"WE ARE HERE

TO SUPPORT THE

COMMUNITY NEED FOR A

NONDENOMINATIONAL,

FAITH-BASED LEARNING

COMMUNITY, THEN WE

SEND STUDENTS FROM

HERE WHO ARE GOOD

COMMUNITY MEMBERS."

Shar Wikoff and her husband have

called Sandpoint home for over 20

years. During that time, they have

raised a family, built community, and

developed a deep love for Sandpoint and

its people. Wikoff started at Sandpoint

Christian School as a long-term sub,

and it was during this time that she fell

in love with the students, families and

staff. She has since served on the school

board, taught and moved into the role of

principal in 2020, where she embraces

every opportunity to pour into students

and build foundations to strengthen the

future of our community.

Q. What sets Sandpoint apart and makes it

such an incredible community?

A. Over these 20 years, we have built a

community. Through church, school, sports

and other opportunities, we have built

relationships with good people that we

consider family. Sandpoint is a place that has

a spot for everyone and allows for a variety

of experiences, but it is still a small enough

community to know people and to be known.

These experiences can be summed up by a

story. I have been attending volleyball games

for quite some time and go as often as I can.

I get to know some of the players by sight

and name. We were out one afternoon in the

community and saw a past player. I was able

to tell her how much I enjoyed watching her

play and catch up on what she is doing now.

Sandpoint is a place where connections can

be made. Even in the simple act of going to

volleyball games.

Q. How is the community of Sandpoint

integral to the purpose and mission of

Sandpoint Christian School?

A. Sandpoint Christian School is a school

from our community and for our community.

It is very cyclical—we are here to support the

community need for a nondenominational,

faith-based learning community, then

we send students out from here who are

good community members. The Sandpoint

community supports the school. We have

been part of the community for over 25 years,

and we now have students whose parents were

students at our school.

Q. Is there one thing that stands out most

for you during your time at Sandpoint

Christian School?

A. The people stand out to me. We have a

dedicated staff that pour into their students

every day, guiding their learning and their

personal growth. Our families are supportive

and are engaged in our learning community.

Our students are a joy and the focus of what

we do. We have a group of supporters that

strengthen our learning community by

volunteering, donating, and praying for our

school. We have a fantastic relationship with

the Church of the Nazarene and its staff, who

accommodate and give to the school in so

many ways. There are many people who make

Sandpoint Christian School what it is, and

these are admirable people.

Q. As principal of Sandpoint Christian

School, what is your vision for the school

and what do you hope to achieve during

your time?

A. We are in a wonderful position of having a

lot of students and more interest in the school

than we have space. So, while keeping our

foundations of Christ-centered learning, a

school of families, and academic excellence,

we would like to grow our school. We are

deep in the planning stages of this now. We

are creatively using the space we have to serve

our current families and looking to build

in the near future to provide more space for

additional students.

Q. You serve as a key role model and

influence in your students’ lives. What is one

or two things you would like most to instill

in them?

A. Our vision for our learners is that they

will be academically challenged and prepared,

spiritually mentored and grounded, serviceoriented

and demonstrate compassionate

hearts. Even though our students are preschool

to eighth grade, one thing that keeps me

focused is to remember that we are developing

adults. Academics and character are both

important. We have high academic standards

and we want students to love and be loved.

They will be knowledgeable but also realize that

their actions speak. Compassion, kindness,

humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and

peace are important to learn too. With our

biblical foundations, our students leave our

school ready to be community members who

contribute in extraordinary ways.

Q. What one piece of advice would you give

to students headed out into the world?

A. Once you are a student at Sandpoint

Christian School, you are family, you are loved,

and you have a group of people here who are

rooting for you and want the best for you.

Q. Is there a specific person or moment that

has helped inspire you and that you look up

to in your own work in the community?

A. Knowing the stories of our students is an

inspiration to me. Some students have had

incredible loss and hardship in their lives. We

are able to come alongside parents to love and

support the student in learning and personal

growth. Every kid needs adults in their lives

who they know love them. Students who have

had a hard start in life need them even more.

This is why one of my favorite parts of the day

is greeting kids at the door in the morning. I

want to welcome them to a place where they

are known and loved.

Q. What’s been a key moment from the past

year, something that you look back on with

pride/joy/thankfulness?

