AUCKLAND PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA
The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
(APO) is New Zealand’s designated
metropolitan orchestra, serving
Auckland, the country’s largest and most
vibrant city, with concerts and events
throughout the year.
The APO presents more than 60
performances annually. A comprehensive
season of symphonic work brings
Auckland’s orchestra together with
many of the world’s finest classical
musicians, while collaborations with
some of New Zealand’s most exciting
contemporary artists speaks to the APO’s
reputation of being endlessly innovative,
passionate and versatile.
Internationally acclaimed Italian-Danish
conductor Giordano Bellincampi has been
Music Director of the APO since 2016.
Beloved by APO musicians, audiences
and donors alike, his tenure has resulted
in a period of significant artistic growth for
Auckland’s orchestra.
Recent guest artists with the orchestra
have included tenor Simon O’Neill,
pianist Michael Houstoun, violinists
Arabella Steinbacher, Ning Feng and
Viktoria Mullova, cellist Julian Steckel,
pipa virtuoso Wu Man, and conductors
Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bertrand de Billy,
and Xian Zhang.
In 2022, the APO presents a wideranging
and dynamic season featuring
many of Aotearoa’s best talents alongside
debuts and welcome returns of many
renowned international musicians.
The exceptional guest artists sharing the
stage with the APO this year include
violinists Clara-Jumi Kang and James
Ehnes, pianists Kristian Bezuidenhout,
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, and Benjamin
Grosvenor, trumpeter Tine Thing
Helseth, and conductors Gilbert Varga,
Shiyeon Sung and Alpesh Chauhan.
Complementing our international artists,
we are also delighted to showcase
New Zealand-born violinist Amalia Hall,
conductor Tianyi Lu, and APO’s own
Principal Clarinettist Jonathan Cohen
and Principal Harpist Ingrid Bauer
among many more.
The APO is proud to support both
New Zealand Opera and the Royal
New Zealand Ballet in their Auckland
performances. It also works in
partnership with Auckland Arts Festival,
the Auckland Pride Festival, the New
Zealand International Film Festival and
the Australian National Academy of Music
among other organisations.
Through its numerous APO Connecting
(education, outreach and community)
initiatives, the APO offers opportunities
to more than 20,000 young people
and adults nationwide.
Each year the APO performs to
more than 250,000 people live and
over the course of the pandemic, has
reached more than 4.3 million viewers
globally through livestreams and other
digital offerings.

The last two years have been quite
the roller-coaster. Live performance
has been repeatedly disrupted, and
the APO has not escaped unscathed.
Despite this, we have planned
ambitiously and optimistically for
2022. Be it online, on the radio, or
in the concert hall, we are excited to
reconnect with our devoted music
community for a Bayleys Great Classics
series like no other.
This year’s series covers celebrated
favourites by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Borodin,
Dvořák, Fauré, Lilburn and more, brought to
life by an outstanding line-up of international
artists as well as some of New Zealand’s
best talents. This includes our own Principal
Clarinettist Jonathan Cohen, who opens the
season in February.
A significant ingredient of the APO’s
artistic success is the generous support

CONDUCTOR
Giordano Bellincampi is the Music Director
of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
Born in Italy and moving to Copenhagen
at a young age, he began his career as a
trombonist with the Royal Danish Orchestra
before making his professional conducting
debut in 1994.
Previous positions include Principal
Conductor of I Pomeriggi Musicali (Milan),
Music Director of the Duisburg Philharmonic
(2012-2017), Music Director of the Danish
National Opera, Aarhus (2005-2013)
and Music Director of the Copenhagen
Philharmonic Orchestra (2000-2006). From
1997-2000 he was also Chief Conductor
of the Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen,
the leading contemporary music ensemble
in Denmark.
Highlights of recent seasons have
included gala performances of Wagner’s
operatic and orchestral music with the
Duisburg Philharmonic, as well as a strongly
acclaimed visit to Amsterdam’s legendary
Concertgebouw Hall, performing repertoire
by Nielsen, Sibelius and Beethoven.
As Associate Professor at the Royal
Danish Academy, he also regularly gives
masterclasses and judges international
conducting competitions.
In 2010, he was created a Knight of the
Order of the Dannebrog, an award bestowed
by the Danish Royal Family for services to
Danish culture, and he also holds the title of
Cavaliere from the President of Italy.

JOHNATHAN COHEN
CLARINET
Jonathan Cohen joined the Auckland
Philharmonia Orchestra as Principal Clarinet
in 2020. A third generation clarinettist,
Jonathan was born in New Orleans,
Louisiana. He has performed as soloist
with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra,
the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, the
Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, and the
Minnesota Orchestra.
After finishing his Master of Music degree
from Juilliard, Jonathan went on to play with
the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for three
seasons. His summer festival performances
include appearances at the Mostly Mozart,
Ravinia, Sunflower, Buzzard’s Bay, Naumburg
Summer Series, and Minnesota Beethoven
festivals among others. He has recorded with
the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Knights
Chamber Orchestra under the Naxos and
Warner Classics Labels.
Jonathan has also appeared as a guest
member with the Orpheus Chamber
Orchestra, the Virginia Symphony, the
Knights Chamber Orchestra, International
Contemporary Ensemble, Bavarian Radio
Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Cincinnati
Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and
the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. An avid
educator as well, Jonathan maintained a
private studio in Minnesota and continues to
teach in New Zealand and the United States.
Jonathan’s major teachers have been
Steve Cohen, Nathan Williams, Yehuda
Gilad, Mark Nuccio, and Anthony McGill. He
holds degrees from the Manhattan School of
Music and The Juilliard School.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
The Abduction from the Seraglio:
Overture
ONE SINGLE MOVEMENT

