FRANCES WILKIE has
never protested in her life,
now after losing her job as a
primary school teacher when
the mandate came in, she is
protesting at Cranmer Square.
The anti-mandate protest at
Cranmer Square has grown in
up tents and gazebos looking
set to stay the long-haul in
support of their Wellington
“I’ve never protested in my
said.
Taxi driver’s
‘error of
judgement’
doesn’t
make him a
‘sex offender’
A JUDGE has ruled out
describing a taxi driver who
indecently assaulted a teenage
passenger as a sex offender.
Judge Jane Farish said the
man’s offending was “an error
of judgement” after six years in
the taxi industry and believed
the level of the offending – an
unwanted kiss and touching
the woman’s breast – would not
lead to him being admitted to a
programme for sex offenders.
Farish said the offending had
been “sexually driven, but his
one act doesn’t make him a sex
offender.”
The man, who is no longer a
taxi driver, was appearing for
sentence in the district court
yesterday.
The Crown had described the
indecent assault as “an issue of
public safety.”
Farish accepted the general
safety issue, saying at the sentencing:
“It is a very tragic thing in
our society that women are still
vulnerable at night, on their
own.”
She said the taxi driver had
taken advantage of a 17-year-old
woman who was “somewhat naive
and affected by alcohol.”
Farish released him on
five months’ community
detention with a nightly
curfew at home, and 12
months of supervision
with a recommendation
that he be accepted into
a Safety Planning Group,
which deals with cases
where treatment at a STOP
programme for violent
offenders is not warranted.
She also suppressed his
name because of mental
health concerns, mainly
for his wife. The couple are
immigrants who have been
in New Zealand for 14 years.
The man had worked
as a taxi driver and they
had owned a business, but
the offending has put an
end to both ventures. The
wife is worried about likely
shame and ostracism by
their community if his
name is published, and has
attempted suicide.
Farish said the wife
had also been following
the man around because
she was so worried that
he would commit suicide
because of the shame and
embarrassment.
The man was charged
with two indecent assaults
after the incident on June
28, 2019, which began when
he came across the woman
walking home and offered
her a ride. After she got in
his taxi, he turned off the
meter. Crown prosecutor
Penny Brown referred to
him turning off the GPS.
He drove to the
Barrington shopping centre
car park and followed the
woman when she got out
and walked into a park.
There he kissed her and
touched her breast over and
under her clothing.
He later brought her home
and denied that any contact
occurred when interviewed
by the police, and again
in court, even though his
DNA had been found on the
woman’s face and breast.
Farish said he had lied in his
evidence at a judge-alone
trial where she had found
the charges proved.
Brown described it as
predatory and premeditated
behaviour, and said the
Crown saw it as a public
safety issue. She said the
victim had struggled to deal
with it and had not been able
to provide a victim impact
statement for the sentencing.
Defence counsel April
Kelland said difficulty with
culture “winds around
what’s happened here”.
The couple felt the loss of
reputation and dignity
would make it feel as though
they had lost their lives.
Penalties would go “on
and on” because of social
media. She urged that name
suppression be granted.
Farish accepted that final
name suppression should
be granted, mainly because
of the wife’s mental health
issues.
She told the man: “I
don’t see you as being a
public risk at the moment. I
think you have already been
quite significantly punished
over the last two and a half
years.
“Your judgement failed
you and you have made a
very bad decision which
has had catastrophic
consequences,” she said.
Truck gutted by fire; driver escapes
• By Fiona Ellis
ROSE KERR wants bananas
kids can eat for free in
supermarkets banned.
The 66-year-old believes
the fruit is “horrendously
dangerous” when given to
children who may drop
them.
She has bruises to prove it
after slipping on a smashed
banana at Countdown in The
Palms last Thursday.
However, Countdown
does not plan to alter its
popular Free Fruit for Kids
programme.
Kerr was pushing her
shopping cart along when she
took a sudden tumble that left
her on the floor calling for
help.
“My cart went one way and
I went another, falling hard on
the ground,” Kerr said.
“I think I hit my head as
I can’t remember anything
much after my fall.”
Two staff members helped
her to her feet.
Kerr declined offers of
medical assistance but
had a sore leg for two
days afterwards.
She believed the smashed
banana had been discarded
by a child based on what staff
told her, she said.
An older person could break
their hip in a similar situation,
she said.
“I just want the bananas
out of the kids’ free fruit as
it’s dangerous [for] health and
safety.”
A Countdown spokesperson
told The Star yesterday the
duty managers would be doing
floor checks every 30 minutes
in the produce area to check
for fruit litter in addition to
standard hazard and cleaning
protocols.
“We do provide bins in the
store for fruit peel and would
remind parents to keep an eye
on their littlies when they are
enjoying the free fruit.”
Mum makes peace with son’s job
Former Burnside High
School student Tom
Mutch headed overseas
to study modern
history at Oxford
University. Now the
self-taught freelance
photojournalist
finds himself on the
frontlines of evolving
conflicts, such as in the
Ukraine. His proud, and
sometimes anxious,
mum talks to reporter
Chris Barclay
CAROL MUTCH scans her only
child’s images of a bombed-out
police station in Mariupol, then
a skull and crossbones signifying
the edge of a minefield, also in
eastern Ukraine, and rationalises
Tom’s passion.
“I understand this is the life
he’s chosen, he absolutely loves
it, he does amazing work and
I’m so proud of him but I also do
sometimes think about the
‘what ifs?’. It goes through my
mind . . . what if something goes
wrong?”
Mutch, a professor of critical
studies in education in the
University of Auckland’s faculty
of education and social work,
believes she has settled on the
FAMILY HOLIDAY: Tom Mutch and his mum Carol at Niagara Falls in 2019.
right mindset to deal with the
Christchurch-born 30-year-old
freelancer’s career choice.
He is currently in the Ukraine
documenting the conflict with
neighbouring Russia. Prior to
that assignment he was working
in Afghanistan, before and after
the Taliban took control of the
country last year. Iraq was the
last stop before Ukraine.
“If he’s in a dangerous place
I think ‘what’s the worst could
happen?’ And then I sort of put it
in a cupboard and shut the door
because I’ve got to get on with
my life. I can’t let it interfere with
my day, if that makes sense,”
Mutch explained, aware her boy
had withdrawn from a potential
firing line to the capital Kyiv.
