Letter 

How we’ve been longing for the natural oomph spring 

brings. And with colourful spring blooms and 

cheery daffodils popping up all over gardens and on 

supermarket and florists shelves, this time of year always gives 

me the motivation to crack on with a house project or two. 

It’s been lots of fun researching this issue’s Interiors 

Supplement – especially tracking down a mix of brand new 

and upcycled credenzas and sideboards, something I’m longing 

for in my new home. Rebecca Cuffe has worked her usual 

editing magic to put together her take on the newest and 

coolest adornments for your home. Read on after page 84. 

Our photoshoots this month are also design-led with a 

look inside the home of the founder of Huddle Collection, 

Sarah Hazebroek, whose brand new home accessories brand 

was developed during the long months of lockdown. See 

how she brought colour and joy to isolation from page 68

transformed my life 

Assisted living has been a 

popular lifestyle choice for 

many years, and it’s not 

hard to see why. Security, 

freedom, new friends and 

a fresh start are all enticing reasons to 

make the move. Although it can be a little 

daunting, there are numerous reasons why 

living in a self-contained assisted living 

apartment is such a positive experience for 

so many. 

Not as mobile as he once had been, 

Bill was delighted when one of the 

Birchgrove retirement advisors took 

Birchgrove to him… 

“I was living alone in Kingston during 

the lockdown and only one neighbour

there are many ways to protect your 

family and estate. Well written Wills 

ensure your family are both financially 

and emotionally protected. It’s

the key issues you should address 

when making or updating a Will: 

No Will? 

It is a common misconception that 

you do not need to make a Will if 

you are married. Depending upon 

how your assets are held, those assets 

may not automatically pass to your 

surviving spouse and instead may pass 

in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. 

If you are unmarried and cohabiting, 

then the Intestacy Rules do not 

provide anything from your estate for 

your partner. A Will is necessary in 

affording your partner protection as 

well as safeguarding the inheritance 

for any future beneficiaries. 

Will review 

Where you have a Will, it is 

vitally important to review your 

Will in line with changes to your 

circumstances, the value of your 

estate and legislation changes. 

Minor beneficiaries 

2006 legislation introduced 

significant changes in respect 

of minor beneficiaries provided 

for within a Will. 

Different trusts now arise depending 

on the age contingency placed into 

your Will for minor beneficiaries. 

Depending upon the type of trust, the 

trust can produce unfavourable and 

ongoing inheritance tax, capital gains 

tax and income tax implications. 

Furthermore, an age contingency 

for a minor grandchild can result 

in an inheritance tax allowance of 

up to £350,000 being restricted or 

eliminated. This can result in up 

to £140,000 worth of avoidable 

inheritance tax becoming liable. 

Tax efficient Wills 

When considering inheritance tax 

mitigation, the preparation of tax 

efficient Wills should always be 

your first step. You can incorporate 

provisions within your Wills so 

to reduce your inheritance tax 

liability in many ways. Moreover, 

badly drawn Wills can create 

hidden and differing adverse tax 

implications for your beneficiaries. 

Having a correctly drawn 

Will is the cornerstone of 

inheritance tax planning. 

Care fee mitigation & 

second marriages 

You may want to consider protecting 

your assets for future generations. 

For example, if you are in a second 

marriage and want to safeguard 

your assets for your children whilst 

simultaneously providing access to 

funds for your spouse to maintain 

their standard of living. Alternatively, 

you may want to protect your 

assets for your children against the 

potential care fees of your spouse.

The blame game is finally ending! 

Family lawyer Vandana Chitroda of London law firm RIAA Barker Gillette highlights the pitfalls of the 

current divorce process and the benefits of ‘no blame’ divorce, which comes into effect in April 2022. 

Not all people who wish to end 

their marriage want to do it 

unpleasantly. On the contrary, 

many people want to get it over and 

done with as quickly as possible and with 

the least amount of upset. Unfortunately, 

until now, such couples have had no 

choice. Unless they have lived 

separately for a minimum of 

two years, or their spouse has 

vanished off the face of the 

earth, they currently have to 

blame their spouse for the 

breakdown of their marriage 

by demonstrating to 

the court that their 

spouse has behaved 

unreasonably or 

committed adultery. 

This ‘blame game’ can be frustrating 

for couples, especially where the 

split has been amicable. In addition, 

divorce petitions can be an upsetting 

read if a person chooses to air dirty 

laundry or say unkind things about 

their soon to be former spouse. It can 

therefore be a very unhappy process. 

For many years, family lawyers 

have been campaigning to end 

the ‘blame game’ as we see firsthand 

how damaging this can 

be, particularly where couples 

then have to co-parent 

their children and reach 

a financial settlement. 

The courts have finally 

heard our calls for 

an end to this process. From April 

2022, the ‘no fault’ divorce comes into 

effect, which means that people can 

no longer blame their spouse for the 

breakup of their marriage. Instead, they 

will merely have to cite “irretrievable 

breakdown of the marriage” without 

going into any further detail. No blame 

divorce will make the divorce process 

much more straightforward and allow 

couples to separate cleanly, reducing 

conflict and harm to children. It will 

also mean that people will no longer 

have to stay trapped in unhappy 

marriages for longer than necessary.

The journey of discovery with this house 

starts from the moment you identify it on 

the street of substantial homes in one of 

Tunbridge Wells’ pockets of particular loveliness. 

What immediately stands out is that unlike the vast 

majority of the Royal Spa’s splendid stuccoed Victorian 

houses, this one hasn’t been painted white, but stands grandly 

back from the road with a rendered finish more like stone. It’s 

very impressive, giving it a presence more mansion than villa. 

The imposing exterior also makes you immediately 

intrigued about what lies within and the first thing 

that greets me when owner Shelley Hamblett opens 

the door is to scale with the house – Bob, the English 

Mastiff, quite the biggest dog I’ve ever met, like a 

Shetland pony with paws. (Also one of the gentlest. 

I received a great honour after I’d been in the house 

for a while – he leant against me. Adorable.) 

Also meeting me at the door was Shelley’s 

working partner Liz Cruttenden, with whom she 

has set up an interiors design business, Hambleden 

Interiors, neatly combining their names. 

While Liz takes photographer David on a house tour, I 

go downstairs to the kitchen with Shelley, making myself 

comfortable on a high stool at the splendid island, 

 


“I immediately had the vision that this was where the kitchen needed 

to be, but to make the big space, we had to take out the wall that 

divided the area into two rooms – a wall which supported the whole 

four storeys. The building had to be pinned, so that was scary…” 

which is very cleverly lit just beneath the Calacatta 

quartz worktop, creating an atmospheric focus. 

As Shelley makes the coffees, I gaze across 

at the bank of Shaker-style cabinetry, which is 

the clever new solution to the wall cupboards/ 

no wall cupboards kitchen dilemma. 

Rather than have those dated wall cupboards, or more 

fashionable – but potentially messy – shelves (definitely 

dusty, I have them...), if you have an island large 

enough to provide essential worktop, hob and sink

This page: At the front of the house is the grand sitting room, with a lovely bay window complete with 

its original shutters still in place. Even with two large John Sankey sofas and a generous ottoman between 

them, decorated with an interesting collation of objects, this room doesn’t feel overstuffed 

space, floor-to-ceiling cupboards like these provide maximised 

storage and a very sleek, uncluttered finish to a kitchen. 

