Editorial
The Rich Get Richer and the Poor
Stay Poor…and How to Change It!
MASTER
TOBY MILROY
is a 5th degree
black belt. Known
as “The Master
Systemizer,”
Master Toby Milroy
has positively
influenced more
martial arts schools
than anyone in our
industry. He has
built a successful
multi-school
organization,
lead the national
trade association
for the martial
arts industry, and
coached some of
the most successful
martial arts school
operators in the
world.
➽There has never been a better time in our
history to be a martial arts school owner.
What used to cost thousands of dollars, even tens of
thousands of dollars, in television ads, newspaper ads,
and radio spots, we can now accomplish with the click of a
mouse and a few pennies.
The U.S. economy is on a historical winning streak,
the stock market is at all-time highs, and unemployment
is at 50-year lows as we live in the most abundant
society in history. We have virtually unlimited
access to information right at our
fingertips, through our iPhones,
through Facebook, Google, and
so on.
However, this opportunity
is also disruptive, competition
is fierce, technology is moving
at light speed and, sometimes,
it can be overwhelming to keep
up with it all. Far too many of
my fellow school owners are being
left behind, and are unable to
leverage these new innovations.
Don’t let your school get crushed
by the lower-quality school down the
street just because they understand
these new media strategies and you
don’t – it truly is survival of the
fittest!
For example, look at what happened to
the tech leaders like Motorola and Nokia:
They dominated their market, but died almost
overnight because they didn’t innovate
and change with the times.
The same is true in our martial arts industry; if we
don’t innovate and change with the times, we will die
just like Nokia or Motorola. And we’re seeing this happen
in real time: Even though the economy is booming,
the martial arts school industry is shrinking. Over the
past four years, more than 7,000 schools have closed
their doors!
Over the last ten years, the population of the core martial
arts styles like Taekwondo and Karate has decreased
by more than half (ten million to five million), while at
the same time, yoga has exploded from less than three
million practitioners to more than 26 million practitioners
over the same period!
Not to mention the mass exodus of adults from our
traditional schools leaving many owners unable to find
the next generation of staff and instructors.
Now, many of our clients and colleagues are setting alltime
records, and are doing incredibly well in their
schools, but there are far too many schools
that are suffering and on the brink of financial
disaster . . . and I’m sick watching so
many of my colleagues struggle, or not
reach the potential they deserve, so I’m
going to do something about it.
That’s why we’re so excited about –
and spending so much time and energy
– bringing you the 2019 Martial Arts
Business Think Tank!
At this never-before-seen-in-ourindustry
event, you’ll benefit from three
exciting events in one:
1. The Think Tank Sessions, where
you’ll hear from some of the most successful
martial arts business leaders in the world.
2. The Think Tank Contest, where school
owners just like you will be presenting their best
systems and strategies for the energizing the
classroom and maximizing the business.
3. The Think Tank Hall of Honors Celebration,
where we’ll gather to celebrate and honor
those contributors to our wonderful profession.
If we all come together, work together, and take
advantage of these technological innovations, I’m certain
we can rebuild the martial arts industry and make it more
impactful than yoga, the fitness industry – even the NFL!
So please accept my personal invitation for you and
your staff to attend the 2019 Martial Arts Business Think
Tank, and I look forward to seeing you there!
Teamwork
The 4 Steps to Being an
Effective Public Speaker
HANSHI
DAVE KOVAR
is an 8th degree
black belt and
recognized as the
“Trainer of Trainers.”
Hanshi Dave Kovar
is an internationally
acclaimed instructor
with black belt
degrees in ten
different martial
arts styles. His
systems have been
implemented in
hundreds of schools
around the U.S.
➽In any occupation where you are teaching
or training in front of students, public speaking
is an important tool you will use on a daily
basis. Your public speaking can make or break
the impact of what you teach. To be a complete
and effective instructor, one must know what it
takes to be an effective speaker during class.
Below are a few tips to improve your public
speaking for classes:
1. Pay attention to your timing. We can sometimes
talk too fast when we’re nervous, but by pausing and giving
time for each lesson, the instructor gives time for an
idea to sink in, and their students will remember easier.
2. Avoid those “non-words.” Some people fill the
silent spaces in their speech with non-words such
as, “uh,” “um,” “‘ya know,” “okay?” and “well.” Using
qualifiers such as “sort of,” “like,” and “basically” is
similar. Try to avoid these when you speak.
3. Use plain jargon or common classroom language.
Jargon is okay for groups that use the same
language. Otherwise, don’t use it. Avoid using big
words for simple concepts.
4. Speak from the heart. Allow your controlled
emotion to come through in your tone of voice.
Don’t try to hide your real self. Your voice will
sound more natural and animated when you let
your natural enthusiasm show. Avoid reading from
a preplanned script unless you can make it sound
fresh and spontaneous.
Achieving successful public speaking habits takes
practice, practice, practice. The more comfortable you are
in front of students, parents, etc., the more relaxed and
experienced you will be with speaking to others. And, of
course, remember to listen thoughtfully. Make sure you
genuinely address the subjects they request and answer
their direct needs.
INDUSTRY INSIGHTS
5th Degree Taekwondo Black Belt Mike
Moh Is Bruce Lee in Tarantino’s Latest Film.
A 35-year-old martial arts school owner and actor from
Waunakee, Wisconsin is fulfilling his dream of being Bruce
Lee, thanks to film director Quentin Tarantino. Mike Moh,
who plays Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (which
premiered in the U.S. on July 26), tells The Hollywood
Reporter that he grew up idolizing Lee after watching
Enter the Dragon at age 12, which inspired him to practice
Taekwondo. He says, “As a kid growing up in suburban
Minnesota I was one of the only Asian kids, so I was the
class clown and a big part of that was me wanting to fit in.
Then I saw Bruce Lee and I was like, ‘Wow, this guy can
kick ass, the girls want him, he is super-strong and -confident.’
I hadn’t seen someone like that before.”
In preparation for the role, THR reports that Moh
worked with fight choreographer Robert Alonzo to learn
and perfect Lee’s own style of Jeet Kune Do and, when
not rehearsing, would listen to Lee’s interviews to emulate
the icon’s voice. Although Moh holds several Taekwondo
world championship titles, and owns and is chief instructor
at Moh’s Martial Arts in Wisconsin, he says his wife
Richelle Kondratowicz-Moh convinced him to audition for
the role—and she knows what she’s talking about: She
actually outranks Moh, whom she met when they were
children practicing at the same dojang.
Despite starring alongside A-list actors in one of the
most highly anticipated films of the year, Moh still practices
Tae kwon do with his wife and their three young
children at Moh’s Martial Arts.
I Started Practicing Martial Arts at Age
65—and Won Seven Medals at 72
by Robert W. McGee
Why did I start at such a
late age?
When I moved to Fayetteville,
N.C. in 2012 at
the age of 65, I looked for
a gym where I could do
some weight training, like
I had been doing in Miami.
I couldn’t find a good gym
that was conveniently located,
but I did see a sign for
ATA Black Belt Academy in
a shopping center. I stopped
in, interviewed, and they
gave me a month of free lessons.
At the end of 30 days
I had to decide whether to
continue. The exercise was
helping me get in better
shape, so I joined. In other
words, I wanted to stay in
shape, I couldn’t find a gym
with weights, so I gave
Taekwondo a try. During the
1980s, I studied Shukokai
with Shigeru Kimura in New
Jersey, but got too busy
and stopped training in late
1986. I made it to purple belt
in that style. When I started
at the ATA in 2012, I started
over as a white belt.
Challenges I faced.
The main challenge I faced was my own 65-year-old
body, which was getting older every year. When I started
at 65, it was painful to tie my shoes. I had been suffering
from back pain since 1965, when I had a weight lifting
accident that caused my L3 to slip out of place. All the
stretching I’ve been doing really helps; now I seldom
have any back pain when tying my shoes. I have also
lost weight. Another challenge I face is that I can’t do
many of the things the younger guys can do. My kicks
aren’t as high, and I am unable to do some of the fancy
moves. Butterfly kicks are out of the question. Also, once
I started competing in tournaments everyone I competed
against was younger than me.
I still face that challenge in the
North American Sports Karate
Association circuit, where the
oldest age group is 60+. That
was also the situation in the
ATA circuit until May 2018 when
the ATA created a 70+ age ring.
Yet another challenge I deal
with in the NASKA circuit is that
just about everyone in my ring
(60+) has substantially more experience
than me. I have been
training for just seven years.
Some of the people in my
NASKA ring have been training
since they were teenagers.
Practically everyone is at least
a fifth degree black belt, and I
have been in a ring with eighth,
ninth, and tenth degree black
belts—I am only a third degree.
The playing field is more level
in the ATA circuit. I have never
had to compete against anyone
higher than a fifth degree,
and seldom have to compete
against a fourth or fifth degree.
What I’ve accomplished since.
Robert W. McGee poses with six of his medals.
In 2017, the World Organization
of Martial Arts Athletes
World Championship was held in Dublin, Ireland. I won
gold in Chinese Forms, Korean Forms, and Musical
Forms. I also won a silver medal in Tai Chi at the age
of 70. That year I also won the NASKA World Championship
in sparring in the 50+ (

Women Across the World Are Using
Ancient Martial Arts to Empower &
Protect Themselves
In much of Egypt and the Philippines, life for women
isn’t easy. A 2017 survey by U.N. Women and Promundo
revealed that nearly 60% of Egyptian women have been
sexually harassed, while a Reuters poll named Cairo “the
most dangerous megacity in the world for women based
on lack of protection from sexual violence, harmful cultural
practices, and poor access to healthcare and finance.”
Meanwhile, the Philippines has an extensive history
of practicing self-defense. Natives developed fighting
techniques, now known as Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), to
ward off attackers from local tribes and foreign invaders
from Spain, the United States, and Japan. The tradition of
FMA has inspired two U.S.-based Filipino women to open
women’s FMA schools.
This comes at time when more and more women across
the world are taking safety into their own hands.
In a recent report, Reuters showcased the Indonesian
Cultural Centre in Cairo, where 1,200 Egyptian women
train weekly in the martial arts, using an ancient
Indonesian style called Pencak Silat. Pencak
Silat combines a performative style (Pencak)
with self-defense (Silat). The style, which traces
its roots back to the sixth century, in what is
largely modern-day Indonesia, Malaysia, and
Singapore, incorporates several martial arts
styles and techniques like Indian grappling,
Hindu and Arabian weaponry, Nepalese music,
and Siamese costumes. It also focuses on fullbody
combat. While the Indonesian Cultural
Centre provides classes for all ages and genders,
Pencak Silat has become most popular
with girls and young women who train mainly
to learn self-defense against sexual predators
on the streets of Cairo. Now, Egypt is imposing
harsher punishments against sexual violence
amid public outcry.
In the U.S., FMA is picking up speed with
popular women’s classes on both coasts.
Although different styles comprise FMA, they
include both tactical and unarmed techniques.
In Jamie Yancovitz’ Los Angeles classes, she
emphasizes both self-defense and boundary
setting to women and girls of all ages, empowering
them to assert themselves in uncomfortable
and potentially dangerous situations. Yancovitz, a Pekiti
Tirsia Kali instructor, was inspired to open her Survival
Arts Academy in Bacolod City, Philippines as a result of
attacks on women riding public transport, before opening
her school in L.A.