“He’s really good in a sense
that when he is going somewhere
dangerous he will call me and
he’ll say: ‘This is what I’ve got in
place, this is the team I’m going
in with, this is what the
precautions are’.”
That policy is reassuring
given Mutch, who has been in
the Ukraine previously as a UK
parliamentary researcher on
defence and security issues, has
not yet heeded a warning from
the Foreign Minister Nanaia
Mahutu, who urged New Zealanders
in the Ukraine to leave
immediately.
Carol Mutch had an inkling
Nick – she still calls her son
by his christian name, not the
middle name he publishes
under – was bound for further
afield when he secured a place
at Oxford University in 2011
following a year at Canterbury
University.
“When he was a teenager I
knew he was going to be an
adventurer. He was interested
in world history, particularly
military history,” she said.
“I said jokingly to somebody:
‘One day I’ll look on the TV and
there will be Nick wearing a hard
hat’. I have now seen that.”
Mutch, no relation to television
journalist Jessica Mutch-McKay,
did an undergraduate degree
in history at Oxford, where he
developed an interest in writing
and photography.
He has subsequently written
for The Times and The Telegraph
in the UK, open Democracy and
Foreign Policy magazine.
“What I’m most proud of is
not that he goes into war zones
and all of that sort of thing. It’s
that he goes to tell the human
stories,” Mutch said.
Shooting at pre-school sign with
outline of children leads to fine
• By David Clarkson
PERE MATAITI’S target
practice on pre-school signs that
included the outline of children
has cost him $521.
The sign, across busy Papanui
Rd from Mataiti’s house in
Merivale, was so peppered with
pellet shots from the militarystyle
semi-automatic air rifle it
had to be replaced.
The 35-year-old has avoided
a prison term because he has
now spent seven months in
custody and nine months on
electronically monitored bail.
District court Judge Stephen
O’Driscoll released him on
intensive supervision for 15
months with special conditions
that he undergo interventions
for family harm, alcohol and
drug use, undergo psychological
treatment and counselling, and
not use alcohol or drugs.
He will also be monitored with
three-monthly reports to the
judge on his progress.
O’Driscoll ordered him to
pay $521 reparation to the preschool,
$460 for the damage to
a car’s tyres, and forfeit the air
rifle.
Mataiti had pleaded guilty to
recklessly discharging a firearm,
and he had been found guilty at
a judge-alone trial on a charge
of possession of an objectionable
publication – a 30sec clip of the
Christchurch mosque shooter
preparing to go into the mosque.
He also admitted breaching a
protection order by having the
air rifle, and by slashing the tyres
on a car.
Some of the charges arose
on September 13, 2020, after
the shooting on Papanui Rd
when the police wanted to
gather evidence from Mataiti’s
cellphone.
Mataiti shot a battery-powered
military-style fully automatic airgun
from his bedroom window
in Papanui Rd, hitting fences and
advertising signs of a pre-school.
Police found the air rifle
hidden near his bedroom.
When officers searched the
street, they found about 80
pellets. They found several
videos on his phone of him
shooting the rifle across the road
at night on September 8 and 10,
2020. It showed him targeting
the pre-school sign and firing
pellets at full-automatic setting
several times.
On one video, a cyclist travels
beneath the arc of fire, and in
another a car travels past while
Mataiti is firing.
Mataiti had claimed he had
accidentally downloaded the
mosque video but at the end
of the trial O’Driscoll ruled
that it could only have been
downloaded through his
intentional actions and he had
not deleted it during the three
months the footage was saved to
his device.
O’Driscoll said a rehabilitative
sentence was recommended.
He noted Mataiti’s efforts at
rehabilitation.
Mataiti thanked the judge
after the sentencing. He said: “I
believe it is a fair judgment. I am
dedicated to getting it done, and
getting on with my life.”
Judge
• By David Clarkson
A JUDGE has pressed on with
a pre-arranged 30-month jail
sentence in spite of a man’s
outburst in court threatening the
victims of his offending.
Damien Hart had been given
the sentencing indication in
December on a series of violence
and damage charges, and four
breaches of a protection order.
He had accepted the indication
of the jail term and was brought
from the cells into the district
court on Tuesday to have the
sentence imposed by Judge
Quentin Hix.
The session immediately turned
ugly when he spotted a man and a
women in the public seating and
began mouthing obscenities and
making throat-cutting gestures.
“Two-and-a-half years won’t last
long, mate,” he called out.
Judge Hix asked him to
“conduct yourself in a respectful
way”.
Hart carried on anyway, telling
the couple: “Wait till I get out. I
know where you live. I’ll get out in
two-and-a-half years and I’ll see
you then.”
He started calling out racial slurs
before Judge Hix had court escort
staff remove him from the court
and back to the holding cells where
the shouting continued.
Victims had spoken of physical
injuries and post-traumatic stress
in their victim impact statements,
which were not read out in court.
Judge Hix suppressed their
names but declined an application
by defence counsel Carol
Morgan to suppress Hart’s name.
He had admitted charges of
intentionally damaging two vehicles,
intentionally injuring one
person, two of assault with intent
to injure, assaults with a rock and
a chair as a weapon, and the four
protection order breaches.
The pair remained calm and
stayed in court while Hart made
his threats and after he was
taken out, they watched the
sentencing go ahead.
Judge Hix noted Hart’s behaviour
and threats and described
it in his sentencing remarks so
that it would be before the Parole
Board when Hart is eventually
considered for parole.
“I am concerned about his
behaviour in court today,” he
said. “It is my view that it is not
appropriate to depart from the
sentencing indication. The matter
of how he conducted himself
in court today can be dealt
with through other vehicles or
through the Parole Board when
the time comes.”
Joel Ineson pleaded
sentencing on April 13.
Mystery of hero’s missing grave solved
• By Chris Barclay
A DECORATED World
War 1 veteran who committed
suicide after returning home to
recover from wounds suffered at
Passchendaele was buried without
recognition, but not forgotten by
a brother in arms.
After being unable to locate
Sergeant Thomas Wilson’s resting
place in Linwood Cemetery last
week, the New Zealand Remembrance
Army, a trust devoted to
restoring war graves, has pieced
together two lives shattered by the
Great War.
“There’s two soldiers in the
grave now, not just one,” said Remembrance
Army chief executive
Simon Strombom.
Wilson and his brother-in-law,
Private Robert Moore, enlisted
on the same October day in 1917,
trained in unison at Trentham
and took the same troopship to
war, where they served in C company
of the New Zealand Rifle
Brigade.