A sneak peek inside reveals they go back quite a long 

way, providing hidden worktop space, for mixers, coffee 

machines etc., which can all be tucked out of sight behind 

the elegant doors. No wonder people ask Shelley and Liz 

for tips for their own homes – which is what made them 

decide to start the company. “We’ve both done up many 

homes,” Shelley explains, “and friends often ask us for advice, 

so we decided to pool our resources and work together.” 

After suggesting to Liz that I would like to have 

a look at her house sometime (watch this space…), 

I join Shelley at the round OKA table in the dining 

area, on the other side of the kitchen island. 

It’s a great spot to take in the full extent of the large 

basement space which houses the kitchen and dining zones, 

with a sitting area at the other end and a large pantry off 

that – all exactly as Shelley pictured it when she first viewed 

the house three years ago. “In the 1970s the house had 

been divided into flats and the basement had actually been 

condemned,” she says. “The previous owner bought it in the 

early 90s and turned it back into a family house, making 

this floor a separate apartment for his mother to live in. 

“I immediately had the vision that this was where the 

kitchen needed to be, but to make the big space, we 

had to take out the wall that divided the area into two 

rooms – a wall which supported the whole four storeys.

But looking round at this lovely open-plan area, the 

‘living kitchen’ cooking/eating/sitting/mingling space

And it was exactly this family lifestyle that 

Shelley and her husband were looking to 

create. “We were both brought up in Tunbridge 

Wells, but we moved out to the country when 

the kids were little. When they became

“It was my Nan’s so it reminds me of her,” she says, opening the doors to reveal wonderful 

treasures, with curved shelves in the door, and a backlit mirror. “It was teak, but I 

painted it black and added Fornasetti wallpaper, to match the plates on the wall.”

shop which sells quirky things. “My husband is in construction and he worked on this station, so I had to buy it for him.” 

teenagers we decided to move back to the centre, because 

I didn’t want to be a taxi. We sold our house but couldn’t 

find anywhere so we rented for a while and then we saw 

this house – and made an offer after one viewing. 

“The previous owner had been here for 25 years, it was 

a lovely family home and it was emotional for him to 

leave it so he spent one last Christmas here – which was 

great because it gave us time to design the kitchen.” 

With that all clear in Shelley’s head, once the place 

was theirs, she didn’t hang around. “We started work 

immediately. I like to hit the ground running. We had 

employed the builders even before we moved in.” 

But while Shelley has big bold ideas she doesn’t waste any 

time putting into action, she does greatly appreciate and 

respect the glorious original features of the house – showing 

me the original solid wooden shutters still in place, tucked 

away to the side of the two windows in the kitchen. 

There are more lovely original wooden shutters in the boot 

room and laundry at the back of the house on this floor, 

a handy bit of joinery that perfectly bookends the joinery 

Shelley commissioned for the back wall of the room. 

This is another bank of elegant full-length cupboards 

echoing the ones in the kitchen, which are just on 

the other side of the wall. Painted a lighter shade 

of grey – Farrow & Ball’s Dovetail – they have the 

same brass handles, bringing it all together. 

The niche in the middle of the cupboard wall, with 

a bench seat and coat hooks above spelling out the 

family surname, is finished in tongue and groove, 

appropriate for the more utilitarian nature of the space. 

Still on this garden side of the house, with views out 

onto the lovely flat space, currently all laid to lawn, which 

Shelley plans to landscape, on the other side of the glazed 

garden door, is a loo – but it’s much more than that. 

Painted the lovely rich blue of F&B’s Inchyra Blue, 

panelled walls conceal secret entrances. Push them

paraphernalia, best kept out of sight – yet easy 

to access. “I love hidden doors,” says Shelley. 

Back up on the ground floor we come first to the 

TV room, which had a very different role when 

they bought the house. “It was the kitchen,” says 

Shelley. “When the library re-opens I really hope 

I can find the original plans of the house, to see 

where everything was originally. The other houses 

in the street I’ve been inside are all very different 

internally, so there’s nothing to compare it with.” 

She found the original Blackfriars tube station 

sign in here very close to home – in a shop virtually 

at the end of her street. “It was in the window of 

The Bloom Foundry, a flower shop which sells 

quirky things. My husband is in construction and he 

worked on this station, so I had to buy it for him.” 

Next door at the front of the house is the grand 

sitting room, with a lovely bay window looking 

out onto the street, also with its original shutters 

still in place. Even with two very large John 

Sankey sofas and a generous ottoman between 

them, decorated with an interesting collation 

of objects, this room doesn’t feel overstuffed.

No wonder people ask Shelley and Liz for tips 

for their own homes – which is what made 

them decide to start the company. “We’ve both 

done up many homes,” Shelley explains, “and 

friends often ask us for advice, so we decided 

to pool our resources and work together.” 

In fact, Shelley wants more furniture for it. 

“When we moved from our old house, all our furniture looked 

very scanty and we are still in the process of scaling it all up. I’m 

going to have more joinery in here on one side of the fireplace 

and I’m looking for a large dresser to put in the other niche.” 

There is already a stunning glass-fronted Victorian display 

cabinet on the back wall, which was a generous gift from the 

previous owner, to the new custodians of this lovely house.

Next door, with another lovely bay window, is what would 

have been the dining room, currently in use as Shelley and 

Liz’s office – and a wonderful advertisement for their skills.

Heading up again, there is another very special loo – 

this one the Bee Loo, for its striking Timorous Beasties 

wallpaper featuring super large apids, set off by a spectacular 

Thomas Crapper basin and classic pull-chain loo. 

I ask Shelley where she sourced the lovely radiator that is 

a feature in here and are all through the house. “They were 

here,” she says, smiling. “We just had them resprayed.” 

Up on the first floor we come to Shelley’s phase two, 

currently still in progress. Through a lovely original 

arch – one of several in the house, which add to its 

particularly welcoming atmosphere, almost like it’s 

giving you a hug as you pass through – there is a semicorridor, 

in use as a picture gallery, with a room at each 

end. “There was a door into a bathroom here,” explains 

Shelley. “We’ve moved it, so that bathroom is now an 

en suite for the spare room, when it’s done. It’s going 

to have pink onyx tiles from Mandarin Stone, with 

brass and glass fittings from West One Bathrooms.” 

The tone of the elegant and welcoming spare room, with 

a lovely upholstered bed from Feather and Black, is set 

by an amazing three-door mahogany wardrobe – another 

generous legacy from the previous owner. The dressing 

table is a treasure of Shelley’s own – an amazing walnut 

and leather Marie Galante vanity trunk from Starbay.

Appearing to be a simple trunk when closed up, like the 

cocktail cabinet downstairs it opens to reveal wonders within, 

with shelves for pots and potions and a mirror that comes 

up. “I’ve always wanted one,” says Shelley, a connoisseur 

of hidden treasures. “And look, it has a hidden door…” 

At the other end of the picture corridor is the door 

to the master bedroom and what will be Shelley’s next 

great work – what was a bedroom over the dining room 

below, is to be a dressing room, entered via double doors 

into the bedroom and leading into the bathroom at the 

back of it. Shelley already has a very clear picture of it all. 

“The bathroom is going to be jade green marble, with 

black slate floors with a copper vein and copper bath.” 

She hasn’t totally decided on the décor for the dressing 

room yet, but in terms of fittings there will be another wall of 

floor to ceiling cupboards, with a travelling ladder for access. 

But with that on the back wall how will one enter the 

bathroom? I wonder. By a secret door of course…

Situated right up high in the Weald, with far 

reaching and – especially in this morning’s spring 

sunshine – uplifting views, Goudhurst must be 

one of the loveliest villages in Kent. Sarah Hazebroek’s 

Victorian cottage is perched prettily near to the top 

of the hill, just down from the village. The view is so 

beguiling – through the windows of nearly every room 

in the house, that it’s hard not to just stand and stare. 