A. Any time I see student growth, I am

thankful and thrilled to be a part of Sandpoint

Christian School. I love to celebrate that

growth with students. Recently I had a student

come in and read to me after struggling to

learn letters and sounds! That is just one

example of the growth that I get to see at

Sandpoint Christian School.

GET OUT AND ENJOY THE

SEASON HERE AT HOME!

BY ABIGAIL THORPE

SSpring is around the corner, and even though March

in Sandpoint may still feel a bit cold and gray, warmer

days and the first green blades of spring aren’t too far

away. While it may require a bit more planning and

bundling up, this is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy

all that our incredible place has to offer. While you’re out

there, you’ll get to see and enjoy the transition from winter to

spring firsthand, and nothing is more beautiful than watching

Mother Nature go through her strides.

After several months of winter, we’re all getting a touch of

cabin fever, and there are plenty of ways to combat it, even if

the snow’s getting slushier and the trails are muddier. Just plan

ahead, gear up and make yourself get out of the house—you

won’t regret it.

In fact, simply getting outside to exercise and spend time in

nature has a host of health benefits, including increased life

expectancy, improved sleep quality and reduced risk of cancer.

Particularly because of the pandemic, many of us are spending

even more time staring at screens than ever before (studies

estimate anywhere from seven to 10 and even 17 hours a day!).

What if, rather than sitting down in front of the TV, scrolling

through social media, or hitting up the XBox, you took an

hour or two to get outside and explore somewhere new?

You’ll probably find a ton of beautiful spots you never knew

existed—and get some healthy breathing in along the way.

When it comes to mental health, studies have shown that

time outdoors in nature not only reduces stress and improves

overall mood, it actually increases cognitive flexibility, working

memory and attentional control, meaning when you get back

from a walk, hike or even short break outdoors, you’ll be more

equipped to tackle work, school or other tasks.

Participating in outdoor activities is also a great way to foster

social connection while doing something healthy for yourself,

and Sandpoint has done a fantastic job of making sure there

are a multitude of opportunities to enjoy our beautiful

surroundings, no matter the time of year or snow load.

When it comes to the outdoors in March in Sandpoint, your

gear is key. If you don’t already have them, equip yourself with

a good pair of waterproof boots and a warm, waterproof jacket

or outer layer before you head out—then even the rainy days

won’t keep you indoors.

HIT THE TRAILS

Lucky for us, Sandpoint is filled with large trail networks

and mountain climbs just waiting to be explored. One of the

best spots to get out and take in nature while getting some

exercise is on public access properties made available to the

public through Kaniksu Land Trust. Kaniksu’s main mission

is land conservation, and they work hard to help private

landowners protect and preserve their outdoor spaces for

future generations to enjoy.

“Connecting people to nature is key, so a big part of

what we do involves listening and collaborating with

our community to understand where our mission could

lend a hand in filling needs such as physical and mental

health, education, food security, forest management,

and housing,” explains Marcy Timblin, Kaniksu’s

director of communications.

Pine Street Woods is a public access property at the

northwest end of Pine Street that has an awesome

collection of trails for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and

hiking, so whether there’s still a solid snow pack or

things are melting off, you can get out and enjoy the

woods and open meadows.

Seasonally, The Sandpoint Nordic Club has a selection

of adult and youth cross-country skis and snowshoes

available for rent up at Pine Street Woods, so even if

you don’t have your own you can still get out and try

something new. While the snow holds, fat biking is

another way to enjoy the amazing trail systems out at

Pine Street Woods, although once the snow starts to

melt, trail conditions won’t support biking.

While it’s very possible you’ll encounter some wildlife in

Pine Street Woods, Kaniksu’s Cabinet View Nature Area

out near Clark Fork, Idaho, offers an excellent space

to wander and enjoy wildlife viewing. The 75 acres of

wetlands and forest are home to moose, elk, songbirds

and squirrels, and also serve as an educational area for

kids to learn more about these incredible spaces and

how to care for them.

“Each person who walks the land embraces a

responsibility to steward its richness and diversity for

the benefit of present and future generations. That is our

vision—that all of us realize our stewardship role and

embrace it,” says Timblin.

