BAD SACHSA is one of the most beautiful spa and 

holiday resorts in the southern Harz region. Many hours 

of sunshine are alluring in the mild summers. In the wintertime, 

the Ravensberg offers all kinds of opportunities 

for winter sports, and the peak of the local mountain of 

Bad Sachsa is accessible by car. 

The cozy town centre, located around the Protestant St. 

Nikolai Church invites you to linger. On a leisurely stroll 

through the village, you will hear many birds chirping in the 

vitality park with its lake and the city park with the 

historical “Schmerl”- Fountain. The neat Art Nouveau 

villas and historic buildings give the town an appealing flair. 

Entertaining events take place all year round in the 

Vitalpark and in the Kurhaus. The natural and prehistoric 

history museum, and the permanent exhibition 

„Our true identity was meant to be destroyed“ at the 

borderland museum are also must-sees. 

Along with the districts of Steina, Tettenborn and Neuhof, 

Bad Sachsa is worth a visit at any time of the year.

The northern half of STEINA is surrounded by spruce and 

deciduous forests. To the south, a natural monument, visible 

from afar, towers above the village: the “Roemerstein”, a 

rock massif. 

In the wild and romantic valley “Steinatal” with its 

drinking water reservoir, visitors can experience the interplay 

of water and glass in the historical glass museum. 

The river “Steina”- whose high waters can flow into the 

Elbe- seeps away in summer in the centre of the village to 

form a typical karst creek.

The settlement of TETTENBORN probably dates back 

to around 800 AD when a prince built a small fortress 

beside the sacred “Born” (well). It was then taken over by 

the progenitor of the von Tettenborn family. 

A few hundred meters from the former inner-German border, 

the “Harzer Grenzweg”‚ begins here and takes 

you along the „Green Band”‚ via Walkenried and the 

“Brocken” to the foothills of the Harz 

In NEUHOF you will find gypsum quarries with a rich 

deposit of gypsum- a discovery on various nature trails, 

such as the nature trail at the “Kranichteich” (crane 

pond) and the circular hiking trail near Neuhof. 

Landmarks are the “Sachsenstein” cliffs, visible from the 

outskirts of the town.

KARST HIKING TRAIL 

The hiking trail “Harzer Baudensteig” guides hikers on more 

than 100 km through the southern Harz from Bad 

Grund to Walkenried. Small restaurants, the so-called 

“Bauden”, await along the trail with delicious regional 

specialties. 

A variety of well signposted paths with great views and 

small attractions along the way make this hike a very special 

experience. 

Starting in Bad Sachsa, visitors can hike along one of the 

most interesting parts of the 1,393 km of the former 

inner-German border. 

On the trail past Walkenried and Hohegeiss and towards the 

Brocken, a unique biotope exists today on the former 

secret border paths. 

On the southern edge of the Harz mountains, the “Karst 

hiking trail” stretches across the three federal states of 

Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and Lower Saxony. 

The “Sachsenstein” near Bad Sachsa is an imposing 

rock massif. Perfect terrain for looped hikes and cycle tours 

on which you will pass impressive castles, fortresses, 

monasteries, museums, and mines.

On the traces of a historic North- South trade route, the 

“Kaiserweg” (emperor’s path) runs south from Goslar via 

Walkenried to the Kyffhäuser hill range. On a total length 

of 110 km, you can visit castle ruins and chapels along 

the high-altitude hiking trail. 

A highlight is the UNESCO World Heritage Cistercian 

Monastery Walkenried with its old monastery ruins. 

To get to know the diversity of nature in the southern Harz, 

we recommend the 25 km of signposted looped trails. 

You will discover small rest areas in the forest, wonderful 

views, and interesting information boards. 

The nature reserves of Priorteich/Sachsenstein and 

the gypsum and karst landscape are exciting for hikers, 

Nordic walkers and runners alike. 

The spa resort of Bad Sachsa has ten designated spa trails, 

each of which begins and ends at the Vitalpark. 

Promote your health while walking and hiking on 

these trails: the climate and the natural surroundings of 

the spa resort have a particularly positive effect on the 

cardiovascular system and the respiratory tract.