At first glance the property seems much larger than it 

actually is. “It’s deceptive,” Sarah explains, “because it’s long 

and thin.” A sensible decision on the house building front, as 

this happily means that nearly all the rooms face the view. I 

can imagine that this was a big factor in the decision to move 

here. “We spent eight years in a townhouse in Tunbridge 

Wells, near to the centre,” she says. “It was great at the time, 

you could just walk into town and the children were born 

there, but the parking! The parking was so difficult that I’d 

often be wandering the streets trying to remember where I’d 

left the car.” Not an easy feat with two small children in tow. 

Armed with a wish list – off street parking, a garden, a 

period property – and a view, they started their search. “I was 

passionate about having a view.” Sarah has a background as 

an estate agent and property finder, so it wasn’t long before 

they made a decision. “We fell in love with Goudhurst 

because of so many things – the situation,” (that view) 

“the links to London, the schools, and because it’s near to 

Tunbridge Wells, still being close to friends and family – 

and this house is within walking distance of the village.” 

The location was absolutely perfect, but the house just 

wasn’t big enough, and it also needed updating. “A lot of 

work needed to be done,” Sarah explains. “It was exciting, 

but a bit daunting. We completely gutted the whole place, 

but wanted to keep the period features, like the lovely 

fireplaces and sash windows. We did a big extension

and put on two further bedrooms and a bathroom.” 

Luckily the family were in rented accommodation, so the 

work could be done without disruption to family life. 

The existing small kitchen was pulled down and the 

kitchen relocated to the end of the house. “We wanted 

the doors to open out onto the terrace, so that you could 

walk straight out from the kitchen to the view.” This is 

now a kitchen to die for – and to dine in. It is large, light 

and bright, with a softly accented colour scheme of taupe 

and sky blue. I’m drawn to a gorgeously quirky picture of 

chickens directly above the stove. “It gets absolutely filthy,” 

laughs Sarah, “but I picked it up at an antiques fair for 

a bargain price, and who wants a boring splashback?” 

Bespoke kitchen units are painted in Little Greene’s Rolling 

Fog and teamed with subtle matching wallpaper, blinds and 

curtains in a design called Mini Hares from Peony and Sage. 

The dining end of the kitchen is unfitted, with a large 

cupboard that Sarah painted herself – one of many finds 

from Ardingly antiques fair. “I love it there,” she says, “you 

have to go early in the morning and be able to transport 

things though.” Fortunately husband Myles, who runs a 

homes and interiors PR firm, has a useful pick-up truck. 

The new extension blends seamlessly with the original 

house, both inside and out. They have been careful to 

make sure that the additional rooms are in keeping with 

the surrounding houses too. “The original house is tile 

hung. We decided to weatherboard the extension, to 

keep in with the traditional buildings of the area.”

“When the outside is lush and green too and the sun is 

shining, this room is really wonderful to be in,” says Sarah 

There is a nod to the period in 

the interior too. Many of the walls 

are papered, as they might have 

been in Victorian times, but with a 

contemporary country twist, and all 

matched with charming and colourful 

interior furnishings. Sarah has an 

expert eye for colour, something she 

has been able to exploit in her new 

venture, Huddle Collection. 

Many of us have Eureka moments, 

but few have the kind of ideas that 

come fully formed and ready to act 

on within the space of a dog walk. 

“I thought of the whole thing in one 

go,” Sarah explains. “I wanted it to 

be cushions, lampshades, bedspreads. 

But everything bespoke made. I spent 

the whole summer during lockdown 

finding fabrics, designs, suppliers.” 

Even more remarkably, most of the 

work was done online. “I did it all over 

Zoom. I haven’t had the chance to go 

out to India yet – and we launched 

the business remotely. My husband 

built the website over a weekend.” 

Soon they were up and running 

and orders – and products – started 

to flow in. “Once we’d started, we 

realised that we couldn’t fit all the 

products into the house.” Myles, 

who seems to thrive on a project or 

three, suggested that they rebuild an 

outhouse in the garden. “We still need 

to install some decking around the 

outside of it, but it functions perfectly 

as the Huddle Studio. It’s made things 

much easier and the stock is kept 

clean and separate from the house.”

November, not quite in time for 

Wealden Times Midwinter Fair, but 

Sarah is very much looking forward 

to running a stall at the Midsummer 

Fair at Hole Park in June, despite it 

falling just when she was planning 

to celebrate a milestone birthday. 

It sounds as if she’ll be able to 

mark it in style though, as the new 

venture has taken off really well. 

We head out of the kitchen through 

what was once the entrance to the 

house, but has been turned into 

an office. It’s smartly panelled “to 

hide the uneven walls” she laughs. 

The panelling, painted in Farrow 

& Ball’s London Stone, brings an 

instant period charm and a slight air 

of gentleman’s club to this space. 

The office leads directly to 

what was once the children’s 

playroom, but now doubles up as 

a comfortable and laid back TV 

room, a place where the family – and 

that includes two bouncy Springer 

spaniels – can relax and unwind. 

An appealingly large staircase, 

complete with book-filled half landing, 

is at the centre of what would have 

been the original house. It’s unusual to 

have such a generously sized staircase 

in what began as a modest cottage, 

but it works perfectly, bringing light 

and space to this part of the building 

– it’s almost as if this house knew 

that it was going to be made bigger. 

My first impression of the dual aspect 

sitting room is a ‘wow’ at the burst 

of colour and light. It is joyous, like 

a roomful of spring. The walls are a 

fresh and vibrantly grassy hue: Invisible 

Green by Edward Bulmer, anything but 

invisible. “When the outside is lush and 

green too and the sun is shining, this 

room is really wonderful to be in,” says 

Sarah. There is a saying I remember 

hearing once that ‘red and green should 

never be seen’ but in here there is pink 

and green – two colours that should 

very definitely always be seen. It’s an 

uplifting colour combination and 

co-ordinates well with the other accent 

colours used – here it is blue and yellow. 

Because all these colours are in the same 

tonal range, it all works beautifully. The 

mix in this room is united underfoot 

by the fabulous Kit Kemp carpet and 

framed by neutral and simple linen 

curtains from Willow and Bert.

has been incorporated into the range. “All the lampshades 

that we sell are named after Polly and her friends.” The 

wallpaper in this room is by Wallpaper Direct, but here 

Sarah offers a wise word of warning for anyone falling in 

love with a patterned wallpaper – be prepared for a lot 

of faffing. “This was a nightmare to match up along the 

seams,” she says. No matter how closely I peer though, I 

can’t see the joins, but I’m assured, “It took ages.”

fact it could double up as a glorious Claire Fletcher 

gallery if all the pictures were put into one room. 

The family bathroom was originally part of the 

landing, but is now on two levels, which provides a 

raised platform for the handsome claw bath. Panelled 

and wallpapered with a Cath Kidston design, the 

bathroom oozes period charm, despite the fact that most 

houses in Victorian times would have had tin baths in 

front of the fire, or even outside. Thankfully the tin 

baths on the terrace outside are strictly for plants. 

The Huddle Studio looks very inviting in the spring 

sunshine, and it’s just as alluring inside – a treasure 

trove of colourful cushions, lampshades and bedspreads, 

and some lovely lacquer trays and mirrors. “I knew 

from the very beginning I wanted lampshades,” says 

Sarah, “and then fell in love with these lacquer trays, 

but they are very labour intensive to make. Each tray 

has to have 20 layers of lacquer and each layer has to 

dry out completely before the next is applied. They’re 

made in Vietnam and this order was created during a 

patch of particularly humid weather, so they took

ages to arrive. Consequently they are expensive, but they 

set the right tone for the brand and are beautifully made.” 

