Welcome back to Meadow Lane for what’s sure to be
an exciting match in the Vanarama National League
promotion race, with this evening’s visitors two
points above us in fourth place.
We recorded our third consecutive victory in convincing fashion
against Eastleigh on Saturday and you can take a look at the best
images on page 18.
Kyle Wootton discusses our current league position and the pressure
to win every game on page nine, while we bring you news of
international recognition for one of our youngsters on 15.

Saturday’s display against Eastleigh was, in my view, our most complete
performance of the season – and we’ll need to replicate it tonight against
a very strong Halifax side who will be keen to get back to action having
seen their match postponed at the weekend.
W
e were relentless on Saturday,
not giving Eastleigh a single
chance, and we could have
scored a lot more goals in the second half
considering the number of chances we
created. We opened them up consistently
and got a lot of joy from wide areas.
That’s the biggest factor – getting the
players in the right positions. The finishes
will come and, on another day, like in our
previous home game against Barnet when
we scored six, the scoreline would have been
far more convincing.
It was a performance that was right up my
street because we controlled the game so
well, even when we lost the ball. Our offthe-ball
work was really good and that was
pivotal to us keeping a clean sheet, which I
was really pleased with.
We’re conscious we’ve been going behind in
games giving ourselves work to do, so we’ve
been working on it. We want to be more
complete and, to achieve that, our work off
the ball has to be better. We’ve addressed it
and I was happy it resulted in a clean sheet.
Not conceding was a big plus for us.
A relentless run of fixtures lies ahead of
us but that’s exactly what we want right
now. Games being called off has been a
frustration and I think we saw a release from
that at the weekend.
Now it’s about finding our form, building
momentum and pushing up the league.
Everyone can see that our top level of
performance is good – we’ve just got to
keep finding it and get into a rhythm.

support and I wish those of you making
the trips to Woking and Chesterfield a safe
journey.

Honours are even as we
face FC Halifax Town
tonight, with both clubs
having won one of two previous
meetings this season.
The visitors have not played a
game since we beat them in the FA
Trophy at the Shay 10 days ago after
Saturday’s home match with Dover
Athletic was postponed because of a
waterlogged pitch.
Ironically, Dover were our
scheduled opponents in midweek
but the match at the Crabble Athletic
Ground was postponed for a second
time with their pitch again being
deemed unfit due to the weather.
Halifax have been something of a
surprise package this season and are
currently well placed in the play-off
positions on 50 points, which has led
to manager Pete Wild being linked
with various managerial vacancies
due to the impressive job he has done
at the Shay.
He said: “Because the team are
doing well, the person at the head of
that will get talked about.
“My job is to do the best I can for FC
Halifax Town and I’m trying to do that
every day.”
Discussing his team’s promotion
prospects, Wild said: “All the
pressure’s on the big boys because
they’ve spent all the money.
“The only pressure on us is that we
put on ourselves and I alleviate that
by just telling them to go out, play
and enjoy it.
“Competing with the big boys in
this league is fantastic and I’m pleased
for the group, the club, the owner
and the fans that we’re fighting at the
right end of the table.”
Our first meeting took place back
in October, a National League clash at
the Shay, and it was certainly eventful
as we surrendered a two-goal lead to
lose 3-2.
Ruben Rodrigues put us into the
lead when he was first to the ball
and produced a magnificent longrange
lob over Shaymen keeper Sam
Johnson, and that lead was doubled
in the second half when Alex Lacey
headed home a corner.
Halifax had Tom Bradbury sent off
on the hour mark but despite their
man disadvantage, Jordan Slew,
Billy Waters and Matty Warburton all
scored to secure the points.
In the recent Trophy tie, also at the
Shay, Kairo Mitchell struck late on to
send us into the quarter-finals.
We’d taken an early lead through
Rodrigues but that was cancelled
out by Waters after the break.
But Mitchell was on hand to apply
the finishing touch after Jayden
Richardson’s surging run presented
Cal Roberts with the chance to cross.
Halifax again ended the game with
10 men after Jay Benn was shown a
second yellow late in the game.
After the match Wild said: “They
scored early on whilst we looked way
off the pace. We often do look off
the pace when we have had a longer
break.
“We said there was nothing to lose
in the second half so we wanted to
exploit their weaknesses and that was
rewarded with a really well worked
goal.
“But they then brought on some
quality players and created a chance
from nothing and it has won them
the game.
“We’re disappointed with the result
but there were some pleasing aspects
to our play.”