The pair separated when Wilson
was seriously wounded at Passchendaele
on October 12, 1917,
where the death toll for New Zealand
soldiers is estimated at 957.
He had an arm amputated
and returned home before the
Armistice in November 1918;
Moore sailed for Christchurch
the following year after a lengthy
convalescence in the UK to treat
shell shock, the Western Front’s
equivalent of post traumatic stress
disorder.
As revealed in The Star last
week, Wilson, a Military Medal
recipient for gallantry in June
1917, was also blighted by mental
health issues before he hung himself
in a Moorhouse Ave property
on his birthday, on May 9, 1919.
An inquest determined Wilson
was of “unsound mind” when he
chose to end his torment.
Strombom discovered Wilson
was placed in the same plot as his
wife Minnie’s mother, Sarah Morish
Moore, who died in 1913.
Robert Moore was interred after
he died on October 1, 1960, aged
74. His name is also not recorded
on a headstone.
Strombom believes Moore, who
was discharged from the army
the day his brother-in-law died,
decided Wilson should be buried
in the family plot.
“He’s done that because of the
‘put me on top’,” he said.
“It’s a real bond of brotherhood,
they would have been through
the Somme and Passchendaele
together.”
Plans are now underway to
right Sarah Moore’s earthquaketoppled
headstone and place a
granite memorial for Wilson and
Moore to mark their service and
sacrifice.
Ideally, it will be in place in time
for this year’s Anzac Day commemoration.
Moore is included
in the cemetery’s roll of honour;
Wilson is not and the National
Army Museum Te Mata Toa has
no record of him being included
in a memorial.
“That is not to say he isn’t
on one, although given the
circumstances of his death and
that period of time, it was not
spoken of and often there was
shame or stigma attached,” said
museum research services leader
Lucy Alabaster.
Harness racing corruption allegations:
Legal argument may go to High Court
• By Chris Barclay
A LEGAL argument governing
the Racing Integrity Board’s
ability to seek prosecutions
related to the police investigation
into alleged corruption and
drug use in the harness racing
industry appears destined for the
High Court.
Some Canterbury-based
defendants charged during the
Operation Inca probe led by
the National Organised Crime
Group have sought to prevent
the transfer of evidence from
investigators to the RIB, the
industry watchdog.
Operation Inca, a covert
surveillance and undercover
operation, initially charged
13 harness racing figures in
2018 following an 18-month
investigation into race-fixing and
the supply of recreational drugs.
Judge Raoul Neave indicated
the legal argument may be
ruled on by the High Court
when updating prosecutors and
defence counsel in the district
court last Friday.
Neave acknowledged he
“parked” the argument when
revealing some charges had been
discharged.
HIGH STAKES: The Racing Integrity Board’s bid to access police information with a view
to prosecuting harness racing figures already involved in the Operation Inca investigation
appears headed to the High Court.
PHOTO: GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
The dropped counts and
those still pending are subject
to suppression orders so cannot
be detailed but on Friday three
drivers, a trio of owners and
two trainers had charges either
discharged or bids to have
charges dismissed declined.
Applications for charges to
be dismissed – some on the
grounds of insufficient evidence
– were lodged under section 147
of the Criminal Procedure Act
on May 25, 2020 so the decisionmaking
process has been
Mike
Clement
time consuming.
RIB chief
executive
Mike Clement,
a former
deputy police
commissioner,
was
philosophical
about the
prospect of the then Racing
Integrity Unit’s application to
access police files being handled
in the High Court.
“We might be in a holding
pattern waiting for those matters
to be dealt with. It’s a police
prosecution, it’s in a criminal
jurisdiction which the RIB has
no role in,” he said.
The RIU application was made
in 2018 and inherited by the
RIB when the RIU and Judicial
Control Authority for Racing
were superseded by the new
body in July last year.
The RIU did succeed in
sanctioning a then-rising
Canterbury harness racing star
in July 2020 after being able to
access police evidence.
Matt Anderson was banned for
six months by the JCA for supplying
the drug ecstasy to other
drivers and refusing to supply
information to racing investigators
about the drug deal.
Anderson had previously been
arrested by police in 2018 during
Operation Inca and subsequently
pleaded guilty to three charges
related to the possession and
supply of ecstasy.
Judge Neave discharged Anderson
without conviction before
the RIU laid its charges.
Meanwhile, Canterbury harness
racing trainer and
junior driver Cam Jones has
been charged with administering
a substance to a horse on race
day after RIB investigators completed
a stable inspection at his
training base on December 10.
Following the visit, the Jonestrained
Johnny Nevits was
scratched from that night’s
New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting
Club meeting at Addington.
Under harness racing rules
horses are not allowed to be
administered any substance on
race day.
A hearing date is yet to be set
for Jones to enter a plea.
A 31-year-old’s tale of epic weight
loss: ‘I was eating myself to death’
• By Morgan Reardon
WHEN KATIE Jones uploaded
photos of her 30th birthday
to Facebook, she captioned
the images “thirty, flirty and
thriving”, yet behind her big
smile, she was hiding a secret
from those she loved most.
Back in August 2020, the
Christchurch mum was in the
battle of her life with an eating
disorder and no one, not even
her husband Gary, knew the
dark depths her illness was taking
her to.
Jones’ struggle with food
started when she was just
five-years-old, but it was in her
late teens that she began yo-yo
dieting, bouncing from hardcore
exercise and starvation, to binge
eating and back again.
After the birth of her two sons,
Weston, now five, and Theo,
four, she ballooned to 126kg –
her heaviest weight ever. “I was
so ashamed of myself,” Jones, 31,
told Woman’s Day.
Her binge-eating disorder –
only formally recognised as a
mental disorder in 2013 – saw
her making multiple daily trips
to McDonald’s, hiding food
wrappers in her baby’s dirty
nappies and eating her kids’
lunchbox snacks.
“When I’d host a mother’s
group at my house, everyone
would bring a dish and I’d finish
off the scraps on people’s plates
when they left,” said Jones, who
realised she had to reach out for
help just weeks after emerging
from her 30th birthday sugar
coma.
“Clothes didn’t fit, I was scared
to sit in a chair in case I broke it,
I developed severe sleep apnoea
and I couldn’t run around after
my kids. I knew this illness was
going to kill me. I was eating
myself to death.”