The studio is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Pink 

Ground, which is almost exactly the shade of one of 

the pinks in Huddle’s logo. Sarah has cleverly spruced 

up the bland Ikea shelving units lining the studio 

with scalloping from Camilla Hampton Interiors, 

painting them in the same soft seashell pink. 

As we prepare to leave I can’t help thinking that Sarah 

has nailed it. From the scallops on the studio units, her 

choice of products, patterns and finishes, right through 

to the styling of the house interior. With the help of 

her husband Myles, she has not only managed to create 

a masterful reimagining of a Victorian period house 

through a contemporary lens, but also a covetable and 

colourful brand that could sit comfortably in any home.

Mridula Baljekar, best-selling author and winner of Best Indian 

Cookbook UK at the 2022 Gourmand International Awards, 

shares three of her spice-infused vegetarian recipes, inspired by 

her childhood in India and the country’s regional cuisines 

West India: Vegetable Curry with Gram Flour Dumplings 

Oondhiu 

Serves 4 Prep time: 15 mins Cooking time: Around 30 mins 

Gram flour is made from ground chickpeas and is a staple ingredient in both Gujarat and 

Rajasthan. High in protein and gluten free, it can be used for both sweet and savoury dishes. 

For the dumplings: 

• 190g gram flour 

• a pinch of 

bicarbonate of soda 

• ½ tsp ground aniseed 

• ½ tsp ground turmeric 

• 1 tsp ginger purée 

• 2 tsp dried fenugreek 

leaves (kasuri methi) 

• 1-2 fresh red chillis (seeded 

if preferred), finely chopped 

• 2 tsp chopped fresh 

coriander leaves 

• ½ tsp salt, or to taste 

• 4 tbsp vegetable oil 

For the vegetable curry: 

• 200g carrots, thickly sliced 

• 200g green beans, cut 

into 2.5cm lengths 


• 1 garlic clove, crushed 


• 1-2 fresh red chillis (seeded 

if preferred), finely chopped 


• 200g sweet potatoes, peeled 

and cut into 2.5cm chunks 

• 1 small or ½ large 

aubergine, cut into 

2.5cm chunks 

• 400g can of coconut milk 

• 200g boiled potatoes, 

cut into 2.5cm cubes 

• ½ tsp salt, or to taste 

• 2 tbsp tamarind juice 

or lemon juice 

• boiled rice or Indian 

bread, to serve 

For the dumplings: 

1. Sift the gram flour and bicarbonate 

of soda into a mixing bowl. Add the 

aniseed, turmeric, ginger, fenugreek, fresh 

chillis, fresh coriander and salt and stir to 

combine. Make a well in the middle. 

2. Add 75ml cold water to the ingredients 

in the bowl and stir. When the mixture 

comes together, add 2 tbsp of the oil and, 

using dampened hands, mix to a soft dough. 

Shape the dough into about 24 cherrysized 

balls and loosely cover with cling 

film to prevent them from drying out. 

3. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp of oil in a large, 

deep frying pan over a medium heat. When 

the oil has a faint shimmer of rising smoke 

on the surface, fry the dumplings in batches 

until browned, turning them frequently to 

ensure they cook evenly. Lift out of the pan 

and drain on kitchen paper. Keep the pan 

with oil in, for cooking the curry spices. 

For the vegetable curry: 

1. Blanch the carrots and green beans in a pan 

of lightly salted boiling water for 5 minutes, 

then drain immediately and plunge them 

into iced water. Drain and keep to one side. 

2. Heat the oil (or add to the oil in the pan 

you used for frying the dumplings) and fry 

the garlic and ginger over a low heat for 

1 minute, then add the fresh chillies and 

turmeric. Cook for about 30 seconds, then 

add the chunks of sweet potato and aubergine. 

3. Pour in 300ml lukewarm water and 

bring it to the boil. Cover the pan and 

cook over a medium heat for 5 minutes. 

4. Add the coconut milk, fried dumplings, 

boiled potatoes and blanched carrots 

and green beans. Stir in the salt. Bring 

to a slow simmer, cover the pan and 

cook gently for 6-8 minutes or until the

Slow-Cooked Fresh 

Vegetables with Five-spice 

Ghanta 

Serves 4 Prep time: 15 mins 

Cooking time: Around 30 mins 

This is a fresh-tasting, colourful vegan 

curry with a good mixture of root and 

softer vegetables, which give varied 

tastes and texture. It makes a substantial 

meal for four, accompanied by naan, 

chapatis, or boiled rice. Alternatively, 

you could serve it as an accompaniment 

to a lentil curry for six people. 

• 1 tbsp white poppy seeds 

• 2 tsp coriander seeds 

• 2 dried red chillis 

• 115g green beans, cut 

into 2.5cm lengths 


• 250g potatoes, cut into 2.5cm cubes 

• ¼ tsp black mustard seeds 

• ¼ tsp cumin seeds 

• ¼ tsp fennel seeds 

• ¼ tsp nigella seeds 

• 4-5 fenugreek seeds 


• 1 garlic clove, crushed, 

or 1 tsp garlic purée 


• 1 tsp salt, or to taste 

• 250g marrow or courgettes, 

cut into 2.5cm cubes 

• 150g green cabbage, finely shredded 

• 1 tbsp lemon juice 

• lemon wedges, to garnish 

• Indian bread or boiled rice, to serve 

1. Heat a small, heavy pan over a 

medium heat and dry-roast the poppy 

and coriander seeds and the dried 

chillies for 45-50 seconds, or until 

they release their aroma. Remove from 

the pan, leave to cool and grind in a 

coffee grinder or pestle and mortar. 

2. Blanch the green beans in 

boiling salted water for 30 seconds, 

then plunge them into cold water, 

to stop further cooking, 

3. Heat the oil in a heavy pan over a 

medium heat, add the potatoes and 

cook, stirring frequently until the 

potatoes are brown. Remove with a 

slotted spoon, leaving most of the oil 

behind, and drain on kitchen paper. 

4. Increase the heat and when the oil is 

smoking hot, add the mustard, cumin, 

fennel, nigella and fenugreek seeds to 

the pan. Allow them to crackle and 

pop for 15-20 seconds, then add the 

ginger and garlic. Reduce the heat to 

low and cook until lightly browned. 

5. Stir in the turmeric, fried potatoes 

and salt and add 250ml hot water. Bring 

to the boil, reduce the heat, cover and 

cook until the potatoes are just tender. 

6. Add the marrow (if using) and cook 

for 3-4 minutes. Add the beans, cabbage 

and courgettes (if using). Cook for 

2-3 minutes, until all the vegetables 

are tender. Stir in the lemon juice, 

and the poppy, coriander and chilli 

mixture. Serve with lemon wedges, 

and Indian bread or boiled rice.

Cumin & Chilli 

Phalon Ka Chaat 

Serves 4 

Fresh mixed fruits, lightly dusted with 

spices, can be enjoyed as a dessert or 

even a side dish. Any combination 

of fruits will work, depending on 

the season, but this recipe uses three 

tropical fruits that have fantastic 

health benefits and are also easily 

available in supermarkets all year 

round. Papaya, or pawpaw, has a sweet, 

buttery taste, while the pomegranate 

provides sour-sweet bursts of flavour. 

