Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: We stuck to our own turf this week and grabbed lunch at 

Exit Zero Filling Station — we were just a bit too busy to venture out this 

week and who wants to pass up a Hot Chick sandwich? 

The server: Kevin has been a part of EZ since October when his 

friend and one of our bartenders, Bane, brought him in. This is his first 

gig as a server — he previously worked as a cook at Maui’s in Wildwood. 

It wasn’t long before the vibes meshed, and he was welcomed into the 

crew with open arms. “I really like working here,” he says. “It’s a great 

environment and it’s nice to work with a lot of happy people.” The food 

keeps him around, too — the Hot Chick is one of his favorite meals on 

or off the clock. Kevin is a great addition to the team, and you’d never 

know it was his first serving job... he’s a pro and the customers love him! 

The food: Kayla and Nicole ALWAYS take advantage of an opportunity 

to have lunch at the Filling Station. We opened at noon for Presidents’ 

Day, so it was finally our chance. Kayla went for her long-time 

favorite, the Hot Chick — you can see a pattern with this sandwich. 

Nicole enjoyed a chopper salad with chicken and after much arm-twisting 

(none at all if we’re being honest) Kayla agreed to split some cauliflower 

bites with sticky Thai sauce. It was her first time trying this sauce 

and it didn’t disappoint. We recommend a side of ranch with anything 

our sticky Thai sauce is on. 

The takeaway: Exit Zero Filling Station is open Mon-Fri from 3-9 

and Sat-Sun from 12-9. Enjoy live music weekends, often from everyone’s 

favorite columnist Terry O’Brien, and his rotating list of talented 

partners. Dine inside by the fireplace or take advantage of the ski lodges 

and trailers for private outdoor dining. They are all heated so no reason 

to worry about the temperature. They fit up to six people comfortably, 

so keep that in mind if you’re a larger party — you don’t want to

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence 

The best thing about this week’s column 

is that next one comes out in March, a 

month only slightly less terrible than 

January and February, despite the fact 

that it contains the birthday of a man 

many believe should be a national holiday. 

(It’s me.) Which reminds me (a week late, as 

always), my best girl had a birthday last week. 

I dare not say which lest she become my ex-best 

girl, but happy birthday, Cathrine O’Brien. She’s 

really beautiful and kinda good-looking, too. 

And Jackson O’Brien turned 19(!), but he’s 

been a real pill here lately, so… happy birthday, 

Jackson. I guess. (Just kidding, buddy. I love 

you, but I know you need the drama…) 

I write to you this week with the very mediocre 

film Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy playing in 

the background where, in case you’re wondering, 

I got my “so long and thanks for all the fish” 

sign-off at the end of my gigs. 

Well, I suppose I can’t go any further without 

addressing the elephant in the room. Perhaps a 

poor choice of words, but yes, that was me 

parading around Exit Zero Filling Station last 

weekend in a cupid costume. Or lack thereof. 

(To call it revealing would do a disservice to the 

meaning of the word revealing.) As ridiculous 

as I looked, I guarantee it was but a drop in the 

bucket compared to how ridiculous I felt. But, 

in a series of texts between myself and Exit 

Zero management, it seems I consented to do it 

(despite many, many warnings against putting 

me in a skimpy toga at dinner time) so I did it. I 

will, however, not be doing it again (unless I’m 

able to meet my 2022 weight loss goal which, 

let’s face it, I haven’t met in any year yet). Bad as 

it was, it would have been much worse had I not 

started my diet on Christmas and shed 15lbs. 

My acoustic partner for the weekend, Jerry 

Kolber, as I stood there 60% naked with all my 

most emotional bits hanging out, had to put on 

an oversized novelty tie with hearts on it. How 

embarrassing. It took a good 10 minutes after 

getting dressed in the office (and the promise of 

free, heavy drinking) to coax myself into going 

public. But everyone was kind and supportive 

(even if they didn’t mean it). Saturday went 

well; the place was buzzing and I was part of 

the background. But Monday was a little quieter 

and I was more of a focus. I felt like a stripper 

working the weekday afternoon shift. 

One silver lining — people seemed to tip 

based on my emotional well-being and we did 

great. I call this “Cringe Tipping.” I’d do it more 

often if I didn’t think I’d throw myself off a 

bridge. 