Finally admitting what was
going on, Jones told her husband
she needed gastric sleeve surgery,
where a portion of the stomach is
removed to help a person feel full
after eating just a small amount.
“I said to him, ‘If I was dying
from anorexia, you wouldn’t
hesitate to put me in the hospital
– what I’m going through right
now is the same, just at the
opposite end of the spectrum,”
recalled Jones, who had her lifechanging
operation in November
2020.
“Some people have the view
that surgery is the easy way out,
but it’s not. The surgery doesn’t
stop me from putting anything
in my mouth – I had to make
that choice every day. I had to
prioritise exercising and eating
well.”
Instead of cutting out food
groups, Jones has learnt to fall
back in love with eating, finding
joy in cooking and recreating
recipes from TikTok. She’s also
RECOVERY: Katie Jones lost over half her body weight
and documented her journey on Instagram.
embraced exercise, regularly
lifting weights, going for power
walks and “dancing around the
house like nobody’s watching”.
Now, just over a year on, Jones
is 62kg – half of her original
weight – and while she’s incredibly
proud of her achievements,
there has been a downside.
“I try to tell myself every day,
‘My body is healthy. My body is
strong. I have two working arms
and two working legs,’ but being
so overweight and losing so many
kilos, you end up with loose skin –
and I have a lot of that.
“It’s not the end of the world
and it’s not all about looks, but
I want to love my body. I’m so
close, but I’m hidden in this
sack of skin. I can fit into a
bathing suit, but I don’t want to
wear it because I feel really selfconscious.”
Jones hopes to have one final
operation to remove the loose
skin from her arms, thighs and
stomach, but with the procedure
costing upwards of $20,000,
money is a hurdle. However, one
of her many Instagram followers
– she’s documented her weightloss
journey on @Katie.Gets.
Sleeeved – came up with the idea
of crowd-funding the surgery
via Givealittle.
“I wasn’t sure about it at first,
but then I thought, ‘Why not?’
I was always raised to believe
that if you don’t ask for what you
want, you don’t get it,” said Jones,
adding that she and her family
are doing their best to save the
money themselves.
In the meantime, she’ll continue
to share her recovery and
wants people to know that her
DMs are always open.
“As cheesy as it sounds, I want
to make a difference in the world
by using my experiences to bring
awareness to mental health and
eating disorders.
“I want people to remember
there’s more than what you
see on the surface. People are
battling things that go far deeper
than what they appear as on the
outside, so reach out if you need
help.”
on where the
protesters have gone
wrong
IF YOU’RE going to protest,
then for goodness’ sake know
what you’re doing.
The mess in Wellington can
hardly be called a protest.
New Zealand has a proud
history of protests, strikes and
demonstrations.
Whether it’s the 1951
waterfront strike, Raglan golf
course occupation led by Eva
Rickard in 1978, the 1981
South African rugby tour that
polarised opinions and New
Zealanders, the 2004 foreshore
and seabed protest or as recently
as the Ihumātao occupation.
These protests brought
thousands of New Zealanders
out onto the streets. Each time
rallying behind a single, just
cause.
I was living in Auckland at the
time of the foreshore and seabed
demonstration in Wellington.
Early in the morning Theo
and I were watching TV. Even
at that early hour, it seemed
that thousands of people were
converging on Wellington.
Responding to the call to protest,
inspired by Māori leader Tariana
Turia who insisted Maori must
have the same rights as other
New Zealanders. In this case, to
go to court to dispute ownership
of the seabed and foreshore.
I said to Theo: “This protest is
history in the making, I wish I
was there.”
“Then go,” he said. And by 12
o’clock I was in Wellington.
It is the most significant
protest I have ever taken part in.
I will never forget it. I was proud
to be there on the day.
The taxi could only take me
halfway along The Terrace.
“Bloody protesters,” the driver
complained, “causing chaos.”
Well, they would, because there
were thousands of people.
Traffic was nearly at a
standstill, Wellingtonians were
advised to avoid that part of
town.
As protesters, we were all there
for one reason, and one reason
only. To repeal the Foreshore
and Seabed Act. Nothing else.
There was no confusion. That
was the single, rallying cause.
We knew who the leaders of
the demonstration were. They
were visible. They spoke and we
listened.
All the signs and banners
proclaimed Māori wanted the
foreshore and seabed protected.
We listened attentively to the
speakers, cheered and clapped
after each one and then, just like
that, by three o’clock it was all
over. We headed home. We had
made our point.
Compare that with the current
protest in Wellington, if that’s
what you want to call it.
It seems there are multiple
issues, although stopping the
vaccination mandate does appear
to be the main concern. But
even that’s not clear, with various
groups represented.
Is there a protest leader? I’ve
watched and waited to see who’s
speaking for the protesters. Who
has the credibility and mana to
speak on their behalf?
No one, it seems, as far as I can
make out. A protest always has
articulate leaders to make sure
everyone, not only those attending
the protest but the thousands
watching and listening at home,
get the message too and understand
why the protest is taking
place; why the protesters believe
in the rightness of their cause.
I haven’t seen or heard anyone
clearly putting the case for the
protesters.
I don’t even know if they have
a leader or spokesperson.
Without one a protest lacks
credibility.
How can the public support
a protest when we don’t know
what the protest is all about?
We’re just guessing, making
assumptions and getting impatient
as the protest struggles on.
Protesting is more than a big
get-together, more than a party.
More than banners and slogans.
A protest must be meaningful.
Clearly articulated so that we can
share the struggle and feel part
of it too. It’s a call to action.
In Wellington, without a
credible leader, the protesters
appear bogged down. Just like
the quagmire they have created
in front of the Parliament
building.
Judge’s views fallen foul
After being told that a drinkdriver
was unable to pay much
weekly as reparations, Judge
David Ruth made a comment
about the driver’s “nutcase views’’.
His comment has fallen foul
of the Judicial Conduct Commissioner
and so it should. One
complainant wrote: “. . . the use
of pejorative and demeaning
language are a breach of a judges
duty.’’
This driver happened to be
part of a minority, someone who
chose not to take this particular
vaccine. I am not sure why his
health status was brought up in
relation to his bad driving decision,
unless it’s because he lost
his job due to the mandates and
thus wasn’t able “to pay much
towards his reparations.’’
I wonder if the judge would
have made the same type of
comment in relation to another
minority who also couldn’t
make large weekly payments?
