A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA
BOARD
With March upon us, many look forward to winter’s finale,
and to the renewal that arrives with longer days, comfortable
temperatures, and increased sunshine. It is encouraging that
the birth flower for March is a happy daffodil. The birthstone,
aquamarine, symbolizes courage, something everyone
showed much of over the last several years!
Exciting things continue to happen at the GWSA. As
capacity limits return to normal, we can include more
members in activities. Check out the online calendar for the
latest programs. You can sign up for your favourites in
RecEnroll and maybe try something new.
For April, the Travel Committee has two trips planned, one
to Cirque du Soleil, and another which is somewhat of a
Mystery Tour. Remember to register for trips while they are
available and before the cut-off dates. By the way, the Travel
Committee is looking for more people to help plan and lead
trips, so let them know if you would like to get involved.
The GWSA could benefit from an injection of new
members after several shutdowns, so we encourage you to
bring your friends by the Evergreen Centre to promote
everything available. GWSA membership remains one of the
best bargains around. Since the Bistro 683 Restaurant is open
to the public, coffee or a hot meal might be an inviting place
to start a tour!
The Technology Committee is coming together nicely.
Thanks to a New Horizons for Seniors Grant, we have
acquired some new computers, twelve large monitors, and a
new printer and data projector. The Technology Centre space
has been reconfigured to provide a separate area for videorecording
and livestreaming. Because the diverse team of
experts is tackling ‘all things tech’, they are overseeing Wi-Fi
and lighting systems, and have already addressed needed
improvements for reliability of the auditorium sound system.
Look for some new opportunities to sign up for their
computer classes.
You may be interested to know that the GWSA is a
member of the Guelph Chamber of Commerce, which should
help forward the association’s Strategic Planning priorities,
while promoting networking, funding and advocacy for the
seniors we serve. Raising awareness of the GWSA and its
services is something that will benefit us all.
Be Active. Get involved. Make friends! We look forward to
seeing you soon.
THE EDITOR’S PAGE
by Linda Green
The Month of March
March is named for the Roman god of war, Mars.
This was the time of year to resume military
campaigns that had been interrupted by winter.
In the early Roman calendar, March (or Martius)
was the first month of the calendar year. As March
brought the first day of spring with the vernal
equinox, it was the start of new beginnings.
March became the third month when January and
February, which were added to the end of the Roman
calendar around 700 BCE, instead became the first
and second months around 450 BCE.
March 1 is Mardi Gras (aka “Fat Tuesday” or
Shrove Tuesday), which is the final feasting day
before the Christian tradition of Lent begins on the
following day, Ash Wednesday (March 2, 2022).
March 8 is International Women’s Day, which is
a day that not only celebrates the achievements of
women and the progress made toward women’s
rights, but also brings attention to ongoing struggles
for equality around the world.
March 13 is the start of Daylight Saving Time,
which begins at 2:00 a.m. that day. Don’t forget to
“spring forward” and set the clocks one hour ahead,
or you may find yourself an hour late to everything!
March 15 is Clean Monday. Also called Pure
Monday, this day marks the beginning of Great Lent
for followers of the Eastern Orthodox Christian
Church. This day is similar to Ash Wednesday of the
Western Church.
March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day. According to
folklore, folks wear a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day
because the saint used its three leaves to explain
the Trinity.
March 20 brings about the March equinox — also
called the vernal or spring equinox in the Northern
Hemisphere, marking the beginning of spring. On
this day, the sun stands directly over Earth’s equator.
In Like a Leo, Out Like an Aries
You may have heard the weather proverb, “If
March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a
lamb,” which means that if the month starts off
stormy, it will end with mild weather. There is,
however, a different interpretation: The constellation
Leo, the lion, rises in the east at the beginning of
March and thus the month “comes in like a lion,”
while Aries, the ram, sets in the west at the end of the
month, and hence, the month “will go out like
a lamb.”
COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES: UPDATE
Community Support Services (CSS) is a valued part of the GWSA, and depends on available
funding sources, primarily grants, for continued operation. These programs evolve over time to
address changing community priorities that are often determined by the agencies involved. The
GWSA devotes considerable time each year to sourcing available grants and to submitting
applications that will best serve our GWSA members and the CSS clients.
For the next United Way funding cycle, the GWSA submitted letters of intent for all of our CSS
Programs. The United Way received an unusually large number of requests for funds, and we were
invited to submit applications for all CSS programs except for the Move Well program.
The GWSA has thus far been unsuccessful in securing the additional funding necessary to
continue the Move Well program beyond March 31, 2022. As a result, and with respect for
providing appropriate notice, we made the painful decision to inform Margaret Iutzi, the Move Well
Co-ordinator that, without further funds, we will not be able to renew her contract at that time.
As with all of CSS, we greatly appreciate Margaret’s service to seniors in the community and we
will continue to explore possibilities for the services going forward. We greatly appreciate
Margaret’s eleven years of service.
