MESSAGE
Congratulations to Crescent College
Comprehensive and Presentation Brothers
College in reaching today’s final of the Pinergy
Munster Schools Senior Cup.
Both sides reached the final in dramatic style,
Crescent Comprehensive overcame Bandon
in the semi-final on a score of 17-15 while
Presentation came out winners against rivals
CBC in another thrilling semi on a score of 21-
19. A kick of a ball could have decided either
games and shows how close the margin was.
While this is no consolation to Bandon and
CBC, there will be other days, other games
and other finals to look forward to in the years
ahead.
To all the teams and players that participated
in this year’s competition, well done and I hope
the experience will stand to you into the future
both on and off the field.
I would like to thank Pinergy for their kind and
continued sponsorship of this competition, it is
much appreciated.
A thank you to the Munster Schools Committee,
who organise and oversee this competition and
to all who contributed in any way to getting
today’s final played.
Lastly a thank you to the Munster Association
of Referees for your ongoing officiating
throughout the season.

Both schools have a long and proud tradition
in this competition which is now in its 113th
year, Munster Schools Senior Cup medals are
not easy come by and are hard earned, for one
team today there will be celebrations and the
other will be disappointment but this is all a
part of competitive sport.
I would like to wish both teams the very best
of luck, whatever the outcome today, no doubt
it will have a lasting memory for you into the
years ahead.

IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN TODAY
The 1916 final, or more specifically the
celebrations that followed, spawned one
of the most bizarre incidents the Munster
Schools Senior Cup has ever seen. Jubilant
Christian Brothers College supporters
celebrating their 3-1 final victory over local
rivals Pres at the Mardyke were mistaken
by a local Daily Mail reporter as dissenting
rioters, venting their feelings by ‘waving
flags and blowing bugles, while others more
fearless…threw explosives in the shape of
Chinese crackers amongst the crowd.’
next day, eventually escalating right to the
House of Commons on the 7th of March the
following year through a complaint made by
the Lord Mayor of Cork. The following day
the paper issued a formal apology for causing
‘so much’ local indignation and illfeeling,
and that the paper made a donation
to the poor box.
The first, and probably last time a Munster
Schools match will ever be discussed at
Parliament!
A terse riposte came in the shape of a letter
which appeared in the Cork Examiner the

SCHOOLS SENIOR CUP TROPHY NAMED
THE GARRETT FITZGERALD CUP
The Pinergy Munster Schools Senior
Cup trophy has been named the Garrett
Fitzgerald Cup as a fitting tribute and
acknowledgement of the former CEO’s
contribution to the schools’ game in the
province.
Fitzgerald, who passed away in February
2020, was at the helm of Munster Rugby
for twenty years and prior to that held
numerous coaching roles across schools,
club, and representative sides.
As a player he won a Munster Schools
Senior Cup with CBC in 1971 and later
coached the school to a total of five
Munster Senior Cup titles guiding teams
during a highly successful period when
claiming four successive Senior Cups from
1997 to 2000.
In November, Garrett’s wife Áine O’Donnell
and daughter Megan attended an honorary
event at the school recognising the fourin-a-row
success and fittingly the Schools
Senior Cup from that period, and the now
christened Garrett Fitzgerald Cup, were
both on display.
Commenting on the cup recognition, Áine
O’Donnell said, “Having this historic cup
named after Garrett is a lovely tribute to
what he achieved and to remember what
the schools’ game, and the grassroots
game overall, meant to him.
“He was a huge believer in young people
and wanting them to reach their potential.
Winning this cup recognises excellence
and achieving one’s potential and having
Garrett’s name associated with it is a huge
honour.”
CBC remain the only school to hold this
honour having previously achieved the feat
in the 1970s.

After a short hiatus, the Pinergy Munster
Schools Senior Cup has come roaring
back this season with an enthralling
campaign.
There has been great commitment,
determination and no lack of skill on
show as several schools have battled
it out but today it comes down to two
sides in the battle for the coveted
Garrett Fitzgerald Cup.
Today’s finalists indeed helped get
the competition off to a great start
with their semi-final qualifier match
at Thomond Park back in January.
Even with a backdoor available for the
defeated team, neither side wanted to
contemplate defeat.
The teams were level at 10 points apiece
going in at half-time. Ben O’Connor
for PBC and Oscar Davey of Crescent
exchanged early penalties. It was PBC
hooker Danny Sheahan who got the
first try after a strong rolling maul from
his teammates. Crescent’s hooker Mark
Fitzgerald responded.
O’Connor struck early in a tight and
nervy second half to nudge Pres back
in front but at the end of the day it was
Crescent who emerged victorious. Great
pressure saw them force Pres’ into
conceding a penalty try and the Limerick
side showed great determination and
heart to hold out for a 17-13 victory.
As a result of the defeat, the Mardyke
school had to face St Munchin’s College
in the quarter-final. Full-back O’Connor
was in sublime form for the Cork side
as they raced into a 21-0 lead at halftime.
He scored the opener; helped
create the other tries for the sprightly
Sean Condon and kicked all three
conversions. Munchin’s did make a
fightback in the second-half with a

pair of tries but Pres’ maintained their
comfortable lead through well taken
efforts from Adam Twomey and Fionn
Rousell; who notched a try for the pack.
Come the semi-finals; it was the local
Cork City derby that kicked things off in
an enthralling encounter at Musgrave
Park. The game was end-to-end, and the
mercurial Rory O’Shaughnessy opened
the scoring with a try that O’Connor’s
trusty foot converted.
However, Pres soon looked to be
in trouble as their Northside rivals
dominated either side of half-time and
built up a 19-7 lead.
Time also seemed to be against them
as they still trailed by that score with 10
minutes left. The team pulled together.
O’Connor was again a key instigator and
a great wide pass saw Condon touch
down before a Shaughnessy break
helped set up O’Connor. The full-back
converted both to nudge his side 21-19
in front and they held out for the last
couple of minutes to reach today’s
decider.
Crescent’s originally scheduled match
with Bandon Grammar had to be
postponed but it was every bit as nailbiting
and thrilling as the other final
four game; despite the first-half being
scoreless at Takumi Park. The Limerick
side had the strong wind behind them
in those opening thirty-five minutes and
dominated territory but couldn’t break
down the determined defence of the
Bandon boys. Max Clein came closest
but just ran out of space as he was
tackled into touch.
The game opened up in the second-half
and it was Ruadhan Quinn who would
be the hero; with the powerful Number
Eight securing a hat-trick of tries to help
his side to a narrow 17-15 victory. Quinn
opened the scoring with a quick tap
penalty close-in that Davey converted
and powered again off the back of a
scrum after a Bandon penalty.
The West Cork school responded to
take a 15-12 lead with time-running out
before Quinn sealed the game to the
jubilation of the local Limerick support.
Today should be another closely fought
encounter and should make a fantastic
end to what has been a great return of
this prestigious competition.