We come into tonight’s big game against promotion
rivals Halifax in eighth place despite having won our
last two league matches – a 6-1 demolition of Barnet
and a 2-0 cruise against Eastleigh, with Wootton
scoring in each to take his season tally to 17.
And, while victory tonight could see us leapfrog Halifax
into fourth place, Wootton doesn’t believe the standings
tell the true story of the season so far.
“The table is a bit false for me. We’re not looking too
much into it,” said our top scorer.
“It’s good that a lot of people aren’t really mentioning us
and that we’re seen as underdogs at this stage.
“We’re in a lower position than we want to be at the
minute but we’ve got games in hand and a lot of the top
teams still to play, which will give us the opportunity to
make ground up quickly.
“It’s not a worry for us – we’re just focusing game by
game and are determined to put ourselves in a good
position for the final weeks of the season.
“We don’t mind being under the radar at all – we’re in a
good place.”
Wootton does, however, acknowledge the expectation
placed upon him and his team-mates to have the club
competing at the top of the table.
“I still feel a pressure when I go out there because, due
to the size of the club, we’re expected to win games
whether it’s home or away,” he said.
“But I think we’ve got a group that thrives off the
pressure of knowing we need to get results.
“There are some players in the squad, myself included,
who have had that experience of coming up short.
“But this is a young squad, and I think people forget
that. The majority of players are under 26 and, while we
do have a good mix with a few over 30, we are learning
every day under a great head coach, along with Michael
Doyle who plays a massive part due to his experience of
playing in a number of leagues.
“We believe we can do it and we’ll be giving everything
we can.”

National League trip to Dover will
now take place on Tuesday 26 April
(7.45pm).

A huge thank you to everyone who helped raise a
magnificent total of £2,632 for Leila Rose Hallam at
Saturday’s match.
Leila, 7, has been battling against rhabdomyosarcoma, a
rare and aggressive form of cancer, since October and it
has sadly spread to various areas of her body.
The nature of her cancer means doctors have been unable
to find her primary tumor, which is key to halting the
spread. This means the tumor could return after treatment
and she will therefore be closely monitored.
Leila’s treatment will last at least a year and will consist of
strong chemotherapy, radiotherapy and operations.
Her wish is to travel to Disneyland once she is well enough
and, with incredible support already shown for her cause,
the family have reached their £20,000 fundraising target.
They now want to donate funds to the rhabdomyosarcoma
clinical trial to promote awareness of a cancer which affects
fewer than 60 children in the UK each year.
To help raise awareness, Matt and his friends will be
tackling the Three Peaks Challenge in June, hiking up
Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike in
under 24 hours.

MUNAKANDAFA HAS BEEN TESTING HIMSELF
ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE
The youngster has represented England Colleges on
two occasions this season, scoring in both games,
and has picked up some wonderful experience
along the way.
“The first training camp was at St George’s Park,
where the senior England team base themselves,” said
Munakandafa, who joined us this summer. “We had
England coaches and the facilities like the swimming
pool were amazing.
“There was a real professional feel and it was a
motivational experience for me. There were a lot of
11v11s in training to establish who would be starting the
game at the end of the camp, so you had to be on form
every day to get your chance to play.”
The first match was against the Independent Schools
FA – a team comprised of the best players from private
schools – and Munakandafa more recently pitted his
wits against a Welsh college side in Cardiff.
“I’m a striker/winger and I’d say my best attributes are
my pace, strength and ability to take players on one-vone,”
said Munakandafa.
“To break into the England College set-up I had to go
through trials in Newcastle with around 500 other players.
I did well enough to get called back for a final trial and, up
against around 80 players, I managed to get called up.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Notts so far. I feel really
welcome and our coaches Craig Gordon and Mark
Burton have brought the best out of me in a really short
space of time. I’m really grateful to them.”
It’s also been a special time for Munakandafa’s loved
ones, who have enjoyed seeing his continued success.
“All my family and friends are really proud that I’ve won
international caps,” he said. “I’ve got family in America
and Zimbabwe and they’ve all been calling me!
“My great grandad, who I was fortunate to meet as he
lived until he was 108, founded a club in Zimbabwe years
ago who wear the same colours, so it feels like home at
Meadow Lane!
“I’ve been lucky enough to train with the first team a
few times and I’ve spoken to Adam Chicksen (Zimbabwe
international). He’s very experienced and is someone I
look up to.”

