JOHN RADFORD
Welcome to Phil Wallace,
Stevenage’s chairman, to One
Call Stadium for this afternoon’s
match.
Despite the last two results not going
in our favour, our season remains
very much alive and our hopes of
success this term a real possibility.
It was always probable that our
magnificent run in the league would
come to a halt at some point and
now our endeavours turn towards
starting another similar sequence of
the results in the business end of the
season.
Our management and players should
take further encouragement ahead of
these final 12 games, knowing
that we - as supporters - will be with
them every step of the way in our
positive and raucous backing from
the stands.
It was great to see another bumper
crowd in our last home game against
Exeter. The attractive football which
we’re playing and the high number
of points we’re acquiring seemed
to have generated great excitement
around the Town and I’m hopeful
that our home attendances will
continue to increase between now
and the end of the season.
We have a great incentive this
afternoon as we target a club record
of 11 consecutive home victories in
the Football League.
Very best of luck to Nigel and the
players.
NIGEL
CLOUGH
Welcome to Stevenage manager hamstring, so we were without him
Steve Evans along with the also and Elliott Hewitt, who’s been
staff, players and supporters from excellent for us this season, needed
Hertfordshire for this afternoon’s a breather.
game.
We’re heartened to be back at
home today and we’ll be doing our
utmost to set a new club record of
11 consecutive home victories in the
Football League.
After enjoying some excellent results
on the road in recent weeks and
months, the two recent away games
– at Tranmere and Port Vale - have
caught up with us to some extent,
though we contributed to our own
downfall with the manner in which
the goals were conceded.
We must get back to not conceding
goals, which we did so superbly
during our 14 game unbeaten run in
the league.
In our most recent game, at Vale
Park, we were in the game for long
periods after going 1-0 up and a very
rare error from Nathan Bishop let
Vale back into the match.
At 1-1, we were in the ascendancy
and missed a great chance
through George Lapslie. A minute
or two before they scored the
second goal, Vale sliced the ball
onto their own crossbar; an inch or
two lower would have seen us retake
the advantage. Those fine margins
had been going in our favour, but for
the past two games.
In mid-week, we were without Lucas
Akins and Stephen Quinn who both
came off injured in our previous
match at Tranmere four days
previously. Matty Longstaff felt his
One of the plus points was to have
James Perch play 90 minutes and
the performance of Kieran Wallace
in central midfield was very good as
well.
We’ll be doing everything possible
to break the aforementioned club
record today as we aim to embark on
another productive run in these last
12 matches.
Enjoy the game.
NEWSDESK
STAGS WELCOME DIABETES UK TO ONE CALL STADIUM
Leading charity Diabetes UK and
Mansfield Town Football Club are
hoping to show diabetes a red card
with a matchday event at One Call
Stadium.
As the Stags host Stevenage today,
Diabetes UK employees and
volunteers will be there to offer
guidance, information and support
on all things relating to the
condition.
Roy Bustin, Diabetes UK Volunteer
co-ordinator in the Midlands, is
delighted to be working alongside
the club in giving advice regarding
the condition.
“We are delighted to be working with
Mansfield Town Football Club on this
health awareness event,” he said.
“Diabetes is a serious condition, but
there is a lot that people can do to
prevent or delay the onset of type 2
diabetes, or put their type 2 diabetes
into remission by making healthier
food choices, being more active and
losing weight, especially around the
middle, if you need to.
“We can also chat to people living
with all types of diabetes who want to
know how to manage the condition
better, what support is out there and
more about our work.
“The last couple of years have been
very hard for everyone. Demand for
our services is increasing all the time.
Working closely with Mansfield Town
and engaging with their supporters
about diabetes is a great way of
helping people to make changes
which benefit their health in both the
short and long term.”
Stags’ goalkeeper Nathan Bishop
expressed his support for the charity.
“We’re really pleased to be
supporting Diabetes UK and
look forward to welcoming their
representatives to One Call Stadium
today,” said Bishop.
“It’s important that we all understand
as much as possible about this
condition, and the visit of Diabetes
UK will enable them to inform our
supporters of the causes, symptoms,
complications and treatments
associated with the condition.”
There are an estimated 4.9 million
people living in the UK with diabetes
- a condition where there is too much
glucose in the blood because the
body cannot process it properly.
If not managed carefully, both type
1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to
devastating complications, including
sight loss, amputation, kidney failure
and stroke. There is currently no
known cure for any type of diabetes.
Diabetes UK supporters will also
be fundraising on the day, so any
support you can offer will go towards
vital work including research,
campaigning, education and
helpline.