Apology of the Week: To Stefan and Melissa 

Axelsson, who made the cursed decision to 

spend Valentine’s Day at Exit Zero. Stefan is a 

hardworking fisherman whom I see about once 

every six months… and it just HAD to be last

In all, I’d say I displayed balls 

of steel. Literally. 

I’m just glad no pictures made 

it into the magazine. (There’s one 

standing right behind me, isn’t 

there…) 

Sophie (EZ bartender whose 

last name I don’t know), I’m sorry 

I forgot your name. But you were 

gone for two years and I barely 

remember the names of people 

I’ve known here for nearly three 

decades. Look on the bright side — 

you’ve joined a long and illustrious 

list of people I call Buddy, Ace or 

Chief. I call this “The Jim Faulkner 

List.” Pal. 

People like Chet Kennedy, 

who I memory-holed for a minute 

while dropping magazines at 

Nauti Spirits. Chet and his bride 

Krystina (EZ events guru) are 

expecting their first child in April, 

which is awesome. He says they’re 

just having the one. I said let’s hold 

off on that until you’ve held the first 

one for the first time. After that, all 

you want to do is make babies. 

Babies like Oban Ray Wright, 

spawn of Jack and Diane, who was 

giving me the real stink eye during 

dinner on Saturday. Lettle preck. 

One unexpected benefit of my 

phone being bricked was being 

unable to stream WXPN during 

delivery, so I kept it on 101.5 WCFA 

all morning. The 7am-8am hour 

was a bit of a slog (jazz standards, 

which are perfectly fine, just not 

my cup of tea), but at 8am they 

woke me up with “Can’t Hold On” 

by the mighty Squeeze, followed 

by “Harborcoat” by the greatest 

rock band America has ever 

produced, R.E.M. Come on! The 

odds of hearing one Squeeze song 

on any radio station anywhere is 

miniscule enough, but paired with 

an R.E.M. deep cut? It’s happened 

probably one other time in history 

on some college rock station 

in Maryland in 1987. As a bonus, 

on Saturday night during a music 

break I hopped in the car for a 

smoke (it was cold) and caught 

a really cool version of Squeeze’s 

“Another Nail In My Heart.” Kudos 

and more please!

with Jehovanny Nunez at Antojos 

this week. Yada yada yada. We’re 

probably hosting a podcast

of the Week: Walked into Cape 

Harbor Shell and Footer yells, 

“Yo, Terry, you’re looking pretty 

sculpted.” My spirits rose to previously 

unseen heights. “The beard 

looks good.” CRASH! (But thanks.) 

I offered a pre-apology to Don 

Brag at Cape Island Foods as I 

dropped off last week’s issue (in 

which I rib him a little), I guess I’ll 

know if he accepted it by whether 

or not I’m moving 1000s of bags of 

peanuts from one pile to another, 

Cool Hand Luke-style, all day at 

work on Monday. 

No, I do not appear in the 

recently released trailer for Hustle, 

starring Adam Sandler. And 

there’s about a .0000001% chance 

I’ll appear in the finished film. 

Unlike Parker Smith, who pops up 

in a party scene in the Sex & the 

City sequel and for whom I shall 

keep an eye sharply peeled while 

devouring the new season of The 

Marvelous Mrs Maisel.

All boats rise with the tide, but when 

will all people get an equal chance? 

Fulfilling jobs? Home ownership? 

Peaceful neighborhoods? In the television 

series, All Rise, these topics are 

explored with a great big helping of court room 

and behind-the-scenes drama. 

Does anyone remember L.A. Law the NBC 

legal drama? Some of its famous alumni are 

Blair Underwood and Jimmy Smits. I loved 

it when it started in the mid-80s. There was 

court scene after court scene. I can’t tell you 

when, but somewhere in the early 90s it turned 

too behind-the-scenes with relationships and 

breakups and all that. I turned it off. 

This is why I’m surprised that I like All Rise 

so much. The personal relationships are baked 

right into the courtroom drama. Love a good 

trial showdown! All Rise goes beyond courtroom 

antics to talk behind the scenes about the 

preparation, the lost videos, the personalities. 

This is where the relationships are part of the 

legal process. 