Whether we are vaccinated
or unvaccinated, like wearing
masks or not, we are all human
beings and deserve to be treated
equally under the law. – D
Downward, Bryndwr
The outburst of frustration
expressed by Judge Dave Ruth
at an unvaccinated drink driver,
aligns well with the views of
New Zealand’s vaccinated, if
silent vast majority.
Commissioner Alan Ritchie
compounds a string of judgements
by castigating Judge Ruth
on the basis of only 10 complainants
who were, after all,
supporting a convicted drunk
driver? Some issues are more
important than the sanctity of
the judiciary.
Does Commissioner Ritchie
support the anti-vaxers ‘freedom’
to contract an illness with
probable long-term consequences,
or their ‘freedom’ to infect all
and sundry with same?
Does the commissioner not
understand that professional
agitators control the narrative,
and that millions of Kiwis have
no voice against the deluge of
dangerous disinformation?
I thank Judge Ruth for
expressing the majority view
so appropriately? – Harry L
Gilmore, Halswell
Gateway Bridge
As an 83-year-old who lived
through the Blitz in London,
I was extremely grateful to Sir
Keith Rodney Park and Group
11 RAF for saving us during the
Battle of Britain.
Later, having moved here, I
found out that Sir Keith was a
Kiwi.
Anyone who can survive Gallipoli
and The Blitz is a war hero
in the first order.
Naming the Gateway Bridge
after him would be an honour
worthy of this great city. – Dr
Peter Tillman
I HAVE been frustrated by the
debate on the Three Waters
Reforms focused as it has been
on the ownership of physical
infrastructure – the pipes, pump
stations and treatment plants –
instead of what needs to be done
if we are to restore “Te Mana o Te
Wai”.
If we wanted to find a starting
point that we could all agree
on, it is to restore mana to our
rivers, lakes, streams, estuaries,
harbours, and aquifers.
Unfortunately, we are debating
infrastructure without consideration
of the broader resource
management issues, including
land-use and resource consents
for taking water from and
discharging treated wastewater
and stormwater to different waterbodies.
If our focus is on restoring
mana to these waterbodies, then
they are an integral part of addressing
historic degradation as
well as improving quality.
We have seen our own headlines
about how $350 million
is not enough to improve our
rivers. But that number pales
Mayor
Lianne Dalziel
Breach of the Treaty
is a huge issue
into insignificance against the
range of historic decisions that
have ignored mātauranga Māori
and disrespected wahi tapu and
mahinga kai locations across the
country.
Since the city council amalgamated
with Banks Peninsula
District, we have started to address
the historic discharge of
treated wastewater into Lyttelton
Harbour and Akaroa Harbour.
However, the wastewater treatment
plant at Bromley sits on
land taken from Ngāi Tūāhuriri
under the Public Works Act, in
spite of that land having been
specifically reserved for them to
restore access to mahinga kai.
The restoration of the reserve was
to remedy a breach of the Treaty
and taking it away was another
breach.
This is a huge issue,
which cannot be addressed
immediately, but addressed it
must be.
So when we talk about Three
Waters Reforms, don’t start with
the pipes, let’s start with our
shared commitment to restoring
Te Mana o Te Wai.
pests from warmer climates.
All these eventualities have
to be planned and prepared for,
and Environment Canterbury
will remain in the vanguard of
these climate change efforts.
One example is the $40 million
Waimakariri River flood
protection project, completed
late last year. The network of
floodgates and stopbanks will
protect half a million people and
“super flood”.
The last major flood was in
December 1957, when parts
threatened and facing increased
Wetlands are also ecosystems
Is mobility a problem for you? Plan
your garden for access by wheelchair
GARDENING CAN be more
challenging as people age,
especially in kneeling down
and getting up, yet thoughtful
landscaping design will cater for
those with physical disabilities
or mobility limitations.
When landscaping for
accessibility, address the terrain,
texture of surfaces, walkway
width, height of garden beds
and the positioning of plants.
The ground should be flat
and even, or gently sloped
with no stairs or step down
so those in a wheelchair can
comfortably move in and out of
the house and other buildings.
While building regulations may
challenge the achievement of
this , it is possible and will make
life easier for those limited in
movement.
Aim also for the surfaces
around the property to be
even and the pathways wide
enough to be negotiated by a
person using a walking aid or
wheelchair. Consider where
trees and shrubs will be planted
so they do not hang over a
path to the point of obstructing
access, and keep paths clean
from moss and leaves.
Path surfaces should not be
so smooth that they become
slippery in wet weather. Sealed
wide piece of wood on the top
means gardening can be carried
out while sitting, though the
beds need to be narrow enough
so the middle of the garden can
be reached from the outside.
Even in the glasshouse, the
growing beds might be raised.
The floor should be level with
its surrounding ground with
no difference in height, so
there is no need to step up
means ensuring that any metal
for a wheelchair.
GARDENING 19
Take care with
coriander – it’s
tricky to grow
CORIANDER CAN be a tricky herb to
grow.
It has a tendency to bolt when it gets
too warm and goes leggy and straggly
when it gets damp.
Once you understand the art to cultivating
this aromatic herb it’s really not so
tricky to grow at all.
First of all you need to find the right
spot to plant it. Coriander prefers to be
in full sun or partial shade.
Growing it in a small pot indoors –
like on your kitchen window isn’t recommended.
For the best results try planting your
coriander seedlings in a large, deep pot
outside or a sunny, free-draining area in
your garden.
This will prevent your plants getting
damp. For the same reason, when you
water this herb it’s important to do it in
the morning, not the evening, so it can
dry off in the sun during the day.
Once your plant has got established
remember to eat it quickly. If it’s not consumed
fast enough it tends to go to seed.
Don’t eat a lot of coriander but still like
to have it on hand? Never fear, simply
stagger your planting of it. Instead of
buying several coriander plants at once,
buy a mixed herb bundle.
Two to four weeks after you planted
the first coriander, buy another mixed
herb bundle or pot and do the same.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
New solution for a better
nights sleep & improved health!
Deep regenerative sleep is so important
to feeling & performing our best. A lack
of or poor quality sleep is associated
with increased risk for many chronic
diseases, including obesity, type 2
diabetes, heart disease, depression, &
many more. Unfortunately many adults
report occasional bouts of insomnia
with one in three saying they suffer from
sleeplessness or disturbed sleep on a
more chronic basis, to the point that it
regularly impairs daytime functioning.