In New York City, Guro Kristen Cabildo trains students
in her own backyard—literally. Cabildo has not only a
clinical background in social work and 18 years of martial
arts training, but she has even trained under Grandmaster
Dan Inosanto. She uses her extensive knowledge of Kali,
Sayoc Kali, Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
to instruct the women in her outdoor self-defense classes
and workshops. Cabildo emphasizes Filipino culture in
her classes, which include educational discussions on the
history of the Philippines and a Filipino meal. Cabildo tells
Bustle, “It’s given me an opportunity to be proud of being
Filipino and to have tools at my disposal if I’m in a physical
situation where I could defend myself.”
Improvements to Google My Business
Do you already have a profile on Google
My Business? If not, we recommend you
consider it. More likely, Google set up the
profile for you, but if you haven’t “claimed
it,” there is just generic information there.
You have the ability to make it much more
accurate and attractive by punching it up
with some exciting new features, like:
••
Company Logo. You can add your
logo to your profile for branding.
••
Cover Photo. You can add a banner
photo for the top of your profile.
••
Photo Carousel. You can add a group
of photos to represent the value of
your classes to prospective students.
••
Welcome Offers. You can make a welcome offer (when they opt in to following your school) like a free week of
classes.
When prospective students search Google for “martial arts schools near me,” make your school look as enticing as
possible to stand out from the other schools. Take advantage of these updated features, because the top schools in
your area certainly will.
Shopping Data
Now Available in
Google Ads
The Landing Pages report
in Google Ads now includes
the data generated by your
Shopping Campaigns. You can
compare gross conversions and
conversion rates of different
landing pages on your website
to see which are performing
better and which are not. Obviously,
you want to analyze why
you think one page is doing better than the other and
adjust the weaker page to be more like the stronger page.
In addition, if you check your statistics regularly (and you
should), and one page suddenly drops in efficiency, you
have a pretty good idea that something on the page has
broken and needs to be fixed.
Facebook
Removing Certain
Information
Facebook has announced that as
of August 1, 2019, business pages
will no longer have sections for
Mission, Company Overview, Biography,
Affiliation, and Personal
Interests. If you have a personal
page, it won’t be affected.
What should you do about it? Any
information that you feel is important to
your followers and prospective followers should be added
to your Page Description. It should be an easy rewrite to
include that information in your description. If you haven’t
realized it, well, it’s already happened; and if you were
unaware that the information was gone, you are now, and
you know what to do about it. You’ve got to be on your
toes with Facebook—they’re always on the move.
Point MMA and the
INDUSTRY INNOVATIONS
Krazy Martial Athletic Challenge
Point MMA has been extremely successful in using the
principles of the martial arts to empower youth to avoid
abuse, bullying, drug dealing, gang wars, addiction, homelessness,
incarceration, and obesity. Master Willie “The
BAM” Johnson inspires kids to have the character traits to
avoid these behaviors and actions that lead to health and
safety issues. The program is designed to be a lifestyle
change through a skillset that builds the foundation of
good character. It uses the martial arts to build fitness,
mental toughness, a healthy lifestyle, and athleticism.
Point MMA’s Krazy Martial Athletic Challenge is a movement
that goes beyond the dojo, gym, or school. Kids do a
series of five exercises in competition to see who can do
the most, with the total of all five as the score. The training
is intense, as is the competition.
You can join the movement and become a Point MMA
school. They offer instructor certification, including online
courses. With low start-up fees and low monthly licensing
fees, it can be a great business within your business. Visit
ATLAS Martial Arts Software has many amazing tools to
help you run your school more profitably and more professionally.
One that is particularly useful to school owners
is the Enrollment Pipeline. You can see at a glance where
The insightful ATLAS "Enrollment Pipeline"
helps you convert more leads to enrolled students.
your school is healthy and where it is weak, helping you
diagnose not only what is happening today, but also what
is likely to happen in the near future.
The raw data, when combined with our Advisor files,
help you decide if you are getting enough prospects to
fuel your growth, if you are converting enough of those
prospects into trial courses, if enough of those trial courses
are actually enrolling in long term courses, and if you are
getting a sufficient number of upgrades into your higherlevel
courses. Armed with this data, you can pinpoint
where you and your staff need help and better training.
The Advisor files then go the extra mile by giving you
advice on how to improve your results: How to find more
prospective students; how to improve your telephone presentation
and sales presentation to enroll more students;
and how to develop an upgrade program of higher-level
Can
Martial Arts
Cure Cancer?
30 MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4

Book Review
Grandmaster Young Ahn Kwon has written a
book entitled 108 years: A Korean Way of Health
in which he and his co-author describe how a
medical doctor was cured of cancer following
Grandmaster Kwon’s teachings.
So can the martial arts cure cancer?
“I have a student who was a 69 or 70 year old doctor. He said, ‘I
have to miss class . . . I have a doctor’s appointment.’
“I said, ‘You are a doctor . . . you have a doctor’s
appointment?’
“The next day he came to class and told me his
cancer doctor said he had a 40% chance of living
only 1 to 2 more years.
“I told him, ‘Follow your doctor, but I will
give you exercises, what to eat, and I will give
you homework.’
“After about 6 to 8 months, he had a
check-up and he was cancer free. He said
that I saved his life.”
Now, just in case you are suspicious
of people who make amazing
claims without hearing the other
side of the story, here is what that
doctor said:
“I learned of his [Grandmaster
Kwon’s] skill through
my own misfortune when in
2014 I was diagnosed with
cancer.
“While I was undergoing conventional
treatment for the disease, Kwan
Jang Nim took a compassionate interest in my case and
offered his services. After a long and detailed interview, which
involved painstakingly looking up all of the relevant medical terms
in a dictionary, he gave me his recommendation, which I took to
heart.
“I was to do a 9-week purifying and rejuvenating diet along with
incorporating several daily physical practices of self-massage and exercise.
From a conventional Western medical point of view,
my prognosis was serious. I had less than a 40%
chance I would survive even two years.
As a trained physician myself,
I chose to undergo the conventional
treatments I know
and trust, but also followed
Kwan Jang Nim’s regimen.
“I am now cancer-free.”
Grandmaster Kwon has
included this regimen in his book
108 Years: A Korean Way of Health.
The regimen includes a nine week
cleansing and rejuvenating diet, where
you eat different colored foods for specific
periods: The first three weeks you
eat purple foods to cleanse the body; the
second three weeks you eat yellow foods to
break down the fat and release toxins; and
the final three weeks you eat red foods (with
some blue and green foods) to restore energy.
Grandmaster Kwon not only recommends this
regimen, he follows it himself twice a year to
maintain his robust health at age 70.
As far as exercise, he emphasizes that we need
to exercise our whole bodies. He says that the human
body has over 680 muscles, yet most people use only 25
MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4 31

Book Review
to 30% of their muscles
because they move the
same way every day.
Muscles that don’t
exercise get weak and
block the flow of energy.
For example, walking
is a good exercise, but it
exercises only a limited
number of muscles.
Simple adaptations like
walking backwards or
walking sideways can
increase the number of
muscles used during the
exercise. He points out
the principle of um and
yang (the Korean terms
for the Chinese yin and
yang), where we need
to exercise not only our
front muscles (the ones
we can see), but our side
and back muscles, too.
Stretching is a great
way to reconnect the
muscles to each other.
The organs are also connected,
but we don’t see
the internal organs. Health comes from the inside, out, so we need to
make our internal organs healthy to keep our bodies healthy.
The book contains a series of morning exercises to perform
before getting out of bed, and some evening exercises to prepare for
a restful night’s sleep, both of which include tapping, slapping, and
massaging every inch of your body.
One of the more interesting aspects of Grandmaster Kwon’s philosophy
is the concept of gratitude: He asks, “Have you ever thanked
your heart?” Most people have not. He points out that people sleep
6 to 8 hours a day, but their hearts never sleep. They work
24 hours a day. Your heart and all your internal organs
deserve some gratitude and consideration.
Of course, he also recommends martial arts training
as a whole body exercise, but not the way many schools
teach them. He has a healthy balance of 50% children and
50% adults in his school, with a family emphasis. He says,
“Arts like time. Sports don’t like time. When you get old,
you can no longer compete.” So he emphasizes the art more
than the sport in his school. He even offers an art he calls
Hokwondo specifically designed for older students. It
takes the needs and abilities of older students into account
to provide not only practical self-defense training, but
healthy, whole body exercise.
As far a managing his school, he has been a member of
AMS for over 25 years. He feels that using a professional
billing company makes management easy – once a month
he gets a statement and lets the professionals take care
of his people. This management philosophy seems to
be right in line with his “reduce stress to live longer
and happier” philosophy of life and health.
So can the martial arts cure cancer?
Grandmaster Kwon and Dr. Sparks are pretty clear
that it helped in at least one case. Of course there were
dietary and other exercise components in addition
to the standard medical procedures, but for someone
who had only a 40% chance to live two more years
according to the standard medical procedures, to be
totally cancer free in 8 months and still “alive and
kicking” 5 years later provides some pretty strong
evidence. Master Kwon’s methods may not be the
silver bullet that kills all cancers, but considering the
cost, it is certainly worth a try. We look forward to
more research and future evidence before we draw any
definite conclusions, but until then, eating healthy
and practicing the martial arts seems like an inexpensive
insurance policy.
Is Taekwondo
in Crisis?
Grandmaster Jun Lee chats with MAW News
about fixing Taekwondo and how THINK TANK is
the event to change the industry as we know it.
MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4 37

Cover Story
MAW: Grandmaster Lee, you’ve been
a prominent figure in the martial arts
industry since the early eighties. Just a quick
synopsis of your background, and I’d love
if you could expand on this as well. You
immigrated to the United States in 1982 and
have a degree in economics, along with what
you’ve accomplished in the martial arts industry:
You’re the founder and president of
Black Belt World, a ninth degree Kukkiwon
certified black belt, and you’ve done a lot of
work in your martial arts schools in developing
very deep roots in your community.
You’ve also been a key figure in the USTC
in focusing on what’s next for the organization,
what’s next for Taekwondo, and for
Olympic Taekwondo. Could you give me
a quick background of your martial arts
lineage and how you got started here in the
United States running martial arts schools?
JL: I was born in South Korea and I came
to the USA in 1982 as a student, and I went
to George Mason University. Actually, I got
accepted into George Washington University
and George Mason University, but I
decided to go to state university because it
was closer to my older brother who had a
dojang near the university, so I was able to
work there and also continue my education
at the university. Initially, my purpose was
to continue my studies, but after I came
to the USA, I saw the possibilities and so
much potential in becoming a professional
Taekwondo instruction master. After I had
been here for two years I decided to commit
my life to being a full-time Taekwondo instructor.
Ever since then, this has been my
life and this is the best thing that I can do.
I have a dojang in Raleigh, North
Carolina, and I have six brothers teaching
Taekwondo in different places. I do have
the largest family of Taekwondo masters
teaching and running professional
Taekwondo schools all over. I have a ninth
Kukkiwon certification, and currently I’m
working with the United States Taekwondo
Committee as a secretary general for the
organization. I do have a concern that the
traditional Taekwondo martial arts values
are fading away from society, and my goal
is to preserve them and to keep them on our
training floor. That’s what I’m specifically
working on with the USTC; the main goal is
that we bring back those lost values.