All Rise goes even one better than that. 

The Movie Column

After a compelling first season, it’s looking 

like it will run a second. Then the pandemic 

hit. Talk about leaning in, they go right for pandemic 

themes from online trials to a scene that 

has our main character, Judge Lola Carmichael, 

in the middle of a Black Lives Matter protest. 

Lola (played by Simone Missick) is a black 

woman newly appointed as a judge in the Los 

Angeles court system. She tries to be fair to 

anyone who appears in her court. Her consid- 

erations of justice are level handed. Although 

making some mistakes along the way, she 

is sure-footed and singularly focused on the 

administration of her duties. 

Since watching All Rise, I’ve received a 

deeper understanding of how the justice system 

works (in some cases doesn’t work) and 

the judge’s role — and even when that’s overextended. 

The personal stories are a part of 

the courtroom action. I’m guessing that’s what 

L.A. Law lacked. Instead of weaving the personal 

into the legal storylines, it seemed like 

they ran the relationship issues because they 

were running out of other ideas. 

All Rise originally aired on CBS, and it 

now streams on Hulu. It’s got a mid-50s 

score on Rotten Tomatoes but a “top critics” 

score of 87% on the same service. After two 

strong seasons, CBS did not renew the show 

after a real-life drama with its creator. It was 

announced last week that the third season 

starts on The Oprah Winfrey Network in June. 

Looking forward to good drama in and out of 

court.

One of the greatest changes to New 

Jersey’s birdscape has been the 

proliferation of Cooper’s Hawks, a 

crow-sized generalist as adept at 

catching chipmunks as Mourning 

Doves. Once dubbed the “chicken hawk,” 

Cooper’s Hawks are mistakenly thought of as 

forest raptors. They are more nearly birds of 

broken forest and forest edge like the smaller 

but similarly plumaged Sharp-shinned 

Hawk. Once less numerous than the Sharpshinned, 

in recent times, Cooper’s Hawks 

can out-number Sharpies at the Cape May 

hawk watch. Thousands of articles have been 

written about separating Sharp-shinneds and 

Cooper’s in the field. I’ve been guilty of one or 

twelve myself so feel no compulsion to turn 

this soil over again. 

One helpful tip will suffice. If you have a 

“blue darter” haunting your bird feeder. The 

Sharp-shinned will be the one hammering 

your chickadees. Cooper’s Hawks target doves 

and pigeons. Indeed, John James Audubon 

knew the bird as the “Great Pigeon Hawk” 

and allowed that flocks of Passenger Pigeons 

would show great agitation if one were in the 

area. No Passenger Pigeon has been killed by 

a Cooper’s Hawk in over a century. In modern 

times Cooper’s Hawks find the Rock Pigeon 

a fine substitute, one that has led Cooper’s 

Hawks to establish themselves in urban areas. 

Even if you don’t see Cooper’s Hawks 

at your feeder, you can see their handiwork: 

little ferry rings of plucked feathers beneath 

the feeder. Sharp-shinneds tend to fly away 

with prey and pluck prey from some concealed 

and elevated perch. Sharp-shinneds, 

you see, fall within the prey range of Cooper’s 

Hawk. We often start the winter with both 

a Sharp-shinned and at least one Cooper’s 

Hawk working our feeder. By January there is 

nothing but Coops. Coops nest in our town 

and yours, too. I’ll wager there isn’t a suburban 

wood lot in New Jersey that does not host 

a nesting Cooper’s Hawk. They like conifers 

and I have seen their stick nests beside the 

trail at Cape May Point State Park and in 

isolated trees flanking city streets that in subsequent 

years may serve as a nest for Merlins. 

Falcons don’t build nests and the feisty 

Merlin is also making inroads into urban 

places as is the larger Peregrine (falcon). So, 

there you have it, the hawk next door. Yes, Mr. 

Mrs. Suburban dweller, you can wall yourself 

in but you can’t wall Ma Nature out. Do 

Cooper’s Hawks pose a danger? No. Unless 

you do something stupid like poke your nose 

into the face of a brooding female on her nest.

The signs of spring are here. Snowdrops 

live up to their name, nodding their 

little heads against piles of lingering 

snow. A clump of purple crocus 

brightens a brown garden. You can 

almost hear the sap flowing in the trees, and 

your human body also wants to get moving. 