In addition to these public access properties, Kaniksu

has worked on some private ownership land agreements

that include some public access component, so the

public is allowed to access private land for recreation,

fishing, hunting, and hiking or biking. The Syringa

Trail System is one of these spots and offers a large

network of hiking trails right next to Pine Street

Woods that offer a great wooded escape right close

to town. You can find a listing of all of these types

of properties at Kaniksu.org, along with a schedule

of upcoming events and educational programs.

Kaniksu hosts a number of both in-school and out-ofschool

nature education programs and camps for youth,

and its Kaniksu Folk School offers a variety of traditional

skills and music classes for adults, which is another great

way to connect with others, gain a deeper appreciation

of nature and traditions, and learn some long-lost skills.

can vary daily in March as the snow starts to melt, and some trails may be

“The very best way to support KLT's mission is to learn about conservation.

SPRING ON THE SLOPES

Another great option for getting out and enjoying Sandpoint in March and

early spring is spring skiing up on Schweitzer. The snow tends to be softer,

and if you hit one of those beautiful bluebird days, the view will take your

breath away—not to mention temps are much warmer this time of year.

Even if you don’t have a season pass, you can head up for the day, or even ski

for a half day on Sundays with Schweitzer’s Sunday Solution lift ticket (check

online to make sure it’s available on your date).

So, no matter where your springtime adventures take you, bundle up, check

up on trail and mountain info, and get outside to enjoy all that Sandpoint has

to offer this spring season. You won’t regret it.

PATIENCE

and

PLANNING

Advice for buyers and sellers today and beyond

By Joshua Nishimoto

While Sandpoint continues to be a beautiful and desirable place

to live, we must remember that for the housing market, the

only constant is change. To help us navigate the constant ebb

and flow of the North Idaho housing market, this month we

discuss current and future trends for buyers and sellers in the Sandpoint (and

surrounding) area with real estate agent Brent Stevens.

“The current housing market in Sandpoint remains to be hot,” Stevens said.

“However, lack of inventory and continued price increases have made it

difficult for a lot of buyers to participate.”

With an available buyer pool, we may see more and more people waiting

patiently for the market to turn, or more and more buyers looking to take out

loans to afford housing in the area. While the climate of the current real estate

market continues to belong to the seller, according to Stevens, we are seeing

some minute changes on that end as well.

“We are actually starting to see a lot of sellers on the fence about selling

because of how hot the market is,” Stevens said. “Coming up with a transition

plan is difficult once they go from seller to buyer.”

Whether buying or selling your home, Stevens suggests that it is very

important to choose a good and experienced real estate agent who is effective

in communicating, knows the market in your area, has a good approach to

marketing your property, and is available to show your property and present

offers at a moment’s notice. The opportunity to go from buyer to seller can be

exciting, but also daunting in the current market.

“Although price is important, it is not the only factor that affects one’s decision

to sell,” Stevens said. “Some other factors to consider are what your transition

For the month of March, we should see a continued

trend of the market slowly stabilize.

plan is and how it will impact negotiating offers, how much time you

need to initiate and execute your transition plan, and how contingencies

of your home sale might impact your transition plan.”

While buying and selling a home is still currently hot, some current

housing market trends regarding higher interest rates have begun to

spike, or “tick up,” as Stevens puts it. It’s a trend that Stevens said will

continue for the next few years with hopes that it doesn’t put too much

stress on the market.

“For the month of March, we should see a continued trend of the market

slowly stabilize,” Stevens said. “We should also see the increase of interest

rates creating apprehension amongst buyers.”

With the lack of affordable resources on top of supply, demand, and the

pandemic, another trend we are currently seeing is not only a lack of

inventory, but the amount of labor and available resources to be hard

to come by, showing that the current trend of fewer and fewer vacant

properties for sale now will continue.

“I think the pace of vacant land sales will continue to slow down as we

push through the pandemic,” Stevens said. “We saw a meteoric rise in

number of vacant land sales from 2019 to 2020 (a 58 percent increase),

and we saw this soften from 2020 to 2021 (a 12 percent decrease).”

On the other end, with inventory being historically low, now presents

great opportunity for folks to sell their homes. While this is not always

the case, as Stevens suggests, some annual drop-off in buyer interest for

the month of November, it behooves both buyer and seller to keep an eye

on the market and not make any rash decisions.