MAW: Can you define what you mean?
We all know that in Olympic martial arts,
we have three opportunities, really, when
it comes to Olympic competition: We have
Judo, which has faded pretty radically,
Karate, like traditional Karate, and then
Taekwondo. Especially over that last couple
of years, there’s been a relatively dramatic
shift in how the sport of Taekwondo in
the Olympics is going to be competed, and
judged, and things like that; that’s been controversial
on both sides, but let’s drill into
that. What part of the value system are you
concerned about, and what do you believe
are the really important things to focus on,
and where do you think we’re heading with
all that?
JL: In the modern day, when you come to
the Taekwondo martial arts center, many
people are coming in to find the profound
meaning behind [Taekwondo]. When they
come in they want to see the proper attitude,
people sweating and just trying hard to
improve their energy, both their physical
energy and mental capacity. Being in the
Olympics, I’m not even sure whether it’s a
good idea or not that it’s in the Olympics, as
a Taekwondo practitioner. For example, in
sport Taekwondo, the athletes are willing
to switch their coach any time they want,
unless the coach is providing the adequate
coaching and instruction. So, basically, in
the sporting community [the athletes] are
Grandmaster Jun Lee has built a highly successful mult-school organization.
Cover Story
Grandmaster Jun Lee understands the importance of an inviting lobby. Pictured here is the Black Belt World headquarters front desk.
hopping around finding another coach.
[We’re] losing the traditional values
in the sporting Taekwondo population;
they don’t even wear traditional uniforms
anymore when they are training, and they
are basically wearing t-shirts and they have
shoes on the floor; and when they see the
instructor/master, they say “yeah” instead
of “Sir”—no more tradition and no more respect.
The ranking system is not important
to them at all. For example, the low-ranking
students can actually perform the higherranking
poomsae in their sporting competitions.
Again, the values that we’ve had for
centuries are now totally destroyed because
of sport Taekwondo.
MAW: Some people will look at some of
the pieces of tradition that you described—
bowing on and off the floor, bowing to the
instructors, traditional uniforms, “yes,
Sir, yes, Ma’am”—a solid rank system,
those types of things—some people argue
that those pieces of culture of an organization
are really only designed to empower
the master to feel like they are the king of
the world, and that everything must flow
through me, and I am in charge, therefore
you must bow to me, right? Some people
would argue that those mechanisms are
designed for that purpose.
I would argue, as I think you are, that
the level of discipline, the level of culture
regardless of which culture, in the martial
arts school is critical to the outcome that
we want for our students. I’ve done a ton of
research and studied with some of the most
prominent leadership universities, leadership
development agencies in the world:
Harvard University, West Point, Naval
Academy, Air Force Academy, etcetera, and
when you look at developing what West
Point calls “leaders of character,” what it
takes to do that, all of those little pieces of
culture that you’re describing are critically
important to the outcome. One of the reasons
is that in everyday life, we walk around
and we’re regular human beings; we don’t
show that level of discipline and we don’t
show that level of respect—especially children.
We’re just sort of the workaday life.
Well, when they come to the dojang, when
they come to train, it has to be different.
The culture has to be something more so
that they can get the benefit of this radical
difference in outcomes and expectations
that we have for them.
It’s the reason that they shave everybody’s
head in the military. It’s the reason
that you wear a uniform and you have
uniform inspections becoming an officer.
It’s those little pieces of detail that really
make it all worthwhile. So, how would you
respond to that? How would you respond
to somebody that thinks maybe all of this
culture, ego stuff is really a problem, and
why shouldn’t they be able to wear t-shirts?
How would you respond to that?
JL: One of the main purposes of training
martial arts, Taekwondo is not only for you,
but also for society and the community as
well. We’re trying to benefit all, not only
yourself, but also everybody. We are social
animals and we are connected with everything
around us, and that’s the one thing.
Another thing is that what’s been handed
down for centuries from the teacher to the
student, and from generation to generation,
the values have been [passed] down
that we knew were there, all of a sudden are
not there anymore. Especially ethics and
morality, those are not something that we
can really make happen, but this is what’s
desirable for the human society and what’s
desirable for the human life. When someone
is bowing to you, and when you say “yes, Sir”
or “yes, Ma’am” to somebody, when you are
showing respect to your own teacher, that’s
the way you are making other people happy.
In the Korean, and especially Eastern
society, we are influenced by the Confucius
teachings; and that’s part of the—it’s not
religion—but it’s part of the culture that has
been handed down for centuries. The Confucius
teachings really emphasize education,
and ethics, and morality: Respecting older
people, and loving the junior members that
are not only in the family, but also in the
society in general, and also in our martial
arts community; senior and junior relationships,
teacher and student relationships, the
respect must be there.
Also, it used to be a definition for martial
Cover Story
arts was skills to fight—that was the formal
definition of martial arts, was skills to fight.
The modern-day martial arts definition is
the skills to survive. When I say survive, I
mean not only for surviving in fighting and
self-defense situations, but also surviving
in everyday life situations. That’s another
thing we are facing with the martial arts
values actually evolving as time goes by. So,
we kept the values for many, many centuries,
but all of a sudden with the freedom of
speech, and freethinking, and the trying to
destroy the good deeds in the martial arts,
we are the ones who need to preserve that.
For example, your own children, if you don’t
do anything, the modern media influences
them, their friends influence them, and unless
we set guidelines, they will go anywhere.
But that’s something that we do: We are the
fathers and mothers in the family, within
our industry also, and we are making sure
we guide our people into the right direction.
That’s what has to be done nowadays. Not
only have we had this kind of tradition for
centuries, but also this is the world that is
desirable for humans because we know how
to distinguish between good and bad.
So, we are trying to continue what is good
for the human society, to make a happy
Earth, and that’s the one thing that we have
to continue as a martial arts teaching. That’s
the reason why the ethics and the values are
very, very important. We’re talking about
respect, discipline, hard work, integrity,
self-control, especially when you are dealing
with the fighting skills and the traditional
concepts. Unless you have a kind of sideline
guidance, this will become very dangerous
to teach and we want to make sure we are
benefiting the entire human society, instead
of only getting into the fighting skills.
Again, due to the nature of the art that we
are practicing and that we are part of, we
must understand that we are dealing with
other people and other societies and, therefore,
we have to find a way to contribute to
the community that we belong to.
MAW: I think that’s exactly congruent
with what I’m describing, and I think with
what I’ve seen not just inside of our industry,
but also outside. If we’re only treating
martial arts like a sport, if that’s all we’re
doing and, for some, that’s their objective,
then we should expect the outcomes that a
sport would give them. If they play soccer,
they’re going to get their footwork, yep, you
bet, they’re going to get some cardiovascular
help, yep, you bet, wonderful, but we offer
so much more. Our thing, our art can be so
much more for a person by sort of diminishing
it down to, I’m not an instructor, I’m not
a master; I’m just a coach. Well, a coach is a
$4.50-per-hour, or volunteer, guy who helps
coach Little League. That’s not the mentor
for the rest of my life, you know? I think
it really diminishes what we are trying to
accomplish. I think that echoes what you’re
describing. Let’s dovetail that into the work
that you’re doing with Kukkiwon, and the
challenges and reforms that you guys are
working on. Can you give me some history on
that and what your objectives and goals are?
JL: Let me get back to what we were
talking about earlier. As society is getting
civilized, the profound concepts and the
Inside Black Belt World's impressive 14,000 square feet dojang.
Black Belt World builds a tremendous inner-community.
profound ‘spiritualities’ are really fading
away, and that’s an inevitable situation;
that’s the reason why people are seeking the
martial arts programs. They are coming
into our dojangs because they are coming in
to look for that. But when they come to our
dojang and the instructors, and programs,
they were looking for; so some of the martial
arts schools in the USA are not doing so well
because they are not keeping the traditional,
more profound, spirituality in the dojang
and on the floor. We have to really bring
back those values in order for us to continue
our prosperity for other centuries.
It’s a very important thing for when
people come in, not only that they are having
fun, but they also let us teach the values that
people are looking for: More spirituality with
the profound spirit. How we talk, the way we
train, the understanding about the heart,
the core, and training, but at the same time
also making other people happier and more
content with the training program. Again, I
cannot emphasize enough how important it
is to bring back the lost values that I’ve been
talking about; the traditional martial arts
values. Lately, not only am I working with
the U.S. Taekwondo Committee to preserve
the traditional Taekwondo values, but also I
am voicing my opinions to the Kukkiwon in
Korea. Kukkiwon is undergoing a reformation
process here, and we all just want to see
Kukkiwon do better than it is.
But I think they are going to change,
and I am positive that our Kukkiwon future
will be brighter than what it is now. Now,
Kukkiwon is another organization that is
trying to preserve the traditional martial
arts values in sports Taekwondo. Some of
the leadership in Kukkiwon did not do well,
therefore we have a bad reputation in the
Taekwondo Kukkiwon, but we are changing,
we are reforming. And Kukkiwon will
do better, I hope. The Korean government
is involved in the Kukkiwon in Korea, but I
think Kukkiwon has to be an independent
organization and Kukkiwon has to be run by
the Taekwondo teachers, so they are making
sure that Kukkiwon can provide programs
that can really satisfy—especially nowadays,
the martial arts Taekwondo population is
getting diverse and we have to provide good
programs for them so that we are making
sure that we’ll be able to convince them how
effective it and how it can change their lives.
So, I’m voicing my opinion to Kukkiwon in
the hopes that they have a new life.
MAW: In the last year or two, there have
been a lot of deep concerns, and it does seem
like there has been some forward progress
and momentum on that. I think that your
influence and what you’ve helped them look
at has been very helpful in that arena. If you
don’t mind, there were a couple of items on
our list that I think might be interesting
to talk about. You have just hosted recently
your Think Tank—so up in Raleigh, North
Carolina, you have an event—do you do it
every year, or has this been—
JL: Actually, the first Think Tank was
in 2018, and I wanted to make sure that
the Think Tank really speaks about what
we do as traditional Taekwondo masters.
46 MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4

Cover Story
I invited many other people to be there,
including the Grandmaster Y.K. Kim, which
was phenomenal; he really just made the
event so unforgettable with his presence.
Day one, we had the social event; day two,
[everyone] came and spoke about what we
can do to bring back the values on the training
floor; and day three, we had half of the
speakers—they were known speakers in our
industry—and the other half was already
pre-selected. We had several applications
and we had to choose a final four, and they
were the ones presenting their classroom
and teaching also office management. We
had the concept and it was very successful.
I hope we have many more like this in our
industry. This is a way that, instead of one
known speaker actually talking about their
concepts, I made it into a contest. Presenters
came in with their topics and within
30 minutes they had to finish everything.
So, maybe the first ten minutes were more
of the cognitive PowerPoint presentations
to explain [the idea], the other ten minutes
were the practical application, and then the
rest was a Q and A session.
We had nine judges, and we also had the
audience asking during the Q and A session.
So, the judges were sitting on the floor
judging the presenter and their content, and
how it is going to affect our—we really hit it
very good. I think this is going to be a new
revolution for martial arts dojang seminars.
The traditional dojang seminar was the one
speaker talking about their thing, but again,
Think Tank was more of a contest setting.
This is another way we can define and identify
some of the unknown potential speakers
and presenters, and we truly enjoyed
having this; we thought this was a very good
idea and we’re going to continue on in 2019
in Raleigh, North Carolina again.
