successful director of the city’s
Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Gade had already sent the score of his
first symphony to Mendelssohn, who loved
the work and immediately scheduled it for
performance in Leipzig. Earlier, the Danish
musical decision-makers had rejected it
outright.
After Mendelssohn’s early death,
Gade was appointed his successor at
the Gewandhaus but in 1848, when war
broke out between Prussia and Denmark,
he returned to Copenhagen where he set
about building a career as a prominent and
influential musician.
Predictably, Gade’s compositions
show very clear affinities with the music
of ‘Magnificent Mendelssohn’, especially
the Mendelssohn of the 1830s and 40s,
the years that saw his musical pictures of
Scotland, such as the Hebrides Overture
and ‘Scottish’ Symphony.
Gade’s overture turns towards the
legendary background of the Gaelic
poet-warrior Ossian. It opens in a poetic vein
with a slow, misty start but soon ushers in a
noble, warrior-like theme by the trombones.
The two musical ideas are mixed,
contrasted and developed until, after a final
fortissimo presentation in full dress, the soft
opening returns, then fades into silence.
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847)
Violin Concerto
THREE MOVEMENTS, WITH THE FIRST TWO
JOINED TOGETHER:
I. Allegro molto appassionato
II. Andante – Allegro non troppo
III. Allegro molto vivace
DURATION: c.29’
In March 1845, Niels Gade, as assistant
conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus
Orchestra, was summoned at short notice
to stand in for the ailing Mendelssohn,
and conduct the very first performance of
Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor.
Since then, the work has become one of
the most popular classics of the concerto
repertory, its inspired charm and graceful
flow disguising the fact that it took its
composer all of 10 years to complete.
Yet the work seizes its audience from the
first note, with a haunting, beautifully shaped
melody that cannot wait for the usual long
orchestral opening, but dances in after only
a bar and a half. A couple of minutes later,
the strings create a broad, downward tune
that is immediately hijacked by the solo violin,
and gradually turned into a drifting, upward
movement that seems to move towards
heaven itself. Suddenly we are in the relative
major key, with a woodwind serenade of
soft, repeated notes – so gentle that we
might think we have slipped into the second
movement by mistake. But the opening
theme returns, the tempo picks up, and after
an exhilarating development and a dazzling
14 MAGNIFICENT MENDELSSOHN
cadenza, the recapitulation bounds happily to
its end.
But not quite. In a stroke of genius,
Mendelssohn lets the bassoon prolong the
note B out of the movement’s final chord, and
in a series of upward-stepping semitones,
he slides the music smoothly into the key of
C major for the famous violin ‘song’ that now
appears and opens the way to a toe-tapping
finale, in which the violin can show off to
wonderful advantage.
INTERVAL
Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)
Symphony No.8
FOUR MOVEMENTS:
I. Allegro con brio
II. Adagio
III. Allegretto grazioso
IV. Allegro ma non troppo
DURATION: c.34’
Can any symphony ever claim a more beautiful
opening than this? Breathing in gently from
the minor key, Dvořak’s cellos sing their way
through a pulsating 16-bar tune that has
Bohemian folksong written all over it and
makes its melodious way through different
velvety keys before emerging into the sunlight
of G Major.
Such untroubled music suggests
contentment on the part of the composer, and
yes, Dvořak’s situation in 1889, the year of the
symphony’s composition, could very well have
been described as one of contentment. His
music was being increasingly performed and
bringing him a fine reputation, to say nothing
of the increased royalties that allowed him to
buy a house deep in the Czech countryside,
where he could compose in tranquillity.
Growing musical fame meant greater
confidence, and Dvořak began to bend the
rules of musical composition to suit his own
particular voice and style. True, he stuck to
the general outlines of Sonata Form in major
movements, but often he allowed his themes
to come and go with a life of their own,
playing down their constructive possibilities
in favour of tuneful, folksong like phrases of
great charm.
After the warm, sunlit opening, the main
theme of this first movement is in two clear
parts: a mi-re-do assertion by divided violas
and cellos, followed by a chirpy, bird-like
decoration from the flutes, eventually melting
into the ‘proper’ second subject in the key
of the relative minor, and providing all the
material for a colourful development with
a thrilling recapitulation that blazes out its
reappearance in unison trumpets.
Second and Third movements seem to have
a close affinity with each other. Both are in
a minor key, and each has one single mood
– pastoral in the Adagio and nostalgic in the
waltz-like Allegretto grazioso.
A spirit of exultation rings out in the opening
trumpet fanfares of the finale, before the
cellos lead off with the main musical material,
just as they did in the first movement. A few
minutes in, the pace increases and all the
instruments fall over themselves to lead the
theme to its brilliant conclusion. Watch for
the enormous flute solo at the centre, and
the music’s occasional sudden dips back
into the minor key. This is Dvořak at his most
inspired, and his musical journey, despite its
momentary shadows and re-tracings, is an
untroubled one, where contentment becomes
increasingly animated and bounds to a
conclusion of high-spirited happiness.
Music is better with friends
– Join the APO Friends
The Friends of the APO are an integral part
of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
family. Founded in 1981, the Friends help
the orchestra in a variety of ways including
selling programmes at concerts and providing
suppers for guest artists and the orchestra.
Funds raised from Friends events, subscriptions
and raffles are donated to support the APO
Connecting programme. Membership to
the Friends is open to all. Annual dues are a
modest $35 per person and benefits include
newsletters, invitations to monthly Meet the
Artist mornings and, most of all, the satisfaction
of knowing that your contribution helps support
an essential element of Auckland’s cultural life.