The spacious Vitalpark with walking paths, a water treadmill, 

a barefoot path, a multi-generation playground and 

the children‘s playground (redesigned in 2021) invites 

relaxation and daydreaming. 

The “Schmelzteich” pond is open to pedal boats in summer 

and ice skating in winter. It offers a stunning view of the 

valley opening beyond it and the surrounding tree- covered 

mountain slopes.

From Bad Sachsa, separate routes in the southern Harz 

are accessible and you have access to the “Volksbank- 

Arena-Harz” with 74 different routes in a 2,200 km 

route network. 

For leisurely cyclists, the “T3” themed looped cycle trail 

is particularly recommended. The trail runs for around 30 km 

through the karst landscape of the southern Harz and has 

both family-friendly and challenging sections. 

The GPS adventure hikes promise exciting excursions into 

the wilderness of the southern Harz. 

Nature and technology come together and reveal the coordinates 

to the most beautiful places in the region. 

The GPS adventure hikes can be booked at the Tourist

In summer Bad Sachsa and the entire Southern Harz offer 

water enthusiasts a variety of opportunities to “jump in”. 

In the middle of the nature reserve, halfway between Bad 

Sachsa and Walkenried, the “Priorteich” (lake) with its 

popular outdoor pool awaits - about 350 m long and up 

to 220 m wide. Parking is available at a car park on the 

country road approx. 500 m away. 

At certain points of the Prior pond fishing with a 

fishing license is also possible. 

In the solar-heated forest swimming pool in Zorge, 

guests of all ages get their money‘s worth. 

Whether in the children‘s pool with various water toys or 

jumping from the 1- and 3-meter towers into the swimmer‘s 

pool- fun for the whole family is guaranteed. Lounge chairs 

and parasols are available on site. 

In Ellrich, 8 km away, the second largest outdoor pool in 

Thuringia awaits visitors in the forest. 

WINTER DELIGHT

THE SNOW

The Bad Sachsa ski centre on the Ravensberg with a 

network of 4,400 m of downhill slopes is the ideal 

winter sports area for families with children. 

Fun can be had on various alpine skiing slopes and sledding 

chutes and - snow conditions permitting- prepared 

cross-country skiing tracks leading towards Wieda 

and Bad Lauterberg. 

Our tip: If the snow situation in the southern Harz is not 

sufficient and there are restrictions on lift operations - 

other winter sports centres in the Oberharz are close by! 

Hohegeiss, Torfhaus, Sankt Andreasberg and Braunlage are 

only a 30-minute drive away through the magnificent winter 

landscape on dependably well-cleared roads. The HATIX 

bus will even take you there free of charge. 

For those not keen on skiing, the southern Harz also offers 

a varied network of winter hiking trails, connecting 

the towns of Bad Sachsa, Wieda, Zorge and Walkenried. 

The train station “Stöberhai” can also be reached via a 

winter hiking trail. 

And last but not least, you can “throw a shape” on the ice 

rink in the „Salztal Paradies“- ice skate rental provided.

In autumn and winter, your dogs can frolic in the meadows 

and fields without a leash. 

In the nature reserves and in the Harz National Park there 

is a general obligation to keep a leash. This must be 

observed by dog owners throughout Lower Saxony from 

April 1st to July 15th.

On the hiking trail on the “Käseberg” in Wieda you will 

learn interesting facts about beekeeping, beneficial 

plants, the work of beekeepers and the end product: honey. 

Tables and benches in idyllic spots invite to linger. 

In the beautifully designed herb garden, you can experience 

nature with all your senses and at the same time find out 

about the herbs and their origin. The buzzing bees in the 

fragrant herb garden offer a unique natural spectacle. 

One of the oldest fairy tale parks in Germany is located 

on the “Katzenstein” (hill) in Bad Sachsa. In the newly 

designed fairytale house visitors are invited to play and 

read fairytales. In the witch‘s house, you can turn into your 

favourite fairy-tale characters with the beautiful costumes, 

and in the historic fairy-tale forest you can meet Snow White, 

the 7 dwarfs and the witch “Hillebille”- here you can even 

take a witch‘s diploma. 