MAW: It’s very cool. I’ve been to pretty
much every event in our industry, and I’ve
hosted a fair number of them myself, and
I’ve always been a big fan of the mastermind
concept: The idea that if you put 15, or 20, or
30 really smart people in a room and you U-
shape table it, and everybody walks through
what they’re working on, and the challenges
that they’re having, and the things that
they’ve overcome, you really end up with
some magic at the end of the day. When you
have a bunch of smart people helping you
solve your problem, and all learning from
each other, it’s a hyper-productive environment.
And this structure is sort of a riff
on that; this structure is sort of this idea
that these guys bring to the table what they
actually did, what their actual results were,
and how all that worked and the challenges
that they faced, and here’s how they accomplished
it—and that’s super useful.
Unfortunately, in some cases, we have
some folks in our industry that are articulate
enough and can stand in front of the microphone
and scream loud enough, having
never tried or tested what they’re teaching
you; having never actually done what they’re
saying and, in many cases, having never
actually really run a very successful martial
arts school. What you’ve accomplished here
is very much anti-that; very much, “this is a
proven-in-the-trenches strategy that is actually
working today.” So, I think that’s all very
useful. Martial Arts World Magazine would
love to help you promote Think Tank and be
as supportive as we possibly can, because the
structure and format of that type of thing is
very, very useful.
JL: I’d love to see Martial Arts World
News Magazine be part of this great endeavor.
The moment you promoted the Think
Tank contest—we did not say “seminar”—we
are getting applicants from very diverse—
one [person] was talking about the human
pressure points, another one talking about
how to build your own building, another
one talking about the most effective way
of teaching poomsae, another one talking
Grandmaster Jun Lee has built the successful Global Open Championships.
MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4 47

Cover Story
Grandmaster Jun Lee is deeply passionate about the positive impact martial arts can have on children.
about how to apply physics into breaking,
and how to present a more effective teaching
in the classroom setting; another one talking
about using jung bong—meaning “long
stabbing” in Korean—using the jung bong
during poomsae training and also application
in self-defense. So, again, we did not
limit the topics; it was all different topics
that came in, and we had to sort them out.
As long as they made a good presentation in
the package, then we had to select a finalist.
But again, I’d especially love to see Martial
Arts World News Magazine be part of that
event this year.
MAW: We absolutely would love to do it.
For many years, for about seven years or so,
I was part of a very high-level mastermind
group outside of the martial arts industry,
with other associations and information
marketing folks, in all sorts of different industries—in
chiropractics, dental, cosmetic
surgery, auto repair, restaurants; mostly
small brick and mortar businesses—and
again, the structure of an event like that is
so productive for members because, again,
you’re getting real insight from people who
are actually doing it. Everybody gets to go to
work helping solve those problems.
You’ve run, obviously, very successful
martial arts schools throughout your
career, and in fact, built your own shopping
center at one point, and owned the buildings
that the schools were in and things like
that; one of the things you’ve accomplished
that might be useful for our readers is that
you’ve done a really good job in Raleigh, and
in your area, at digging deep roots in your
community. The city has named Jun Lee
Day for you, and you’ve done lots of community
outreach and community involvement
activities, which in turn helps to market the
school, but certainly also helps the community
in general, and helps get your name
out there. In addition to that, you have this
scholarship program. What type of community
outreach events do you find to be
the most productive? What was your path
through all of that? And how did that help
you grow your schools?
JL: From day one when I first opened my
dojang, I was determined that my program
has to be together with the community. Ever
since I started operating, every year, sometimes
three times a year, but at least once
a year, I did a local community event like
fundraising for charitable organizations in
our area. In the beginning I did fundraising
for the Muscular Dystrophy Association,
Easterseals Society, hospitals, Make-A-Wish
Foundation, you name it. In fact, back in
1989, I broke 5,000 boards to raise funds for
the Muscular Dystrophy Association and
I did it every year until 1995, when I found
out that of all the fundraising that we did,
80% of the donations went to the employees’
salaries and less than 20% went to the actual
cause. While the staff is very important—
they are the ones making things happen—
but I realized I wanted to make sure the
money would really get into a deeper area,
so I organized my own 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization within my organization.
I believe in education. Education is a very
important part of Taekwondo, so I say everyday
life education should be from the martial
arts. Education is a very important part of
my teaching and in my beliefs, and this is
what we can look to for the brighter future. I
organized the 501(c)(3) organization only to
Grandmaster Jun Lee has built an amazing staff of instructors.
48 MARTIAL ARTS WORLD NEWS VOLUME 19 | ISSUE 4

Cover Story
Grandmaster Jun Lee has built a highly successful after school program.
raise funds to send people to college. Anybody
in high school, attending university, grad
school, we support them and make sure they
go to college for free. We’re giving them thousands
of dollars every year but, eventually, my
goal is to expand into the local community, as
well to a county and state level. At this time,
I’m doing this mostly to send my members to
finish their education with our support.
MAW: That’s fantastic. There’s two
ways to market a school, essentially. One,
is you pay for media, whether it’s Google
Pay Per Click, or it’s Facebook ads, or
television, or radio, or newspaper, direct
mail, whatever–you buy media. Second, is
essentially working with the community
in some way. Either you’re at a carnival or a
festival or a picnic, or you’re meeting people
at an elementary school, or you’re in local
businesses, something like that. There are
these two different dynamics. One of the
things that you’ve accomplished by working
with the community so deeply is you sort
of end up becoming the Karate Guy. You’re
the Taekwondo Guy. You’re the guy that
everybody knows, and it’s a branding event
that you couldn’t pay for. It’s worth so much
money; you’d have to buy television commercials
20 hours a day, every day for 40
years to accomplish that kind of awareness.
What you can accomplish with this level of
community engagement is the same type of
a thing: People just start knowing you. It’s
critically important if you want to have a really
long career in martial arts, in running
schools for as long as you have, certainly,
and beyond.
If I’m a martial art school operator and
I’m listening to this, and the types of values,
the types of culture that you’re describing
are what my school is all about, what might
you recommend I do in my martial arts
school to get to the next level? What are the
big rocks in your career that have helped you
grow to the level that you’ve gotten to?
JL: Again, going back to the community
involvement, this is actually a very important
way to build our infrastructure for the
future. You are with the community; you are
making things, making a difference in your
community and also looking for ways to
contribute to society. That way, people will
recognize that what we do is not only for our
own profit, but this is the way that we are
keeping the people’s concept that we are with
the community, we do things with the community,
and this is their teaching. So, we
need to continue on this kind of endeavor;
that way we can build a good reputation, and
this is something I’m hoping every instructor
continues. I like to see all the martial arts
instructors, and masters, and school owners
out there making sure they behave, because
they have to be a role model in society, and
that they are educated, and part of society
and the community. Again, our organization
is nothing different from the big businesses
in the political and in the religious
organizations; we’ve got to watch out what
we do, this is very important. We have to
pay attention to it now and in the future.
MAW: Your career in the martial arts
is a good example of what you can do. You
could choose to teach just only sports, just
be a coach, just wear a t-shirt in class all you
want and have a minimal impact on your
community. Because they’re going to treat
you like soccer, you know? They’re going to
treat you like baseball. They’re going to treat
you like the volunteer baseball coach. Or,
you can choose the path that you followed.
You can choose the path that, in my view,
is the path of more impact. The path where
people—as an example, I’m 46 now, but I
texted my original martial arts instructor
from back in the Midwest when I was
literally 6 years old; 40 years we’ve had a
relationship, and he texted me Happy New
Year, I texted him Merry Christmas, you
know—
JL: That’s very good.
MAW: I don’t have that relationship
with my baseball coach. I don’t have that
relationship with my soccer coach. I don’t
have that relationship with my swim coach.
You know what I mean? But I do have that
relationship with my martial arts instructor.
I think it’s a choice. You can choose to be
just a coach, or you can choose to be something
more, and I think what I see in the
industry is that it’s also a better financial
decision. People are willing to compensate
you at a higher level. They are willing to stay
students much longer. They are willing to
refer their friends at a much higher rate.
They are willing to study with you 40 years
later. I’m not sure why you would choose the
lower path. But I’m glad that you didn’t. Any
last words that you might leave us with, Sir,
before we sign off today? I really appreciate
your time today.
JL: I cannot think of anything else.
Again, we are teaching the traditional
martial arts and I wanted to make sure
many people benefit from us and we have to
continue to work hard.
School Profile
Advice From a Champion
Master Troy Dorsey is an 8-time world champion with a combination of kickboxing and
boxing titles. He began training in the martial arts in 1974 and opened his first school
in 1981. He recently became an AMS member.
Master Troy Dorsey displays his impressive belt collection.
AMS: Master Dorsey, to what would you attribute the long-term
success of your school?
TD: What makes a champion in the ring, or a successful martial
arts school owner, is really just digging down deep, and working
hard, and doing what you have to do to reach your goals.
AMS: As a former world champion, do you focus on making your
students champions?
TD: We are servants here in our school. I can’t walk around showing
my world title belts to everybody . . . that’s not going to continue
to grow my business. We have a lot of single mothers and also a lot
of grandparents raising the grandkids, so I think you just have to
have a good product. No one comes in telling me that their child
wants to be a world champion. We do our best to help those children
do their best to work hard at school and do what they’re supposed to
do at home… The two most important things we teach at our school
are: Number one is self-control, and I know I need more of that, and
number two is respect for yourself and others.
AMS: What about martial arts technique?
TD: If they have a great kick, that’s OK, but if they have a great
attitude, that’s an A+ in my book.
AMS: You’ve been getting some amazing results recently on getting
the Opt-ins from your website to show up at the school. How are
you doing that?
TD: We’re texting. Texting is the technology. The world is texting
and we are now communicating with our people by text. It’s kind of
amazing to me—it seems like they would want to speak to somebody,
but obviously they don’t. I want to encourage anybody out there
that’s using the ATLAS system, I make a call first, and after I call and
I haven’t spoken to anybody, I get pretty good responses from text.
AMS: Thank you, Sir, for taking the time today. We really appreciate
you sharing your successful experience both inside and outside
the ring with us today
“Overwhelmed” With Leads:
An Anaheim School’s Success With ATLAS Martial Arts Software
Master Victor Candal has over 30 years’ experience in the martial arts including Kung
Fu, Hapkido, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA. MAW News invited him to chat with us about his
advertising results.
Master Victor Candal is an avid competitor and dedicated school owner
MAW: You’ve got three main forms of advertising that you’re
working with. Can you tell us what they are, please?
VC: One is through Parks and Recreation,
through the city I live close by. Another one
is Groupon, and the other one is definitely
AMS.
MAW: How has Groupon been working
for you?
VC: I don’t like Groupon too much. I get
people but they are not very qualified. I only
get about 40% [prospect to student] conversions
with Groupon, but with the other
methods I get about 60-70%. They’re usually
just passers-by.
MAW: Now, you’ve only been using AT-
LAS Martial Arts Software for how long?
VC: Two months and a half.
MAW: You tried out the ATLAS Pro program
but it started off slow—you were getting
leads but they weren’t quite what you wanted.
VC: Yeah, they were not qualified leads
because they were not responding back.
MAW: After our team spent about four weeks refining the system
for you, how is it doing now?