The good news is an inexpensive,
naturally occurring amino acid known
as glycine has been clinically researched
in Japan & shown to be highly beneficial
in supporting healthy sleep. Subjects
who were given three grams of glycine
one hour before bedtime fell asleep much
sooner, as well as exhibited brainwave
patterns associated with deep sleep
compared to control subjects who did not
supplement. On waking the subjects who
took the glycine woke reporting being
refreshed with no indication that glycine
produced a “morning hangover” or any
foggy feeling common with those who
use prescription sleeping medication.
Glycine is known to accumulate in
the pineal gland & is believed to play &
important role in “disconnecting” the
brain from the body during REM (rapid
eye movement) sleep cycles. Glycine
also supports healthy growth hormone
(GH) secretion that is associated with
strength, good health & vitality whereas
low secretion of GH is associated with
advanced ageing & increased disease.
Other clinical research has shown
glycine supplementation to improve
memory & attention in young to older
adults.
Spanish researchers have studied the
effect of glycine supplementation in
600 subjects between the ages of 4 &
85 years suffering from osteoarthritis,
osteoporosis or physical injuries.
Participants were given 5 grams of
glycine in the morning & 5 grams in
the evening. In all cases symptoms
significantly improved.
Glycine is a very safe amino acid that
appears to be highly beneficial for a
quality sleep as well as general good
health.
NOW supplements only use a natural
pharmaceutical grade, free form glycine
NIGHTS SLEEP?
Sleep is so important to feeling and performing our best. Long
term poor quality sleep is associated with many chronic diseases
and may even reduce our life span. New clinical research has
found a naturally occurring amino acid known as glycine may
restore a good night’s sleep. Japanese researchers found
patients taking glycine fell asleep much sooner and exhibited
brainwave patterns associated with deep sleep. On waking
the patients woke refreshed, clear minded and energetic.
Glycine supports:
• Restful deep sleep
• Going to sleep quickly
• Staying asleep
• Waking refreshed and clear
All Blacks role still
on Robertson’s radar
SCOTT Robertson says
he is more ready than ever
to take the All Black reins
while sounding a warning
to rival Super Rugby
teams.
In an interview with
Newstalk ZB Robertson
said he remains hell-bent
on improving his allpowerful
Crusaders unit.
The Crusaders open
their latest campaign
against the Hurricanes
in Dunedin on Saturday
night as the Covid
pandemic threatens to
rip through the rejigged
competition.
But if ever a coach is
built to deal with an evolving
crisis, it is Robertson.
The inside word on
Robertson’s Crusaders
suggests a camp which
does not involve obsessive
over-coaching and is built
around a great spirit.
And the coach himself
has given some credence to
that on the eve of the new
season.
He also revealed the
overseas club contacts
who keep him on top of
his game, and they include
two NRL rugby league
heavyweights.
The zany former All
Black loose forward has
inspired an unprecedented
title haul while creating a
cult following and an army
of fans who want him to
take over the All Blacks.
His five successive titles
followed years of disappointment
for a juggernaut
which could no longer
turn its rugby excellence
into titles.
Robertson told Newstalk
ZB’s Jason Pine that the
build-up to the 2022 season
has involved making
sure his champion squad
is “clear on how we want
to play” and getting the
returning All Blacks up to
speed on that.
“Then just go and have
some fun,” said Robertson,
a statement which is probably
a significant part of
his philosophy.
When asked how he
keeps the side at the top of
their game, Robertson said
while he was confident
about his technical ability,
it wasn’t the area where he
really thrived.
“People need to have a
clear reason why you are
there and why you love
playing,” he said.
“That’s where I back
myself as a coach.
“I get the (technical
coaching side of) game, I
played it for so long, I was
coaching through schools
and clubs.
“(But) the leadership,
ZANY: Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson
cultural … the actual inspiring
part, to do it every
year, to make the boys as
hungry, you get caught out
if you’re not hungry.
“That’s the part I love.
You have little themes,
boys get to challenge
themselves and enjoy their
days, and want to make
history.”
Great rugby coaches can
appear as stern characters.
Robertson, in keeping
with his image, said he
was not one to bawl out
players.
“It’s not my style (although)
now and again I’ll
give them a real clear understanding
that our work
ethic isn’t there,” he said.
‘You get caught out if
you’re not hungry’
– Scott Robertson
“I’ve got really good
mentors, I do a lot of personal
development stuff off
the field during the season.
“I’ve got enough time to
do it – all our coaches coach
other teams except me.
“I do the leadership
courses, do a lot of work
on tūrangawaewae stuff,
belonging, our standing,
where we come from. You
refresh that every year so it
becomes new.”
Robertson said he
closely follows rugby in
the northern hemisphere
and has great relationships
with the coaches at Saracens
and Leinster.
He has a similar link
with two NRL heavyweights,
the Melbourne
Storm who are led by Craig
Bellamy, and the Sydney
Roosters who are coached
by Trent Robertson.
“I talk to other coaches,
see what they do,” he said.
Keeping fit and pursuing
interests such as paddle
boarding and surfing were
a big part of his coaching
shtick.
“I keep myself fit and
healthy, get the exercise I
need every day, and have
family time,” he said.
“(Surfing etc) is where I
get my energy from. I still
do swimming and yoga.
“I’ve got an incredible
coaching group and they
are always finding ways to
step up and grow themselves,
which allows me to
trust them.
“They know I’m at my
best when I’ve got a clear
head, observing the group,
seeing how I can add value
to them.”
Robertson said a lot of
things needed to line up to
win titles, from luck with
injures to refereeing calls.
“But doing it five years
in a row, you get confident,
and you also want to keep
improving,” he said.
“Improvement gets me as
excited as winning. They go
besides each other.”
Meanwhile, Robertson,
overlooked following the
2019 World Cup crash,
still covets the All Blacks
coaching job.
He is contracted until
the end of 2024 but various
clauses reportedly include
an option to leave at the
end of next year.
“I’d love to lead my
country – look I’m probably
even more ready than
I was … you’d hope so
after missing out three
years ago,” he said.
But Robertson added:
“I’m coaching the best club
in the world and to coach a
club you played for is even
more inspiring.
“Do I coach another
club, or do I coach a
country? I want to keep
progressing.”
THE traditional pre-game walkthrough
plays out differently
at English Park on Saturday
mornings, where a new initiative
is encouraging football players
past their prime to still target
goals.