wonderful – and sometimes
unprintable – contributions

From debates about the non-league
pyramid structure, printed programmes,
officials, friendly clubs or nostalgic trips
down memory lane, we get the full
spectrum of letters and emails.
Often a reader will spark a great
debate. This week, Ray Ellis from
Tonbridge is that man with a question
that has had our inbox flooded.
Tonbridge Angels’ Sonny Miles
recently claimed the club’s record
number of appearances with 377. Who,
Ray asks, is the record holder at one
club across the whole of non-league?
Well, it certainly resonated.
A reader from Grays flagged 673 games
played by Phil Sammons (top left) and
there was a shout for Gerry Keegan
(topright) of South Liverpool, who
played 544 times for the famous club.
Gloucester City fans have been on
touch on their legendary midfielder
Tom Webb (below), who made 718
appearances for the Tigers before
retiring age 34.
Regular contributor to our letters page,
Marine superfan Barry Lenton, suggests
Peter Smith with 957, while we also had
shouts from Bognor Regis Town and
Hampton & Richmond Borough.
The nature of non-league football
means it may be hard to come up with
a definitive answer.
Earlier in the season, we spoke to Terry
Buss (above) at Hanworth Villa as the
one-club man celebrated 800 official
appearances for the step-five outfit –
although he wondered if it was even
more than that.
The 35-year-old keeper made his
debut when he was 16 – illustrating
just how long it takes to rack up these
numbers – and he was eyeing 1,000.
“I’ll go as long as my body lets
me, it’s starting to ache now!” he
told The NLP. “Now that the 800
is up, the magic 1,000 is in sight.
It would be another three or four
years without missing a game but
I’ve not missed many over the last 19
years so, fingers crossed, I can have
a good go.
“My son, Jimmy, is 12, I’m hoping when
he gets to 16 he’s good enough to
come in and take over from me!”

LAUNCH COLIN SLATER
COMMUNITY HERO AWARDS
Notts County Foundation is proud to announce the launch of the
‘Colin Slater Community Hero Awards’ to celebrate outstanding
individuals who have gone above and beyond to support and serve
their communities throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
As is abundantly obvious, Colin was a
great philanthropist and supported a
number of charities and organisations
across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
– including a 19-year tenure as a trustee
of Notts County Foundation. The Colin
Slater Community Hero Awards provide
an opportunity for members of the local
community to nominate individuals who
they feel are deserving of recognition
for their selflessness and positive acts of
kindness.
Sam Crawford, Head of Business
Development at Notts County
Foundation, said: “We are absolutely
thrilled to announce the launch of the
Colin Slater Community Hero Awards
scheme. My fond memories of Colin
revolve around his passion to help others
when and wherever possible, often going
out of his way to put smiles on other
people’s faces. Through these awards,
we hope to play a small part in honouring
Colin’s legacy, as well as celebrating
the wonderful people within our local
communities.”
Five community heroes will be selected
and will be offered two complimentary
tickets each to Notts County Football
Club’s home game against Yeovil Town
on Saturday 5 March, as well as have the
opportunity to join club legend Les Bradd
on the balcony of the Derek Pavis stand
at half-time.
Tom Walters, Account Director at The
Dairy and Trustee of Notts County
Foundation, said: “The Colin Slater
Community Hero Awards are a brilliant
way to not only commemorate Colin
Slater’s compassion and generosity, but to
also recognise the outstanding individuals
in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire that
have made a difference to people’s lives.”
Nominations for the Colin Slater Community Hero Awards are now open, with the
five winners being announced on Monday 28 February. For more information or to

We’re looking for more matchday helpers to
assist with our academy fundraising!
As supporters are aware, loss of grant funding means
additional money needs to be raised to provide our
youngsters with the best possible environment to aid
their professional and personal development.
While our owners have given generous backing, the
OSA are committed to supporting our academy and are
working flat out to raise £1200 per month with the help
of our fans.
We’d like to increase this donation but need more
helpers if we’re to do so. We’re looking for someone to
run a Golden Goal for us in the Kop at each match, while
we also need someone to stand in for Vanessa in the
Broken Wheelbarrow to do a scratch card on matchdays
when she has to work. If anyone can help, please email
secretary@ncfcosa.co.uk.
Tickets for our Grand Prize Draw are still on sale. To buy
yours, see John Terrington in hospitality or Loz Clough
at the NCFCOSA office on matchdays. The first prize is a
bathroom suite, the second is for a weekend in London
