Council
looks into
right-turn
arrow for
busy road
• By Fiona Ellis
INVESTIGATIONS have begun
amid renewed calls for a rightturning
arrow at a busy Hornby
intersection.
The idea of a green-light signal
for those at the Amyes Rd intersection
wanting to turn right into
Shands Rd is supported by 91 per
cent of residents who responded
to a Greater Hornby Residents
Association survey.
Just five per cent were against it.
City council acting transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said staff visited the site
on Thursday.
“[They] will be bringing the matter
back to the community board
once their investigations have been
completed,” Wright said.
Association chairman Marc
Duff said he was pleased the
council was looking into the situation.
“It’s something the community
has asked for a long time,” he said.
He was not surprised the survey,
in which about 150 people
took part, showed the right turn
arrow to be so popular.
The association spoke to the
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board on the need
for a turning arrow last June,
after a Facebook post seeking
community feedback on the issue
drew over 100 comments.
Young person allegedly
involved in school theft
• By Fiona Ellis
POLICE ARE investigating
the late-night theft of school
speakers in which a child appears
to have been involved.
Waimairi school’s CCTV
cameras captured the incident
that saw six fire alarm and school
bell speakers stolen at about
11:30pm last Tuesday.
School Principal Mike
Anderson said one of the people
caught on camera appeared to be
“quite young.”
Possible identities of those
involved had been passed on to
the police to follow up.
CCTV photos were shared to
the school’s Facebook page with
a message asking people to get
in touch if they thought they
could help identify anyone, a
method that seems to have been
successful.
Anderson said he believed
he had a good idea of who was
responsible, although identities
have not been confirmed.
He felt frustrated by the
incident, he said.
The school would need to
replace the stolen speakers,
including hiring technicians to
install them, and the cost could
be “in the thousands”.
“Schools have tight enough
budgets as it is, we really don’t
have the budget to be doing this.”
Anderson noticed the theft
early the next morning when the
bell failed to ring as usual.
However, disruption in the
school schedule was minimal.
They were now using air horns
in place of a bell, as the school
already had this leftover from
post-earthquake construction
work.
Other fire alarms at the school
had not been affected and so the
theft did not pose a fire safety
issue, Anderson said.
He believed it was likely the
speakers were stolen so young
people could attach them to
their bikes and play music from
them.
“That’s what they’ve been
doing. It’s fairly common
knowledge in schools across the
country.”
Although he had heard of
it happening in other schools,
it was the first time such an
incident had occurred at
Waimairi School, and he hoped
it would be the last.
Police were continuing to
make enquiries to locate the
offenders, a police spokesperson
told Nor’West News on Monday.
SUSPICIOUS: CCTV footage of people allegedly at Waimairi
School where six fire alarm and school bell speakers were
stolen last week. Police are investigating.
Christchurch North
Community Patrol chairman
Sam Hall said although there
had been a few incidents in the
Jellie Park area, young people
were not generally causing
trouble in the patrol area.
“We’re always looking for that
sort of thing,” Hall said.
“It’s on our taskings to look out
for, but we haven’t come across
anything.”
In Brief
Nominations now open for
community service awards
Nominations open tomorrow for
the city council’s Community
Service Awards. The awards are
a way of honouring volunteers
doing good work in education,
culture, church, recreation, sport
or community service fields, from
youth to older adults. Nominations
close on April 14. Recipients will
receive their awards at a ceremony
hosted by their community board
in June or July.
Extension to neighbourhood
funding requests
Groups that have applied for
Summer With Your Neighbours
funding for community events
will be allowed an extension until
June. A report in the agenda of
the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board’s most recent
meeting stated subsidies were
initially for events taking place
between October 29, 2021, and
March 31. However, due to the
red setting on the Covid-19
protection framework, requests
for reimbursements will be
accepted until June 1.