• 1 small or medium pineapple 

• 1 ripe papaya 

• 1 ripe pomegranate 

• 175g seedless green grapes 

• 175g seedless black grapes 

• ½ tsp ground ginger 

• ¼ tsp ground black pepper 

• ½ tsp ground cumin 

• a pinch of chilli powder 

• ½ tsp dried mint or 6-8 fresh 

mint leaves, finely chopped, 

plus fresh sprigs to garnish 

• ½ tsp sugar 

• ½ tsp salt 

1. Peel the pineapple, remove the eyes 

with a small sharp knife and cut the fruit 

into quarters. Remove the hard central 

core and cut the flesh into bite-size pieces. 

2. Peel the papaya. Cut it in half 

lengthways and remove the seeds. Scrape 

off the white pith under the seeds 

and cut the fruit into 2.5cm cubes. 

3. Using the handle of a large knife, 

tap the pomegranate all around. 

This loosens the seeds inside, making 

it easier to remove them. Cut the 

pomegranate in half and remove the 

seeds by peeling off the outer skin as 

you would an orange. Remove the white 

pith and skin next to the seeds and 

reserve the seeds. Halve the grapes. 

4. Mix all the prepared fruits together 

in a large bowl. Add the rest of the 

ingredients, except the salt, and mix 

them thoroughly. Chill for 1-2 hours. 

5. Stir in the salt and serve, garnished with 

sprigs of mint, for a refreshing fruit salad.

You could hardly fail to have 

noticed that for the past several 

years, ‘brow madness’ has 

appeared to grip the world. Blame 

Instagram, perhaps, but young women 

were spending up to 15-20 minutes a 

day creating ‘perfect’ brows – identikit 

eyebrows, which often made it appear 

that two large, black slugs had landed 

on the brow zone. But happily, as with 

hemlines, there are fashions in brows 

– and it is with a smile firmly planted 

on this beauty editor’s face that I can 

report: there are fresh trends in brows, 

and they are all a) less demanding, and 

b) more flatteringly natural. (Arches 

are going higher. Brows are going 

lighter. Thinner brows are back.) 

But if you ask any beauty expert, 

they’ll still tell you that brows are 

indeed the most important feature 

on your face. As New York ‘brow 

queen’ Eliza Petrescu once told me, 

“Well-groomed brows make your 

eyes look bigger and brighter, your 

nose narrower, your forehead higher 

– all without plastic surgery.” And 

when you have sparse brows – from 

over-plucking over the years, the 

after-effects of chemo, alopecia or 

because they’re naturally blonde or 

white – a groomed, defined brow can 

make all the difference. (In my case, 

I go from: ‘Where’s Jo?’ to ‘There’s 

Jo!’ That’s literally all it takes.) 

A wee while ago, I found myself in 

the corner at a beauty launch with a 

fellow editor friend who is practically 

the only other journalist ‘refusenik’ 

from non-surgical procedures like 

fillers, face-freezers, etc., that I know 

of. We’ve long had a pact that while 

our colleagues become ever more 

immobile, facially, no-one’s wafting a 

syringe in our direction, thanks. But 

the day after a recent Benefit brow 

bar appointment, she rushed over to 

me. “You’ve had something done!”, 

she accused. “I can see it!” “No way!” 

was my outraged response. But my 

friend maintained: “You have! I can 

see it, on your forehead.” Whereupon I 

re-wound the last few days and realised 

that the only procedure I’d undergone 

was precision waxing and tinting at 

the hands of a brow pro. My colleague 

promptly booked in for her own instant 

‘brow-lift’, and is equally hooked. 

DO get your brows shaped 

professionally by an expert 

This is the best way to ensure 

the perfect brow shape, creating 

a ‘blueprint’ for your brows that 

you can follow at home later. But 

do communicate the strength of 

brow you’re after – a natural shape, 

or bolder...? (I swear by the browshaping 

service at The Old Rectory

SERVICES. Don’t have brows shaped 

during your period, meanwhile, when 

you’re naturally more sensitive to pain. 

DO tint your brows. “This adds 

definition and can really open 

the eyes,” advises make-up artist 

Lisa Potter-Dixon. If you’ve paler/ 

sparser brows, a touch of tint can 

save massively on daily maintenance; 

during lockdown, when we couldn’t 

get to salons, I became devoted to 

Schwarzkopf Brow Tint, £6.99, and 

I use it every couple of weeks (several 

shades available). What I’d add is 

 


that it’s easy to add tint, but easy to 

overdo; err on the side of caution, 

remove the tint, check in a mirror and 

then decide whether more is needed. 

DON’T tint your brows lighter 

than they are. The brows should be 

the same colour as the darkest hair 

on your head. Or slightly darker, 

of course, if you’ve white hair. 

DON’T over-tweeze. Brow hair might 

not grow back, so be cautious. “Remove 

one hair at a time with the tweezers,” 

Lisa advises. A great tip I learned a few 

years ago is to keep switching between 

one and the other after you’ve removed 

just a couple of hairs, to get the most 

balanced effect. Use good, grippy 

tweezers – nothing beats Tweezerman 

Slant Tweezers, £23 – and always 

tweeze in natural daylight. Don’t ever 

use a magnifying mirror, meanwhile: 

it’s way too easy to overdo it. 

DON’T let the experience be more 

painful than it needs to be. Make-up 

pro Ariane Poole recommends a dab 

of baby’s teething ointment or an ice 

cube on the brow. Or try a hot flannel, 

placed on the brows for a couple of 

minutes, as it opens up the pores and 

makes the task virtually pain-free. 

Remember, too: you should always 

pluck in the direction that hair grows, 

rather than away from the roots. 

DO experiment with different brow 

shapes and shades with Benefit’s 

‘virtual Brow Try On’ app. Either 

upload a photo or use the camera on 

your computer or phone to take a 

picture, and the app does the rest. Find 

it in the ‘Wow Your Brows’ section 

of Benefit’s website. Unbelievable 

fun as well as being unbelievably 

instructive (and kind of magic, too). 

DO opt for a powder or fibre-based 

product, if your brows have lost their 

natural pigment or are naturally 

pale. This gives a soft finish and the 

most natural effect. The best powder 

palettes, in my opinion, include Chanel 

La Palette Sourcils, £40 – very much 

at the luxe end, and available in a 

choice of three glamorous two-shade 

duos, complete with mini-tweezers and 

brushes; NyX Professional Makeup 

Eyebrow Cake Powder, £6 (featuring 

a brow-setting wax in the compact), 

and (for natural beauties), the mirrored 

Inika Brow Define Palette, £33. 

Or try a ‘precision’ pencil. Twist-up 

brow pencils never go blunt. Firstly, 

then, there’s no risk of scratching your 

skin with the wood from a pencil in 

desperate need of sharpening, and 

secondly, they make it easy-peasy 

to draw small, fine strokes, which 

look much more natural. Check out 

Diorshow Brow Styler, £22 (four 

shades), MAC Eyebrows Styler, £16 

(seven shades), and No7 Beautiful 

Eyebrow Sculpting Pencil, £8.95 (four 

shades, including a grey), which has 

a more slanted tip. All have mascara 

wand-like ‘spoolie’ brushes for brushing 

through after applying the pencil; 

this gives the more natural effect. 

Do try an all-in-one brow mascara. 

Clear versions are available – and they’ll 

help ‘set’ any of the powder products 

above, to ensure they stay put all day. 

But I prefer the results with a tinted 

brow gel; some of these formulations 

also feature tiny, invisible-to-the-eye 

fibres, which can boost your natural 

brow endowment. I swear by Delilah 

Brow Shape Defining Brow Gel, £19, 

which has a wonderfully teeny brush, 

for precision application; you might 

also try the very affordable Rimmel 

Wonderful’Full Brow Gel, £7.99, or 

Benefit Gimme Brow+ Gel, £22.50. 