Aiming at the over-50s age
group, Mainland Football
launched Walking Football last
weekend, where drizzle did not
deter 20 pedestrian players from
making a tentative debut.
While the code’s game plan is
to attract and retain juniors plus
broaden its appeal to females
and ethnic groups, there is still
a position on the field for the
dodgy-kneed striker to relive
past glories over an hour.
Stan Woolliscroft, 71, cycled
from St Martins to the city’s
football headquarters in St
Albans before going through
warm-up drills and a five, six or
seven-a-side game.
A former national league
player for New Brighton and
Christchurch United in the
1970s, the mid-fielder happily
added a walkabout with his fitness
regime after discovering the
format online.
“It’s good to be back at English
Park, I haven’t been on it for a
long time” Woolliscroft said,
before venturing onto the pitch
for the first time since 1981.
Back then his game time could
be limited.
“United had (1982 World Cup
All Whites) Bobby Almond,
Steve Sumner, they had a hell
of a team. I spent most of the
season here,” he smiled, while
sitting in the stand which now
bears Sumner’s name.
Team numbers are fluid, there
is no restriction on substitutions,
no extra time or penalty
shootouts.
The offside rule is waived but
rules are enforced for games
played on a sector of a regulation-sized
field.
There’s no breaking into a run,
no headers, no studs-up twofooted
lunges, in fact no tackling
at all, with interceptions or a
poor touch the only means of
gaining possession.
And there is another twist,
though hopefully not an ankle.
“We’re aiming towards the
over-50s age group but it’s open
to anyone,” said Mainland Football
community development
officer Adam Keizer, an Englishman
from Burnley who supports
West Ham.
“In England we had people
in their 30s that played because
they’d had surgery on their
knees or something and they
couldn’t play competitive, contact
sport.”
The inaugural group’s age
range was 50 to 77, and included
three women. Just the line-up
Mainland Football hoped to start.
“The health benefits are obviously
the cardio side of things
but if you’re going for a walk,
you’re walking in a straight line
at the same time,” Keizer said.
“This is raising up the
heart rate and dropping it
up and down and there’s
agility movement, it’s balance,
coordination and flexibility as
well as your core strengths, all
key things for this age group.
“The health benefits are massive
but bigger than that in the
well-being part of it, being part
of a team, having a laugh and a
bit of banter.
“The beauty of it is you can
turn up wearing whatever you
like,” he said, pointing out a
player in jeans and hiking boots.
Jeff Waghorn was among players
wearing traditional playing
strips as he and 10 mates from
Halswell limbered up.
The sweeper started playing
football at age seven, with the
game a constant until he was
sidelined by a hip injury.
He was unable to play for two
years before a hip replacement
last March and he was relishing
the chance to make a comeback
at 65.
“I’ve been playing my whole
life, this is a great opportunity
to socialise with mates you’ve
played with for years,” he said.
“I thought I’d give this a go
now I can walk again.”
•Players keen to walk
instead of run can turn
up at English Park on
Saturday around 10am
and register to play

TRAINING PROGRAMME
weeK sIx: Taking the next step up
This week you are going to use the fitness
you have built up in the last 5 weeks. You should now
feel comfortable with the rhythm and technique of
the jogging movement and you can maintain this for
a longer period of time (this applies especially for the
beginners group). For the intermediate group there
is a bit of pace change at the Monday and Friday run.
Remember the different training intensity zones?
Zone 1, easy: this is a pace whereby you are not too
puffed and the talk test is not even a test. At this stage
this is the zone you spent most of your time in as it will
give you some initial conditioning without the risk of
soreness or muscle strain.
Zone 2, steady: this is slightly faster than easy; it can
also be called a “firm” pace. It takes a bit more effort to
Zone 3, moderately hard: this is the pace where you
need that extra breath to finish your sentence. You can
still talk and jog at the same time but it becomes more
laborious so you tend to shut up and concentrate more
on your rhythm and holding your pace.
Zone 4 and 5 are for the competitive athletes only and
do not apply to the beginners or intermediate group.
In these zones the oxygen supply does not keep up
with the oxygen demand so you get really puffed to the
extent that you cannot have a conversation. This pace
interferes with the enjoyment of what you are doing
and is not necessary if your main goal is to finish the
event rather then competing.
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and 1
session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TIP oF The weeK
Many of you will be stretching vigorously
before and/or after your training session.
You do this because others are doing it
as well. There is not much evidence that a
conventional stretching routine prevents
injury or keeps you flexible. There is no
real need for stretching unless you have
a specific problem with particular muscle
groups and you have been advised by
a physiotherapist or doctor to stretch.
The most effective form of stretching for
flexibility is yoga, but you will have to do
it on a daily basis and for a minimum of 20
minutes and for most of us it will not make
us better runners.
Popular Tiguan spearheads VW range
TO LEARN the Tiguan was
Volkswagen’s biggest selling
model in New Zealand took me
quite by surprise.
You see, I would have thought
that mantle belonged to Golf or
even the new T-Cross, but I guess
with the sport utility market
buoyant with mid-size wagons
the Tiguan would slot into the
realm of a desirable purchase.
Of course, there’s no doubt
the Golf over time would still
be Volkswagen’s biggest selling
model in New Zealand, but just
at present the Tiguan is selling in
large numbers.
Volkswagen has just released
a facelifted Tiguan and it can
only increase the affection Kiwis
have for it. Up front there is a
new grille, lights and bumper,
with similar treatment at the rear.
There’s a raft of new kit inside,
more so items unseen with extra
safety additions and the inclusion
of a new MIB-3 infotainment
system, it features app-connect
(wireless Android Auto and
wireless Apple CarPlay) allowing
you to seamlessly connect
compatible apps from your
smartphone.
In terms of mechanical difference,
not a lot has changed, there
are four models in the Tiguan
line-up, two front-wheel-drive
models with a 1.4-litre engine
and two four-wheel-drive models
with a 2-litre engine, both petrolfed
and turbocharged.
The range starts at $46,990 and
ends at $68,990. The evaluation
car was the range-topping TSi
R-Line 4WD with the 1984cc
engine. As a matter of interest, I
have had a few kilometres in the
1.4-litre model and I can report
that that engine is far from underwhelming,
it’s much the same
engine that is in the Golf and it is
a feisty little brute that punches
well above its weight. In fact,
it would be the engine I would
choose.