VC: Now, we can see more leads coming
in. It was a little bit overwhelming at
first—there were so many leads—because
I am by myself. I had to have somebody
helping me make calls and write emails to
keep in contact with all these leads.
MAW: Wow! On average, how many
leads would you say you’re getting?
VC: I would say one a day, or between
four or five times during the week.
MAW: And they’re much more highly
qualified leads than the others.
VC: Yes. They are getting better.
MAW: Great! It sounds like things are
working better for you, and we’re looking
forward to you growing in the future and
becoming an all-star ATLAS user.
VC: I will. I want to. This is the right
moment. I’ve done it before; I’m going to
do it again.
Candal enjoys spending time on the beach when he's
not at his school.
The Warrior Way
Confidence
Part 3: Increase Your Options
GRANDMASTER
BILL CLARK is a
9th degree black
belt and a former
PKA Fighter of
the Year. He is
widely considered
one of the top
experts in martial
arts business with
over 30 years of
leadership and
innovation, having
been inducted
into almost every
Hall of Fame in the
industry. He is one
of the largest multischool
owners in
the world.
➽The fourth factor in building confidence, and
the most important one, is creating options for
yourself. The control you have over events, and
therefore, the confidence you have, is in direct
proportion to your well-developed options.
Things that we perceive to be beyond our control cause
stress and worry; if the problems we face are easily within
our sphere of control, we rarely feel insecure. We are,
instead, brimming with confidence.
Your confidence in any major decision, such as
changing jobs, moving to another state, getting a
divorce, buying a business, or firing a key employee, will
always rest on one factor: The quality of your well-developed
options. It’s much easier to yell, “Take this job and
shove it!” when you have six months’ income in reserve
at the bank. It’s much easier to fire a key employee if you
have two or three more qualified people you know can
adequately replace him.
Options increase your courage and confidence dramatically.
Always be on the lookout for options. You can both
find them and create them. The more options you have,
the less chance of you being boxed into a situation from
which you feel you have no escape. Most Americans live
from paycheck to paycheck, and I suspect that people all
over the world do the same. It’s hardly any wonder, then,
that people are always worried about their job, their company,
and their health. If any one of these things fails for
more than a week, they will be in desperate trouble. Free
yourself from this form of anxiety.
Prepare for whatever problems might hurt you.
Save more money, buy catastrophic health insurance,
put extra canned food and water in storage, keep your job
contacts active, earn an MBA at night, and so on. Make
whatever sacrifices are necessary to give yourself options.
It’s amazing the increase in confidence you enjoy when
you know, no matter what happens, you have half a year to
regroup and follow a different path.
Next Level Strategy
Back to Basics: Part 1
SHIHAN
ALLIE ALBERIGO
is a 7th degree
black belt, the
founder of the L.I.
Ninjutsu Centers,
one of the largest
Ninjutsu schools
on the planet, the
author of 4 books,
and an entrepreneur
with one of the
first online coaching
companies (www.
takingittothenextlevel.com).
➽Let me quickly tell you a story about a show
that I was brought in to do. They flew me into
Australia and I had a booth; it was interesting
what I found there (this is going back probably
15 years, now).
The school owners over there were telling me about
how they were struggling and saying things like, “We
don’t have these things that you guys have in the United
States,” and they were talking about all these systems,
while they had just the basic, minimal stuff.
Of course, I’m really proud so I would say, “Hey, Sir,
you’re only doing a little, so how many students do you
have?”
And they’d say, “Yeah, I’m really struggling; I’m at like,
475 or 675 students.”
I’d quickly say, “That’s not struggling!”
With the advancement of technology, and when all
these coaches come on board, everyone has a different
get-rich-quick scheme or some shiny bell and whistle
that school owners could be selling—and I found that the
people in Australia didn’t have all this stuff. Really, what
that means is, they were buckling down on the basics. And
they were doing it so well, they had this massive following.
I think that many times we have our hands in too
many things, and I fell for this, too, in the past. I had a
system for every system that had a system for another
system. My program managers were just spending all
day trying to dot the i’s and cross the t’s and get things
done, when their only real goal was to tick and check
boxes so that I was satisfied . . . but they weren’t getting
results! Yeah, they were making phone calls, but were
they getting people, getting in touch with them, setting
up appointments? No. Because I wanted to see everything
was being done.
The basics are the most important thing, and I think
most martial arts schools are missing them. There’s
probably only four components to running a martial
arts school: It’s (1) new students, (2) existing students—
keeping those people active and excited, creating those
relationships with the students and the parents—that’s
a big deal nowadays. People don’t realize how hard that
really is because on the surface many people will “yes”
you in the all the right spots, smile, and say that they
love everything you’re saying, but in reality, you’re not
sure if that’s even true. Getting deep into their relationship
to try to find out what they really want, what
they need, and how we can be that solution for them is
important.
The third thing is a widely misunderstood part of the
school: retail. People are not retailing on a regular basis,
not supplying their students with what they need. The
fourth thing is upgrades.
If we just focused on those four things, schools would
be unstoppable.
Growth Hacks
Could Your Martial Arts School Make
an Extra $14,000.00 Next Month?
How one program changed a school’s financial future
SEAN LEE is
the Executive
Director of Sales
and Marketing
for hundreds of
martial arts schools
and specializes in
online and social
media marketing
using his extensive
professional
experience
in sports and
martial arts
marketing, contract
negotiation, and
investment.
➽A few years ago a dedicated martial artist,
we’ll call him “Master C” to protect his privacy,
was doing pretty well: His school was earning
$10,000 a month in a rural community of only
35,000 people. Out of curiosity, he attended
an after school martial arts seminar and halfway
through said to himself, “This would never
work in my community.” He was comfortable
doing what
he was doing,
and really
didn’t need to
change.
He was a great
role model to his
students, and the
parents of his
young students
would ask how he
could spend more
time influencing
their lives. Over
a period of a few
years, he would
see magazine
articles and ads
about after school martial arts, and he started to put
two and two together. If he could spend more time with
the kids, he could have a greater impact on their lives.
He asked a few parents if they would be interested in an
after school program, and enough said they were that he
decided to take a chance.
The first month he earned an extra $14,000.00, more
than doubling his monthly income. Within three months,
he had over 50 after school students and was getting rave
reviews from parents and teachers of children in the program.
He earned more income from his 50-something after
school students than from his 170 traditional students.
He was happy with the money, but he was even happier
with the changes he was making in the children’s lives.
When asked if he had any regrets about the program,
his only regret was waiting so long to start. He said, “Our
school mission statement is ‘Building self-esteem through
the pursuit of excellence.’ It’s funny, but I wasn’t pursuing
excellence myself. I was pursuing comfort. . . . I guess I
decided to practice what I preach.”
He summed up the program this way: “Mediocrity
may be fine for the
average person, but
not for me. I want my
martial arts skills to
be excellent, my students
to be excellent,
and my financial situation
to be excellent,
too. I want to pursue
excellence in every
area of my life.”
How about you?
Could your school
use an extra
$14,000.00? Would
you like to have a
greater impact on the
lives of your students?
The AMSkids Program of after school martial arts
with summer camp can change your future, just like it
did for Master C. The Start-up Kit will show you what to
do and when to do it. The AMS marketing consultants
will coach you to avoid common, costly mistakes. The
monthly support will give you day-by-day, hour-by-hour
activities for the kids. You get everything you need.
Ninja Business Tactics
Practical Curriculum
AN-SHU
STEPHEN HAYES
has authored 20
books, worked as
a bodyguard for
the Dalai Lama,
supervised over 30
school locations
worldwide, and
was named, "One
of the 10 Most
Influential Living
Martial Artists in
the World" by Black
Belt Magazine.
➽When I look around
at martial arts schools
in general, I think we’re
pretty radical. We took
the ninja martial art that I
studied in the 1970s—how
people fought in Japan
in the 1500s, and their
specific principles—and,
over some years, I took
those principles and overlaid
those with modern,
American street protection
needs. So it is a very
pragmatic martial art.
When people come into my
school, we have a Level One
which lasts from eight months
to a year, depending on how
often people come in. People practice 12 different fights
against padded targets; they practice with themselves in a
mirror, and they practice with a training partner. We tell
them: When you practice with a training partner, that’s
just for your timing; when you practice with the pads, that’s
for your power and speed so that we don’t have injuries.
We have 12 types of fights—we ask cops, and bouncers,
and even coroners for research—it could be a hook
punch, straight punch, a kick, a grab from behind, a slam
against the wall, a grab from beside where they get you
off balance, etc. We kind of brag that of these 12, you
would find only five of them in an MMA ring. An MMA
ring is very different: It’s two consensual athletes vying
with each other…on the street, it’s totally different. I have
a book, The Ninja Defense, that has all of these 12 fights
illustrated.
Of course, our students also learn such skills as how
to hit the ground, basic striking skills, and so forth. They
also learn a part of our ethics code. There are 14 of these
points of ethics, and they learn one for each belt that they
go through. They’re not required to live it, they’re required
to explore it. The first part of our ethics code would be, I
protect life and health, I avoid violence whenever possible.
There’s a Level Two, where we add some footwork,
closing in, getting inside fights, or pulling out and
repositioning, and these are the next 12 most important
things to know for street self-defense. That includes some
basic throws and we usually teach a principle: You take
the center and move a person just slightly off-balance, and
then you throw them (as opposed to throwing them first
in order to take their balance). It is a little sophisticated
and it takes people a little while to get it.
We have a Level Three, which is all green and brown
belts. Now, we’re getting into some of the grappling, where
I am changing my position in relation to them changing
their position, and doing a technique at the same time, so
it’s a little challenging. And we call Level Four black belt.
The movements themselves are not stylized; a person
would punch this way, and we would intercept the punch
this way. People don’t do that on the street. It’s my shifting,
cutting over—it’s very pragmatic, and I think that
appeals to people. They can do it. On their first lesson they
can take home something that night and believe, “I can
really do this. Maybe I’ll do it better tomorrow, or better
in three months, but I can at least access this.”
I’m kind of an outspoken advocate of, Who are the
people studying with you, and what are they expecting to
get for this pricey service, and how do they feel when they
leave your place every night?
I get them a couple hours a week, and I’ve got to make
that time truly uplifting like nowhere else does. I’ve had
several people over the years say to me, “This is more spiritually
uplifting than church.” If you run things that way,
it’s that personal, it’s that real; that’s what it takes.
Pillars of Success
The 3 Types of
Power Breathing
GRANDMASTER
Y. K. KIM is the
most successful
martial arts
business leader
in the U.S., having
written over 30
books on martial
arts, business,
leadership, and
success. He has
won numerous
public service
awards and is the
founder of the
leading martial
arts marketing
and management
company in the U.S.
➽What is the most important exercise in human
life?
Power Breathing! Use Power Breathing to exercise
24 hours a day and seven days a week. You will exercise
even while you sleep! You don’t need to devote a single
extra second or any money to breathing, because it comes
naturally to you.
If you don’t breathe, you will die, so you must breathe
to survive. Of course, you will have to breathe. However,
don’t just breathe, Power Breathe.
Why do you need Power Breathing exercise?
A healthy body requires positive blood circulation;
positive blood circulation requires fresh oxygen. Maximizing
fresh oxygen requires Power Breathing.
Power Breathing is your top priority.