(If you think I’m giving Benefit a lot 

of name-checks, it’s simply because I 

consider them the No.1 name in brow 

shaping, grooming and colouring-in 

– and a slew of Beauty Bible Awards 

over the years shows that our Beauty 

Bible testers absolutely agree.) 

Do add a highlighter under the 

brow bone. ‘This lifts the brow, 

giving the illusion of an instant eye 

lift.’ A pale ivory or cream shadow 

is perfect; personally, I like one 

with a touch of shimmer to it.

with the perfect brows…?

Dr Tonucci on chronic pain and your options. 

What is chronic pain? 

Chronic pain is persistent pain which continues after 

healing or is the result of on-going damage. Chronic 

pain includes spinal pain, pain involving the central 

or peripheral nervous system (e.g. sciatica) and 

pain associated with other chronic diseases such as 

arthritis, endometriosis and headache. 

What are the common issues you see 

and treat in clinic? 

Lower back pain with or without leg pain (sciatica) 

or chronic neck pain with or without arm pain. I also 

see and treat head pain and neuropathic (nerve) 

pain including fibromyalgia, atypical facial pain, 

urogenital pain and post herpetic neuralgia. 

My specialist interests include neuropathic pain, 

spinal pain, pain-relieving injections and cancer pain. 

What treatment options do your patients 

have who are suffering with chronic pain?

Sarah Maxwell gets to grips with 

the indoor climbing wall 

Since climbing made its 

debut as an Olympic sport 

(Tokyo 2020) it’s gone from 

strength to strength in popularity 

with gym goers and has attracted 

a whole range of new participants 

of all ages and fitness levels. 

If climbing or bouldering has never 

been on your radar, let alone as a 

way to get you fit and healthy, you’re 

in for a surprise! The popularity of 

indoor climbing centres and climbing 

walls in regular gyms has rocketed 

over the last few years. I asked Stuart 

Howard, independent climbing 

coach at Chimera Climbing in 

Tunbridge Wells, to explain more... 

“A real growth area is the use of 

indoor climbing walls, particularly 

that of Bouldering Centres which 

allow you to climb without ropes. 

Their popularity is primarily due to 

their ease of access. A simple and 

short induction allows you to enjoy 

the sport safely, without the need 

to develop an understanding of the 

use of ropes and other equipment. 

Bouldering allows you to climb 

above safety matting – up to a 

restricted height – which means that 

you will soon find yourself immersed 

even on your first visit. Another reason 

why bouldering is so popular, is that 

it allows you to explore what you may 

be capable of, at your personal limits 

and in relative safety. There is a real 

satisfaction when you discover that 

you are able to achieve moves which 

were beyond your own expectations. 

“Climbing is a great way for 

beginners to exercise and it’s a great 

alternative for regular gym goers who 

need a change from their usual regime. 

It can also be used very effectively with 

your current fitness to give you the 

extra elements that are often missed 

in traditional fitness programs. 

“Climbing increases strength, 

flexibility, cardio vascular system, 

co-ordination, agility and much 

more. Everyone is able to climb side 

by side, regardless of their differing 

physical and technical ability, too. 

“In addition, the positive mental 

health aspects are huge, both from 

the social interaction, and the 

nature of mindful movement. 

“One common misconception is 

that you must have a strong upper 

body to climb. Correct technique 

body position, agility balance and 

co-ordination are key and these 

will develop as you progress. 

“If you’re averse to heights, don’t 

worry, you can practice some moves 

at the bottom until you’re ready to 

do more and even then there is no 

pressure, just support when needed 

as the climbing community itself is 

an extremely positive and supportive 

one: inclusivity and the welcoming 

of new climbers is at its core.”

and the menopause 

Recent research in the UK has shown that almost 1 million 

women have left a job because of menopause symptoms 

and for those who did stay in their workplace, an average 

of 32 weeks over the course of their career were taken as sick leave, 

to help ‘manage’ symptoms. These are astonishing figures, and 

they reveal how important it is that the previously taboo subject 

is now being discussed more openly. The menopause tends to 

occur between 45 and 55 years of age, with the average age being 

51, but the NHS say that around 1 in 100 women experience the 

menopause before they are 40. Common menopausal symptoms 

can be both physical and emotional and include (but certainly not 

limited to) hot flushes, sleep disturbance, night sweats, joint pain 

and weight gain as well as low mood and anxiety and difficulty 

concentrating. Whilst the term ‘menopause’ applies to a single day 

(marking one year since your last period), the time leading up to 

this where you may experience ‘menopausal’ symptoms can last 

for anything from 2-12 years and is known as the peri-menopause. 

This is where nutrition and lifestyle interventions can help reduce 

the physical and psychological symptoms and ease the transition.

Exercise is great for your brain as well as your 

body, so try to include a combination of strength 

training, cardiovascular exercise and restorative

strength training. It doesn’t have to mean lifting 

heavy weights in the gym… a tin of beans in your 

kitchen cupboard is a great starting point! During 

the peri-menopause it is important to listen to your 

body, some days, high impact exercise classes or 

running might feel more draining than energising, 

so how about incorporating some restorative 

movement such as yoga, stretching or Tai Chi? 

Exercise can improve mood, cognitive function 

and actually counteract age related deterioration 

such as dementia and Alzheimer’s as well as 

combating the anxiety, low mood and feelings 

of isolation that can accompany menopause.

Developing resilience to hormonal fluctuations, life stressors and 

health challenges is key during the peri-menopause. Quality sleep 

is essential as a lack of it increases inflammation, stress hormone 

production and can interfere with blood sugar regulation and 

immunity. Improve the quality for your sleep by exposing yourself 

to bright light during the day and get outside as much as possible. 

Ensure your room is dark at night, well ventilated and cool and 

avoid sugar and alcohol before bed. Support oestrogen excretion

Step away from... hormone disrupters 

Alcohol can play havoc with our hormones, 

lowering progesterone and increasing the amount 

of oestrogen in circulation, which puts additional 

stress on your liver. Alcohol also increases body 

temperature and raises your resting heart rate which 

may result in more pronounced hot flushes, night 

sweats and heart palpitations. Consuming foods 

high in free sugars, such as cakes, biscuits, sweets 

and chocolate causes higher insulin levels and the 

effect of insulin can cause hormone imbalance, 

making it more difficult to regulate symptoms 

and maintain energy. Try to reduce sugar in all its 

forms, include protein at every meal (as it helps 

balance blood sugar levels) and make sure you opt 

for complex carbohydrates from brown rice, quinoa, 

legumes and pulses to ensure a well balanced meal.

No time to grow vegetables? Not 

much space? Feeling daunted? 

Well – you don’t have to be 

rich to grow some veg, you don’t have 

to be cool and know it all – Prince 

might have sung, had he been into 

gardening. It is completely possible to 

grow a few easy edibles without having 

to buy expensive kit, install raised beds, 

or toil about in the mud all day every 

day. I just need your extra time – and 

a tiny bit of soil somewhere sunny. 

What to grow 

You will know what you like, but 

if possible, grow the tastiest, most 

un-buyable food. High yields and 

uniform shape may have to come top 

of the list for commercial growers, but 

flavour is key when you are growing 

your own. Nothing beats the taste of 

a home grown tomato, a sun-ripened 

strawberry, or a just picked and podded 

pea. Some crops need to be eaten fresh 

– if your chewing gum doesn’t lose 

its flavour on the bed post overnight, 

your sweetcorn and peas will – as the 

natural sugars that make them taste 

so good start hardening into starch 

as soon as they are harvested. This is 

why, as a certain advert has shown 

us, peas are frozen out in the fields. 