Called ‘the pedestal upon which his fame
was erected’ in his obituary, Mozart’s
opera The Abduction from the Seraglio
was a turning point for him. No longer a
wunderkind whose career was managed
by his father, Mozart’s move to Vienna in
1781 was an assertion of his musical and
personal independence. The success of this
German-language singspiel allowed him to
set himself up as an independent composer
and performer, to get married and establish
his family.
The Abduction from the Seraglio rode
high on the wave of enthusiasm across
Western Europe for music ‘alla turca’ – in
the Turkish style. ‘Alla turca’ wasn’t so much
an authentic borrowing of Turkish music
as a coded set of musical cues created
by (mostly Austrian) composers to evoke
a culture they perceived as ‘other’. The
overture is a splendid example of these
techniques – the opening allegro is lavishly
embellished with triangle and cymbals,
instruments that were guests rather than
regular members of the Viennese court
orchestra, evoking Turkish Janissary bands.
Repeated note motifs, scale runs and
sudden changes in dynamics all reference
the military function of the Janissary bands.
Within just over a decade the opera had
been translated into multiple languages and
carried Mozart’s fame (and his alla turca
style) throughout Europe.

Symphony No.38 ‘Prague’

Touring formed a critical part of Mozart’s
career throughout his life. Young Wolfgang
and his sister Nannerl performed at courts
throughout England, France, Germany and
Austria as child prodigies. At the age of
22 his brief residency in Paris (although
ill-fated personally with the death of his
mother) artistically produced the Paris
Symphony, one of his most popular works at
that time and the first of his symphonies to
be published.
Therefore, when touring to Prague eight
years later, Mozart hoped to replicate his
earlier success by composing something
for this city as well. In some accounts, his
first thought was to take the popular Paris
Symphony, and add a unique finale. This
finale opens with a brief self-quotation of
The Marriage of Figaro, the production
which was Mozart’s primary purpose for
visiting Prague. However, having finished the
sprightly rondo movement, he broadened the
scope of his idea and created the opening
movements, resulting in an entirely new
symphony, known as the ‘Prague’ symphony.
The full-bodied lyrical second movement
is embraced by the first movement, where
an opening adagio, all ceremony and drama,
leads into a brilliant allegro. Here Mozart
explores the capacity of the orchestra to
dialogue within itself without losing the
clear lines and textures that characterise
his music.

CONTRASTING SECTIONS

Carl Nielsen’s career spanned a period
of brutal change for classical music, from
the lush late-romanticism of Mahler and
Tchaikovsky to the sharp-edged modernism
of the post-war world heard in the music
of Schoenberg, Poulenc and Prokofiev.
Both of these forces are present in his
Clarinet Concerto, composed in the last
years of his life in 1928.
Intensely lyrical clarinet melodies soar
over currents of unease in the orchestra,
disintegrating and then cohering together
again. The orchestra and soloist are at times
partners and at other times are positioned as
separate, even antagonistic characters in an
unfolding drama.
The snare drum plays a critical role
throughout the concerto, often functioning as
an audible trigger for a change or reaction:
at its first entry it startles the soloist into a
rapid burst of notes before the orchestra
restores equilibrium.
Transitioning seamlessly from one section
to the next, the orchestra and soloist finally
reach repose with a fade to black at the
end of the work.

Dvořák‘s first set of Slavonic Dances caused
‘a positive assault on the sheet music shops’
when they appeared in 1878 for piano duet,
launching him into the public consciousness
across the musical capitals of Europe.
Orchestrated within the same year, their
vibrant rhythms and characteristic dance
forms were such a hit for the publisher that
Dvořák was able to use the promise of a
second set as a bargaining chip for the
publication of his Seventh Symphony.
Dvořák grounded his writing in the Czech
dance structures that formed a significant
part of his early musical upbringing, playing
in the village band and later working in a
dance band as a violist.
The Polka was hugely popular in the
mid-19th century and Dvořák’s A-flat major
Polka perfectly captures the fun, social
aspect of this duple-time round-dance.
By contrast, the Dumka movements are
characterised by pensive rumination suited
to their origins as sung laments.
We hear the cadence of the Czech
language too, in the Furiant which closes
tonight’s selection, relentlessly starting every
phrase on the down beat. Connoisseurs of
Dvořák‘s music might notice the similarity to
his Sixth Symphony which has a furiant as
its third movement, with the characteristic
misplaced accents in the first bars giving
way to triple time.

– Join the APO Friends
The Friends of the APO are an integral part
of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
family. Founded in 1981, the Friends help
the orchestra in a variety of ways including
selling programmes at concerts and providing
suppers for guest artists and the orchestra.
Funds raised from Friends events, subscriptions
and raffles are donated to support the APO
Connecting programme. Membership to
the Friends is open to all. Annual dues are a
modest $35 per person and benefits include
newsletters, invitations to monthly Meet the
Artist mornings and, most of all, the satisfaction
of knowing that your contribution helps support
an essential element of Auckland’s cultural life.