Power Breathing is a natural resource of your health
that will make you healthier. It will increase the oxygen
supply to your body, increase your blood circulation,
strengthen your internal organs, improve your digestive
system, build up your immune system, balance your
hormones, relax your nervous system, calm your mind,
and increase your energy level. Power Breathing is the
best resource for inner energy. Build energy and a positive
body with Power Breathing.
There are two different types
of breathing:
Deep breathing (lower abdominal
breathing) is natural breathing.
When you breathe deeply your diaphragm
is pushed down, so when you
breathe, all the pockets of oxygen in
the lungs are being used. This is the
most beneficial breathing because
you can receive enough fresh oxygen.
Plus, when your diaphragm is
pushed down, it will strengthen your
internal organs because of internal
muscle exercise.
Shallow breathing (chest
breathing) is bad habit breathing.
When you are using your chest, you
are only doing shallow breathing. You are not using all
the pockets of oxygen in the lungs. This is a bad way of
breathing because you will have much less oxygen than
deep breathing.
What is natural breathing? When you were a baby,
you breathed with your lower abdomen. Look at a sleeping
baby: You can see its lower abdomen rise and fall when it
breathes, so we call that natural breathing (baby or deep
breathing).
What is bad habit breathing? If you ask an adult to
intentionally inhale, most people breathe by their chest.
We all breathed deeply when we were babies; unfortunately,
as we grew up, stress made us chest breathers. For
example, when people are angry, they have short and
shallow breathing. As we grew up and experienced stress,
we slowly started breathing farther upwards and adopted
this bad habit.
How do you know you have deep or shallow
breathing?
If, when you breathe, your chest rises up when you
breathe in, and it goes back down when you breathe out,
then you are actually breathing totally wrong. That is
shallow breathing. If, when you inhale, your abdomen is
full and when you exhale your abdomen is empty, then
that is the correct way to breathe. That is deep breathing.
Management Excellence
One Easy Step to Solve All Your
Martial Arts Business Problems
CHIEF MASTER
KIRK PELT
is an 8th degree
black belt and
is the President
of a multi-million
dollar, multi-school
organization, has
a 30-year track
record of success,
and is currently
on the leading
edge of martial
arts curriculum
and business
innovation.
➽What’s the ONE step that will solve all your
martial arts business problems? Easy: Close
your school!
Face it, if you have a business, you are going to have
problems. The only way to get rid of ALL your problems is
to get rid of your business.
Since that’s probably not an option, what can you do
to get rid of some of your biggest problems quickly and
easily?
Most martial arts schools have two kinds of problems:
Money and people who complain about money.
AMS can help you solve both problems at the same
time.
How much time do you and your staff spend on chasing
students who aren’t paying? The simple answer is too
much. You and your staff should be focusing on enrolling
new students and providing outstanding instruction, not
on bill collecting. AMS can save you time, headaches, and
money by handling your tuition billing for you. Our team
of professionals are trained in the latest techniques and
technology to get you more of your money.
In addition, AMS has proven low-cost, high-impact
promotions that will help your school grow. Each new
student can add between $1,000.00 and $5,000.00 to your
income. Wouldn’t it be smarter to focus on gaining new
students rather than arguing with current students? Over
time, adding $5,000.00 to your monthly income can go
a long way toward solving your money problems. Many
schools double and even triple their monthly income
after joining AMS. What difference would that make to
your peace of mind?
Could your school use an additional $5,000.00 to
$10,000.00 a month?
Would you like to have fewer headaches and more time
to devote to better instruction?
AMS can go a long way toward relieving your most
stressful business problems. We can’t take them all
away, but we can reduce them dramatically. AMSbilling
can handle those student payment problems, while our
unique marketing programs help you earn additional
income quickly.
Extraordinary Marketing
In a “Guilty-Even-If-Proven-Innocent”
Environment, Be Prepared
The higher you climb the ladder, the more of a target you become
GRANDMASTER
STEPHEN OLIVER,
is a 9th degree
black belt and is
the founder and
CEO of Mile High
Karate schools,
and founder of the
Martial Arts Wealth
Mastery Program.
➽I’ve been watching in horror as various school owners
are savaged by groups of detractors who’ve been taking
both a guilty-until-proven-innocent and guilty-afterproven-innocent
approach. It’s sad that we’re in a guilty-ifaccused
environment, but it is the current reality.
You should always create a win-win outcome and
have a VERY positive influence in your community.
I know many different friends and associates who’ve
had various publicity problems created by students,
employees, and even family members. Even those with
the most conservative environments may experience
unexpected negative publicity brought on through no
fault of their own.
How do you avoid falling victim yourself?
1. Establish your reputation in your community on
your own terms. Become very active in supporting
local charities, churches, schools, and community
events. Become very public in your community outreach
and contribution.
2. Establish a no-tolerance policy for any and all
instances of sexual impropriety among staff and
students. Have a clearly written no-fraternization
policy for staff with students. Clearly define what’s
appropriate behavior within your school.
3. There’s no such thing as being too conservative when
dealing with other people’s children. Carefully monitor
everything from how your staff dresses in and
out of the school, to their online posts, and conversations
held in your school and around students.
4. Run background checks and carefully evaluate any
and all potential staff members.
5. Implement video monitoring and recording in all
public areas of your school.
Ultimately, if and when a crisis hits...
Consult me before doing anything–or, at the very
least, get very high-quality advice from someone who’s an
expert in this field.
Like I said, I’ve been there,
done that with just about
anything you can imagine in
our industry. In 30 years I’ve
managed to never have any
significant negative publicity
for my schools, but it doesn’t
mean that staff or students
have never behaved stupidly.
I’ve always dealt with it quickly and, yes, brutally. I have
always maintained a little- or no-tolerance policy. And,
frankly, have been so actively involved in the community
that I had earned the benefit of the doubt ahead of time.
There’s a very specific method to be used for handling
bad publicity. There are MANY ways to make it worse,
not better. Be careful if a crisis hits.
Another lesson about some other high-profile
“meltdowns.”
There’s an important lesson to learn. You can seriously
shoot yourself in the foot by giving in to impulses and
desires that you know you shouldn’t. In all things, be
impeccable in your behavior. Ultimately pause and
think about any and all actions that you take–before you
take them. The rule of thumb I’ve heard many times is to
never do anything that you wouldn’t want to hit the headlines
of your daily paper. In the age of the Internet, it’s an
even-better admonition since it takes about 30 seconds
for negative news—real or imagined—about you to travel
worldwide.
Clearly, that admonition applies to all areas of your
life. Be very careful about what you Tweet, what photos
you post on Facebook, and how you treat any- and everyone
you interact with. While none of us are perfect, pause
and think about your actions ahead of time, and realize
that what seems like a good idea at the time can come back
to haunt you and torpedo your career. The higher on the
ladder you climb, the more likely any indiscretion will
come back to haunt you.
After School Excellence
How a Martial Arts School Can
Earn over $1.5 Million a Year
CHIEF MASTER
MIKE BUGG is an
8th degree black
belt and the owner
of a 1.5 million-peryear
location, with
one of the largest
after school and
summer camp
programs in the
country.
➽Take one giant step into the future.
In the year 2000, an aspiring young instructor opened
his martial arts school after several years of training
in instruction and business under his master. We’ll call
him Instructor B. He grew up in a very poor family of 16
children, and he had been working as a prison guard, so
owning a martial arts school offered him quite a different
opportunity to change his life.
He had a respectable start, earning about $6,500
a month by the end of his first year. Then his master
recommended he start an after school program with
summer camp. He was not enthusiastic, because they
had tried an after school program at his master’s school
several years prior and it did not go well. It cost too much
time, too much energy, and too much money for very
little return. They closed down the program in a couple
of months.
This time, they hoped it would be different because
they had guidance from the AMSkids program. They had
a Starter Kit with advice on what to do and what NOT to
do, and they had expert business development consultants
to advise them.
By the end of his second year, he was averaging
$22,000.00 a month, effectively tripling his income,
thanks to AMSkids. He was able to buy himself
a Corvette and a new house for his mother. Most people
would be happy with this increase, but Instructor B was
just getting started.
He continued to expand his program, and had to build
his own larger building to accommodate all the new
students. Now, his summer camp alone earns over a
quarter of a million a year, and his school’s annual
income is well over a million and a half. And that
instructor was me.
How about you? Can your school earn a $1.5 million
a year?
The AMSkids Program of after school martial arts
with summer camp can change your future, just like it did
for me. The Starter Kit will show you what to do and when
to do it. The AMS marketing consultants will coach you to
avoid common, costly mistakes. The monthly support will
give you day-by-day, hour-by-hour activities for the kids.
You get everything you need.
that can change your school’s financial future.
➽One of the biggest topics I covered in the
research for my new Training For Life book was,
“Why don’t adults attend martial arts classes?”
Statistics prove that the number of kids-toadults
is better than six-to-one, and with many
schools that open and shut down so frequently,
the numbers are probably much higher. Now,
instead of just polling people, I decided that the
best way to get feedback from the adults is to
tour the United States and offer a free seminar
to people based on educating them on personal
protection. Topics covered in my talk were
self-defense devices, martial arts in general,
self-defense techniques
taught to the public, and
why the majority of people
do not attend martial
arts schools. Most of our
events were predominantly
women of ages 12 to 80,
and averaged a little over
400 people at each event.
Once I broke the ice with the
people and gave them a comfort
zone, I gathered a few of their
reasons as to why they do not go
to martial art schools. First, many believed it was too hard
and they could not do it. People see the martial arts as high
flying kicks and deadly take-out maneuvers, and then
they look at themselves and say, “I can’t do that.” Others
stated that they have preexisting conditions like asthma,
bad backs, knee problems and learning disabilities. To
these people, we in the martial arts as a whole do not offer
programs that can work within their health problems, or
design a program that can be compatible with their bodies.
Why? Because it is easier to train the mainstream students
that come into our schools, that take what we have as our
base curriculum.
The rumor is that it doesn’t work on the street or in a
real-world environment. Backed by statistical studies and
people who trash the martial arts, this has become one
of the biggest negatives we have to face as a school owner.
We, inside our own profession, don’t help the cause by
trashing each others’ style, or going on the internet like
immature children and making fun of other systems.
The public looks for a reason to sway them either way, and
when they read this jealous junk, they decide not to train
at all, thus shrinking our market.
Another reason is that it’s too expensive, and like in
any business, you get what you pay for. Contracts roping
people in with no escape clause or any professional courtesies
gives us negative press when disgruntled customers
leave our schools. Now, I don’t agree we should give all of
the money back, or let them out of their contract if we did
what was expected of us, but I do agree that if there is a
compromise, that will give you
better press than sending a collection
agency after them.
The next comment was
expected: “I hate the whole
environment.” In different
sports, uniforms are worn, in
places of business, uniforms are
worn, and in the martial arts,
uniforms are worn. Whether
they are traditional, sporting, or
combative, they are still school
dress wear, and that in itself
gives the school a more professional look. As far as the bowing,
the regiment, and the discipline, that is what the arts
are based on. People in many instances are linear and have
no clue on how many different systems are out there, and
how many different versions of teachers there are. So, it is
our job as a teacher to educate these people by using quality
brochures that show all of the different aspects of what we
teach; otherwise, we will just fall into the category of guys
that people say teach in pajamas and walk around barefoot.
Those are some of the comments, and there are many
more, but at least we know what many are thinking.