Disc golf
course to
open soon
• By Fiona Ellis
NOW FUNDING is teed up the
installation of a new disc golf
course in Hornby is set to go
ahead this month.
Christchurch Disc Golf Club
president Paul Deacon said he was
excited to be moving ahead with
the 18-hole course in Warren Park.
“We’re hoping to get it in,
middle of this month, so very
soon,” Deacon said.
A $30,000 grant from the Rata
Foundation enabled them to take
action.
Although the cost of installing
the court was also about $30,000,
this was partially funded by an
earlier New Zealand Community
Trust grant of $20,000.
Some of the Rata Foundation
funding would also go towards
installing three other courses
throughout the city later this year.
Selecting suitable areas for
the sport could be challenging,
as obstacles such as trees were
needed to keep things interesting
for players of the game.
Deacon was keen to encourage
people of all ages and abilities to
try the sport, which is similar to
traditional golf, but played with a
frisbee.
“It’s very well suited to modern
lifestyle because you don’t need to
book a tee time, you can just rock
up and play,” he said.
CONCERNS: Greater Hornby Residents Association members Ross Houliston and Marc
Duff at the intersection of Amyes and Shands Rds last June. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
Green arrow investigated
• From page 1
City council data from August
15, 2018 showed on that day
12654 cars went through the
intersection between 7am and
6pm.
Of these, 1216 made the right
turn from Amyes Rd onto
Shands Rd.
Between January 1, 2018 and
January 1, 2021 seven crashes
occurred at the intersection, one
resulting in a minor injury.
“It’s not the only intersection
that needs addressing, but if we
can get one done and keep working
on them, it’s a start,” Duff
said.
The survey results would be
presented to the community
board, he said.
The survey also showed a
walkway between Countdown
and the Hub was wanted by 73
per cent of people, to improve
accessibility.
However, the idea of a road
through Kyle Park to connect
Hei Hei Rd and Chalmers Rd
by the Hub proved less popular,
with 53 per cent against looking
into this possibility.
“It was close, but there was a
majority that didn’t want a feasibility
study.”
The final question in the
survey was whether hash lines
should be put in for access to
Tower St and Brynley St from
Main South Rd, and vice versa.
This idea found favour with 57
per cent of respondents.
League
jerseys
donated
to Tonga
• From page 1
The Halswell players would
like to see the jerseys used by a
counterpart in Tonga, Harding
said.
“We’ve got surplus old jerseys
that we no longer use. We sorted
them out and we’ve got enough
probably to donate five teams.”
Two of these sets were junior
jerseys, suitable for those aged six
to 16, while the other three sets
were senior jerseys for adults.
While they were over five years
old, the jerseys were in good condition
and had probably only been
used for one season before going
into storage, Harding said.
New seasons meant new club
sponsors and therefore new
jerseys for players to wear, but the
outdated kit was still wearable.
The old uniforms were in
storage at the club’s old Halswell
Domain clubrooms. However, the
rooms were being cleared out as
members prepared to move into
new $2 million clubrooms.
The much-awaited clubrooms
will replace the current
earthquake-damaged ones, with
a shift anticipated in the next two
months.
Springbok tour supporters sought for project
• By Chris Barclay
ANTI-apartheid protesters
and rugby fans who supported
the Springboks Tour in 1981
are being sought to recount
memories of that divisive winter
for school children through an
oral history initiative for the city.
And once the audio interviews
are catalogued, ideally they will
be advertised and accessed at
sites such as Lancaster Park, an
epicentre of protest action as the
venue of the series-opening All
Blacks test against South Africa
– almost 41
years ago.
“What we
hope we’ll be
able to do is have
a mini audio
documentary so
Kris Herbert
you’ll be able to
walk around the
park and hear the story from a
viewpoint of being in the stands,
a protester and a police officer
so we can paint a rich picture of
this event,” Our Stories Project
director Kris Herbert said.