Over the course of the pandemic as seniors became more isolated, our Outreach Program Co-ordinator for
Community Support Services, Paula Frappier, connected with OACAO (Older Adult Centres’ Association
of Ontario) and took webinars about how to run a social/recreational program “without walls”.
As a result of that training, we now use a conference call system to bring seniors together on a weekly
basis. Groups are held on the same day of the week and at the same time. The conference call is a toll-free
call and always uses the same access code. This way, the seniors participating become familiar and
comfortable with the numbers used.
The phone was selected as the virtual platform of choice because many of the individuals we reach out to
often do not own computers, and others are just more comfortable talking on the telephone.
One of the participants said it is now a familiar routine for her and she can do it independently. She
doesn’t have to ask her partner or son to help her to connect to the group.
The weekly call is facilitated and organized so that only one participant talks at a time and that everyone
gets a chance to share and to listen. The socialization gives participants something to look forward to every
week while, at the same time, staying safe and well.
Previous topics have included meditation and relaxation tips, story tellers from the local guild, advice
from the collective seniors, (e.g., best way to....), reflections and reminiscence (e.g., your favourite candy as
a child or your most interesting job), or just checking in and sharing ideas on how to cope with the
isolation.
Only last week, one participant said, “If I’ve been in the wrong state of mind, the group helps turn me
around. You make my week – if I don’t attend, I feel like something is missing.”
allow 3 free visits to give you a
chance to discover if you are able
and will enjoy this very active
sport. The yearly fee is $60.00 and
you must have an up-to-date membership
with GWSA to be a member
of our club.
For further information regarding
Bunka
Bunka embroidery is created by
using a unique combination of
punch needle and special silk-like
rayon thread. When completed,
many pictures resemble delicately
shaded paintings. In fact, the needle
is held and operates in much the
same manner as an artist’s brush or
pencil. The Bunka artist uses many
different stitch techniques in order
to achieve the desired effect of
depth and interest, but unlike other
forms of needle art, there are no
knots to tie and mistakes are easily
corrected. This group is for all skill
levels and meets every Wednesday
from 9:15 a.m. to noon in Room 3.
We do carving in the round, like
spoons, bowls, etc.
Other carving techniques include
Pickleball
Pickleball is a sport in which four
players use solid paddles made of
wood or composite materials to hit
a perforated polymer ball over a
net. The sport shares features of
other racquet sports: the dimensions
and layout of a badminton court
and a net and rules similar to tennis,
with a few modifications.
This sport is for people of all ages
who are looking for some fun,
laughter, socialization and exercise.
It’s easy to learn, but can be challenging
for those with a competitive
nature. All levels of skill invited.
Pickleball equipment is provided.
Shuffleboard
Come on out and join our group.
Enjoy some gentle exercise, friendship
and fun. Membership is available
to all paid-up GWSA members
for a $10 fee every six months.
Register the first time you play. Beginners
are welcome and instruction
is available. The group plays
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from
1:30 to 3 p.m.
Silver Strummers
The ukulele orchestra is an unqualified
success story! There are
now 30 individuals who have
joined the Silver Strummers. We
welcome ALL skill levels, beginner
through advanced! We will provide
you with all the information you
will need to get started. If you
would like to try the universally
accessible and friendly instrument
of the ukulele, please contact Ann
Sneyd at 519-830-6640.
Silvertones
The Silvertones Choir restarted
their bi-weekly in-person practices
on February 4th in the GWSA Auditorium.
Our bi-weekly practices
run from 1 to 4 pm and we hope to
return to our old Room 3 when the
numbers say it is safe to do so. We
are pleased to have a new Accompanist
join us, which is a great relief
to all and especially to our Director
who had been both Director
and Accompanist for 2 years!
Our Director, Anne Sneyd, has
come up with a new list of
songs, old and new that the Choir
will present on June 10th of this
year. This day will be a combination
Open House and Silvertones
40th Anniversary party (initially
planned for 2021)!! So, SAVE
THE DATE EVERYONE, you
will not be disappointed!
Watch for:
“Seriously? Seniors?”
This is YOUR GWSA today.
Please contact Doreen Muir 519 -
831-8323 if you are interested in
joining our Choir.
Evergreen Snooker Club
The Evergreen Snooker Club is
composed of a group of active,
friendly players with skill levels
covering the full spectrum from
learner/beginner to accomplished
player. If you are interested in
learning the game, or have played
in the past and want to get back into
it, please drop by the Snooker
Room. You will be assured a warm
welcome and a place to try your
hand at one of our three tables. The
Snooker Room is open weekdays
between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm and
any other time the Evergreen Centre
may be open.
The primary focus of the club is
to have fun, build friendships and
socialize. Your snooker skill level
is irrelevant, so don’t feel intimidated
if you are a beginner. Prospective
members may visit the club
room up to three times without
charge to help with their decision
on whether to join. While most of
the current members are men, there
is a small group of women who
play regularly (typically on Tuesday
mornings), so ladies, don’t be
shy, give it a try.