Remember, I am only the messenger, but I am a soldier
in the martial arts, no different than you, trying to get
the people into the school to open their eyes and learn
something that, one day, may save their life or that of a
loved one.
Master Teacher
Food for Thought for Leaders, Athletes, Coaches, and Parents.
PROFESSOR
black belt and
kung-fu world
What is a Master Teacher?
A student for life, forever learning to improve oneself from
the inside out through seminars, workouts, meditation,
audio CDs, DVDs, books, the internet, workshops, coaching,
and more. A master teacher is a humble person, yet not
weak; a proud person, yet not bashful; and a follower of principles,
not personalities. Every day is about earning your
way from no belt to white belt: The art of surrendering to
win by uniting with the universal flow. It requires an acceptance
of all things you cannot change, the courage to change
those you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Some Martial Athlete Concepts
In any sport, regardless of how much talent you have, at
some point in your competitive career you will come to a
crossroad that will make or break you. I call them “polo
tricks” and to me, they are anything that goes against the
rules to gain favor or to surprise another, or even make their
road harder out of envy, race, or sex. If you are no threat, this
will never affect you; but with talent and the will and desire
to dethrone the champ, this is your number one obstacle.
Once you learn to adjust, flow, understand the game and
do it for a bigger cause, you won’t be stopped: You cannot
be stopped, even if you lose in your field but succeed in
another! You earn a higher prize that cannot be taken away.
Parent Coaches
The one thing every promoter, coach, competitor, and
even fans hate are parents that don’t follow the rules.
This problem is so bad that elite athletes stay out of
coaching future elite athletes. Parents who have never
been through the grind of that particular sport often
don’t know how to stay in their lane. Things they say and
do for their own comfort and support just make things
twice as hard for their kids. Athletic performances are
based on just that: Athletic performances. When parents
break the rules, it hurts the sport, sets a bad tone for the
team, and takes the focus off the ultimate goal, which
is to develop character under pressure. As a parent, I
know first-hand that I need to stay back out the way and
let the coach do his or her job. It is hard to control these
emotions, but we must . . . if not, who will our kids have
to turn to outside that sport? We should never badmouth
the coach, the team, or the sport to our kids. It should be,
“Yes, Ma’am,” or, “No, Sir, Coach Carter.”
Stronger than Drugs
It is all about paying it forward and passing it on. The
greatest thing we can teach our kids is how to pay it forward
and pass it on.
➽Remember when you were a kid, and you
used to dream about a time that you would be
in charge of your destiny, and nothing could
stop you from being exactly what you wanted
to be? Now, as an adult, you have the authority
you wished for as a child, but things aren’t
going the way you had planned. Does your life
seem to be all work and no play? Do you feel
uneasy about your future or anxious about
your financial security? Have you given up your
hopes and dreams without realizing it? Are
you not getting the sense of gratification that
you had hoped for? For
many of us, the dream
of a great life has somehow
faded away.
Within each of us lies a
massive amount of potential.
We all have dreams and the
desire to live the good life, but
here’s the problem: How do
we do that? Just wanting to
be successful doesn’t always
mean we can find our way
alone to achieve our dreams.
Success experts believe human beings only use five to 15
percent of our natural potential. That means we have as
much as 85% more potential within ourselves to manifest
the life and financial security that we want.
Most people talk about what they want, but only a
small number of people actually take action to make their
dreams become a reality. The truth of life is that if you
don’t take action, you will not achieve exactly what you
want in life.
As a professional coach for the last 25 years, I can
personally share with you that to be able to utilize that
85% potential, you need a mentor or a coach to accelerate
your progress by providing focus and awareness of how to
use your life energy. As Woodrow Wilson once said, “I not
only use all the brains I have, but all the brains I can borrow
from others.” I will share some wisdom from many
of the most successful people that I have studied over the
last 25 years to give you new perspectives and resources to
make your life easier and more fun.
We have five types of life energy: Mental, physical,
emotional, spiritual, and financial. How you spend your
life energy determines what outcomes you get in life. To
change your life, you must use your life energy in an effective
and efficient manner. In my coaching sessions, I will
provide you with proven success principles and a holistic
approach to assist you in breaking past any mental and
emotional blocks to reaching your
personal and professional goals.
As your personal mentor, it’s
my job to assist you in producing
extraordinary results in your
life, and as an entrepreneur. The
purpose of my Coaching Program
is to assist you in transforming
the QUALITY of your life in
all areas. Our goal is to be happy
throughout the journey—not just
go for a destination of money
or wealth. By using the proven
techniques I am going to share with you, you will improve
your professional performance and enhance the quality
of your personal life. My goal is to give you solutions to
build a solid foundation so that your greatest potentials
for learning, achievement, and success can be utilized.
This is what I call your “Intellectual Capital.”
I will help you determine where you want to go in the
future. I will help you determine how to create intentions,
choices, and actions that will activate the remaining 85%
of natural talent and potential within you that is just
waiting to be used.
➽To what extent can we control the nature of
people or things?
The river can be channeled, yes, and with great effort!
But sooner or later, the water will get into the sea. Any
artifice generates risks, because when the water contained
in a reservoir is suddenly released, it generates a destructive
wave… or electricity in a turbine!
Nature, nonetheless,
always prevails, and all we
can do is defer it; modulate
it. Any attempt of absolute
control sooner or later
generates an absolute lack
of control.
“You cannot stem the
tide,” reads the saying, and
so, the great forces of life,
evolution, and fate always
sneak through each and
every gate we can establish.
Sobriety is neither an
antidote, nor an impregnable
bastion, but it’s an
equalizer of disasters. Likewise, reflection will not prevent
us from swallowing each and every bitter pill, but it will
allow us to learn from them, and maybe, if only at times,
will let us break the destructive cycle of the snake biting its
own tail; of the broken record repeating again and again
the same mistake … But evolution is also passing peacefully
to the following one, without fear, and yes, with illusion,
because however much illusion is a deception, it’s “our deception,”
and therefore the indispensable instrument with
which our nature endowed us to move forward; the carrot
is as necessary as the stick for the donkey to walk.
Where is the limit of responsibility with oneself
and with others?
The Master has no choice but to intervene. When?
Every system; every nature; every context, whether
anthropological, historical or social, creates its premises.
If we take freedom as a great premise, everything will
be reduced to a reflex action of our natures (that of the
Master, of the student, in their contexts).
Everything is a matter of degree. There are teachers
who decide to do, others to make do, and still others who
take advantage of the appropriate circumstances so that
events occur, that evolution acts, that the major destiny of
each student can find its place.
Everyone here, as usual, will act according to his or
her nature, the mixture of
both will pay off with its
mistakes and agreements.
What would be considered
wrong?
From a certain point of
view there are some points
to think about: What, instead
of opening prospects,
closes them? What, instead
of modeling, amputates?
What, instead of pruning,
ends in cut? What only removes
the excess and forgets
about supplying what is
missing? What treats with
excessive rigor what should be treated with compassion?
And what, on the contrary, (beyond the Master’s nature
or convenience) treats with disdain the unforgivable? And
that, like most things, is a Variable border.
We return to the natures, we return to the particular,
we return to the context.
You cannot tame a thoroughbred like a Percheron, or a
Percheron like a thoroughbred. Is the taming you learned
the right one for that horse?
“Each bull has his own fight,” but is it necessary to
fight every bull that comes out from the bullpen’s door?
Sometimes not to do is much more than to do.
Above all, particular, larger values act, greater forces
are imposed; we are all a tiny part of other titanic ones.
We can only find the way in the narrow hallway of our
destinies, one millimeter to the left ... two to the right ...
assume our own destiny with delight. If playing cards and
losing is a pleasure, what will it be to win?
Well, my friend ... That’s talking to God!
12 Tips For Success:
Proven Business Practices for Your School
BRANDON KIM
is the President
of Vision Martial
Arts Supply, Los
Angeles Branch,
who helps school
owners all over the
U.S. maximize their
retail sales and
drive more revenue
into their schools.
➽This September, I have for you 13 tips for
success; they are summarized tips from successful
business owners from all around the
country. Take time to apply them to operating
your martial arts school—you’ll be glad you did!
1. Disagreements can be good for a business!
A pointed discussion can be good for a business; it gets
people thinking. When trying to grow your school, you
may disagree during brainstorming sessions. Turn that
disagreement into an even better plan for success.
2. No matter how high you rise, keep doing the
grunt work. That is not to say fill your day with it, but if
it needs to be done, then do it. You are leading by example.
For years, Charlie Valluzzo, owner of over 50 McDonald’s
stores, greeted customers at lunchtime by saying, “Welcome
to McDonald’s. Can I take your order?” It inspires
your staff to know that you’ll do anything to make your
school a better place, and they will, too. Also, you’ll stay in
touch with your roots.
3. Losing a customer doesn’t have to be the end
of the world if you learn something. If you take the
time to understand why a student left, you’ll know what
your problem areas are and be able to improve upon them
next time, or prevent the problem before it happens.
4. Pay beyond minimum wage. Think of it like
this: Minimum wage equals minimum passion. Martial
artists are people of great passion and depth; pay your
employees for that commitment.
5. Staff meetings are NOT a waste of time. During
the always-on-the-go ’80s and dot-com ’90s, staff
meetings fell out of fashion for many companies. Some
managers held them in hallways to keep them short. Others
swore by the standing room only sort, where decision
makers got together without chairs so the meetings lasted
only minutes. The fact is that staff meetings are important,
and having them weekly is best. Remember, staff
meetings foster communication and problem solving.
6. Support the companies you’d like to have as
customers. Support companies you can work with like
health food stores, or even companies that will trade you
discounts and distribute your literature to help their
employees. Remember, a company who wants healthy
employees is a great partner for a martial arts school!
7. Take note of the little things you’re doing or
using and always see if there is a better method
or better material. Taking in the less obvious aspects,
business can bring about innovation and reduced expenses.
For example: Installing tile in your bathrooms
and changing areas is cheaper than carpeting in the long
run. Buying an expensive heavy-duty mop is much more
cost-effective than ten cheap ones, because it saves a little
money and lots of labor.
8. When others are giving up, look for hidden
opportunity. If other schools nearby you are closing,
look for opportunities like having their students join your
school, or even find out why they closed.
9. When hiring support personnel, given the
choice between a singular superstar and a team
player, hire the one who’s team-oriented. A team
player will take more ownership and help your school
grow. You are more likely to lose the superstar to their
goals or to a higher-profile position. In the world of martial
arts, they can break from your school and take your
students right from under your nose.
10. Write down your priorities on a regular basis.
This helps you remember and rearrange your priorities
(remember, what was #2 yesterday might be #7 today).
You won’t forget an appointment with a potential student
or Grandmaster if it’s written down. In the end, it doesn’t
have to be complicated, or even on a device; plain, readable
handwriting works just fine.
11. You can’t grow it alone. You have to have support.
The worst thing you can do is to build a business and
not have people with you, because your growth will be
dramatically limited. Make staff members your partners
by paying them well, promoting from within, and taking
care of them. Remember, organizations are made of
people and you can’t have ten branch locations without a
team of people to operate those locations—so groom your
people. No man is an island.
12. Your competition isn’t who you think it
is. If you own a Taekwondo school, it’s not the Kung Fu
school down the street; instead, it’s the gym promoting
health and fitness—the same as you are. Take a broader
view of who you’re competing against and you’ll be
more prepared.