“Although I don’t have a crystal ball, it’s hard to imagine the trajectory

of pricing to continue its aggressive upward path, so I would guess that

it should start to level off and remain steady for a few years,” Stevens

said. “I would be surprised to see any significant fall off just based on

the number of folks still looking to move here. The wildcard could be

what happens with inflation, construction costs/material shortages and

the Federal Reserve’s handling of interest rates.”

MARKET REPORT

While the current housing market in

Sandpoint continues to remain hot, we are

seeing some trepidation from sellers about

putting their homes on the market for sale

for fear of the transition from seller to buyer.

Whether buying or selling your home,

connect with your local real estate agent who

knows the market in your area and can help

you be prepared for the transition and make

sure you are ready with a specific plan for you

to buy or sell your home.

No one knows what the future holds, but with

an available pool of buyers, lack of inventory

and the selling of vacant land on a downward

trending spiral, we may see the market

continue to slowly stabilize, with an increase

on loan interest rates, creating apprehension

amongst buyers.

2,400 FEET OF

SCHWEITZER

RACE FOR THE CURE

By Joshua Nishimoto

Calling all racers! Mark your calendars for 2,400 Feet of Schweitzer,

the longest Giant Slalom in the United States. This year, 24 Hours

for Hank once again presents this annual fundraising event to help

raise money to cure Cystinosis. Teams of skiers, boarders and telemarkers

will ride for prizes, bragging rights, an online auction and, most

importantly, fundraising for Hank’s future, providing financial support for

vital research for the cure to Cystinosis.

Cystinosis is a rare disease that affects a small population. In November

2007, Henry (Hank) Sturgis was diagnosed with Cystinosis, a rare genetic

disease that affects 500 people in the United States (mostly children),

and roughly 2,000 people worldwide. In 2008, Hank’s parents formed the

organization 24 Hours for Hank, and soon after created partnership with

the Cystinosis Research Foundation (CRF) to find a cure. To date, the

foundation has raised over $1.25 million for Cystinosis research.

Thanks to the research performed by the CRF, in 2013, the FDA developed

a slow-release formula of the powerful drug that helps children affected by

Cystinosis that changed Hank’s daily dosage from six times a day to only

twice a day.

Although 24 Hours for Hank has put on different events in the past,

including Dinner with Ben Stein and Cycling for Cystinosis in 2012,

currently you can sign up to race in the 2,400 Feet of Schweitzer Giant

Slalom event on March 26, 2022 (online registration closes at noon on

March 25), with all proceeds going to support 24 Hours for Hank and

Cystinosis research. You can also visit 24HoursforHank.org/how-to-help

for details on how you can become a 24 Hours for Hank Sustainer of Hope

with a single one-time donation or set up a monthly donation, or donate by

shopping on Amazon.com with Amazon Smile.

LOCAL

fun fact

Before it was

Sandpoint

Locals and visitors in Sandpoint

explore and enjoy the beauty of

the mountains, rivers and lakes

of this area that we call home, but

long before the first white settlers

arrived and the Great Northern

Railroad steamed into Sandpoint,

this area was populated by several

tribes of Native Americans: The

Kootenai, Kalispel and Coeur d’Alene.

The Kalispel Tribe called the area

along Lake Pend Oreille that is now

Sandpoint home, with ancestral

territories stretching from Pend

Oreille and Priest lakes, up the Pend

Oreille River into Canada. Called the

“Canoe People” or “Lake Paddlers”

by neighboring tribes, the seminomadic

Kalispel tribe hunted, fished

and gathered for their subsistence.

Fur trader David Thompson was

one of the first settlers to establish

a relationship and fur trading with

the native tribes in 1880. By 1892,

the Great Northern Railroad arrived

in Bonner County, and the area was

forever changed.

Join the ride. Make a difference.

JUNE 18, 2022

This one-day bicycle ride with 150-, 100-, 80-, 40- and 25-mile routes is presented on June 18,

2022, by the Sandpoint Rotary Club to benefit the Book Trust program of the Lake Pend Oreille

School District and other Rotary community youth service projects. The 150-, 100- and 80-mile

routes incorporate a newly paved route through Montana, alleviating traffic congestion on the

customary routes leading into Clark Fork, Idaho.