Once a year, a very special fairy tale day takes place in 

Bad Sachsa. Absolutely worth experiencing! 

This is one of the most beautiful German falconry 

centres devoted to the protection, breeding and research 

of birds of prey. 

In the summer months visitors can experience daily impressive 

shows with eagles, owls, falcons, Bengal vultures 

and many other birds, on the Katzenstein in Bad Sachsa.

meant to be destroyed” – The children abducted 

and interned in Bad Sachsa in the aftermath of 

July 20, 1944 

The exhibition’s subject are the children whose fathers 

were murdered as so-called “traitors of the people” after 

the failed assassination attempt on Hitler. 

They were taken to the children‘s home „Bremen“ in August 

1944, where they were supposed to be given a new identity.

Documents and relics of the time of the partition of 

Germany are part of a variety of exhibitions and remind 

people of all generations of a special era in German history 

in a highly informative and captivating way. 

The permanent exhibition is structured according to historical 

processes. Guided tours by genuinely “borderline-experienced” 

staff make every visit to the museum special. 

The Local history and Winter sports Museum in Bad Sachsa 

documents the development of the town from a border 

and waggoner town and pretty traditional spa town with Art 

Nouveau architecture to today‘s spa resort. 

Another area is dedicated to winter sports on the Ravensberg 

and the history of sledging, from steered sleds to bobsleighs. 

The Historical Glass Museum in Steina shows the history 

of the forest glass works in the 16th and 17th century in 

the region. The Glass and Ironworks Museum in neighboring 

Wieda is also worth a visit. 

The guiding principle of the exhibition is “The Glass Trail”, 

going back to the time of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt. 

The spa climate of Bad Sachsa is not only appreciated by 

tourists but inspires artists as well. 

Numerous art studios, including well-known names such as 

LUDEWIG and TRAGICO, open their doors and take visitors 

away to unknown worlds. 

Exhibitions from other art domains are also always on offer.

The municipality of Walkenried includes the beautiful 

monastery of Walkenried, Wieda and the spa resort Zorge 

and is in the immediate vicinity of Bad Sachsa. During 

a holiday in the southern Harz a visit to the Walkenried 

monastery is a must! 

Walkenried, with the Walkenried Monastery, which was built 

by Cistercian monks and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 

is located on the river Wieda. 

The tourist information office and the UNESCO World 

Heritage information centre are located in the manor 

house next to the monastery. 

The Cistercian Monastery Museum Walkenried shows the 

history of the monastery up close and with media: monks 

moving from the Lower Rhine region settled in what 

later became Walkenried as early as 1129; their monastery 

church was sanctified in 1137. From 1200, economic 

success resulted in an immense increase in the ranks of 

the brothers. Around 100 monks and around 300 members 

of the monastery lived, prayed, and worked here during its 

heyday. In the middle of the 14th century the monastery got 

into economic difficulties due to the plague and the decline 

of the mining industry. The crisis culminated in the Peasants‘ 

War and the Reformation. Today only the ruins document the 

former dimensions of the monastery church. The monastic 

enclosure however is still largely preserved. 

The northern cloister with its unmistakable hall character 

is a trademark and unique architectural feature 

-it makes a visit to the Cistercian Monastery Museum 

in Walkenried a fascinating experience for the whole 

family.

the Nature Park Harz and belongs to the municipality of Walkenried. 

Northwest of Wieda rises the highest mountain in 

the southern Harz region, the Stöberhai (approx. 720 m). 

The church building in Wieda dates back from 1778 - at 

the same time the free-standing bell tower was built on 

the opposite “Käseberg”‚ (mountain), so the bells could be

DISCOVER THE WEALTH OF THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE IN THE HARZ 

The World Heritage Information Centre Walkenried - 

housed in a distinguished 19th Century building - conveys 

the extraordinary universal value of the World Heritage 

site in the Harz: more than 200 square kilometers in 

size, with artefacts above and below ground testifying to 

3,000- years of cultural history. 