Bring Focus to Your
Surroundings
is president of
a member of the
American Martial
Arts Association
Sport Karate
League and Hall
been a member of
Mindfulness
Meditation for
Martial Arts, as well
as several other
books, programs,
and audio CDs on
meditation and
success training.
➽Take a good, long look around you. Are the
people you hang out with clear-minded gogetters,
or have you surrounded yourself with
what are called “space cadets”—people who
float through a muddled life with no sense of
direction? If you have space cadets in your
life, then let them go and find people who are
grounded in reality.
Sadly, you may have a significant other who is in
the same ballpark as your friends. When you come to
that realization, it's time to also do some work on your
relationship, because both of you need to be committed to
achieving certain things in your lives. While you attempt
to thrive, you cannot let your significant other pull you
down and apart.
When you are single, it is not so hard to look at your
life and decide what to eliminate. Having a significant
other will be more of a challenge. Don’t turn the other
way; you must move forward. The television shows you
watch, for example, might be hindering your clarity.
Reality shows are very rarely based in reality. If you must
watch television, pick something that stimulates your
mind, gets you thinking. The same thing goes for the
music you listen to and the books you read. An occasional
thriller is fine, but a steady diet of thrillers, paranormal
romance, or biographies of movie stars will only hurt you
in the end. Pick some nonfiction books that will help you
achieve clarity, goals, and self-development overall.
When you watch some educational television, make
sure that your snacks are healthy. Drink water and eat
fruit or nuts. Your overall diet has a big bearing on whether
you can achieve clarity. When you are buzzed on caffeine
from soda or way too much coffee, not only will your
heart race, but your thinking will be all over the place.
Visualization and clarity go hand in hand. When you
take time to visualize the life you desire, everything will
come into focus. When you are building muscle, the best
way to do it is to lift the weight, hold it for a moment, and
then gently ease it back down. The holding pattern will
create a vibration in your body. You will feel the energy
and slowly lowering the weight makes your muscle work
harder. You can take the same principle and apply it to
achieving clarity. Take time each day to sit quietly and visualize
everything in your life the way you want them to be
right at that moment. Really feel it throughout your body.
As you do this each day, you are building the muscle of clarity.
Your clarity will get stronger and stronger each day, and
those 90-day goals will be very clear and attainable to you.
You now have a good understanding of what clarity is.
It is essential that you act on what you have just read and
not let the idea of gaining clarity sit and gather dust in the
hard drive of your mind. Remember that clarity depends
on you and your choices, so if you are allowing others to
choose your goals, and just acting like a plastic bottle bobbing
around in the ocean ... who knows where you will end
up? Act today!
Master the Basics
How to Get the Most out of
Your Next Belt Test
MASTER
TINA BANE
is a 6th degree
master instructor
and owner of a
Top Ten martial
arts school with
successful after
school and summer
camp programs.
➽Belt testing is one of the hallmarks of the
martial arts that set them apart from other exercise
and activity programs. It is an important
key to student retention and a fundamental
means of teaching some of our most effective
life lessons. However, it is also one of the most
effective tools we have to promote our schools
and help them grow.
Do you know how to get at least five new students per
month from belt tests? It’s fairly easy, if you know how.
Test every seven weeks.
Each student will only be qualified to test every other
cycle, making it about three months between tests for each
student; but by holding a test more often, you decrease the
number of students testing, making it easier to manage for
the staff and more personal for the students. Plus, you average
your income much better if you charge a test fee (we don’t).
Gather a crowd.
Each student must bring at least five friends or family
members to witness their test. These witnesses help the
student learn to perform well under (emotional) pressure
and provide a market of potential new students.
Keep a dual focus.
Whatever you say during the test, and whatever you
ask the students to do, have the audience in mind. Take a
few extra moments to explain to the audience what they
are seeing – what the students are doing, and why they are
doing it.
Emphasize the benefits of martial arts training.
Having students stand up and recite some of the
improvements they have made because of the martial
arts not only serves to increase retention by reminding
them of the value of your classes, it also serves to encourage
the audience members to enroll when they hear the
great results their own friends and family members have
achieved.
Give a Trial Lesson.
Every belt test should contain an exhibition, and part
of that exhibition should be an audience participation segment
of competitions and a quick mini-class.
Make a special offer.
Everyone who attends the test should receive at least a
FREE week of classes.
When you have a large crowd, impress upon them the
value of training at your school as evidenced by student
testimonials. Give them a chance to feel the fun of training,
and then make them an offer they can’t refuse. You
will easily get at least five new students per test.
Instructional Excellence
Is Your Instruction
Physically Fit?
GRANDMASTER
TIM MCCARTHY
is a 9th degree
black belt and
is a martial arts
educator with a
master’s degree in
education. He has
been instrumental
in developing two
industry-changing
programs, plus
has directed and
been featured in
hundreds of martial
arts videos and
webinars.
➽You may think this is a
silly question because martial
arts training is one of the
best physical fitness programs
ever created by man,
so OF COURSE martial arts
instruction leads to physical
fitness. What I want to suggest
is that physical fitness
goes more than skin-deep,
and even more than muscledeep.
Students who come to your
classes should get stronger. That
means you must put them through
some anaerobic exercise to develop
explosive power in their techniques.
Students should also get into better shape. That means
you must put them through some aerobic exercise to
develop their oxygen uptake and endurance.
Students should get more flexible in your classes. That
means you must encourage them to stretch their limits by
stretching and by kicking higher.
My guess is that so far, you are batting 1,000. Martial
arts training is better than running, weight lifting, and
even yoga because it incorporates all three areas of fitness
in a single program.
Now, let’s take it to the next level: Do your students
exercise their internal organs along with their muscles?
Health involves more than just strong muscles; without
healthy organs, you will just end up a good-looking corpse.
Internal health is really more important than the external
appearance of health. Do you practice various forms of
Power Breathing in class?
Do your overweight students get slimmer and trimmer
due to your instruction? I don’t mean just a few
success stories, I mean the average student. Do you help
them eat and drink better by providing information on
healthy and unhealthy foods? Do you provide simple,
effective weight loss advice? Do you provide regular advice
on eating your way to better health even for those who are
not overweight?
Are your students well-rested? So many of us push our
students to achieve more and more, that we sometimes
forget that they also need to rest and recuperate. Exercise
stimulates your body to rebuild itself stronger, but unless
you get enough rest, it will never get the chance to rebuild.
Many intense athletes get so caught up in the “tear down”
phase of growth that they over-train themselves and actually
get weaker instead of stronger (and sometimes injure
themselves).
Finally, are your students getting positive mental
training? I know, I’m supposed to be talking about physical
fitness, but without a positive mental attitude you
cannot put your heart into your workouts. What good is
it to be able to break six boards with a side kick if you feel
depressed all the time? It would be more valuable to break
your bad habit of depressive thoughts.
Physical fitness for the individual is not as easy as
looking at someone’s waistline. There is a lot more to
physical health than meets the eye. Likewise, the physical
fitness of your classroom instruction is not so easy as
looking at the amount of sweat on your student’s uniforms.
I recommend you look deeper into their whole
health needs, and provide bigger and better instruction.
How to Lose Respect
in One Lesson
AMBER LOGAN
is a martial
arts business
development
consultant with
a background
in multiple sales
disciplines, event
promotion, and is
an active student of
the martial arts.
➽If you want to lose the respect of your students,
here’s how to do it, and do it quickly: Act like a bill
collector instead of a martial arts instructor.
Most of the martial arts masters I speak with on a daily
basis became professional instructors because they wanted
to share with others the benefits they had received from
practicing the martial arts. They remember the close bond
they had with their own master, and the impact he had on
their lives. They hope they can earn that kind of respect from
their own students and have a similar effect on their lives.
They did not open a martial arts school so that they
could chase after people for money—that just wasn’t part
of the game plan.
Unfortunately, things happen. The primary income
of a martial arts school is the tuition students pay for
instruction, and that tuition is usually paid over time in
monthly payments. Not everyone will remember to pay
on time. Some people will have accidents or other unforeseen
expenses and won't want to pay for a month or two.
At that point, what can you do?
Here’s a little secret: The right answer is NOT to become
the bill collector and ask the students for the money
they owe you. The right answer is also NOT to ask your
spouse or a staff member to ask the student for money.
Both of these solutions create more problems than they
solve, because they create an adversarial relationship
between the student and the school.
Fortunately, the right answer is also just one easy step:
Hire a professional tuition billing service from the beginning
to take all those headaches away. You can then take
all the time you and your staff currently spend on sending
late notices, calling students on the phone, and dealing
with frustrated parents in person, and use that time to
recruit new students. Every hour you spend collecting
tuition could be invested in recruiting new students who
are worth thousands in additional income. When you try
handling your billing in-house, you save a nickel and miss
out on making dollars. It’s just not worth it.
Professional companies also provide additional professional
services like accounting. Whenever you want to
know who has paid and who is late, you can get up-to-date
reports online any time. The best companies also offer
other valuable services like marketing materials, management
assistance, and consulting.
If you or any member of your staff is wasting time
and ruining your reputation by chasing after students
for money, I recommend trading in your headaches for
extra time to enroll new students and earn new income.
Call the professionals at AMS at 1-800-275-1600 to
your school. AMS is your one-stop shop for martial arts
The Day I Was Saved by
Grand Master Jhoon Rhee
SENSEI
GARY LEE,
the American
Samurai, is a 9th
Dan black belt,
a USA Karate
Federation gold
medalist, winner
of five Super
Grand National
Titles, a featured
actor in the movie
Sidekicks, and
is the founder of
the National Sport
Karate Museum.
When Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee heard of my endeavor
with the Sports Karate Museum almost 20 years
ago, he sent me personal, autographed pictures with
him, Bruce Lee, Allen Steen, and Jeff W. Smith, along
with his statements and articles he has blessed us with
over the years, and he signed a personal note blessing
the project.
However, his friendship goes much deeper than that!
Super Grands, Hollywood, C.A., 1994
I am backstage, and I am the Master of Ceremonies
for the Super Grands, and I am with Scott Hogarth from
Canada. All of a sudden, there is a small disturbance by
the back curtain and I recognize that we have a special
surprise visitor. It is Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee. The problem
is, the security guard will not let Grandmaster Rhee
come in, and he is being very rude, and I’m sure he has no
idea who Grand Master Rhee is.
I get up and ask the security guard to let him through.
He is even ruder, and then he grabs my shoulder. Without
hesitation, I lock my arm around him and I drop him. I do
not hit him, just sweep him to the ground and embarrass
him a little.
I take Grandmaster Rhee’s hand and arm and walk
him backstage. As we are walking—really, we are shooting
down the hallway—I share with him that I will be in so
much trouble with Boice Lydell, the producer, because I
took down one of his security guards!
Grandmaster Rhee says, “Gary-san,” my little friend,
“I will go on stage and share a couple of stories and take
care of it. Trust Me, Gary-san.”
I did trust him and he kept his word. What he shared
saved my hide with Boice Lydell. Grandmaster Rhee
performed 100 push-ups in one minute, he did a side kick
out to the side of his body with a glass of water on his head,
staying perfectly balanced, and he told stories of grandeur,
and then he blessed the tournament.
What a blessing and a great man he was.
