ADAMSARTEXPOSE’
REPORTER: Adam
Artists today have a sketchbook that
was not even a thought 50 years ago.
The smartphone camera provides an
unlimited immediate opportunity to
capture any subject for reference. This
was also a possibility with the invention
of the camera in the 1800s. The camera
had various detriments for saving
subjects initially, size, limited lighting,
transference of a captured photo, and
the procedure for processing a photo
after being taken was among them.
The smartphone camera allows for
instant viewing and transfers for artists
today but, Artists still use sketchbooks
for more personal interpretation of
subjects but also have the option of a
smartphone photo to back it up.
a lasting impression of a scene or any sketchbooks were utilized on both sides
subject being sketched. When paper and often had sketches filling the whole
first became available and affordable page not just with one single sketch.
Renaissance artists who has a legacy
of over 7,000 sketchbook pages filled
with everything from studies for larger
paintings, diagrams of flying machines,
to architectural and anatomical
drawings. These demonstrated the
broad field of his genius and the variety
of his interests and skills. The drawing of
the “Vetruvian Man” demonstrated his
interest in human anatomy as well as
his scientific interests in mathematics
and physics as this drawing shows the
perfect man fitting in a circle and a
square Rembrandt was also known to
be constantly drawing and planning
which we see in the masterpieces of his
finished work today. The Renaissance
artist Michaelangelo si widely known for
in various parts of the painting as in
the sketch of the body of adam Two
centuries later. Rodin the French sculptor
who is famous for his many sculptures
primarily in bronze also did numerous
sketches as studies for the sculptures as
in the one for the “Thinker”.
Architects known for the art of designing
buildings are also known for keeping
sketchbooks of their ideas Albert Frey,
the Swiss architect settled in Palm
his drawings paintings and sculptures.
His painting of the “Creation of Adam”
on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel
in Rome was preceded by numerous
sketch studies of the anatomy of figures
Springs after establishing his reputation
as a modernist designer in New York. His
architectural designs are among the
most influential designs in Palm Springs
architecture. A drawing of his exterior
plan for the house now called the Frey
House which was his personal home in
Palm Springs is shown here.
Technology through the smartphone
has provided new methods for artists to
save visuals for reference however, the
traditional sketchbook drawings provide
the opportunity for the artist to develop
his or her drawing skills and to increase
their power of observation that provides
them the opportunity to show their
individual style and creativity. Douglas
Simonson, who is extensively known for his
drawings of the male physique works with
pencil and colored pencil to capture the
anatomical movement of his models as
in this sketch of a back view of a model a
quick sketch that becomes a permanent
work of art.
The smartphone has
become a permanent
tool for the artist but the
sketchbook is still primary in
developing personal artistic
creativity.