The highlight is an impressive 3D landscape model that 

bundles the centuries-long interaction of nature, culture, 

and technology in a 7-minute film projection and shows the 

entire wealth of the world heritage in the Harz Mountains 

in an enticing way. 

The World Heritage sites in the immediate vicinity are also 

examined in more detail in the exhibition: the medieval Walkenried 

monastery complex opposite the information centre 

with the Cistercian Museum, the mine “Samson” 

in Sankt Andreasberg and the Oderteich (lake) in the 

middle of the Harz National Park.

Put together your individual itinerary of the World Heritage 

Sites at the Walkenried World Heritage Info Centre at a media 

terminal and take your own “roadmap” with you on your 

smartphone or in print. 

Visiting the information centre is free of charge. It has 

low -barrier- access and is only a three-minute walk 

from the museum car park. The Tourist Information 

Office for the community of Walkenried is located in 

the same building. 

THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE 

IN THE HARZ 

The world heritage site „Rammelsberg” mine, the old 

town centre of Goslar and “Oberharz Water Supply 

System“ with publicly accessible archaeological monuments 

and museum facilities extends over an area 

of over 200 square kilometers. It is one of the most 

multi- faceted world heritage sites in Germany. 

The once rich deposits of iron ore left a lasting mark 

on the region: the historical traces range from mining 

and water management facilities on the Rammelsberg 

and in the western and upper Harz Mountains to the 

secular architecture of the Imperial Palace in Goslar 

and the economic activities of the Walkenried Cistercian 

monastery. Changing landscapes, mining, energy 

production, architecture and urban development are 

the guiding themes of the world heritage. 

The Rammelsberg ore mine and the old town centre 

of Goslar were included in the UNESCO World Heritage 

List in 1992. In 2010 this world heritage site expanded 

to encompass the Oberharz Water Supply System - 

the unique pre-industrial energy supply system of the 

mining economy in the Oberharz.

The men of God used the power of water as early as the 

Middle Ages for their own mining industry and constructed 

reservoir and trench systems. While the ruins of the monastery 

church still document its former size and importance, 

its Gothic enclosure houses a uniquely captivating museum, 

the Cistercian Museum at Walkenried Monastery. 

Embark on a journey through time and learn about the 

life of the people of God behind high monastery walls, 

characterized by prayer and work, and explore how the 

monks thought and acted in the Middle Ages. Acoustic and 

visual installations as well as the focus on their extremely 

successful and large-scale business activities - comparable 

to a modern corporation - further increase the fascination 

of this almost 900-years-old place. 

Today‘s museum, which tells and honors this special story, 

is a place of discovery for all generations. Explore the Middle 

Ages by yourself with an audio guide – a special one for 

children is available – or on a guided tour. 

You can also immerse yourself in an atmosphere of stillness 

and seclusion on one of the candlelit tours of the 

Gothic cloister after dark.

This is just a small excerpt from our varied program of eventsin

WALPURGIS ON 30 APRIL 

When witches and devils are involved, it can only be about 

one thing - Walpurgis Night in the Harz Mountains. 

The Vitalpark Bad Sachsa is transformed into a fairy-tale 

cauldron of mythical creatures. 

Not only devils and witches meet here in the afternoon, 

but also many other fairy tale characters. These make the 

fairytale Walpurgis in Bad Sachsa a great event for all 

ages every year. 

You can experience a hell of a spectacle on Walpurgis 

Night in the spa park in Wieda and Zorge as well. 

LIGHT FESTIVAL IN JULY 

It is a magical evening when the Vitalpark Bad Sachsa 

shimmers with the light of hundreds of candles and is 

bathed in the sound of music. The unique professional 

spa park lighting creates a romantic and extraordinary 

atmosphere. 

Culinary delights sweeten the evening stroll through 

the sea of lights. The event is rounded off by a colourful 

entertainment program for all ages. 

FAIRY TALE DAY IN AUGUST 

The Fairy Tale Park opens its doors to magical worlds 

steeped in legends and myths. 

Surrounded by colourful balloons and sweet cotton candy, 

don’t be surprised to encounter princesses, witches 

and magicians.