STAGS
CHANGE
SOCKS FOR
DOWN’S
SYNDROME
AWARENESS
Mansfield Town Football Club have
designated today’s clash against
Stevenage to support World Down’s
Syndrome Day and will be wearing
teal instead of amber socks this
afternoon.
The club have selected today’s match
to show support ahead of Down’s
Syndrome Awareness Week which
begins on Monday.
Down’s Syndrome is a genetic
condition caused by having an extra
chromosome 21 in some or all the
body’s cells. Down’s Syndrome is
marked by growth, developmental,
and learning delays that vary from
mild to severe.
Stags are participating in the
#LotsOfSocks campaign to raise
awareness about Down’s Syndrome.
#LotsOfSocks help us to get people
talking on World Down Syndrome
Day (WDSD), celebrated each year on
21 March.
The first team will change its colour of
socks today as part of the campaign.
If you would like to get involved, all
you need to do is choose some socks
that are going to get noticed - they
might be mismatched socks or your
craziest and most colourful socks,
whatever takes your fancy!
The 21st day of the 3rd month
(March) signifies the uniqueness
of the triplication of the 21st
chromosome which causes Down’s
Syndrome.
Many of the members and supporters
of Down’s Syndrome Association
have gone above and beyond with
their fundraising efforts. DSA still
rely almost entirely on voluntary
donations, big and small, and they
are grateful for all contributions.
Currently, Down’s Syndrome
Association offer advice, information,
support and resources about
any aspect of living with Down’s
syndrome including prenatal
support, benefits, education,
service provision, rights, health and
well – being, speech, language and
communication, complex and adult
needs.
They also aim to continue driving
awareness about the condition by
campaigning and continuing to make
fundamental changes in our society.
Down’s Syndrome Association has a
clear message regarding inclusivity
and ensuring everyone is a part of the
community.
“We’re all missing out if everyone
isn’t included,” the organisation say.
“We all love to belong and feel
included. And after the last couple of
years, it means more than ever.”
The club is pleased to support
Down’s Syndrome Association and
supporters who wish to learn more
about the campaign should visit:
THE
ACADEMY
Mansfield Town’s under-18s
defender, Darien Wauchope, reflects
on the season so far from a personal
and team standpoint...
thought as a team we played
I very well at the weekend against
Huddersfield. We started slowly
in the first 20 minutes, but we got
back into the game and started
to play our normal football. After
that, we dominated the game,
capitalised on our chances and
scored five goals.
The goals we scored were very good
team goals. There were a lot of
passes involved and we were very
clinical against the opposition. We
took our chances very well and took
the lead. The goals we conceded
were quite poor goals, but we can
work on that in training.
I am expecting it to be a
tough game this weekend,
as Bradford are always a
good side. They are going
to have good possession
of the ball, but we have
just got to stay compact,
communicate and take our
chances like we did against
Huddersfield, and we will win
the game.
It was a great opportunity
for me starting in the
game against Leeds
United under-23s. It
was good for me and my
development to come
into that environment
with the pro’s.
It was a very big moment
to play for the under-23s.
It shows that the coaches
have trust and faith in me at
that high level. It gives me
a lot of confidence in going
forward to keep pushing in
training and in matches.
As a player, I feel as though I’ve
improved a lot over the season. I
feel that every aspect of my game
has improved, and I have just got to
keep improving in my second year
and keep pushing to start for the
under-23s.
As a team, I think that we can try and
push for a top-half finish. We’ve been
unlucky in some games this season.
The coaches are mostly made up of
ex-professional players with a vast
knowledge of the game, so they’ve
taught me a lot. Being a defender,
they’ve shown me a lot of things that
I can do to improve as a player.
I hope to get some clean sheets
under my belt between now and the
end of the season. We’ve conceded
some sloppy goals, but we can work
on it to earn more clean
sheets.
Ladies’ manager Andi Bell reflects
on last weekend’s 5-1 victory over
Rotherham and looks ahead to
tomorrow afternoon’s County Cup
semi final at home to Arnold Eagles…
think we did really well against
I Rotherham. Every game is a
must-win for us at the moment and
it adds a little bit of extra pressure,
but we performed really well. We
were a little bit sloppy for their
goal, but I’m really pleased with
the performance and we did what
we needed to do.
The atmosphere in the squad is really
good. The girls have been fantastic all
season in terms of wanting to learn
and wanting to develop. We know we
have to work hard, but every time we
win, it gives us an incentive to win
the next one. We are in a cup final, a
semi-final of the County Cup and we
are still in with a chance of the league
title, so it is really exciting times in
training and the group are raring to
go.
It is absolutely in our hands because
of who we have played and who we
haven’t played, and if we win our
games, we will win the league. It is as
simple as that.