It’s almost baseball season. 

October has the excitement, and June 

has the weather, but don’t be fooled – these 

are the days made for baseball, and baseball-like 

games. Though a labor dispute has 

the Grapefruit League on hold for professionals, 

we amateurs are eager to get outside to 

play. This time of year is fun no matter your 

age or ability. People gather to play catch, 

throwing gently to warm up. Grandparents 

are pitching to high schoolers just so they can 

swing their bats. Little leaguers are pointing 

t-ballers in the right direction. You dig out last 

season’s equipment and remember the highlights; 

the times your throw landed solidly 

in your teammate’s glove, or your hit sailed 

above your opponent’s. Hope springs eter- 

nal, demanding that you forget the bad plays. 

These winter warmups are the days when the 

pitcher basically aims for your bat, so you can 

all remember what it feels like to swing and 

run the bases. No one is keeping score yet. In 

a few weeks, skill and fitness will matter, but 

in February, we are all stars. 

It’s also a great time to be inspired by the 

actual all stars of baseball. Visit the Carroll 

Gallery of the Emlen Physick Estate for “A 

Diamond of Their Own: The Remarkable 

History of the Negro Leagues as portrayed by 

artist Sydnei SmithJordan.” Presented by Cape 

May MAC and Center for Community Arts, 

this exhibit “features original artwork created 

by SmithJordan and artist Chanelle René, that 

celebrates the indomitable spirit and talent of 

the men and women who played for the Negro 

Leagues.” Picture yourself at home plate, 

ready to hit a home run, or celebrating success 

with your teammate, and consider that no 

skill level would earn you a spot in the Major 

Leagues. You confront the shame of segregation 

as you celebrate the joy of the sport. 

This juxtaposition is awkward, and therefore, 

educational. The memorabilia of the early 

days of the Negro Leagues comes courtesy of 

the Center for Community Arts, The Dempsey 

family, Mark Kulkowitz, SmithJordan, and 

Janis Washington White. Admission is free. 

The Carroll Gallery is located in the Carriage 

House, on the grounds of the Physick Estate, 

1048 Washington Street. It is wheelchair

I felt I was drinking too much, which started 

during COVID. I did not feel well and was 

tired of being in a fog. I feel so much better and 

have no regrets save one. My co-workers and I 

often would go out on Thursday nights to the 

Ugly Mug for drinks and burgers. Now that I 

don’t drink, they don’t include me anymore. 

Well, they do but the invitation is “I know you 

don’t drink, but if you feel like hanging out, you 

know where we’ll be.” I feel like a Narc. Should 

I ignore this and go anyway or say something?

I work in a real estate office. There are 

about six of us at any given time. Pre-COVID, 

the office ran in a very professional manner. 

When we started coming back into the office 

one co-worker started bringing in her pit bull. 

Since she was only in the office a couple of 

hours no one said anything. Now we are back 

to full hours and the pit bull is still one of us. 

The office manager doesn’t mind “as long as 

he behaves.” But I do. I am not a dog person, I 

think it is unprofessional and clients should 

not have to deal with a big dog glaring at them. 

I seem to be the only one who is bothered by 

this. What to do? — Agitated 

Dear Agitated 

You are clearly in the minority here. This 

is your manager’s call, and your best bet is to 

make the most of it. No one is asking you to dog 

sit, so just go about your business as though 

Mr. Pit Bull is not there. We would suggest 

a nice chai tea from Coffee Tyme to help you 

learn to accept the things you cannot change.

ZEUS is a handsome year-and-a-half-old 

boy who came to the shelter when his owners 

could no longer care for him. He has a lot of 

energy and needs gentle training and handling. 

His leash skills are improving and at this 

point in his training, should be the only pet in 

the home. Zeus will be a wonderful companion 

for an active family with breed experience. 

PONGO is a senior boy who came to the shelter 

as a stray. He has warmed up to staff and 

volunteers and is ready for a new home. Pongo 

has a lot of energy and walks well on a leash. 

He needs a slow introduction to other animals 

but would be good in a home with other dogs 

and cats. Pongo will still need his space but 

will make a wonderful companion.