Membership is available to all
paid-up members of the GWSA on
payment of the prescribed annual
snooker activity fee. The current
fee of $70 (plus tax) buys you access
to the Snooker Room any time
13
it is open and to all the snooker you
care to play.
Texas Hold ’Em
(The Three Amigos)
Why not come out and have fun
with us? We are averaging about 16
players a week. We are situated in
the Dining Room. We charge $2
per week and pretty well all of that
goes back to the GWSA. We play
Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.
Each player starts off with $500
in real casino chips, and, as we do
not play for money, we work on a
point system. The one with the
most points each week is the winner.
We play until there is only one
player left or 8:30 pm comes,
whichever is first.
We will gladly teach anyone who
is interested in playing. Just follow
the laughter to find us. We welcome
everyone who wants to play
and enjoys company.
We have quite a few ladies playing
at present and would always
welcome more; we do not want to
become a men’s club! Remember,
you have to be a member of the
GWSA to play.
Thank you to Mike Rooke for his
excellent leadership for many
years!
Watercolour Painters
The Evergreen Watercolour Painters
provide an opportunity for watercolour
painters to practise their
hobby along with others sharing the
same interest, while encouraging
one another and receiving information,
ideas and inspiration.
While we do not offer classes or
lessons, we welcome accomplished
watercolour painters. There is a
small annual membership fee and
membership with the GWSA is required.
We meet in Room 2 from
12:30 to 4 p.m. on the 1st and 5th
Wednesday of the month, and from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the third
Wednesday.
A VIEW FROM THE BOOK NOOK
Chris Fraser
The Book Nook — “A Lending Library”
We are now re-opened
Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
****
I have another great book I think many of you will
enjoy reading: “High Stakes” by Iris Johansen.
Logan Tanner is a professional gambler who owns
many casinos. However, Tanner is also an extractor
and is soon approached by Kaskov, a Russian mob
boss, to extract Lara and her mother out of Russia.
Lara’s life is in danger from not only her father, but
from Volkov, a dangerous mafia mob boss.
Kaskov agrees to find out information about a
missing friend of Tanner’s if he will agree to get Lara
and her mother away to safety. Tanner and his team
head to Russia and, with two teams in place, they
jointly manage to get them both out. Volkov is
furious and will go to any lengths to get his prize
possession back.
Tanner takes them back to the States, where he has
a house up in the mountains that he believes they will
be safe in until he gets them to Kaskov.
Soon Volkov traces the plane they disappeared in
and, since he is also a gambler, he heads to Las
Vegas where he believes Tanner will take Lara.
Lara has led a very secluded life, learning to defend
herself at all times, and Tanner begins to show her
there is a better life ahead for her.
Once they learn Volkov is in Vegas, Lara knows
it’s only a matter of time before he finds them.
Tanner must keep one step ahead of him all the time.
This is a very exciting book, which you will not
want to put down. I hope you enjoy reading it as
much as I did.
Happy Reading,
A VOLUNTEER’S EXPERIENCE – GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
As my wife and I approached our senior years, and began to think about retirement, we thought we
might move from our small town north of Guelph into Guelph itself. My wife was working at a medical
clinic there, and the City seemed very friendly. We wanted a transit system for when we could
no longer drive, lots of grocery stores, and a shopping mall for winter walking. So we bought a small
bungalow in the north of Guelph.
After we had been retired a couple of years, one day my wife brought home a magazine from the
Guelph Library called ‘The Sentinel’. In it was an ad for a Canoe Club that would be starting at the
local seniors centre.
Since my wife knew I was looking to get back to the outdoors, I was encouraged to join.
Fast forward to the end of that summer of 2009 and four of us were sitting around in September
wanting to make our little 10 member friendly group an official Club. The other three piped up, and
at the end of it, I was left with the position of President of the just newly formed Evergreen Canoe
Club.
As the years went by, our little Club grew and even received an unheard of two separate grants
from the Federal Government to purchase our own canoes and trailers. This put our little Club front
and centre of members of GWSA and, with a good shock of snow white hair and beard, I was very
visible and well known. A lot more people knew me than I knew.
A few years ago, some positions came open on the Board. Several of the people that knew me, but
I did not know, encouraged me to submit my name as a Director on the Board, and I was duly elected.
I had never done anything like this. I was a sales guy of technical things.
But I have found that all one needs to be a contributing member to an organization like the GWSA
is the ability to listen, consider all points of view, make a judgement call, and vote in a way that best
supports the future success of the organization.
The time commitment consists of one meeting a month lasting approximately two hours, and bit of
extra time making sure you are well versed about the upcoming agenda topics.
I would have to say that this experience is right up there with the two or three other ‘once in a lifetime’
experiences I have had that offered the best chance for me to grow and become a better person,
meeting many interesting people, along with having lots of fun during some interesting situations.