However, the 2-litre engine is
also rather intriguing, it comes
in a choice of two power outputs
– 132kW or 162kW. The R-Line
model gets the higher power
output, and if you add in grunty
350Nm of torque (available from
1500 to 4400rpm) it is strong and
extremely capable.
Mention must also be made
of the area where power is
developed, its peak arrives at
just 4500rpm and spreads to
6200rpm, that being the case
there is no drop off of performance,
the engine simply pulls
from nowhere and doesn’t lag
across the entire rev band.
In terms of acceleration the
Tiguan in this form will reach
100km/h from a standstill in
8.2sec, and if you are making a
highway overtake it will scamper
VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN TSI: Four models with two or four-wheel-drive options.
from 80 to 120km/h in 5.5sec.
Drive is sent through a sevenspeed
direct shift transmission,
this is my preferred gearbox, it’s
sort of a cross between a traditional
torque converter type and
continuously variable transmission.
The best way I can describe
it is that’s like a manual gearbox
with a robotised clutch, there are
only two pedals so you treat it exactly
as you would any automatic.
However, there is a Tiptronic
function (gearshift paddles) and
sport mode if you want the engine
to hold higher revolutions.
Volkswagen also rates the
high power engine with an
8.3-litre per 100km combined
cycle average. At 100km/h on the
highway the engine is turning
over at just 1800rpm registering a
healthy 5.8l/100km figure. After
a long drive and some use on
suburban streets the Tiguan’s trip
computer was showing 9l/100km.
By my reckoning these are good
results.
The Tiguan is a purposeful
family wagon. It has large car
comfort packaged into a midsize
that drives and rides with
comfort, along with presenting
the driver with an informative
driving sensation.
I took the evaluation car on
my usual mid-Canterbury run
through to Glenroy, returning
to the city via Dunsandel and
• Price – Volkswagen
Tiguan TSi R-Line 4WD,
• Dimensions – Length,
height, 1635mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder,
seven-speed automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 8.2sec
• Fuel usage – 8.3/100km
Lincoln, the Tiguan provides a
relaxing driving experience and
all those on board would find it
that way.
On the seal it glides through
the air with quiet ease and is
capable when presented with a
quick corner or two. The Tiguan
is very car-like, there is no presence
of height nor bulk, it feels
lithe and spirited.
The Tiguan in R-Line
specification rides on high quality
19in Michelin tyres and they
are certainly up for a cornering
challenge. They don’t moan under
pressure and combine to give the
driver positive information as to
what is happening in relation to
the road surface.
I took the evaluation car off the
seal and onto a clay-based track
just to get a feel for the 4Motion
four-wheel-drive network. There
ROSES
AUTO ELECTRICAL
wasn’t any elevation but a small
ford at the end of the track made
for a slippery departure, I could
feel the driveline engaging so
that wheelspin in any corner was
eliminated.
In terms of what you get for
your outlay, the Tiguan comes
very well equipped, and the controls
and functions are intuitive.
Major features include leather
trim with heated and electrically
adjustable seats, satellite navigation,
keyless entry and ignition,
radar cruise control and head-up
display.
The new infotainment system
responds quickly to input, and
pairing of devices is something
that even the old generation can
relate to. My old iPhone was
readily accepted and functionality
within the system is deep.
One of my wife’s relatives is in
the market for a new SUV. She
wouldn’t buy anything other than
a German car and was looking
at premium brands. I suggested
to her that Volkswagen has a
solid range of SUVs, small to
big – T-Cross to Touareg. It’s
something she hadn’t considered,
but she is now looking at them
closely, and certainly the price
compared to the competition is
hugely attractive.
I hope she goes with my
recommendation and buys into a
Tiguan.
All Welcome
If you have just bought your first home or
already own a property, then the answer to
this is yes. Purchasing a home is one of the
biggest investments you may make during
your lifetime.
It is, therefore, necessary to decide who
will be the benefactor/s of your property and
belongings should you suddenly pass away. To
do this, you need to create a will. A will states
who receives what in the event of your death.
According to the Public Trust, over 50%
of New Zealanders do not have a will. Young
people, aged from 25 to 39 years, who are
financially independent, feature highly in this
area, and yet they are a group more likely to
indulge in adventurous holidays and take part
in risky extreme sports. Accumulated assets of
this age group might include a bike, car, TV,
house, and furniture, along with a vast range
of electronic and digital gear.
With the arrival of a family, having a will in
place is even more essential and yet, according
to the survey taken in 2014, only 30% of 25-40
year-olds, with children, have a will in place.
A will not only legally takes care of the
property, and the monetary side of things but
can also state who will take care of children in
the event of an untimely death.
What happens if there is no will
The lack of a will can create problems
over who will benefit from the estate - this
is especially important if there are children,
de facto relationships, children from
Where there is no will, the estate goes into
throughout
‘intestacy’, which
Christchurch
means a court will appoint
an administrator, who does the same job
as an executor, to manage the estate. The
Home & Property appears every Thursday, delivered FREE
throughout Christchurch
For more information and bookings, contact Mike Fulham
Homeownership:
should you make a will?
administrator has the authority to act on
behalf of the deceased and applies to the High
Court for letters of administration (power to
administrate the estate).
The Administration Act 1969 provides a
code to be followed that ensures the estate is
administered in order of priority. (Check out
Wills at www.communitylaw.org.nz)
Save time and money
Before meeting with your lawyer, and to
help save time and money, decide in advance
how you want to distribute your will –
determine who will receive what. You can also
create a DIY will online, but if the distribution
of your property is complicated, you may
need to contact a lawyer for additional help.
For your will to be valid and legally binding
it must be signed in front of two witnesses,
who also must sign it. The witnesses are not in
any way responsible for what is in the will or
its execution.
Four steps to creating a will
1. Nominate an executor – the person who
will manage the distribution of your property.
2. Choose how you want to be buried or
cremated, and how you want your funeral
to be held, i.e. small and private, at a church,
or in a garden. Make sure family or friends
know in advance what you want to happen, as
the reading of the will may not be before the
funeral.
3. Appoint a guardian/s for your children
(if under 18) and your pets. Discuss this with
prospective guardians, so they are prepared
and understand their responsibility.
4. Decide who will receive what and how
much; this may include money, property,
and personal belongings, as well as selected
charities.
Home & Property appears every Thursday, delivered FREE