The not-for-profit project is
seeking interviewees from across
the divide to be quizzed by year
7 and 8 students at Unlimited
Discovery (Ao Tawhiti).
Already police officers who
were on test duty that Saturday,
August 15, have agreed to go
down memory lane to Wilsons
Rd and Lismore St, where they
faced off with protesters pre and
post-match.
News media who covered the
protests – and the game (won by
the All Blacks 14-9) – are also
sought for their views, likewise
‘neutral’ Cantabrians who
watched the drama unfold while
sitting on the fence.
Christchurch-based former
national organiser of Halt
all Racist Tours John Minto
provided ample local contacts
for the protest movement, but
pro-tour supporters have been
harder to locate, prompting
a request by Herbert to make
contact.
“We’d love to hear from people
who were rugby supporters, that
was another viewpoint on it, that
sport and politics shouldn’t mix.
They’re proving a wee bit trickier
to find.”
Students aged 11 and 12-yearsold
have been schooled up
on interview techniques, and
should put those skills to the test
intermittently over the coming
months when their schedule
allows.
Herbert, who secured $25,000
of funding through the city
council’s Intangible Heritage
Grant Fund, envisaged the
collection comprising about 15
interviews.
Our Stories Project started
in 2016 and focused on
Lyttelton, where schoolchildren
interviewed long-standing
residents about growing up in
the port.
Herbert said the project was
headed in a new direction, by
focusing on one of the most
contentious issues to split the
city.
“Although there were some
heartfelt moments with the
Lyttelton stuff, a lot of it was
quite light like: ‘My favourite fish
and shop was …’”
Now the project could
potentially go from the frying
pan into the fire.
PITCH BATTLE: Police armed with
batons confront anti-apartheid
protesters who made it on the ground
at Lancaster Park, delaying the start of
the first test between New Zealand and
South Africa in 1981.
“We wanted to collect stories
from the central city and
we thought we’d attach it to
the 40th-anniversary of the
Springbok tour,” Herbert
said.
“We thought it had multiple
aspects to understand, it’s not
just black and white, there’s a lot
of grey, and it’s connected
to physical places around the
city.”
Cricket academy a chance to fulfil dream
CRICKETER Darcy Rose
Prasad, 15, has scored the
opportunity of a lifetime being
named one of the ANZ Next XI.
ANZ searched the country
to find eleven passionate young
cricketers who were ready to take
their skills to the next level.
The academy will show New
Zealand’s young female cricket
talent a pathway into elite level
and future World Cups.
Darcy Rose will get to meet
her heroes, while attending an
exclusive White Ferns junior
training academy later this year,
where she and her fellow squad
members will meet the players,
train with the team, attend
expert-led master classes, and
learn valuable skills to inspire
them to become the very best
cricketer they can be.
Darcy Rose was shocked to be
named in the squad saying: “My
dad actually applied for me. I
had absolutely no clue that any
of this was going on. I’m very
glad that he did it. I’m pumped
that I get to go to a camp with
the White Ferns.’’
Darcy Rose, who plays for
Sydenham Cricket Club’s
premier women’s team, was
presented with an training kit
that includes a uniform, bat,
helmet and pads to ensure that
she has everything she needs to
be White Ferns-ready.
Darcy Rose’s love for cricket
started with her playing games
with her family and she signed
up to play for Sydenham at five.
“My dad got me into it when I
was very young. I’ve always loved
it and played it all my life.”
At school, Darcy Rose joined
in with the boys’ games, which
spilled over into weekends.
“I remember it being quite
daunting because I was one of
the only girls, but it was quite
fun. They were pretty encouraging
and cool about me playing,”
she said.
In year 6 Darcy Rose joined
the all girls team at her club,
she found a lot of differences
between playing with the girls
rather than the boys.
“It’s a lot less competitive, but I
really enjoy the social aspect.
“I’ve got some great friends
in my team now. Nobody in my
cricket team is from my school
so it’s a cool way to meet new
people and make new friends,’’
she said.