There are some weird and wonderful 

edibles out there. Often there’s a 

reason that they aren’t widely available 

in that they are either hard to grow 

or hard to prepare. Occasionally the 

more unusual crops are delicious 

and easy to cultivate – blue potatoes, 

striped beetroot ‘Chioggia’, Romanesco 

cauliflower (actually a type of broccoli) 

and climbing courgette ‘Tromboncino’ 

fall into this category, but it could 

be that some of these weirdos have 

remained unique because they 

taste at best, and to be polite, a bit 

disappointing. Asparagus pea anyone? 

Take Two Veg 

I have had to slim down what I 

grow to a two crop rotation, plus 

some permanent fixtures – herbs and 

perennials. I have also tried to ensure 

that they crop for a reasonable length of 

time, don’t take up too much room and 

aren’t attacked by every passing pest. 

A tall order? Well, I do have to net the 

kale and purple sprouting broccoli and 

occasionally water the French beans, 

but by sowing the winter veg at the end 

of summer and two crops of spinach 

and/or rocket in spring and autumn 

(they bolt in summer), I can more or 

less make sure that there are a couple of 

things to harvest all year round – see the 

table at the end of this piece for details. 

The two veg rule also a good way 

of growing edibles if you are limited 

in terms of space too, as one crop 

can follow another in the same bed 

(providing it likes the conditions). 

Reliable perennials 

These reliable plants will bring a 

crop every year without much TLC.

Crops under netting 

asparagus bed. If you like asparagus, but have been put off 

by the thought of having to wait three years before you get 

a harvest, then maybe this is the year to think again. You 

can buy one year old crowns, which immediately knocks a 

year off, (in the second year, you can probably pick one or 

two spears from each plant without too much harm) and 

also (or is it just me?) time seems to pass very quickly. You’ll 

be gathering handfuls year in year out after that, and only 

having to do a bit of weeding and an annual mulch in return. 

No dig 

No Dig means just that – hooray! Digging disrupts the 

delicate ecosystem, releasing carbon into the atmosphere, 

and turning over the soil brings weed seeds to the surface. 

If you add organic matter in the form of a mulch in the 

autumn, by the spring it will have been worked into the 

earth for you by the worms and the micro-organisms, 

ready for you to plant into. If the ground is particularly 

weed infested, you can place a layer of cardboard down 

first, then the mulch. The cardboard will suppress the 

weeds, but be soggy enough and easy to cut through, so 

that you can plant through it and not let the weeds in. 

Stress-free growing 

Annoyingly, edible crops can be fussy about soil and 

situation. Most vegetable plants are greedy – in a live 

fast, die young sort of way. They come bursting out of 

their seed cases, eager to grow, full of sap and delicious 

goodness, but, well, then they start looking around and 

being sniffy. To get them to the point of harvest most of 

these babies need an enriched soil, sunshine, water and 

a devoted carer to ensure that the weeds and pests don’t 

bully – or eat them for breakfast. Added to this is the fact 

that although the majority will like a lovely, fertile loam, 

some – cabbages, cauliflower and sprouts, for example, like 

rich, heavy clay, while carrots, parsnips (and onions) prefer 

light sandy soils so that they can grow straight down. Put 

a parsnip or carrot into rich stony soil and it will fork and 

fang and end up growing tentacles instead of a tap root.

person) is prone to disease and attack from pests. 

We all know that feeling, perhaps not to the point 

of an aphid infestation, but it does pay to match 

the conditions to the needs of each type of plant. 

Crop rotation is another way to ensure that 

plants stay healthy, as those grown in the same 

place year after year may suffer from nutrient 

deficiency or a build up of pests and diseases. 

Fact: cultivated vegetables are more delicious than 

weeds and wildflowers. It won’t take long for the 

neighbourhood to spot – or more likely smell, the 

tasty new crops on the plot. You can try to deter 

pests by companion planting – mixing strongsmelling 

or naturally repellant plants – like French 

marigolds among tomatoes to put off white fly, or 

onions with carrots to confuse the carrot flies. Grow 

nectar rich flowers to bring in predator creatures 

such as ladybirds, lacewings and garden birds that 

will feast on aphids and caterpillars. If all else fails, 

at least you’ll get some cut flowers to harvest… 

I have spent days picking caterpillars off cabbages 

and evenings out with a head torch searching for 

slugs – and worse, inadvertently serving the odd 

one up, boiled and buttered for supper. Avoid this 

tragic business by netting leafy crops (but make 

sure no birds get tangled in it) and get a fruit cage 

if you want to grow any kind of fruit at all. 

The breeders are doing their best to put the pests off, 

or at least give them a fighting chance. Look out for 

pest resistant varieties – there’s a carrot called ‘Fly Away’ 

and blight resistant potatoes like ‘Nicola’, or ‘Vitabella’.

There’s endless treasure to be found amongst the pages 

of this year’s seed catalogues, as Sue Whigham explains

It is so lovely to receive a seed catalogue in the post and 

especially when it is as tempting and full of promise as the 

one from Chiltern Seeds which wings its way here each year. I 

know that it is greener and more environmentally friendly to switch 

to online catalogues but thumbing through and choosing this 

season’s seeds is one of life’s little pleasures. Well, I’m sure that I’m 

not the only one. This edition is their 46th and as always not only 

have they listed some new cultivars to soften the hardest of hearts 

but have also got some interesting ‘heritage’ seeds in there too. 

So ten little white packets have arrived – so far. And I can 

see that the next job is to tackle the seed trays and rather 

tatty rootrainers that are tucked into the nether regions of 

the shed and to give them all a good wash and brush up. 

The sweet peas will be first to be sown. This year we’ve 

gone for Lathyrus ‘Nelly Viner’, introduced by a Mr Viner in 

1901. This ‘old fashioned’ sweet pea has smaller flowers than 

the modern cultivars but they promise to be a soft pink and 

‘very, very fragrant’. Delicious. The second choice for this 

season is L. ‘Restormel’ with ‘glowing coral red’ flowers. 

Another variety which sounds interesting and unusual is 

Lathyrus ‘Turquoise Lagoon’ whose flowers start off mauve and 

as they mature, become a beautiful turquoise. It’s a cross with 

Lathyrus belinensis which was discovered high up in the mountains 

of southern Turkey in the late Eighties. Lathyrus belinensis itself 

has orange and red petals, deeply veined with a darker red. Its 

‘wings’ are bright yellow. It is strongly scented but the fragrance is 

quite unlike what we expect from a sweet pea. I’m not sure how 

available seeds of L. belinensis are but there is always next season. 

As there seems to be a team of particularly hungry rodents 

on the loose at the moment as evidenced by the complete 

destruction of most of my potted tulip bulbs a few weeks ago, I 

think that the sweet pea seeds may have to be started off in the 

house. I clocked the advice, too late for the tulips, in one of the 

national newspapers a few weeks ago which was to buy cayenne 

pepper in large quantities, presumably online, and to cover the 

area where you have planted your bulbs with a good layer of 

said pepper in order to thwart invaders, whatever they might 

be. This could well work with sweet pea seeds unless you are

prepared to use your indoor windowsills to start them off. 