It is a much harder task than it
sounds in theory. Two of the title
challengers we have not played at
all. We’ve probably got the toughest
run-in out of everyone, but if we win
all of our games, that is the league
title for us.
It is still do-able to win the league,
but with only one going up from this
league, it makes it really difficult. You
could essentially drop a few points
and you won’t go up, so it is a really
hard league to get out of. It is in our
hands, and I am not underestimating
the hard games still to come which
will put that added pressure on us.
The pressure will be on us this
weekend as we are playing
opposition from a lower
league in the County Cup,
although they are doing
really well in their
league and looking
for promotion into
our league.
It is another
opportunity to get
into a final, and I
say to the players
that there are not
many opportunities
to achieve this. We’ll
be going all out, looking
to put on a professional
performance and get into
another cup final.
FOOTBALL IN THE
COMMUNITY
PARTICIPATE IN WORLD
BOOK DAY
Mansfield Town Football in the
Community was actively involved
in this year’s World Book Day on 03
March, visiting several partnered
schools across Mansfield and
participating in activities with staff
and Sammy the Stag. Football in
the Community had the fantastic
opportunity to join Parkgate
Academy in the celebrations.
The children loved meeting Sammy
the Stag and took the chance to read
their favourite books to him.
After an engaging, interactive
assembly, hosted by Robin Hood,
WHO’S WHO
the pupils enjoyed reading with the
Football in the Community staff.
Phoebe Eyre, assistant principal and
key stage two (KS2) lead said: “They
[the children] will just find that so
exciting.
“[It was] really engaging for them. It
gives them a chance to practice their
communication skills with a variety
of people.”
During their visits in the week,
Football in the Community also
distributed 300 books to partnered
schools across Mansfield to help
support young readers as part of
the exciting partnership between
Premier League Primary Stars and
the National Literacy Trust.
Premier League Primary Stars uses
the appeal of the Premier League and
professional football clubs to inspire
children to learn, be active and
develop important life skills.
The programme was developed and
is managed by the Premier League
Charitable Fund, a funded charity
that aims to create positive and
lasting sporting, health and education
outcomes for children, young people
and the wider community.
been changed. Only 5 to 13-year-olds
The holiday club costs £16 per day
and will run from 8:30am to 4:00pm
each day. Each child should bring
with them a packed lunch and
a drinks bottle for the day, with
appropriate clothing to be worn for
outdoor play.
THE GOLDEN
‘HIS STORY’
ARCHIVE
PROJECTING A PARADE OF GLORIOUS DAYS FROM
THE WORLD’S OLDEST PROFESSIONAL GROUND.
From the sublime to the ridiculous
and everything in between, we look
back with a Stags’ hero of the past,
focusing on memorable behindthe-scenes
moments they will never
forget.
Continuing the season with ‘His-
Story’ is former defender Bobby
Hassell, who made 181 appearances
for the club and scored three goals,
playing for the successful 2001-02
team that won promotion to the
Football League Second Division
(3rd tier).
can think of quite a few stories
“I from my time at the club, but
I’m pretty sure most of them are
unprintable!
ridiculed for my dress sense. It was
also common for the players to staple
or super-glue each other’s trainers to
the changing room floor, and things
like that.
To give you an insight into the
working week during our promotion
winning season, it went something
like this. We’d play Saturday and go
out Saturday night, go out Sunday
night, go out Monday night, go out
Tuesday night, have Wednesday off,
When Stuart Watkiss came in after
Billy Dearden left, one of the first
things he did was to take the squad
away for a week to Portugal. Whilst
there, training sessions had to be
cancelled near enough every day
because all the lads were drunk. It
was funny because nobody could
ever stand up, as we’d often only just
got in from the night before and then
gone straight to training. I’m sure
they won’t mind me mentioning, but I
particularly recall Liam Lawrence and
Andy White falling over a lot!
When we came back from Portugal,
we played Southend (I think) and we
battered them – bearing in mind we’d
been on the ale all week too!
The camaraderie between us all was
really good and this was boosted by
the fact we got promoted.
We’d always be doing daft things, like
cutting each other’s clothes up. I was
a major target for this as I was always
go out Thursday night! This was our
general routine every week.
Neil MacKenzie is probably the
funniest player I’ve ever played with.
On nights out in town he’d often wear
a costume, and his favourite was his
horse head helmet which he’d often
wear. He got into trouble on a few
occasions for singing and dancing on
tables, and being too loud and leery,
but once the police took off the horse
head and realised who he was, he
always got away with it.
I really enjoyed my time at the
club and – as it’s 20 years since our
promotion season – the lads are
looking to get together to mark the
occasion. It would be extremely
fitting if Mansfield was to be
promoted this season too!”