Darcy Rose made the tough
decision to pursue cricket over
football this season after she
realised cricket had taken her
heart. She was spread too thin
with three club trainings a week
plus the extra hours she likes to
put in at home.
OPPORTUNITY:
Darcy Rose
Prasad is excited
to be part of a
cricket squad
that will train
and develop
with the White
Ferns.
“I work on wicket-keeping or
I get my brothers to bowl at me.
They’re both fast bowlers. We do
cricket first and then try to fit
homework in after.
“I want to be the best cricketer
I can. It’s my dream to play for
the White Ferns. I’d like to think
that I’m better than my brothers
but they’re quite a bit older
than me so I try to keep up with
them.”
The academy won’t be
Darcy Rose’s first run in with
the White Ferns. After climbing
the ranks at Sydenham to make
the premier women’s team, she
was inducted into a new level of
competition, facing the bowling
of White Ferns Lea Tahuhu
and Amy Satterthwaite fielding
behind her in the slips.
“I was about to bat, I had padded
up and turned around to see
Lea and Amy walking out. I was
like: ‘Oh no’.”
“I blocked the first one she
bowled at me. The next bowl,
I hit back at Lea’s head, she
reached for it but couldn’t get it. I
got a couple runs off her,’’ Darcy
Rose said.
However, she was dismissed
with the next ball.
“It was pretty cool to face a
White Fern,’’ she said.
ANZ New Zealand chief executive
Antonia Watson says it’s
important to support women in
pursuit of their goals.
“We’re proud to be able to offer
these passionate young sportswomen
this opportunity to meet
and train with their heroes. I’m
a firm believer that if you can see
it, you can be it.”
She said ANZ has been a
strong supporter of women in
sport for over 10 years from
grass roots to elite level athletes.
“That’s why we’re proud to
be putting our full support
behind the ICC Women’s Cricket
World Cup. It’s a fantastic
opportunity to showcase our
athletes to the world and provide
important opportunities to
grow the next generation of
cricketers.”
CONTENT MARKETING
Helping the kids buy their first home
THE AVERAGE asking price in
all regions across the country has
reached record heights, making it a
tough and competitive landscape for
first home buyers, who will now need
a deposit of $187,000 for the national
average asking price and a whopping
$250,00 for the Auckland average
asking price.
So, what can you do to
help your kids finance their future?
How it usually works
The most common case of parents
stepping in is where the kids have 10
per cent or 15 per cent of a deposit
saved and Mum and Dad are topping
that up to get them to 20 per cent.
There are several ways you can go
about leveraging the equity in your
own assets to provide the shortfall the
kids need.
A good number of young
savers have been adding more
to their KiwiSaver fund this
year, so it’s accrued very well and is a
great starting point for a deposit.
Know what you’re letting
yourself in for
If you are well resourced, you as
parents can provide a guarantee on
the whole loan, but this is a big step,
and unusual, as most of you will want
your children to be responsible for the
mortgage.
Be clear about the responsibility you
are prepared to shoulder, and bear in
mind the children still have to prove
they can service the loan, and with
increasingly stringent lending criteria,
without a good deposit, securing
finance could be tricky.
Remember, it can just be a temporary
solution to help them get a head
start with a foot on the property ladder,
which is becoming increasingly
difficult without parental help.
This can be a temporary
arrangement, with them repaying
the money when they sell the house,
ensuring they leave you with a decent
retirement nest
egg.
Put everything in writing
Document everything you agree on
to avoid getting in a tangle, including
what happens to the money if your
child and their partner break up.
If it is going to be a gift
of money with no strings
attached, viewed as an early inheritance,
then make this clear to the child
and the rest of the family.
Do you expect the money to be
repaid? If so, consider having the legal
document state it does not have to be
repaid until the property is sold – it
doesn’t bear interest, it comes behind
the mortgage.