Rootrainers are ideal for sweet pea seeds as sweet peas like a 

long root run and limited root disturbance. So sow two seeds 

to each container and then pot them on into a 1 litre pot 

when the roots have filled the rootrainer. The next thing is to 

pinch out the tips of the seedlings when the plants have four 

pairs of leaves to help them branch out and avoid being tall 

and straggly. They can then be planted outside in a site with 

enriched soil when all signs of frost have long since gone. 

Considering that it must have been some time before 

the first lockdown, the memory of that first sighting of 

the next treasures I’m going to have to mention have 

stuck with the two of us for a very long time. Many 

of us will remember snapdragons in our grandparents’

garden. It was one of those beautiful summer evenings and 

once we’d spotted these sensational (and sensationally 

tall) snapdragons in fantastic colours, growing in 

one of the garden’s ‘planting pockets’ I’m afraid we 

abandoned the idea of the concert which was the 

reason for the visit in the first place. We were 

told that the seeds had come from the States 

and weren’t readily available then. I can 

only think that they are from the 

Potomac series which have been 

specifically developed for the cut 

flower market. Hence both their 

height and their straightest 

of straight stems. And now 

these giants are listed in a 

great variety of sumptuous 

colours. So whether you 

incorporate them into a 

large border or grow them 

specifically in a cutting 

garden I think they 

would be just fun to

James Wong’s collaboration with Sutton Seeds is exciting for the gardener 

who wants to grow something out of the ordinary Not only is the cucamelon 

drought and pest resistant, it grows into a very vigorous, decorative 

climber producing grape sized fruits which resemble tiny watermelons 

more subtle, A. ‘Potomac Lavender’ sounds heavenly too. It seems that if you cut 

them for indoor use, cutting just above a bloom, they will go on and on for a 

considerable time. I can see that the 10 packets are going to have to be added to! 

Nasturtium ‘Blue Pepe’ seems to me to tick all the boxes in that it is easy to 

grow and doesn’t need any sort of fuss made of it. Its bluish leaves have a peppery 

flavour and would look and taste good in a salad as would its red flowers. You 

can sow this in pots or in the vegetable garden at any time of the year really. 

Try too T. majus ‘Gleam Salmon’ with peppery edible foliage and flowers. 

Another companion plant with an edible flower are the tagetes or marigolds. 

Grow these with tomatoes to protect them against both green and white 

fly. Tagetes patula ‘Linnaeus Burning Embers’ is a favourite and lives up to 

its name with its velvety deep orange flowers edged in a paler gold. 

And finally, James Wong’s collaboration with Sutton Seeds is exciting for the 

gardener who wants to grow something out of the ordinary from seed – ‘Grow for 

Flavour’ is such an apt title for his seed range. We thought we might try Chinese 

Amaranth, both for flavour and look and cucamelons for fun. Not only is the 

cucamelon drought and pest resistant, it grows into a very vigorous, decorative 

climber producing grape sized fruits which resemble tiny watermelons. If 

you keep picking the fruit, they’ll keep coming. The flavour it seems 

is like a citrusy cucumber – great in a cocktail. I’ll let you know.

Gardening award success 

at Marlborough House 

School 

The Pre-prep Gardening Club at 

Marlborough House have achieved Level Four 

in the RHS School Gardening Awards. The Club’s 

green-fingered pupils mastered the use of professional 

gardening tools, demonstrated their ability to plan a 

garden and care for their plants, and learnt how to 

use their delicious garden produce; providing 

home-grown vegetables for the school kitchen. 

The RHS rewarded the Club with £100 

of seeds so they are looking forward 

to a busy planting season ahead.

ACS Egham student on mission to 

transform solutions to colour blindness 


Connor, a grade 11 student (aged 17) at ACS 

International School Egham, is leading an initiative to 

raise awareness of colour blindness and provide practical 

solutions, by running testing for young students in his school. It 

is estimated that one in 12 males and one in 200 females are colour 

blind (nearly three million in England), but the condition often goes 

undetected. Through his project, Connor – who is red and green colour 

vision deficient himself – has established a relationship with EnChroma, 

creators of glasses for colour blindness and providers of an online colour blindness 

test. Connor is currently working with the ACS partnerships team to roll out the 

test to Lower School students (aged 4-11) and those who are found to be positive for 

colour vision deficiency will be offered a follow-up assessment to confirm their results 

and type of colour blindness, of which there are three variations. Thanks to Connor’s 

project, EnChroma is providing a number of glasses to ACS Egham to loan out to 

students who need them during lesson time. EnChroma glasses are engineered 

with special optical filters that help people with colour vision deficiency to 

see an expanded range of colours more vibrantly, clearly and distinctly. 

Connor has been working on his colour blind awareness project as part of 

his International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) 

personal project. As well as raising awareness of colour blindness 

in education, Connor has been establishing partnerships 

with local arts establishments and parks, and EnChroma 

glasses will soon be available for people with colour 

vision deficiency to use at a local gallery and

’Tis the season to get 

lambing at Coopers Farm 

It’s March, so that means one 

thing – lambing at Coopers 

Farm. Three rams went in with the 

ewes back in October and five months 

later the lambs start arriving. And every 

year we look forward to it with ridiculous 

enthusiasm, completely forgetting the sleepless 

nights, tricky births and endless amounts of washing 

involved in what is inevitably quite a messy business! 

When the rams went to work they wore a harness 

known as a raddle that holds a wax crayon between 

their front legs. This means that when they serve a ewe 

they leave a large coloured mark on her rump, and by 

changing the colour of the crayon every 10 days – from 

red to blue to black – we can tell the 

order in which the ewes will lamb. 

We also had Malcolm the scan man 

come to the farm in January with 

a machine that has a Chitty Chitty 

Bang Bang aura about it. Malcolm sits 

in the driving seat with his scanner, 

Adrian pushes the ewes along a corridor 

where the passenger seat would be and 

Malcolm then announces whether they 

are carrying a single, twins or triplets. 

My job is to mark them with spray 

paint – a squirt on the shoulder for 

singles, one on the tail for twins and 

right across the rump for triplets. If 

at three o’ clock in the morning you 

have to help a ewe who is struggling 

to deliver her lambs, and have your 

hand in where the action is, it’s really 

useful to know whether you are dealing 

with four legs, eight or – heaven forbid – twelve. 

Once they’re all scanned we then hold our breath 

while Malcolm announces – not quite the Oscars but 

still like a big award ceremony – our score. If each ewe is 

scanned for one lamb it’s 100%, if they’re all expecting

twins it’s 200% and so on. It was big excitement this 

year with an all time high score of 186%! If we knew 

why, we’d be getting scores like that every year, but 

maybe it’s because the autumn was very kind and 

the grass hasn’t really stopped growing all winter. 

The other advantage of having them 

scanned is that we can stand by to sort 

out an adoption every time we get a 

set of triplets. As mum only has two 

teats, it’s unfair to leave her with three 

lambs as she will be constantly bothered 

and the weakest of the three won’t get 

enough milk to thrive. So we have to 

sort out an adoption, a very messy but 

very satisfying two-man procedure. 

Hopefully soon after the triplet birth a 

different ewe expecting a single will start 

to lamb. Once it becomes very close, 

the first person goes to the pen with the 

triplets, selects one and ties its front legs 

together and its back legs together so 

it can’t stand up… just like a newborn. 

Meanwhile the other person will deliver 

the single lamb into a bucket to collect 

the all important gloop that come as part 

of the package. The triplet then gets put into the bucket 

with the new lamb to get covered in said juices and 

the pair are then laid out in front of the ewe who gives 

them a good sniff and starts licking her brand new pair 

of twins. Thankfully no-one told her the scan results.
